Security of linear ramp secret sharing schemes can be characterized by the relative generalized Hamming weights of the involved codes. In this paper, we elaborate on the implication of these parameters and devise a method to estimate their value for general one-point algebraic geometric codes. As it is demonstrated, for Hermitian codes, our bound is often tight. Generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) codes are a class of LDPC codes in which the standard single parity check (SPC) constraints are replaced by constraints defined by a linear block code. These stronger constraints typically result in improved error floor performance, due to better minimum distance and trapping set properties, at a cost of some increased decoding complexity. In this paper, we study spatially coupled generalized low-density parity-check (SC-GLDPC) codes and present a comprehensive analysis of these codes, including: (1) an iterative decoding threshold analysis of SC-GLDPC code ensembles demonstrating capacity approaching thresholds via the threshold saturation effect; (2) an asymptotic analysis of the minimum distance and free distance properties of SC-GLDPC code ensembles, demonstrating that the ensembles are asymptotically good; and (3) an analysis of the finite-length scaling behavior of both GLDPC block codes and SC-GLDPC codes based on a peeling decoder (PD) operating on a binary erasure channel (BEC). Linear complementary pairs (LCPs) of codes play an important role in armoring implementations against side-channel attacks and fault injection attacks. One of the most common ways to construct LCP of codes is to use Euclidean linear complementary dual (LCD) codes. In this paper, we first introduce the concept of linear codes with $\sigma $ complementary dual ($\sigma $ -LCD), which includes known Euclidean LCD codes, Hermitian LCD codes, and Galois LCD codes. Like Euclidean LCD codes, $\sigma $ -LCD codes can also be used to construct LCP of codes. We show that for $q > 2$ , all $q$ -ary linear codes are $\sigma $ -LCD, and for every binary linear code $\mathcal C$ , the code $\{0\}\times \mathcal C$ is $\sigma $ -LCD. Furthermore, we study deeply $\sigma $ -LCD generalized quasi-cyclic (GQC) codes. In particular, we provide the characterizations of $\sigma $ -LCD GQC codes, self-orthogonal GQC codes, and self-dual GQC codes, respectively. Moreover, we provide the constructions of asymptotically good $\sigma $ -LCD GQC codes. Finally, we focus on $\sigma $ -LCD abelian codes and prove that all abelian codes in a semi-simple group algebra are $\sigma $ -LCD. The results derived in this paper extend those on the classical LCD codes and show that $\sigma $ -LCD codes allow the construction of LCP of codes more easily and with more flexibility. Linear codes with certain special properties have received renewed attention in recent years due to their practical applications. Among them, binary linear complementary dual (LCD) codes play an important role in implementations against side-channel attacks and fault injection attacks. Self-orthogonal codes can be used to construct quantum codes. In this paper, four classes of binary linear codes are constructed via a generic construction which has been intensively investigated in the past decade. Simple characterizations of these linear codes to be LCD or self-orthogonal are presented. Resultantly, infinite families of binary LCD codes and self-orthogonal codes are obtained. Infinite families of binary LCD codes from the duals of these four classes of linear codes are produced. Many LCD codes and self-orthogonal codes obtained in this paper are optimal or almost optimal in the sense that they meet certain bounds on general linear codes. A locally repairable code (LRC) is a linear code such that every code symbol can be recovered by accessing a small number of other code symbols. In this paper, we study bounds and constructions of LRCs from the viewpoint of parity-check matrices. Firstly, a simple and unified framework based on parity-check matrix to analyze the bounds of LRCs is proposed, and several new explicit bounds on the minimum distance of LRCs in terms of the field size are presented. In particular, we give an alternate proof of the Singleton-like bound for LRCs first proved by Gopalan et al. Some structural properties on optimal LRCs that achieve the Singleton-like bound are given. Then, we focus on constructions of optimal LRCs over the binary field. It is proved that there are only five classes of possible parameters with which optimal binary LRCs exist. Moreover, by employing the proposed parity-check matrix approach, we completely enumerate all these five classes of optimal binary LRCs attaining the Singleton-like bound in the sense of equivalence of linear codes. Locally repairable codes (LRCs) and codes with hierarchical locality (H-LRCs) have a great significance due to their applications in distributed storage systems. Constructing LRCs or H-LRCs achieving the Singleton-type bound is a challenging task and has received much attention. A Locally Recoverable Code is a code such that the value of any single coordinate of a codeword can be recovered from the values of a small subset of other coordinates. When we have $\delta $ non-overlapping subsets of cardinality $r_{i}$ that can be used to recover the missing coordinate we say that a linear code $\mathcal {C}$ with length $n$ , dimension $k$ , minimum distance $d$ has $(r_{1},\ldots, r_\delta)$ -locality and denote by $[n, k, d; r_{1}, r_{2}, {\dots }, r_\delta]$. In this paper we provide a new upper bound for the minimum distance of these codes. Linear complementary dual (LCD) codes are a class of linear codes introduced by Massey in 1964. LCD codes have been extensively studied in literature recently. In addition to their applications in data storage, communications systems, and consumer electronics, LCD codes have been employed in cryptography. More specifically, it has been shown that LCD codes can also help improve the security of the information processed by sensitive devices, especially against so-called side-channel attacks (SCA) and fault non-invasive attacks. In this paper, we are interested in the construction of particular algebraic geometry LCD codes which could be good candidates to be resistant against SCA. We firstly provide a construction scheme for obtaining LCD codes from any algebraic curve. Then, some explicit LCD codes from elliptic curves are presented. Maximum distance separable (MDS) codes are of the most importance in coding theory due to their theoretical significance and practical interests. In this paper, all the constructed LCD codes from elliptic curves are MDS or almost MDS. Some infinite classes of LCD codes from elliptic curves are optimal due to the Griesmer bound. Cyclic codes are widely employed in communication systems, storage devices, and consumer electronics, as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. BCH codes, as a special subclass of cyclic codes, are in most cases among the best cyclic codes. A subclass of good BCH codes are the narrow-sense BCH codes over \mathrm GF(q) with length n=(q^m-1)/(q-1) . Little is known about this class of BCH codes when $q>2$ . The objective of this paper is to study some of the codes within this class. In particular, the dimension, the minimum distance, and the weight distribution of some ternary BCH codes with length n=(3^{m}-1)/2 are determined in this paper. Minimal linear codes have interesting applications in secret sharing schemes and secure two-party computation. This paper uses characteristic functions of some subsets of $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ to construct minimal linear codes. By properties of characteristic functions, we can obtain more minimal binary linear codes from known minimal binary linear codes, which generalizes results of Ding et al. [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 64, no. 10, pp. 6536–6545, 2018]. By characteristic functions corresponding to some subspaces of $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ , we obtain many minimal linear codes, which generalizes results of [IEEE Trans. Inf. In this paper, locally repairable codes which have optimal minimum Hamming distance with respect to the bound presented by Prakash et al. are considered. New upper bounds on the length of such optimal codes are derived. The new bounds apply to more general cases, and have weaker requirements compared with the known ones. In this sense, they both improve and generalize previously known bounds. Further, optimal codes are constructed, whose length is order-optimal with respect to the new upper bounds. Minimal linear codes have significant applications in secret sharing schemes and secure two-party computation. There are several methods to construct linear codes, one of which is based on functions over finite fields. Recently, many construction methods for linear codes from functions have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, we generalize the recent construction methods given by Tang et al. in [IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 62(3), 1166-1176, 2016] to weakly regular plateaued functions over finite fields of odd characteristic. We first construct three-weight linear codes from weakly regular plateaued functions based on the second generic construction and then determine their weight distributions. We also give a punctured version and subcode of each constructed code. We note that they may be (almost) optimal codes and can be directly employed to obtain (democratic) secret sharing schemes, which have diverse applications in the industry. As an optimal combinatorial object, zero-difference balanced (ZDB) functions introduced by Ding in 2008, are a generalization of the well-known perfect nonlinear functions. ZDB functions have received much attention in recent years due to its important applications in coding theory and sequence design. One objective of this paper is to present a construction of ZDB functions based on a kind of generalized cyclotomy. It generates ZDB functions over cyclic group with new parameters which can not be produced by earlier constructions. Another objective of this paper is to employ these ZDB functions to obtain at the same time: 1) optimal constant-composition codes; 2) perfect difference systems of sets; and 3) optimal frequency-hopping sequences, all with new parameters. This paper provides a link between matroid theory and locally repairable codes (LRCs) that are either linear or more generally almost affine. Using this link, new results on both LRCs and matroid theory are derived. The parameters $(n,k,d,r,\delta )$ of LRCs are generalized to matroids, and the matroid analog of the generalized singleton bound by Gopalan et al. for linear LRCs is given for matroids. It is shown that the given bound is not tight for certain classes of parameters, implying a nonexistence result for the corresponding locally repairable almost affine codes that are coined perfect in this paper. Constructions of classes of matroids with a large span of the parameters $(n,k,d,r,\delta )$ and the corresponding local repair sets are given. Using these matroid constructions, new LRCs are constructed with prescribed parameters. The hull of linear codes has promising utilization in coding theory and quantum coding theory. In this paper, we study the hull of generalized Reed–Solomon codes and extended generalized Reed–Solomon codes over finite fields with respect to the Euclidean inner product. Several infinite families of MDS codes with hulls of arbitrary dimensions are presented. As an application, using these MDS codes with hulls of arbitrary dimensions, we construct several new infinite families of entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes with flexible parameters. Like classical block codes, a locally repairable code also obeys the Singleton-type bound (we call a locally repairable code optimal if it achieves the Singleton-type bound). In the breakthrough work of Tamo and Barg, several classes of optimal locally repairable codes were constructed via subcodes of Reed–Solomon codes. Thus, the lengths of the codes given by Tamo and Barg are upper bounded by the code alphabet size $q$. Recently, it was proved through the extension of construction by Tamo and Barg that the length of $q$ -ary optimal locally repairable codes can be $q+1$ by Jin et al. Surprisingly, Barg et al. presented a few examples of $q$ -ary optimal locally repairable codes of small distance and locality with code length achieving roughly $q^{2}$. Very recently, it was further shown in the work of Li et al. that there exist $q$ -ary optimal locally repairable codes with the length bigger than $q+1$ and the distance proportional to $n$. Thus, it becomes an interesting and challenging problem to construct new families of $q$ -ary optimal locally repairable codes of length bigger than $q+1$. In this paper, we construct a class of optimal locally repairable codes of distances 3 and 4 with unbounded length (i.e., length of the codes is independent of the code alphabet size). Linear complementary dual (LCD) cyclic codes were referred historically to as reversible cyclic codes, which had applications in data storage. Due to a newly discovered application in cryptography, there has been renewed interest in LCD codes. In particular, it has been shown that binary LCD codes play an important role in implementations against side-channel attacks and fault injection attacks. In this paper, we first present a new characterization of binary LCD codes in terms of their orthogonal or symplectic basis. Using such a characterization, we solve a conjecture proposed by Galvez et al. on the minimum distance of binary LCD codes. Next, we consider the action of the orthogonal group on the set of all LCD codes, determine all possible orbits of this action, derive simple closed formulas of the size of the orbits, and present some asymptotic results on the size of the corresponding orbits. Our results show that almost all binary LCD codes are odd-like codes with odd-like duals, and about half of $q$ -ary LCD codes have orthonormal basis, where $q$ is a power of an odd prime. An error-erasure channel is a simple noise model that introduces both errors and erasures. While the two types of errors can be corrected simultaneously with error-correcting codes, it is also known that any linear code allows for first correcting errors and then erasures in two-step decoding. In particular, a carefully designed parity-check matrix not only allows for separating erasures from errors but also makes it possible to efficiently correct erasures. The separating redundancy of a linear code is the number of parity-check equations in a smallest parity-check matrix that has the required property for this error-erasure separation. In a sense, it is a parameter of a linear code that represents the minimum overhead for efficiently separating erasures from errors. While several bounds on separating redundancy are known, there still remains a wide gap between upper and lower bounds except for a few limited cases. In this paper, using probabilistic combinatorics and design theory, we improve both upper and lower bounds on separating redundancy. We also show a relation between parity-check matrices for error-erasure separation and special matrices, called X-codes, for data compaction circuits in VLSI testing. In addition to their applications in data communication and storage, linear codes also have nice applications in combinatorics and cryptography. Minimal linear codes, a special type of linear codes, are preferred in secret sharing. In this paper, a necessary and sufficient condition for a binary linear code to be minimal is derived. This condition enables us to obtain three infinite families of minimal binary linear codes with $w_{\min }/w_{\max } \leq 1/2$ from a generic construction, where $w_{\min }$ and $w_{\max }$ , respectively, denote the minimum and maximum nonzero weights in a code. Linear complementary-dual (LCD for short) codes are linear codes that intersect with their duals trivially. LCD codes have been used in certain communication systems. It is recently found that LCD codes can be applied in cryptography. This application of LCD codes renewed the interest in the construction of LCD codes having a large minimum distance. Maximum distance separable (MDS) codes are optimal in the sense that the minimum distance cannot be improved for given length and code size. Constructing LCD MDS codes is thus of significance in theory and practice. Recently, Jin constructed several classes of LCD MDS codes through generalized Reed-Solomon codes. In this paper, a different approach is proposed to obtain new LCD MDS codes from generalized Reed-Solomon codes. The projective special linear group ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$ is 2-transitive for all primes $n$ and 3-homogeneous for $n \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$ on the set $\{0,1, \ldots, n-1, \infty \}$. It is known that the extended odd-like quadratic residue codes are invariant under ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. Hence, the extended quadratic residue codes hold an infinite family of 2-designs for primes $n \equiv 1 \pmod {4}$ , an infinite family of 3-designs for primes $n \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$. To construct more $t$ -designs with $t \in \{2, 3\}$ , one would search for other extended cyclic codes over finite fields that are invariant under the action of ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. Linear codes with a few weights have applications in consumer electronics, communication, data storage system, secret sharing, authentication codes, association schemes, and strongly regular graphs. This paper first generalizes the method of constructing two-weight and three-weight linear codes of Ding et al. and Zhou et al. to general weakly regular bent functions and determines the weight distributions of these linear codes. It solves an open problem proposed by Ding et al. Furthermore, this paper constructs new linear codes with two or three weights and presents their weight distributions. In this paper, a generic construction of codebooks based on binary codes is introduced. With this generic construction, a few previous constructions of optimal codebooks are extended, and a new class of codebooks almost meeting the Levenshtein bound is presented. Exponentially many codebooks meeting or almost meeting the Levenshtein bound from binary codes are obtained in this paper. The codebooks constructed in this paper have alphabet size 4. A code is said to be an $r$ -local locally repairable code (LRC) if each of its coordinates can be repaired by accessing at most r$ other coordinates. When some of the r$ coordinates are also erased, the r$ -local LRC cannot accomplish the local repair, which leads to the concept of (r,\delta)$ -locality. A q is said to have (r, \delta)$ -locality ( \delta \ge 2$ ) if for each coordinate i with support containing $i$ , whose length is at most $r + \delta - 1$ , and whose minimum distance is at least $\delta$ . In this paper, we construct a class of optimal $q$ -ary cyclic $(r,\delta)$ -LRCs ( $\delta \ge 2$ ) with length $n\mid q-1$ , which generalizes the results of Tamo et al. Moreover, we construct a new class of optimal $q$ -ary cyclic $r$ -local LRCs with lengths $n\mid q+1$ and a new class of optimal $q$ -ary cyclic $(r,\delta)$ -LRCs ( $\delta \ge 2$ ) with lengths $n\mid q+1$ . In this paper, we construct a new family of quantum synchronizable codes from repeated-root cyclic codes of lengths p^s and lp^s over \mathbb Fq , where $s\geq 1~and l\geq 2$ are integers, and $p\geq 3$ is the odd characteristic. Within some loose limitations, these synchronizable codes can possess the best possible capability in synchronization recovery, and therefore, enriches the variety of good quantum synchronizable codes. Furthermore, by using known techniques in classical coding theory which convert the computation of the minimum distance of a repeated-root cyclic code to that of a shorter simple-root cyclic code, we prove that the repeated-root cyclic codes of lengths p^s and lp^s are in general better than narrow-sense BCH codes of close lengths in terms of minimum distances, and thereby enable the obtained synchronizable codes to correct more Pauli errors. We study the communication efficient secret sharing (CESS) problem. A classical threshold secret sharing scheme encodes a secret into $n$ shares given to n$ parties, such that any set of at least t$ , t n$ . However, Staircase codes may require dividing the secret and the shares into many symbols. Symbol-pair codes introduced by Cassuto and Blaum (2010) are designed to protect against pair errors in symbol-pair read channels. The higher the minimum pair distance, the more pair errors the code can correct. Maximum distance separable (MDS) symbol-pair codes are optimal in the sense that pair distance cannot be improved for given length and code size. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we present three lower bounds for the minimum pair distance of constacyclic codes, the first two of which generalize the previously known results due to Cassuto and Blaum (2011) and Kai et al. (2015). The third one exhibits a lower bound for the minimum pair distance of repeated-root cyclic codes. Codes over Galois rings have been studied extensively during the last three decades. Negacyclic codes over \mathop \mathrm GR\nolimits (2^a,m) of length 2^s have been characterized: the ring \mathcal R2(a,m,-1)= {\mathrm{ GR}}(2^{a},m)[x]/\langle x^{2^{s}}+1\rangle is a chain ring. Furthermore, these results have been generalized to \lambda -constacyclic codes for any unit \lambda of the form 4z-1 , . In this paper, we study more general cases and investigate all cases, where {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma) = {\mathrm{ GR}}(p^{a},m)[x]/\langle x^{p^{s}}-\gamma \rangle is a chain ring. In particular, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the ring {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma) to be a chain ring are obtained. In addition, by using this structure we investigate all \gamma -constacyclic codes over \mathop {\mathrm {GR}}\nolimits (p^{a},m) when {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma)$ is a chain ring. Reed–Muller (RM) codes encode an m -variate polynomial of degree at most r by evaluating it on all points in \0,1\^m . We denote this code by RM(r,m) . The minimum distance of RM(r,m) is 2^{m-r} and so it cannot correct more than half that number of errors in the worst case. For random errors one may hope for a better result. In this paper we give an efficient algorithm (in the block length n=2^{m} ) for decoding random errors in RM codes far beyond the minimum distance. Specifically, for low-rate codes (of degree r=o(\sqrt m) ), we can correct a random set of (1/2-o(1))n errors with high probability. For high rate codes (of degree m-r for r=o(\sqrt {m/\log m}) ), we can correct roughly m^{r/2}$ errors. The algorithm is based on solving a carefully defined set of linear equations and thus it is significantly different than other algorithms for decoding RM codes that are based on the recursive structure of the code. In this paper, we present a construction of linear codes over \mathbb F2^{t} from Boolean functions, which is a generalization of Ding’s method. Based on this construction, we give two classes of linear codes \tilde \mathcal Cf and \mathcal Cf over \mathbb F2^{t} from a Boolean function f: \mathbb Fq\rightarrow \mathbb F 2 , where q=2^n and \mathbb F2^{t} is some subfield of \mathbb Fq . The complete weight enumerator of \tilde \mathcal Cf can be easily determined from the Walsh spectrum of f , while the weight distribution of the code f . As applications of this construction, we show several series of linear codes over \mathbb F2^t with two or three weights by using bent, semibent, monomial and quadratic Boolean function f . One central theme in quantum error-correction is to construct quantum codes that have a relatively large minimum distance. In this paper, we first present a construction of classical linear codes based on certain classes of polynomials. Through these classical linear codes, we are able to obtain some new quantum codes. Locally repairable codes (LRCs) are a class of codes designed for the local correction of erasures. They have received considerable attention in recent years due to their applications in distributed storage. Most existing results on LRCs do not explicitly take into consideration the field size $q$ , i.e., the size of the code alphabet. In particular, for the binary case, only a few results are known. In this paper, we present an upper bound on the minimum distance $d$ of linear LRCs with availability, based on the work of Cadambe and Mazumdar. The bound takes into account the code length $n$ , dimension $k$ , locality $r$ , availability $t$ , and field size $q$ . Then, we study the binary linear LRCs in three aspects. First, we focus on analyzing the locality of some classical codes, i.e., cyclic codes and Reed–Muller codes, and their modified versions, which are obtained by applying the operations of extend, shorten, expurgate, augment, and lengthen. Next, we construct LRCs using phantom parity-check symbols and multi-level tensor product structure, respectively. Compared with other previous constructions of binary LRCs with fixed locality or minimum distance, our construction is much more flexible in terms of code parameters, and gives various families of high-rate LRCs, some of which are shown to be optimal with respect to their minimum distance. Finally, the availability of LRCs is studied. We investigate the locality and availability properties of several classes of one-step majority-logic decodable codes, including cyclic simplex codes, cyclic difference-set codes, and 4-cycle free regular low-density parity-check codes. The generalized Hamming weights (GHWs) of linear codes are fundamental parameters, the knowledge of which is of great interest in many applications. However, to determine the GHWs of linear codes is difficult in general. In this paper, we study the GHWs for a family of reducible cyclic codes and obtain the complete weight hierarchy in several cases. This is achieved by extending the idea of Yang et al. into higher dimension and by employing some interesting combinatorial arguments. Constacyclic codes which generalize the classical cyclic codes have played important roles in recent constructions of many new quantum maximum distance separable (MDS) codes. However, the mathematical mechanism may not have been fully understood. In this paper, we use pseudo-cyclic codes, which is a further generalization of constacyclic codes, to construct the quantum MDS codes. For a linear code, deep holes are defined to be vectors that are further away from codewords than all other vectors. The problem of deciding whether a received word is a deep hole for generalized Reed–Solomon (GRS) codes is proved to be co-NP-complete by Guruswami and Vardy. For the extended Reed–Solomon codes RSq( \mathbb {F}q,k) , a conjecture was made to classify deep holes by Cheng and Murray. Since then efforts have been made to prove the conjecture, or its various forms. In this paper, we classify deep holes completely for GRS codes RSp (D,k) , where $p$ is a prime, |D| > k \geqslant ({p-1})/{2} . In this paper, we extend two earlier works further in two directions and compute the weight distribution of these cyclic codes under more relaxed conditions. Quadratic residue codes are a well-known class of codes. In this paper, we consider the constructions of self-dual codes by higher power residues, especially fourth power residues. New infinite families of self-dual codes over GF(2), GF(3), GF(4), GF(8), and GF(9) are introduced. Some of them have better minimum weight than previously known codes. Cyclic codes are an interesting class of linear codes due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. Bose-Ray-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes form a subclass of cyclic codes and are very important in both theory and practice as they have good error-correcting capability and are widely used in communication systems, storage devices, and consumer electronics. Recently, there has been intensive research on the weight distributions of cyclic codes. In this paper, we compute the weight distributions of three classes of cyclic codes with Niho exponents. More specifically, we obtain two classes of binary three-weight and four-weight cyclic codes and a class of nonbinary four-weight cyclic codes. The weight distributions follow from the determination of value distributions of certain exponential sums.
