In its most elementary form, compressed sensing studies the design of decoding algorithms to recover a sufficiently sparse vector or code from a lower dimensional linear measurement vector. Typically it is assumed that the decoder has access to the encoder matrix, which in the combinatorial case is sparse and binary. In this paper we consider the problem of designing a decoder to recover a set of sparse codes from their linear measurements alone, that is without access to encoder matrix. To this end we study the matrix factorisation task of recovering both the encoder and sparse coding matrices from the associated linear measurement matrix. The contribution of this paper is a computationally efficient decoding algorithm, Decoder-Expander Based Factorisation, with strong performance guarantees. Under mild assumptions on the sparse coding matrix and by deploying a novel random encoder matrix, we prove that Decoder-Expander Based Factorisation recovers both the encoder and sparse coding matrix at the optimal measurement rate with high probability and from a near optimal number of measurement vectors. In addition, our experiments demonstrate the efficacy and computational efficiency of our algorithm in practice. Beyond compressed sensing, our results may be of interest for researchers working in areas as diverse as linear sketching, coding theory, matrix compression and dictionary learning. Previous algorithms for decoding AG codes up to the designed distance all assumed existence of an extra rational place on the base algebraic curve. The place is used to solve the decoding problem by linear algebra over the base field of the curve. The rationality of the place is essential, and therefore AG codes supported by all rational places on the curve are excluded from the domain of applicability of the decoding algorithms. This paper presents a decoding algorithm for those AG codes using an extra place of higher degree. It is well-known that cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In recent years, antiprimitive BCH codes have attracted a lot of attention. The objective of this paper is to study BCH codes of this type over finite fields and analyse their parameters. Some lower bounds on the minimum distance of antiprimitive BCH codes are given. The BCH codes presented in this paper have good parameters in general, containing many optimal linear codes. This paper studies the problem of constructing codes correcting deletions in arrays. Under this model, it is assumed that an $n \times n$ array can experience deletions of rows and columns. These deletion errors are referred to as $({t_{\mathrm {r}}}, {t_{\mathrm {c}}})$ -criss-cross deletions if ${t_{\mathrm {r}}}$ rows and ${t_{\mathrm {c}}}$ columns are deleted, while a code correcting these deletion patterns is called a $({t_{\mathrm {r}}}, {t_{\mathrm {c}}})$ -criss-cross deletion correction code. The definitions for criss-cross insertions are similar. It is first shown that when $t_{r}=t_{c}$ the problems of correcting criss-cross deletions and criss-cross insertions are equivalent. The focus of this paper lies on the case of (1, 1)-criss-cross deletions. A non-asymptotic upper bound on the cardinality of (1, 1)-criss-cross deletion correction codes is shown which assures that the redundancy is at least $2n-3+2\log n$ bits. A code construction with an existential encoding and an explicit decoding algorithm is presented. The redundancy of the construction is at most $2n+4 \log n + 7 +2 \log e$. Deletion errors are notoriously difficult to correct. The capacity of the binary deletion channel is not yet fully known, and there is no completely satisfactory solution even to the specific problem of correcting only two deletion errors. In this paper, we show that polarization theory, along with the powerful methods of polar coding and successive-cancellation decoding, can be extended to channels with deletion errors. Our results further generalize to channels corrupted by insertion errors and/or combinations of insertions and deletions. It was recently proposed to correct deletion errors using polar codes designed for the BEC, precoded with a sufficiently powerful CRC code. In this approach, in order to correct ${d}$ deletions in a codeword of length ${n}$ , successive-cancellation decoding is run separately for each of the $\binom {n}{d}$ possible deletion patterns, while treating the deleted symbols as erasures. The resulting complexity of decoding is ${O}\bigl ({n}^{d+1}\log {n}\bigr)$. In contrast, we develop herein a natural generalization of successive-cancellation decoding to channels with deletion errors. Our algorithm is based on the recursive structure of polar codes, processing the channel output in ${m} = \log _{2} {n}$ decoding layers, just like the conventional successive-cancellation decoder. Every node in each decoding layer propagates its uncertainty about the deletion pattern to the nodes in the next layer and, eventually, the correct deletion pattern becomes visible at the decoder output, with high probability. This makes it possible to consider at most $\binom {d+2}{2}$ scenarios at each node, and the overall decoding complexity is only ${O}\bigl ({d}^{3} {n} \log {n}\bigr)$ , which scales polynomially rather than exponentially with the number of deletions. Based on the proposed algorithm, we also investigate the channel polarization phenomenon. We are able to prove weak polarization where the number of deletions ${d}$ is small, i.e. ${d}={o}({n})$. We also conjecture the strong polarization for when ${d}={O}(1)$ and provide some evidence to support this conjecture. The strong polarization, if proven, implies that our coding scheme achieves the capacity of any binary-input symmetric channel which furthermore introduces a constant number of deletions. In this paper we introduce Ouroboros, a new family of Key Exchange protocols based on coding theory. The protocols propose a middle ground between the cryptosystems based on $\mathsf {QC}$ - $\mathsf {MDPC}$ codes, which feature small parameter sizes, but have a security reduction to two problems: the syndrome decoding problem and the indistinguishability of the code, and the HQC protocol, which features bigger parameters but has a security reduction to the syndrome decoding problem only. Ouroboros features a reduction to the syndrome decoding problem with only a small overhead compared to the $\mathsf {QC}$ - $\mathsf {MDPC}$ based cryptosystems. The approach is based on an ideal structure and also works for the rank metric. This yields a simple, secure and efficient approach for key exchange, the Ouroboros family of protocols. For the Hamming metric we obtain the same type of parameters (and almost the same simple decoding) as for $\mathsf {MDPC}$ based cryptosystems, but with a security reduction to decoding random quasi-cyclic codes in the Random Oracle Model. This represents a reduction of up to 38% on the public key size compared to HQC, for the most secure parameters. For the rank metric, we obtain better parameters than for RQC, saving up to 31% on the public key for the most secure set of parameters, using non homogeneous errors in Ouroboros. In this paper, we focus on decoding nonbinary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in Galois fields of characteristic two via the proximal alternating direction method of multipliers (proximal-ADMM). By exploiting Flanagan/Constant-Weighting embedding techniques and the decomposition technique based on three-variables parity-check equations, two efficient proximal-ADMM decoders for nonbinary LDPC codes are proposed. We show that both of them are theoretically guaranteed convergent to some stationary point of the decoding model and either of their computational complexities in each proximal-ADMM iteration scales linearly with LDPC code’s length and the size of the considered Galois field. Moreover, the decoder based on the Constant-Weight embedding technique satisfies the favorable property of codeword symmetry. For the recently developed quasi-reversible BCH codes with long lengths and high error-correcting capability, this paper is aimed at proposing a new and faster decoding procedure. It consists of four steps: 1) compute the consecutive syndromes; 2) calculate the syndrome functions by the forward and backward recursions; 3) solve a linear subsystem together with one matrix multiplication in order to find an error-locator polynomial; 4) determine the errors from the obtained polynomial by using the root-finding algorithm. This procedure, especially in Steps 2 and 3, differs greatly from the conventional procedures, which determine an error-locator polynomial directly from solving a linear system with the aid of the consecutive syndromes. The key idea behind this decoding technique is that the computational complexity of such a small subsystem instead of an originally large linear system can be significantly reduced, although there are additional forward and backward syndrome calculations with low complexity increasing. Finally, the illustrative examples and numerical simulations can be helpful to demonstrate the accuracy and efficacy of the presented decoding technique at different error-correcting capabilities. Recent advances in noiseless non-adaptive group testing have led to a precise asymptotic characterization of the number of tests required for high-probability recovery in the sublinear regime $k = n^{\theta }$ (with $\theta \in (0,1)$), with $n$ individuals among which $k$ are infected. However, the required number of tests may increase substantially under real-world practical constraints, notably including bounds on the maximum number $\Delta $ of tests an individual can be placed in, or the maximum number $\Gamma $ of individuals in a given test. While previous works have given recovery guarantees for these settings, significant gaps remain between the achievability and converse bounds. In this paper, we substantially or completely close several of the most prominent gaps. In the case of $\Delta $ -divisible items, we show that the definite defectives (DD) algorithm coupled with a random regular design is asymptotically optimal in dense scaling regimes, and optimal to within a factor of e more generally; we establish this by strengthening both the best known achievability and converse bounds. In the case of $\Gamma $ -sized tests, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the regime $\Gamma = \Theta (1)$ , and again establish a precise threshold proving the asymptotic optimality of SCOMP (a slight refinement of DD) equipped with a tailored pooling scheme. Finally, for each of these two settings, we provide near-optimal adaptive algorithms based on sequential splitting, and provably demonstrate gaps between the performance of optimal adaptive and non-adaptive algorithms. We study the stability of low-density parity-check codes under blockwise or bitwise maximum a posteriori decoding, where transmission takes place over a binary-input memoryless output-symmetric channel. Our study stems from the consideration of constructing universal capacity-achieving codes under low-complexity decoding algorithms, where universality refers to the fact that we are considering a family of channels with equal capacity. Consider, e.g., the right-regular sequence by Shokrollahi and the heavy-tail Poisson sequence by Luby et al. Both sequences are provably capacity-achieving under belief propagation decoding when transmission takes place over the binary erasure channel. In this paper we show that many existing capacity-achieving sequences of low-density parity-check codes are not universal under belief propagation decoding. We reveal that the key to showing this non-universality result is determined by the stability of the underlying codes. More concretely, for an ordered and complete channel family and a sequence of low-density parity-check code ensembles, we determine a stability threshold associated with them, which gives rise to a sufficient condition under which the sequence is not universal under belief propagation decoding. Moreover, we show that the same stability threshold applies to blockwise or bitwise maximum a posteriori decoding as well. We demonstrate how the stability threshold can determine an upper bound on the corresponding blockwise or bitwise maximum a posteriori threshold, revealing the operational significance of the stability threshold. A large class of MDS linear codes is constructed. These codes are endowed with an efficient decoding algorithm. Both the definition of the codes and the design of their decoding algorithm only require from Linear Algebra methods, making them fully accessible for everyone. Thus, the first part of the paper develops a direct presentation of the codes by means of parity-check matrices, and the decoding algorithm rests upon matrix and linear maps manipulations. The somewhat more sophisticated mathematical context (non-commutative rings) needed for the proof of the correctness of the decoding algorithm is postponed to the second part. Interleaved Reed–Solomon codes admit efficient decoding algorithms which correct burst errors far beyond half the minimum distance in the random errors regime, e.g., by computing a common solution to the Key Equation for each Reed–Solomon code, as described by Schmidt et al. If this decoder does not succeed, it may either fail to return a codeword or miscorrect to an incorrect codeword, and good upper bounds on the fraction of error matrices for which these events occur are known. The decoding algorithm immediately applies to interleaved alternant codes as well, i.e., the subfield subcodes of interleaved Reed–Solomon codes, but the fraction of decodable error matrices differs, since the error is now restricted to a subfield. In this paper, we present new general lower and upper bounds on the fraction of error matrices decodable by Schmidt et al.’s decoding algorithm, thereby making it the only decoding algorithm for interleaved alternant codes for which such bounds are known. This paper proposes the Guruswami-Sudan (GS) list decoding algorithm for one-point elliptic codes, in which the interpolation is realized by the module basis reduction (BR). Elliptic codes are a kind of algebraic-geometric (AG) codes with a genus of one. Over the same finite field, they have a greater codeword length than Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, capable of correcting more errors. The GS decoding consists of interpolation and root-finding, while the former that determines the interpolation polynomial $\mathcal {Q}(\text {x}, \text {y}, \text {z})$ dominates the decoding complexity. By defining the Lagrange interpolation function over an elliptic function field, a basis of the interpolation module can be constructed. The desired Gröbner basis that contains $\mathcal {Q}(\text {x}, \text {y}, \text {z})$ can be determined by reducing the constructed basis. This is namely the BR interpolation and it requires less finite field arithmetic operations than the conventional Kötter’s interpolation, facilitating the GS decoding. Re-encoding transform (ReT) is further introduced to facilitate the BR interpolation. This work also shows that both the BR interpolation and its ReT variant will have a lower complexity as the code rate ${k}/{n}$ increases, where n and ${k}$ are the length and dimension of the code, respectively. The basic goal of threshold group testing is to identify up to $d$ defective items among a population of $n$ items, where $d$ is usually much smaller than $n$. The outcome of a test on a subset of items is positive if the subset has at least $u$ defective items, negative if it has up to $\ell $ defective items, where $0 \leq \ell < u$ , and arbitrary otherwise. This is called threshold group testing. The parameter $g = u - \ell - 1$ is called the gap. In this paper, we focus on the case $g > 0$ , i.e., threshold group testing with a gap. Note that the results presented here are also applicable to the case $g = 0$ ; however, the results are not as efficient as those in related work. Currently, a few reported studies have investigated test designs and decoding algorithms for identifying defective items. Most of the previous studies have not been feasible because there are numerous constraints on their problem settings or the decoding complexities of their proposed schemes are relatively large. Therefore, it is compulsory to reduce the number of tests as well as the decoding complexity, i.e., the time for identifying the defective items, for achieving practical schemes. The work presented here makes five contributions. The first is a more accurate theorem for a non-adaptive algorithm for threshold group testing proposed by Chen and Fu. The second is an improvement in the construction of disjunct matrices, which are the main tools for tackling (threshold) group testing and other tasks such as constructing cover-free families or learning hidden graphs. Specifically, we present a better exact upper bound on the number of tests for disjunct matrices compared with that in related work. The third and fourth contributions are a reduced exact upper bound on the number of tests and a reduced asymptotic bound on the decoding time for identifying defective items in a noisy setting on test outcomes. In this paper, we analyze the error floor of quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes decoded by the sum-product algorithm (SPA) with row layered message-passing scheduling. For this, we develop a linear state-space model of trapping sets (TSs) which incorporates the layered nature of scheduling. We demonstrate that the contribution of each TS to the error floor is not only a function of the topology of the TS, but also depends on the row layers in which different check nodes of the TS are located. This information, referred to as TS layer profile (TSLP), plays an important role in the harmfulness of a TS. As a result, the harmfulness of a TS in particular, and the error floor of the code in general, can significantly change by changing the order in which the information of different layers, corresponding to different row blocks of the parity-check matrix, is updated. We also study the problem of finding a layer ordering that minimizes the error floor, and obtain row layered decoders with error floor significantly lower than that of their flooding counterparts. As part of our analysis, we make connections between the parameters of the state-space model for a row layered schedule and those of the flooding schedule. In this paper, we consider the list decoding property of codes under insertion and deletion errors (insdel for short). Firstly, we analyse the list decodability of random insdel codes. Our result provides a more complete picture on the list decodability of insdel codes when both insertion and deletion errors happen. Secondly, we construct a family of insdel codes along with their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms through concatenation method which provides a Zyablov-type bound for insdel metric codes. An improved Singleton-type upper bound is presented for the list decoding radius of linear codes, in terms of the code parameters $[n,k,d]$ and the list size $L$. $L$ -MDS codes are then defined as codes that attain this bound (under a slightly stronger notion of list decodability), with 1-MDS codes corresponding to ordinary linear MDS codes. Several properties of such codes are presented; in particular, it is shown that the 2-MDS property is preserved under duality. We describe in detail the interplay between binary symplectic geometry and notions from quantum computation, with the ultimate goal of constructing highly structured codebooks. The Binary Chirps (BCs) are Complex Grassmannian Lines in $N = 2^{m}$ dimensions used in deterministic compressed sensing and random/unsourced multiple access in wireless networks. Their entries are fourth roots of unity and can be described in terms of second order Reed-Muller codes. The Binary Subspace Chirps (BSSCs) are a unique collection of BCs of ranks ranging from $r=0$ to $r = m$ , embedded in $N$ dimensions according to an on-off pattern determined by a rank $r$ binary subspace. This yields a codebook that is asymptotically 2.38 times larger than the codebook of BCs, has the same minimum chordal distance as the codebook of BCs, and the alphabet is minimally extended from $\{\pm 1,\pm i\}$ to $\{\pm 1,\pm i, 0\}$. Equivalently, we show that BSSCs are stabilizer states, and we characterize them as columns of a well-controlled collection of Clifford matrices. By construction, the BSSCs inherit all the properties of BCs, which in turn makes them good candidates for a variety of applications. For applications in wireless communication, we use the rich algebraic structure of BSSCs to construct a low complexity decoding algorithm that is reliable against Gaussian noise. We present an efficient list decoding algorithm in the style of Guruswami-Sudan for algebraic geometry codes. Our decoder can decode any such code using $\tilde{\mathcal {O}} (s\ell ^{\omega }\mu ^{\omega -1}(n+g))$ operations in the underlying finite field, where $n$ is the code length, $g$ is the genus of the function field used to construct the code, $s$ is the multiplicity parameter, $\ell $ is the designed list size and $\mu $ is the smallest positive element in the Weierstrass semigroup at some chosen place; the “soft-O” notation $\tilde{\mathcal {O}} (\cdot)$ is similar to the “big-O” notation $\mathcal {O}(\cdot)$ , but ignores logarithmic factors. For the interpolation step, which constitutes the computational bottleneck of our approach, we use known algorithms for univariate polynomial matrices, while the root-finding step is solved using existing algorithms for root-finding over univariate power series. An $(n,r,h,a,q)$ -Local Reconstruction Code (LRC) is a linear code over $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ of length $n$ , whose codeword symbols are partitioned into $n/r$ local groups each of size $r$. Each local group satisfies ‘ $a$ ’ local parity checks to recover from ‘ $a$ ’ erasures in that local group and there are further $h$ global parity checks to provide fault tolerance from more global erasure patterns. Such an LRC is Maximally Recoverable (MR), if it offers the best blend of locality and global erasure resilience—namely it can correct all erasure patterns whose recovery is information-theoretically feasible given the locality structure (these are precisely patterns with up to ‘ $a$ ’ erasures in each local group and an additional $h$ erasures anywhere in the codeword). Random constructions can easily show the existence of MR LRCs over very large fields, but a major algebraic challenge is to construct MR LRCs, or even show their existence, over smaller fields, as well as understand inherent lower bounds on their field size. We give an explicit construction of $(n,r,h,a,q)$ -MR LRCs with field size $q$ bounded by $\left ({O\left ({\max \{r,n/r\}}\right)}\right)^{\min \{h,r-a\}}$. This significantly improves upon known constructions in many practically relevant parameter ranges. Moreover, it matches the lower bound from Gopi et al. (2020) in an interesting range of parameters where $r=\Theta (\sqrt {n})$ , $r-a=\Theta (\sqrt {n})$ and $h$ is a fixed constant with $h \leqslant a+2$ , achieving the optimal field size of $\Theta _{h}(n^{h/2})$. Our construction is based on the theory of skew polynomials. We believe skew polynomials should have further applications in coding and complexity theory; as a small illustration we show how to capture algebraic results underlying list decoding folded Reed-Solomon and multiplicity codes in a unified way within this theory. The design of decoding algorithms is a significant technological component in the development of fault-tolerant quantum computers. Often design of quantum decoders is inspired by classical decoding algorithms, but there are no general principles for building quantum decoders from classical decoders. Given any pair of classical codes, we can build a quantum code using the hypergraph product, yielding a hypergraph product code. Here we show we can also lift the decoders for these classical codes. That is, given oracle access to a minimum weight decoder for the relevant classical codes, the corresponding $[[n,k,d]]$ quantum code can be efficiently decoded for any error of weight smaller than $(d-1)/2$. The quantum decoder requires only $O(k)$ oracle calls to the classical decoder and $O(n^{2})$ classical resources. The lift and the correctness proof of the decoder have a purely algebraic nature that draws on the discovery of some novel homological invariants of the hypergraph product codespace. While the decoder works perfectly for adversarial errors, that is errors of weight up to half the code distance, it is not suitable for more realistic stochastic noise models and therefore can not be used to establish an error correcting threshold. We consider construction of deletion and substitution correcting codes with low redundancy and efficient encoding/ decoding. First, by simplifying the method of Sima et al. (ISIT 2020), we construct a family of binary single-deletion $s$ -substitution correcting codes with redundancy $(s+1) (2s+1)\log _{2} n+o(\log _{2} n)$ and encoding complexity $O(n^{2})$ , where $n$ is the blocklength of the code and $s\geq 1$. The construction can be viewed as a generalization of Smagloy et al.’s construction (ISIT 2020), and for the special case of $s=1$ , our construction is a slight improvement in redundancy of the existing works. Further, we modify the syndrome compression technique by combining a precoding process and construct a family of systematic $t$ -deletion $s$ -substitution correcting codes with polynomial time encoding/decoding algorithms for both binary and nonbinary alphabets, where $t\geq 1$ and $s\geq 1$. Specifically, our binary $t$ -deletion $s$ -substitution correcting codes of length $n$ have redundancy $(4t+3s)\log _{2}n+o(\log _{2}n)$ , whereas, for $q$ being a prime power, the redundancy of $q$ -ary $t$ -deletion $s$ -substitution codes is asymptotically $\left({4t+4s-1-\lfloor \frac {2s-1}{q}\rfloor }\right)\vphantom {{\lfloor \frac {2s-1}{q}\rfloor }_{j}}\log _{q} n + o(\log _{q}n)$ as $n\to \infty $. We also construct a family of binary systematic $t$ -deletion correcting codes (i.e., $s=0$) with redundancy $(4t-1)\log _{2} n+o(\log _{2} n)$. We propose the first non-trivial generic decoding algorithm for codes in the sum-rank metric. The new method combines ideas of well-known generic decoders in the Hamming and rank metric. For the same code parameters and number of errors, the new generic decoder has a larger expected complexity than the known generic decoders for the Hamming metric and smaller than the known rank-metric decoders. Furthermore, we give a formal hardness reduction, providing evidence that generic sum-rank decoding is computationally hard. As a by-product of the above, we solve some fundamental coding problems in the sum-rank metric: we give an algorithm to compute the exact size of a sphere of a given sum-rank radius, and also give an upper bound as a closed formula; and we study erasure decoding with respect to two different notions of support. The traditional definition of Integrated Interleaved (II) codes generally assumes that the component nested codes are either Reed-Solomon (RS) or shortened Reed-Solomon codes. By taking general classes of codes, we present a recursive construction of Extended Integrated Interleaved (EII) codes into multiple layers, a problem that brought attention in literature for II codes. The multiple layer approach allows for a hierarchical scheme where each layer of the code provides for a different locality. In particular, we present the erasure-correcting capability of the new codes and we show that they are ideally suited as Locally Recoverable codes (LRC) due to their hierarchical locality and the small finite field required by the construction. Properties of the multiple layer EII codes, like their minimum distance and dimension, as well as their erasure decoding algorithms, parity-check matrices and performance analysis, are provided and illustrated with examples. List-decodability of Reed–Solomon codes has received a lot of attention, but the best-possible dependence between the parameters is still not well-understood. In this work, we focus on the case where the list-decoding radius is of the form $r=1-\varepsilon $ for $\varepsilon $ tending to zero. Our main result states that there exist Reed–Solomon codes with rate $\Omega (\varepsilon)$ which are $(1-\varepsilon, O(1/\varepsilon))$ -list-decodable, meaning that any Hamming ball of radius $1-\varepsilon $ contains at most $O(1/\varepsilon)$ codewords. This trade-off between rate and list-decoding radius is best-possible for any code with list size less than exponential in the block length. By achieving this trade-off between rate and list-decoding radius we improve a recent result of Guo, Li, Shangguan, Tamo, and Wootters, and resolve the main motivating question of their work. Moreover, while their result requires the field to be exponentially large in the block length, we only need the field size to be polynomially large (and in fact, almost-linear suffices). This work gives an explicit construction of a family of error correcting codes for the binary deletion channel and for the Poisson repeat channel. In the binary deletion channel with parameter $p$ (${\mathrm {BDC}}_{p}$) every bit is deleted independently with probability $p$. A lower bound of $(1-p)/9$ is known on the capacity of the ${\mathrm {BDC}}_{p}$ , yet no explicit construction is known to achieve this rate. We give an explicit family of codes of rate $(1-p)/16$ , for every $p$. This improves upon the work of Guruswami and Li (2018) that gave a construction of rate $(1-p)/120$. The codes in our family have polynomial time encoding and decoding algorithms. Another channel considered in this work is the Poisson repeat channel with parameter $\lambda $ (PRC $_{\lambda }$) in which every bit is replaced with a discrete Poisson number of copies of that bit, where the number of copies has mean $\lambda $. In this article, we propose an adaptation of the algorithmic reduction theory of lattices to binary codes. This includes the celebrated LLL algorithm (Lenstra, Lenstra, Lovasz, 1982), as well as adaptations of associated algorithms such as the Nearest Plane Algorithm of Babai (1986). Interestingly, the adaptation of LLL to binary codes can be interpreted as an algorithmic version of the bound of Griesmer (1960) on the minimal distance of a code. Using these algorithms, we demonstrate—both with a heuristic analysis and in practice—a small polynomial speed-up over the Information-Set Decoding algorithm of Lee and Brickell (1988) for random binary codes. This appears to be the first such speed-up that is not based on a time-memory trade-off. Minkowski proved that any $n$ -dimensional lattice of unit determinant has a nonzero vector of Euclidean norm at most $\sqrt {n}$ ; in fact, there are $2^{\Omega (n)}$ such lattice vectors. Lattices whose minimum distances come close to Minkowski’s bound provide excellent sphere packings and error-correcting codes in ${\mathbb {R}}^{n}$. The focus of this work is a certain family of efficiently constructible $n$ -dimensional lattices due to Barnes and Sloane, whose minimum distances are within an $O(\sqrt {\log n})$ factor of Minkowski’s bound. Our primary contribution is a polynomial-time algorithm that list decodes this family to distances approaching $1/\sqrt {2}$ of the minimum distance. The main technique is to decode Reed-Solomon codes under error measured in the Euclidean norm, using the Koetter-Vardy “soft decision” variant of the Guruswami-Sudan list-decoding algorithm. A new approach for designing bilayer and multi-layer LDPC codes is proposed and studied in the asymptotic regime. The ensembles are defined through individual uni-variate degree distributions, one for each layer. We present a construction that: 1) enables low-complexity decoding for high-SNR channel instances, 2) provably approaches capacity for low-SNR instances, 3) scales linearly (in terms of design complexity) in the number of layers. For the setup where decoding the second layer is significantly more costly than the first layer, we propose an optimal-cost decoding schedule and study the trade-off between code rate and decoding cost. The coding problem for wiretap channels (WTCs) with causal and/or non-causal channel state information (CSI) available at the encoder (Alice) and/or the decoder (Bob) is studied, particularly focusing on achievable secret-message secret-key (SM-SK) rate pairs under the semantic security criterion. One of our main results is summarized as on causal inner bounds for SM-SK rate pairs, which follows immediately by leveraging the unified seminal theorem for WTCs with non-causal CSI at Alice that has been recently established by Bunin et al.. The only thing to do here is just to re-interpret the latter non-causal scheme in a causal manner by restricting the range of auxiliary random variables appearing in non-causal encoding to a subclass of auxiliary random variables for the causal encoder. This technique is referred to as “plugging.” Then, we are able to dispense with the block-Markov encoding scheme used in the previous works by Chia and El Gamal, Fujita, and Han and Sasaki and then extend all the known results on achievable rates. The other main results include the exact SM-SK capacity region for WTCs with non-causal CSI at “both” Alice and Bob (), a “tighter” causal SM-SK outer bound for state-reproducing coding schemes with CSI at Alice (), and the exact SM-SK capacity region for degraded WTCs with causal/non-causal CSI at both Alice and Bob (). We speed up existing decoding algorithms for three code classes in different metrics: interleaved Gabidulin codes in the rank metric, lifted interleaved Gabidulin codes in the subspace metric, and linearized Reed–Solomon codes in the sum-rank metric. The speed-ups are achieved by new algorithms that reduce the cores of the underlying computational problems of the decoders to one common tool: computing left and right approximant bases of matrices over skew polynomial rings. To accomplish this, we describe a skew-analogue of the existing PM-Basis algorithm for matrices over ordinary polynomials. This captures the bulk of the work in multiplication of skew polynomials, and the complexity benefit comes from existing algorithms performing this faster than in classical quadratic complexity. The new algorithms for the various decoding-related computational problems are interesting in their own and have further applications, in particular parts of decoders of several other codes and foundational problems related to the remainder-evaluation of skew polynomials.
