Cyclic codes are widely employed in communication systems, storage devices, and consumer electronics, as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. BCH codes, as a special subclass of cyclic codes, are in most cases among the best cyclic codes. A subclass of good BCH codes are the narrow-sense BCH codes over \mathrm GF(q) with length n=(q^m-1)/(q-1) . Little is known about this class of BCH codes when $q>2$ . The objective of this paper is to study some of the codes within this class. In particular, the dimension, the minimum distance, and the weight distribution of some ternary BCH codes with length n=(3^{m}-1)/2 are determined in this paper. A class of ternary BCH codes meeting the Griesmer bound is identified. An application of some of the BCH codes in secret sharing is also investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In addition to their applications in data storage, communications systems, and consumer electronics, linear complementary dual (LCD) codes—a class of linear codes—have been employed in cryptography recently. LCD cyclic codes were referred to as reversible cyclic codes in the literature. The objective of this paper is to construct several families of reversible cyclic codes over finite fields and analyze their parameters. The LCD cyclic codes presented in this paper have very good parameters in general, and contain many optimal codes. A well rounded treatment of reversible cyclic codes is also given in this paper. Like classical block codes, a locally repairable code also obeys the Singleton-type bound (we call a locally repairable code optimal if it achieves the Singleton-type bound). In the breakthrough work of Tamo and Barg, several classes of optimal locally repairable codes were constructed via subcodes of Reed–Solomon codes. Thus, the lengths of the codes given by Tamo and Barg are upper bounded by the code alphabet size $q$. Recently, it was proved through the extension of construction by Tamo and Barg that the length of $q$ -ary optimal locally repairable codes can be $q+1$ by Jin et al. Surprisingly, Barg et al. presented a few examples of $q$ -ary optimal locally repairable codes of small distance and locality with code length achieving roughly $q^{2}$. Very recently, it was further shown in the work of Li et al. that there exist $q$ -ary optimal locally repairable codes with the length bigger than $q+1$ and the distance proportional to $n$. Thus, it becomes an interesting and challenging problem to construct new families of $q$ -ary optimal locally repairable codes of length bigger than $q+1$. In this paper, we construct a class of optimal locally repairable codes of distances 3 and 4 with unbounded length (i.e., length of the codes is independent of the code alphabet size). Reed–Muller codes belong to the family of affine-invariant codes. As such codes, they have a defining set that determines them uniquely, and they are extensions of cyclic group codes. In this paper, we identify those cyclic codes with multidimensional abelian codes and we use the techniques introduced by Bernal and Simón to construct information sets for them from their defining set. The projective special linear group ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$ is 2-transitive for all primes $n$ and 3-homogeneous for $n \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$ on the set $\{0,1, \ldots, n-1, \infty \}$. It is known that the extended odd-like quadratic residue codes are invariant under ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. Hence, the extended quadratic residue codes hold an infinite family of 2-designs for primes $n \equiv 1 \pmod {4}$ , an infinite family of 3-designs for primes $n \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$. To construct more $t$ -designs with $t \in \{2, 3\}$ , one would search for other extended cyclic codes over finite fields that are invariant under the action of ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. The objective of this paper is to prove that the extended quadratic residue binary codes are the only nontrivial extended binary cyclic codes that are invariant under ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. In this paper, we construct a new family of quantum synchronizable codes from repeated-root cyclic codes of lengths p^s and lp^s over \mathbb Fq , where $s\geq 1~and l\geq 2$ are integers, and $p\geq 3$ is the odd characteristic. Within some loose limitations, these synchronizable codes can possess the best possible capability in synchronization recovery, and therefore, enriches the variety of good quantum synchronizable codes. Furthermore, by using known techniques in classical coding theory which convert the computation of the minimum distance of a repeated-root cyclic code to that of a shorter simple-root cyclic code, we prove that the repeated-root cyclic codes of lengths p^s and lp^s are in general better than narrow-sense BCH codes of close lengths in terms of minimum distances, and thereby enable the obtained synchronizable codes to correct more Pauli errors. Symbol-pair codes introduced by Cassuto and Blaum (2010) are designed to protect against pair errors in symbol-pair read channels. The higher the minimum pair distance, the more pair errors the code can correct. Maximum distance separable (MDS) symbol-pair codes are optimal in the sense that pair distance cannot be improved for given length and code size. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we present three lower bounds for the minimum pair distance of constacyclic codes, the first two of which generalize the previously known results due to Cassuto and Blaum (2011) and Kai et al. (2015). The third one exhibits a lower bound for the minimum pair distance of repeated-root cyclic codes. Codes over Galois rings have been studied extensively during the last three decades. Negacyclic codes over \mathop \mathrm GR\nolimits (2^a,m) of length 2^s have been characterized: the ring \mathcal R2(a,m,-1)= {\mathrm{ GR}}(2^{a},m)[x]/\langle x^{2^{s}}+1\rangle is a chain ring. Furthermore, these results have been generalized to \lambda -constacyclic codes for any unit \lambda of the form 4z-1 , . In this paper, we study more general cases and investigate all cases, where {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma) = {\mathrm{ GR}}(p^{a},m)[x]/\langle x^{p^{s}}-\gamma \rangle is a chain ring. In particular, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the ring {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma) to be a chain ring are obtained. In addition, by using this structure we investigate all \gamma -constacyclic codes over \mathop {\mathrm {GR}}\nolimits (p^{a},m) when {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma)$ is a chain ring. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of self-orthogonal and self-dual \gamma$ -constacyclic codes are also provided. In this paper, we consider optimal q -ary cyclic constant-weight codes of length n , minimum distance d , and weight w codes. We introduce the pure and mixed difference method to present a combinatorial description for a cyclic (n,d,w)_{q} code and then obtain some tight upper bounds on the sizes of optimal cyclic (n,d,w)_{q} codes. Locally repairable codes (LRCs) are a class of codes designed for the local correction of erasures. They have received considerable attention in recent years due to their applications in distributed storage. Most existing results on LRCs do not explicitly take into consideration the field size $q$ , i.e., the size of the code alphabet. In particular, for the binary case, only a few results are known. In this paper, we present an upper bound on the minimum distance $d$ of linear LRCs with availability, based on the work of Cadambe and Mazumdar. The bound takes into account the code length $n$ , dimension $k$ , locality $r$ , availability $t$ , and field size $q$ . Then, we study the binary linear LRCs in three aspects. First, we focus on analyzing the locality of some classical codes, i.e., cyclic codes and Reed–Muller codes, and their modified versions, which are obtained by applying the operations of extend, shorten, expurgate, augment, and lengthen. Next, we construct LRCs using phantom parity-check symbols and multi-level tensor product structure, respectively. Compared with other previous constructions of binary LRCs with fixed locality or minimum distance, our construction is much more flexible in terms of code parameters, and gives various families of high-rate LRCs, some of which are shown to be optimal with respect to their minimum distance. Finally, the availability of LRCs is studied. We investigate the locality and availability properties of several classes of one-step majority-logic decodable codes, including cyclic simplex codes, cyclic difference-set codes, and 4-cycle free regular low-density parity-check codes. The generalized Hamming weights (GHWs) of linear codes are fundamental parameters, the knowledge of which is of great interest in many applications. However, to determine the GHWs of linear codes is difficult in general. In this paper, we study the GHWs for a family of reducible cyclic codes and obtain the complete weight hierarchy in several cases. This is achieved by extending the idea of Yang et al. into higher dimension and by employing some interesting combinatorial arguments. Constacyclic codes which generalize the classical cyclic codes have played important roles in recent constructions of many new quantum maximum distance separable (MDS) codes. However, the mathematical mechanism may not have been fully understood. In this paper, we use pseudo-cyclic codes, which is a further generalization of constacyclic codes, to construct the quantum MDS codes. Symbol-pair read channels, in which the outputs of the read process are pairs of consecutive symbols, were recently studied by Cassuto and Blaum. This new paradigm is motivated by the limitations of the reading process in high density data storage systems. They studied error correction in this new paradigm, specifically, the relationship between the minimum Hamming distance of an error correcting code and the minimum pair distance, which is the minimum Hamming distance between symbol-pair vectors derived from codewords of the code. It was proved that for a linear cyclic code with minimum Hamming distance dH , the corresponding minimum pair distance is at least dH+3 . In this paper, we show that, for a given linear cyclic code with a minimum Hamming distance dH , the minimum pair distance is at least dH +\left \lceil{ {dH/{2}}}\right \rceil . We then describe a decoding algorithm, based upon a bounded distance decoder for the cyclic code, whose symbol-pair error correcting capabilities reflect the larger minimum pair distance. Finally, we consider the case where the read channel output is a larger number, $b \geqslant 3$ , of consecutive symbols, and we provide extensions of several concepts, results, and code constructions to this setting. This paper is devoted to studying two main problems: 1) computing the apparent distance of an Abelian code and 2) giving a notion of Bose, Ray-Chaudhuri, Hocquenghem (BCH) multivariate code. To do this, we first strengthen the notion of an apparent distance by introducing the notion of a strong apparent distance; then, we present an algorithm to compute the strong apparent distance of an Abelian code, based on some manipulations of hypermatrices associated with its generating idempotent. Our method uses less computations than those given by Camion and Sabin; furthermore, in the bivariate case, the order of computation complexity is reduced from exponential to linear. Then, we use our techniques to develop a notion of a BCH code in the multivariate case, and we extend most of the classical results on cyclic BCH codes. In this paper, we extend two earlier works further in two directions and compute the weight distribution of these cyclic codes under more relaxed conditions. It is interesting to note that many cyclic codes in the family are optimal and have only a few non-zero weights. Quadratic residue codes are a well-known class of codes. In this paper, we consider the constructions of self-dual codes by higher power residues, especially fourth power residues. New infinite families of self-dual codes over GF(2), GF(3), GF(4), GF(8), and GF(9) are introduced. Some of them have better minimum weight than previously known codes. In this paper, a number of classes of three-weight cyclic codes \(\mathcal {C}_{(1,e)}\) over \(\mathbb {F}_{p}\) , which have parity-check polynomial \(m_1(x)m_e(x)\) , are presented by examining general conditions on the parameters \(p\) , \(m\) , and \(e\) , where \(m_i(x)\) is the minimal polynomial of \(\pi ^{-i}\) over \(\mathbb {F}_{p}\) for a primitive element \(\pi \) of \(\mathbb {F}_{p^m}\) . Recently, there has been intensive research on the weight distributions of cyclic codes. In this paper, we compute the weight distributions of three classes of cyclic codes with Niho exponents. More specifically, we obtain two classes of binary three-weight and four-weight cyclic codes and a class of nonbinary four-weight cyclic codes. The weight distributions follow from the determination of value distributions of certain exponential sums.
