A functional $k$ -batch code of dimension $s$ consists of $n$ servers storing linear combinations of $s$ linearly independent information bits. Any multiset request of size $k$ of linear combinations (or requests) of the information bits can be recovered by $k$ disjoint subsets of the servers. The goal under this paradigm is to find the minimum number of servers for given values of $s$ and $k$. A recent conjecture states that for any $k=2^{s-1}$ requests the optimal solution requires $2^{s}-1$ servers. This conjecture is verified for $s \leqslant 5$ but previous work could only show that codes with $n=2^{s}-1$ servers can support a solution for $k=2^{s-2} + 2^{s-4} + \left \lfloor{ \frac { 2^{s/2}}{\sqrt {24}} }\right \rfloor $ requests. This paper reduces this gap and shows the existence of codes for $k=\lfloor \frac {5}{6}2^{s-1} \rfloor - s$ requests with the same number of servers. Another construction in the paper provides a code with $n=2^{s+1}-2$ servers and $k=2^{s}$ requests, which is an optimal result. The Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes are a well-studied subclass of cyclic codes that have found numerous applications in error correction and notably in quantum information processing. They are widely used in data storage and communication systems. A subclass of attractive BCH codes is the narrow-sense BCH codes over the Galois field ${\mathrm {GF}}(q)$ with length $q+1$ , which are closely related to the action of the projective general linear group of degree two on the projective line. Despite its interest, not much is known about this class of BCH codes. This paper aims to study some of the codes within this class and specifically narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH codes (these codes are also linear complementary duals (LCD) codes that have interesting practical recent applications in cryptography, among other benefits). We shall use tools and combine arguments from algebraic coding theory, combinatorial designs, and group theory (group actions, representation theory of finite groups, etc.) to investigate narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH Codes and extend results from the recent literature. Notably, the dimension, the minimum distance of some $q$ -ary BCH codes with length $q+1$ , and their duals are determined in this paper. The dual codes of the narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH codes derived in this paper include almost MDS codes. Furthermore, the classification of ${\mathrm {PGL}}(2, p^{m})$ -invariant codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(p^{h})$ is completed. As an application of this result, the $p$ -ranks of all incidence structures invariant under the projective general linear group ${\mathrm {PGL}}(2, p^{m})$ are determined. Furthermore, infinite families of narrow-sense BCH codes admitting a 3-transitive automorphism group are obtained. Via these BCH codes, a coding-theory approach to constructing the Witt spherical geometry designs is presented. Previous algorithms for decoding AG codes up to the designed distance all assumed existence of an extra rational place on the base algebraic curve. The place is used to solve the decoding problem by linear algebra over the base field of the curve. The rationality of the place is essential, and therefore AG codes supported by all rational places on the curve are excluded from the domain of applicability of the decoding algorithms. This paper presents a decoding algorithm for those AG codes using an extra place of higher degree. This paper investigates the decoding of a remarkable set of lattices: We treat in a unified framework the Leech lattice in dimension 24, the Nebe lattice in dimension 72, and the Barnes-Wall lattices. A new interesting lattice, named $L_{3\cdot 24}$ , is constructed as a simple application of the single parity check on the Leech lattice. The common aspect of these lattices is that they can be obtained via a single parity check or via the $k$ -ing construction. We exploit these constructions to introduce a new efficient paradigm for decoding. This leads to efficient list decoders and quasi-optimal decoders on the Gaussian channel. In this article, we present a new construction of evaluation codes in the Hamming metric, which we call twisted Reed–Solomon codes. Whereas Reed–Solomon (RS) codes are MDS codes, this need not be the case for twisted RS codes. Nonetheless, we show that our construction yields several families of MDS codes. Further, for a large subclass of (MDS) twisted RS codes, we show that the new codes are not generalized RS codes. To achieve this, we use properties of Schur squares of codes as well as an explicit description of the dual of a large subclass of our codes. This paper considers the transmission of an infinite sequence of messages (a streaming source) over a packet erasure channel, where every source message must be recovered perfectly at the destination subject to a fixed decoding delay. While the capacity of a channel that introduces only bursts of erasures has been known for more than fifteen years, only recently, the capacity of a channel with either one burst of erasures or multiple arbitrary erasures in any fixed-sized sliding window has been established. However, explicit codes shown to achieve this capacity for any admissible set of parameters require a large field size that scales exponentially with the delay. Recently, it has been shown that there exist codes that achieve the capacity with field size which scales quadratically with the delay. However, explicit constructions were shown only to specific combinations of parameters. This paper proposes the Guruswami-Sudan (GS) list decoding algorithm for one-point elliptic codes, in which the interpolation is realized by the module basis reduction (BR). Elliptic codes are a kind of algebraic-geometric (AG) codes with a genus of one. Over the same finite field, they have a greater codeword length than Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, capable of correcting more errors. The GS decoding consists of interpolation and root-finding, while the former that determines the interpolation polynomial $\mathcal {Q}(\text {x}, \text {y}, \text {z})$ dominates the decoding complexity. By defining the Lagrange interpolation function over an elliptic function field, a basis of the interpolation module can be constructed. The desired Gröbner basis that contains $\mathcal {Q}(\text {x}, \text {y}, \text {z})$ can be determined by reducing the constructed basis. This is namely the BR interpolation and it requires less finite field arithmetic operations than the conventional Kötter’s interpolation, facilitating the GS decoding. Re-encoding transform (ReT) is further introduced to facilitate the BR interpolation. This work also shows that both the BR interpolation and its ReT variant will have a lower complexity as the code rate ${k}/{n}$ increases, where n and ${k}$ are the length and dimension of the code, respectively. A Goppa code over $\Bbb F_{q^{m}}$ is a well-known subclass of algebraic error-correcting code. If $m=1$ , then it is a generalized Reed-Solomon(GRS) code and its dual code is called a GRS code via a Goppa code. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that the dual codes of GRS codes via (expurgated) Goppa codes are also GRS codes via Goppa codes. Under the above condition, we show that the hulls of GRS codes via Goppa codes are still GRS codes via Goppa codes. As an application, we characterize LCD GRS codes and self-dual GRS codes under the above condition. Some numerical examples are also presented to illustrate our main results. In this paper, we propose a systematic low density generator matrix (LDGM) code ensemble, which is defined by the Bernoulli process. We prove that, under maximum likelihood (ML) decoding, the proposed ensemble can achieve the capacity of binary-input output symmetric (BIOS) memoryless channels in terms of bit error rate (BER). The proof technique reveals a new mechanism, different from lowering down frame error rate (FER), that the BER can be lowered down by assigning light codeword vectors to light information vectors. The finite length performance is analyzed by deriving an upper bound and a lower bound, both of which are shown to be tight in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. To improve the waterfall performance, we construct the systematic convolutional LDGM (SysConv-LDGM) codes by a random splitting process. The SysConv-LDGM codes are easily configurable in the sense that any rational code rate can be realized without complex optimization. As a universal construction, the main advantage of the SysConv-LDGM codes is their near-capacity performance in the waterfall region and predictable performance in the error-floor region that can be lowered down to any target as required by increasing the density of the uncoupled LDGM codes. The notion of Generalized Hamming weights of block codes has been investigated since the nineties due to its significant role in coding theory and cryptography. In this paper we extend this concept to the context of convolutional codes. In particular, we focus on column distances and introduce the novel notion of generalized column distances (GCD). We first show that the hierarchy of GCD is strictly increasing. We then provide characterizations of such distances in terms of the truncated parity-check matrix of the code, that will allow us to determine their values. Cyclic codes have been widely used in many applications of communication systems and data storage systems. This paper proposes a new procedure for decoding cyclic codes up to actual minimum distance. The decoding procedure consists of two steps: 1) computation of known syndromes and 2) computation of error positions and error values simultaneously. To do so, a matrix whose all entries are syndromes is called syndrome matrix. A matrix whose entries are either syndromes or the elements of a finite field is said to be partial syndrome matrix. In this paper, two novel methods are presented to determine error positions and error values simultaneously and directly. The first method uses a new partial syndrome matrix along with Gaussian elimination. The partial syndrome matrices for binary (respectively, ternary) cyclic codes of lengths from 69 to 99 (respectively, 16 to 37) are tabulated. For some cyclic codes, the partial syndrome matrices contain unknown syndromes; the second method constructs a matrix from a system of equations, which is generated by the determinants of different partial syndrome matrices and makes use of Gaussian elimination to determine its row rank. Building on recent development by Padakandla and Pradhan, and by Lim, Feng, Pastore, Nazer, and Gastpar, this paper studies the potential of structured coset coding as a complete replacement for random coding in network information theory. The roles of two techniques used in coset coding to generate nonuniform codewords, namely, shaping and channel transformation, are clarified and illustrated via the simple example of the two-sender multiple access channel. While individually deficient, the optimal combination of shaping via nested coset codes of the same generator matrix (which we refer to as homologous codes) and channel transformation is shown to achieve the same performance as traditional random codes for the general two-sender multiple access channel. The achievability proof of the capacity region is extended to multiple access channels with more than two senders, and with one or more receivers. A quantization argument adapted to the proposed combination of two techniques is presented to establish the achievability proof for their Gaussian counterparts. It is illustrated by an example that combining shaping and channel transformation is useful even when the goal of transmission for a subset of the receivers is to recover a linear combination of messages. Maximum-distance separable (MDS) convolutional codes form an optimal family of convolutional codes, the study of which is of great importance. There are very few general algebraic constructions of MDS convolutional codes. In this paper, we construct a large family of partial-unit-memory MDS convolutional codes over \mathbb Fq with flexible parameters. Compared with the previous work, the field size $q$ required to define these codes is much smaller. The construction also leads to many new strongly MDS convolutional codes, an important subclass of MDS convolutional codes. Some examples are presented at the end of this paper. Algorithms for secure encryption in a post-quantum world are currently receiving a lot of attention in the research community. One of the most promising such algorithms is the code-based scheme called QC-MDPC, which has excellent performance and a small public key size. In this paper, we present a very efficient key recovery attack on the QC-MDPC scheme using the fact that decryption uses an iterative decoding step, and this can fail with some small probability. We identify a dependence between the secret key and the failure in decoding. This can be used to build what we refer to as a distance spectrum for the secret key, which is the set of all distances between any two ones in the secret key. In a reconstruction step, we then determine the secret key from the distance spectrum. The attack has been implemented and tested on a proposed instance of QC-MDPC for 80-bit security. It successfully recovers the secret key in minutes. A slightly modified version of the attack can be applied on proposed versions of the QC-MDPC scheme that provides IND-CCA security. The attack is a bit more complex in this case, but still very much below the security level. The reason why we can break schemes with proved CCA security is that the model for these proofs typically does not include the decoding error possibility. At last, we present several algorithms for key reconstruction from an empirical distance spectrum. We first improve the naïve algorithm for key reconstruction by a factor of about 3 0000, when the parameters for 80-bit security are implemented. We further develop the algorithm to deal with errors in the distance spectrum. We study the problem of constructing balanced generator matrices for Reed–Solomon and Tamo–Barg codes. More specifically, we are interested in realizing generator matrices, for the full-length cyclic versions of these codes, where all rows have the same weight and the difference in weight between any columns is at most one. The results presented in this paper translate to computationally balanced encoding schemes, which can be appealing in distributed storage applications. Indeed, the balancedness of these generator matrices guarantees that the computation effort exerted by any storage node is essentially the same. In general, the framework presented can accommodate various values for the required row weight. We emphasize the possibility of constructing sparsest and balanced generator matrices for Reed–Solomon codes, i.e., each row is a minimum distance codeword. The number of storage nodes contacted once a message symbol is updated decreases with the row weight, so sparse constructions are appealing in that context. Results of similar flavor are presented for cyclic Tamo–Barg codes. In particular, we show that for a code with minimum distance $d$ and locality $r$ , a construction in which every row is of weight $d + r - 1$ is possible. The constructions presented are deterministic and operate over the codes’ original underlying finite field. A class of cyclic codes has recently been decoded by using the weak-locator polynomials instead of the conventional error-locator polynomials. In this paper, a generalization of weak-locator polynomials to the multivariate cases, called the multivariate weak-locator polynomials, is defined, and a new matrix whose determinant can be expressed as a multivariate weak-locator polynomial is developed for cyclic codes. Moreover, a modified matrix along with Gaussian elimination found herein enables one to determine error positions precisely. The presented matrices result in a reduction of the number of syndromes when compared with the previously known matrices. The simulation shows that, for example, with the capability of correcting more errors, a considerably sophistical scheme of decoding the (97, 49, 15) binary cyclic code based on the proposed matrices is around 115 times faster than other existing decoders. Because of their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms, cyclic codes—an interesting class of linear codes—are widely used in communication systems, storage devices, and consumer electronics. BCH codes form a special class of cyclic codes, and are usually among the best cyclic codes. A subclass of good BCH codes is the narrow-sense primitive BCH codes. However, the dimension and minimum distance of these codes are not known in general. The main objective of this paper is to study the dimension and minimum distances of a subclass of the narrow-sense primitive BCH codes with design distance \delta =(q-\ell 0)q^{m-\ell 1-1}-1 for certain pairs (\ell 0, \ell 1) , where 0 \leq \ell 0 \leq q-2 and 0 \leq \ell 1 \leq m-1 . In this paper, an efficient decoding algorithm is developed to facilitate faster decoding of the binary systematic quadratic residue (QR) codes. It is based on the difference of syndromes (DS), and hence, is called the DS algorithm hereinafter. This new method combines the advantages of the syndrome-weight algorithm and properties of the cyclic codes. Actually, it is a natural generalization of the cyclic weight (CW) algorithm for the (47, 24, 11) QR code developed by Lin et al., and its validity of decoding any binary systematic QR code is also proved. The complexity analysis and simulation results show that the DS algorithm dramatically reduces the decoding complexity without performance loss and considerably requires less memory when compared with previous ones. Utilizing the (47, 24, 11), the (71, 36, 11), the (73, 37, 13), and the (89, 45, 17) QR codes as examples, the DS algorithm not only significantly improves the decoding efficiency, but also saves the memory evidently. When the (23, 12, 7) QR code is considered, the DS algorithm performs almost as well as the currently known best algorithm in terms of decoding efficiency and memory requirements. Thus, all QR codes of lengths less than 100 can be decoded efficiently by using the proposed algorithm. Especially, when the proposed algorithm is applied to decode the (89, 45, 17) QR code, the best one among all the QR codes of lengths less than 100, the decoding speed is raised 26 times and the memory is saved up to 76.6% in comparison with the existing fastest decoding algorithm. In this paper, new index coding problems are studied, where each receiver has erroneous side information. Although side information is a crucial part of index coding, the existence of erroneous side information has not been considered yet. We study an index code with receivers that have erroneous side information symbols in the error-free broadcast channel, which is called an index code with side information errors (ICSIE). The encoding and decoding procedures of the ICSIE are proposed, based on the syndrome decoding. Then, we derive the bounds on the optimal codelength of the proposed index code with erroneous side information. Furthermore, we introduce a special graph for the proposed index coding problem, called a \delta s -cycle whose properties are similar to those of the cycle in the conventional index coding problem. Properties of the ICSIE are also discussed in the \delta s -cycle and clique. Finally, the proposed ICSIE is generalized to an index code for the scenario having both additive channel errors and side information errors, called a generalized error correcting index code. Symbol-pair codes introduced by Cassuto and Blaum (2010) are designed to protect against pair errors in symbol-pair read channels. The higher the minimum pair distance, the more pair errors the code can correct. Maximum distance separable (MDS) symbol-pair codes are optimal in the sense that pair distance cannot be improved for given length and code size. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we present three lower bounds for the minimum pair distance of constacyclic codes, the first two of which generalize the previously known results due to Cassuto and Blaum (2011) and Kai et al. (2015). The third one exhibits a lower bound for the minimum pair distance of repeated-root cyclic codes. This paper considers a linear quasi-cyclic product code of two given quasi-cyclic codes of relatively prime lengths over finite fields. We give the spectral analysis of a quasi-cyclic product code in terms of the spectral analysis of the row and column codes. Moreover, we provide a new lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance of a given quasi-cyclic code and present a new algebraic decoding algorithm. More specifically, we prove an explicit (unreduced) basis of an \ell A {\ell B} -quasi-cyclic product code in terms of the generator matrix in reduced Gröbner basis with respect to the position-over-term (RGB/POT) order form of the \ell A -quasi-cyclic row code and the \ell B -quasi-cyclic column code, respectively. This generalizes the work of Burton and Weldon for the generator polynomial of a cyclic product code (where \ell A= {\ell B}=1 ). Furthermore, we derive the generator matrix in Pre-RGB/POT form of an \ell A {\ell B} -quasi-cyclic product code for two special cases: i) for \ell A=2 and \ell B=1 and ii) if the row code is a one-level \ell A -quasi-cyclic code (for arbitrary \ell A ) and \ell B=1 . For arbitrary \ell A and \ell B , the Pre-RGB/POT form of the generator matrix of an \ell A {\ell B} -quasi-cyclic product code is conjectured. The spectral analysis is applied to the generator matrix of the product of an \ell -quasi-cyclic and a cyclic code, and we propose a new lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance of a given \ell -quasi-cyclic code. Fire codes are cyclic codes generated by the product of two polynomials: a binomial that characterizes the code’s guaranteed burst-correcting capability and an irreducible polynomial that characterizes the code length. However, the true burst-correcting capability of a Fire code may exceed its guaranteed burst-correcting capability, which can be thought of as the designed burst-correcting capability of the Fire code. The true burst-correcting capability of a Fire code depends on the irreducible polynomial used in code construction. In this paper, the maximum true burst-correcting capabilities of Fire codes are considered. Fire codes are classified based on three parameters: their designed burst-correcting capabilities, the least common multiple of the periods of the binomials, and the irreducible polynomials used in their constructions, and the ratios of the periods of primitive polynomials of the same degrees as the irreducible polynomials to the periods of the irreducible polynomials. It is shown that the maximum true burst-correcting capability of each class, which pertains to an infinite number of codes, can be determined by checking whether or not a finite number of incongruences have a solution. It is also shown that in each class, there is an infinite number of Fire codes, with increasing code lengths, that attain this maximum. The maximum true burst-correcting capabilities of several classes of Fire codes are determined. It is also shown that there are infinite sequences of irreducible polynomials that generate cyclic codes of rates approaching one and with burst-correcting capabilities that exceed any given number. In this paper, the unequal error protection (UEP) capability of convolutional encoders, in terms of the separation vector, is studied from an algebraic viewpoint. A simple procedure is presented for constructing a generator matrix, which is basic and has the largest separation vector for every convolutional code. Such a generator matrix would be desirable, since the corresponding encoder not only achieves UEP optimality, but also avoids undesired catastrophic error propagation. In addition, canonical generator matrices, which are both basic and reduced, are even more preferable for encoding, since they attain the lowest complexity for Viterbi decoding. However, the direct transformation from a UEP-optimal generator matrix to a canonical generator matrix may come with an unexpected loss of the separation vector. We also propose a specific type of transformation matrix that reduces the external degrees of the generator matrices, from which canonical generator matrices can be constructed that include the mitigated degradation of the separation vector. In this paper, we propose a new way of providing cyclic structures to convolutional codes. We define the skew cyclic convolutional codes as left ideals of a quotient ring of a suitable non-commutative polynomial ring. In contrast to the previous approaches to cyclicity for convolutional codes, we use Ore polynomials with coefficients in a field (the rational function field over a finite field), so their arithmetic is very well known and we may proceed similarly to cyclic block codes. Quadratic residue codes are a well-known class of codes. In this paper, we consider the constructions of self-dual codes by higher power residues, especially fourth power residues. New infinite families of self-dual codes over GF(2), GF(3), GF(4), GF(8), and GF(9) are introduced. Some of them have better minimum weight than previously known codes. Random network coding recently attracts attention as a technique to disseminate information in a network. This paper considers a noncoherent multishot network, where the unknown and time-variant network is used several times. In order to create dependence between the different shots, particular convolutional codes in rank metric are used. These codes are so-called (partial) unit memory ((P)UM) codes, i.e., convolutional codes with memory one. First, distance measures for convolutional codes in rank metric are shown and two constructions of (P)UM codes in rank metric based on the generator matrices of maximum rank distance codes are presented. Second, an efficient error-erasure decoding algorithm for these codes is presented. Its guaranteed decoding radius is derived and its complexity is bounded. Baranyai’s theorem is well known in the theory of hypergraphs. A corollary of this theorem says that one can partition the family of all \(u\) -subsets of an \(n\) -element set into \({n-1\choose u-1}\) subfamilies such that each subfamily forms a partition of the \(n\) -element set, where \(n\) is divisible by \(u\) . In this paper, we present a coding-theoretic application of Baranyai’s theorem. More precisely, we propose a combinatorial construction of locally decodable codes. Locally decodable codes are error-correcting codes that allow the recovery of any message symbol by looking at only a few symbols of the codeword. The number of looked codeword symbols is called query complexity. Such codes have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. The Walsh–Hadamard code is a well-known binary two-query locally decodable code of exponential length that can recover any message bit using 2 bits of the codeword. Our construction can give locally decodable codes over small finite fields for any constant query complexities. Network coding can significantly improve the transmission rate of communication networks with packet loss compared with routing. However, using network coding usually incurs high computational and storage costs in the network devices and terminals. For example, some network coding schemes require the computational and/or storage capacities of an intermediate network node to increase linearly with the number of packets for transmission, making such schemes difficult to be implemented in a router-like device that has only constant computational and storage capacities. In this paper, we introduce batched sparse code (BATS code), which enables a digital fountain approach to resolve the above issue. BATS code is a coding scheme that consists of an outer code and inner code. The outer code is a matrix generation of a fountain code. It works with the inner code that comprises random linear coding at the intermediate network nodes. BATS codes preserve such desirable properties of fountain codes as ratelessness and low encoding/decoding complexity. The computational and storage capacities of the intermediate network nodes required for applying BATS codes are independent of the number of packets for transmission. Almost capacity-achieving BATS code schemes are devised for unicast networks and certain multicast networks. For general multicast networks, under different optimization criteria, guaranteed decoding rates for the destination nodes can be obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
