2. Improvement of Reactive Power Consumption Ability for Dual-Excited Synchronous Condenser

Abstract

The traditional synchronous condenser (TSC) has strong reactive power delivery ability, however its reactive power consumption ability is restricted by the minimum field current of zero. The dual-excited synchronous condenser (DESC) has the wider range of reactive power regulation due to the two field windings on the rotor, and thus it is helpful to suppress the system overvoltage. In this paper, it is proposed a voltage and speed tracking excitation control (VSTEC) strategy which can realize the d-axis negative excitation through the feedback of the terminal voltage and avoid out of step through the feedback of the rotor speed. The control parameters of the VSTEC are calculated by the fuzzy control method. With the sudden rise of the system voltage as an example, the effect of q-axis excitation on the stability of DESC under the d-axis negative excitation mode, and the reactive power consumption ability of the TSC and DESC are calculated and compared. Further, the variations of the transient characteristic for the DESC along with the field resistance and rotor slot wedge material are revealed. The results can provide technical support for suppressing the system transient overvoltage.

5. Influence of Different Rotor Damping Structures on Dynamic Characteristic of Dual-Excited Synchronous Generator with Excitation Control

Abstract

In order to study the effect of the rotor damping structure comprised of the slot wedges and core on the dynamic characteristic of the dual-excited synchronous generator (DESG) with the power tracking excitation control (PTEC), the field-circuit coupled time-stepping finite element model is established by combining the 2-D transient electromagnetic model with the stator and rotor circuit equations. With a 300-MW DESG as an example, the dynamic characteristic indices, such as the amplitude and duration of rotor speed oscillation, are compared in terms of the separate and combined effects of the rotor damping structure and the PTEC. The different rotor damping structures of the DESG result in the large difference of the dynamic characteristic. In order to improve the dynamic characteristic of the DESG with different damping structures, the parameters of the PTEC are optimized in real time by the fuzzy control method (FCM). The optimal parameters of the PTEC are found to match the DESG with different rotor damping structure. The result shows that the DESGs with different rotor damping structures all have better dynamic characteristic indices after the parameter optimization of the PTEC. The results can provide a theoretical basis for improving the dynamic characteristic of the DESG and enhancing the system damping.

Abstract

Due to the coaction of supply harmonics and the harmonics resulting from the motor structures, the mechanism and distribution characteristics of iron losses become more complicated in inverter-fed induction motors. Therefore, accurate prediction and fine analysis of iron loss are very important at the design stage of high-efficiency inverter-fed induction motors. In order to predict the iron losses accurately, this paper proposes a piecewise iron loss model whose parameters vary with the magnitude and frequency of flux density, and two additional flux density terms are introduced to the classical iron loss model considering the nonlinearity of magnetic material and harmonic fields. With this model, the iron losses are calculated for an inverter-fed 5.5 kW induction motor. The results reveal the distribution characteristics of hysteresis and eddy current losses in stator and rotor cores, and the characteristics of additional iron loss caused by harmonic fields. By the comparison of predicted and measured no-load iron loss under different supply voltages and switching frequencies, the proposed model and the analysis results are validated.
