Constacyclic codes which generalize the classical cyclic codes have played important roles in recent constructions of many new quantum maximum distance separable (MDS) codes. However, the mathematical mechanism may not have been fully understood. In this paper, we use pseudo-cyclic codes, which is a further generalization of constacyclic codes, to construct the quantum MDS codes. The relevance in a sampling theory of U -invariant subspaces of a Hilbert space \mathcal {H} , where U denotes a unitary operator on \mathcal H , is nowadays a recognized fact. Indeed, shift-invariant subspaces of L^2(\mathbb R) become a particular example; periodic extensions of finite signals also provide a remarkable example. As a consequence, the availability of an abstract $U$ -sampling theory becomes a useful tool to handle these problems. In this paper, we derive a sampling theory for finite dimensional multiple generated $U$ -invariant subspaces of a Hilbert space \mathcal {H} . As the involved samples are identified as frame coefficients in a suitable euclidean space, the relevant mathematical technique is that of the finite frame theory. In this paper, locally repairable codes with all-symbol locality are studied. Methods to modify already existing codes are presented. It is also shown that, with high probability, a random matrix with a few extra columns guaranteeing the locality property is a generator matrix for a locally repairable code with a good minimum distance. The proof of the result provides a constructive method to find locally repairable codes. Interference networks with no channel state information at the transmitter except for the knowledge of the connectivity graph have been recently studied under the topological interference management framework. In this paper, we consider a similar problem with topological knowledge but in a distributed broadcast channel setting, i.e., a network where transmitter cooperation is enabled. We show that the topological information can also be exploited in this case to strictly improve the degrees of freedom (DoF) as long as the network is not fully connected, which is a reasonable assumption in practice. Achievability schemes from graph theoretic and interference alignment perspectives are proposed. Together with outer bounds built upon generator sequence, the concept of compound channel settings, and the relation to index coding, we characterize the symmetric DoF for the so-called regular networks with constant number of interfering links, and identify the sufficient and/or necessary conditions for the arbitrary network topologies to achieve a certain amount of symmetric DoF. Recently, symbol-pair codes are proposed to protect against pair errors in symbol-pair read channels. One main task in symbol-pair coding theory is to design codes with large minimum pair distance. Maximum distance separable (MDS) symbol-pair codes are optimal in the sense they attain maximal minimum pair distance. In this paper, based on constacyclic codes, we construct some new MDS symbol-pair codes with minimum pair-distance five and six. Quantum maximum-distance-separable (MDS) codes form an important family of quantum codes. In this paper, using Hermitian construction and classical constacyclic codes, we construct six classes of quantum MDS codes. Two of these six classes of quantum MDS codes have larger minimum distance than the ones available in the literature. BCH codes are an interesting type of cyclic codes and have wide applications in communication and storage systems. Generally, it is very hard to determine the minimum distances of BCH codes. In this paper, we determine the weight distributions of two classes of primitive BCH codes $\mathcal C_{(q, m, \delta _{2})}$ and $\mathcal C_{(q, m, \delta _{3})}$ and their extended codes, which solve two problems proposed by Ding et al. It is shown that the extended codes $\overline {\mathcal C}_{(q, m, \delta _{2})}$ have four nonzero weights. We also employ the Hartmann-Tzeng bound to present the minimum distance of the dual code $\mathcal C_{(q, m, \delta _{2})}^\perp $ for $q \ge 5$. Inspired by the idea, we then determine the dimensions of a class of cyclic codes and give lower bounds on their minimum distances, which is greatly improved comparing with the BCH bound. A ${\mathbb {Z}}_{2}{\mathbb {Z}}_{4}$ -additive code ${\mathcal{ C}}\subseteq {\mathbb {Z}}_{2}^\alpha \times {\mathbb {Z}}_{4}^\beta $ is called cyclic if the set of coordinates can be partitioned into two subsets, the set of ${\mathbb {Z}}_{2}$ coordinates and the set of ${\mathbb {Z}}_{4}$ coordinates, such that any cyclic shift of the coordinates of both subsets leaves the code invariant. Let $\Phi ({\mathcal{ C}})$ be the binary Gray map image of ${\mathcal{ C}}$. We study the rank and the dimension of the kernel of a ${\mathbb {Z}}_{2} {\mathbb {Z}}_{4} $ -additive cyclic code ${\mathcal{ C}}$ , that is, the dimensions of the binary linear codes $\langle \Phi ({\mathcal{ C}}) \rangle $ and $\ker (\Phi ({\mathcal{ C}}))$. We give upper and lower bounds for these parameters. It is known that the codes $\langle \Phi ({\mathcal{ C}}) \rangle $ and $\ker (\Phi ({\mathcal{ C}}))$ are binary images of ${\mathbb {Z}}_{2} {\mathbb {Z}}_{4}$ -additive codes that we denote by ${\mathcal{ R}}({\mathcal{ C}})$ and ${\mathcal{ K}}({\mathcal{ C}})$ , respectively. We introduce a new class of evaluation linear codes by evaluating polynomials at the roots of a suitable trace function. We give conditions for self-orthogonality of these codes and their subfield-subcodes with respect to the Hermitian inner product. They allow us to construct stabilizer quantum codes over several finite fields which substantially improve the codes in the literature. We study the problem of constructing balanced generator matrices for Reed–Solomon and Tamo–Barg codes. More specifically, we are interested in realizing generator matrices, for the full-length cyclic versions of these codes, where all rows have the same weight and the difference in weight between any columns is at most one. The results presented in this paper translate to computationally balanced encoding schemes, which can be appealing in distributed storage applications. Indeed, the balancedness of these generator matrices guarantees that the computation effort exerted by any storage node is essentially the same. In general, the framework presented can accommodate various values for the required row weight. We emphasize the possibility of constructing sparsest and balanced generator matrices for Reed–Solomon codes, i.e., each row is a minimum distance codeword. The number of storage nodes contacted once a message symbol is updated decreases with the row weight, so sparse constructions are appealing in that context. Results of similar flavor are presented for cyclic Tamo–Barg codes. In particular, we show that for a code with minimum distance $d$ and locality $r$ , a construction in which every row is of weight $d + r - 1$ is possible. The constructions presented are deterministic and operate over the codes’ original underlying finite field. Quadratic residue codes are a well-known class of codes. In this paper, we consider the constructions of self-dual codes by higher power residues, especially fourth power residues. New infinite families of self-dual codes over GF(2), GF(3), GF(4), GF(8), and GF(9) are introduced. Some of them have better minimum weight than previously known codes. This paper provides new constructions and lower bounds for subspace codes, using Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes from matchings of the complete graph and pending blocks. We present different constructions for constant dimension codes with minimum injection distance 2 or $k-1$ , where $k$ is the constant dimension. Furthermore, we present a construction of new codes from old codes for any minimum distance. Then, we construct nonconstant dimension codes from these codes. Random network coding recently attracts attention as a technique to disseminate information in a network. This paper considers a noncoherent multishot network, where the unknown and time-variant network is used several times. In order to create dependence between the different shots, particular convolutional codes in rank metric are used. These codes are so-called (partial) unit memory ((P)UM) codes, i.e., convolutional codes with memory one. First, distance measures for convolutional codes in rank metric are shown and two constructions of (P)UM codes in rank metric based on the generator matrices of maximum rank distance codes are presented. Second, an efficient error-erasure decoding algorithm for these codes is presented. Its guaranteed decoding radius is derived and its complexity is bounded. Encoding and indexing of lattice codes is generalized from self-similar lattice codes to a broader class of lattices. If coding lattice $\Lambda_{\mathrm c}$ and shaping lattice $\Lambda_{\mathrm s}$ satisfy $\Lambda _{\mathrm s}\subseteq \Lambda _{\mathrm c}$ , then $\Lambda _{\mathrm c}/ \Lambda _{\mathrm s}$ is a quotient group that can be used to form a (nested) lattice code $\mathcal C$. Conway and Sloane’s method of encoding and indexing does not apply when the lattices are not self-similar. Results are provided for two classes of lattices. 1) If $\Lambda _{\mathrm c}$ and $\Lambda _{\mathrm s}$ both have generator matrices in a triangular form that satisfies $\Lambda _{\mathrm s}\subseteq \Lambda _{\mathrm c}$ , then encoding is always possible. 2) When $\Lambda _{\mathrm c}$ and $\Lambda _{\mathrm s}$ are described by full generator matrices, if a solution to a linear diophantine equation exists, then encoding is possible. In addition, special cases where $\mathcal C$ is a cyclic code are considered. A condition for the existence of a group isomorphism between the information and $\mathcal C$ is given. The results are applicable to a variety of coding lattices, including Construction A, Construction D, and low-density lattice codes. A variety of shaping lattices may be used as well, including convolutional code lattices and the direct sum of important lattices such as $D_{4}$ , $E_{8}$ , etc. Thus, a lattice code $\mathcal C$ can be designed by selecting $\Lambda _{\mathrm c}$ and $\Lambda _{\mathrm s}$ separately, avoiding the competing design requirements of self-similar lattice codes. Quantum synchronizable error-correcting codes are special quantum error-correcting codes that are designed to correct both the effect of quantum noise on qubits and misalignment in block synchronization. It is known that, in principle, such a code can be constructed through a combination of a classical linear code and its subcode if the two are both cyclic and dual-containing. However, finding such classical codes that lead to promising quantum synchronizable error-correcting codes is not a trivial task. In fact, although there are two families of classical codes that are proved to produce quantum synchronizable codes with good minimum distances and highest possible tolerance against misalignment, their code lengths have been restricted to primes and Mersenne numbers. In this paper, examining the incidence vectors of projective spaces over the finite fields of characteristic 2, we give quantum synchronizable codes from cyclic codes whose lengths are not primes or Mersenne numbers. These projective geometric codes achieve good performance in quantum error correction and possess the best possible ability to recover synchronization, thereby enriching the variety of good quantum synchronizable codes. We also extend the current knowledge of cyclic codes in classical coding theory by explicitly giving generator polynomials of the finite geometric codes and completely characterizing the minimum weight nonzero codewords. In addition to the codes based on projective spaces, we carry out a similar analysis on the well-known cyclic codes from Euclidean spaces that are known to be majority logic decodable and determine their exact minimum distances. Baranyai’s theorem is well known in the theory of hypergraphs. A corollary of this theorem says that one can partition the family of all \(u\) -subsets of an \(n\) -element set into \({n-1\choose u-1}\) subfamilies such that each subfamily forms a partition of the \(n\) -element set, where \(n\) is divisible by \(u\) . In this paper, we present a coding-theoretic application of Baranyai’s theorem. More precisely, we propose a combinatorial construction of locally decodable codes. Locally decodable codes are error-correcting codes that allow the recovery of any message symbol by looking at only a few symbols of the codeword. The number of looked codeword symbols is called query complexity. Such codes have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. The Walsh–Hadamard code is a well-known binary two-query locally decodable code of exponential length that can recover any message bit using 2 bits of the codeword. Our construction can give locally decodable codes over small finite fields for any constant query complexities. In this paper, we extend the concept of maximum-distance separable (MDS) array codes to a larger class of codes, where the array columns contain a variable number of data and parity symbols and the codewords cannot be arranged, in general, in a regular array structure with equal column length. These new codes, named irregular MDS array codes, find applications in problems of distributed data storage with multiple sources of information generating data at unequal rates. We solve the problem of finding optimal parity symbol allocations that achieve minimum redundancy for a given level of protection against block erasures. We provide a classification of irregular MDS array codes according to the parameters of their parity symbol allocation and we show how regular MDS array codes are a special case of this wider class. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for such irregular array codes to be MDS and extend the concept of the lowest density generator matrix. Network coding can significantly improve the transmission rate of communication networks with packet loss compared with routing. However, using network coding usually incurs high computational and storage costs in the network devices and terminals. For example, some network coding schemes require the computational and/or storage capacities of an intermediate network node to increase linearly with the number of packets for transmission, making such schemes difficult to be implemented in a router-like device that has only constant computational and storage capacities. In this paper, we introduce batched sparse code (BATS code), which enables a digital fountain approach to resolve the above issue. BATS code is a coding scheme that consists of an outer code and inner code. The outer code is a matrix generation of a fountain code. It works with the inner code that comprises random linear coding at the intermediate network nodes. BATS codes preserve such desirable properties of fountain codes as ratelessness and low encoding/decoding complexity. The computational and storage capacities of the intermediate network nodes required for applying BATS codes are independent of the number of packets for transmission. Almost capacity-achieving BATS code schemes are devised for unicast networks and certain multicast networks. Recently, there has been intensive research on the weight distributions of cyclic codes. In this paper, we compute the weight distributions of three classes of cyclic codes with Niho exponents. More specifically, we obtain two classes of binary three-weight and four-weight cyclic codes and a class of nonbinary four-weight cyclic codes. The weight distributions follow from the determination of value distributions of certain exponential sums. One central theme in quantum error-correction is to construct quantum codes that have a large minimum distance. In this paper, we study \BBZ2\BBZ4-additive cyclic codes. These codes are identified as \BBZ4[x]-submodules of the ring Rr,s=\BBZ2[x]/\langle x^{r}-1\rangle\times\BBZ4\left[x\right]/\langle x^{s}-1\rangle. The algebraic structure of this family of codes is studied and a set of generator polynomials for this family as a \BBZ4[x]-submodule of the ring Rr,s is determined. We show that the duals of \BBZ2\BBZ4-additive cyclic codes are also cyclic. We also present an infinite family of Maximum Distance separable with respect to the singleton bound codes. Four quantum code constructions generating several new families of good nonbinary quantum nonprimitive nonnarrow-sense, Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem codes, are presented in this paper. The first two are based on Calderbank–Shor–Steane (CSS) construction derived from two nonprimitive Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem codes. The third one is based on Steane's enlargement of nonbinary CSS codes applied to suitable subfamilies of nonprimitive nonnarrow-sense Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem codes. The fourth construction is derived from suitable subfamilies of Hermitian dual-containing nonprimitive nonnarrow-sense Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem codes. The weight hierarchy of one-point algebraic geometry codes can be estimated by means of the generalized order bounds, which are described in terms of a certain Weierstrass semigroup. The asymptotical behavior of such bounds for r\geq 2 differs from that of the classical Feng–Rao distance (r=1) by the so-called Feng–Rao numbers. This paper is addressed to compute the Feng–Rao numbers for numerical semigroups of embedding dimension two (with two generators), obtaining a closed simple formula for the general case by using numerical semigroup techniques. These involve the computation of the Apéry set with respect to an integer of the semigroups under consideration. The formula obtained is applied to lower bounding the generalized Hamming weights, improving the bound given by Kirfel and Pellikaan in terms of the classical Feng–Rao distance. Perfect space-time block codes (STBCs) are based on four design criteria—full-rateness, nonvanishing determinant, cubic shaping, and uniform average transmitted energy per antenna per time slot. Cubic shaping and transmission at uniform average energy per antenna per time slot are important from the perspective of energy efficiency of STBCs. The shaping criterion demands that the generator matrix of the lattice from which each layer of the perfect STBC is carved be unitary. In this paper, it is shown that unitariness is not a necessary requirement for energy efficiency in the context of space-time coding with finite input constellations, and an alternative criterion is provided that enables one to obtain full-rate (rate of nt complex symbols per channel use for an nt transmit antenna system) STBCs with larger normalized minimum determinants than the perfect STBCs. Further, two such STBCs, one each for 4 and 6 transmit antennas, are presented and they are shown to have larger normalized minimum determinants than the comparable perfect STBCs which hitherto had the best-known normalized minimum determinants. In this paper, we present an analog of the Singleton bound for convolutional codes over finite rings. Codes meeting that bound are called MDS. The projective special linear group ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$ is 2-transitive for all primes $n$ and 3-homogeneous for $n \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$ on the set $\{0,1, \ldots, n-1, \infty \}$. It is known that the extended odd-like quadratic residue codes are invariant under ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. Hence, the extended quadratic residue codes hold an infinite family of 2-designs for primes $n \equiv 1 \pmod {4}$ , an infinite family of 3-designs for primes $n \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$. To construct more $t$ -designs with $t \in \{2, 3\}$ , one would search for other extended cyclic codes over finite fields that are invariant under the action of ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. The objective of this paper is to prove that the extended quadratic residue binary codes are the only nontrivial extended binary cyclic codes that are invariant under ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. Symbol-pair codes introduced by Cassuto and Blaum (2010) are designed to protect against pair errors in symbol-pair read channels. The higher the minimum pair distance, the more pair errors the code can correct. Maximum distance separable (MDS) symbol-pair codes are optimal in the sense that pair distance cannot be improved for given length and code size. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we present three lower bounds for the minimum pair distance of constacyclic codes, the first two of which generalize the previously known results due to Cassuto and Blaum (2011) and Kai et al. (2015). The third one exhibits a lower bound for the minimum pair distance of repeated-root cyclic codes. This paper introduces capacity-achieving polar coding schemes for arbitrarily permuted parallel channels where the component channels are memoryless, binary-input, and output-symmetric. In this paper, we present two generators for the group of symmetries of the generic (m+1)-dimensional periodic Costas arrays over elementary abelian (\BBZp)^{m} groups: one that is defined by multiplication on m dimensions and the other by shear (addition) on m dimensions. Through exhaustive search, we observe that these two generators characterize the group of symmetries for the examples we were able to compute. Following the results, we conjecture that these generators characterize the group of symmetries of the generic (m+1)-dimensional periodic Costas arrays over elementary abelian (\BBZp)^{m} groups. Quantum convolutional coding is a technique for encoding a stream of quantum information before transmitting it over a noisy quantum channel. Two important goals in the design of quantum convolutional encoders are to minimize the memory required by them and to avoid the catastrophic propagation of errors. In a previous paper, we determined minimal-memory, noncatastrophic, polynomial-depth encoders for a few exemplary quantum convolutional codes. In this paper, we elucidate a general technique for finding an encoder of an arbitrary quantum convolutional code such that the encoder possesses these desirable properties. In this paper, we discuss a naive method of randomness reduction for cryptographic schemes, which replaces the required perfect randomness with output distribution of a computationally secure pseudorandom generator (PRG). We propose novel ideas and techniques for evaluating the indistinguishability between the random and pseudorandom cases, even against an adversary with computationally unbounded attack algorithm. Hence, the PRG-based randomness reduction can be effective even for information-theoretically secure cryptographic schemes, especially when the amount of information received by the adversary is small. In comparison to a preceding result of Dubrov and Ishai (STOC 2006), our result removes the requirement of generalized notion of “nb-PRGs” and is effective for more general kinds of protocols. We give some numerical examples to show the effectiveness of our result in practical situations, and we also propose a further idea for improving the effect of the PRG-based randomness reduction. A subgroup permutation code is a set of permutations on n symbols with the property that its elements are closed under the operation of composition. In this paper, we give inapproximability results for the minimum and maximum weight problems of subgroup permutation codes under several well-known metrics. Based on previous works, we prove that under Hamming, Lee, Cayley, Kendall's tau, Ulam's, and \ell p distance metrics, 1) there is no polynomial-time 2^\log ^1-\epsilon n-approximation algorithm for the minimum weight problem for any constant \epsilon >0 unless NP\subseteq DTIME(2^ polylog(n)) (quasi-polynomial time), and 2) there is no polynomial-time r-approximation algorithm for the minimum weight problem for any constant r >1 unless P= NP. Under \ell \infty -metric, we prove that it is NP-hard to approximate the minimum weight problem within factor 2-\epsilon for any constant \epsilon >0. We also prove that for any constant \epsilon >0, it is NP-hard to approximate the maximum weight within ^p \!\!\! \sqrt 3\over 2-\epsilon under \ell p distance metric, and within 3\over 2-\epsilon under Hamming, Lee, Cayley, Kendall's tau, and Ulam's distance metrics. Additive codes over GF(9) that are self-dual with respect to the Hermitian trace inner product have a natural application in quantum information theory, where they correspond to ternary quantum error-correcting codes. However, these codes have so far received far less interest from coding theorists than self-dual additive codes over GF(4), which correspond to binary quantum codes. Self-dual additive codes over GF(9) have been classified up to length 8, and in this paper we extend the complete classification to codes of lengths 9 and 10. The classification is obtained by using a new algorithm that combines two graph representations of self-dual additive codes. The search space is first reduced by the fact that every code can be mapped to a weighted graph, and a different graph is then introduced that transforms the problem of code equivalence into a problem of graph isomorphism. By an extension technique, we are able to classify all optimal codes of lengths 11 and 12. There are 56\,005\,876∼(11,3^11,5) codes and 6493∼(12,3^12,6) codes. Several methods for finding a basis conversion matrix between two different bases in an extension field \BBF p^{m} have been proposed. Among them, the one based on Gauss period normal basis (GNB) is on average the most efficient. However, since it needs to construct a certain tower field \BBF (p^{m)^{n}}, some inefficient cases in which the towering degree n becomes large have been reported. This paper first determines that such inefficient cases are caused by the GNB condition. In order to overcome this inefficiency, we propose a method that does not use any GNB in the target extension field \BBF p^{m}, but instead uses a certain polynomial basis in \BBF p^{m} derived by a certain small cyclic group in \BBF (p^{m)^{n}}. This causes relaxation of the condition for the towering degree n. This paper is concerned with construction and structural analysis of both cyclic and quasi-cyclic codes, particularly low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. It consists of three parts. The first part shows that a cyclic code given by a parity-check matrix in circulant form can be decomposed into descendant cyclic and quasi-cyclic codes of various lengths and rates. Some fundamental structural properties of these descendant codes are developed, including the characterization of the roots of the generator polynomial of a cyclic descendant code. The second part of the paper shows that cyclic and quasi-cyclic descendant LDPC codes can be derived from cyclic finite-geometry LDPC codes using the results developed in the first part of the paper. This enlarges the repertoire of cyclic LDPC codes. The third part of the paper analyzes the trapping set structure of regular LDPC codes whose parity-check matrices satisfy a certain constraint on their rows and columns. Several classes of finite-geometry and finite-field cyclic and quasi-cyclic LDPC codes with large minimum distances are shown to have no harmful trapping sets of size smaller than their minimum distances. In this paper we classify all extremal and s-extremal binary self-dual codes of length 38. There are exactly 2744 extremal [38,19,8] self-dual codes, two s-extremal [38,19,6] codes, and 1730 s-extremal [38,19,8] codes. We obtain our results from the use of a recursive algorithm used in the recent classification of all extremal self-dual codes of length 36, and from a generalization of this recursive algorithm for the shadow. This paper focuses on dualizing tail-biting trellises, particularly KV trellises. These trellises are based on characteristic generators, as introduced by Koetter–Vardy (2003), and may be regarded as a natural generalization of minimal conventional trellises, even though they are not necessarily minimal. Two dualization techniques will be investigated: the local dualization, introduced by Forney (2001) for general normal graphs, and a linear-algebra-based dualization tailored to the specific class of tail-biting Bahl–Cocke–Jelinek–Raviv (BCJR) trellises, introduced by Nori–Shankar (2006). It turns out that, in general, the BCJR dual is a subtrellis of the local dual, while for KV trellises these two coincide. Furthermore, making use of both the BCJR construction and the local dualization, it will be shown that for each complete set of characteristic generators of a code there exists a complete set of characteristic generators of the dual code such that their resulting KV trellises are dual to each other if paired suitably. Let p=ef+1 be an odd prime for some e and f, and let Fp be the finite field with p elements. In this paper, we explicitly describe the trace representations of the binary characteristic sequences (of period p) of all the cyclic difference sets D which are some union of cosets of eth powers He in Fp^{\ast }(\triangleq Fp\backslash \{0\}) for e\leq 12. For this, we define eth power residue sequences of period p, which include all the binary characteristic sequences mentioned above as special cases, and reduce the problem of determining their trace representations to that of determining the values of the generating polynomials of cosets of He in Fp^{\ast } at some primitive pth root of unity, and some properties of these values are investigated. Based on these properties, the trace representation and linear complexity not only of the characteristic sequences of all the known eth residue difference sets, but of all the sixth power residue sequences are determined. This paper investigates the constructions of tail-biting trellises for linear block codes as introduced by Koetter and Vardy (2003) and Nori and Shankar (2006). For a given code, the sets of characteristic generators are defined slightly more generally than by Koetter and Vardy. In particular, they are not uniquely determined by the code. The effect of the choice of characteristic generators on the resulting product trellises, called KV-trellises, is discussed in detail. It is shown that each KV-trellis is a span-based BCJR-trellis and that the latter are always nonmergeable. Finally, a duality conjecture posed by Koetter and Vardy is addressed by making use of a dualization technique of BCJR-trellises. The conjecture is proven for minimal trellises. We consider the Gaussian wiretap channel, where two legitimate players Alice and Bob communicate over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, while Eve is eavesdropping, also through an AWGN channel. We propose a coding strategy based on lattice coset encoding. We define the secrecy gain as a design criterion for wiretap lattice codes, expressed in terms of the lattice theta series, which characterizes Eve’s confusion as a function of the channel parameters. The secrecy gain is studied for even unimodular lattices, and an asymptotic analysis shows that it grows exponentially in the dimension of the lattice. Examples of wiretap lattice codes are given. An efficient isomorph-free generation algorithm for classification of binary self-dual codes with the minimum distance $d = 4$ is presented. It is combined with another isomorph-free generation algorithm for classification of self-dual codes with the minimum distance $d \ge 6$ . Linear encoders with good joint spectra are suitable candidates for optimal lossless joint source-channel coding (JSCC), where the joint spectrum is a variant of the input–output complete weight distribution and is considered good if it is close to the average joint spectrum of all linear encoders (of the same coding rate). In spite of their existence, little is known on how to construct such encoders in practice. This paper is devoted to their construction. In particular, two families of linear encoders are presented and proved to have good joint spectra. The first family is derived from Gabidulin codes, a class of maximum-rank-distance codes. The second family is constructed using a serial concatenation of an encoder of a low-density parity-check code (as outer encoder) with a low-density generator matrix encoder (as inner encoder). In addition, criteria for good linear encoders are defined for three coding applications: 1) lossless source coding; 2) channel coding; and 3) lossless JSCC. In the framework of the code-spectrum approach, these three scenarios correspond to the problems of constructing linear encoders with good kernel spectra, good image spectra, and good joint spectra, respectively. Good joint spectra imply both good kernel spectra and good image spectra, and for every linear encoder having a good kernel (respectively, image) spectrum, it is proved that there exists a linear encoder not only with the same kernel (respectively, image) but also with a good joint spectrum. In this paper, a novel approach of finding disjoint linear codes is presented. The cardinality of a set of [u, m, t+1] disjoint linear codes largely exceeds all the previous best known methods used for the same purpose. Using such sets of disjoint linear codes, not necessarily of the same length, we have been able to provide a construction technique of t-resilient S-boxes F:\BBF2^{n}\mapsto\BBF2^{m} (n even, 1< m\leq\lfloor n/4\rfloor) with strictly almost optimal nonlinearity >2^n-1-2^n/2. This is the first time that the bound 2^n-1-2^n/2 has been exceeded by multiple output resilient functions. Actually, the nonlinearity of our functions is in many cases equal to the best known nonlinearity of balanced Boolean functions. A large class of previously unknown cryptographic resilient S-boxes is obtained, and several improvements of the original approach are proposed. Some other relevant cryptographic properties are also briefly discussed. It is shown that these functions may reach Siegenthaler's bound n-t-1, and can be either of optimal algebraic immunity or of slightly suboptimal algebraic immunity, which was confirmed by simulations. It is shown that each chain of linear codes has an associated demi-matroid, a combinatorial structure that extends the notion of a vector matroid of a linear code. These demi-matroids are proven to determine important properties of the chain, and it is shown that linear code chain duality is represented by demi-matroid duality in a natural and yet surprising way. Profiles are defined for arbitrary demi-matroids and thus for linear code chains, which generalizes previous results in the literature and provides simple and transparent proofs thereof. In this paper, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a function of the form F(x)=Trk^{2k}(\sumi=1^{t}aix^{ri(2^{k}-1)}) to be bent. Three equivalent statements, all of them providing both the necessary and sufficient conditions, are derived. In particular, one characterization provides an interesting link between the bentness and the evaluation of F on the cyclic group of the (2^k+1)th primitive roots of unity in GF(2^2k). More precisely, for this group of cardinality 2^k+1 given by \cal U=\u\in GF(2^2k):u^2^k+1=1\, it is shown that the property of being vectorial bent implies that Im(F)=GF(2^k)\cup\0\, if F is evaluated on \cal U, that is, F(u) takes all possible values of GF(2^k)^\ast exactly once and the zero value is taken twice when u ranges over \cal U. This condition is then reformulated in terms of the evaluation of certain elementary symmetric polynomials related to F, which in turn gives some necessary conditions on the coefficients ai (for binomial trace functions) that can be stated explicitly. Poulin discovered an important separation between the classical and quantum theories of convolutional coding, by proving that a quantum convolutional encoder cannot be both noncatastrophic and recursive. Noncatastrophicity is desirable so that an iterative decoding algorithm converges when decoding a quantum turbo code whose constituents are quantum convolutional codes, and recursiveness is as well so that a quantum turbo code has a minimum distance growing nearly linearly with the length of the code, respectively. Their proof of the aforementioned theorem was admittedly “rather involved,” and as such, it has been desirable since their result to find a simpler proof. In this paper, we furnish a proof that is arguably simpler. Our approach is group-theoretic—we show that the subgroup of memory states that are part of a zero physical-weight cycle of a quantum convolutional encoder is equivalent to the centralizer of its “finite-memory” subgroup (the subgroup of memory states which eventually reach the identity memory state by identity operator inputs for the information qubits and identity or Pauli-Z operator inputs for the ancilla qubits). After proving that this symmetry holds for any quantum convolutional encoder, it easily follows that an encoder is nonrecursive if it is noncatastrophic. Our proof also illuminates why this no-go theorem does not apply to entanglement-assisted quantum convolutional encoders—the introduction of shared entanglement as a resource allows the above symmetry to be broken.
