We consider the problem of communicating over a channel that randomly “tears” the message block into small pieces of different sizes and shuffles them. For the binary torn-paper channel with block length $n$ and pieces of length ${\mathrm{ Geometric}}(p_{n})$ , we characterize the capacity as $C = e^{-\alpha }$ , where $\alpha = \lim _{n\to \infty } p_{n} \log n$. Our results show that the case of ${\mathrm{ Geometric}}(p_{n})$ -length fragments and the case of deterministic length- $(1/p_{n})$ fragments are qualitatively different and, surprisingly, the capacity of the former is larger. Intuitively, this is due to the fact that, in the random fragments case, large fragments are sometimes observed, which boosts the capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The “carbon copy onto dirty paper” (CCDP) channel is the compound “writing on dirty paper” channel in which the channel output is obtained as the sum of the channel input, white Gaussian noise and a Gaussian state sequence randomly selected among a set possible realizations. The transmitter has non-causal knowledge of the set of possible state sequences but does not know which sequence is selected to produce the channel output. We study the capacity of the CCDP channel for two scenarios: 1) the state sequences are independent and identically distributed; and 2) the state sequences are scaled versions of the same sequence. In the first scenario, we show that a combination of superposition coding, time-sharing, and Gel’fand-Pinsker binning is sufficient to approach the capacity to within 3 bits per channel use for any number of possible state realizations. In the second scenario, we derive capacity to within 4 bits per channel use for the case of two possible state sequences. This result is extended to the CCDP channel with any number of possible state sequences under certain conditions on the scaling parameters, which we denote as “strong fading” regime. This paper studies the second-order coding rates for memoryless channels with a state sequence known non-causally at the encoder. In the case of finite alphabets, an achievability result is obtained using constant-composition random coding, and by using a small fraction of the block to transmit the empirical distribution of the state sequence. For error probabilities less than 0.5, it is shown that the second-order rate improves on an existing one based on independent and identically distributed random coding. In the Gaussian case (dirty paper coding) with an almost-sure power constraint, an achievability result is obtained using random coding over the surface of a sphere, and using a small fraction of the block to transmit a quantized description of the state power. In wireless networks, the link connectivity may be intermittent due to shadowing, burstiness of data arrival, or uncoordinated resource allocation. In this paper, we model the intermittence of links as Bernoulli distributed random channel states, termed intermittence channel states, and study the impact of the corresponding channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel (BC). Moreover, due to the heterogeneous timeliness of intermittence channel states, the CSIT considered in this paper is hybrid. More specifically, the CSIT of each link can be perfectly (causally or non-causally) available, delayed, or not available. When the links are connected, we adopt a general setting that the received signal-to-noise ratios can be different. Our contribution is the characterization of the capacity regions of intermittent Gaussian BC to within bounded gaps for all combinations of hybrid CSIT, except for scenario DN (delayed CSIT of receiver 1, no CSIT of receiver 2). For scenario DN, we propose an opportunistic physical layer network coding scheme that achieves a strictly larger degree-of-freedom (DoF) region than the no-CSIT DoF region. As a corollary, single-user CSIT is able to increase the sum DoF for intermittent Gaussian BC (also the capacity region for the erasure BC, as a by-product). This result is in sharp contrast to the recent negative result by Davoodi and Jafar, where it is shown that for fast-fading multiple-input single-output BC with continuous channel states, single-user CSIT does not help at all in terms of sum DoF. In its most elementary form, compressed sensing studies the design of decoding algorithms to recover a sufficiently sparse vector or code from a lower dimensional linear measurement vector. Typically it is assumed that the decoder has access to the encoder matrix, which in the combinatorial case is sparse and binary. In this paper we consider the problem of designing a decoder to recover a set of sparse codes from their linear measurements alone, that is without access to encoder matrix. To this end we study the matrix factorisation task of recovering both the encoder and sparse coding matrices from the associated linear measurement matrix. The contribution of this paper is a computationally efficient decoding algorithm, Decoder-Expander Based Factorisation, with strong performance guarantees. Under mild assumptions on the sparse coding matrix and by deploying a novel random encoder matrix, we prove that Decoder-Expander Based Factorisation recovers both the encoder and sparse coding matrix at the optimal measurement rate with high probability and from a near optimal number of measurement vectors. In addition, our experiments demonstrate the efficacy and computational efficiency of our algorithm in practice. Beyond compressed sensing, our results may be of interest for researchers working in areas as diverse as linear sketching, coding theory, matrix compression and dictionary learning. In this paper, we consider variable-length coding over the memoryless binary asymmetric channel (BAC) with full noiseless feedback, including the binary symmetric channel (BSC) as a special case. In 2012, Naghshvar et al. introduced a coding scheme, which we refer to as the small-enough-difference (SED) coding scheme. For symmetric binary-input channels, the deterministic variable-length feedback (VLF) code constructed with the SED coding scheme asymptotically achieves both capacity and Burnashev’s optimal error exponent. Building on the work of Naghshvar et al., this paper extends the SED coding scheme to the BAC and develops a non-asymptotic VLF achievability bound that is shown to achieve both capacity and the optimal error exponent. For the specific case of the BSC, we develop an additional non-asymptotic VLF achievability bound using a two-phase analysis that leverages both a submartingale synthesis and a Markov chain time of first passage analysis. Numerical evaluations show that both new VLF achievability bounds outperform Polyanskiy’s achievability bound for variable-length stop-feedback codes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A functional $k$ -batch code of dimension $s$ consists of $n$ servers storing linear combinations of $s$ linearly independent information bits. Any multiset request of size $k$ of linear combinations (or requests) of the information bits can be recovered by $k$ disjoint subsets of the servers. The goal under this paradigm is to find the minimum number of servers for given values of $s$ and $k$. A recent conjecture states that for any $k=2^{s-1}$ requests the optimal solution requires $2^{s}-1$ servers. This conjecture is verified for $s \leqslant 5$ but previous work could only show that codes with $n=2^{s}-1$ servers can support a solution for $k=2^{s-2} + 2^{s-4} + \left \lfloor{ \frac { 2^{s/2}}{\sqrt {24}} }\right \rfloor $ requests. This paper reduces this gap and shows the existence of codes for $k=\lfloor \frac {5}{6}2^{s-1} \rfloor - s$ requests with the same number of servers. Another construction in the paper provides a code with $n=2^{s+1}-2$ servers and $k=2^{s}$ requests, which is an optimal result. In this paper, we consider encoding strategies for the Z-channel with noiseless feedback. We analyze the combinatorial setting where the maximum number of errors inflicted by an adversary is proportional to the number of transmissions, which goes to infinity. Without feedback, it is known that the rate of optimal asymmetric-error-correcting codes for the error fraction $\tau \ge 1/4$ vanishes as the blocklength grows. In this paper, we give an efficient feedback encoding scheme with $n$ transmissions that achieves a positive rate for any fraction of errors $\tau < 1$ and $n\to \infty $. In the scalar dirty multiple-access channel, in addition to Gaussian noise, two additive interference signals are present, each known non-causally to a single transmitter. It was shown by Philosof et al. that for strong interferences, an independent identically distributed ensemble of codes does not achieve the capacity region. Rather, a structured-codes approach was presented that was shown to be optimal in the limit of high signal-to-noise ratios, where the sum capacity is dictated by the minimal (“bottleneck”) channel gain. In this paper, we consider the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) variant of this setting. In order to incorporate structured codes in this case, one can utilize matrix decompositions that transform the channel into effective parallel scalar dirty multiple-access channels. This approach, however, suffers from a “bottleneck” effect for each effective scalar channel and, therefore, the achievable rates strongly depend on the chosen decomposition. It is shown that a recently proposed decomposition, where the diagonals of the effective channel matrices are equal up to a scaling factor, is optimal at high signal-to-noise ratios, under an equal rank assumption. Caching is an efficient way to reduce network traffic congestion during peak hours by storing some content at the users’ local caches. For the shared-link network with end-user-caches, Maddah-Ali and Niesen proposed a two-phase coded caching strategy. In practice, users may communicate with the server through intermediate relays. This paper studies the tradeoff between the memory size ${\mathsf M}$ and the network load ${\mathsf R}$ for the networks where a server with ${\mathsf N}$ files is connected to ${\mathsf H}$ relays (without caches), which in turn are connected to ${\mathsf K}$ users equipped with caches of ${\mathsf M}$ files. When each user is connected to a different subset of ${\mathsf r}$ relays, i.e., ${\mathsf K}= \binom {\mathsf H}{\mathsf r}$ , the system is referred to as a combination network with end-user-caches. In this work, converse bounds are derived for the practically motivated case of uncoded cache contents, that is, bits of the various files are directly pushed into the user caches without any coding. In this case, once the cache contents and the users’ demands are known, the problem reduces to a general index coding problem. This paper shows that relying on a well-known “acyclic index coding converse bound” results in converse bounds that are not tight for combination networks with end-user-caches. A novel converse bound that leverages the network topology is proposed, which is the tightest converse bound known to date. As a result of independent interest, an inequality that generalizes the well-known sub-modularity of entropy is derived. Several novel caching schemes are proposed, based on the Maddah-Ali and Niesen cache placement. These schemes leverage the structure of the combination network or/and perform interference elimination at the end-users. The proposed schemes are proved: (i) to be (order) optimal for some $({\mathsf N}, {\mathsf M}, {\mathsf H}, {\mathsf r})$ parameters regimes under the constraint of uncoded cache placement, and (ii) to outperform the state-of-the-art schemes in numerical evaluations. This paper formulates a distributed computation problem, where a master asks ${\mathsf N}$ distributed workers to compute a linearly separable function. The task function can be expressed as ${\mathsf K}_{\mathrm{ c}}$ linear combinations of ${\mathsf K}$ messages, where each message is a function of one dataset. Our objective is to find the optimal tradeoff between the computation cost (number of uncoded datasets assigned to each worker) and the communication cost (number of symbols the master must download), such that from the answers of any ${\mathsf N}_{\mathrm{ r}}$ out of ${\mathsf N}$ workers the master can recover the task function with high probability, where the coefficients of the ${\mathsf K}_{\mathrm{ c}}$ linear combinations are uniformly i.i.d. over some large enough finite field. The formulated problem can be seen as a generalized version of some existing problems, such as distributed gradient coding and distributed linear transform. In this paper, we consider the specific case where the computation cost is minimum, and propose novel achievability schemes and converse bounds for the optimal communication cost. Achievability and converse bounds coincide for some system parameters; when they do not match, we prove that the achievable distributed computing scheme is optimal under the constraint of a widely used ‘cyclic assignment’ scheme on the datasets. Our results also show that when ${\mathsf K}= {\mathsf N}$ , with the same communication cost as the optimal distributed gradient coding scheme proposed by Tandon et al. from which the master recovers one linear combination of ${\mathsf K}$ messages, our proposed scheme can let the master recover any additional ${\mathsf N}_{\mathrm{ r}}-1$ independent linear combinations of messages with high probability. Distributed Arithmetic Coding (DAC) is a practical realization of Slepian-Wolf coding that partitions source space into cosets. Coset Cardinality Spectrum (CCS) is an important property of DAC that was defined in our previous work. In this paper, we give two applications of CCS. First, we find that DAC bitstream is not compact. The rate loss of DAC bitstream is caused by two factors: unequal coset partitioning and bit indivisibility. It is proved that as code length goes to infinity, the expected value of bit-indivisibility rate loss will tend to 0.5 for any irrational Rate Change Step (RCS), where the RCS refers to the rate change when one source bit is flipped. With the help of CCS, the bit-indivisibility rate loss can be compensated to some extend. Especially, for any irrational RCS, as code length goes to infinity, the expected value of the remaining bit-indivisibility rate loss after compensation will tend to about 0.47. The second application of CCS is DAC decoder design. We derive the formula of path metric and find that in the original paper on DAC, the intuitive formula of path metric is not correct. In general coding theory, we often assume that error is observed in transferring or storing encoded symbols, while the process of encoding itself is error-free. Motivated by recent applications of coding theory, in this paper, we consider the case where the process of encoding is distributed and prone to error. We introduce the problem of distributed encoding, comprised of a set of $K \in \mathbb {N}$ isolated source nodes and $N \in \mathbb {N}$ encoding nodes. Each source node has one symbol from a finite field, which is sent to each of the encoding nodes. Each encoding node stores an encoded symbol from the same field, as a function of the received symbols. However, some of the source nodes are controlled by the adversary and may send different symbols to different encoding nodes. Depending on the number of the adversarial nodes, denoted by $\beta \in \mathbb {N}$ , and the cardinality of the set of symbols that each one generates, denoted by $v \in \mathbb {N}$ , the process of decoding from the encoded symbols could be impossible. Assume that a decoder connects to an arbitrary subset of $t \in \mathbb {N}$ encoding nodes and wants to decode the symbols of the honest nodes correctly, without necessarily identifying the sets of honest and adversarial nodes. An important characteristic of a distributed encoding system is $t^{*} \in \mathbb {N}$ , the minimum of such $t$ , which is a function of $K$ , $N$ , $\beta $ , and $v$. In this paper, we study the distributed linear encoding system, i.e. one in which the encoding nodes use linear coding. We show that $t^{*}_{\textrm {Linear}}=K+2\beta (v-1)$ , if $N\ge K+2\beta (v-1)$ , and $t^{*}_{\textrm {Linear}}=N$ , if $N\le K+2\beta (v-1)$. In order to achieve $t^{*}_{\textrm {Linear}}$ , we use random linear coding and show that in any feasible solution that the decoder finds, the messages of the honest nodes are decoded correctly. In order to prove the converse of the fundamental limit, we show that when the adversary behaves in a particular way, it can always confuse the decoder between two feasible solutions that differ in the message of at least one honest node. This paper studies the problem of constructing codes correcting deletions in arrays. Under this model, it is assumed that an $n \times n$ array can experience deletions of rows and columns. These deletion errors are referred to as $({t_{\mathrm {r}}}, {t_{\mathrm {c}}})$ -criss-cross deletions if ${t_{\mathrm {r}}}$ rows and ${t_{\mathrm {c}}}$ columns are deleted, while a code correcting these deletion patterns is called a $({t_{\mathrm {r}}}, {t_{\mathrm {c}}})$ -criss-cross deletion correction code. The definitions for criss-cross insertions are similar. It is first shown that when $t_{r}=t_{c}$ the problems of correcting criss-cross deletions and criss-cross insertions are equivalent. The focus of this paper lies on the case of (1, 1)-criss-cross deletions. A non-asymptotic upper bound on the cardinality of (1, 1)-criss-cross deletion correction codes is shown which assures that the redundancy is at least $2n-3+2\log n$ bits. A code construction with an existential encoding and an explicit decoding algorithm is presented. The redundancy of the construction is at most $2n+4 \log n + 7 +2 \log e$. Uplink-downlink duality refers to the fact that under a sum-power constraint, the capacity regions of a Gaussian multiple-access channel and a Gaussian broadcast channel with Hermitian transposed channel matrices are identical. This paper generalizes this result to a cooperative cellular network, in which remote access-points are deployed as relays in serving the users under the coordination of a central processor (CP). In this model, the users and the relays are connected over noisy wireless links, while the relays and the CP are connected over noiseless but rate-limited fronthaul links. Based on a Lagrangian technique, this paper establishes a duality relationship between such a multiple-access relay channel and broadcast relay channel, under the assumption that the relays use compression-based strategies. Specifically, we show that under the same total transmit power constraint and individual fronthaul rate constraints, the achievable rate regions of the Gaussian multiple-access and broadcast relay channels are identical, when either independent compression or Wyner-Ziv and multivariate compression strategies are used. The key observations are that if the beamforming vectors at the relays are fixed, the sum-power minimization problems under the achievable rate and fronthaul constraints in both the uplink and the downlink can be transformed into either a linear programming or a semidefinite programming problem depending on the compression technique, and that the uplink and downlink problems are Lagrangian duals of each other. Moreover, the dual variables corresponding to the downlink rate constraints become the uplink powers; the dual variables corresponding to the downlink fronthaul constraints become the uplink quantization noises. Pattern recognition based on a high-dimensional predictor is considered. A classifier is defined which is based on a Transformer encoder. The rate of convergence of the misclassification probability of the classifier towards the optimal misclassification probability is analyzed. It is shown that this classifier is able to circumvent the curse of dimensionality provided the a posteriori probability satisfies a suitable hierarchical composition model. Furthermore, the difference between the Transformer classifiers theoretically analyzed in this paper and the ones used in practice today is illustrated by means of classification problems in natural language processing. This paper studies low-latency streaming codes for the multi-hop network. The source transmits a sequence of messages to a destination through a chain of relays, and requires the destination to reconstruct each message by its deadline. We assume that each communication link is subjected to a certain maximum number of packet erasures. The case of a single relay (a three-node network) was considered in Fong et al. (2020). A coding scheme known as symbol-wise decode and forward was proposed. In the present work, we propose an alternative scheme that is different from Fong et al. (2020) and still achieves the same rate as in Fong et al. (2020) for the one hop case as the field-size goes to infinity. Furthermore, our proposed scheme naturally generalizes to the case of multiple-relay nodes yielding new achievable rates for this setting. The main difference with Fong et al. (2020) is that our proposed scheme exploits the ability of the relay nodes to adapt the transmission based on the erasures on the previous link. Hence, we refer to our scheme as “state-dependent” and contrast it with the scheme in Fong et al. (2020) that is state-independent. Our scheme requires the relay nodes to append a header to the transmitted packets, and we show that the size of the header does not depend on the field-size of the code. We also derive an upper bound on the maximal streaming rate achievable over a network with an arbitrary number of relays. We show that this upper bound matches our achievable rate in the special case when the maximal number of erasures on the first link is greater than or equal to the maximal number of erasures on each of the following links, and the field size goes to infinity. The topological interference management (TIM) problem refers to the study of the $K$ -user partially connected interference networks with no channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT), except for the knowledge of network topology. In this paper, we study the TIM problem with confidential messages (TIM-CM), where message confidentiality must be satisfied in addition to reliability constraints. In particular, each transmitted message must be decodable at its intended receiver and remain confidential at the remaining $(K-1)$ receivers. Our main contribution is to present a comprehensive set of results for the TIM-CM problem by studying the symmetric secure degrees of freedom (SDoF). To this end, we first characterize necessary and sufficient conditions for feasibility of positive symmetric SDoF for any arbitrary topology. We next present two achievable schemes for the TIM-CM problem: For the first scheme, we use the concept of secure partition and, for the second one, we use the concept of secure independent sets. We also present outer bounds on symmetric SDoF for any arbitrary network topology. In this paper, we study the problem of relaying a single bit of information across a series of binary symmetric channels, and the associated trade-off between the number of hops $m$ , the transmission time $n$ , and the error probability. We introduce a simple, efficient, and deterministic protocol that attains positive information velocity (i.e., a non-vanishing ratio $\frac {m}{n}$ and small error probability) and is significantly simpler than existing protocols that do so. In addition, we characterize the optimal low-noise and high-noise scaling laws of the information velocity, and we adapt our 1-bit protocol to transmit $k$ bits over $m$ hops with $\mathcal {O}(m+k)$ transmission time. This paper investigates the theory of sum-rank-metric codes for which the individual matrix blocks may have different sizes. Various bounds on the cardinality of a code are derived, along with their asymptotic extensions. The duality theory of sum-rank-metric codes is also explored, showing that MSRD codes (the sum-rank analogue of MDS codes) dualize to MSRD codes only if all matrix blocks have the same number of columns. In the latter case, duality considerations lead to an upper bound on the number of blocks for MSRD codes. The paper also contains various constructions of sum-rank-metric codes for variable block sizes, illustrating the possible behaviours of these objects with respect to bounds, existence, and duality properties. Both linear complementary dual (LCD) codes and maximum distance separable (MDS) codes have good algebraic structures, and they have interesting practical applications such as communication systems, data storage, quantum codes, and so on. So far, most of LCD MDS codes have been constructed by employing generalized Reed-Solomon codes. In this paper we construct some classes of new Euclidean LCD MDS codes and Hermitian LCD MDS codes which are not monomially equivalent to Reed-Solomon codes, called LCD MDS codes of non-Reed-Solomon type. Our method is based on the constructions of Beelen et al. (2017) and Roth and Lempel (1989). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper on the construction of LCD MDS codes of non-Reed-Solomon type; any LCD MDS code of non-Reed-Solomon type constructed by our method is not monomially equivalent to any LCD code constructed by the method of Carlet et al. Barcoding photons, atoms, and any quantum states can provide a host of functionalities that could benefit future quantum communication systems and networks beyond today’s imagination. As a significant application of barcoding photons, we introduce code division multiple-access (CDMA) communication systems for various applications. In this context, we introduce and discuss the fundamental principles of a novel quantum CDMA (QCDMA) technique based on spectrally encoding and decoding of continuous-mode quantum light pulses. In particular, we present the mathematical models of various QCDMA modules that are fundamental in describing an ideal and typical QCDMA system, such as quantum signal sources, quantum spectral encoding phase operators, M × M quantum broadcasting star-coupler, quantum spectral phase decoding operators, and the quantum receivers. Following the above discussions, we then elaborate on a QCDMA system with M users. In describing a QCDMA system, this paper considers a unified approach where the input continuous-mode quantum light pulses can take on any form of pure states such as quantum coherent (Glauber) states and quantum number (Fock) states. The mathematical presentation is independent of the form of the input pure quantum states. We show that the spectrally encoded quantum states of the light at the quantum star-coupler output are not, in general, factorized states, except for input Glauber states. For input number states, one can observe features like entanglement and quantum interference. Moreover and interestingly, as a consequence of Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, the quantum signals sent by photon number states obtain complete phase uncertainty at the time of measurement. Therefore, at the receiver output, the multiaccess inter-signal interference vanishes. Due to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, the received signal intensity at the photodetector’s output, right at the time of measurement, changes from coherent detection scheme for input Glauber states to incoherent detection scheme for input number states. We also would like to highlight that the mathematical models and tools developed in this paper, in the context of QCDMA, become very useful for developing and analyzing other quantum multiple-access techniques based on wavelength, space and time domain. Furthermore, our mathematical model is valuable in signal design and data modulations of point-to-point quantum communications, quantum pulse shaping, and quantum radar signals and systems where the inputs are continuous mode quantum signals. QCDMA may open up novel possibilities for various quantum technologies such as data privacy, distributed quantum computation, quantum internet, and anti-jamming quantum communication systems. This paper studies reconstruction of strings based upon their substrings spectrum. Under this paradigm, it is assumed that all substrings of some fixed length are received and the goal is to reconstruct the string. While many existing works assumed that substrings are received error free, we follow in this paper the noisy setup of this problem that was first studied by Gabrys and Milenkovic. The goal of this study is twofold. First we study the setup in which not all substrings in the multispectrum are received, and then we focus on the case where the read substrings are not error free. In each case we provide specific code constructions of strings that their reconstruction is guaranteed even in the presence of failure in either model. This paper studies a generalization of sparse superposition codes (SPARCs) for communication over the complex additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. In a SPARC, the codebook is defined in terms of a design matrix, and each codeword is a generated by multiplying the design matrix with a sparse message vector. In the standard SPARC construction, information is encoded in the locations of the non-zero entries of the message vector. In this paper we generalize the construction and consider modulated SPARCs, where information is encoded in both the locations and the values of the non-zero entries of the message vector. We focus on the case where the non-zero entries take values from a phase-shift keying (PSK) constellation. We propose a computationally efficient approximate message passing (AMP) decoder, and obtain analytical bounds on the state evolution parameters which predict the error performance of the decoder. Using these bounds we show that PSK-modulated SPARCs are asymptotically capacity achieving for the complex AWGN channel, with either spatial coupling or power allocation. We also provide numerical simulation results to demonstrate the error performance at finite code lengths. The interest in channel models in which the data is sent as an unordered set of binary strings has increased lately, due to emerging applications in DNA storage, among others. In this paper we analyze the minimal redundancy of binary codes for this channel under substitution errors, and provide several constructions, some of which are shown to be asymptotically optimal up to constants. The surprising result in this paper is that while the information vector is sliced into a set of unordered strings, the amount of redundant bits that are required to correct errors is order-wise equivalent to the amount required in the classical error correcting paradigm. Live communication is ubiquitous, and frequently must contend with reliability issues due to packet loss during transmission. The effect of packet losses can be alleviated by using erasure codes, which aid in recovering lost packets. Streaming codes are a class of codes designed for the live communication setting, which encode a stream of message packets arriving sequentially for transmission over a packet-loss channel. The existing study of streaming codes considers settings where the sizes of the message packets to be transmitted are all fixed. However, message packets occur with unpredictable and variable sizes in many applications, such as videoconferencing. In this paper, we present a generalized model for streaming codes that incorporates message packets of variable sizes. We show that the variability in the sizes of message packets induces a new trade-off between the rate and the decoding delay under lossless transmission. Moreover, the variability in the sizes of message packets impacts the optimal rate of transmission. To address this, we introduce algorithms to compute upper and lower bounds on the optimal rate for any given sequence of sizes of message packets. We then design an explicit streaming code for the proposed model. We empirically evaluate the code construction over a live video trace for several representative parameter settings, and show that the rate of the construction is approximately 90% of an upper bound and 5%–48% higher than naively using the existing streaming codes. Previous works on age of information and erasure channels have dealt with specific models and computed the average age or average peak age for certain settings. In this paper, given a source that produces a letter every $T_{s}$ seconds and an erasure channel that can be used every $T_{c}$ seconds, we ask what is the coding strategy that minimizes the time-average “age of information” that an observer of the channel output incurs. We first analyze the case where the source alphabet and the channel-input alphabet have the same size. We show that a trivial coding strategy is optimal and a closed form expression for the age can be derived. We then analyze the case where the alphabets have different sizes. We use a random coding argument to bound the average age and show that the average age achieved using random codes converges to the optimal average age of linear block codes as the source alphabet becomes large. In a breakthrough, Hastings showed that there exist quantum channels whose classical Holevo capacity is superadditive i.e. more classical information can be transmitted by quantum encoding strategies entangled across multiple channel uses as compared to unentangled quantum encoding strategies. Hastings’ proof used Haar random unitaries to exhibit superadditivity. In this paper we show that a unitary chosen uniformly at random from an approximate $n^{2/3}$ -design gives rise to a quantum channel with superadditive classical Holevo capacity, where $n$ is the dimension of the unitary exhibiting the Stinespring dilation of the channel superoperator. We follow the geometric functional analytic approach of Aubrun, Szarek and Werner in order to prove our result. More precisely we prove a sharp Dvoretzky-like theorem stating that, with high probability under the choice of a unitary from an approximate $t$ -design, random subspaces of large dimension make a Lipschitz function take almost constant value. Such theorems were known earlier only for Haar random unitaries. We obtain our result by appealing to Low’s technique for proving concentration of measure for an approximate $t$ -design, combined with a stratified analysis of the variational behaviour of Lipschitz functions on the unit sphere in high dimension. The stratified analysis is the main technical advance of this work. Haar random unitaries require at least $\Omega (n^{2})$ random bits in order to describe them with good precision. In contrast, there exist exact $n^{2/3}$ -designs using only $O(n^{2/3} \log n)$ random bits. Thus, our work can be viewed as a partial derandomisation of Hastings’ result, and a step towards the quest of finding an explicit quantum channel with superadditive classical Holevo capacity. Finally we also show that for any $p > 1$ , approximate unitary $n^{1.7}$ -designs give rise to channels violating subadditivity of Rényi $p$ -entropy. In addition to stratified analysis, the proof of this result uses a new technique of approximating a monotonic differentiable function defined on a closed bounded interval and its derivative by moderate degree polynomials which should be of independent interest. In this paper, we present a variable-length binary code for permutations of degree n, where n is a power of 2. The Lehmer code and its variants provide a bijection between permutations and the indexes in lexicographic ordering. They provide compression of permutations approaching Shannon bound at the expense of structural information. The variable-length code proposed in this paper has asymptotically optimal compression capability while preserving structural information of permutations. In other words, the code encodes the way a permutation is organized, and is optimal in the sense that the ratio of average codeword length and the entropy of permutations approaches 1 as n tends to infinity. The encoding and decoding are efficient. Like the Lehmer code and other enumerative codes, it is not necessary to construct look-up tables. The code is complete and satisfies the prefix condition. Furthermore, the codeword length indicates how “well shuffled” a permutation is. Permutations with longer codewords seem more “random.” An enumeration method of the variable-length code is also given by using T. Cover’s enumerative coding scheme and Schalkwijk code. The strong secrecy transmission problem of the arbitrarily varying wiretap channel (AVWC) with input and state constraints is investigated in this paper. First, a stochastic-encoder code lower bound of the strong secrecy capacity is established by applying the type argument and Csiszár’s almost independent coloring lemma. Then, a superposition stochastic-encoder code lower bound of the secrecy capacity is provided. The superposition stochastic-encoder code lower bound can be larger than the ordinary stochastic-encoder code lower bound. Random code lower and upper bounds of the secrecy capacity of the AVWC with constraints are further provided. Based on these results, we further consider a special case of the model, namely severely less noisy AVWC, and give the stochastic-encoder code and random code capacities. It is proved that the stochastic-encoder code capacity of the AVWC with constraints is either equal to or strictly smaller than the corresponding random code capacity, which is consistent with the property of the ordinary AVC. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to better illustrate our capacity results. Compared to the soft covering lemma that requires the codewords to be generated i.i.d., our method has more relaxed requirements regarding codebooks. It is proved that the good codebooks for secure transmission can be generated by choosing codewords randomly from a given type set, which is critical when considering the AVWC with constraints. This paper describes new, simple, recursive methods of construction for orientable sequences, i.e. periodic binary sequences in which any $n$ -tuple occurs at most once in a period in either direction. As has been previously described, such sequences have potential applications in automatic position-location systems, where the sequence is encoded onto a surface and a reader needs only examine $n$ consecutive encoded bits to determine its location and orientation on the surface. The only previously described method of construction (due to Dai et al.) is somewhat complex, whereas the new techniques are simple to both describe and implement. The methods of construction cover both the standard ‘infinite periodic’ case, and also the aperiodic, finite sequence, case. Quantum readout provides a general framework for formulating statistical discrimination of quantum channels. Several paths have been taken for such this problem. However, there is much to be done in the avenue of optimizing channel discrimination using classical codes. At least two open questions can be pointed out: how to construct low complexity encoding schemes that are interesting for channel discrimination and, more importantly, how to develop capacity-achieving protocols. This paper aims at presenting a solution to these questions using polar codes. Firstly, we characterize the information rate and reliability parameter of the channels under polar encoding. We also show that the error probability of the scheme proposed decays exponentially with the square root of the code length. A block code is called a locally recoverable code (LRC for short) with $(r,\delta)$ -locality, if subject to any $\delta -1$ erasure failures, every symbol in the encoding can still be recovered by accessing at most $r$ other symbols. Recently, it was discovered by several authors that a $q$ -ary optimal $(r,\delta)$ -LRC, i.e., an LRC achieving the generalized Singleton-type bound, can have length much bigger than $q+1$. This is quite different from the classical $q$ -ary MDS codes where it is conjectured that the code length is upper bounded by $q+1$ (or $q+2$ for some special cases). In this paper, we further investigate constructions of optimal $(r,\delta)$ -LRCs along the line of using parity-check matrices. Inspired by classical Reed-Solomon codes and the work in Jin (2019), we equip parity-check matrices with the Vandermonde structure. It turns out that a parity-check matrix with the Vandermonde structure that produces an optimal LRC must obey certain disjoint property for subsets of $\mathbb {F}_{q}$. We manage to show the existence of these disjoint subsets. Thus, this yields an optimal $(r,\delta)$ -LRC with code length $\Omega \left({q^{\frac {\delta }{2}\left({1+\frac {1}{\lfloor \frac {d-1}{\delta }\rfloor -1}}\right)}}\right)\vphantom {\bigg)_{j}}$ , where $d$ is the minimum distance. In particular, to our surprise, for $\delta =2$ this disjoint condition is equivalent to a well-studied problem in extremal graph theory. With the help of extremal graph theory, we succeed to improve all of the best known results in Guruswami et al. (2018) for $d\geq 7$. Linear codes over $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ of length $n$ are subgroups of $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}^{n}$. These codes are also called $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -additive codes and can be seen as a generalization of linear codes over $\mathbb {Z}_{2}$ and $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$. A $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -linear code is a code over $\mathbb {Z}_{p}$ , not necessarily linear, which is the generalized Gray map image of a $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -additive code. In 2015, a systematic encoding was found for $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$ -linear codes. Moreover, an alternative permutation decoding method, which is suitable for any binary code (not necessarily linear) with a systematic encoding, was established. In this paper, we generalize these results by presenting a systematic encoding for any $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -linear code with $s\geq 2$ and $p$ prime. We also describe a permutation decoding method for any systematic code over $\mathbb {Z}_{p}$ , not necessarily linear, and show some examples of how to use this systematic encoding in this decoding method. Erasure codes are essential for providing efficient resilience against node failures in distributed storage. Typically, an $[n, k]$ erasure code encodes $k$ symbols into $n$ symbols which are then stored in different nodes. Recent work by Kadekodi et al. shows that the failure rates of storage nodes vary significantly over time, and that changing the rate of the code (via a change in $n$ and $k$) in response to such variations provides substantial storage space savings. However, the resource overhead of re-encoding the already encoded data is prohibitively high. We present a new theoretical framework formalizing code conversion—the process of converting data encoded with an $[n^{ I}, k^{ I}]$ code into data encoded with an $[{n^{ F}}, {k^{ F}}]$ code while maintaining desired decodability properties. We then introduce convertible codes, a new class of codes that allow for code conversions in a resource-efficient manner. This paper begins the study on convertible codes by focusing on linear MDS codes and the access cost of conversion. We derive a lower bound on the access cost of conversion and present an explicit optimal construction matching this bound for an important subclass of conversions. Additionally, we propose constructions with low field-size requirement for a broad subset of parameters. This paper investigates the problem of correcting multiple criss-cross insertions and deletions in arrays. More precisely, we study the unique recovery of $n \times n$ arrays affected by ${t}$ -criss-cross deletions defined as any combination of ${t_{\mathrm {r}}}$ row and ${t_{\mathrm {c}}}$ column deletions such that ${t_{\mathrm {r}}}+ {t_{\mathrm {c}}}= {t}$ for a given $t$. We show an equivalence between correcting ${t}$ -criss-cross deletions and ${t}$ -criss-cross insertions and show that a code correcting ${t}$ -criss-cross insertions/deletions has redundancy at least ${t} n + {t}\log n - \log ({t}!)$. Then, we present an existential construction of a ${t}$ -criss-cross insertion/deletion correcting code with redundancy bounded from above by ${t} n + \mathcal {O}({t}^{2} \log ^{2} n)$. The main ingredients of the presented code construction are systematic binary ${t}$ -deletion correcting codes and Gabidulin codes. The first ingredient helps locating the indices of the inserted/deleted rows and columns, thus transforming the insertion/deletion-correction problem into a row/column erasure-correction problem which is then solved using the second ingredient. We study spatially coupled LDPC codes that allow access to sub-blocks much smaller than the full code block. Sub-block access is realized by a semi-global decoder that decodes a chosen target sub-block by only accessing the target, plus a prescribed number of helper sub-blocks adjacent in the code chain. This paper develops a theoretical methodology for analyzing the semi-global decoding performance of spatially coupled LDPC codes constructed from protographs. The main result shows that semi-global decoding thresholds can be derived from certain thresholds we define for the single-sub-block graph. These characterizing thresholds are also used for deriving lower bounds on the decoder’s performance over channels with variability across sub-blocks, which are motivated by applications in data storage. Motivated by the established notion of storage codes, we consider sets of infinite sequences over a finite alphabet such that every $k$ -tuple of consecutive entries is uniquely recoverable from its $l$ -neighborhood in the sequence. We address the problem of finding the maximum growth rate of the set, which we term capacity, as well as constructions of explicit families that approach the optimal rate. The techniques that we employ rely on the connection of this problem with constrained systems. In the second part of the paper we consider a modification of the problem wherein the entries in the sequence are viewed as random variables over a finite alphabet that follow some joint distribution, and the recovery condition requires that the Shannon entropy of the $k$ -tuple conditioned on its $l$ -neighborhood be bounded above by some $\epsilon >0$. We study properties of measures on infinite sequences that maximize the metric entropy under the recoverability condition. Drawing on tools from ergodic theory, we prove some properties of entropy-maximizing measures. In order to accommodate the ever-growing data from various, possibly independent, sources and the dynamic nature of data usage rates in practical applications, modern cloud data storage systems are required to be scalable, flexible, and heterogeneous. The recent rise of the blockchain technology is also moving various information systems towards decentralization to achieve high privacy at low costs. While codes with hierarchical locality have been intensively studied in the context of centralized cloud storage due to their effectiveness in reducing the average reading time, those for decentralized storage networks (DSNs) have not yet been discussed. In this paper, we propose a joint coding scheme where each node receives extra protection through the cooperation with nodes in its neighborhood in a heterogeneous DSN with any given topology. This work extends and subsumes our prior work on coding for centralized cloud storage. In particular, our proposed construction not only preserves desirable properties such as scalability and flexibility, which are critical in dynamic networks, but also adapts to arbitrary topologies, a property that is essential in DSNs but has been overlooked in existing works. For the recently developed quasi-reversible BCH codes with long lengths and high error-correcting capability, this paper is aimed at proposing a new and faster decoding procedure. It consists of four steps: 1) compute the consecutive syndromes; 2) calculate the syndrome functions by the forward and backward recursions; 3) solve a linear subsystem together with one matrix multiplication in order to find an error-locator polynomial; 4) determine the errors from the obtained polynomial by using the root-finding algorithm. This procedure, especially in Steps 2 and 3, differs greatly from the conventional procedures, which determine an error-locator polynomial directly from solving a linear system with the aid of the consecutive syndromes. The key idea behind this decoding technique is that the computational complexity of such a small subsystem instead of an originally large linear system can be significantly reduced, although there are additional forward and backward syndrome calculations with low complexity increasing. Finally, the illustrative examples and numerical simulations can be helpful to demonstrate the accuracy and efficacy of the presented decoding technique at different error-correcting capabilities. A $((k,n))$ quantum threshold secret sharing (QTS) scheme is a quantum cryptographic protocol for sharing a quantum secret among $n$ parties such that the secret can be recovered by any $k$ or more parties while $k-1$ or fewer parties have no information about the secret. Despite extensive research on these schemes, there has been very little study on optimizing the quantum communication cost during recovery. Recently, we initiated the study of communication efficient quantum threshold secret sharing (CE-QTS) schemes. These schemes reduce the communication complexity in QTS schemes by accessing $d>k$ parties for recovery; here $d$ is fixed ahead of encoding the secret. In contrast to the standard QTS schemes which require $k$ qudits for recovering each qudit in the secret, these schemes have a lower communication cost of $\frac {d}{d-k+1}$. In this paper, we further develop the theory of communication efficient quantum threshold schemes. Here, we propose universal CE-QTS schemes which reduce the communication cost for all $d>k$ simultaneously. We provide a framework based on ramp quantum secret sharing to construct CE-QTS and universal CE-QTS schemes. We give another construction for universal CE-QTS schemes based on Staircase codes. We derived a lower bound on communication complexity and show that our constructions are optimal. In this paper we consider the diversity-multiplexing gain tradeoff (DMT) of so-called minimum delay asymmetric space-time codes for the $n \times m$ MIMO channel. Such codes correspond to lattices in $M_{n}(\mathbb {C})$ with dimension smaller than $2n^{2}$. Currently, very little is known about their DMT, except in the case $m=1$ , corresponding to the multiple input single output (MISO) channel. Further, apart from the MISO case, no DMT optimal asymmetric codes are known. We first discuss previous criteria used to analyze the DMT of space-time codes and comment on why these methods fail when applied to asymmetric codes. We then consider two special classes of asymmetric codes where the code-words are restricted to either real or quaternion matrices. We prove two separate diversity-multiplexing gain trade-off (DMT) upper bounds for such codes and provide a criterion for a lattice code to achieve these upper bounds. We also show that lattice codes based on $\mathbb {Q}$ -central division algebras satisfy this optimality criterion. As a corollary this result provides a DMT classification for all $\mathbb {Q}$ -central division algebra codes that are based on standard embeddings. While the $\mathbb {Q}$ -central division algebra based codes achieve the largest possible DMT of a code restricted to either real or quaternion space, they still fall short of the optimal DMT apart from the MISO case. This paper investigates the Gaussian state-dependent interference channel (IC) and Z-IC, in which two receivers are corrupted respectively by two different but correlated states that are noncausally known to two transmitters but are unknown to the receivers. Three interference regimes are studied, and the capacity region boundary or the sum capacity boundary is characterized either fully or partially under various channel parameters. In particular, the impact of the correlation between states on cancellation of state and interference as well as achievability of capacity is explored with numerical illustrations. For the very strong interference regime, the capacity region is achieved by the scheme where the two transmitters implement a cooperative dirty paper coding. For the strong but not very strong interference regime, the sum-rate capacity is characterized by rate splitting, layered dirty paper coding, and successive cancellation. For the weak interference regime, the sum-rate capacity is achieved via dirty paper coding individually at two receivers as well as treating interference as noise. Information-theoretic security is considered in the paradigm of network coding in the presence of wiretappers, who can access one arbitrary edge subset up to a certain size, also referred to as the security level. Secure network coding is applied to prevent the leakage of the source information to the wiretappers. In this paper, we consider the problem of secure network coding when the information rate and the security level can change over time. To efficiently solve this problem, we put forward local-encoding-preserving secure network coding, where a family of secure linear network codes (SLNCs) is called local-encoding-preserving if all the SLNCs in this family share a common local encoding kernel at each intermediate node in the network. We first consider the design of a family of local-encoding-preserving SLNCs for a fixed security level and a flexible rate. A simple approach is presented for efficiently constructing upon an SLNC that exists a local-encoding-preserving SLNC with the same security level and the rate reduced by one. By applying this approach repeatedly, we can obtain a family of local-encoding-preserving SLNCs with a fixed security level and multiple rates. We further consider the design of a family of local-encoding-preserving SLNCs for a fixed rate and a flexible security level. We present a novel and efficient approach for constructing upon an SLNC that exists a local-encoding-preserving SLNC with the same rate and the security level increased by one. Next, we consider the design of a family of local-encoding-preserving SLNCs for a fixed dimension (equal to the sum of rate and security level) and a flexible pair of rate and security level. We propose another novel approach for designing an SLNC such that the same SLNC can be applied for all the rate and security-level pairs with the fixed dimension. Also, two polynomial-time algorithms are developed for efficient implementations of the later two proposed approaches, respectively. Furthermore, we prove that all our three approaches do not incur any penalty on the required field size for the existence of SLNCs in terms of the best known lower bound by Guang and Yeung. Finally, we consider the ultimate problem of designing a family of local-encoding-preserving SLNCs that can be applied to all possible pairs of rate and security level. By combining the constructions of the three families of local-encoding-preserving SLNCs in the paper in suitable ways, we can obtain a family of local-encoding-preserving SLNCs that can be applied for all possible pairs of rate and security level. This paper investigates the problem of secure communication in a wireline noiseless scenario where a source wishes to communicate to a number of destinations in the presence of a passive external adversary. Different from the multicast scenario, where all destinations are interested in receiving the same message, in this setting different destinations are interested in different messages. The main focus of this paper is on characterizing the secure capacity region, when the adversary has unbounded computational capabilities, but limited network presence. Towards this end, an outer bound on the secure capacity region is derived, and secure transmission schemes are designed and analyzed in terms of achieved rate performance. It is first shown that, for the case of two destinations, the designed scheme matches the outer bound, hence characterizing the secure capacity region. Then, a particular class of networks referred to as two-layer networks is considered, where the source communicates with the destinations by hopping information through one layer of relays. It is shown that the designed scheme is indeed capacity achieving for any two-layer network for which one of the following three conditions is satisfied: (i) the number of destinations is three, (ii) the number of edges eavesdropped by the adversary is one, (iii) the min-cut capacities assume specific values. It is also shown that two-layer networks can be used to model and study a more general class of networks, referred to as separable. The key feature of separable networks is that they can be partitioned into edge disjoint networks that satisfy specific min-cut properties. In particular, it is proved that the secure capacity region of any separable network can be characterized from the secure capacity region of the corresponding two-layer network. Finally, for an arbitrary network topology, a two-phase scheme is designed and its rate performance is compared with the capacity-achieving scheme for networks with two destinations. This paper studies properties of binary runlength-limited sequences with additional constraints on their Hamming weight and/or their number of runs of identical symbols. An algebraic and a probabilistic (entropic) characterization of the exponential growth rate of the number of such sequences, i.e., their information capacity, are obtained by using the methods of multivariate analytic combinatorics, and properties of the capacity as a function of its parameters are stated. The second-order term in the asymptotic expansion of the rate of these sequences is also given, and the typical values of the relevant quantities are derived. Several applications of the results are illustrated, including bounds on codes for weight-preserving and run-preserving channels (e.g., the run-preserving insertion-deletion channel), a sphere-packing bound for channels with sparse error patterns, and the asymptotics of constant-weight sub-block constrained sequences. Coded computation techniques provide robustness against straggling workers in distributed computing. However, most of the existing schemes require exact provisioning of the straggling behavior and ignore the computations carried out by straggling workers. Moreover, these schemes are typically designed to recover the desired computation results accurately, while in many machine learning and iterative optimization algorithms, faster approximate solutions are known to result in an improvement in the overall convergence time. In this paper, we first introduce a novel coded matrix-vector multiplication scheme, called coded computation with partial recovery (CCPR), which benefits from the advantages of both coded and uncoded computation schemes, and reduces both the computation time and the decoding complexity by allowing a trade-off between the accuracy and the speed of computation. We then extend this approach to distributed implementation of more general computation tasks by proposing a coded communication scheme with partial recovery, where the results of subtasks computed by the workers are coded before being communicated. Numerical simulations on a large linear regression task confirm the benefits of the proposed scheme in terms of the trade-off between the computation accuracy and latency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new family of codes, called clustering-correcting codes, is presented in this paper. This family of codes is motivated by the special structure of the data that is stored in DNA-based storage systems. The data stored in these systems has the form of unordered sequences, also called strands, and every strand is synthesized thousands to millions of times, where some of these copies are read back during sequencing. Due to the unordered structure of the strands, an important task in the decoding process is to place them in their correct order. This is usually accomplished by allocating part of the strand for an index. However, in the presence of errors in the index field, important information on the order of the strands may be lost. Clustering-correcting codes ensure that if the distance between the index fields of two strands is small, their data fields have large distance. It is shown how this property enables to place the strands together in their correct clusters even in the presence of errors. We present lower and upper bounds on the size of clustering-correcting codes and an explicit construction of these codes which uses only a single symbol of redundancy. Just as rank-metric or Gabidulin codes may be used to construct rate–diversity tradeoff optimal space–time codes, a recently introduced generalization for the sum-rank metric—linearized Reed–Solomon codes—accomplishes the same in the case of multiple fading blocks. In this paper, we provide the first explicit construction of minimal delay rate–diversity optimal multiblock space–time codes as an application of linearized Reed–Solomon codes. We also provide sequential decoders for these codes and, more generally, space–time codes constructed from finite field codes. Simulation results show that the proposed codes can outperform full diversity codes based on cyclic division algebras at low SNRs as well as utilize significantly smaller constellations. A functional PIR array code is a coding scheme which encodes some $s$ information bits into a $t\times m$ array such that every linear combination of the $s$ information bits has $k$ mutually disjoint recovering sets. Every recovering set consists of some of the array’s columns while it is allowed to read at most $\ell $ encoded bits from every column in order to receive the requested linear combination of the information bits. Functional batch array codes impose a stronger property where every multiset request of $k$ linear combinations has $k$ mutually disjoint recovering sets. Locality functional array codes demand that the size of every recovering set is restrained to be at most $r$. Given the values of $s, k, t, \ell,r$ , the goal of this paper is to study the optimal value of the number of columns $m$ such that these codes exist.
