The number-theoretic code is a class of codes defined by single or multiple congruences. These codes are mainly used for correcting insertion and deletion errors, and for correcting asymmetric errors. This paper presents a formula for a generalization of the complete weight enumerator for the number-theoretic codes. This formula allows us to derive the weight enumerators and cardinalities for the number-theoretic codes. As a special case, this paper provides the Hamming weight enumerators and cardinalities of the non-binary Tenengolts’ codes, correcting single insertion or deletion. Moreover, we show that the formula deduces the MacWilliams identity for the linear codes over the ring of integers modulo $r$. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Linear codes achieving or nearly achieving the Singleton bound are interesting in both theory and practice. The objective of this paper is to construct several infinite families of MDS, near MDS and almost MDS codes from some special cyclic subgroups of ${\mathbb {F}}_{q^{2}}^{*}$. To this end, the augmentation and extension techniques are used. The codes in this paper have flexible parameters and their lengths could be large. The minimum linear locality of the codes constructed in this paper is also studied. Some infinite families of optimal linearly locally recoverable codes are obtained. In general coding theory, we often assume that error is observed in transferring or storing encoded symbols, while the process of encoding itself is error-free. Motivated by recent applications of coding theory, in this paper, we consider the case where the process of encoding is distributed and prone to error. We introduce the problem of distributed encoding, comprised of a set of $K \in \mathbb {N}$ isolated source nodes and $N \in \mathbb {N}$ encoding nodes. Each source node has one symbol from a finite field, which is sent to each of the encoding nodes. Each encoding node stores an encoded symbol from the same field, as a function of the received symbols. However, some of the source nodes are controlled by the adversary and may send different symbols to different encoding nodes. Depending on the number of the adversarial nodes, denoted by $\beta \in \mathbb {N}$ , and the cardinality of the set of symbols that each one generates, denoted by $v \in \mathbb {N}$ , the process of decoding from the encoded symbols could be impossible. Assume that a decoder connects to an arbitrary subset of $t \in \mathbb {N}$ encoding nodes and wants to decode the symbols of the honest nodes correctly, without necessarily identifying the sets of honest and adversarial nodes. An important characteristic of a distributed encoding system is $t^{*} \in \mathbb {N}$ , the minimum of such $t$ , which is a function of $K$ , $N$ , $\beta $ , and $v$. In this paper, we study the distributed linear encoding system, i.e. one in which the encoding nodes use linear coding. We show that $t^{*}_{\textrm {Linear}}=K+2\beta (v-1)$ , if $N\ge K+2\beta (v-1)$ , and $t^{*}_{\textrm {Linear}}=N$ , if $N\le K+2\beta (v-1)$. In order to achieve $t^{*}_{\textrm {Linear}}$ , we use random linear coding and show that in any feasible solution that the decoder finds, the messages of the honest nodes are decoded correctly. In order to prove the converse of the fundamental limit, we show that when the adversary behaves in a particular way, it can always confuse the decoder between two feasible solutions that differ in the message of at least one honest node. A functional $k$ -batch code of dimension $s$ consists of $n$ servers storing linear combinations of $s$ linearly independent information bits. Any multiset request of size $k$ of linear combinations (or requests) of the information bits can be recovered by $k$ disjoint subsets of the servers. The goal under this paradigm is to find the minimum number of servers for given values of $s$ and $k$. A recent conjecture states that for any $k=2^{s-1}$ requests the optimal solution requires $2^{s}-1$ servers. This conjecture is verified for $s \leqslant 5$ but previous work could only show that codes with $n=2^{s}-1$ servers can support a solution for $k=2^{s-2} + 2^{s-4} + \left \lfloor{ \frac { 2^{s/2}}{\sqrt {24}} }\right \rfloor $ requests. This paper reduces this gap and shows the existence of codes for $k=\lfloor \frac {5}{6}2^{s-1} \rfloor - s$ requests with the same number of servers. Another construction in the paper provides a code with $n=2^{s+1}-2$ servers and $k=2^{s}$ requests, which is an optimal result. The Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes are a well-studied subclass of cyclic codes that have found numerous applications in error correction and notably in quantum information processing. They are widely used in data storage and communication systems. A subclass of attractive BCH codes is the narrow-sense BCH codes over the Galois field ${\mathrm {GF}}(q)$ with length $q+1$ , which are closely related to the action of the projective general linear group of degree two on the projective line. Despite its interest, not much is known about this class of BCH codes. This paper aims to study some of the codes within this class and specifically narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH codes (these codes are also linear complementary duals (LCD) codes that have interesting practical recent applications in cryptography, among other benefits). We shall use tools and combine arguments from algebraic coding theory, combinatorial designs, and group theory (group actions, representation theory of finite groups, etc.) to investigate narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH Codes and extend results from the recent literature. Notably, the dimension, the minimum distance of some $q$ -ary BCH codes with length $q+1$ , and their duals are determined in this paper. The dual codes of the narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH codes derived in this paper include almost MDS codes. Furthermore, the classification of ${\mathrm {PGL}}(2, p^{m})$ -invariant codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(p^{h})$ is completed. As an application of this result, the $p$ -ranks of all incidence structures invariant under the projective general linear group ${\mathrm {PGL}}(2, p^{m})$ are determined. Furthermore, infinite families of narrow-sense BCH codes admitting a 3-transitive automorphism group are obtained. Via these BCH codes, a coding-theory approach to constructing the Witt spherical geometry designs is presented. This paper formulates a distributed computation problem, where a master asks ${\mathsf N}$ distributed workers to compute a linearly separable function. The task function can be expressed as ${\mathsf K}_{\mathrm{ c}}$ linear combinations of ${\mathsf K}$ messages, where each message is a function of one dataset. Our objective is to find the optimal tradeoff between the computation cost (number of uncoded datasets assigned to each worker) and the communication cost (number of symbols the master must download), such that from the answers of any ${\mathsf N}_{\mathrm{ r}}$ out of ${\mathsf N}$ workers the master can recover the task function with high probability, where the coefficients of the ${\mathsf K}_{\mathrm{ c}}$ linear combinations are uniformly i.i.d. over some large enough finite field. The formulated problem can be seen as a generalized version of some existing problems, such as distributed gradient coding and distributed linear transform. In this paper, we consider the specific case where the computation cost is minimum, and propose novel achievability schemes and converse bounds for the optimal communication cost. Achievability and converse bounds coincide for some system parameters; when they do not match, we prove that the achievable distributed computing scheme is optimal under the constraint of a widely used ‘cyclic assignment’ scheme on the datasets. Our results also show that when ${\mathsf K}= {\mathsf N}$ , with the same communication cost as the optimal distributed gradient coding scheme proposed by Tandon et al. from which the master recovers one linear combination of ${\mathsf K}$ messages, our proposed scheme can let the master recover any additional ${\mathsf N}_{\mathrm{ r}}-1$ independent linear combinations of messages with high probability. Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity are important cryptographic primitives in some stream ciphers. In this paper, two methodologies for constructing minimal binary codes from sets, Boolean functions and vectorial Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity, are proposed. More precisely, a general construction of new minimal codes using minimal codes contained in Reed-Muller codes and sets without nonzero low degree annihilators is presented. The other construction allows us to yield minimal codes from certain subcodes of Reed-Muller codes and vectorial Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity. Via these general constructions, infinite families of minimal binary linear codes of dimension $m$ and length less than or equal to $m(m+1)/2$ are obtained. Besides, a lower bound on the minimum distance of the proposed minimal linear codes is established. Conjectures and open problems are also presented. The results of this paper show that Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity have nice applications in several fields additionally to symmetric cryptography, such as coding theory and secret sharing schemes. Two general constructions of linear codes with functions over finite fields have been extensively studied in the literature. The first one is given by C(ƒ) = {Tr(aƒ(x) + bx)x∈Fqm*: a, b ∈ Fqm}, where q is a prime power, Fqm* = Fqm \ {0}, Tr is the trace function from Fqm to Fq, and ƒ(x) is a function from Fqm to Fqm with ƒ(0) = 0. Almost bent functions, quadratic functions and some monomials on F2m were used in the first construction, and many families of binary linear codes with few weights were obtained in the literature. This paper studies some punctured codes of these binary codes. Several families of binary linear codes with few weights and new parameters are obtained in this paper. The puncturing and shortening techniques are two important approaches to constructing new linear codes from old ones. In the past 70 years, a lot of progress on the puncturing technique has been made, and many works on punctured linear codes have been done. Many families of linear codes with interesting parameters have been obtained with the puncturing technique. However, little research on the shortening technique has been done and there are only a handful references on shortened linear codes. The first objective of this paper is to prove some general theory for shortened linear codes. The second objective is to study some shortened codes of the Hamming codes, Simplex codes, some Reed-Muller codes, and ovoid codes. Eleven families of optimal shortened codes over finite fields are presented in this paper. In 1991, Wei proved a duality theorem that established an interesting connection between the generalized Hamming weights of a linear code and those of its dual code. Wei’s duality theorem has since been extensively studied from different perspectives and extended to other settings. In this paper, we re-examine Wei’s duality theorem and its various extensions, henceforth referred to as Wei-type duality theorems, from a new Galois connection perspective. Our approach is based on the observation that the generalized Hamming weights and the dimension/length profiles of a linear code form a Galois connection. The central result of this paper is a general Wei-type duality theorem for two Galois connections between finite subsets of $\mathbb {Z}$ , from which all the known Wei-type duality theorems can be recovered. As corollaries of our central result, we prove new Wei-type duality theorems for $w$ -demi-matroids defined over finite sets and $w$ -demi-polymatroids defined over modules with a composition series, which further allows us to unify and generalize all the known Wei-type duality theorems established for codes endowed with various metrics. The family of Goppa codes is one of the most interesting subclasses of linear codes. As the McEliece cryptosystem often chooses a random Goppa code as its key, knowledge of the number of inequivalent Goppa codes for fixed parameters may facilitate in the evaluation of the security of such a cryptosystem. In this paper we present a new approach to give an upper bound on the number of inequivalent extended irreducible binary Goppa codes. To be more specific, let $n>3$ be an odd prime number and $q=2^{n}$ ; let $r\geq 3$ be a positive integer satisfying $\gcd (r,n)=1$ and $\gcd \big (r,q(q^{2}-1)\big)=1$. Tang and Ding [IEEE IT 67 (2021) 244-254] studied the class of BCH codes $\mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ and their dual codes with $q=2^{m}$ and established that the codewords of the minimum (or the second minimum) weight in these codes support 4-designs or 3-designs. Motivated by this, we further investigate the codewords of the next adjacent weight in such codes and discover more infinite classes of $t$ -designs with $t=3,4$. In particular, we prove that codewords of weight 7 in $\mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ support 4-designs for odd $m \geqslant 5$ and they support 3-designs for even $m \geqslant 4$ , which provide infinite classes of simple $t$ -designs with new parameters. Another significant class of $t$ -designs we produce in this paper has complementary designs with parameters 4- $(2^{2s+1}+ 1,5,5)$ ; these designs have the smallest index among all the known simple 4- $(q+1,5,\lambda)$ designs derived from codes for prime powers $q$ ; and they are further proved to be isomorphic to the 4-designs admitting the projective general linear group PGL $(2,2^{2s+1})$ as the automorphism group constructed by Alltop in 1969. Erasure codes are essential for providing efficient resilience against node failures in distributed storage. Typically, an $[n, k]$ erasure code encodes $k$ symbols into $n$ symbols which are then stored in different nodes. Recent work by Kadekodi et al. shows that the failure rates of storage nodes vary significantly over time, and that changing the rate of the code (via a change in $n$ and $k$) in response to such variations provides substantial storage space savings. However, the resource overhead of re-encoding the already encoded data is prohibitively high. We present a new theoretical framework formalizing code conversion—the process of converting data encoded with an $[n^{ I}, k^{ I}]$ code into data encoded with an $[{n^{ F}}, {k^{ F}}]$ code while maintaining desired decodability properties. We then introduce convertible codes, a new class of codes that allow for code conversions in a resource-efficient manner. This paper begins the study on convertible codes by focusing on linear MDS codes and the access cost of conversion. We derive a lower bound on the access cost of conversion and present an explicit optimal construction matching this bound for an important subclass of conversions. Additionally, we propose constructions with low field-size requirement for a broad subset of parameters. The Euclidean hull of a linear code $C$ is the intersection of $C$ with its Euclidean dual $C^\perp $. The hull with low dimensions gets much interest due to its crucial role in determining the complexity of algorithms for computing the automorphism group of a linear code and for checking permutation equivalence of two linear codes. The Euclidean hull of a linear code has been applied to the so-called entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECCs) via classical error-correcting codes. In this paper, we firstly consider linear codes with one-dimensional Euclidean hull from algebraic geometry codes, and then present a general method to construct linear codes with arbitrary dimensional Euclidean hull. Recently, subfield codes of geometric codes over large finite fields ${\mathrm {GF}}(q)$ with dimension 3 and 4 were studied and distance-optimal subfield codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(p)$ were obtained, where $q=p^{m}$. The key idea for obtaining very good subfield codes over small fields is to choose very good linear codes over an extension field with small dimension. This paper first presents a general construction of $[q+1, 2, q]$ MDS codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(q)$ , and then studies the subfield codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(p)$ of some of the $[q+1, 2,q]$ MDS codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(q)$. Two families of dimension-optimal codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(p)$ are obtained, and several families of nearly optimal codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(p)$ are produced. Previous algorithms for decoding AG codes up to the designed distance all assumed existence of an extra rational place on the base algebraic curve. The place is used to solve the decoding problem by linear algebra over the base field of the curve. The rationality of the place is essential, and therefore AG codes supported by all rational places on the curve are excluded from the domain of applicability of the decoding algorithms. This paper presents a decoding algorithm for those AG codes using an extra place of higher degree. Linear codes generated by component functions of perfect nonlinear (PN for short) and almost perfect nonlinear (APN for short) functions and the first-order Reed-Muller codes have been an object of intensive study in coding theory. The objective of this paper is to investigate some binary shortened codes of two families of linear codes from APN functions and some $p$ -ary shortened codes associated with PN functions. The weight distributions of these shortened codes and the parameters of their duals are determined. The parameters of these binary codes and $p$ -ary codes are flexible. Many of the codes presented in this paper are optimal or almost optimal. The results of this paper show that the shortening technique is very promising for constructing good codes. Insertion–deletion codes (insdel codes for short) play an important role in synchronization error correction. The higher the minimum insdel distance, the more insdel errors the code can correct. Haeupler and Shahrasbi established the Singleton bound for insdel codes: the minimum insdel distance of any $[n,k]$ linear code over $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ satisfies $d\leq 2n-2k+2$. There have been some constructions of insdel codes through Reed-Solomon codes with high capabilities, but none has come close to this bound. Recently, Do Duc et al. showed that the minimum insdel distance of any $[n,k]$ Reed-Solomon code is no more than $2n-2k$ if $q$ is large enough compared to the code length $n$ ; optimal codes that meet the new bound were also constructed explicitly. The contribution of this paper is twofold. We first show that the minimum insdel distance of any $[n,k]$ linear code over $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ satisfies $d\leq 2n-2k$ if $n > k > 1$. This result improves and generalizes the previously known results in the literature. We then give a sufficient condition under which the minimum insdel distance of a 2-D Reed-Solomon code of length $n$ over $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ is exactly equal to $2n-4$. As a consequence, we show that the sufficient condition is not hard to achieve; we explicitly construct an infinite family of optimal 2-D Reed-Somolom codes meeting the bound. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Linear codes with few weights have applications in consumer electronics, communications, data storage systems, secret sharing, authentication codes, and association schemes. As a special class of linear codes, minimal linear codes have important applications in secret sharing and secure computation of data between two parties. The construction of minimal linear codes with new and desirable parameters is an interesting research topic in coding theory and cryptography. Recently, Mesnager et.al. stated that “constructing linear codes with good parameters from non-weakly regular bent functions is an interesting problem.” The goal of this paper is to construct linear codes with two or three weights from non-weakly regular bent functions over finite fields and analyze the minimality of the constructed linear codes. In doing so, we draw inspiration from a paper by Mesnager in which she constructed linear codes with small weights from weakly regular bent functions based on a generic construction method. First, we recall the definitions of the subsets $B_{+}(f)$ and $B_{-}(f)$ associated with a non-weakly regular bent function $f$. Next, we construct two- or three-weight linear $p$ -ary codes on these sets using duals of the non-weakly regular bent functions that are also bent. We note that the constructed linear codes are minimal in almost all cases. Moreover, when $f$ is a non-weakly regular bent function in a certain subclass of Generalized Maiorana-McFarland bent functions, we determine the weight distributions of the corresponding linear codes. As far as we know, the construction of linear codes from non-weakly regular bent functions over finite fields is first studied in the literature by the second author in his dissertation. It is well-known that cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In recent years, antiprimitive BCH codes have attracted a lot of attention. The objective of this paper is to study BCH codes of this type over finite fields and analyse their parameters. Some lower bounds on the minimum distance of antiprimitive BCH codes are given. The BCH codes presented in this paper have good parameters in general, containing many optimal linear codes. In this paper, we introduce the notion of generalized pair weights of an $[n, k]$ -linear code over the finite field $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ and the notion of pair $r$ -equiweight codes, where $1\le r\le k-1$. Some basic properties of generalized pair weights of linear codes over finite fields are derived. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for an $[n,k]$ -linear code to be a pair equiweight code, and we characterize pair $r$ -equiweight codes for any $1\le r\le k-1$. A necessary and sufficient condition for a linear isomorphism to preserve pair weights between two linear codes is obtained. Quantum error-correcting codes play the role of suppressing noise and decoherence in quantum systems by introducing redundancy. Some strategies can be used to improve the parameters of these codes. For example, entanglement can provide a way for quantum error-correcting codes to achieve higher rates than the one obtained by means of the traditional stabilizer formalism. Such codes are called entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting (EAQEC) codes. In this paper, we utilize algebraic geometry codes to construct several families of EAQEC codes derived from the Euclidean and the Hermitian construction. Three families constructed here consist of codes whose quantum Singleton defect is equal to zero, one, or two. We also construct families of EAQEC codes with an encoding rate exceeding the quantum Gilbert-Varshamov bound. Additionally, asymptotically good towers of linear complementary dual codes are used to obtain asymptotically good families of EAQEC codes consuming maximal entanglement. Furthermore, a simple comparison with the quantum Gilbert-Varshamov bound demonstrates that, by utilizing the proposed construction, it is possible to generate an asymptotically family of EAQEC codes that exceeds this bound. This paper focuses on constructions of MDS self-dual codes from (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes. Let $q = r^{2}$ be an odd prime power. We show that, there exists a $q$ -ary self-dual (extended) GRS code for each even length in the range $[{2r,3r-3}]$ , and for each singly even length in the range $[3r-1,4r]$. This extends the only known consecutive range $[2,2r]$ to $[{2,3r-3}]$ for this case. Self-orthogonal codes are an important type of linear codes due to their wide applications in communication and cryptography. The Euclidean (or Hermitian) hull of a linear code is defined to be the intersection of the code and its Euclidean (or Hermitian) dual. It is clear that the hull is self-orthogonal. The main goal of this paper is to obtain self-orthogonal codes by investigating the hulls. Let $\mathcal {C}_{(r,r^{m}-1,\delta,b)}$ be the primitive BCH code over $\mathbb {F}_{r}$ of length $r^{m}-1$ with designed distance $\delta $ , where $\mathbb {F}_{r}$ is the finite field of order $r$. In this paper, we will present Euclidean (or Hermitian) self-orthogonal codes and determine their parameters by investigating the Euclidean (or Hermitian) hulls of some primitive BCH codes. Several sufficient and necessary conditions for primitive BCH codes with large Hermitian hulls are developed by presenting lower and upper bounds on their designed distances. Furthermore, some Hermitian self-orthogonal codes are proposed via the hulls of BCH codes and their parameters are also investigated. In addition, we determine the dimensions of the code $\mathcal {C}_{(r,r^{2}-1,\delta,1)}$ and its hull in both Hermitian and Euclidean cases for $2 \le \delta \le r^{2}-1$. Both linear complementary dual (LCD) codes and maximum distance separable (MDS) codes have good algebraic structures, and they have interesting practical applications such as communication systems, data storage, quantum codes, and so on. So far, most of LCD MDS codes have been constructed by employing generalized Reed-Solomon codes. In this paper we construct some classes of new Euclidean LCD MDS codes and Hermitian LCD MDS codes which are not monomially equivalent to Reed-Solomon codes, called LCD MDS codes of non-Reed-Solomon type. Our method is based on the constructions of Beelen et al. (2017) and Roth and Lempel (1989). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper on the construction of LCD MDS codes of non-Reed-Solomon type; any LCD MDS code of non-Reed-Solomon type constructed by our method is not monomially equivalent to any LCD code constructed by the method of Carlet et al. The binary quadratic-residue codes and the punctured Reed-Muller codes ${\mathcal {R}}_{2}((m-1)/2, m))$ are two families of binary cyclic codes with parameters $[n, (n+1)/2, d \geq \sqrt {n}]$. These two families of binary cyclic codes are interesting partly due to the fact that their minimum distances have a square-root bound. The objective of this paper is to construct two families of binary cyclic codes of length $2^{m}-1$ and dimension near $2^{m-1}$ with good minimum distances. When $m \geq 3$ is odd, the codes become a family of duadic codes with parameters $[2^{m}-1, 2^{m-1}, d]$ , where $d \geq 2^{(m-1)/2}+1$ if $m \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$ and $d \geq 2^{(m-1)/2}+3$ if $m \equiv 1 \pmod {4}$. Twisted generalized Reed-Solomon (TGRS) codes are a family of codes that contains a large number of maximum distance separable (MDS) codes that are non-equivalent to generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes. In this paper, we characterize a sufficient and necessary condition that a twisted Reed-Solomon (TRS) code with two twists is MDS; give a sufficient and necessary condition that a TGRS code with two twists is self-dual, and present some constructions of self-dual TGRS codes. These self-dual codes are MDS, NMDS or 2-MDS. Furthermore, we study the non-GRS properties of TGRS codes with two twists and prove that these codes are non-GRS in most cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the list decodability of different ensembles of codes over the real alphabet under the assumption of an omniscient adversary. It is a well-known result that when the source and the adversary have power constraints $P $ and $N $ respectively, the list decoding capacity is equal to $\frac {1}{2}\log \frac {P}{N}$. Random spherical codes achieve constant list sizes, and the goal of the present paper is to obtain a better understanding of the smallest achievable list size as a function of the gap to capacity. We show a reduction from arbitrary codes to spherical codes, and derive a lower bound on the list size of typical random spherical codes. We also give an upper bound on the list size achievable using nested Construction-A lattices and infinite Construction-A lattices. We then define and study a class of infinite constellations that generalize Construction-A lattices and prove upper and lower bounds for the same. Other goodness properties such as packing goodness and AWGN goodness of infinite constellations are proved along the way. Finally, we consider random lattices sampled from the Haar distribution and show that if a certain conjecture that originates in analytic number theory is true, then the list size grows as a polynomial function of the gap-to-capacity. $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive codes are subgroups of $\mathbb {Z}^{n}_{2^{s}}$ , and can be seen as a generalization of linear codes over $\mathbb {Z}_{2}$ and $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$. A $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -linear code is a binary code (not necessarily linear) which is the Gray map image of a $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive code. We consider $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive simplex codes of type $\alpha $ and $\beta $ , which are a generalization over $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ of the binary simplex codes. These codes are related to the $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive Hadamard codes. In this paper, we use this relationship to find a linear subcode of the corresponding $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -linear codes, called kernel, and a representation of these codes as cosets of this kernel. In particular, this also gives the linearity of these codes. Similarly, $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive MacDonald codes are defined for $s>2$ , and equivalent results are obtained. Let $q\geq 2$ be a prime power. In this paper, we study the distribution of the minimum distance (in the Hamming metric) of a random linear code of dimension $k$ in $\mathbb {F}_{q}^{n}$. We provide quantitative estimates showing that the distribution function of the minimum distance is close (superpolynomially in $n$) to the cumulative distribution function of the minimum of $(q^{k}-1)/(q-1)$ independent binomial random variables with parameters $\frac {1}{q}$ and $n$. The latter, in turn, converges to a Gumbel distribution at integer points when $\frac {k}{n}$ converges to a fixed number in (0, 1). Our result confirms in a strong sense that apart from identification of the weights of proportional codewords, the probabilistic dependencies introduced by the linear structure of the random code, produce a negligible effect on the minimum code weight. Constrained codes are used to prevent errors from occurring in various data storage and data transmission systems. They can help in increasing the storage density of magnetic storage devices, in managing the lifetime of solid-state storage devices, and in increasing the reliability of data transmission over wires. Over the years, designing practical (complexity-wise) capacity-achieving constrained codes has been an area of research gaining significant interest. We recently designed various constrained codes based on lexicographic indexing. We introduced binary symmetric lexicographically-ordered constrained (S-LOCO) codes, $q$ -ary asymmetric LOCO (QA-LOCO) codes, and a class of two-dimensional LOCO (TD-LOCO) codes. These families of codes achieve capacity with simple encoding and decoding, and they are easy to reconfigure. We demonstrated that these codes can contribute to notable density and lifetime gains in magnetic recording (MR) and Flash systems, and they find application in other systems too. In this paper, we generalize our work on LOCO codes by presenting a systematic method that guides the code designer to build any constrained code based on lexicographic indexing once the finite set of data patterns to forbid is known. In particular, we connect the set of forbidden patterns directly to the cardinality of the LOCO code and most importantly to the rule that uncovers the index associated with a LOCO codeword. By doing that, we reveal the secret arithmetic of patterns, and make the design of such constrained codes significantly easier. We give examples illustrating the method via codes based on lexicographic indexing from the literature. We then design optimal (rate-wise) constrained codes for the new two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) technology. Over a practical TDMR model, we show notable performance gains as a result of solely applying the new codes. Moreover, we show how near-optimal constrained codes for TDMR can be designed and used to further reduce complexity and error propagation. Previous works on age of information and erasure channels have dealt with specific models and computed the average age or average peak age for certain settings. In this paper, given a source that produces a letter every $T_{s}$ seconds and an erasure channel that can be used every $T_{c}$ seconds, we ask what is the coding strategy that minimizes the time-average “age of information” that an observer of the channel output incurs. We first analyze the case where the source alphabet and the channel-input alphabet have the same size. We show that a trivial coding strategy is optimal and a closed form expression for the age can be derived. We then analyze the case where the alphabets have different sizes. We use a random coding argument to bound the average age and show that the average age achieved using random codes converges to the optimal average age of linear block codes as the source alphabet becomes large. Maximum distance separable (MDS) codes are very important in both theory and practice. There is a classical construction of a family of $[{2^{m}+1, 2u-1, 2^{m}-2u+3}]$ MDS codes for $1 \leq u \leq 2^{m-1}$ , which are cyclic, reversible and BCH codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(2^{m})$. The objective of this paper is to study the quaternary subfield subcodes and quaternary subfield codes of a subfamily of the MDS codes for even $m$. A family of quaternary cyclic codes is obtained. These quaternary codes are distance-optimal in some cases and very good in general. Furthermore, two infinite families of 3-designs from these quaternary codes and their duals are presented. In this paper we prove several coordinate-ordering-free upper bounds on the insdel distances of linear codes. Our bounds are stronger than some previous known bounds. We apply these upper bounds to AGFC codes from some cyclic codes and one algebraic-geometric code with any rearrangement of coordinate positions. In this paper, we construct four families of linear codes over finite fields from the complements of either the union of subfields or the union of cosets of a subfield, which can produce infinite families of optimal linear codes, including infinite families of (near) Griesmer codes. We also characterize the optimality of these four families of linear codes with an explicit computable criterion using the Griesmer bound and obtain many distance-optimal linear codes. In addition, by a more in-depth discussion on some special cases of these four families of linear codes, we obtain several classes of (distance-)optimal linear codes with few weights and completely determine their weight distributions. In this paper, we present two new families of APN functions. The first family is in bivariate form $\big (x^{3}+xy^{2}+ y^{3}+xy, x^{5}+x^{4}y+y^{5}+xy+x^{2}y^{2} \big)\,\,\vphantom {_{\int _{\int }}}$ over ${\mathbb F}_{2^{m}}^{2}$. It is obtained by adding certain terms of the form $\sum _{i}(a_{i}x^{2^{i}}y^{2^{i}},b_{i}x^{2^{i}}y^{2^{i}})$ to a family of APN functions recently proposed by Gölo&gcaron;lu. The $\vphantom {_{\int _{\int }}}$ second family has the form $L(z)^{2^{m}+1}+vz^{2^{m}+1}$ over ${\mathbb F}_{{2^{3m}}}$ , which generalizes a family of APN functions by Bracken et al. from 2011. By calculating the $\Gamma $ -rank of the constructed APN functions over ${\mathbb F}_{2^{8}}$ and ${\mathbb F}_{2^{9}}$ , we demonstrate that the two families are CCZ-inequivalent to all known families. In addition, the two new families cover two known sporadic APN instances over ${\mathbb F}_{2^{8}}$ and ${\mathbb F}_{2^{9}}$ , which were found by Edel and Pott in 2009 and by Beierle and Leander in 2021, respectively. Combinatorial designs are closely related to linear codes. Recently, some near MDS codes were employed to construct $t$ -designs by Ding and Tang, which settles the question as to whether there exists an infinite family of near MDS codes holding an infinite family of $t$ -designs for $t \geq 2$. This paper is devoted to the construction of infinite families of 3-designs and 2-designs from special equations over finite fields. First, we present an infinite family of almost MDS codes over ${\mathrm{ GF}}(p^{m})$ holding an infinite family of 3-designs. We then provide an infinite family of almost MDS codes over ${\mathrm{ GF}}(p^{m})$ holding an infinite family of 2-designs for any field ${\mathrm{ GF}}(q)$. In particular, some of these almost MDS codes are near MDS. Second, we present an infinite family of near MDS codes over ${\mathrm{ GF}}(2^{m})$ holding an infinite family of 3-designs by considering the number of roots of a special linearized polynomial. Linear codes over $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ of length $n$ are subgroups of $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}^{n}$. These codes are also called $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -additive codes and can be seen as a generalization of linear codes over $\mathbb {Z}_{2}$ and $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$. A $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -linear code is a code over $\mathbb {Z}_{p}$ , not necessarily linear, which is the generalized Gray map image of a $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -additive code. In 2015, a systematic encoding was found for $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$ -linear codes. Moreover, an alternative permutation decoding method, which is suitable for any binary code (not necessarily linear) with a systematic encoding, was established. In this paper, we generalize these results by presenting a systematic encoding for any $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -linear code with $s\geq 2$ and $p$ prime. We also describe a permutation decoding method for any systematic code over $\mathbb {Z}_{p}$ , not necessarily linear, and show some examples of how to use this systematic encoding in this decoding method. In this paper, we mainly study quaternary linear codes and their binary subfield codes. First we obtain a general explicit relationship between quaternary linear codes and their binary subfield codes in terms of generator matrices and defining sets. Second, we construct quaternary linear codes via simplicial complexes and determine the weight distributions of these codes. Third, the weight distributions of the binary subfield codes of these quaternary codes are also computed by employing the general characterization. Furthermore, we present two infinite families of optimal linear codes with respect to the Griesmer Bound, and a class of binary almost optimal codes with respect to the Sphere Packing Bound. Minimal linear codes have significant applications in secret sharing schemes and secure two-party computation. When they are defined over finite fields, those codes have been intensively studied, especially in recent years, but they have been firstly partially characterized by Ashikhmin and Barg since 1998. Next, they were completely characterized in 2018 by Ding, Heng, and Zhou in terms of the minimum and maximum nonzero weights in the corresponding codes. Since then, many construction methods for minimal linear codes over finite fields throughout algebraic and geometric approaches have been proposed in the literature. In particular, the algebraic approach gives rise to minimal codes from (cryptographic) functions. Linear codes over finite fields have been expanded into the collection of acceptable alphabets for codes and study codes over finite commutative rings. A natural way to extend the known results available in the literature is to consider minimal linear codes over commutative rings with unity. In extending coding theory to codes over rings, several essential principles must be considered. Particularly extending the minimality property from finite fields to rings and creating such codes is not simple. Such an extension offers more flexibility in the construction of minimal codes. The present article investigates one-dimensional minimal linear codes over the rings $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{n}}$ (where $p$ is a prime) and $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{m}q^{n}}$ (where $p < q$ are distinct primes and $m\leq n$). Our ultimate objective is to characterize such codes’ minimality and design minimal linear codes over the considered rings. Given our objective, we first introduced the notion of minimal codes over (commutative) rings and succeeded in deriving simple characterization of one-dimensional minimal linear codes over the underlying rings mentioned above. Our new algebraic approach allows designing new minimal linear codes. Almost minimal codes over rings are also presented. To the best of our knowledge, the present paper offers a wide variety of minimal codes over (commutative) rings for the first time. Coded computation techniques provide robustness against straggling workers in distributed computing. However, most of the existing schemes require exact provisioning of the straggling behavior and ignore the computations carried out by straggling workers. Moreover, these schemes are typically designed to recover the desired computation results accurately, while in many machine learning and iterative optimization algorithms, faster approximate solutions are known to result in an improvement in the overall convergence time. In this paper, we first introduce a novel coded matrix-vector multiplication scheme, called coded computation with partial recovery (CCPR), which benefits from the advantages of both coded and uncoded computation schemes, and reduces both the computation time and the decoding complexity by allowing a trade-off between the accuracy and the speed of computation. We then extend this approach to distributed implementation of more general computation tasks by proposing a coded communication scheme with partial recovery, where the results of subtasks computed by the workers are coded before being communicated. Numerical simulations on a large linear regression task confirm the benefits of the proposed scheme in terms of the trade-off between the computation accuracy and latency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a special subclass of cyclic codes, BCH codes have wide applications in communication and storage systems. A BCH code of length $n$ over $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ is always relative to an $n$ -th primitive root of unity $\beta $ in an extension field of $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ , and is called a dually-BCH code if its dual is also a BCH code relative to the same $\beta $. The question as to whether a BCH code is a dually-BCH code is in general very hard to answer. In this paper, an answer to this question for primitive narrow-sense BCH codes and projective narrow-sense ternary BCH codes is given. Sufficient and necessary conditions in terms of the designed distances $\delta $ will be presented to ensure that these BCH codes are dually-BCH codes. In addition, the parameters of the primitive narrow-sense BCH codes and their dual codes are investigated. Some lower bounds on minimum distances of the dual codes of primitive and projective narrow-sense BCH codes are developed. Especially for binary primitive narrow-sense BCH codes, the new bounds on the minimum distances of the dual codes improve the classical Sidel’nikov bound, and are also better than the Carlitz and Uchiyama bound for large designed distances $\delta $. Minimal linear codes are in one-to-one correspondence with special types of blocking sets of projective spaces over a finite field, which are called strong or cutting blocking sets. Minimal linear codes have been studied since decades but their tight connection with cutting blocking sets of finite projective spaces was unfolded only in the past few years, and it has not been fully exploited yet. In this paper we apply finite geometric and probabilistic arguments to contribute to the field of minimal codes. We prove an upper bound on the minimal length of minimal codes of dimension $k$ over the $q$ -element Galois field which is linear in both $q$ and $k$ , hence improve the previous superlinear bounds. This result determines the minimal length up to a small constant factor. We also improve the lower and upper bounds on the size of so called higgledy-piggledy line sets in projective spaces and apply these results to present improved bounds on the size of covering codes and saturating sets in projective spaces as well. Let $q=p^{e}$ be a prime power and $\ell $ be an integer with $0\leq \ell \leq e-1$. The $\ell $ -Galois hull of classical linear codes is a generalization of the Euclidean hull and Hermitian hull. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition under which a codeword of a GRS code or an extended GRS code belongs to its $\ell $ -Galois dual code, generalizing both the Euclidean case and Hermitian case in the literature. By using four different tools: 1) the norm mapping from $\mathbb {F}_{q}^{\ast }$ to $\mathbb {F}_{p^{\ell }}^{\ast }$ ; 2) the direct product of two cyclic subgroups; 3) the coset decomposition of a cyclic group; 4) an additive subgroup of $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ and its cosets, we construct eleven families of $q$ -ary MDS codes with $\ell $ -Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions, and give the related eleven families of $[[n,k,d;c]]_{q}$ entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECCs) with relatively large minimum distance in the sense that $2d=n-k+2+c$. We show that developing the theory on $\ell $ -Galois hulls of $q$ -ary MDS codes in this paper enables us to obtain new $q$ -ary EAQECCs with different kinds of length sets via different $\ell $ , where $2\ell \mid e$. This paper considers “ $\delta $ -almost Reed–Muller codes”, i.e., linear codes spanned by evaluations of all but a $\delta $ fraction of monomials of degree at most $d$. It is shown that for any $\delta > 0$ and any $\varepsilon >0$ , there exists a family of $\delta $ -almost Reed–Muller codes of constant rate that correct $1/2- \varepsilon $ fraction of random errors with high probability. For exact Reed–Muller codes, the analogous result is not known and represents a weaker version of the longstanding conjecture that Reed–Muller codes achieve capacity for random errors (Abbe-Shpilka-Wigderson STOC ’15). Our proof is based on the recent polarization result for Reed–Muller codes, combined with a combinatorial approach to establishing inequalities between the Reed–Muller code entropies. A large class of MDS linear codes is constructed. These codes are endowed with an efficient decoding algorithm. Both the definition of the codes and the design of their decoding algorithm only require from Linear Algebra methods, making them fully accessible for everyone. Thus, the first part of the paper develops a direct presentation of the codes by means of parity-check matrices, and the decoding algorithm rests upon matrix and linear maps manipulations. The somewhat more sophisticated mathematical context (non-commutative rings) needed for the proof of the correctness of the decoding algorithm is postponed to the second part. A Goppa code over $\Bbb F_{q^{m}}$ is a well-known subclass of algebraic error-correcting code. If $m=1$ , then it is a generalized Reed-Solomon(GRS) code and its dual code is called a GRS code via a Goppa code. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that the dual codes of GRS codes via (expurgated) Goppa codes are also GRS codes via Goppa codes. Under the above condition, we show that the hulls of GRS codes via Goppa codes are still GRS codes via Goppa codes. As an application, we characterize LCD GRS codes and self-dual GRS codes under the above condition. Some numerical examples are also presented to illustrate our main results. A linear error correcting code is a subspace of a finite-dimensional space over a finite field with a fixed coordinate system. Such a code is said to be locally recoverable with locality r if, for every coordinate, its value at a codeword can be deduced from the value of (certain) r other coordinates of the codeword. These codes have found many recent applications, e.g., to distributed cloud storage. We will discuss the problem of constructing good locally recoverable codes and present some constructions using algebraic surfaces that improve previous constructions and sometimes provide codes that are optimal in a precise sense. The main conceptual contribution of this paper is to consider surfaces fibered over a curve in such a way that each recovery set is constructed from points in a single fiber. This allows us to use the geometry of the fiber to guarantee the local recoverability and use the global geometry of the surface to get a hold on the standard parameters of our codes. Bazzi and Mitter showed that binary dihedral group codes are asymptotically good. In this paper we prove that the dihedral group codes over any finite field with strong duality property are asymptotically good. If the characteristic of the field is even, self-dual dihedral group codes are asymptotically good. The parameters of a q-ary MDS Euclidean self-dual codes are completely determined by its length and the construction of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes with new length has been widely investigated in recent years. In this paper, we give a further study on the construction of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes via generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and their extended codes. The main idea of our construction is to choose suitable evaluation points such that the corresponding (extended) GRS codes are Euclidean self-dual. Firstly, we consider the evaluation set consists of two disjoint subsets, one of which is based on the trace function, the other one is a union of a subspace and its cosets. Then four new families of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes are constructed. Secondly, we give a simple but useful lemma to ensure that the symmetric difference of two intersecting subsets of finite fields can be taken as the desired evaluation set. Based on this lemma, we generalize our first construction and provide two new families of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes. Finally, by using two multiplicative subgroups and their cosets which have nonempty intersection, we present three generic constructions of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes with flexible parameters.
