Linear codes generated by component functions of perfect nonlinear (PN for short) and almost perfect nonlinear (APN for short) functions and the first-order Reed-Muller codes have been an object of intensive study in coding theory. The objective of this paper is to investigate some binary shortened codes of two families of linear codes from APN functions and some $p$ -ary shortened codes associated with PN functions. The weight distributions of these shortened codes and the parameters of their duals are determined. The parameters of these binary codes and $p$ -ary codes are flexible. Many of the codes presented in this paper are optimal or almost optimal. The results of this paper show that the shortening technique is very promising for constructing good codes. The binary quadratic-residue codes and the punctured Reed-Muller codes ${\mathcal {R}}_{2}((m-1)/2, m))$ are two families of binary cyclic codes with parameters $[n, (n+1)/2, d \geq \sqrt {n}]$. These two families of binary cyclic codes are interesting partly due to the fact that their minimum distances have a square-root bound. The objective of this paper is to construct two families of binary cyclic codes of length $2^{m}-1$ and dimension near $2^{m-1}$ with good minimum distances. When $m \geq 3$ is odd, the codes become a family of duadic codes with parameters $[2^{m}-1, 2^{m-1}, d]$ , where $d \geq 2^{(m-1)/2}+1$ if $m \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$ and $d \geq 2^{(m-1)/2}+3$ if $m \equiv 1 \pmod {4}$. $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive codes are subgroups of $\mathbb {Z}^{n}_{2^{s}}$ , and can be seen as a generalization of linear codes over $\mathbb {Z}_{2}$ and $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$. A $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -linear code is a binary code (not necessarily linear) which is the Gray map image of a $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive code. We consider $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive simplex codes of type $\alpha $ and $\beta $ , which are a generalization over $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ of the binary simplex codes. These codes are related to the $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive Hadamard codes. In this paper, we use this relationship to find a linear subcode of the corresponding $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -linear codes, called kernel, and a representation of these codes as cosets of this kernel. In this paper, we determine all dihedral subgroups in $PGL_{2}(\mathbb {F}_{q})$ , where $q=2^{l}$ and $l$ is a positive integer; and construct binary expurgated and extended Goppa codes with dihedral automorphism groups. In this paper, we mainly study quaternary linear codes and their binary subfield codes. First we obtain a general explicit relationship between quaternary linear codes and their binary subfield codes in terms of generator matrices and defining sets. Second, we construct quaternary linear codes via simplicial complexes and determine the weight distributions of these codes. Third, the weight distributions of the binary subfield codes of these quaternary codes are also computed by employing the general characterization. Furthermore, we present two infinite families of optimal linear codes with respect to the Griesmer Bound, and a class of binary almost optimal codes with respect to the Sphere Packing Bound. The binary Hamming codes with parameters $[{2^{m}-1, 2^{m}-1-m, 3}]$ are perfect. Their extended codes have parameters $[{2^{m}, 2^{m}-1-m, 4}]$ and are distance-optimal. The first objective of this paper is to construct a class of binary linear codes with parameters $[{2^{m+s}+2^{s}-2^{m},2^{m+s}+2^{s}-2^{m}-2m-2,4}]$ , which have better information rates than the class of extended binary Hamming codes, and are also distance-optimal. The second objective is to construct a class of distance-optimal binary codes with parameters $[{2^{m}+2, 2^{m}-2m, 6}]$. Both classes of binary linear codes have new parameters. The largest minimum weights among quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes are known for dimension 2. In this paper, we give some conditions on the nonexistence of quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes with large minimum weights. As a consequence, we completely determine the largest minimum weights for dimension 3, by using a classification of some quaternary codes. In addition, for a positive integer s, an entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting $[[21{s}+5,3,16{s}+3;21{s}+2]]$ code with maximal entanglement is constructed for the first time from a quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual [26, 3, 19] code. Bent functions, or equivalently, Hadamard difference sets in the elementary Abelian group (${\mathrm {GF}}(2^{2m}), $ +), have been employed to construct symmetric and quasi-symmetric designs having the symmetric difference property. The main objective of this paper is to use bent vectorial functions for a construction of a two-parameter family of binary linear codes that do not satisfy the conditions of the Assmus–Mattson theorem, but nevertheless hold 2-designs. In this paper, two different Gray-like maps from $Z_{p}^\alpha \times Z_{p^{k}}^\beta $ , where $p$ is prime, to $Z_{p}^{n}$ , $n={\alpha +\beta p^{k-1}}$ , denoted by $\varphi $ and $\Phi $ , respectively, are presented. We have determined the connection between the weight enumerators among the image codes under these two mappings. We show that if $C$ is a $Z_{p} Z_{p^{k}}$ -additive code, and $C^\bot $ is its dual, then the weight enumerators of the image $p$ -ary codes $\varphi (C)$ and $\Phi (C^\bot)$ are formally dual. This is a partial generalization of [D. S. Krotov, On $Z_{2^{k}}$ -dual binary codes, IEEE Transactions Information Theory 53 (2007), 1532–1537], and the result is generalized to odd characteristic $p$ and mixed alphabet. Linear complementary dual (LCD) cyclic codes were referred historically to as reversible cyclic codes, which had applications in data storage. Due to a newly discovered application in cryptography, there has been renewed interest in LCD codes. In particular, it has been shown that binary LCD codes play an important role in implementations against side-channel attacks and fault injection attacks. In this paper, we first present a new characterization of binary LCD codes in terms of their orthogonal or symplectic basis. Using such a characterization, we solve a conjecture proposed by Galvez et al. on the minimum distance of binary LCD codes. Next, we consider the action of the orthogonal group on the set of all LCD codes, determine all possible orbits of this action, derive simple closed formulas of the size of the orbits, and present some asymptotic results on the size of the corresponding orbits. Our results show that almost all binary LCD codes are odd-like codes with odd-like duals, and about half of $q$ -ary LCD codes have orthonormal basis, where $q$ is a power of an odd prime. The projective special linear group ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$ is 2-transitive for all primes $n$ and 3-homogeneous for $n \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$ on the set $\{0,1, \ldots, n-1, \infty \}$. It is known that the extended odd-like quadratic residue codes are invariant under ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. Hence, the extended quadratic residue codes hold an infinite family of 2-designs for primes $n \equiv 1 \pmod {4}$ , an infinite family of 3-designs for primes $n \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$. To construct more $t$ -designs with $t \in \{2, 3\}$ , one would search for other extended cyclic codes over finite fields that are invariant under the action of ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. The objective of this paper is to prove that the extended quadratic residue binary codes are the only nontrivial extended binary cyclic codes that are invariant under ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. This paper deals with Hadamard \mathbb Z2 \mathbb Z4 {Q}8 -codes, which are binary codes after a Gray map from a subgroup of direct products of \mathbb Z2 , \mathbb Z4 , and Q8 , where Q8 is the quaternionic group. In a previous work, these codes were classified in five shapes. In this paper, we analyze the allowable range of values for the rank and dimension of the kernel, which depends on the particular shape of the code. We show that all these codes can be represented in a standard form, from a set of generators, which can help in understanding the characteristics of each shape. The main results we present are the characterization of Hadamard \mathbb Z2 \mathbb Z4 {Q}8 -codes as a quotient of a semidirect product of \mathbb Z2 \mathbb Z4 -linear codes and the construction of Hadamard \mathbb Z2 \mathbb Z4 {Q}8 -codes with each allowable pair of values for the rank and dimension of the kernel. Following the very recent studies on \mathbb Z2\mathbb Z4 -additive codes, \mathbb Z2\mathbb Z2[u] -linear codes have been introduced by Aydogdu et al. In this paper, we introduce and study the algebraic structure of cyclic, constacyclic codes and their duals over the R -module \mathbb {Z}_{2}^\alpha R^\beta where R=\mathbb {Z}_{2}+u\mathbb {Z}_{2}=\left \{{0,1,u,u+1}\right \} is the ring with four elements and u^2=0 . We determine the generating independent sets and the types and sizes of both such codes and their duals. Finally, we present a bound and an optimal family of codes attaining this bound and also give some illustrative examples of binary codes that have good parameters which are obtained from the cyclic codes in \mathbb Z_2^\alpha R^\beta . In this paper, we solve the open problems raised in [8] and present some examples to illustrate the obtained results. Moreover, we work out the diophantine problem by Shi and Wang and then give the sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of two-Lee weight projective codes over \mathbb Z4 with type 4^k12^{k2} . Recently, there has been intensive research on the weight distributions of cyclic codes. In this paper, we compute the weight distributions of three classes of cyclic codes with Niho exponents. More specifically, we obtain two classes of binary three-weight and four-weight cyclic codes and a class of nonbinary four-weight cyclic codes. The weight distributions follow from the determination of value distributions of certain exponential sums.
