Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity are important cryptographic primitives in some stream ciphers. In this paper, two methodologies for constructing minimal binary codes from sets, Boolean functions and vectorial Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity, are proposed. More precisely, a general construction of new minimal codes using minimal codes contained in Reed-Muller codes and sets without nonzero low degree annihilators is presented. The other construction allows us to yield minimal codes from certain subcodes of Reed-Muller codes and vectorial Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity. Via these general constructions, infinite families of minimal binary linear codes of dimension $m$ and length less than or equal to $m(m+1)/2$ are obtained. Besides, a lower bound on the minimum distance of the proposed minimal linear codes is established. Conjectures and open problems are also presented. The results of this paper show that Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity have nice applications in several fields additionally to symmetric cryptography, such as coding theory and secret sharing schemes. The puncturing and shortening techniques are two important approaches to constructing new linear codes from old ones. In the past 70 years, a lot of progress on the puncturing technique has been made, and many works on punctured linear codes have been done. Many families of linear codes with interesting parameters have been obtained with the puncturing technique. However, little research on the shortening technique has been done and there are only a handful references on shortened linear codes. The first objective of this paper is to prove some general theory for shortened linear codes. The second objective is to study some shortened codes of the Hamming codes, Simplex codes, some Reed-Muller codes, and ovoid codes. Eleven families of optimal shortened codes over finite fields are presented in this paper. Linear codes generated by component functions of perfect nonlinear (PN for short) and almost perfect nonlinear (APN for short) functions and the first-order Reed-Muller codes have been an object of intensive study in coding theory. The objective of this paper is to investigate some binary shortened codes of two families of linear codes from APN functions and some $p$ -ary shortened codes associated with PN functions. The weight distributions of these shortened codes and the parameters of their duals are determined. The parameters of these binary codes and $p$ -ary codes are flexible. Many of the codes presented in this paper are optimal or almost optimal. The results of this paper show that the shortening technique is very promising for constructing good codes. Insertion–deletion codes (insdel codes for short) play an important role in synchronization error correction. The higher the minimum insdel distance, the more insdel errors the code can correct. Haeupler and Shahrasbi established the Singleton bound for insdel codes: the minimum insdel distance of any $[n,k]$ linear code over $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ satisfies $d\leq 2n-2k+2$. There have been some constructions of insdel codes through Reed-Solomon codes with high capabilities, but none has come close to this bound. Recently, Do Duc et al. showed that the minimum insdel distance of any $[n,k]$ Reed-Solomon code is no more than $2n-2k$ if $q$ is large enough compared to the code length $n$ ; optimal codes that meet the new bound were also constructed explicitly. The contribution of this paper is twofold. We first show that the minimum insdel distance of any $[n,k]$ linear code over $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ satisfies $d\leq 2n-2k$ if $n > k > 1$. This result improves and generalizes the previously known results in the literature. We then give a sufficient condition under which the minimum insdel distance of a 2-D Reed-Solomon code of length $n$ over $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ is exactly equal to $2n-4$. As a consequence, we show that the sufficient condition is not hard to achieve; we explicitly construct an infinite family of optimal 2-D Reed-Somolom codes meeting the bound. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we formulate the problem to cope with the transmission of extra bits over an existing coded transmission link (referred to as coded payload link) without any cost of extra transmission energy or extra bandwidth. This is possible since a gap to the channel capacity typically exists for a practical code. A new concept, termed as accessible capacity, is introduced to specify the maximum rate at which the superposition transmission of extra bits is reliable and has a negligible effect on the performance of the coded payload link. For a binary-input output-symmetric (BIOS) memoryless channel, the accessible capacity can be characterized as the difference between the channel capacity and the mutual information rate of the coded payload link, which can be numerically evaluated for very short payload codes. For a general payload code, we present a simple lower bound on the accessible capacity, given by the channel capacity minus the coding rate of the payload code. We then focus on the scenarios where low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are implemented for the payload link. We propose to transmit extra bits by random superposition for encoding, and exhaustive search (with the aid of statistical learning) for decoding. We further propose, by establishing an auxiliary channel (called syndrome channel) induced from “zero-forcing” over the binary field, to transmit extra bits with structured codes such as repetition codes and first-order Reed-Muller (RM) codes. The binary quadratic-residue codes and the punctured Reed-Muller codes ${\mathcal {R}}_{2}((m-1)/2, m))$ are two families of binary cyclic codes with parameters $[n, (n+1)/2, d \geq \sqrt {n}]$. These two families of binary cyclic codes are interesting partly due to the fact that their minimum distances have a square-root bound. The objective of this paper is to construct two families of binary cyclic codes of length $2^{m}-1$ and dimension near $2^{m-1}$ with good minimum distances. When $m \geq 3$ is odd, the codes become a family of duadic codes with parameters $[2^{m}-1, 2^{m-1}, d]$ , where $d \geq 2^{(m-1)/2}+1$ if $m \equiv 3 \pmod {4}$ and $d \geq 2^{(m-1)/2}+3$ if $m \equiv 1 \pmod {4}$. Twisted generalized Reed-Solomon (TGRS) codes are a family of codes that contains a large number of maximum distance separable (MDS) codes that are non-equivalent to generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes. In this paper, we characterize a sufficient and necessary condition that a twisted Reed-Solomon (TRS) code with two twists is MDS; give a sufficient and necessary condition that a TGRS code with two twists is self-dual, and present some constructions of self-dual TGRS codes. These self-dual codes are MDS, NMDS or 2-MDS. Furthermore, we study the non-GRS properties of TGRS codes with two twists and prove that these codes are non-GRS in most cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we prove several coordinate-ordering-free upper bounds on the insdel distances of linear codes. Our bounds are stronger than some previous known bounds. We apply these upper bounds to AGFC codes from some cyclic codes and one algebraic-geometric code with any rearrangement of coordinate positions. Reed-Muller codes are error-correcting codes used in many areas related to coding theory, such as electrical engineering and computer science. The binary $r^{th}$ -order Reed-Muller code $RM(r,n)$ can be viewed as the set of all $n$ -variable Boolean functions of algebraic degree at most $r$. Despite the intense work on these codes, many problems are known to be hard (notably, determining their covering radius) and remain open to this day. Fourteen years ago, Carlet and Mesnager improved in [IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, “Improving the Upper Bounds on the Covering Radii of Binary Reed-Muller Codes”, 53(1), 2007] the upper bound on the covering radius of the Reed-Muller code of order 2, and they deduced improved upper bounds on the covering radii of the Reed-Muller codes of higher orders. Until 2021, these upper bounds remained the best ones in the literature. The Reed-Muller code $RM(n-3,n)$ , which corresponds to the dual of the Reed-Muller code $RM(2,n)$ , has attracted much attention. One of the main reasons is that it is precisely the code that has been considered to get the upper bounds derived by Carlet and Mesnager. Those upper bounds have been obtained thanks to the characterization of the codewords of the Reed-Muller code, whose Hamming weights are strictly less than 2.5 times the minimum distance $2^{n-r}$ due to Kasami, Tokura, and Azumi. Despite their impressive work in the seventieth, a more refined study and profound description of those codewords of ${RM}({n-3},{n})$ whose Hamming weight equals 16, and especially 18, seem necessary, as it could help us significantly in improving the covering radius of Reed-Muller codes. In this paper, we push further the known results on the Reed-Muller codes by focusing on the Reed-Muller code ${RM}({n-3},{n})$. We provide a classification of the codewords of weights 16 and 18 of the Reed-Muller code $RM(n-3,n)$. This paper considers “ $\delta $ -almost Reed–Muller codes”, i.e., linear codes spanned by evaluations of all but a $\delta $ fraction of monomials of degree at most $d$. It is shown that for any $\delta > 0$ and any $\varepsilon >0$ , there exists a family of $\delta $ -almost Reed–Muller codes of constant rate that correct $1/2- \varepsilon $ fraction of random errors with high probability. For exact Reed–Muller codes, the analogous result is not known and represents a weaker version of the longstanding conjecture that Reed–Muller codes achieve capacity for random errors (Abbe-Shpilka-Wigderson STOC ’15). Our proof is based on the recent polarization result for Reed–Muller codes, combined with a combinatorial approach to establishing inequalities between the Reed–Muller code entropies. An improved Singleton-type upper bound is presented for the list decoding radius of linear codes, in terms of the code parameters $[n,k,d]$ and the list size $L$. $L$ -MDS codes are then defined as codes that attain this bound (under a slightly stronger notion of list decodability), with 1-MDS codes corresponding to ordinary linear MDS codes. Several properties of such codes are presented; in particular, it is shown that the 2-MDS property is preserved under duality. We describe in detail the interplay between binary symplectic geometry and notions from quantum computation, with the ultimate goal of constructing highly structured codebooks. The Binary Chirps (BCs) are Complex Grassmannian Lines in $N = 2^{m}$ dimensions used in deterministic compressed sensing and random/unsourced multiple access in wireless networks. Their entries are fourth roots of unity and can be described in terms of second order Reed-Muller codes. The Binary Subspace Chirps (BSSCs) are a unique collection of BCs of ranks ranging from $r=0$ to $r = m$ , embedded in $N$ dimensions according to an on-off pattern determined by a rank $r$ binary subspace. This yields a codebook that is asymptotically 2.38 times larger than the codebook of BCs, has the same minimum chordal distance as the codebook of BCs, and the alphabet is minimally extended from $\{\pm 1,\pm i\}$ to $\{\pm 1,\pm i, 0\}$. Equivalently, we show that BSSCs are stabilizer states, and we characterize them as columns of a well-controlled collection of Clifford matrices. By construction, the BSSCs inherit all the properties of BCs, which in turn makes them good candidates for a variety of applications. For applications in wireless communication, we use the rich algebraic structure of BSSCs to construct a low complexity decoding algorithm that is reliable against Gaussian noise. Kim et al. (2021) gave a method to embed a given binary $[n,k]$ code $\mathcal {C}\,\,(k = 3, 4)$ into a self-orthogonal code of the shortest length which has the same dimension $k$ and minimum distance $d' \ge d(\mathcal {C})$. We extend this result by proposing a new method related to a special matrix, called the self-orthogonality matrix $SO_{k}$ , obtained by shortening a Reed-Muller code ${\mathcal R}(2,k)$. Using this approach, we can extend binary linear codes to many optimal self-orthogonal codes of dimensions 5 and 6. Furthermore, we partially disprove the conjecture (Kim et al. (2021)) by showing that if $31 \le n \le 256$ and $n\equiv 14,22,29 \pmod {31}$ , then there exist optimal $[n], [5]$ codes which are self-orthogonal. We also construct optimal self-orthogonal $[n], [6]$ codes when $41 \le n \le 256$ satisfies $n \ne 46, 54, 61$ and $n \equiv \!\!\!\!\!/~7, 14, 22, 29, 38, 45, 53, 60 \pmod {63}$. This work identifies information-theoretic quantities that are closely related to the required list size on average for successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding to implement maximum-likelihood decoding over general binary memoryless symmetric (BMS) channels. It also provides upper and lower bounds for these quantities that can be computed efficiently for very long codes. For the binary erasure channel (BEC), we provide a simple method to estimate the mean accurately via density evolution. The analysis shows how to modify, e.g., Reed-Muller codes, to improve the performance when practical list sizes, e.g., $L\in {[{8, 1024}]}$ , are adopted. Exemplary constructions with block lengths $N\in \{128,512\}$ outperform polar codes of 5G over the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel. It is further shown that there is a concentration around the mean of the logarithm of the required list size for sufficiently large block lengths, over discrete-output BMS channels. We provide the probability mass functions (p.m.f.s) of this logarithm, over the BEC, for a sequence of the modified RM codes with an increasing block length via simulations, which illustrate that the p.m.f.s concentrate around the estimated mean. We introduce quantum pin codes: a class of quantum CSS codes. Quantum pin codes are a generalization of quantum color codes and Reed-Muller codes and share a lot of their structure and properties. Pin codes have gauge operators, an unfolding procedure and their stabilizers form so-called $\ell $ -orthogonal spaces meaning that the joint overlap between any $\ell $ stabilizer elements is always even. This last feature makes them interesting for devising magic-state distillation protocols, for instance by using puncturing techniques. We study examples of these codes and their properties. We study generalized covering radii, a fundamental property of linear codes that characterizes the trade-off between storage, latency, and access in linear data-query protocols such as PIR. We prove lower and upper bounds on the generalized covering radii of Reed-Muller codes, as well as finding their exact value in certain extreme cases. With the application to linear data-query protocols in mind, we also construct a covering algorithm that gets as input a set of points in space, and find a corresponding set of codewords from the Reed-Muller code that are jointly not farther away from the input than the upper bound on the generalized covering radius of the code. In this work, we present linear exact repair schemes for one or two erasures in decreasing monomial-Cartesian codes (DM-CC), a family of codes which provides a framework for polar codes. In the case of two erasures, the positions of the erasures should satisfy a certain restriction. We present families of augmented Reed-Muller (ARM) and augmented Cartesian codes (ACar) which are families of evaluation codes obtained by strategically adding vectors to Reed-Muller and Cartesian codes, respectively. We develop repair schemes for one or two erasures for these families of augmented codes. Unlike the repair scheme for two erasures of DM-CC, the repair scheme for two erasures for the augmented codes has no restrictions on the positions of the erasures. When the dimension and base field are fixed, we give examples where ARM and ACar codes provide a lower bandwidth (resp., bitwidth) in comparison with Reed-Solomon (resp., Hermitian) codes. When the length and base field are fixed, we give examples where ACar codes provide a lower bandwidth in comparison with ARM. We present methods for computing the distance from a Boolean polynomial on $m$ variables of degree $m-3$ (i.e., a member of the Reed–Muller code $RM(m-3, m)$) to the space of lower-degree polynomials ($RM(m-4, m)$). The methods give verifiable certificates for both the lower and upper bounds on this distance. By applying these methods to representative lists of polynomials, we show that the covering radius of $RM(4,8)$ in $RM(5,8)$ is 26 and the covering radius of $RM(5,9)$ in $RM(6,9)$ is between 28 and 32 inclusive, and we get improved lower bounds for higher $m$. We also apply our methods to various polynomials in the literature, thereby improving the known bounds on the distance from 2-resilient polynomials to $RM(m-4, m)$. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Let Rq(r,n) be the rth order q-ary Reed-Muller code of length qn, which is the set of functions from Fqn to Fq represented by polynomials of degree ≤ r in Fq[X1, . . . , Xn]. The affine linear group AGL(n,Fq) acts naturally on Rq(r,n). We derive two formulas concerning the number of orbits of this action: (i) an explicit formula for the number of AGL orbits of Rq(n(q−1),n), and (ii) an asymptotic formula for the number of AGL orbits of R2(n,n)/R2(1,n). The number of AGL orbits of R2(n,n) has been numerically computed by several authors for n ≤ 31; the binary case of result (i) is a theoretic solution to the question.
