Tang and Ding [IEEE IT 67 (2021) 244-254] studied the class of BCH codes $\mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ and their dual codes with $q=2^{m}$ and established that the codewords of the minimum (or the second minimum) weight in these codes support 4-designs or 3-designs. Motivated by this, we further investigate the codewords of the next adjacent weight in such codes and discover more infinite classes of $t$ -designs with $t=3,4$. In particular, we prove that codewords of weight 7 in $\mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ support 4-designs for odd $m \geqslant 5$ and they support 3-designs for even $m \geqslant 4$ , which provide infinite classes of simple $t$ -designs with new parameters. Another significant class of $t$ -designs we produce in this paper has complementary designs with parameters 4- $(2^{2s+1}+ 1,5,5)$ ; these designs have the smallest index among all the known simple 4- $(q+1,5,\lambda)$ designs derived from codes for prime powers $q$ ; and they are further proved to be isomorphic to the 4-designs admitting the projective general linear group PGL $(2,2^{2s+1})$ as the automorphism group constructed by Alltop in 1969. Linear codes generated by component functions of perfect nonlinear (PN for short) and almost perfect nonlinear (APN for short) functions and the first-order Reed-Muller codes have been an object of intensive study in coding theory. The objective of this paper is to investigate some binary shortened codes of two families of linear codes from APN functions and some $p$ -ary shortened codes associated with PN functions. The weight distributions of these shortened codes and the parameters of their duals are determined. The parameters of these binary codes and $p$ -ary codes are flexible. Many of the codes presented in this paper are optimal or almost optimal. The results of this paper show that the shortening technique is very promising for constructing good codes. It is well-known that cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In recent years, antiprimitive BCH codes have attracted a lot of attention. The objective of this paper is to study BCH codes of this type over finite fields and analyse their parameters. Some lower bounds on the minimum distance of antiprimitive BCH codes are given. The BCH codes presented in this paper have good parameters in general, containing many optimal linear codes. The binary quadratic-residue codes and the punctured Reed-Muller codes ${\mathcal {R}}_{2}((m-1)/2, m))$ are two families of binary cyclic codes with parameters $[n, (n+1)/2, d \geq \sqrt {n}]$. These two families of binary cyclic codes are interesting partly due to the fact that their minimum distances have a square-root bound. The objective of this paper is to construct two families of binary cyclic codes of length $2^{m}-1$ and dimension near $2^{m-1}$ with good minimum distances. When $m \geq 3$ is odd, the codes become a family of duadic codes with parameters $[2^{m}-1, 2^{m-1}, d]$ , where $d \geq 2^{(m-1)/2}+1$ if $m \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$ and $d \geq 2^{(m-1)/2}+3$ if $m \equiv 1 \pmod {4}$. Maximum distance separable (MDS) codes are very important in both theory and practice. There is a classical construction of a family of $[{2^{m}+1, 2u-1, 2^{m}-2u+3}]$ MDS codes for $1 \leq u \leq 2^{m-1}$ , which are cyclic, reversible and BCH codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(2^{m})$. The objective of this paper is to study the quaternary subfield subcodes and quaternary subfield codes of a subfamily of the MDS codes for even $m$. A family of quaternary cyclic codes is obtained. These quaternary codes are distance-optimal in some cases and very good in general. Furthermore, two infinite families of 3-designs from these quaternary codes and their duals are presented. Let $n$ be a positive integer and $p$ a prime. The power mapping $x^{p^{n}-3}$ over ${\mathbb {F}}_{p^{n}}$ has desirable differential properties, and its differential spectra for $p=2,\,3$ have been determined. In this paper, for any odd prime $p$ , by investigating certain quadratic character sums and some equations over ${\mathbb {F}}_{p^{n}}$ , we determine the differential spectrum of $x^{p^{n}-3}$ with a unified approach. The obtained result shows that for any given odd prime $p$ , the differential spectrum can be expressed explicitly in terms of $n$. Compared with previous results, a special elliptic curve over ${\mathbb {F}}_{p}$ plays an important role in our computation for the general case $p \ge 5$. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we present a new construction of evaluation codes in the Hamming metric, which we call twisted Reed–Solomon codes. Whereas Reed–Solomon (RS) codes are MDS codes, this need not be the case for twisted RS codes. Nonetheless, we show that our construction yields several families of MDS codes. Further, for a large subclass of (MDS) twisted RS codes, we show that the new codes are not generalized RS codes. To achieve this, we use properties of Schur squares of codes as well as an explicit description of the dual of a large subclass of our codes. In frequency hopping (FH) communication systems, frequency hopping sequences (FHSs) are crucial in determining the system’s anti-jamming performance. If FHSs can ensure a wide-gap between two adjacent frequency points to avoid the frequency points with high interference probability, it will significantly improve the FH communication system’s anti-interference ability. Moreover, if each frequency point appears at the same number of times in a sequence period, the system’s anti-electromagnetic interference will be enhanced. Therefore, it is desirable to employ FHSs with low Hamming autocorrelation, wide frequency-hopping gap, and good uniformity in practical applications. However, to the best of our knowledge, no such infinite classes of FHSs have been reported in the literature to date. This paper aims to present two constructions of uniform wide-gap frequency-hopping sequences (WGFHSs) by concatenating two or three adequately designed sequences. This paper considers “ $\delta $ -almost Reed–Muller codes”, i.e., linear codes spanned by evaluations of all but a $\delta $ fraction of monomials of degree at most $d$. It is shown that for any $\delta > 0$ and any $\varepsilon >0$ , there exists a family of $\delta $ -almost Reed–Muller codes of constant rate that correct $1/2- \varepsilon $ fraction of random errors with high probability. For exact Reed–Muller codes, the analogous result is not known and represents a weaker version of the longstanding conjecture that Reed–Muller codes achieve capacity for random errors (Abbe-Shpilka-Wigderson STOC ’15). Our proof is based on the recent polarization result for Reed–Muller codes, combined with a combinatorial approach to establishing inequalities between the Reed–Muller code entropies. The expansion complexity is a new figure of merit for cryptographic sequences. In this paper, we present an explicit formula of the (irreducible) expansion complexity of ultimately periodic sequences over finite fields. We also provide improved upper and lower bounds on the $N$ th irreducible expansion complexity when they are not explicitly determined. In addition, for some infinite sequences with given nonlinear complexity, a tighter upper bound of their $N$ th expansion complexity is given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2016, Chang et al. proposed a Format Preserving Encryption (FPE) scheme over a finite field and used an MDS matrix in the diffusion layer of the scheme for optimal diffusion. Later that year, Gupta et al. defined an algebraic structure named Format Preserving Set (FPS) is the diffusion layer of an FPE scheme. In 2018, Barua et al. showed that it is not possible to construct an FPS over a finite field in the diffusion layer of an FPE scheme if the cardinality of the set is not a power of prime. They extended the search of FPS over a finite commutative ring $\mathcal {R}$ and showed that if an FPS $S \subseteq \mathcal {R}$ is closed under addition then it gets module structure over some subring of $\mathcal {R}$. Moreover, in this case, the only possible cardinalities of FPS are some power of the cardinalities of subrings when the module is free. The purpose of this article is twofold. Firstly, we show that it is possible to construct format preserving sets over a finite commutative ring which are not closed under addition. Secondly, we search for format preserving sets and MDS matrices over torsion modules. We provide examples of format preserving sets of cardinalities 26 and 52 over torsion modules and rings. These cardinalities are interesting because they correspond to the set of English alphabets, without and with capitalization. By considering a finite Abelian group as a torsion module over a PID, we show that a matrix $M$ with entries from the PID is MDS if and only if $M$ is MDS under the projection map on the same Abelian group. We study codes with parameters of $q$ -ary shortened Hamming codes, i.e., $(n=(q^{m}-q)/(q-1), q^{n-m}, 3)_{q}$. Firstly, we prove the fact mentioned in 1998 by Brouwer et al. that such codes are optimal, generalizing it to a bound for multifold packings of radius-1 balls, with a corollary for multiple coverings. In particular, we show that the punctured Hamming code is an optimal $q$ -fold packing with minimum distance 2. Secondly, for every admissible length starting from $n=20$ , we show the existence of 4-ary codes with parameters of shortened 1-perfect codes that cannot be obtained by shortening a 1-perfect code. Let $n=2m$. In 2020, Budaghyan, Helleseth and Kaleyski [IEEE TIT 66(11): 7081-7087, 2020] considered a family of quadrinomials over $\mathbb {F}_{2^{n}}$ of the form $x^{3}+a(x^{2^{s}+1})^{2^{k}}+bx^{3\cdot 2^{m}}+c(x^{2^{s+m}+2^{m}})^{2^{k}}$. They showed that two infinite classes of almost perfect nonlinear (APN) functions belong to this family when $\gcd (6,m)=1$. We observe that these two infinite classes of APN quadrinomials and the infinite class of APN polynomials from the Budaghyan-Carlet family belong to a more general family of polynomials over $\mathbb {F}_{2^{n}} $ with the form $f(x)=a{\mathrm{ Tr}}^{n}_{m}(F(x))+a^{2^{m}}{\mathrm{ Tr}}^{n}_{m}(G(x))$ , where $a \in \mathbb {F}_{2^{n}}\backslash \mathbb {F}_{2^{m}} $ , and both $F$ and $G$ are quadratic functions over $\mathbb {F}_{2^{n}}$. We characterize when $f(x) $ is APN. With the help of our characterization, letting $F(x)=bx^{2^{i}+1} $ and $G(x)=cx^{2^{s}+1}$ with $b, c\in \mathbb {F}_{2^{n}} $ , we obtain an infinite family of APN functions of the form $f(x) $ when ${\mathrm{ gcd}}(2,m)=1 $ and verify that for $n=10 $ two APN instances from this infinite family are CCZ-inequivalent to each other, and to any APN function over $\mathbb {F}_{2^{10}} $ from the previously known infinite families. We prove that the covering radius of the Melas code $M(m,q)$ of length $n=q^{m}-1$ over $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ is 2 if $q > 3$. List-decodability of Reed–Solomon codes has received a lot of attention, but the best-possible dependence between the parameters is still not well-understood. In this work, we focus on the case where the list-decoding radius is of the form $r=1-\varepsilon $ for $\varepsilon $ tending to zero. Our main result states that there exist Reed–Solomon codes with rate $\Omega (\varepsilon)$ which are $(1-\varepsilon, O(1/\varepsilon))$ -list-decodable, meaning that any Hamming ball of radius $1-\varepsilon $ contains at most $O(1/\varepsilon)$ codewords. This trade-off between rate and list-decoding radius is best-possible for any code with list size less than exponential in the block length. By achieving this trade-off between rate and list-decoding radius we improve a recent result of Guo, Li, Shangguan, Tamo, and Wootters, and resolve the main motivating question of their work. Moreover, while their result requires the field to be exponentially large in the block length, we only need the field size to be polynomially large (and in fact, almost-linear suffices). Sequences with low aperiodic autocorrelation and crosscorrelation are used in communications and remote sensing. Golay and Shapiro independently devised a recursive construction that produces families of complementary pairs of binary sequences. In the simplest case, the construction produces the Rudin–Shapiro sequences, and in general it produces what we call Golay–Rudin–Shapiro sequences. Calculations by Littlewood show that the Rudin–Shapiro sequences have low mean square autocorrelation. A sequence’s peak sidelobe level is its largest magnitude of autocorrelation over all nonzero shifts. Høholdt, Jensen, and Justesen showed that there is some undetermined positive constant $A$ such that the peak sidelobe level of a Rudin–Shapiro sequence of length $2^{n}$ is bounded above by $A(1.842626\ldots)^{n}$ , where $1.842626\ldots $ is the positive real root of $X^{4}-3 X-6$. We show that the peak sidelobe level is bounded above by $5(1.658967\ldots)^{n-4}$ , where $1.658967\ldots $ is the real root of $X^{3}+X^{2}-2 X-4$. Any exponential bound with lower base will fail to be true for almost all $n$ , and any bound with the same base but a lower constant prefactor will fail to be true for at least one $n$. We provide a similar bound on the peak crosscorrelation (largest magnitude of crosscorrelation over all shifts) between the sequences in each Rudin–Shapiro pair. The methods that we use generalize to all families of complementary pairs produced by the Golay–Rudin–Shapiro recursion, for which we obtain bounds on the peak sidelobe level and peak crosscorrelation with the same exponential growth rate as we obtain for the original Rudin–Shapiro sequences.
