Most codes with an algebraic decoding algorithm are derived from Reed-Solomon codes. They are obtained by taking equivalent codes, for example, generalized Reed-Solomon codes, or by using the so-called subfield subcode method, which leads to alternant codes over the underlying prime field, or over some intermediate subfield. The main advantage of these constructions is to preserve both the minimum distance and the decoding algorithm of the underlying Reed-Solomon code. In this paper, we explore in detail the subspace subcodes construction. This kind of codes was already studied in the particular case of cyclic Reed-Solomon codes. We extend this approach to any linear code over the extension of a finite field. We are interested in additive codes who are deeply connected to subfield subcodes. We characterize the duals of subspace subcodes. We introduce the notion of generalized subspace subcodes. We apply our results to generalized Reed-Solomon codes which leads to codes with interesting parameters, especially over a large alphabet. To conclude this paper, we discuss the security of the use of generalized subspace subcodes of Reed-Solomon codes in a cryptographic context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Symbol-pair codes were introduced by Cassuto and Blaum in 2010 to protect pair errors in symbol-pair read channels. Recently Yaakobi, Bruck and Siegel (2016) generalized this notion to b-symbol codes in order to consider consecutive b errors for a prescribed integer b ≥ 2, and they gave constructions and decoding algorithms. Cyclic codes were considered by various authors as candidates for symbol-pair codes and they established minimum distance bounds on (certain) cyclic codes. In this paper we use algebraic curves over finite fields in order to obtain tight lower and upper bounds on b-symbol Hamming weights of arbitrary cyclic codes over Fq. Here b ≥ 2 is an arbitrary prescribed positive integer and Fq is an arbitrary finite field. We also present a stability theorem for an arbitrary cyclic code C of dimension k and length n: the b-symbol Hamming weight enumerator of C is the same as the k-symbol Hamming weight enumerator of C if k ≤ b ≤ n−1. Moreover, we give improved tight lower and upper bounds on b-symbol Hamming weights of some cyclic codes related to irreducible cyclic codes. Throughout the paper the length n is coprime to q. The binary quadratic-residue codes and the punctured Reed-Muller codes ${\mathcal {R}}_{2}((m-1)/2, m))$ are two families of binary cyclic codes with parameters $[n, (n+1)/2, d \geq \sqrt {n}]$. These two families of binary cyclic codes are interesting partly due to the fact that their minimum distances have a square-root bound. The objective of this paper is to construct two families of binary cyclic codes of length $2^{m}-1$ and dimension near $2^{m-1}$ with good minimum distances. When $m \geq 3$ is odd, the codes become a family of duadic codes with parameters $[2^{m}-1, 2^{m-1}, d]$ , where $d \geq 2^{(m-1)/2}+1$ if $m \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$ and $d \geq 2^{(m-1)/2}+3$ if $m \equiv 1 \pmod {4}$. Following the very recent studies on \mathbb Z2\mathbb Z4 -additive codes, \mathbb Z2\mathbb Z2[u] -linear codes have been introduced by Aydogdu et al. In this paper, we introduce and study the algebraic structure of cyclic, constacyclic codes and their duals over the R -module \mathbb {Z}_{2}^\alpha R^\beta where R=\mathbb {Z}_{2}+u\mathbb {Z}_{2}=\left \{{0,1,u,u+1}\right \} is the ring with four elements and u^2=0 . We determine the generating independent sets and the types and sizes of both such codes and their duals. Finally, we present a bound and an optimal family of codes attaining this bound and also give some illustrative examples of binary codes that have good parameters which are obtained from the cyclic codes in \mathbb Z_2^\alpha R^\beta . The square $C^{*2}$ of a linear error correcting code $C$ is the linear code spanned by the component-wise products of every pair of (non-necessarily distinct) words in $C$. Squares of codes have gained attention for several applications mainly in the area of cryptography, and typically in those applications, one is concerned about some of the parameters (dimension and minimum distance) of both $C^{*2}$ and $C$. In this paper, motivated mostly by the study of this problem in the case of linear codes defined over the binary field, squares of cyclic codes are considered. General results on the minimum distance of the squares of cyclic codes are obtained, and constructions of cyclic codes $C$ with a relatively large dimension of $C$ and minimum distance of the square $C^{*2}$ are discussed. In some cases, the constructions lead to codes $C$ such that both $C$ and $C^{*2}$ simultaneously have the largest possible minimum distances for their length and dimensions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we consider the list decoding property of codes under insertion and deletion errors (insdel for short). Firstly, we analyse the list decodability of random insdel codes. Our result provides a more complete picture on the list decodability of insdel codes when both insertion and deletion errors happen. Secondly, we construct a family of insdel codes along with their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms through concatenation method which provides a Zyablov-type bound for insdel metric codes. Codes over Galois rings have been studied extensively during the last three decades. Negacyclic codes over \mathop \mathrm GR\nolimits (2^a,m) of length 2^s have been characterized: the ring \mathcal R2(a,m,-1)= {\mathrm{ GR}}(2^{a},m)[x]/\langle x^{2^{s}}+1\rangle is a chain ring. Furthermore, these results have been generalized to \lambda -constacyclic codes for any unit \lambda of the form 4z-1 , . In this paper, we study more general cases and investigate all cases, where {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma) = {\mathrm{ GR}}(p^{a},m)[x]/\langle x^{p^{s}}-\gamma \rangle is a chain ring. In particular, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the ring {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma) to be a chain ring are obtained. In addition, by using this structure we investigate all \gamma -constacyclic codes over \mathop {\mathrm {GR}}\nolimits (p^{a},m) when {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma)$ is a chain ring. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of self-orthogonal and self-dual \gamma$ -constacyclic codes are also provided. Locally repairable codes (LRCs) are a class of codes designed for the local correction of erasures. They have received considerable attention in recent years due to their applications in distributed storage. Most existing results on LRCs do not explicitly take into consideration the field size $q$ , i.e., the size of the code alphabet. In particular, for the binary case, only a few results are known. In this paper, we present an upper bound on the minimum distance $d$ of linear LRCs with availability, based on the work of Cadambe and Mazumdar. The bound takes into account the code length $n$ , dimension $k$ , locality $r$ , availability $t$ , and field size $q$ . Then, we study the binary linear LRCs in three aspects. First, we focus on analyzing the locality of some classical codes, i.e., cyclic codes and Reed–Muller codes, and their modified versions, which are obtained by applying the operations of extend, shorten, expurgate, augment, and lengthen. Next, we construct LRCs using phantom parity-check symbols and multi-level tensor product structure, respectively. Compared with other previous constructions of binary LRCs with fixed locality or minimum distance, our construction is much more flexible in terms of code parameters, and gives various families of high-rate LRCs, some of which are shown to be optimal with respect to their minimum distance. Finally, the availability of LRCs is studied. We investigate the locality and availability properties of several classes of one-step majority-logic decodable codes, including cyclic simplex codes, cyclic difference-set codes, and 4-cycle free regular low-density parity-check codes. A ${\mathbb {Z}}_{2}{\mathbb {Z}}_{4}$ -additive code ${\mathcal{ C}}\subseteq {\mathbb {Z}}_{2}^\alpha \times {\mathbb {Z}}_{4}^\beta $ is called cyclic if the set of coordinates can be partitioned into two subsets, the set of ${\mathbb {Z}}_{2}$ coordinates and the set of ${\mathbb {Z}}_{4}$ coordinates, such that any cyclic shift of the coordinates of both subsets leaves the code invariant. Let $\Phi ({\mathcal{ C}})$ be the binary Gray map image of ${\mathcal{ C}}$. We study the rank and the dimension of the kernel of a ${\mathbb {Z}}_{2} {\mathbb {Z}}_{4} $ -additive cyclic code ${\mathcal{ C}}$ , that is, the dimensions of the binary linear codes $\langle \Phi ({\mathcal{ C}}) \rangle $ and $\ker (\Phi ({\mathcal{ C}}))$. We give upper and lower bounds for these parameters. It is known that the codes $\langle \Phi ({\mathcal{ C}}) \rangle $ and $\ker (\Phi ({\mathcal{ C}}))$ are binary images of ${\mathbb {Z}}_{2} {\mathbb {Z}}_{4}$ -additive codes that we denote by ${\mathcal{ R}}({\mathcal{ C}})$ and ${\mathcal{ K}}({\mathcal{ C}})$ , respectively. The projective special linear group ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$ is 2-transitive for all primes $n$ and 3-homogeneous for $n \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$ on the set $\{0,1, \ldots, n-1, \infty \}$. It is known that the extended odd-like quadratic residue codes are invariant under ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. Hence, the extended quadratic residue codes hold an infinite family of 2-designs for primes $n \equiv 1 \pmod {4}$ , an infinite family of 3-designs for primes $n \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$. To construct more $t$ -designs with $t \in \{2, 3\}$ , one would search for other extended cyclic codes over finite fields that are invariant under the action of ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. The objective of this paper is to prove that the extended quadratic residue binary codes are the only nontrivial extended binary cyclic codes that are invariant under ${\mathrm {PSL}}_{2}(n)$. We study the codes of the title by the CRT method, that decomposes such codes into constituent codes, which are shorter codes over larger alphabets. Criteria on these constituent codes for self-duality and linear complementary duality of the decomposed codes are derived. The special class of the one-generator codes is given a polynomial representation and exactly enumerated. In particular, we present some illustrative examples of binary optimal linear codes with respect to the Griesmer bound derived from the $\mathbb {Z}_{2} \mathbb {Z}_{4}$ -additive quasi-cyclic codes. The dual of the Kasami code of length $q^{2}-1$ , with $q$ a power of 2, is constructed by concatenating a cyclic MDS code of length $q+1$ over $F_{q}$ with a Simplex code of length $q-1$. This yields a new derivation of the weight distribution of the Kasami code, a new description of its coset graph, and a new proof that the Kasami code is completely regular. The automorphism groups of the Kasami code and the related $q$ -ary MDS code are determined. New cyclic completely regular codes over finite fields a power of 2, generalized Kasami codes, are constructed; they have coset graphs isomorphic to that of the Kasami codes. Another wide class of completely regular codes, including additive codes, as well as unrestricted codes, is obtained by combining cosets of the Kasami or generalized Kasami code. A general criterion to obtain $s$ -PD-sets of minimum size $s+1$ for partial permutation decoding, which enable correction up to $s$ errors, for systematic codes over a finite field ${ {F}}_{q}$ and ${ {Z}}_{4}$ -linear codes is provided. We show how this technique can be easily applied to linear cyclic codes over ${ {F}}_{q}$ , ${ {Z}}_{4}$ -linear codes which are the Gray map image of a quaternary linear cyclic code, and some related codes such as quasi-cyclic codes. Furthermore, specific results for some linear and nonlinear binary codes, including simplex, Kerdock, Delsarte-Goethals, and extended dualized Kerdock codes are given. Finally, applying this technique, new $s$ -PD-sets of size $s+1$ for ${ {Z}}_{4}$ -linear Hadamard codes of type $2^\gamma 4^\delta $ , for all $\delta \geq 4$ and $1< s\leq 2^\delta -3$ ; and for ${ {Z}}_{4}$ -linear simplex codes of type $4^{m}$ , for all $m\geq 2$ and $1< s\leq 2^{m+1}-3$ , are also provided.
