In this paper, we consider encoding strategies for the Z-channel with noiseless feedback. We analyze the combinatorial setting where the maximum number of errors inflicted by an adversary is proportional to the number of transmissions, which goes to infinity. Without feedback, it is known that the rate of optimal asymmetric-error-correcting codes for the error fraction $\tau \ge 1/4$ vanishes as the blocklength grows. In this paper, we give an efficient feedback encoding scheme with $n$ transmissions that achieves a positive rate for any fraction of errors $\tau < 1$ and $n\to \infty $. Quantum error-correcting codes play the role of suppressing noise and decoherence in quantum systems by introducing redundancy. Some strategies can be used to improve the parameters of these codes. For example, entanglement can provide a way for quantum error-correcting codes to achieve higher rates than the one obtained by means of the traditional stabilizer formalism. Such codes are called entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting (EAQEC) codes. In this paper, we utilize algebraic geometry codes to construct several families of EAQEC codes derived from the Euclidean and the Hermitian construction. Three families constructed here consist of codes whose quantum Singleton defect is equal to zero, one, or two. We also construct families of EAQEC codes with an encoding rate exceeding the quantum Gilbert-Varshamov bound. Additionally, asymptotically good towers of linear complementary dual codes are used to obtain asymptotically good families of EAQEC codes consuming maximal entanglement. Furthermore, a simple comparison with the quantum Gilbert-Varshamov bound demonstrates that, by utilizing the proposed construction, it is possible to generate an asymptotically family of EAQEC codes that exceeds this bound. We study the list decodability of different ensembles of codes over the real alphabet under the assumption of an omniscient adversary. It is a well-known result that when the source and the adversary have power constraints $P $ and $N $ respectively, the list decoding capacity is equal to $\frac {1}{2}\log \frac {P}{N}$. Random spherical codes achieve constant list sizes, and the goal of the present paper is to obtain a better understanding of the smallest achievable list size as a function of the gap to capacity. We show a reduction from arbitrary codes to spherical codes, and derive a lower bound on the list size of typical random spherical codes. We also give an upper bound on the list size achievable using nested Construction-A lattices and infinite Construction-A lattices. We then define and study a class of infinite constellations that generalize Construction-A lattices and prove upper and lower bounds for the same. Other goodness properties such as packing goodness and AWGN goodness of infinite constellations are proved along the way. Finally, we consider random lattices sampled from the Haar distribution and show that if a certain conjecture that originates in analytic number theory is true, then the list size grows as a polynomial function of the gap-to-capacity. $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive codes are subgroups of $\mathbb {Z}^{n}_{2^{s}}$ , and can be seen as a generalization of linear codes over $\mathbb {Z}_{2}$ and $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$. A $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -linear code is a binary code (not necessarily linear) which is the Gray map image of a $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive code. We consider $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive simplex codes of type $\alpha $ and $\beta $ , which are a generalization over $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ of the binary simplex codes. These codes are related to the $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive Hadamard codes. In this paper, we use this relationship to find a linear subcode of the corresponding $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -linear codes, called kernel, and a representation of these codes as cosets of this kernel. In particular, this also gives the linearity of these codes. Similarly, $\mathbb {Z}_{2^{s}}$ -additive MacDonald codes are defined for $s>2$ , and equivalent results are obtained. Linear codes over $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ of length $n$ are subgroups of $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}^{n}$. These codes are also called $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -additive codes and can be seen as a generalization of linear codes over $\mathbb {Z}_{2}$ and $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$. A $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -linear code is a code over $\mathbb {Z}_{p}$ , not necessarily linear, which is the generalized Gray map image of a $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -additive code. In 2015, a systematic encoding was found for $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$ -linear codes. Moreover, an alternative permutation decoding method, which is suitable for any binary code (not necessarily linear) with a systematic encoding, was established. In this paper, we generalize these results by presenting a systematic encoding for any $\mathbb {Z}_{p^{s}}$ -linear code with $s\geq 2$ and $p$ prime. We also describe a permutation decoding method for any systematic code over $\mathbb {Z}_{p}$ , not necessarily linear, and show some examples of how to use this systematic encoding in this decoding method. A new family of codes, called clustering-correcting codes, is presented in this paper. This family of codes is motivated by the special structure of the data that is stored in DNA-based storage systems. The data stored in these systems has the form of unordered sequences, also called strands, and every strand is synthesized thousands to millions of times, where some of these copies are read back during sequencing. Due to the unordered structure of the strands, an important task in the decoding process is to place them in their correct order. This is usually accomplished by allocating part of the strand for an index. However, in the presence of errors in the index field, important information on the order of the strands may be lost. Clustering-correcting codes ensure that if the distance between the index fields of two strands is small, their data fields have large distance. It is shown how this property enables to place the strands together in their correct clusters even in the presence of errors. We present lower and upper bounds on the size of clustering-correcting codes and an explicit construction of these codes which uses only a single symbol of redundancy. Due to its high data density and longevity, DNA is considered a promising medium for satisfying ever-increasing data storage needs. However, the diversity of errors that occur in DNA sequences makes efficient error-correction a challenging task. This paper aims to address simultaneously correcting two types of errors, namely, short tandem duplication and edit errors, where an edit error may be a substitution, deletion, or insertion. We focus on tandem repeats of length at most 3 and design codes for correcting an arbitrary number of duplication errors and one edit error. Because an edited symbol can be duplicated many times (as part of substrings of various lengths), a single edit can affect an unbounded substring of the retrieved word. However, we show that with appropriate preprocessing, the effect may be limited to a substring of finite length, thus making efficient error-correction possible. We construct a code for correcting the aforementioned errors and provide lower bounds for its rate. Compared to optimal codes correcting only duplication errors, numerical results show that the asymptotic cost of protecting against an additional edit is only 0.003 bits/symbol when the alphabet has size 4, an important case corresponding to data storage in DNA. Minimal linear codes are in one-to-one correspondence with special types of blocking sets of projective spaces over a finite field, which are called strong or cutting blocking sets. Minimal linear codes have been studied since decades but their tight connection with cutting blocking sets of finite projective spaces was unfolded only in the past few years, and it has not been fully exploited yet. In this paper we apply finite geometric and probabilistic arguments to contribute to the field of minimal codes. We prove an upper bound on the minimal length of minimal codes of dimension $k$ over the $q$ -element Galois field which is linear in both $q$ and $k$ , hence improve the previous superlinear bounds. This result determines the minimal length up to a small constant factor. We also improve the lower and upper bounds on the size of so called higgledy-piggledy line sets in projective spaces and apply these results to present improved bounds on the size of covering codes and saturating sets in projective spaces as well. The sequence reconstruction problem, introduced by Levenshtein in 2001, considers a communication scenario where the sender transmits a codeword from some codebook and the receiver obtains multiple noisy reads of the codeword. The common setup assumes the codebook to be the entire space and the problem is to determine the minimum number of distinct reads that is required to reconstruct the transmitted codeword. Motivated by modern storage devices, we study a variant of the problem where the number of noisy reads $N$ is fixed. Specifically, we design reconstruction codes that reconstruct a codeword from $N$ distinct noisy reads. We focus on channels that introduce a single edit error (i.e. a single substitution, insertion, or deletion) and their variants, and design reconstruction codes for all values of $N$. In particular, for the case of a single edit, we show that as the number of noisy reads increases, the number of redundant symbols required can be gracefully reduced from $\log _{q} n+O(1)$ to $\log _{q} \log _{q} n+O(1)$ , and then to $O(1)$ , where $n$ denotes the length of a codeword. We also show that these reconstruction codes are asymptotically optimal. Finally, via computer simulations, we demonstrate that in certain cases, reconstruction codes can achieve similar performance as classical error-correcting codes with less redundant symbols. Motivated by DNA storage in living organisms, and by known biological mutation processes, we study the reverse-complement string-duplication system. We fully classify the conditions under which the system has full expressiveness, for all alphabets and all fixed duplication lengths. We then focus on binary systems with duplication length 2 and prove that they have full capacity, yet surprisingly, have zero entropy-rate. Finally, by using binary single burst-insertion correcting codes, we construct codes that correct a single reverse-complement duplication of odd length, over any alphabet. While quantum weight enumerators establish some of the best upper bounds on the minimum distance of quantum error-correcting codes, these bounds are not optimized to quantify the performance of quantum codes under the effect of arbitrary quantum channels that describe bespoke noise models. Herein, for any Kraus decomposition of any given quantum channel, we introduce corresponding quantum weight enumerators that naturally generalize the Shor-Laflamme quantum weight enumerators. We establish an indirect linear relationship between these generalized quantum weight enumerators by introducing an auxiliary exact weight enumerator that completely quantifies the quantum code’s projector, and is independent of the underlying noise process. By additionally working within the framework of approximate quantum error correction, we establish a general framework for constructing a linear program that is infeasible whenever approximate quantum error correcting codes with corresponding parameters do not exist. Our linear programming framework allows us to establish the non-existence of certain quantum codes that approximately correct amplitude damping errors, and obtain non-trivial upper bounds on the maximum dimension of a broad family of permutation-invariant quantum codes. We show that a relatively simple reasoning using von Neumann entropy inequalities yields a robust proof of the quantum Singleton bound for quantum error-correcting codes (QECC). For entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECC) and catalytic codes (CQECC), a type of generalized quantum Singleton bound [Brun et al., IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 60(6):3073–3089 (2014)] was believed to hold for many years until recently one of us found a counterexample [MG, Phys. Rev. A 103, 020601 (2021)]. Here, we rectify this state of affairs by proving the correct generalized quantum Singleton bound, extending the above-mentioned proof method for QECC; we also prove information-theoretically tight bounds on the entanglement-communication tradeoff for EAQECC. All of the bounds relate block length $n$ and code length $k$ for given minimum distance $d$ and we show that they are robust, in the sense that they hold with small perturbations for codes which only correct most of the erasure errors of less than $d$ letters. In contrast to the classical case, the bounds take on qualitatively different forms depending on whether the minimum distance is smaller or larger than half the block length. This work gives an explicit construction of a family of error correcting codes for the binary deletion channel and for the Poisson repeat channel. In the binary deletion channel with parameter $p$ (${\mathrm {BDC}}_{p}$) every bit is deleted independently with probability $p$. A lower bound of $(1-p)/9$ is known on the capacity of the ${\mathrm {BDC}}_{p}$ , yet no explicit construction is known to achieve this rate. We give an explicit family of codes of rate $(1-p)/16$ , for every $p$. This improves upon the work of Guruswami and Li (2018) that gave a construction of rate $(1-p)/120$. The codes in our family have polynomial time encoding and decoding algorithms. Another channel considered in this work is the Poisson repeat channel with parameter $\lambda $ (PRC $_{\lambda }$) in which every bit is replaced with a discrete Poisson number of copies of that bit, where the number of copies has mean $\lambda $. We study $k$ -uniform states in heterogeneous systems whose local dimensions are not all the same. Based on the connections between mixed orthogonal arrays with certain minimum Hamming distance, irredundant mixed orthogonal arrays and $k$ -uniform states, we present two constructions of 2-uniform states in heterogeneous systems. We also construct two families of 3-uniform states in heterogeneous systems, which solves a question posed in [D. Goyeneche et al., Phys. Rev. A 94, 012346 (2016)]. We show two methods of generating $(k-1)$ -uniform states from $k$ -uniform states. Some results on the nonexistence of absolutely maximally entangled states are provided. For the applications, we present an orthogonal basis consisting of $k$ -uniform states with the minimum support, and we show that some $k$ -uniform bases are locally irreducible. We present an explicit and efficient algebraic construction of capacity-achieving list decodable codes with both constant alphabet and constant list sizes. More specifically, for any $R \in (0,1)$ and $\epsilon >0$ , we give an algebraic construction of an infinite family of error-correcting codes of rate $R$ , over an alphabet of size $(1/\epsilon)^{O(1/\epsilon ^{2})}$ , that can be list decoded from a $(1-R-\epsilon)$ -fraction of errors with list size at most $\exp (\mathrm {poly}(1/ \epsilon))$. Moreover, the codes can be encoded in time $\mathrm {poly}(1/ \epsilon,n)$ , the output list is contained in a linear subspace of dimension at most $\mathrm {poly}(1/ \epsilon)$ , and a basis for this subspace can be found in time $\mathrm {poly}(1 /\epsilon, n)$. Thus, both encoding and list decoding can be performed in fully polynomial-time $\mathrm {poly}(1/ \epsilon,n)$ , except for pruning the subspace and outputting the final list which takes time $\exp (\mathrm {poly}(1/ \epsilon)) \cdot \mathrm {poly} (n)$. In contrast, prior explicit and efficient constructions of capacity-achieving list decodable codes either required a much higher complexity in terms of $1/ \epsilon $ (and were additionally much less structured), or had super-constant alphabet or list sizes. Our codes are quite natural and structured. Specifically, we use algebraic-geometric (AG) codes with evaluation points restricted to a subfield, and with the message space restricted to a (carefully chosen) linear subspace. Our main observation is that the output list of AG codes with subfield evaluation points is contained in an affine shift of the image of a block-triangular-Toeplitz (BTT) matrix, and that the list size can potentially be reduced to a constant by restricting the message space to a BTT evasive subspace, which is a large subspace that intersects the image of any BTT matrix in a constant number of points. We further show how to explicitly construct such BTT evasive subspaces, based on the explicit subspace designs of Guruswami and Kopparty (Combinatorica, 2016), and composition. Quantum metrology is a promising practical use case for quantum technologies, where physical quantities can be measured with unprecedented precision. In lieu of quantum error correction procedures, near term quantum devices are expected to be noisy, and we have to make do with noisy probe states. We prove that, for a set of carefully chosen symmetric probe states that lie within certain quantum error correction codes, quantum metrology exhibits an advantage over classical metrology even after the probe states are corrupted by a constant number of erasure and dephasing errors. These probe states prove useful for robust metrology not only in the NISQ regime, but also in the asymptotic setting where they achieve Heisenberg scaling. It is known that continuous variable quantum information cannot be protected against naturally occurring noise using Gaussian states and operations only. Noh et al. proposed bosonic oscillator-to-oscillator codes relying on non-Gaussian resource states as an alternative, and showed that these encodings can lead to a reduction of the effective error strength at the logical level as measured by the variance of the classical displacement noise channel. An oscillator-to-oscillator code embeds K logical bosonic modes (in an arbitrary state) into N physical modes by means of a Gaussian N-mode unitary and N-K auxiliary one-mode Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill-states. Here we ask if – in analogy to qubit error-correcting codes – there are families of oscillator-to-oscillator codes with the following threshold property: They allow to convert physical displacement noise with variance below some threshold value to logical noise with variance upper bounded by any (arbitrary) constant. We find that this is not the case if encoding unitaries involving a constant amount of squeezing and maximum likelihood error decoding are used. We show a general lower bound on the logical error probability which is only a function of the amount of squeezing and independent of the number of modes. As a consequence, any physically implementable family of oscillator-to-oscillator codes combined with maximum likelihood error decoding does not admit a threshold. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extensive quantum error correction is necessary in order to perform a useful computation on a noisy quantum computer. Moreover, quantum error correction must be implemented based on imperfect parity check measurements that may return incorrect outcomes or inject additional faults into the qubits. To achieve fault-tolerant error correction, Shor proposed to repeat the sequence of parity check measurements until the same outcome is observed sufficiently many times. Then, one can use this information to perform error correction. A basic implementation of this fault tolerance strategy requires $\Omega (r d^{2})$ parity check measurements for a distance- $d$ code defined by $r$ parity checks. For some specific highly structured quantum codes, Bombin has shown that single-shot fault-tolerant quantum error correction is possible using only $r$ measurements. In this work, we consider a phenomenological noise model for parity check measurements assuming that each bit of a codeword and the measurement outcome suffer from independent bit flips with some error rate $p$. For this model, we demonstrate that fault-tolerant quantum error correction can be achieved using $O(d \log (d))$ measurements for any code with distance $d \geq \Omega (n^\alpha)$ for some constant $\alpha > 0$. Moreover, we prove the existence of a sub-single-shot fault-tolerant quantum error correction scheme using fewer than $r$ measurements. In some cases, the number of parity check measurements required for fault-tolerant quantum error correction is exponentially smaller than the number of parity checks defining the code. The short measurement sequences constructed generally have high weight and our phenomenological noise model is not realistic in this regime. The subblock energy-constrained codes (SECCs) and sliding window-constrained codes (SWCCs) have recently attracted attention due to various applications in communication systems such as simultaneous energy and information transfer. In a SECC, each codeword is divided into smaller non-overlapping windows, called subblocks, and every subblock is constrained to carry sufficient energy. In a SWCC, however, the energy constraint is enforced over every window. In this work, we focus on the binary channel, where sufficient energy is achieved theoretically by using relatively high weight codes, and study the bounded SECCs and bounded SWCCs, where the weight in every window is bounded between a minimum and maximum number. Particularly, we focus on the cases of parameters that there is no rate loss, i.e. the channel capacity is one, and propose two methods to construct capacity-approaching codes with low redundancy and linear-time complexity, based on Knuth’s balancing technique and sequence replacement technique. These methods can be further extended to construct SECCs and SWCCs. For certain codes parameters, our methods incur only one redundant bit. A subset of a vector space $\mathbb {F}_{q}^{n}$ is additive if it is a linear space over the field $\mathbb {F}_{p}$ , where $q=p^{e}$ , $p$ prime, and $e>1$. Bounds on the rank and dimension of the kernel of additive generalised Hadamard (additive GH) codes are established. For specific ranks and dimensions of the kernel within these bounds, additive GH codes are constructed. Moreover, for the case $e=2$ , it is shown that the given bounds are tight and it is possible to construct an additive GH code for all allowable ranks and dimensions of the kernel between these bounds. Quantum codes typically rely on large numbers of degrees of freedom to achieve low error rates. However each additional degree of freedom introduces a new set of error mechanisms. Hence minimizing the degrees of freedom that a quantum code utilizes is helpful. One quantum error correction solution is to encode quantum information into one or more bosonic modes. We revisit rotation-invariant bosonic codes, which are supported on Fock states that are gapped by an integer $g$ apart, and the gap $g$ imparts number shift resilience to these codes. Intuitively, since phase operators and number shift operators do not commute, one expects a trade-off between resilience to number-shift and rotation errors. Here, we obtain results pertaining to the non-existence of approximate quantum error correcting $g$ -gapped single-mode bosonic codes with respect to Gaussian dephasing errors. We show that by using arbitrarily many modes, $g$ -gapped multi-mode codes can yield good approximate quantum error correction codes for any finite magnitude of Gaussian dephasing and amplitude damping errors. We consider (n, k, l) MDS codes of length n, dimension k, and subpacketization l over a finite field F. A codeword of such a code consists of n column-vectors of length l over F, with the property that any k of them suffice to recover the entire codeword. Each of these n vectors may be stored on a separate node in a network. If one of the n nodes fails, we can recover its content by downloading symbols from the surviving nodes, and the total number of symbols downloaded in the worst case is called the repair bandwidth of the code. By the cut-set bound, the repair bandwidth of an (n, k, l) MDS code is at least l(n−1)/(n−k). There are several constructions of MDS codes whose repair bandwidth meets or asymptotically meets the cut-set bound. For example, letting r = n−k denote the number of parities, Ye and Barg constructed (n, k, rn) Reed–Solomon codes that asymptotically meet the cut-set bound, Ye and Barg also constructed optimal-bandwidth and optimal-update (n, k, rn) MDS codes. Wang, Tamo, and Bruck constructed optimal-bandwidth (n, k, rn/(r+1)) MDS codes, and these codes have the smallest known subpacketization for optimal-bandwidth MDS codes. A key idea in all these constructions is to represent certain integers in base r. We show how this technique can be refined to improve the subpacketization of the two MDS code constructions by Ye and Barg, while achieving asymptotically optimal repair bandwidth. Specifically, when r = sm for an integer s, we obtain an (n, k, sm+n−1) Reed–Solomon code and an optimal-update (n, k, sm+n−1) MDS code, both having asymptotically optimal repair bandwidth. Thus for r = 2m, for example, we achieve the subpacketization of 2m+n−1 rather than 2mn in the original constructions by Ye and Barg. When r is not an integral power, we can still obtain (n, k, sm+ n−1) Reed–Solomon codes and optimal-update (n, k, sm+n−1) MDS codes by choosing positive integers s and m such that sm ≤ r. In this case, however, the resulting codes have bandwidth that is near-optimal rather than asymptotically optimal. We also present an extension of this idea to reduce the subpacketization of the Wang–Tamo–Bruck construction while achieving a repair-by-transfer scheme with asymptotically optimal repair bandwidth. For example, for r = 2m we achieve the subpacketization of 2k/r+m−1, which significantly improves upon the subpacketization of 2mn/(r+1) in the Wang–Tamo–Bruck construction. We construct integer error-correcting codes and covering codes for the limited-magnitude error channel with more than one error. The codes are lattices that pack or cover the space with the appropriate error ball. Some of the constructions attain an asymptotic packing/covering density that is constant. The results are obtained via various methods, including the use of codes in the Hamming metric, modular Bt-sequences, 2-fold Sidon sets, and sets avoiding arithmetic progression. We propose coding techniques that simultaneously limit the length of homopolymers runs, ensure the GC-content constraint, and are capable of correcting a single edit error in strands of nucleotides in DNA-based data storage systems. In particular, for given ℓ, ε > 0, we propose simple and efficient encoders/decoders that transform binary sequences into DNA base sequences (codewords), namely sequences of the symbols A, T, C and G, that satisfy all of the following properties: 1) runlength constraint: the maximum homopolymer run in each codeword is at most ℓ ; 2) GC-content constraint: the GC-content of each codeword is within [0.5−ε, 0.5 + ε] ; 3) error-correction: each codeword is capable of correcting a single deletion, or single insertion, or single substitution error. While various combinations of these properties have been considered in the literature, this work provides generalizations of codes constructions that satisfy all the properties with arbitrary parameters of ℓ and ε. Furthermore, for practical values of ℓ and ε, we show that our encoders achieve higher rates than existing results in the literature and approach capacity.
