In this paper, we present a variable-length binary code for permutations of degree n, where n is a power of 2. The Lehmer code and its variants provide a bijection between permutations and the indexes in lexicographic ordering. They provide compression of permutations approaching Shannon bound at the expense of structural information. The variable-length code proposed in this paper has asymptotically optimal compression capability while preserving structural information of permutations. In other words, the code encodes the way a permutation is organized, and is optimal in the sense that the ratio of average codeword length and the entropy of permutations approaches 1 as n tends to infinity. The encoding and decoding are efficient. Like the Lehmer code and other enumerative codes, it is not necessary to construct look-up tables. The code is complete and satisfies the prefix condition. Furthermore, the codeword length indicates how “well shuffled” a permutation is. Permutations with longer codewords seem more “random.” An enumeration method of the variable-length code is also given by using T. Cover’s enumerative coding scheme and Schalkwijk code. Linear codes over $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ of length $n$ are subgroups of $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}^{n}$. These codes are also called $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -additive codes and can be seen as a generalization of linear codes over $\mathbb {Z}_{2}$ and $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$. A $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -linear code is a code over $\mathbb {Z}_{p}$ , not necessarily linear, which is the generalized Gray map image of a $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -additive code. In 2015, a systematic encoding was found for $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$ -linear codes. Moreover, an alternative permutation decoding method, which is suitable for any binary code (not necessarily linear) with a systematic encoding, was established. In this paper, we generalize these results by presenting a systematic encoding for any $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -linear code with $s\geq 2$ and $p$ prime. We also describe a permutation decoding method for any systematic code over $\mathbb {Z}_{p}$ , not necessarily linear, and show some examples of how to use this systematic encoding in this decoding method. This paper investigates the problem of correcting multiple criss-cross insertions and deletions in arrays. More precisely, we study the unique recovery of $n \times n$ arrays affected by ${t}$ -criss-cross deletions defined as any combination of ${t_{\mathrm {r}}}$ row and ${t_{\mathrm {c}}}$ column deletions such that ${t_{\mathrm {r}}}+ {t_{\mathrm {c}}}= {t}$ for a given $t$. We show an equivalence between correcting ${t}$ -criss-cross deletions and ${t}$ -criss-cross insertions and show that a code correcting ${t}$ -criss-cross insertions/deletions has redundancy at least ${t} n + {t}\log n - \log ({t}!)$. Then, we present an existential construction of a ${t}$ -criss-cross insertion/deletion correcting code with redundancy bounded from above by ${t} n + \mathcal {O}({t}^{2} \log ^{2} n)$. The main ingredients of the presented code construction are systematic binary ${t}$ -deletion correcting codes and Gabidulin codes. The first ingredient helps locating the indices of the inserted/deleted rows and columns, thus transforming the insertion/deletion-correction problem into a row/column erasure-correction problem which is then solved using the second ingredient. In this paper, we formulate the problem to cope with the transmission of extra bits over an existing coded transmission link (referred to as coded payload link) without any cost of extra transmission energy or extra bandwidth. This is possible since a gap to the channel capacity typically exists for a practical code. A new concept, termed as accessible capacity, is introduced to specify the maximum rate at which the superposition transmission of extra bits is reliable and has a negligible effect on the performance of the coded payload link. For a binary-input output-symmetric (BIOS) memoryless channel, the accessible capacity can be characterized as the difference between the channel capacity and the mutual information rate of the coded payload link, which can be numerically evaluated for very short payload codes. For a general payload code, we present a simple lower bound on the accessible capacity, given by the channel capacity minus the coding rate of the payload code. We then focus on the scenarios where low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are implemented for the payload link. We propose to transmit extra bits by random superposition for encoding, and exhaustive search (with the aid of statistical learning) for decoding. We further propose, by establishing an auxiliary channel (called syndrome channel) induced from “zero-forcing” over the binary field, to transmit extra bits with structured codes such as repetition codes and first-order Reed-Muller (RM) codes. Deletion errors are notoriously difficult to correct. The capacity of the binary deletion channel is not yet fully known, and there is no completely satisfactory solution even to the specific problem of correcting only two deletion errors. In this paper, we show that polarization theory, along with the powerful methods of polar coding and successive-cancellation decoding, can be extended to channels with deletion errors. Our results further generalize to channels corrupted by insertion errors and/or combinations of insertions and deletions. It was recently proposed to correct deletion errors using polar codes designed for the BEC, precoded with a sufficiently powerful CRC code. In this approach, in order to correct ${d}$ deletions in a codeword of length ${n}$ , successive-cancellation decoding is run separately for each of the $\binom {n}{d}$ possible deletion patterns, while treating the deleted symbols as erasures. The resulting complexity of decoding is ${O}\bigl ({n}^{d+1}\log {n}\bigr)$. In contrast, we develop herein a natural generalization of successive-cancellation decoding to channels with deletion errors. Our algorithm is based on the recursive structure of polar codes, processing the channel output in ${m} = \log _{2} {n}$ decoding layers, just like the conventional successive-cancellation decoder. Every node in each decoding layer propagates its uncertainty about the deletion pattern to the nodes in the next layer and, eventually, the correct deletion pattern becomes visible at the decoder output, with high probability. This makes it possible to consider at most $\binom {d+2}{2}$ scenarios at each node, and the overall decoding complexity is only ${O}\bigl ({d}^{3} {n} \log {n}\bigr)$ , which scales polynomially rather than exponentially with the number of deletions. Based on the proposed algorithm, we also investigate the channel polarization phenomenon. We are able to prove weak polarization where the number of deletions ${d}$ is small, i.e. ${d}={o}({n})$. We also conjecture the strong polarization for when ${d}={O}(1)$ and provide some evidence to support this conjecture. The strong polarization, if proven, implies that our coding scheme achieves the capacity of any binary-input symmetric channel which furthermore introduces a constant number of deletions. In this paper, we consider the list decoding property of codes under insertion and deletion errors (insdel for short). Firstly, we analyse the list decodability of random insdel codes. Our result provides a more complete picture on the list decodability of insdel codes when both insertion and deletion errors happen. Secondly, we construct a family of insdel codes along with their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms through concatenation method which provides a Zyablov-type bound for insdel metric codes. The parameters of a q-ary MDS Euclidean self-dual codes are completely determined by its length and the construction of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes with new length has been widely investigated in recent years. In this paper, we give a further study on the construction of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes via generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and their extended codes. The main idea of our construction is to choose suitable evaluation points such that the corresponding (extended) GRS codes are Euclidean self-dual. Firstly, we consider the evaluation set consists of two disjoint subsets, one of which is based on the trace function, the other one is a union of a subspace and its cosets. Then four new families of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes are constructed. Secondly, we give a simple but useful lemma to ensure that the symmetric difference of two intersecting subsets of finite fields can be taken as the desired evaluation set. Based on this lemma, we generalize our first construction and provide two new families of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes. Finally, by using two multiplicative subgroups and their cosets which have nonempty intersection, we present three generic constructions of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes with flexible parameters. This paper studies a large random matrix system (LRMS) model involving an arbitrary signal distribution and forward error control (FEC) coding. We establish an area property based on the approximate message passing (AMP) algorithm. Under the assumption that the state evolution for AMP is correct for the coded system, the achievable rate of AMP is analyzed. We prove that AMP achieves the constrained capacity of the LRMS with an arbitrary signal distribution provided that a matching condition is satisfied. As a byproduct, we provide an alternative derivation for the constraint capacity of an LRMS using a proved property of AMP. We discuss realization techniques for the matching principle of binary signaling using irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and provide related numerical results. We show that the optimized codes demonstrate significantly better performance over un-matched ones under AMP. We consider the problem of constructing binary codes for correcting deletions that are localized within certain parts of the codeword that are unknown a priori. The model that we study is when $\delta \leq w$ deletions are localized in a window of size $w$ bits. These $\delta $ deletions do not necessarily occur in consecutive positions, but are restricted to the window of size $w$. The localized deletions model is a generalization of the bursty model, in which all the deleted bits are consecutive. In this paper, we construct new explicit codes for the localized model, based on the family of Guess & Check codes which was previously introduced by the authors. The codes that we construct can correct, with high probability, $\delta \leq w$ deletions that are localized in a single window of size $w$ , where $w$ grows with the block length. Moreover, these codes are systematic; have low redundancy; and have efficient deterministic encoding and decoding algorithms. Line codes make it possible to mitigate interference, to prevent short pulses, and to generate streams of bipolar signals with no direct-current (DC) power content through balancing. They find application in magnetic recording (MR) devices, in Flash devices, in optical recording devices, and in some computer standards. This paper introduces a new family of fixed-length, binary constrained codes, named lexicographically-ordered constrained codes (LOCO codes), for bipolar non-return-to-zero signaling. LOCO codes are capacity-achieving, the lexicographic indexing enables simple, practical encoding and decoding, and this simplicity is demonstrated through analysis of circuit complexity. LOCO codes are easy to balance, and their inherent symmetry minimizes the rate loss with respect to unbalanced codes having the same constraints. Furthermore, LOCO codes that forbid certain patterns can be used to alleviate inter-symbol interference in MR systems and inter-cell interference in Flash systems. Numerical results demonstrate a gain of up to 10% in rate achieved by LOCO codes with respect to other practical constrained codes, including run-length-limited codes, designed for the same purpose. Simulation results suggest that it is possible to achieve a channel density gain of about 20% in MR systems by using a LOCO code to encode only the parity bits, limiting the rate loss, of a low-density parity-check code before writing. The noise model of deletions poses significant challenges in coding theory, with basic questions like the capacity of the binary deletion channel still being open. In this paper, we study the harder model of worst case deletions, with a focus on constructing efficiently decodable codes for the two extreme regimes of high-noise and high-rate. Specifically, we construct polynomial-time decodable codes with the following tradeoffs (for any \varepsilon > 0 ): 1) codes that can correct a fraction 1- \varepsilon of deletions with rate \mathop \mathrm poly\nolimits ( \varepsilon ) over an alphabet of size \mathop \mathrm poly\nolimits (1/ \varepsilon ) ; 2) binary codes of rate 1-\tilde O(\sqrt \varepsilon ) that can correct a fraction $ \varepsilon $ of deletions; and 3) Binary codes that can be list-decoded from a fraction (1/2- \varepsilon )$ of deletions with rate \mathop {\mathrm {poly}}\nolimits ( \varepsilon ) . This paper gives the first efficient constructions which meet the qualitative goals of correcting a deletion fraction approaching 1 over bounded alphabets, and correcting a constant fraction of bit deletions with rate approaching 1 over a fixed alphabet. Lattice codes are elegant and powerful structures that not only achieve the capacity of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel but are also a key ingredient to many multiterminal schemes that exploit linearity properties. However, constructing lattice codes that can realize these benefits with low complexity is still a challenging problem. In this paper, efficient encoding and decoding algorithms are proposed for multilevel binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) lattices constructed via Construction $\text{D}'$ whose complexity is linear in the total number of coded bits. Moreover, a generalization of Construction $\text{D}'$ is proposed, which relaxes some of the nesting constraints on the parity-check matrices of the component codes, leading to a simpler and improved design. Based on this construction, low-complexity multilevel LDPC lattices are designed whose performance under multistage decoding is comparable to that of polar lattices and close to that of low-density lattice codes on the power-unconstrained AWGN channel. The goal of this paper is to present constructions of high-rate nonbinary write-once memory (WOM) codes for multilevel flash memories. The constructions provided here are all based on the basic idea of mapping high-rate binary codebooks to nonbinary codebooks. The proposed codes maintain the same length and encoding complexity as their underlying binary constituents. We begin by presenting some elementary, yet rate-efficient constructions. Afterward, we consider a high-rate two-write WOM-code defined over an alphabet of size four. In addition, we consider the application of our constructions to the creation of fixed-rate WOM codes. Switch codes, first proposed by Wang et al., are codes that are designed to increase the parallelism of data writing and reading processes in network switches. A network switch is required to write $n$ incoming packets and read $k$ outgoing packets while using $m$ memory banks, each able to write and read one packet per time unit. Each set of $n$ packets written to the switch simultaneously is called a generation. The objective is to store the packets in the banks such that every request of $k$ packets, which can belong to previous generations, can be handled by reading at most one packet from every bank. In this paper, we study a new type of switch codes that can simultaneously deliver large packet request and good coding rate. These attractive features are achieved by relaxing the request model to a natural sub-class we call consecutive requests. For this new request model, we define a new type of codes called consecutive switch codes. These codes are studied in both the computational and combinatorial models, corresponding to whether the data can be encoded or not. For binary codes, we also study an intermediate model in which a coded packet is formed by the XOR operations of at most two input packets. We present several code constructions and prove the optimality of one family of these codes by providing the corresponding lower bound. Binary almost instantaneous fixed-to-variable length (AIFV) codes are lossless codes that generalize the class of instantaneous fixed-to-variable length codes. The code uses two code trees and assigns source symbols to incomplete internal nodes as well as to leaves. AIFV codes are empirically shown to attain better compression ratio than Huffman codes. Nevertheless, an upper bound on the redundancy of optimal binary AIFV codes is only known to be 1, which is the same as the bound of Huffman codes. In this paper, the upper bound is improved to 1/2, which is shown to coincide with the worst-case redundancy of the codes. Along with this, the worst-case redundancy is derived for sources with p\max \geq 1 /2, where p\max is the probability of the most likely source symbol. In addition, we propose an extension of binary AIFV codes, which use $m$ code trees and allow at most $m$ -bit decoding delay. In this paper, we present an algebraic construction of binary codes through rational function fields. We make use of certain multiplicative group of rational functions for our construction. In particular, the point at infinity can be employed in our construction to get codes of length up to $q+1$ , where $q$ is the ground field size. Binary codes over 2D arrays are very useful in data storage, where each array column represents a storage device or unit that may suffer failure. In this paper, we propose a new framework for probabilistic construction of codes on 2D arrays. Instead of a pure combinatorial erasure model used in traditional array codes, we propose a mixed combinatorial-probabilistic model of limiting the number of column failures, and assuming a binary erasure channel in each failing column. For this model, we give code constructions and detailed analysis that allow sustaining a large number of column failures with graceful degradation in the fraction of erasures correctable in failing columns. Another advantage of the new framework is that it uses low-complexity iterative decoding. The key component in the analysis of the new codes is to analyze the decoding graphs induced by the failed columns, and infer the decoding performance as a function of the code design parameters, as well as the array size and failure parameters. A particularly interesting class of codes, called probabilistically maximum distance separable (MDS) array codes, gives fault-tolerance that is equivalent to traditional MDS array codes. This paper studies coding schemes for the q-ary symmetric channel based on binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes that work for any alphabet size q=2^m, m\in \BBN , thus complementing some recently proposed packet-based schemes requiring large q. First, theoretical optimality of a simple layered scheme is shown; then, a practical coding scheme based on a simple modification of standard binary LDPC decoding is proposed. The decoder is derived from first principles and using a factor-graph representation of a front end that maps q-ary symbols to groups of m bits connected to a binary code. The front end can be processed with a complexity that is linear in m=\log 2 q. An extrinsic information transfer chart analysis is carried out and used for code optimization. The first-order moment of (d,k)-constrained codes is investigated in this paper. A generalized moment balancing template is proposed to encode a (d,k) sequence into a single insertion or deletion correcting codeword without losing the constraint property. By relocating 0's in moment balancing runs, which appear in a pairwise manner of a (d,k) sequence, the first-order moment of this sequence can be modified to satisfy the Varshamov–Tenengolts construction. With a reasonably large base in the modulo system introduced by the Varshamov–Tenengolts construction, this generalized moment balancing template can be applied to run-length limited sequences. The asymptotic bound of the redundancy introduced by the template for (d,k) sequences is of the same order as the universal template for random sequences and, therefore, the redundancy is small and suitable for long sequences of practical interest. Nine new two-dimensional Optical Orthogonal Codes (2-D OOCs) are presented here, all sharing the common feature of a code size that is much larger in relation to the number of time slots than those of constructions appearing previously in the literature. Each of these constructions is either optimal or asymptotically optimal with respect to either the original Johnson bound or else a nonbinary version of the Johnson bound introduced in this paper. The first five codes are constructed using polynomials over finite fields—the first construction is optimal while the remaining four are asymptotically optimal. The next two codes are constructed using rational functions in place of polynomials and these are asymptotically optimal. The last two codes, also asymptotically optimal, are constructed by composing two of the above codes with a constant weight binary code. Also presented is a three-dimensional Optical Orthogonal Code (3-D OOC) that exploits the polarization dimension.
