Symbol-pair codes were introduced by Cassuto and Blaum in 2010 to protect pair errors in symbol-pair read channels. Recently Yaakobi, Bruck and Siegel (2016) generalized this notion to b-symbol codes in order to consider consecutive b errors for a prescribed integer b ≥ 2, and they gave constructions and decoding algorithms. Cyclic codes were considered by various authors as candidates for symbol-pair codes and they established minimum distance bounds on (certain) cyclic codes. In this paper we use algebraic curves over finite fields in order to obtain tight lower and upper bounds on b-symbol Hamming weights of arbitrary cyclic codes over Fq. Here b ≥ 2 is an arbitrary prescribed positive integer and Fq is an arbitrary finite field. We also present a stability theorem for an arbitrary cyclic code C of dimension k and length n: the b-symbol Hamming weight enumerator of C is the same as the k-symbol Hamming weight enumerator of C if k ≤ b ≤ n−1. Moreover, we give improved tight lower and upper bounds on b-symbol Hamming weights of some cyclic codes related to irreducible cyclic codes. Throughout the paper the length n is coprime to q. In this paper we prove several coordinate-ordering-free upper bounds on the insdel distances of linear codes. Our bounds are stronger than some previous known bounds. We apply these upper bounds to AGFC codes from some cyclic codes and one algebraic-geometric code with any rearrangement of coordinate positions. A strong upper bound on the insdel distances of Reed-Muller codes with the special coordinate ordering is also given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a special subclass of cyclic codes, BCH codes have wide applications in communication and storage systems. A BCH code of length $n$ over $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ is always relative to an $n$ -th primitive root of unity $\beta $ in an extension field of $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ , and is called a dually-BCH code if its dual is also a BCH code relative to the same $\beta $. The question as to whether a BCH code is a dually-BCH code is in general very hard to answer. In this paper, an answer to this question for primitive narrow-sense BCH codes and projective narrow-sense ternary BCH codes is given. Sufficient and necessary conditions in terms of the designed distances $\delta $ will be presented to ensure that these BCH codes are dually-BCH codes. In addition, the parameters of the primitive narrow-sense BCH codes and their dual codes are investigated. Some lower bounds on minimum distances of the dual codes of primitive and projective narrow-sense BCH codes are developed. Especially for binary primitive narrow-sense BCH codes, the new bounds on the minimum distances of the dual codes improve the classical Sidel’nikov bound, and are also better than the Carlitz and Uchiyama bound for large designed distances $\delta $. Given a ${q}$ -ary frequency hopping sequence set of length ${n}$ and size ${M}$ with Hamming correlation ${H}$ , one can obtain a ${q}$ -ary (nonlinear) cyclic code of length ${n}$ and size nM with Hamming distance n-H. Thus, every upper bound on the size of a code from coding theory gives an upper bound on the size of a frequency hopping sequence set. Indeed, all upper bounds from coding theory have been converted to upper bounds on frequency hopping sequence sets. On the other hand, a lower bound from coding theory does not automatically produce a lower bound for frequency hopping sequence sets. In particular, the most important lower bound, the Gilbert-Varshamov bound in coding theory, has not been transformed to a valid lower bound on frequency hopping sequence sets. The purpose of this paper is to transform the Gilbert-Varshamov bound from coding theory to frequency hopping sequence sets by establishing a connection between a special family of cyclic codes (which are called hopping cyclic codes in this paper) and frequency hopping sequence sets. We provide two proofs of the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. One is based on a probabilistic method that requires advanced tool–martingale. This proof covers the whole rate region. In this paper, we provide two complementary results for cyclic codes of composite length. First, we give a general construction of cyclic codes of length nr from cyclic codes of length n and a lower bound on the minimum distance. Numerical data show that many cyclic codes of composite length with the best parameters can be obtained in this way. Second, in the other direction, we show that for cyclic codes of length n with a primitive n-th root of unity as a non-zero, the minimum distance is roughly bounded by the square-free part of n. This means that we shall not expect good cyclic codes of length n in general if, for example, the length n is divisible by a high power of a prime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Symbol-pair codes introduced by Cassuto and Blaum (2010) are designed to protect against pair errors in symbol-pair read channels. The higher the minimum pair distance, the more pair errors the code can correct. Maximum distance separable (MDS) symbol-pair codes are optimal in the sense that pair distance cannot be improved for given length and code size. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we present three lower bounds for the minimum pair distance of constacyclic codes, the first two of which generalize the previously known results due to Cassuto and Blaum (2011) and Kai et al. (2015). The third one exhibits a lower bound for the minimum pair distance of repeated-root cyclic codes. Codes over Galois rings have been studied extensively during the last three decades. Negacyclic codes over \mathop \mathrm GR\nolimits (2^a,m) of length 2^s have been characterized: the ring \mathcal R2(a,m,-1)= {\mathrm{ GR}}(2^{a},m)[x]/\langle x^{2^{s}}+1\rangle is a chain ring. Furthermore, these results have been generalized to \lambda -constacyclic codes for any unit \lambda of the form 4z-1 , . In this paper, we study more general cases and investigate all cases, where {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma) = {\mathrm{ GR}}(p^{a},m)[x]/\langle x^{p^{s}}-\gamma \rangle is a chain ring. In particular, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the ring {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma) to be a chain ring are obtained. In addition, by using this structure we investigate all \gamma -constacyclic codes over \mathop {\mathrm {GR}}\nolimits (p^{a},m) when {\mathcal{ R}}_{p}(a,m,\gamma)$ is a chain ring. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of self-orthogonal and self-dual \gamma$ -constacyclic codes are also provided. The Rosenbloom–Tsfasman metric has attracted the attention of many researchers as a generalization of the Hamming metric that is relevant to practical problems. Codes for this metric were considered. In particular, Reed–Solomon codes were generalized to be compatible with this metric. In this paper, a generalization of BCH codes for the Rosenbloom–Tsfasman metric is proposed. This generalization is based on considering BCH codes as subfield subcodes of Reed–Solomon codes. By characterizing these subfield subcodes, an explicit construction of BCH codes for the Rosenbloom–Tsfasman metric is provided. Two important properties of Reed–Solomon codes and BCH codes for the Rosenbloom–Tsfasman metric are studied and compared with those for the Hamming metric. In this paper, we consider optimal q -ary cyclic constant-weight codes of length n , minimum distance d , and weight w codes. We introduce the pure and mixed difference method to present a combinatorial description for a cyclic (n,d,w)_{q} code and then obtain some tight upper bounds on the sizes of optimal cyclic (n,d,w)_{q} codes. Cyclic codes with a few weights are very useful in the design of frequency hopping sequences and the development of secret sharing schemes. In this paper, we mainly use Gauss sums to represent the Hamming weights of cyclic codes whose duals have two zeroes. A lower bound of the minimum Hamming distance is determined. In some cases, we give the Hamming weight distributions of the cyclic codes. In particular, we obtain a class of three-weight optimal cyclic codes achieving the Griesmer bound, which generalizes a Vega’s result, and several classes of cyclic codes with a few weights, which solve an open problem proposed by Vega. Symbol-pair read channels, in which the outputs of the read process are pairs of consecutive symbols, were recently studied by Cassuto and Blaum. This new paradigm is motivated by the limitations of the reading process in high density data storage systems. They studied error correction in this new paradigm, specifically, the relationship between the minimum Hamming distance of an error correcting code and the minimum pair distance, which is the minimum Hamming distance between symbol-pair vectors derived from codewords of the code. It was proved that for a linear cyclic code with minimum Hamming distance dH , the corresponding minimum pair distance is at least dH+3 . In this paper, we show that, for a given linear cyclic code with a minimum Hamming distance dH , the minimum pair distance is at least dH +\left \lceil{ {dH/{2}}}\right \rceil . We then describe a decoding algorithm, based upon a bounded distance decoder for the cyclic code, whose symbol-pair error correcting capabilities reflect the larger minimum pair distance. Finally, we consider the case where the read channel output is a larger number, $b \geqslant 3$ , of consecutive symbols, and we provide extensions of several concepts, results, and code constructions to this setting. The generalized Hamming weights dr(C) of a linear code C are a natural generalization of the minimum Hamming distance d(C)[=d_{1}(C)] and have become an important research object in coding theory since Wei’s originary work in 1991. In this paper, two general formulas on dr(C) for irreducible cyclic codes are presented using Gauss sums and the weight hierarchy \{d_{1}(C), d_{2}(C), \ldots , d_{k}(C)\}~(k=\dim C)$ is completely determined for several cases.
