We consider the problem of communicating over a channel that randomly “tears” the message block into small pieces of different sizes and shuffles them. For the binary torn-paper channel with block length $n$ and pieces of length ${\mathrm{ Geometric}}(p_{n})$ , we characterize the capacity as $C = e^{-\alpha }$ , where $\alpha = \lim _{n\to \infty } p_{n} \log n$. Our results show that the case of ${\mathrm{ Geometric}}(p_{n})$ -length fragments and the case of deterministic length- $(1/p_{n})$ fragments are qualitatively different and, surprisingly, the capacity of the former is larger. Intuitively, this is due to the fact that, in the random fragments case, large fragments are sometimes observed, which boosts the capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The “carbon copy onto dirty paper” (CCDP) channel is the compound “writing on dirty paper” channel in which the channel output is obtained as the sum of the channel input, white Gaussian noise and a Gaussian state sequence randomly selected among a set possible realizations. The transmitter has non-causal knowledge of the set of possible state sequences but does not know which sequence is selected to produce the channel output. We study the capacity of the CCDP channel for two scenarios: 1) the state sequences are independent and identically distributed; and 2) the state sequences are scaled versions of the same sequence. In the first scenario, we show that a combination of superposition coding, time-sharing, and Gel’fand-Pinsker binning is sufficient to approach the capacity to within 3 bits per channel use for any number of possible state realizations. In the second scenario, we derive capacity to within 4 bits per channel use for the case of two possible state sequences. This result is extended to the CCDP channel with any number of possible state sequences under certain conditions on the scaling parameters, which we denote as “strong fading” regime. This paper investigates the Gaussian state-dependent interference channel (IC) and Z-IC, in which two receivers are corrupted respectively by two different but correlated states that are noncausally known to two transmitters but are unknown to the receivers. Three interference regimes are studied, and the capacity region boundary or the sum capacity boundary is characterized either fully or partially under various channel parameters. In particular, the impact of the correlation between states on cancellation of state and interference as well as achievability of capacity is explored with numerical illustrations. For the very strong interference regime, the capacity region is achieved by the scheme where the two transmitters implement a cooperative dirty paper coding. For the strong but not very strong interference regime, the sum-rate capacity is characterized by rate splitting, layered dirty paper coding, and successive cancellation. For the weak interference regime, the sum-rate capacity is achieved via dirty paper coding individually at two receivers as well as treating interference as noise. In wireless networks, the link connectivity may be intermittent due to shadowing, burstiness of data arrival, or uncoordinated resource allocation. In this paper, we model the intermittence of links as Bernoulli distributed random channel states, termed intermittence channel states, and study the impact of the corresponding channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel (BC). Moreover, due to the heterogeneous timeliness of intermittence channel states, the CSIT considered in this paper is hybrid. More specifically, the CSIT of each link can be perfectly (causally or non-causally) available, delayed, or not available. When the links are connected, we adopt a general setting that the received signal-to-noise ratios can be different. Our contribution is the characterization of the capacity regions of intermittent Gaussian BC to within bounded gaps for all combinations of hybrid CSIT, except for scenario DN (delayed CSIT of receiver 1, no CSIT of receiver 2). For scenario DN, we propose an opportunistic physical layer network coding scheme that achieves a strictly larger degree-of-freedom (DoF) region than the no-CSIT DoF region. As a corollary, single-user CSIT is able to increase the sum DoF for intermittent Gaussian BC (also the capacity region for the erasure BC, as a by-product). This result is in sharp contrast to the recent negative result by Davoodi and Jafar, where it is shown that for fast-fading multiple-input single-output BC with continuous channel states, single-user CSIT does not help at all in terms of sum DoF. The state-dependent Gaussian interference channel (IC) and Z-IC are investigated, in which two receivers are corrupted by the same but differently scaled states. The state sequence is noncausally known at both transmitters, but not known at either receiver. Three interference regimes are studied, i.e., the very strong, strong, and weak regimes. In the very strong regime, the capacity region is characterized under certain channel parameters by designing a cooperative dirty paper coding between the two transmitters to fully cancel the state. In the strong regime, points on the capacity region boundary are characterized under certain channel parameters by designing an achievable scheme based on rate splitting, layered dirty paper coding, and successive state cancellation. In the weak regime, the sum capacity is obtained by independent dirty paper coding at two transmitters. For all the above regimes, the capacity achieves that of the IC/Z-IC without state. Comparison between the state-dependent regular IC and the Z-IC suggests that even with one interference-free link, the Z-IC does not necessarily perform better, because dirty paper coded interference in the regular IC facilitates to cancel the state through the cooperative dirty paper coding between the transmitters. We investigate the state-dependent Gaussian wiretap channel with noncausal channel state information at the transmitter (GWTC-N-CSIT), and explore whether three strategies (i.e., taking action on the state, legitimate receiver’s channel output feedback, and combining the former two strategies together) help to enhance the secrecy capacity of the GWTC-N-CSIT. To be specific, we first determine the secrecy capacity of the GWTC-N-CSIT with noiseless feedback. Next, we derive lower and upper bounds on the secrecy capacity of the GWTC-N-CSIT with action-dependent state. Finally, we derive lower and upper bounds on the secrecy capacity of the GWTC-N-CSIT with both action-dependent state and noiseless feedback, and show that these bounds meet for a special case. Numerical results of this paper indicate that all three strategies enhance the secrecy capacity of the GWTC-N-CSIT. The state-dependent point-to-point Gaussian channel with a helper is first studied, in which a transmitter communicates with a receiver via a state-corrupted channel. The state is not known to the transmitter nor to the receiver, but known to a helper noncausally, which then wishes to assist the receiver to cancel the state. Differently from the previous work that characterized the capacity only in the infinite state power regime, this paper explores the general case with arbitrary state power. A lower bound on the capacity is derived based on an achievable scheme that integrates direct state subtraction and single-bin dirty paper coding. By analyzing this lower bound and further comparing it with the existing upper bounds, the capacity of the channel is characterized for a wide range of channel parameters. Such an idea of characterizing the capacity is further extended to study the two-user state-dependent multiple access channel with a helper. By comparing the derived inner and outer bounds, the channel parameters are partitioned into appropriate cases, and for each case, either segments on the capacity region boundary or the full capacity region are characterized. An additive white Gaussian noise energy-harvesting channel with an infinite-sized battery is considered. The energy arrival process is modeled as a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables. The channel capacity $\frac {1}{2}\log (1+P)$ is achievable by the so-called best-effort and save-and-transmit schemes where $P$ denotes the battery recharge rate. This paper analyzes the save-and-transmit scheme whose transmit power is strictly less than $P$ and the best-effort scheme as a special case of save-and-transmit without a saving phase. In the finite blocklength regime, we obtain new non-asymptotic achievable rates for these schemes that approach the capacity with gaps vanishing at rates proportional to $1/\sqrt {n}$ and $({(\log n)/n})^{1/2}$ respectively where $n$ denotes the blocklength. The proof technique involves analyzing the escape probability of a Markov process. When $P$ is sufficiently large, we show that allowing the transmit power to back off from $P$ can improve the performance for save-and-transmit. The results are extended to a block energy arrival model where the length of each energy block $L$ grows sublinearly in $n$. We show that the save-and-transmit and best-effort schemes achieve coding rates that approach the capacity with gaps vanishing at rates proportional to $\sqrt {L/n}$ and $({\max \{\log n, L\}/n})^{1/2}$ , respectively. This paper investigates the problem of coordinating several agents through their actions, focusing on an asymmetric observation structure with two agents. Specifically, one agent knows the past, present, and future realizations of a state that affects a common payoff function, while the other agent either knows the past realizations of nothing about the state. In both cases, the second agent is assumed to have strictly causal observations of the first agent’s actions, which enables the two agents to coordinate. These scenarios are applied to distributed power control; the key idea is that a transmitter may embed information about the wireless channel state into its transmit power levels so that an observation of these levels, e.g., the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, allows the other transmitter to coordinate its power levels. The main contributions of this paper are twofold. First, we provide a characterization of the set of feasible average payoffs when the agents repeatedly take long sequences of actions and the realizations of the system state are i.i.d.. Second, we exploit these results in the context of distributed power control and introduce the concept of coded power-control. We carry out an extensive numerical analysis of the benefits of coded power control over alternative power-control policies, and highlight a simple yet non-trivial example of a power control code. This paper focuses on the problem of separately modulating and jointly estimating two independent continuous-valued parameters sent over a Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC) under the mean square error (MSE) criterion without bandwidth constraints. To this end, we first improve an existing lower bound on the MSE that is obtained using the parameter modulation-estimation techniques for the single-user additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. As for the main contribution of this paper, this improved modulation-estimation analysis is generalized to the model of the two-user Gaussian MAC. We present outer bounds to the achievable region in the plane of the MSE’s of the two user parameters, which provides a trade-off between the MSE’s, where we used zero-rate lower bounds on the error probability of Gaussian channels by Shannon and Polyanskiy et al. Numerical results showed that, the multi-user adaptation of the zero-rate lower bound by Polyanskiy et al. provides a tighter overall lower bound on the MSE pairs than the classical Shannon bound. In addition, we introduced upper bounds on the MSE exponents, namely, the exponential decay rates of these MSE’s in the asymptotic regime of long blocks that could make use of any bound on the error exponent of a single-user AWGN channel. The obtained results are numerically evaluated for three different bounds on the reliability function of the Gaussian channel. It is shown that the adaptation of the reliability function by Ashikhmin et al. to the MAC provides a significantly tighter characterization than Shannon’s sphere-packing bound and the divergence bound. In the scalar dirty multiple-access channel, in addition to Gaussian noise, two additive interference signals are present, each known non-causally to a single transmitter. It was shown by Philosof et al. that for strong interferences, an independent identically distributed ensemble of codes does not achieve the capacity region. Rather, a structured-codes approach was presented that was shown to be optimal in the limit of high signal-to-noise ratios, where the sum capacity is dictated by the minimal (“bottleneck”) channel gain. In this paper, we consider the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) variant of this setting. In order to incorporate structured codes in this case, one can utilize matrix decompositions that transform the channel into effective parallel scalar dirty multiple-access channels. This approach, however, suffers from a “bottleneck” effect for each effective scalar channel and, therefore, the achievable rates strongly depend on the chosen decomposition. It is shown that a recently proposed decomposition, where the diagonals of the effective channel matrices are equal up to a scaling factor, is optimal at high signal-to-noise ratios, under an equal rank assumption. This paper studies a memoryless state-dependent multiple access channel (MAC) where two transmitters wish to convey a message to a receiver under the assumption of causal and imperfect channel state information at transmitters (CSIT) and imperfect channel state information at receiver (CSIR). In order to emphasize the limitation of transmitter cooperation between physically distributed nodes, we focus on the so-called distributed CSIT assumption, i.e., where each transmitter has its individual channel knowledge, while the message can be assumed to be partially or entirely shared a priori between transmitters by exploiting some on-board memory. Under this setup, the first part of the paper characterizes the common message capacity of the channel at hand for arbitrary CSIT and CSIR structure. The optimal scheme builds on Shannon strategies, i.e., optimal codes are constructed by letting the channel inputs be a function of current CSIT only. For a special case when CSIT is a deterministic function of CSIR, the considered scheme also achieves the capacity region of a common message and two private messages. The second part addresses an important instance of the previous general result in a context of a cooperative multi-antenna Gaussian channel under i.i.d. fading operating in frequency-division duplex mode, such that CSIT is acquired via an explicit feedback of perfect CSIR. The capacity of the channel at hand is achieved by distributed linear precoding applied to Gaussian codes. Surprisingly, we demonstrate that it is suboptimal to send a number of data streams bounded by the number of transmit antennas as typically considered in a centralized CSIT setup. This paper considers a real-time status update system in which an energy harvesting (EH)-powered transmitter node observes some physical process, and sends its sensed measurements in the form of status updates to a destination node. The status update and harvested energy packets are assumed to arrive at the transmitter according to independent Poisson processes, and the service time of each status update is assumed to be exponentially distributed. We quantify the freshness of status updates when they reach the destination using the concept of Age of Information (AoI). Unlike most of the existing analyses of AoI focusing on the evaluation of its average value when the transmitter is not subject to energy constraints, our analysis is focused on understanding the distributional properties of AoI through the characterization of its moment generating function (MGF). In particular, we use the stochastic hybrid systems (SHS) framework to derive closed-form expressions of the MGF of AoI under several queueing disciplines at the transmitter, including non-preemptive and preemptive in service/waiting strategies. Using these MGF results, we further obtain closed-form expressions for the first and second moments of AoI in each queueing discipline. We demonstrate the generality of this analysis by recovering several existing results for the corresponding system with no energy constraints as special cases of the new results. Our numerical results verify the analytical findings, and demonstrate the necessity of incorporating the higher moments of AoI in the implementation/optimization of real-time status update systems rather than just relying on its average value. Over the past decade, the bulk of wireless traffic has shifted from speech to content. This shift creates the opportunity to cache part of the content in memories closer to the end users, for example in base stations. Most previous paper focuses on the reduction of load in the backhaul and core networks due to caching, i.e., on the benefits caching offers for the wireline communication link between the origin servers and the caches. In this paper, we are instead interested in the benefits caching can offer for the wireless communication link between the caches and the end users. To quantify the gains of caching for this wireless link, we consider an interference channel in which each transmitter is equipped with an isolated cache memory. Communication takes place in two phases, a content placement phase followed by a content delivery phase. The objective is to design both the placement and the delivery phases to maximize the rate in the delivery phase in response to any possible user demands. Focusing on the three-user case, we show that through careful joint design of these phases, we can reap three distinct benefits from caching: a load balancing gain, an interference cancellation gain, and an interference alignment gain. In our proposed scheme, load balancing is achieved through a specific file splitting and placement, producing a particular pattern of content overlap at the caches. This overlap allows to implement interference cancellation. Furthermore, it allows us to create several virtual transmitters, each transmitting a part of the requested content, which increases interference-alignment possibilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the symmetric degrees of freedom (DoF) of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular networks with $G$ cells and $K$ users per cell, having $N$ antennas at each base station and $M$ antennas at each user. In particular, we investigate techniques for achievability that are based on either decomposition with asymptotic interference alignment or linear beamforming schemes and show that there are distinct regimes of $(G,K,M,N)$ , where one outperforms the other. We first note that both one-sided and two-sided decomposition with asymptotic interference alignment achieve the same DoF. We then establish specific antenna configurations under which the DoF achieved using decomposition-based schemes is optimal by deriving a set of outer bounds on the symmetric DoF. Using these results, we completely characterize the optimal DoF of any $G$ -cell network with single-antenna users. For linear beamforming schemes, we first focus on small networks and propose a structured approach to linear beamforming based on a notion called packing ratios. Packing ratio describes the interference footprint or shadow cast by a set of transmit beamformers and enables us to identify the underlying structures for aligning interference. Such a structured beamforming design can be shown to achieve the optimal spatially normalized DoF (sDoF) of two-cell two-user/cell network and the two-cell three-user/cell network. For larger networks, we develop an unstructured approach to linear interference alignment, where transmit beamformers are designed to satisfy conditions for interference alignment without explicitly identifying the underlying structures for interference alignment. The main numerical insight of this paper is that such an approach appears to be capable of achieving the optimal sDoF for MIMO cellular networks in regimes where linear beamforming dominates asymptotic decomposition, and a significant portion of sDoF elsewhere. This paper considers a state dependent broadcast channel with one transmitter, Alice, and two receivers, Bob and Eve. The problem is to effectively convey (“amplify”) the channel state sequence to Bob while “masking” it from Eve. The extent to which the state sequence cannot be masked from Eve is referred to as leakage. This can be viewed as a secrecy problem, where we desire that the channel state itself be minimally leaked to Eve while being communicated to Bob. This paper is aimed at characterizing the tradeoff region between amplification and leakage rates for such a system. An achievable coding scheme is presented, wherein the transmitter transmits a partial state information over the channel to facilitate the amplification process. For the case when Bob observes a stronger signal than Eve, the achievable coding scheme is enhanced with secure refinement. Outer bounds on the tradeoff region are also derived, and used in characterizing some special case results. In particular, the optimal amplification-leakage rate difference, called as differential amplification capacity, is characterized for the reversely degraded discrete memoryless channel, the degraded binary, and the degraded Gaussian channels. In addition, for the degraded Gaussian model, the extremal corner points of the tradeoff region are characterized, and the gap between the outer bound and achievable rate-regions is shown to be less than half a bit for a wide set of channel parameters. In their seminal 1996 paper, Anantharam and Verdú showed that feedback does not increase the capacity of a queue under First-in-First-Out service policy and exponentially distributed service time. Since the channel has memory, this negative result raises the question whether it extends to other non-trivial combinations of service policy and service time. This paper addresses this question by providing two sufficient conditions under which feedback either increases capacity or does not increase capacity. The first is a sufficient condition on the service time distribution for feedback to increase capacity under First-In-First-Out service policy. The second is a sufficient condition for feedback not to increase capacity and is general in that it depends on the output distribution of the queue, but explicitly depends neither on the queue policy nor on the service time distribution. In this paper, we determine the entire secure degrees of freedom (s.d.o.f.) regions of the $K$ -user Gaussian multiple access (MAC) wiretap channel and the $K$ -user interference channel (IC) with secrecy constraints. For the IC, we consider three secrecy constraints: K-user IC with an external eavesdropper (IC-EE), K-user IC with confidential messages (IC-CM), and their combination Kuser IC with confidential messages and external eavesdropper (IC-CM-EE). The converse for the IC includes constraints both due to secrecy as well as due to interference. For the IC, although the portion of the region close to the optimum sum s.d.o.f. point is governed by the upper bounds due to secrecy constraints, the other portions of the region are governed by the upper bounds due to interference constraints. Different from the existing literature, in order to fully understand the characterization of the s.d.o.f. region of the IC, one has to study the four-user case, i.e., the two- or three-user cases do not illustrate the full generality of the problem. In order to prove the achievability, we use the polytope structure of the converse region. In both MAC and IC cases, we develop explicit schemes that achieve the extreme points of the polytope region given by the converse. In particular, the extreme points of the MAC region are achieved by an $m$ -user MAC wiretap channel with $K-m$ helpers, i.e., by setting $K-m$ users’ secure rates to zero and utilizing them as pure (structured) cooperative jammers. The extreme points of the IC region are achieved by a $(K-m)$ -user IC with confidential messages, $m$ helpers, and $N$ external eavesdroppers, for $m\ge 1$ and a finite $N$ . A byproduct of our results in this paper is that the sum s.d.o.f. is achieved only at one extreme point of the s.d.o.f. region, which is the symmetric-rate extreme point, for both MAC and IC channel models. We consider the problem of tracking, in realtime, an unstable autoregressive (AR) source over a discrete memoryless channel (DMC). We present computable achievable bounds on the optimal tracking error for general DMCs, and we particularize these bounds to the binary erasure, packet erasure, and binary symmetric channels. The achievable bounds in this paper are proved using a partially separate source quantization and channel coding architecture. We do not use complete or strict separation in usual Shannon sense: 1) the quantiser’s resolution is optimized against the error-correction capabilities of the channel code and the channel code is optimized against an AR Hamming distortion function matched to the source (a weighted Hamming distortion function that provides unequal error protection to different parts of the AR source). The achievability results for general DMCs are proved by combining the AR Hamming distortion function with new realtime (streaming) versions of the random coding union and dependence testing bounds. When applied to erasure channels, these general bounds combine with simple converses to demonstrate that the channel’s cutoff rate plays an important role in realtime tracking. The compute-and-forward (C&F) protocol in quasi-static channels normally employs lattice codes based on the rational integers $\mathbb {Z}$ , the Gaussian integers $\mathbb {Z} [i]$ , or the Eisenstein integers $\mathbb {Z} [\omega ]$ , while its extension to more general channels often assumes channel state information at transmitters (CSIT). In this paper, we propose a novel scheme for C&F in block-fading channels without CSIT, which is referred to as ring C&F because the fading coefficients are quantized to the canonical embedding of a ring of algebraic integers. Owing to the multiplicative closure of the algebraic lattices employed, a relay is able to decode an algebraic–integer linear combination of lattice codewords. We analyze its achievable computation rates and show it outperforms conventional C&F based on the $\mathbb {Z}$ -lattices. By investigating the effect of the Diophantine approximation by algebraic conjugates, we prove that the degrees of freedom (DoFs) of the optimized computation rate are ${n}/{L}$ , where $n$ is the number of blocks and $L$ is the number of users. This paper characterizes the performance in terms of queueing stability of a network composed of multiple MIMO transmitter-receiver pairs taking into account the dynamic traffic pattern and the probing/feedback cost. We adopt a centralized scheduling scheme that selects a number of active pairs in each time-slot. We consider that the transmitters apply interference alignment (IA) technique if two or more pairs are active, whereas in the special case where one pair is active point-to-point MIMO singular value decomposition (SVD) is used. We consider a time-division duplex (TDD) system where transmitters acquire their channel state information (CSI) by decoding the pilot sequences sent by the receivers. Since global CSI knowledge is required for IA, the transmitters have also to exchange their estimated CSIs over a backhaul of limited capacity (i.e. imperfect case). Under this setting, we characterize in this paper the stability region of the system under both the imperfect and perfect (i.e. unlimited backhaul) cases, then we examine the gap between these two resulting regions. Further, under each case we provide a centralized probing policy that achieves the max stability region. These stability regions and scheduling policies are given for the symmetric system, where all the path loss coefficients are equal to each other, as well as for the general system. For the symmetric system, we provide the conditions under which IA yields a queueing stability gain compared to SVD. Under the general system, the adopted scheduling policy is of a high computational complexity for moderate numbers of pairs, consequently we propose an approximate policy that has a reduced complexity but that achieves only a fraction of the system stability region. This paper considers a Gaussian channel with one transmitter and two receivers. The goal is to maximize the communication rate at the intended/primary receiver subject to a disturbance constraint at the unintended/secondary receiver. The disturbance is measured in terms of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) of the interference that the transmission to the primary receiver inflicts on the secondary receiver. This paper presents a new upper bound for the problem of maximizing the mutual information subject to an MMSE constraint. The new bound holds for vector inputs of any length and recovers a previously known limiting (when the length of the vector input tends to infinity) expression from the work of Bustin et al. The key technical novelty is a new upper bound on the MMSE. This bound allows one to bound the MMSE for all signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values below a certain SNR at which the MMSE is known (which corresponds to the disturbance constraint). The bound also complements the “single-crossing point property” of the MMSE that upper bounds the MMSE for all SNR values above a certain value at which the MMSE value is known. The MMSE upper bound provides a refined characterization of the phase-transition phenomenon, which manifests, in the limit as the length of the vector input goes to infinity, as a discontinuity of the MMSE for the problem at hand. This paper studies the fundamental tradeoff between storage and latency in a general wireless interference network with caches equipped at all transmitters and receivers. The tradeoff is characterized by an information-theoretic metric, normalized delivery time (NDT), which is the worst case delivery time of the actual traffic load at a transmission rate specified by degrees of freedom of a given channel. We obtain both an achievable upper bound and a theoretical lower bound of the minimum NDT for any number of transmitters, any number of receivers, and any feasible cache size tuple. We show that the achievable NDT is exactly optimal in certain cache size regions, and is within a bounded multiplicative gap to the theoretical lower bound in other regions. In the achievability analysis, we first propose a novel cooperative transmitter/receiver coded caching strategy. It offers the freedom to adjust file splitting ratios for NDT minimization. We then propose a delivery strategy that transforms the considered interference network into a new class of cooperative X-multicast channels. It leverages local caching gain, coded multicasting gain, and transmitter cooperation gain (via interference alignment and interference neutralization) opportunistically. Finally, the achievable NDT is obtained by solving a linear programming problem. This paper reveals that with caching at both transmitter and receiver sides, the network can benefit simultaneously from traffic load reduction and transmission rate enhancement, thereby effectively reducing the content delivery latency. We study the channel capacity of a general discrete energy harvesting channel with a finite battery. Contrary to traditional communication systems, the transmitter of such a channel is powered by a device that harvests energy from a random exogenous energy source and has a finite-sized battery. As a consequence, at each transmission opportunity, the system can only transmit a symbol whose energy is no more than the energy currently available. This new type of power supply introduces an unprecedented input constraint for the channel, which is simultaneously random, instantaneous, and influenced by the full history of the inputs and the energy harvesting process. Furthermore, naturally, in such a channel, the energy information is observed causally at the transmitter. Both of these characteristics pose great challenges for the analysis of the channel capacity. In this paper, we use techniques developed for channels with side information and finite-state channels, to obtain lower and upper bounds on the capacity of energy harvesting channels. In particular, in a general case with Markov energy harvesting processes, we use stationarity and ergodicity theory to compute and optimize the achievable rates for the channels, and derive a series of computable capacity upper and lower bounds. This paper considers the problem of variable-length coding over a discrete memoryless channel with noiseless feedback. This paper provides a stochastic control view of the problem whose solution is analyzed via a newly proposed symmetrized divergence, termed extrinsic Jensen–Shannon (EJS) divergence. It is shown that strictly positive lower bounds on EJS divergence provide nonasymptotic upper bounds on the expected code length. This paper presents strictly positive lower bounds on EJS divergence, and hence nonasymptotic upper bounds on the expected code length, for the following two coding schemes: 1) variable-length posterior matching and 2) MaxEJS coding scheme that is based on a greedy maximization of the EJS divergence. As an asymptotic corollary of the main results, this paper also provides a rate–reliability test. Variable-length coding schemes that satisfy the condition(s) of the test for parameters $R$ and $E$ are guaranteed to achieve a rate $R$ and an error exponent $E$ . The results are specialized for posterior matching and MaxEJS to obtain deterministic one-phase coding schemes achieving capacity and optimal error exponent. This paper addresses a two-user Gaussian multiple access channel (MAC) under peak power constraints at the transmitters. It is shown that generating the code-books of both users according to discrete distributions with a finite number of mass points achieves the largest weighted sum-rate in the network. This verifies that any point on the boundary of the capacity region of a two-user MAC under peak power constraints at both transmitters is achieved by discrete distributions with a finite number of mass points. Although the capacity-achieving distributions are not necessarily unique, it is verified that only discrete distributions with a finite number of mass points can achieve a point on the boundary of the capacity region. It is shown that there exist an infinite number of sum-rate-optimal points on the boundary of the capacity region. In contrast to the Gaussian MAC with average power constraints, we verify that time division (TD) cannot achieve any of the sum-rate-optimal points in the Gaussian MAC with peak power constraints. Using the so-called I-MMSE identity of Guo et al., the largest achievable sum-rate by orthogonal code division (OCD) is characterized where it is shown that Walsh–Hadamard spreading codes of length 2 are optimal. In the symmetric case where the peak power constraints at both transmitters are identical, we verify that OCD can achieve a sum-rate that is strictly larger than the highest sum-rate achieved by TD. Finally, it is demonstrated that there are values for the maximum peak power at the transmitters such that OCD can not achieve any of the sum-rate-optimal points on the boundary of the capacity region. This paper provides a unified framework to study the performance of successive interference cancellation (SIC) in wireless networks with arbitrary fading distribution and power-law path loss. An analytical characterization of the performance of SIC is given as a function of different system parameters. The results suggest that the marginal benefit of enabling the receiver to successively decode \(k\) users diminishes very fast with \(k\) , especially in networks of high dimensions and small path loss exponent. On the other hand, SIC is highly beneficial when the users are clustered around the receiver and/or very low-rate codes are used. In addition, with multiple packet reception, a lower per-user information rate always results in higher aggregate throughput in interference-limited networks. In contrast, there exists a positive optimal per-user rate that maximizes the aggregate throughput in noisy networks. The analytical results serve as useful tools to understand the potential gain of SIC in heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs). Using these tools, this paper quantifies the gain of SIC on the coverage probability in HCNs with nonaccessible base stations. We establish the degrees of freedom (DoF) region for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) two-transmitter, and two-receiver ( $2 \times 2$ ) interference network with a general message set consisting of nine messages, one for each pair of a subset of transmitters at which that message is known and a subset of receivers where that message is desired. An outer bound on the general nine-message $2 \times 2$ interference network is obtained and it is shown to be tight, thereby establishing the DoF region for the most general antenna setting wherein the four nodes have an arbitrary number of antennas each. The DoF-optimal scheme is applicable to the MIMO $2 \times 2$ interference network with constant channel coefficients, and hence, a fortiori, to time/frequency varying channel scenarios. In particular, a linear precoding scheme is proposed that can achieve all the DoF tuples in the DoF region. In it, the precise roles played by transmit zero-forcing, interference alignment, random beamforming, symbol extensions, and asymmetric complex signaling (ACS) are delineated. For instance, we identify a class of antenna settings, in which ACS is required to achieve the fractional-valued corner points. Evidently, the DoF regions of all previously unknown cases of the $2 \times 2$ interference network with a subset of the nine-messages are newly established as special cases of the general result of this paper. For instance, the DoF region of the well-known four-message (and even three-message) MIMO $X$ channel is newly established. This problem had remained open despite previous studies, which had found inner and outer bounds that were not tight in general. Hence, the DoF regions of all special cases obtained from the general DoF region of the nine-message $2\times 2$ interference network of this paper that include at least three of the four $X$ channel messages are new, among many others. This paper sheds light on how the same physical $2 \times 2$ interference network could be used by a suitable choice of message sets to take most advantage of the channel resource in a flexible and efficient manner. This paper considers a caching system of a single server and multiple users. We aim to characterize the memory-rate tradeoff for caching with uncoded cache placement, under nonuniform file popularity. Focusing on the modified coded caching scheme (MCCS) recently proposed by Yu, etal., we formulate the cache placement optimization problem for the MCCS to minimize the average delivery rate under nonuniform file popularity, restricting to a class of popularity-first placements. We then present two information-theoretic lower bounds on the average rate for caching with uncoded placement, one for general cache placements and the other restricted to the popularity-first placements. By comparing the average rate of the optimized MCCS with the lower bounds, we prove that the optimized MCCS attains the general lower bound for the two-user case, providing the exact memory-rate tradeoff. Furthermore, it attains the popularity-first-based lower bound for the case of general $K$ users with distinct file requests. In these two cases, our results also reveal that the popularity-first placement is optimal for the MCCS, and zero-padding used in coded delivery incurs no loss of optimality. For the case of $K$ users with redundant file requests, our analysis shows that there may exist a gap between the optimized MCCS and the lower bounds due to zero-padding. We next fully characterize the optimal popularity-first cache placement for the MCCS, which is shown to possess a simple file-grouping structure and can be computed via an efficient algorithm using closed-form expressions. Finally, we extend our study to accommodate nonuniformity in both file popularity and size, where we show that the optimized MCCS attains the lower bound for the two-user case, providing the exact memory-rate tradeoff. We study the list decodability of different ensembles of codes over the real alphabet under the assumption of an omniscient adversary. It is a well-known result that when the source and the adversary have power constraints $P $ and $N $ respectively, the list decoding capacity is equal to $\frac {1}{2}\log \frac {P}{N}$. Random spherical codes achieve constant list sizes, and the goal of the present paper is to obtain a better understanding of the smallest achievable list size as a function of the gap to capacity. We show a reduction from arbitrary codes to spherical codes, and derive a lower bound on the list size of typical random spherical codes. We also give an upper bound on the list size achievable using nested Construction-A lattices and infinite Construction-A lattices. We then define and study a class of infinite constellations that generalize Construction-A lattices and prove upper and lower bounds for the same. Other goodness properties such as packing goodness and AWGN goodness of infinite constellations are proved along the way. Finally, we consider random lattices sampled from the Haar distribution and show that if a certain conjecture that originates in analytic number theory is true, then the list size grows as a polynomial function of the gap-to-capacity. We characterize the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) region of a class of two-unicast wireless networks under the assumption of delayed channel state information at the transmitters. We consider a layered topology with arbitrary connectivity, and we introduce new outer-bounds on the DoF region of such networks through the graph-theoretic notion of bottleneck nodes. Such nodes act as informational bottlenecks only under the assumption of delayed channel state information. We also present new transmission schemes that achieve the outer-bounds. We show that unlike the instantaneous channel state information model, the sum DoF of two-unicast networks with delayed channel knowledge can take an infinite set of values. The capacity under strong asynchronism was recently shown to be essentially unaffected by the imposed decoding delay—the elapsed time between when information is available at the transmitter and when it is decoded—and the output sampling rate. This paper shows that, in contrast with capacity, the second-order term in the maximum rate expansion is sensitive to both parameters. When the receiver must locate the sent codeword exactly and therefore achieve minimum delay equal to the blocklength $n$ , the second-order term in the maximum rate expansion is of order $\Theta (1/\rho)$ for any sampling rate $\rho =O(1/\sqrt {n})$ (and $\rho =\omega (1/n)$ for otherwise reliable communication is impossible). Instead, if $\rho =\omega (1/\sqrt {n})$ , then the second-order term is the same as under full sampling and is given by a standard $\Theta (\sqrt {n})$ term. This paper studies the asymptotic properties of average area spectral efficiency (ASE) of a downlink cellular network in the limit of very dense base station (BS) and user densities. This asymptotic analysis relies on three assumptions: 1) interference is treated as noise; 2) the BS locations are drawn from a Poisson point process; and 3) the path loss function is bounded above satisfying mild regularity conditions. We consider three possible definitions of the average ASE, all of which give units of bits per second per unit bandwidth per unit area. When there is no constraint on the minimum operational signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and instantaneous full channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitter, the average ASE is proven to saturate to a constant, which we derive in a closed form. For the other two ASE definitions, wherein either a minimum SINR is enforced or CSI is not available, the average ASE is instead shown to collapse to zero at high BS density. We provide several familiar case studies for the class of considered path loss models, and demonstrate that our results cover most previous models and results on ultradense networks as special cases. Compute-and-forward (CF) harnesses interference in wireless communications by exploiting structured coding. The key idea of CF is to compute integer combinations of code words from multiple source nodes, rather than to decode individual code words by treating others as noise. Compute-compress-and-forward (CCF) can further enhance the network performance by introducing compression operations at receivers. In this paper, we develop a more general compression framework, termed generalized CCF (GCCF), where the compression function involves the selection of message segments over finite fields. We show that GCCF achieves a broader compression rate region than CCF. We also compare our compression rate region with the fundamental Slepian–Wolf (SW) region. We show that GCCF is optimal in the sense of achieving the minimum total compression rate. We also establish the criteria under which GCCF achieves the SW region. In addition, we consider a two-hop relay network employing the GCCF scheme. We formulate a sum-rate maximization problem and develop an approximate algorithm to solve the problem. In this paper, we introduce the notion of plausible deniability in an information theoretic framework. We consider a scenario where an entity that eavesdrops through a broadcast channel summons one of the parties in a communication protocol to reveal their message (or signal vector). It is desirable that the summoned party has enough freedom to produce a fake output that is likely plausible given the eavesdropper’s observation. We examine three variants of this problem—message deniability, transmitter deniability, and receiver deniability. In the first setting, the message sender is summoned to produce the sent message. Similarly, in the second and third settings, the transmitter and the receiver are required to produce the transmitted codeword and the received vector, respectively. For each of these settings, we examine the maximum communication rate that allows a given minimum rate of plausible fake outputs. First, for the message deniability problem, we fully characterize the capacity region for general broadcast channels. Next, for the transmitter deniability problem, we give an achievable region for general broadcast channels by fully characterizing the set of rate pairs’ achievable using deterministic coding schemes. In this paper, we extend Construction A of lattices to the ring of algebraic integers of a general imaginary quadratic field that may not form a principal ideal domain (PID). We show that such a construction can produce good lattices for coding in the sense of Poltyrev and for MSE quantization. As an application, we then apply the proposed lattices to the compute-and-forward paradigm with limited feedback. Without feedback, compute-and-forward is typically realized with lattice codes over the ring of integers, the ring of Gaussian integers, or the ring of Eisenstein integers, which are all PIDs. A novel scheme called adaptive compute-and-forward is proposed to exploit the limited feedback about the channel state by working with the best ring of imaginary quadratic integers. Simulation results show that by adaptively choosing the best ring among the considered ones according to the limited feedback, the proposed adaptive compute-and-forward provides a better performance than that provided by the conventional compute-and-forward scheme which works over Gaussian or Eisenstein integers solely. The topological interference management (TIM) problem refers to the study of the $K$ -user partially connected interference networks with no channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT), except for the knowledge of network topology. In this paper, we study the TIM problem with confidential messages (TIM-CM), where message confidentiality must be satisfied in addition to reliability constraints. In particular, each transmitted message must be decodable at its intended receiver and remain confidential at the remaining $(K-1)$ receivers. Our main contribution is to present a comprehensive set of results for the TIM-CM problem by studying the symmetric secure degrees of freedom (SDoF). To this end, we first characterize necessary and sufficient conditions for feasibility of positive symmetric SDoF for any arbitrary topology. We next present two achievable schemes for the TIM-CM problem: For the first scheme, we use the concept of secure partition and, for the second one, we use the concept of secure independent sets. We also present outer bounds on symmetric SDoF for any arbitrary network topology. Several information-theoretic studies on channels with output quantization have identified the capacity-achieving input distributions for different fading channels with 1-bit in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) output quantization. However, an exact characterization of the capacity-achieving input distribution for channels with multi-bit phase quantization has not been provided. In this paper, we consider four different channel models with multi-bit phase quantization at the output and identify the optimal input distribution for each channel model. We first consider a complex Gaussian channel with $b$ -bit phase-quantized output and prove that the capacity-achieving distribution is a rotated $2^{b}$ -phase shift keying (PSK). The analysis is then extended to multiple fading scenarios. We show that the optimality of rotated $2^{b}$ -PSK continues to hold under noncoherent fast fading Rician channels with $b$ -bit phase quantization when line-of-sight (LoS) is present. When channel state information (CSI) is available at the receiver, we identify $\frac {2\pi }{2^{b}}$ -symmetry and constant amplitude as the necessary and sufficient conditions for the ergodic capacity-achieving input distribution; which a $2^{b}$ -PSK satisfies. This paper considers the problem of communication over a discrete memoryless channel (DMC) or an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel subject to the constraint that the probability that an adversary who observes the channel outputs can detect the communication is low. In particular, the relative entropy between the output distributions when a codeword is transmitted and when no input is provided to the channel must be sufficiently small. For a DMC whose output distribution induced by the “off” input symbol is not a mixture of the output distributions induced by other input symbols, it is shown that the maximum amount of information that can be transmitted under this criterion scales like the square root of the blocklength. In this paper, we study the capacity regions of two-way diamond channels. We show that for a linear deterministic model the capacity of the diamond channel in each direction can be simultaneously achieved for all values of channel parameters, where the forward and backward channel parameters are not necessarily the same. We divide the achievability scheme into three cases, depending on the forward and backward channel parameters. For the first case, we use a reverse amplify-and-forward strategy in the relays. For the second case, we use four relay strategies based on the reverse amplify-and-forward with some modifications in terms of replacement and repetition of some stream levels. For the third case, we use two relay strategies based on performing two rounds of repetitions in a relay. The proposed schemes for deterministic channels are used to find the capacity regions within constant gaps for two special cases of the Gaussian two-way diamond channel. First, for the general Gaussian two-way relay channel, the capacity within a constant gap is achieved with a simpler coding scheme as compared with the prior works. In this paper, the $\eta $ -Nash equilibrium ( $\eta $ -NE) region of the two-user Gaussian interference channel (IC) with perfect output feedback is approximated to within 1 bit/s/Hz and $\eta $ arbitrarily close to 1 bit/s/Hz. The relevance of the $\eta $ -NE region is that it provides the set of rate pairs that are achievable and stable in the IC when both transmitter–receiver pairs autonomously tune their own transmit–receive configurations seeking an $\eta $ -optimal individual transmission rate. Therefore, any rate tuple outside the $\eta $ -NE region is not stable as there always exists one link able to increase by at least $\eta $ bits/s/Hz its own transmission rate by updating its own transmit–receive configuration. The main insights that arise from this paper are as follows. First, the $\eta $ -NE region achieved with feedback is larger than or equal to the $\eta $ -NE region without feedback. More importantly, for each rate pair achievable at an $\eta $ -NE without feedback, there exists at least one rate pair achievable at an $\eta $ -NE with feedback that is weakly Pareto superior. Second, there always exists an $\eta $ -NE transmit–receive configuration that achieves a rate pair that is at most 1 bit/s/Hz per user away from the outer bound of the capacity region. In this paper, the capacity region of the linear deterministic interference channel with noisy channel-output feedback (LD-IC-NF) is fully characterized. The proof of achievability is based on random coding arguments and rate splitting, block-Markov superposition coding, and backward decoding. The proof of the converse reuses some of the existing outer bounds and includes new ones obtained using genie-aided models. Following the insight gained from the analysis of the LD-IC-NF, an achievability region and a converse region for the two-user Gaussian interference channel with noisy channel-output feedback (G-IC-NF) are presented. We investigate the benefits of incorporating relays in future multi-user wireless networks that seek to exploit unexplored bands of very high frequency spectrum, where transmitted signals are known to be highly susceptible to outages. To this end, we examine a two-user bursty MIMO Gaussian interference channel with an in-band relay, where Bernoulli random states conceptually capture signal outages. As our main result, we show that an in-band relay can provide a degrees of freedom (DoF) gain in this bursty channel. This beneficial role of in-band relays in the bursty channel is in direct contrast to their role in the non-bursty channel which is not as significant to provide a DoF gain. More importantly, we demonstrate that in certain antenna configurations, an in-band relay can help achieve interference-free performances with increased DoF. We find the benefits particularly substantial in high-outage circumstances, as the DoF gain can grow linearly with the number of antennas at the relay. In this paper, first we derive an outer bound from which we obtain a necessary condition for interference-free DoF performances. In many wireless systems, the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio that is applicable to a certain transmission, referred to as channel state information (CSI), can only be learned after the transmission has taken place and is thereby delayed (outdated). In such systems, hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) protocols are often used to achieve high throughput with low latency. This paper put forth the family of expandable message space (EMS) protocols, that generalize the HARQ protocol and allow for rate adaptation based on delayed CSI at the transmitter (CSIT). Assuming a block-fading channel, the proposed EMS protocols are analyzed using dynamic programming. When full delayed CSIT is available and there is a constraint on the average decoding time, it is shown that the optimal zero outage EMS protocol has a particularly simple operational interpretation and that the throughput is identical to that of the backtrack retransmission request (BRQ) protocol. We also devise EMS protocols for the case in which CSIT is only available through a finite number of feedback messages. The numerical results demonstrate that BRQ approaches the ergodic capacity quickly compared with HARQ, while EMS protocols with only three and four feedback messages achieve throughputs, that are only slightly worse than that of BRQ. In order to gain new insights into multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) interference networks, the optimality of \sum k=1^{K} Mk/2 (half the cake per user) degrees of freedom is explored for a K -user MIMO interference channel where the cross-channels have arbitrary rank constraints, and the k th transmitter and receiver are equipped with Mk antennas each. The result consolidates and significantly generalizes results from prior studies by Krishnamurthy et al., of rank-deficient interference channels where all users have M antennas; and by Tang et al., of full rank interference channels where the $k$ th user pair has M_{k} antennas. The broader outcome of this paper is a novel class of replication-based outer bounds for arbitrary rank-constrained MIMO interference networks where replicas of existing users are added as auxiliary users and the network connectivity is chosen to ensure that any achievable scheme for the original network also works in the new network. The replicated network creates a new perspective of the problem, so that even simple arguments such as user cooperation become quite powerful when applied in the replicated network, giving rise to stronger outer bounds, than when applied directly in the original network. Remarkably, the replication-based bounds are broadly applicable not only to MIMO interference channels with arbitrary rank-constraints, but much more broadly, even beyond Gaussian settings. This paper studies the problem of secure communications over broadcast channels under the individual secrecy constraints. That is, the transmitter wants to send two independent messages to two legitimate receivers in the presence of an eavesdropper, while keeping the eavesdropper ignorant of each message (i.e., the information leakage rate from each message to the eavesdropper is made vanishing). Building upon Carleial–Hellman’s secrecy coding, Wyner’s secrecy coding, and the framework of Marton’s coding together with techniques, such as rate splitting and indirect decoding, an achievable individual secrecy rate region is established with the characterization of capacity regions for some special cases. In particular, the individual secrecy capacity region for the linear deterministic model is fully characterized, and for the Gaussian model, a constant gap (i.e., 0.5 b within the individual secrecy capacity region) result is obtained. To illustrate the impact of different secrecy constraints on the corresponding capacity regions, comparisons are made with those satisfying joint secrecy and without secrecy constraints. In this paper, we propose capacity-achieving communication schemes for Gaussian finite-state Markov channels subject to an average channel input power constraint, under the assumption that the transmitters can have access to delayed noiseless output feedback as well as instantaneous or delayed channel state information. Recent results have shown that feedback can significantly increase the capacity of interference networks. This paper considers the impact of noise on such gains due to feedback. In particular, this paper considers the two-user linear deterministic interference channel with noisy feedback, as a stepping stone to characterize the approximate capacity region for the two-user Gaussian interference channel with noisy feedback. First, the capacity region for the symmetric linear deterministic interference channel with noisy feedback is obtained. It is shown that noisy feedback enlarges the capacity region if and only if the number of feedback bits l is greater than a certain threshold l^{*} . It is found that, excluding the regime ({1}/{2}) \leq \alpha \leq 2 , where \alpha is the normalized interference level, in which even full feedback does not increase symmetric capacity, this threshold l^{*} is equal to the per-user symmetric capacity without feedback. One of the key ideas is a novel converse outer bounding technique for the weighted sum rates 2R_{1} + R_{2}$ and R_{1} + 2R_{2} . These results and the techniques developed for the linear deterministic model are then applied to characterize inner bounds and outer bounds for the symmetric Gaussian interference channel with noisy feedback. The outer bounds are shown to be at most 4.7 b/s/Hz away from the achievable rate region. This paper studies and derives new results for the interference channel with a relay (ICR). Three inner bounds for the discrete memoryless ICR are proposed, based on three coding strategies that employ layered code at the relay. The first scheme is inspired by layered noisy network coding, proposed by Lim et al. for the two-way relay channel, the second and the third schemes rely on simpler encoding and decoding processes, dubbed layered quantize-forward. Performance of the proposed schemes is investigated for two classes of channels with Gaussian noise: the interference channel with in-band relay reception/out-of-band relay transmission and the interference with in-band relay reception/in-band relay transmission. For the former class of channels, it is shown that the first proposed scheme achieves the same inner bound as the generalized hash-forward scheme with incremental binning. In addition, the inner bound is within 0.5 bit of the capacity region under certain conditions on the channel parameters. For the latter class of channels, new upper bounds on sum-rate are established by extending known upper bounds for symmetric channels. The first inner bound is shown to be within 0.5 bit of the capacity region if the relay’s power exceeds a certain threshold, which depends on channel parameters. Numerical examples show that the proposed schemes can achieve significantly higher sum-rates when compared with other compress-forward schemes. Analysis also reveals a tradeoff between achievable rates, coding delay, and complexity of the proposed schemes. Results in this paper provide a better understanding of coding for the ICR, in particular, they show that layered coding is a beneficial element in multiuser networks with relays. In this paper, capacity bounds for the two-user interference channels with cooperative receivers via conferencing links of finite capacities are investigated. Capacity results known for these communication scenarios are limited to a very few special cases of the one-sided channels. One of the challenges in obtaining capacity limits of such cooperative networks is how to establish efficient capacity outer bounds for them. In this paper, by applying new techniques, novel capacity outer bounds are established for the interference channels with conferencing receivers. Using the outer bounds, several new capacity results are proved for interesting channels with unidirectional cooperation in strong and mixed interference regimes. A conferencing link (between receivers) may be utilized to provide a receiver with “information about its desired signal” or “information about its interfering signal”. It is demonstrated that both strategies can be helpful to achieve capacity. Finally, for the case of Gaussian interference channel with conferencing receivers, it is argued that our outer bound is strictly tighter than the previous one derived by Wang and Tse.
