Linear complementary pairs (LCPs) of codes play an important role in armoring implementations against side-channel attacks and fault injection attacks. One of the most common ways to construct LCP of codes is to use Euclidean linear complementary dual (LCD) codes. In this paper, we first introduce the concept of linear codes with $\sigma $ complementary dual ($\sigma $ -LCD), which includes known Euclidean LCD codes, Hermitian LCD codes, and Galois LCD codes. Like Euclidean LCD codes, $\sigma $ -LCD codes can also be used to construct LCP of codes. We show that for $q > 2$ , all $q$ -ary linear codes are $\sigma $ -LCD, and for every binary linear code $\mathcal C$ , the code $\{0\}\times \mathcal C$ is $\sigma $ -LCD. Furthermore, we study deeply $\sigma $ -LCD generalized quasi-cyclic (GQC) codes. In particular, we provide the characterizations of $\sigma $ -LCD GQC codes, self-orthogonal GQC codes, and self-dual GQC codes, respectively. Moreover, we provide the constructions of asymptotically good $\sigma $ -LCD GQC codes. Finally, we focus on $\sigma $ -LCD abelian codes and prove that all abelian codes in a semi-simple group algebra are $\sigma $ -LCD. The results derived in this paper extend those on the classical LCD codes and show that $\sigma $ -LCD codes allow the construction of LCP of codes more easily and with more flexibility. Linear codes with certain special properties have received renewed attention in recent years due to their practical applications. Among them, binary linear complementary dual (LCD) codes play an important role in implementations against side-channel attacks and fault injection attacks. Self-orthogonal codes can be used to construct quantum codes. In this paper, four classes of binary linear codes are constructed via a generic construction which has been intensively investigated in the past decade. Simple characterizations of these linear codes to be LCD or self-orthogonal are presented. Resultantly, infinite families of binary LCD codes and self-orthogonal codes are obtained. Infinite families of binary LCD codes from the duals of these four classes of linear codes are produced. Many LCD codes and self-orthogonal codes obtained in this paper are optimal or almost optimal in the sense that they meet certain bounds on general linear codes. A locally repairable code (LRC) is a linear code such that every code symbol can be recovered by accessing a small number of other code symbols. In this paper, we study bounds and constructions of LRCs from the viewpoint of parity-check matrices. Firstly, a simple and unified framework based on parity-check matrix to analyze the bounds of LRCs is proposed, and several new explicit bounds on the minimum distance of LRCs in terms of the field size are presented. In particular, we give an alternate proof of the Singleton-like bound for LRCs first proved by Gopalan et al. Some structural properties on optimal LRCs that achieve the Singleton-like bound are given. Then, we focus on constructions of optimal LRCs over the binary field. It is proved that there are only five classes of possible parameters with which optimal binary LRCs exist. Moreover, by employing the proposed parity-check matrix approach, we completely enumerate all these five classes of optimal binary LRCs attaining the Singleton-like bound in the sense of equivalence of linear codes. Minimal linear codes have interesting applications in secret sharing schemes and secure two-party computation. This paper uses characteristic functions of some subsets of $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ to construct minimal linear codes. By properties of characteristic functions, we can obtain more minimal binary linear codes from known minimal binary linear codes, which generalizes results of Ding et al. [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 64, no. 10, pp. 6536–6545, 2018]. By characteristic functions corresponding to some subspaces of $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ , we obtain many minimal linear codes, which generalizes results of [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 64, no. 10, pp. 6536–6545, 2018] and [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 65, no. 11, pp. 7067–7078, 2019]. The noise model of deletions poses significant challenges in coding theory, with basic questions like the capacity of the binary deletion channel still being open. In this paper, we study the harder model of worst case deletions, with a focus on constructing efficiently decodable codes for the two extreme regimes of high-noise and high-rate. Specifically, we construct polynomial-time decodable codes with the following tradeoffs (for any \varepsilon > 0 ): 1) codes that can correct a fraction 1- \varepsilon of deletions with rate \mathop \mathrm poly\nolimits ( \varepsilon ) over an alphabet of size \mathop \mathrm poly\nolimits (1/ \varepsilon ) ; 2) binary codes of rate 1-\tilde O(\sqrt \varepsilon ) that can correct a fraction $ \varepsilon $ of deletions; and 3) Binary codes that can be list-decoded from a fraction (1/2- \varepsilon )$ of deletions with rate \mathop {\mathrm {poly}}\nolimits ( \varepsilon ) . This paper gives the first efficient constructions which meet the qualitative goals of correcting a deletion fraction approaching 1 over bounded alphabets, and correcting a constant fraction of bit deletions with rate approaching 1 over a fixed alphabet. Marton’s inner bound is the best known achievable rate region for a general two-receiver discrete memoryless broadcast channel. In this paper, we establish improved bounds on the cardinalities of the auxiliary random variables appearing in this inner bound to the true rate region. We combine a perturbation technique, along with a representation using concave envelopes of information-theoretic functions that involve the use of auxiliary random variables, to achieve this improvement. The new cardinality bounds lead to a proof that a randomized-time-division strategy achieves every rate triple in Marton’s region for binary input broadcast channels. Linear complementary dual (LCD) cyclic codes were referred historically to as reversible cyclic codes, which had applications in data storage. Due to a newly discovered application in cryptography, there has been renewed interest in LCD codes. In particular, it has been shown that binary LCD codes play an important role in implementations against side-channel attacks and fault injection attacks. In this paper, we first present a new characterization of binary LCD codes in terms of their orthogonal or symplectic basis. Using such a characterization, we solve a conjecture proposed by Galvez et al. on the minimum distance of binary LCD codes. Next, we consider the action of the orthogonal group on the set of all LCD codes, determine all possible orbits of this action, derive simple closed formulas of the size of the orbits, and present some asymptotic results on the size of the corresponding orbits. Our results show that almost all binary LCD codes are odd-like codes with odd-like duals, and about half of $q$ -ary LCD codes have orthonormal basis, where $q$ is a power of an odd prime. In addition to their applications in data communication and storage, linear codes also have nice applications in combinatorics and cryptography. Minimal linear codes, a special type of linear codes, are preferred in secret sharing. In this paper, a necessary and sufficient condition for a binary linear code to be minimal is derived. This condition enables us to obtain three infinite families of minimal binary linear codes with $w_{\min }/w_{\max } \leq 1/2$ from a generic construction, where $w_{\min }$ and $w_{\max }$ , respectively, denote the minimum and maximum nonzero weights in a code. The projective special linear group ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$ is 2-transitive for all primes $n$ and 3-homogeneous for $n \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$ on the set $\{0,1, \ldots, n-1, \infty \}$. It is known that the extended odd-like quadratic residue codes are invariant under ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. Hence, the extended quadratic residue codes hold an infinite family of 2-designs for primes $n \equiv 1 \pmod {4}$ , an infinite family of 3-designs for primes $n \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$. To construct more $t$ -designs with $t \in \{2, 3\}$ , one would search for other extended cyclic codes over finite fields that are invariant under the action of ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. The objective of this paper is to prove that the extended quadratic residue binary codes are the only nontrivial extended binary cyclic codes that are invariant under ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. In this paper, a generic construction of codebooks based on binary codes is introduced. With this generic construction, a few previous constructions of optimal codebooks are extended, and a new class of codebooks almost meeting the Levenshtein bound is presented. Exponentially many codebooks meeting or almost meeting the Levenshtein bound from binary codes are obtained in this paper. The codebooks constructed in this paper have alphabet size 4. Switch codes, first proposed by Wang et al., are codes that are designed to increase the parallelism of data writing and reading processes in network switches. A network switch is required to write $n$ incoming packets and read $k$ outgoing packets while using $m$ memory banks, each able to write and read one packet per time unit. Each set of $n$ packets written to the switch simultaneously is called a generation. The objective is to store the packets in the banks such that every request of $k$ packets, which can belong to previous generations, can be handled by reading at most one packet from every bank. In this paper, we study a new type of switch codes that can simultaneously deliver large packet request and good coding rate. These attractive features are achieved by relaxing the request model to a natural sub-class we call consecutive requests. For this new request model, we define a new type of codes called consecutive switch codes. These codes are studied in both the computational and combinatorial models, corresponding to whether the data can be encoded or not. For binary codes, we also study an intermediate model in which a coded packet is formed by the XOR operations of at most two input packets. We present several code constructions and prove the optimality of one family of these codes by providing the corresponding lower bound. Codes over Galois rings have been studied extensively during the last three decades. Negacyclic codes over \mathop \mathrm GR\nolimits (2^a,m) of length 2^s have been characterized: the ring \mathcal R2(a,m,-1)= {\mathrm{ GR}}(2^{a},m)[x]/\langle x^{2^{s}}+1\rangle is a chain ring. Furthermore, these results have been generalized to \lambda -constacyclic codes for any unit \lambda of the form 4z-1 , . In this paper, we study more general cases and investigate all cases, where {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma) = {\mathrm{ GR}}(p^{a},m)[x]/\langle x^{p^{s}}-\gamma \rangle is a chain ring. In particular, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the ring {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma) to be a chain ring are obtained. In addition, by using this structure we investigate all \gamma -constacyclic codes over \mathop {\mathrm {GR}}\nolimits (p^{a},m) when {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma)$ is a chain ring. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of self-orthogonal and self-dual \gamma$ -constacyclic codes are also provided. Binary almost instantaneous fixed-to-variable length (AIFV) codes are lossless codes that generalize the class of instantaneous fixed-to-variable length codes. The code uses two code trees and assigns source symbols to incomplete internal nodes as well as to leaves. AIFV codes are empirically shown to attain better compression ratio than Huffman codes. Nevertheless, an upper bound on the redundancy of optimal binary AIFV codes is only known to be 1, which is the same as the bound of Huffman codes. In this paper, the upper bound is improved to 1/2, which is shown to coincide with the worst-case redundancy of the codes. Along with this, the worst-case redundancy is derived for sources with p\max \geq 1 /2, where p\max is the probability of the most likely source symbol. In addition, we propose an extension of binary AIFV codes, which use $m$ code trees and allow at most $m$ -bit decoding delay. Multiply constant-weight codes (MCWCs) have been recently studied to improve the reliability of certain physically unclonable function response. In this paper, we give combinatorial constructions for the MCWCs, which yield several new infinite families of optimal MCWCs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the Johnson-type upper bounds of the MCWCs are asymptotically tight for fixed Hamming weights and distances. Projective Reed–Muller codes were introduced by Lachaud in 1988 and their dimension and minimum distance were determined by Serre and Sørensen in 1991. In coding theory, one is also interested in the higher Hamming weights, to study the code performance. Yet, not many values of the higher Hamming weights are known for these codes, not even the second lowest weight (also known as the next-to-minimal weight) is completely determined. In this paper, we determine all the values of the next-to-minimal weight for the binary projective Reed–Muller codes, which we show to be equal to the next-to-minimal weight of Reed–Muller codes in most, but not all, cases. Locally repairable codes (LRCs) are a class of codes designed for the local correction of erasures. They have received considerable attention in recent years due to their applications in distributed storage. Most existing results on LRCs do not explicitly take into consideration the field size $q$ , i.e., the size of the code alphabet. In particular, for the binary case, only a few results are known. In this paper, we present an upper bound on the minimum distance $d$ of linear LRCs with availability, based on the work of Cadambe and Mazumdar. The bound takes into account the code length $n$ , dimension $k$ , locality $r$ , availability $t$ , and field size $q$ . Then, we study the binary linear LRCs in three aspects. First, we focus on analyzing the locality of some classical codes, i.e., cyclic codes and Reed–Muller codes, and their modified versions, which are obtained by applying the operations of extend, shorten, expurgate, augment, and lengthen. Next, we construct LRCs using phantom parity-check symbols and multi-level tensor product structure, respectively. Compared with other previous constructions of binary LRCs with fixed locality or minimum distance, our construction is much more flexible in terms of code parameters, and gives various families of high-rate LRCs, some of which are shown to be optimal with respect to their minimum distance. Finally, the availability of LRCs is studied. We investigate the locality and availability properties of several classes of one-step majority-logic decodable codes, including cyclic simplex codes, cyclic difference-set codes, and 4-cycle free regular low-density parity-check codes. Motivated by the study of deletion channels, this paper presents improved bounds on the number of subsequences obtained from a binary string $X$ of length $n$ under $t$ deletions. It is known that the number of subsequences in this setting strongly depends on the number of runs in the string $X$ ; where a run is a maximal substring of the same character. Our improved bounds are obtained by a structural analysis of the family of $r$ -run strings $X$ , an analysis in which we identify the extremal strings with respect to the number of subsequences. Specifically, for every $r$ , we present $r$ -run strings with the minimum (respectively maximum) number of subsequences under any $t$ deletions; we perform an exact analysis of the number of subsequences of these extremal strings; and show that this number can be calculated in polynomial time. In this paper, we present an algebraic construction of binary codes through rational function fields. We make use of certain multiplicative group of rational functions for our construction. In particular, the point at infinity can be employed in our construction to get codes of length up to $q+1$ , where $q$ is the ground field size. In this paper, we revisit the combinatorial error model of Mazumdar et al. that models errors in high-density magnetic recording caused by lack of knowledge of grain boundaries in the recording medium. We present new upper bounds on the cardinality/rate of binary block codes that correct errors within this model. All our bounds, except for one, are obtained using combinatorial arguments based on hypergraph fractional coverings. The exception is a bound derived via an information-theoretic argument. Recently, there has been intensive research on the weight distributions of cyclic codes. In this paper, we compute the weight distributions of three classes of cyclic codes with Niho exponents. More specifically, we obtain two classes of binary three-weight and four-weight cyclic codes and a class of nonbinary four-weight cyclic codes. The weight distributions follow from the determination of value distributions of certain exponential sums. We consider deletion correcting codes over a \(q\) -ary alphabet. It is well known that any code capable of correcting \(s\) deletions can also correct any combination of \(s\) total insertions and deletions. To obtain asymptotic upper bounds on code size, we apply a packing argument to channels that perform different mixtures of insertions and deletions. Even though the set of codes is identical for all of these channels, the bounds that we obtain vary. Prior to this paper, only the bounds corresponding to the all-insertion case and the all-deletion case were known. We recover these as special cases. The bound from the all-deletion case, due to Levenshtein, has been the best known for more than 45 years. Our generalized bound is better than Levenshtein's bound whenever the number of deletions to be corrected is larger than the alphabet size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Let m and k be positive integers with m/gcd(m,k) being odd, for a\in \BBR and b\in \BBL, the exponential sum \sumx\in \BBLi^{Tr(ax+2bx^{2^{k}+1})} is studied systematically in this paper, where i=\sqrt -1, \BBR =\BBG \BBR (4,m) is a Galois ring, \BBL is the Teichmüller set of \BBR and Tr(\cdot) is the trace function from the Galois ring \BBR to \BBZ4. Through the discussions on the solutions of certain equations and the newly developed theory of \BBZ4-valued quadratic forms, the distribution of the exponential sum is completely determined. As its applications, we can determine the Lee weight and Hamming weight distributions of a class of codes \cal C^k over \BBZ4 and the correlation distribution of a quaternary sequence family \cal U^k, respectively. Furthermore, the Hamming weight distributions of the binary codes obtained from \cal C^k under the most significant bit (MSB) and Gray maps are also determined. For the MSB map sequences of \cal U^k, the nontrivial maximal correlation value is given and the correlation distribution is determined for the Gray map sequences of \cal U^k. It should be noted that the distribution of the exponential sum for the case \gcd (m,k)\ne 1 is obtained for the first time, and then the corresponding codes and sequences are novel.
