We propose a successive cancellation list (SCL) encoding and decoding scheme for the Gelfand Pinsker (GP) problem based on the known nested polar coding scheme. It applies SCL encoding for the source coding part, and SCL decoding with a properly defined CRC for the channel coding part. The scheme shows improved performance compared to the existing method. A known issue with nested polar codes for binary dirty paper is the existence of frozen channel code bits that are not frozen in the source code. These bits need to be retransmitted in a second phase of the scheme, thus reducing the rate and increasing the required blocklength. We provide an improved bound on the size of this set, and on its scaling with respect to the blocklength, when the Bhattacharyya parameter of the test channel used for source coding is sufficiently large, or the Bhattacharyya parameter of the channel seen at the decoder is sufficiently small. The result is formulated for an arbitrary binary-input memoryless GP problem, since unlike the previous results, it does not require degradedness of the two channels mentioned above. We introduce a fundamental lemma called the Poisson matching lemma, and apply it to prove one-shot achievability results for various settings, namely channels with state information at the encoder, lossy source coding with side information at the decoder, joint source-channel coding, broadcast channels, distributed lossy source coding, multiple access channels and channel resolvability. Our one-shot bounds improve upon the best known one-shot bounds in most of the aforementioned settings (except multiple access channels and channel resolvability, where we recover bounds comparable to the best known bounds), with shorter proofs in some settings even when compared to the conventional asymptotic approach using typicality. The Poisson matching lemma replaces both the packing and covering lemmas, greatly simplifying the error analysis. This paper extends the work of Li and El Gamal on Poisson functional representation, which mainly considered variable-length source coding settings, whereas this paper studies fixed-length settings, and is not limited to source coding, showing that the Poisson functional representation is a viable alternative to typicality for most problems in network information theory. We investigate the equilibrium behavior for the decentralized cheap talk problem for real random variables and quadratic cost criteria in which an encoder and a decoder have misaligned objective functions. In prior work, it has been shown that the number of bins in any equilibrium has to be countable, generalizing a classical result due to Crawford and Sobel who considered sources with density supported on [0, 1]. In this paper, we first refine this result in the context of log-concave sources. For sources with two-sided unbounded support, we prove that, for any finite number of bins, there exists a unique equilibrium. In contrast, for sources with semi-unbounded support, there may be a finite upper bound on the number of bins in equilibrium depending on certain conditions stated explicitly. Moreover, we prove that for log-concave sources, the expected costs of the encoder and the decoder in equilibrium decrease as the number of bins increases. Furthermore, for strictly log-concave sources with two-sided unbounded support, we prove convergence to the unique equilibrium under best response dynamics which starts with a given number of bins, making a connection with the classical theory of optimal quantization and convergence results of Lloyd’s method. In addition, we consider more general sources which satisfy certain assumptions on the tail(s) of the distribution and we show that there exist equilibria with infinitely many bins for sources with two-sided unbounded support. This paper studies an $n$ -dimensional additive Gaussian noise channel with a peak-power-constrained input. It is well known that, in this case, when $n=1$ the capacity-achieving input distribution is discrete with finitely many mass points, and when $n>1$ the capacity-achieving input distribution is supported on finitely many concentric shells. However, due to the previous proof technique, not even a bound on the exact number of mass points/shells was available. This paper provides an alternative proof of the finiteness of the number mass points/shells of the capacity-achieving input distribution while producing the first firm bounds on the number of mass points and shells, paving an alternative way for approaching many such problems. The first main result of this paper is an order tight implicit bound which shows that the number of mass points in the capacity-achieving input distribution is within a factor of two from the number of zeros of the downward shifted capacity-achieving output probability density function. Next, this implicit bound is utilized to provide a first firm upper on the support size of optimal input distribution, an $O(\mathsf {A}^{2})$ upper bound where $\mathsf {A}$ denotes the constraint on the input amplitude. The second main result of this paper generalizes the first one to the case when $n>1$ , showing that, for each and every dimension $n\ge 1$ , the number of shells that the optimal input distribution contains is $O(\mathsf {A}^{2})$. Blowfish privacy is a recent generalisation of differential privacy that enables improved utility while maintaining privacy policies with semantic guarantees, a factor that has driven the popularity of differential privacy in computer science. This paper relates Blowfish privacy to an important measure of privacy loss of information channels from the communications theory community: min-entropy leakage. Symmetry in an input data neighbouring relation is central to known connections between differential privacy and min-entropy leakage. But while differential privacy exhibits strong symmetry, Blowfish neighbouring relations correspond to arbitrary simple graphs owing to the framework’s flexible privacy policies. To bound the min-entropy leakage of Blowfish-private mechanisms we organise our analysis over symmetrical partitions corresponding to orbits of graph automorphism groups. In this paper, we consider a recently-proposed model of teaching and learning under uncertainty, in which a teacher receives independent observations of a single bit corrupted by binary symmetric noise, and sequentially transmits to a student through another binary symmetric channel based on the bits observed so far. After a given number $n$ of transmissions, the student outputs an estimate of the unknown bit, and we are interested in the exponential decay rate of the error probability as $n$ increases. We propose a novel block-structured teaching strategy in which the teacher encodes the number of 1s received in each block, and show that the resulting error exponent is the binary relative entropy $D\left({\frac {1}{2}\|\max (p,q)}\right)$ , where $p$ and $q$ are the noise parameters. This matches a trivial converse result based on the data processing inequality, and settles two conjectures of [Jog and Loh, 2021] and [Huleihel et al., 2019]. In addition, we show that the computation time required by the teacher and student is linear in $n$. We also study a more general setting in which the binary symmetric channels are replaced by general binary-input discrete memoryless channels. We provide an achievability bound and a converse bound, and show that the two coincide in certain cases, including (i) when the two channels are identical, and (ii) when the student-teacher channel is a binary symmetric channel. A coding scheme for transmission of a bit maps a given bit to a sequence of channel inputs (called the codeword associated with the transmitted bit). In this paper, we study the problem of designing the best code for a discrete Poisson channel with memory (under peak-power and total-power constraints). The outputs of a discrete Poisson channel with memory are Poisson distributed random variables with a mean comprising of a fixed additive noise and a linear combination of past input symbols. Assuming a maximum-likelihood (ML) decoder, we search for a codebook that has the smallest possible error probability. This problem is challenging because error probability of a code does not have a closed-form analytical expression. For the case of having only a total-power constraint, the optimal code structure is obtained, provided that the blocklength is greater than the memory length of the channel. For the case of having only a peak-power constraint, the optimal code is derived for arbitrary memory and blocklength in the high-power regime. For the case of having both the peak-power and total-power constraints, the optimal code is derived for memoryless Poisson channels when both the total-power and the peak-power bounds are large. In many information-theoretic channel coding problems, adding an input cost constraint to the operational setup amounts to restricting the optimization domain in the capacity formula. This paper shows that, in contrast to common belief, such a simple modification does not hold for the cost-constrained (CC) wiretap channel (WTC). The secrecy-capacity of the discrete memoryless (DM) WTC without cost constraints is described by a single auxiliary random variable. For the CC DM-WTC, however, we show that two auxiliaries are necessary to achieve capacity. Specifically, we first derive the secrecy-capacity formula, proving the direct part via superposition coding. Then, we provide an example of a CC DM-WTC whose secrecy-capacity cannot be achieved using a single auxiliary. This establishes the fundamental role of superposition coding over CC WTCs. Lossless variable-length source coding with codeword cost is considered for general sources. The problem setting, where we impose on unequal costs on code symbols, is called the variable-length coding with codeword cost. In this problem, the infimum of average codeword cost have already been determined for general sources. On the other hand, the overflow probability, which is defined as the probability of codeword cost being above a threshold, have not been considered yet. In this paper, we first determine the infimum of achievable threshold in the first-order sense and the second-order sense for general sources with additive memoryless codeword cost. In this paper, we establish a new bound tying together the effective length and the maximum correlation between the outputs of an arbitrary pair of Boolean functions which operate on two sequences of correlated random variables. We derive a new upper bound on the correlation between the outputs of these functions. The upper bound may find applications in problems in many areas which deal with common information. We build upon Witsenhausen’s result on maximum correlation. The present upper bound takes into account the effective length of the Boolean functions in characterizing the correlation. We use the new bound to characterize the communication-cooperation tradeoff in multi-terminal communications. We investigate binary block-codes (BBC). A BBC is defined as a vector of Boolean functions. We consider an ensemble of BBCs which is randomly generated using single-letter distributions. We characterize the vector of dependency spectrums of these BBCs. We use this vector to bound the correlation between the outputs of two distributed BBCs. Finally, the upper bound is used to show that the large blocklength single-letter coding schemes studied in the literature are sub-optimal in various multi-terminal communication settings. This paper establishes the exact exponents for the soft-covering phenomenon of a memoryless channel under the total variation metric when random (i.i.d. and constant-composition) channel codes are used. The exponents, established herein, are strict improvements in both directions on bounds found in the literature. This complements the recent literature establishing the exact exponents under the relative entropy metric; however, the proof techniques have significant differences, and thus, neither result trivially implies the other. The found exponents imply new and improved bounds for various problems that use soft-covering as their achievability argument, including new lower bounds for the resolvability exponent and the secrecy exponent in the wiretap channel. The minimal set of Shannon-type inequalities (or elemental inequalities) plays a central role in efficiently determining whether a given inequality is in fact Shannon-type or not and in computing the linear programming bound for network coding capacity. In many cases, random variables under consideration are subject to additional constraints, such as functional dependence and conditional independence constraints. For example, functional dependence constraints are common in many communication problems due to deterministic encoding and decoding constraints. In other situations, the variables involved may form a Markov chain or in general a Markov random field, leading to conditional independence constraint. Subject to additional constraints, the challenge is how to identify the non-redundant inequalities. While one can always numerically determine the non-redundant inequalities (subject to additional linear equality constraints), it will be instrumental and also important if the non-redundant inequalities can be listed explicitly. This paper shows that for any random variables $X$ and $Y$ , it is possible to represent $Y$ as a function of $(X,Z)$ such that $Z$ is independent of $X$ and $I(X;Z|Y)\le \log (I(X;Y)+1)+4$ bits. We use this strong functional representation lemma (SFRL) to establish a bound on the rate needed for one-shot exact channel simulation for general (discrete or continuous) random variables, strengthening the results by Harsha et al. and Braverman and Garg, and to establish new and simple achievability results for one-shot variable-length lossy source coding, multiple description coding, and Gray–Wyner system. We also show that the SFRL can be used to reduce the channel with state noncausally known at the encoder to a point-to-point channel, which provides a simple achievability proof of the Gelfand–Pinsker theorem. The ordering of communication channels was first introduced by Shannon. In this paper, we aim to find characterizations of two orderings: input-degradedness and the Shannon ordering. A channel $W$ is said to be input-degraded from another channel $W'$ if $W$ can be simulated from $W'$ by randomization at the input. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a channel to be input-degraded from another one. We show that any decoder that is good for $W$ is also good for $W'$. We provide two characterizations for input-degradedness, one of which is similar to the Blackwell-Sherman-Stein theorem. We show that $W'$ contains $W$ (in the Shannon ordering sense) if and only if $W$ is the skew-composition of $W'$ with a convex-product $n$ channel. In this paper, we study a security problem on a simple wiretap network, consisting of a source node S, a destination node D, and an intermediate node R. The intermediate node connects the source and the destination nodes via a set of noiseless parallel channels, with sizes n1 and n2 , respectively. A message $M$ is to be sent from S to D. The information in the network may be eavesdropped by a set of wiretappers. The wiretappers cannot communicate with one another. Each wiretapper can access a subset of channels, called a wiretap set. All the chosen wiretap sets form a wiretap pattern. A random key $K$ is generated at S, and a coding scheme on $(M, K)$ is employed to protect $M$ . We define two decoding classes at D. In Class-I, only $M$ is required to be recovered, and in Class-II, both $M$ and $K$ are required to be recovered. The objective is to minimize $H(K)/H(M)$ for a given wiretap pattern under the perfect secrecy constraint. The first question we address is whether routing is optimal on this simple network. By enumerating all the wiretap patterns on the Class-I/II (3, 3) networks and harnessing the power of Shannon-type inequalities, we find that gaps exist between the bounds implied by routing and the bounds implied by Shannon-type inequalities for a small fraction (<2%) of all the wiretap patterns. The second question we investigate is the following: What is $\min H(K)/H(M)$ for the remaining wiretap patterns where gaps exist? We study some simple wiretap patterns and find that their Shannon bounds (i.e., the lower bound induced by Shannon-type inequalities) can be achieved by linear codes, which means routing is not sufficient even for the (3, 3) network. For some complicated wiretap patterns, we study the structures of linear coding schemes under the assumption that they can achieve the corresponding Shannon bounds. This paper indicates that the determination of the entropic region of six linear vector spaces cannot be sidestepped. This paper introduces a new and ubiquitous framework for establishing achievability results in network information theory problems. The framework uses random binning arguments and is based on a duality between channel and source coding problems. Furthermore, the framework uses pmf approximation arguments instead of counting and typicality. This allows for proving coordination and strong secrecy problems, where certain statistical conditions on the distribution of random variables need to be satisfied. These statistical conditions include independence between messages and eavesdropper’s observations in secrecy problems and closeness to a certain distribution (usually, i.i.d. distribution) in coordination problems. One important feature of the framework is to enable one to add an eavesdropper and obtain a result on the secrecy rates for free. We make a case for generality of the framework by studying examples in a variety of settings including channel coding, lossy source coding, joint source-channel coding, coordination, strong secrecy, feedback, and relaying. In particular, by investigating the framework for the lossy source coding problem over broadcast channel, it is shown that the new framework provides a simple alternative scheme to the hybrid coding scheme. In addition, new results on secrecy rate region (under strong secrecy criterion) of wiretap broadcast channel and wiretap relay channel are derived. In a set of accompanied papers, we have shown the usefulness of the framework to establish achievability results for coordination problems, including interactive channel simulation, coordination via relay and channel simulation via another channel. In this paper, a general binary-input binary-output channel is investigated in the presence of feedback and input constraints. The feedback capacity and the optimal input distribution of this setting are calculated for the case of an $(1,\infty )$ -RLL input constraint, that is, the input sequence contains no consecutive ones. These results are obtained via explicit solution of an equivalent dynamic programming optimization problem. A simple coding scheme is designed based on the principle of posterior matching, which was introduced by Shayevitz and Feder for memoryless channels. The posterior matching scheme for our input-constrained setting is shown to achieve capacity using two new ideas: history bits, which captures the memory embedded in our setting, and message-interval splitting, which eases the analysis of the scheme. Additionally, in the special case of an S-channel, we give a very simple zero-error coding scheme that is shown to achieve capacity. This paper gives upper and lower bounds on the minimum error probability of Bayesian $M$ -ary hypothesis testing in terms of the Arimoto–Rényi conditional entropy of an arbitrary order $\alpha $ . The improved tightness of these bounds over their specialized versions with the Shannon conditional entropy ( $\alpha =1$ ) is demonstrated. In particular, in the case where $M$ is finite, we show how to generalize Fano’s inequality under both the conventional and list-decision settings. As a counterpart to the generalized Fano’s inequality, allowing $M$ to be infinite, a lower bound on the Arimoto–Rényi conditional entropy is derived as a function of the minimum error probability. Explicit upper and lower bounds on the minimum error probability are obtained as a function of the Arimoto–Rényi conditional entropy for both positive and negative $\alpha $ . Furthermore, we give upper bounds on the minimum error probability as functions of the Rényi divergence. This paper studies the performance of sparse regression codes for lossy compression with the squared-error distortion criterion. In a sparse regression code, code words are linear combinations of subsets of columns of a design matrix. It is shown that with minimum-distance encoding, sparse regression codes achieve the Shannon rate-distortion function for i.i.d. Gaussian sources R^ (D) as well as the optimal excess-distortion exponent. This completes a previous result which showed that R^ (D) and the optimal exponent were achievable for distortions below a certain threshold. The proof of the rate-distortion result is based on the second moment method, a popular technique to show that a non-negative random variable $X$ is strictly positive with high probability. In our context, $X$ is the number of code words within target distortion $D$ of the source sequence. We first identify the reason behind the failure of the standard second moment method for certain distortions, and illustrate the different failure modes via a stylized example. We then use a refinement of the second moment method to show that R^ (D) is achievable for all distortion values. Recently, a secrecy measure based on list-reconstruction has been proposed, in which a wiretapper is allowed to produce a list of 2^mRL reconstruction sequences and the secrecy is measured by the minimum distortion over the entire list. In this paper, we show that this list secrecy problem is equivalent to the one with secrecy measured by a new quantity lossy equivocation, which is proved to be the minimum optimistic one-achievable source coding rate (the minimum coding rate needed to reconstruct the source within target distortion with positive probability for infinitely many blocklengths) of the source with the wiretapped signal as two-sided information, and also can be seen as a lossy extension of conventional equivocation. Upon this (or list) secrecy measure, we study source-channel secrecy problem in the discrete memoryless Shannon cipher system with noisy wiretap channel. Two inner bounds and an outer bound on the achievable region of secret key rate, list rate, wiretapper distortion, and distortion of legitimate user are given. The inner bounds are derived by using uncoded scheme and (operationally) separate scheme, respectively. Thanks to the equivalence between lossy-equivocation secrecy and list secrecy, information spectrum method is leveraged to prove the outer bound. As special cases, the admissible region for the case of degraded wiretap channel or lossless communication for legitimate user has been characterized completely. For both these two cases, separate scheme is proved to be optimal. Interestingly, however, separation indeed suffers performance loss for other certain cases. Besides, we also extend our results to characterize the achievable region for Gaussian communication case. As a side product, optimistic lossy source coding has also been addressed. Shannon’s analysis of the fundamental capacity limits for memoryless communication channels has been refined over time. In this paper, the maximum volume M_ \mathrm avg^*(n,\epsilon ) of length- n codes subject to an average decoding error probability \epsilon is shown to satisfy the following tight asymptotic lower and upper bounds as n \to \infty : , where C is the Shannon capacity, V_\epsilon is the \epsilon -channel dispersion, or second-order coding rate, Q and \overline A_\epsilon are explicitly identified. This expression holds under mild regularity assumptions on the channel, including nonsingularity. The gap \overline A_\epsilon - \underline A_\epsilon is one nat for weakly symmetric channels in the Cover–Thomas sense, and typically a few nats for other symmetric channels, for the binary symmetric channel, and for the $Z$ channel. The derivation is based on strong large-deviations analysis and refined central limit asymptotics. A random coding scheme that achieves the lower bound is presented. An open problem in polarization theory is to determine the binary operations that always lead to polarization (in the general multilevel sense) when they are used in Arıkan style constructions. This paper, which is presented in two parts, solves this problem by providing a necessary and sufficient condition for a binary operation to be polarizing. This (second) part provides a foundation of polarization theory based on the ergodic theory of binary operations which we developed in the first part. We show that a binary operation is polarizing if and only if it is uniformity preserving and its right-inverse is strongly ergodic. The rate of polarization of single user channels is studied. It is shown that the exponent of any polarizing operation cannot exceed \frac 12 , which is the exponent of quasi-group operations. We also study the polarization of multiple access channels (MAC). In particular, we show that a sequence of binary operations is MAC-polarizing if and only if each binary operation in the sequence is polarizing. In this paper, we explore the three-node multi-terminal lossy source coding problem, which seems to offer a formidable mathematical complexity. We derive an inner bound to the general rate-distortion region of this problem, which is a natural extension of the seminal work by Kaspi on the interactive two-terminal source coding problem. It is shown that this (rather involved) inner bound contains several rate-distortion regions of some relevant source coding settings. In this way, besides the non-trivial extension of the interactive two terminal problem, our results can be seen as a generalization and hence unification of several previous works in the field. We consider a communication network consisting of nodes and directed edges that connect the nodes. The network may contain cycles. The communications are slotted where the duration of each time slot is equal to the maximum propagation delay experienced by the edges. The edges with negligible delays are allowed to be operated before the other edges in each time slot. For any pair of adjacent edges $(\ell , i)$ and $(i,j)$ , where $(\ell ,i)$ terminates at node $i$ and $(i,j)$ originates from node $i$ , we say $(\ell ,i)$ incurs zero delay on $(i,j)$ if $(\ell ,i)$ is operated before $(i,j)$ ; otherwise, we say $(\ell ,i)$ incurs a unit delay on $(i,j)$ . In the classical model, every edge incurs a unit delay on every adjacent edge and the cut-set bound is a well-known outer bound on the capacity region. In this paper, we investigate the multimessage multicast network (MMN) consisting of independent channels, where each channel is associated with a set of edges and each edge may incur zero delay on some other edges. Our result reveals that the capacity region of the MMN with independent channels and zero-delay edges lies within the classical cut-set bound despite a violation of the unit-delay assumption. This paper investigates the maximal channel coding rate achievable at a given blocklength $ n$ and error probability \epsilon $ , when the codewords are subjected to a long-term (i.e., averaged-over-all-codeword) power constraint. The second-order term in the large-n expansion of the maximal channel coding rate is characterized both for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels and for quasi-static fading channels with perfect channel state information available at both the transmitter and the receiver. It is shown that in both the cases, the second-order term is proportional to ({n ^{-1}\ln n })^{1/2} . For the quasi-static fading case, this second-order term is achieved by truncated channel inversion, namely, by concatenating a dispersion-optimal code for an AWGN channel subject to a short-term power constraint, with a power controller that inverts the channel whenever the fading gain is above a certain threshold. This paper shows the strong converse and the dispersion of memoryless channels with cost constraints and performs a refined analysis of the third-order term in the asymptotic expansion of the maximum achievable channel coding rate, showing that it is equal to (1/ 2)((\log n)/n) in most cases of interest. The analysis is based on a nonasymptotic converse bound expressed in terms of the distribution of a random variable termed the $\mathsf b$ -tilted information density, which plays a role similar to that of the $\mathsf d$ -tilted information in lossy source coding. In coding schemes for the wire-tap channel or for broadcast channels with confidential messages, it is well-known that the sender needs to use stochastic encoding to avoid information about the transmitted confidential message from being leaked to an eavesdropper. In this paper, we investigate the tradeoff between the rate of random numbers needed to realize the stochastic encoding and the rates of common, private, and confidential messages. For the direct theorem, we use the superposition coding scheme for the wire-tap channel, recently proposed by Chia and El Gamal, and its strong security is proved. The matching converse theorem is also established. Our result clarifies that a combination of ordinary stochastic encoding and channel prefixing by channel simulation is suboptimal. In this paper, we study the capacity/entropy region of finite, directed, acyclic, multiple-sources, and multiple-sinks network by means of group theory and entropy vectors coming from groups. There is a one-to-one correspondence between the entropy vector of a collection of \(n\) random variables and a certain group-characterizable vector obtained from a finite group and \(n\) of its subgroups. We are looking at nilpotent group characterizable entropy vectors and show that they are all also abelian group characterizable, and hence they satisfy the Ingleton inequality. It is known that not all entropic vectors can be obtained from abelian groups, so our result implies that to get more exotic entropic vectors, one has to go at least to soluble groups or larger nilpotency classes.
