We consider the problem of communicating over a channel that randomly “tears” the message block into small pieces of different sizes and shuffles them. For the binary torn-paper channel with block length $n$ and pieces of length ${\mathrm{ Geometric}}(p_{n})$ , we characterize the capacity as $C = e^{-\alpha }$ , where $\alpha = \lim _{n\to \infty } p_{n} \log n$. Our results show that the case of ${\mathrm{ Geometric}}(p_{n})$ -length fragments and the case of deterministic length- $(1/p_{n})$ fragments are qualitatively different and, surprisingly, the capacity of the former is larger. Intuitively, this is due to the fact that, in the random fragments case, large fragments are sometimes observed, which boosts the capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The “carbon copy onto dirty paper” (CCDP) channel is the compound “writing on dirty paper” channel in which the channel output is obtained as the sum of the channel input, white Gaussian noise and a Gaussian state sequence randomly selected among a set possible realizations. The transmitter has non-causal knowledge of the set of possible state sequences but does not know which sequence is selected to produce the channel output. We study the capacity of the CCDP channel for two scenarios: 1) the state sequences are independent and identically distributed; and 2) the state sequences are scaled versions of the same sequence. In the first scenario, we show that a combination of superposition coding, time-sharing, and Gel’fand-Pinsker binning is sufficient to approach the capacity to within 3 bits per channel use for any number of possible state realizations. In the second scenario, we derive capacity to within 4 bits per channel use for the case of two possible state sequences. This result is extended to the CCDP channel with any number of possible state sequences under certain conditions on the scaling parameters, which we denote as “strong fading” regime. This paper studies the second-order coding rates for memoryless channels with a state sequence known non-causally at the encoder. In the case of finite alphabets, an achievability result is obtained using constant-composition random coding, and by using a small fraction of the block to transmit the empirical distribution of the state sequence. For error probabilities less than 0.5, it is shown that the second-order rate improves on an existing one based on independent and identically distributed random coding. In the Gaussian case (dirty paper coding) with an almost-sure power constraint, an achievability result is obtained using random coding over the surface of a sphere, and using a small fraction of the block to transmit a quantized description of the state power. Recently, there has been a lot of success in using the deterministic approach to provide approximate characterization of Gaussian network capacity. In this paper, we take a deterministic view and revisit the problem of wiretap channel with side information. A precise characterization of the secrecy capacity is obtained for a linear deterministic model, which naturally suggests a coding scheme which we show to achieve the secrecy capacity of the degraded Gaussian model (dubbed as “secret writing on dirty paper”) to within half a bit. We derive the capacity region of the two-user dirty-paper Gaussian multiaccess channel (MAC) with conferencing encoders. In this MAC, prior to each transmission block, the transmitters can hold a conference in which they can communicate with each other over error-free bit pipes of given capacities. The received signal suffers not only from additive Gaussian noise but also from additive interference, which is known noncausally to the transmitters but not to the receiver. The additive interference is modeled as Gaussian or uniform over a sphere. We show that the interference can be perfectly mitigated, i.e., that the capacity region without interference can also be achieved in its presence. This holds irrespective of whether the transmitters learn the interference before or after the conference. It follows as a corollary that also for the MAC with degraded message sets, the interference can be perfectly mitigated if it is known noncausally to the transmitters. To derive our results, we generalize Costa's single-user writing-on-dirty-paper achievability result to channels with dependent interference and not-necessarily Gaussian noise. A wideband Rayleigh fading channel is considered with causal channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter and no receiver CSI. A simple orthogonal code with energy detection rule at the receiver (similar to pulse position modulation in IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 46, no. 4, Apr. 2000 and IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, vol. 52 no. 5, May 2006) is shown to achieve the capacity of this channel in the wideband limit. This strategy transmits energy only when the channel gain exceeds a threshold, hence only needs causal transmitter CSI. In the wideband limit, this capacity without any receiver CSI is the same as the capacity with full receiver CSI, which is proportional to the logarithm of the bandwidth. Similar threshold-based pulse position modulation is shown to achieve the capacity per unit cost of the dirty-tape channel (dirty paper channel with causal transmitter CSI and no receiver CSI), which equals its capacity per unit cost with full receiver CSI. Then, a general discrete channel with i.i.d. states is considered. Each input has an associated cost and a zero cost input “0” exists. The channel state is assumed to be known at the transmitter in a causal manner. Capacity per unit cost is found for this channel and a simple orthogonal code is shown to achieve this capacity. Later, a novel orthogonal coding scheme is proposed for the case of causal transmitter CSI and a condition for equivalence of capacity per unit cost for causal and noncausal transmitter CSI is derived. In this paper, we consider encoding strategies for the Z-channel with noiseless feedback. We analyze the combinatorial setting where the maximum number of errors inflicted by an adversary is proportional to the number of transmissions, which goes to infinity. Without feedback, it is known that the rate of optimal asymmetric-error-correcting codes for the error fraction $\tau \ge 1/4$ vanishes as the blocklength grows. In this paper, we give an efficient feedback encoding scheme with $n$ transmissions that achieves a positive rate for any fraction of errors $\tau < 1$ and $n\to \infty $. In this paper, we characterize the capacity of a new class of discrete memoryless multicast networks having a tree topology. For achievability, a novel coding scheme is constructed where some relays employ a combination of decode-and-forward and compress-and-forward and the other relays perform a random binning such that codebook constructions and relay operations are independent for each node and do not depend on the network topology. For converse, a new technique of iteratively manipulating inequalities exploiting the tree topology is used. In this paper, we extend the localized error correction code introduced by L. A. Bassalygo and coworkers from Hamming space to projective space. For constant dimensional localized error correction codes in projective space, we have a lower bound and an upper bound of the capacity, which are asymptotically tight when z< x\leq n-z\over 2, where x, z, and n are dimensions of codewords, error configurations, and the ground space, respectively. This paper studies the multiple-access channel (MAC) with rate-limited feedback. The channel output is encoded into one stream of bits, which is provided causally to the two users at the channel input. An achievable rate region for this setup is derived, based on superposition of information, block Markov coding, and coding with various degrees of side information for the feedback link. The suggested region coincides with the Cover–Leung inner bound for large feedback rates. The result is then extended for cases where there is only a feedback link to one of the transmitters, and for a more general case where there are two separate feedback links to both transmitters. We compute achievable regions for the Gaussian MAC and for the binary erasure MAC. The Gaussian region is computed for the case of common rate-limited feedback, whereas the region for the binary erasure MAC is computed for one-sided feedback. This paper studies the downlink of a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) in which a centralized processor (CP) communicates with mobile users through base stations (BSs) that are connected to the CP via finite-capacity fronthaul links. Information theoretically, the downlink of a C-RAN is modeled as a two-hop broadcast-relay network. Among the various transmission and relaying strategies for such model, this paper focuses on the compression strategy, in which the CP centrally encodes the signals to be broadcast jointly by the BSs, then compresses and sends these signals to the BSs through the fronthaul links. We characterize an achievable rate region for a generalized compression strategy with Marton’s multicoding for broadcasting and multivariate compression for fronthaul transmission. We then compare this rate region with the distributed decode-forward (DDF) scheme, which achieves the capacity of the general relay networks to within a constant gap, and show that the difference lies in that DDF performs Marton’s multicoding and multivariate compression jointly as opposed to successively as in the compression strategy. A main result of this paper is that under the assumption that the fronthaul links are subject to a sum capacity constraint, this difference is immaterial; so, for the Gaussian network, the compression strategy based on successive encoding can already achieve the capacity region of the C-RAN to within a constant gap, where the gap is independent of the channel parameters and the power constraints at the BSs. As a further result, for C-RAN under individual fronthaul constraints, this paper also establishes that the compression strategy can achieve to within a constant gap to the sum capacity. In general coding theory, we often assume that error is observed in transferring or storing encoded symbols, while the process of encoding itself is error-free. Motivated by recent applications of coding theory, in this paper, we consider the case where the process of encoding is distributed and prone to error. We introduce the problem of distributed encoding, comprised of a set of $K \in \mathbb {N}$ isolated source nodes and $N \in \mathbb {N}$ encoding nodes. Each source node has one symbol from a finite field, which is sent to each of the encoding nodes. Each encoding node stores an encoded symbol from the same field, as a function of the received symbols. However, some of the source nodes are controlled by the adversary and may send different symbols to different encoding nodes. Depending on the number of the adversarial nodes, denoted by $\beta \in \mathbb {N}$ , and the cardinality of the set of symbols that each one generates, denoted by $v \in \mathbb {N}$ , the process of decoding from the encoded symbols could be impossible. Assume that a decoder connects to an arbitrary subset of $t \in \mathbb {N}$ encoding nodes and wants to decode the symbols of the honest nodes correctly, without necessarily identifying the sets of honest and adversarial nodes. An important characteristic of a distributed encoding system is $t^{*} \in \mathbb {N}$ , the minimum of such $t$ , which is a function of $K$ , $N$ , $\beta $ , and $v$. In this paper, we study the distributed linear encoding system, i.e. one in which the encoding nodes use linear coding. We show that $t^{*}_{\textrm {Linear}}=K+2\beta (v-1)$ , if $N\ge K+2\beta (v-1)$ , and $t^{*}_{\textrm {Linear}}=N$ , if $N\le K+2\beta (v-1)$. In order to achieve $t^{*}_{\textrm {Linear}}$ , we use random linear coding and show that in any feasible solution that the decoder finds, the messages of the honest nodes are decoded correctly. In order to prove the converse of the fundamental limit, we show that when the adversary behaves in a particular way, it can always confuse the decoder between two feasible solutions that differ in the message of at least one honest node. This paper investigates the Gaussian state-dependent interference channel (IC) and Z-IC, in which two receivers are corrupted respectively by two different but correlated states that are noncausally known to two transmitters but are unknown to the receivers. Three interference regimes are studied, and the capacity region boundary or the sum capacity boundary is characterized either fully or partially under various channel parameters. In particular, the impact of the correlation between states on cancellation of state and interference as well as achievability of capacity is explored with numerical illustrations. For the very strong interference regime, the capacity region is achieved by the scheme where the two transmitters implement a cooperative dirty paper coding. For the strong but not very strong interference regime, the sum-rate capacity is characterized by rate splitting, layered dirty paper coding, and successive cancellation. For the weak interference regime, the sum-rate capacity is achieved via dirty paper coding individually at two receivers as well as treating interference as noise. In wireless networks, the link connectivity may be intermittent due to shadowing, burstiness of data arrival, or uncoordinated resource allocation. In this paper, we model the intermittence of links as Bernoulli distributed random channel states, termed intermittence channel states, and study the impact of the corresponding channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel (BC). Moreover, due to the heterogeneous timeliness of intermittence channel states, the CSIT considered in this paper is hybrid. More specifically, the CSIT of each link can be perfectly (causally or non-causally) available, delayed, or not available. When the links are connected, we adopt a general setting that the received signal-to-noise ratios can be different. Our contribution is the characterization of the capacity regions of intermittent Gaussian BC to within bounded gaps for all combinations of hybrid CSIT, except for scenario DN (delayed CSIT of receiver 1, no CSIT of receiver 2). For scenario DN, we propose an opportunistic physical layer network coding scheme that achieves a strictly larger degree-of-freedom (DoF) region than the no-CSIT DoF region. As a corollary, single-user CSIT is able to increase the sum DoF for intermittent Gaussian BC (also the capacity region for the erasure BC, as a by-product). This result is in sharp contrast to the recent negative result by Davoodi and Jafar, where it is shown that for fast-fading multiple-input single-output BC with continuous channel states, single-user CSIT does not help at all in terms of sum DoF. A functional $k$ -batch code of dimension $s$ consists of $n$ servers storing linear combinations of $s$ linearly independent information bits. Any multiset request of size $k$ of linear combinations (or requests) of the information bits can be recovered by $k$ disjoint subsets of the servers. The goal under this paradigm is to find the minimum number of servers for given values of $s$ and $k$. A recent conjecture states that for any $k=2^{s-1}$ requests the optimal solution requires $2^{s}-1$ servers. This conjecture is verified for $s \leqslant 5$ but previous work could only show that codes with $n=2^{s}-1$ servers can support a solution for $k=2^{s-2} + 2^{s-4} + \left \lfloor{ \frac { 2^{s/2}}{\sqrt {24}} }\right \rfloor $ requests. This paper reduces this gap and shows the existence of codes for $k=\lfloor \frac {5}{6}2^{s-1} \rfloor - s$ requests with the same number of servers. Another construction in the paper provides a code with $n=2^{s+1}-2$ servers and $k=2^{s}$ requests, which is an optimal result. The state-dependent Gaussian interference channel (IC) and Z-IC are investigated, in which two receivers are corrupted by the same but differently scaled states. The state sequence is noncausally known at both transmitters, but not known at either receiver. Three interference regimes are studied, i.e., the very strong, strong, and weak regimes. In the very strong regime, the capacity region is characterized under certain channel parameters by designing a cooperative dirty paper coding between the two transmitters to fully cancel the state. In the strong regime, points on the capacity region boundary are characterized under certain channel parameters by designing an achievable scheme based on rate splitting, layered dirty paper coding, and successive state cancellation. In the weak regime, the sum capacity is obtained by independent dirty paper coding at two transmitters. For all the above regimes, the capacity achieves that of the IC/Z-IC without state. Comparison between the state-dependent regular IC and the Z-IC suggests that even with one interference-free link, the Z-IC does not necessarily perform better, because dirty paper coded interference in the regular IC facilitates to cancel the state through the cooperative dirty paper coding between the transmitters. The paper is devoted to the problem of erasure coding in distributed storage. We consider a model of storage that assumes that nodes are organized into equally sized groups, called racks, that within each group the nodes can communicate freely without taxing the system bandwidth, and that the only information transmission that counts is the one between the racks. This assumption implies that the nodes within each of the racks can collaborate before providing information to the failed node. The main emphasis of the paper is on code construction for this storage model. We present an explicit family of maximum distance separable (MDS) array codes that support recovery of a single failed node from any number of helper racks using the minimum possible amount of inter-rack communication(such codes are said to provide optimal repair). The codes are constructed over finite fields of size comparable to the code length. We also derive a bound on the number of symbols accessed at helper nodes for the purposes of repair, and construct a code family that approaches this bound, while still maintaining the optimal repair property. Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are widely used in distributed storage systems. In this paper, we study the repair bandwidth and sub-packetization size of RS codes. The repair bandwidth is defined as the amount of transmitted information from surviving nodes to a failed node. The RS code can be viewed as a polynomial over a finite field $GF(q^\ell)$ evaluated at a set of points, where $\ell $ is called the sub-packetization size. Smaller bandwidth reduces the network traffic in distributed storage, and smaller $\ell $ facilitates the implementation of RS codes with lower complexity. Recently, Guruswami and Wootters proposed a repair method for RS codes when the evaluation points are the entire finite field. While the sub-packetization size can be arbitrarily small, the repair bandwidth is higher than the minimum storage regenerating (MSR) bound. Tamo, Ye, and Barg achieved the MSR bound but the sub-packetization size grows faster than the exponential function of the number of the evaluation points. In this paper, we present code constructions and repair schemes that extend these results to accommodate different sizes of the evaluation points. In other words, we design schemes that provide points in between. These schemes provide a flexible tradeoff between the sub-packetization size and the repair bandwidth. Quantum readout provides a general framework for formulating statistical discrimination of quantum channels. Several paths have been taken for such this problem. However, there is much to be done in the avenue of optimizing channel discrimination using classical codes. At least two open questions can be pointed out: how to construct low complexity encoding schemes that are interesting for channel discrimination and, more importantly, how to develop capacity-achieving protocols. This paper aims at presenting a solution to these questions using polar codes. Firstly, we characterize the information rate and reliability parameter of the channels under polar encoding. We also show that the error probability of the scheme proposed decays exponentially with the square root of the code length. This paper considers secret-key generation between several agents and a base station that observe independent and identically distributed realizations of correlated random variables. Each agent wishes to generate the longest possible individual key with the base station by means of public communication. All keys must be jointly kept secret from all external entities. In this many-to-one secret-key generation setting, it can be shown that the agents can take advantage of a collective protocol to increase the sum rate of their generated keys. However, when each agent is only interested in maximizing its own secret-key rate, agents may be unwilling to participate in a collective protocol. Furthermore, when such a collective protocol is employed, how to fairly allocate individual key rates arises as a valid issue. This paper studies the tension between cooperation and self-interest with a game-theoretic treatment. This paper establishes that cooperation is in the best interest of all individualistic agents and that there exist individual secret-key rate allocations that incentivize the agents to follow the protocol. This paper investigates the maximal secret communication rate over a wiretap channel subject to reliability and secrecy constraints at a given blocklength. New achievability and converse bounds are derived, which are uniformly tighter than existing bounds, and lead to the tightest bounds on the second-order coding rate for discrete memoryless and Gaussian wiretap channels. The exact second-order coding rate is established for semi-deterministic wiretap channels, which characterizes the optimal tradeoff between reliability and secrecy in the finite-blocklength regime. Underlying our achievability bounds are two new privacy amplification results, which not only refine the classic privacy amplification results, but also achieve secrecy under the stronger semantic-security metric. The repair problem in distributed storage addresses recovery of the data encoded using an erasure code, for instance, a Reed–Solomon (RS) code. We consider the problem of repairing a single node or multiple nodes in RS-coded storage systems using the smallest possible amount of inter-nodal communication. According to the cut-set bound, communication cost of repairing $h\geqslant 1$ failed nodes for an $(n,k=n-r)$ maximum distance separable (MDS) code using $d$ helper nodes is at least $dhl/(d+h-k)$ , where $l$ is the size of the node. Guruswami and Wootters (2016) initiated the study of efficient repair of RS codes, showing that they can be repaired using a smaller bandwidth than under the trivial approach. At the same time, their work as well as follow-up papers stopped short of constructing RS codes (or any scalar MDS codes) that meet the cut-set bound with equality. In this paper, we construct the families of RS codes that achieve the cut-set bound for repair of one or several nodes. In the single-node case, we present the RS codes of length $n$ over the field ${\mathbb F}_{q^{l}}, l=\exp ((1+o(1))n\log n)$ that meet the cut-set bound. We also prove an almost matching lower bound on $l$ , showing that super-exponential scaling is both necessary and sufficient for scalar MDS codes to achieve the cut-set bound using linear repair schemes. For the case of multiple nodes, we construct a family of RS codes that achieve the cut-set bound universally for the repair of any $h=1,2, {\dots },r$ failed nodes from any subset of $d$ helper nodes, $k\leqslant d\leqslant n-h$. In this paper, a new model for arbitrarily varying classical-quantum channels is proposed. In this model, a jammer has side information. The communication scenario in which a jammer can select only classical inputs as a jamming sequence is considered in the first part of the paper. This situation corresponds to the standard model of arbitrarily varying classical-quantum channels. Two scenarios are considered. In the first scenario, the jammer knows the channel input, while in the second scenario the jammer knows both the channel input and the message. The transmitter and receiver share a secret random key with a vanishing key rate. The capacity for both average and maximum error criteria for both scenarios is determined in this paper. A strong converse is also proved. It is shown that all these corresponding capacities are equal, which means that additionally revealing the message to the jammer does not change the capacity. The communication scenario with a fully quantum jammer is considered in the second part of the paper. This paper studies a two-user state-dependent Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC) with state noncausally known at one encoder. Two scenarios are considered: 1) each user wishes to communicate an independent message to the common receiver; and 2) the two encoders send a common message to the receiver and the non-cognitive encoder (i.e., the encoder that does not know the state) sends an independent individual message (this model is also known as the MAC with degraded message sets). For both scenarios, new outer bounds on the capacity region are derived, which improve uniformly over the best known outer bounds. In the first scenario, the two corner points of the capacity region as well as the sum rate capacity are established, and it is shown that a single-letter solution is adequate to achieve both the corner points and the sum rate capacity. Furthermore, the full capacity region is characterized in situations in which the sum rate capacity is equal to the capacity of the helper problem. The proof exploits the optimal-transportation idea of Polyanskiy and Wu (which was used previously to establish an outer bound on the capacity region of the interference channel) and the worst case Gaussian noise result for the case in which the input and the noise are dependent. This paper considers structure learning from data with $n$ samples of $p$ variables, assuming that the structure is a forest, using the Chow–Liu algorithm. Specifically, for incomplete data, we construct two model selection algorithms that complete in $O(p^{2})$ steps: one obtains a forest with the maximum posterior probability given the data and the other obtains a forest that converges to the true one as $n$ increases. We show that the two forests are generally different when some values are missing. In addition, we present estimations for benchmark data sets to demonstrate that both algorithms work in realistic situations. Moreover, we derive the conditional entropy provided that no value is missing, and we evaluate the per-sample expected redundancy for the universal coding of incomplete data in terms of the number of non-missing samples. This paper formulates a distributed computation problem, where a master asks ${\mathsf N}$ distributed workers to compute a linearly separable function. The task function can be expressed as ${\mathsf K}_{\mathrm{ c}}$ linear combinations of ${\mathsf K}$ messages, where each message is a function of one dataset. Our objective is to find the optimal tradeoff between the computation cost (number of uncoded datasets assigned to each worker) and the communication cost (number of symbols the master must download), such that from the answers of any ${\mathsf N}_{\mathrm{ r}}$ out of ${\mathsf N}$ workers the master can recover the task function with high probability, where the coefficients of the ${\mathsf K}_{\mathrm{ c}}$ linear combinations are uniformly i.i.d. over some large enough finite field. The formulated problem can be seen as a generalized version of some existing problems, such as distributed gradient coding and distributed linear transform. In this paper, we consider the specific case where the computation cost is minimum, and propose novel achievability schemes and converse bounds for the optimal communication cost. Achievability and converse bounds coincide for some system parameters; when they do not match, we prove that the achievable distributed computing scheme is optimal under the constraint of a widely used ‘cyclic assignment’ scheme on the datasets. Our results also show that when ${\mathsf K}= {\mathsf N}$ , with the same communication cost as the optimal distributed gradient coding scheme proposed by Tandon et al. from which the master recovers one linear combination of ${\mathsf K}$ messages, our proposed scheme can let the master recover any additional ${\mathsf N}_{\mathrm{ r}}-1$ independent linear combinations of messages with high probability. Volume estimates of metric balls in manifolds find diverse applications in information and coding theory. In this paper, new results for the volume of a metric ball in unitary group are derived via tools from random matrix theory. The first result is an integral representation of the exact volume, which involves a Toeplitz determinant of Bessel functions. A simple but accurate limiting volume formula is then obtained by invoking Szegő’s strong limit theorem for large Toeplitz matrices. The derived asymptotic volume formula enables analytical evaluation of some coding-theoretic bounds of unitary codes. In particular, the Gilbert–Varshamov lower bound and the Hamming upper bound on the cardinality as well as the resulting bounds on code rate and minimum distance are derived. Moreover, bounds on the scaling law of code rate are found. This paper is about deriving lower bounds on the error exponents for the two-user interference channel under the random coding regime for several ensembles. Specifically, we first analyze the standard random coding ensemble, where the codebooks are comprised of independently and identically distributed (i.i.d.) codewords. For this ensemble, we focus on optimum decoding, which is in contrast to other, suboptimal decoding rules that have been used in the literature (e.g., joint typicality decoding, treating interference as noise, and so on). The fact that the interfering signal is a codeword, rather than an i.i.d. noise process, complicates the application of conventional techniques of performance analysis of the optimum decoder. In addition, unfortunately, these conventional techniques result in loose bounds. Using analytical tools rooted in statistical physics, as well as advanced union bounds, we derive single-letter formulas for the random coding error exponents. We compare our results with the best known lower bound on the error exponent, and show that our exponents can be strictly better. Then, in the second part of this paper, we consider more complicated coding ensembles and find a lower bound on the error exponent associated with the celebrated Han–Kobayashi random coding ensemble, which is based on superposition coding. The state-dependent point-to-point Gaussian channel with a helper is first studied, in which a transmitter communicates with a receiver via a state-corrupted channel. The state is not known to the transmitter nor to the receiver, but known to a helper noncausally, which then wishes to assist the receiver to cancel the state. Differently from the previous work that characterized the capacity only in the infinite state power regime, this paper explores the general case with arbitrary state power. A lower bound on the capacity is derived based on an achievable scheme that integrates direct state subtraction and single-bin dirty paper coding. By analyzing this lower bound and further comparing it with the existing upper bounds, the capacity of the channel is characterized for a wide range of channel parameters. Such an idea of characterizing the capacity is further extended to study the two-user state-dependent multiple access channel with a helper. By comparing the derived inner and outer bounds, the channel parameters are partitioned into appropriate cases, and for each case, either segments on the capacity region boundary or the full capacity region are characterized. In its most elementary form, compressed sensing studies the design of decoding algorithms to recover a sufficiently sparse vector or code from a lower dimensional linear measurement vector. Typically it is assumed that the decoder has access to the encoder matrix, which in the combinatorial case is sparse and binary. In this paper we consider the problem of designing a decoder to recover a set of sparse codes from their linear measurements alone, that is without access to encoder matrix. To this end we study the matrix factorisation task of recovering both the encoder and sparse coding matrices from the associated linear measurement matrix. The contribution of this paper is a computationally efficient decoding algorithm, Decoder-Expander Based Factorisation, with strong performance guarantees. Under mild assumptions on the sparse coding matrix and by deploying a novel random encoder matrix, we prove that Decoder-Expander Based Factorisation recovers both the encoder and sparse coding matrix at the optimal measurement rate with high probability and from a near optimal number of measurement vectors. In addition, our experiments demonstrate the efficacy and computational efficiency of our algorithm in practice. Beyond compressed sensing, our results may be of interest for researchers working in areas as diverse as linear sketching, coding theory, matrix compression and dictionary learning. Content delivery networks store information distributed across multiple servers, so as to balance the load and avoid unrecoverable losses in case of node or disk failures. Coded caching has been shown to be a useful technique which can reduce peak traffic rates by pre-fetching popular content at the end users and encoding transmissions so that different users can extract different information from the same packet. On one hand, distributed storage limits the capability of combining content from different servers into a single message, causing performance losses in coded caching schemes. But, on the other hand, the inherent redundancy existing in distributed storage systems can be used to improve the performance of those schemes through parallelism. This paper designs coded caching and delivery schemes tailored towards systems where the library is distributed across multiple servers, possibly with some redundancy in the form of maximum distance separable (MDS) erasure codes. Different schemes are proposed based on the capacity of the users’ caches, as well as the number of parity servers. The main focus is on scenarios with one (RAID-4) or two (RAID-6) parity servers, but the paper also includes simple extensions for cases with more than two or no parity servers at all. An additive white Gaussian noise energy-harvesting channel with an infinite-sized battery is considered. The energy arrival process is modeled as a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables. The channel capacity $\frac {1}{2}\log (1+P)$ is achievable by the so-called best-effort and save-and-transmit schemes where $P$ denotes the battery recharge rate. This paper analyzes the save-and-transmit scheme whose transmit power is strictly less than $P$ and the best-effort scheme as a special case of save-and-transmit without a saving phase. In the finite blocklength regime, we obtain new non-asymptotic achievable rates for these schemes that approach the capacity with gaps vanishing at rates proportional to $1/\sqrt {n}$ and $({(\log n)/n})^{1/2}$ respectively where $n$ denotes the blocklength. The proof technique involves analyzing the escape probability of a Markov process. When $P$ is sufficiently large, we show that allowing the transmit power to back off from $P$ can improve the performance for save-and-transmit. The results are extended to a block energy arrival model where the length of each energy block $L$ grows sublinearly in $n$. We show that the save-and-transmit and best-effort schemes achieve coding rates that approach the capacity with gaps vanishing at rates proportional to $\sqrt {L/n}$ and $({\max \{\log n, L\}/n})^{1/2}$ , respectively. Uplink-downlink duality refers to the fact that under a sum-power constraint, the capacity regions of a Gaussian multiple-access channel and a Gaussian broadcast channel with Hermitian transposed channel matrices are identical. This paper generalizes this result to a cooperative cellular network, in which remote access-points are deployed as relays in serving the users under the coordination of a central processor (CP). In this model, the users and the relays are connected over noisy wireless links, while the relays and the CP are connected over noiseless but rate-limited fronthaul links. Based on a Lagrangian technique, this paper establishes a duality relationship between such a multiple-access relay channel and broadcast relay channel, under the assumption that the relays use compression-based strategies. Specifically, we show that under the same total transmit power constraint and individual fronthaul rate constraints, the achievable rate regions of the Gaussian multiple-access and broadcast relay channels are identical, when either independent compression or Wyner-Ziv and multivariate compression strategies are used. The key observations are that if the beamforming vectors at the relays are fixed, the sum-power minimization problems under the achievable rate and fronthaul constraints in both the uplink and the downlink can be transformed into either a linear programming or a semidefinite programming problem depending on the compression technique, and that the uplink and downlink problems are Lagrangian duals of each other. Moreover, the dual variables corresponding to the downlink rate constraints become the uplink powers; the dual variables corresponding to the downlink fronthaul constraints become the uplink quantization noises. Lattices possess elegant mathematical properties which have been previously used in the literature to show that structured codes can be efficient in a variety of communication scenarios, including coding for the additive white Gaussian noise channel, dirty-paper channel, Wyner–Ziv coding, coding for relay networks, and so forth. We consider the family of single-transmitter multiple-receiver Gaussian channels, where the source transmits a set of common messages to all the receivers (multicast scenario), and each receiver has coded side information, i.e., prior information in the form of linear combinations of the messages. This channel model is motivated by applications to multi-terminal networks, where the nodes may have access to coded versions of the messages from previous signal hops or through orthogonal channels. The capacity of this channel is known and follows from the work of Tuncel (2006), which is based on random coding arguments. In this paper, following the approach of Erez and Zamir, we design lattice codes for this family of channels when the source messages are symbols from a finite field \mathbb Fp of prime size. Our coding scheme utilizes Construction A lattices designed over the same prime field \mathbb Fp , and uses algebraic binning at the decoders to expurgate the channel code and obtain good lattice subcodes, for every possible set of linear combinations available as side information. In the scalar dirty multiple-access channel, in addition to Gaussian noise, two additive interference signals are present, each known non-causally to a single transmitter. It was shown by Philosof et al. that for strong interferences, an independent identically distributed ensemble of codes does not achieve the capacity region. Rather, a structured-codes approach was presented that was shown to be optimal in the limit of high signal-to-noise ratios, where the sum capacity is dictated by the minimal (“bottleneck”) channel gain. In this paper, we consider the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) variant of this setting. In order to incorporate structured codes in this case, one can utilize matrix decompositions that transform the channel into effective parallel scalar dirty multiple-access channels. This approach, however, suffers from a “bottleneck” effect for each effective scalar channel and, therefore, the achievable rates strongly depend on the chosen decomposition. It is shown that a recently proposed decomposition, where the diagonals of the effective channel matrices are equal up to a scaling factor, is optimal at high signal-to-noise ratios, under an equal rank assumption. This paper studies reconstruction of strings based upon their substrings spectrum. Under this paradigm, it is assumed that all substrings of some fixed length are received and the goal is to reconstruct the string. While many existing works assumed that substrings are received error free, we follow in this paper the noisy setup of this problem that was first studied by Gabrys and Milenkovic. The goal of this study is twofold. First we study the setup in which not all substrings in the multispectrum are received, and then we focus on the case where the read substrings are not error free. In each case we provide specific code constructions of strings that their reconstruction is guaranteed even in the presence of failure in either model. We present efficient encoding and decoding maps and analyze the cardinality of the code constructions, while studying the cases where the rates of our codes approach 1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A coding scheme for transmission of a bit maps a given bit to a sequence of channel inputs (called the codeword associated with the transmitted bit). In this paper, we study the problem of designing the best code for a discrete Poisson channel with memory (under peak-power and total-power constraints). The outputs of a discrete Poisson channel with memory are Poisson distributed random variables with a mean comprising of a fixed additive noise and a linear combination of past input symbols. Assuming a maximum-likelihood (ML) decoder, we search for a codebook that has the smallest possible error probability. This problem is challenging because error probability of a code does not have a closed-form analytical expression. For the case of having only a total-power constraint, the optimal code structure is obtained, provided that the blocklength is greater than the memory length of the channel. For the case of having only a peak-power constraint, the optimal code is derived for arbitrary memory and blocklength in the high-power regime. For the case of having both the peak-power and total-power constraints, the optimal code is derived for memoryless Poisson channels when both the total-power and the peak-power bounds are large. This paper studies low-latency streaming codes for the multi-hop network. The source transmits a sequence of messages to a destination through a chain of relays, and requires the destination to reconstruct each message by its deadline. We assume that each communication link is subjected to a certain maximum number of packet erasures. The case of a single relay (a three-node network) was considered in Fong et al. (2020). A coding scheme known as symbol-wise decode and forward was proposed. In the present work, we propose an alternative scheme that is different from Fong et al. (2020) and still achieves the same rate as in Fong et al. (2020) for the one hop case as the field-size goes to infinity. Furthermore, our proposed scheme naturally generalizes to the case of multiple-relay nodes yielding new achievable rates for this setting. The main difference with Fong et al. (2020) is that our proposed scheme exploits the ability of the relay nodes to adapt the transmission based on the erasures on the previous link. Hence, we refer to our scheme as “state-dependent” and contrast it with the scheme in Fong et al. (2020) that is state-independent. Our scheme requires the relay nodes to append a header to the transmitted packets, and we show that the size of the header does not depend on the field-size of the code. We also derive an upper bound on the maximal streaming rate achievable over a network with an arbitrary number of relays. We show that this upper bound matches our achievable rate in the special case when the maximal number of erasures on the first link is greater than or equal to the maximal number of erasures on each of the following links, and the field size goes to infinity. In this paper, we consider variable-length coding over the memoryless binary asymmetric channel (BAC) with full noiseless feedback, including the binary symmetric channel (BSC) as a special case. In 2012, Naghshvar et al. introduced a coding scheme, which we refer to as the small-enough-difference (SED) coding scheme. For symmetric binary-input channels, the deterministic variable-length feedback (VLF) code constructed with the SED coding scheme asymptotically achieves both capacity and Burnashev’s optimal error exponent. Building on the work of Naghshvar et al., this paper extends the SED coding scheme to the BAC and develops a non-asymptotic VLF achievability bound that is shown to achieve both capacity and the optimal error exponent. For the specific case of the BSC, we develop an additional non-asymptotic VLF achievability bound using a two-phase analysis that leverages both a submartingale synthesis and a Markov chain time of first passage analysis. The group testing problem consists of determining a small set of defective items from a larger set of items based on tests on groups of items, and is relevant in applications such as medical testing, communication protocols, pattern matching, and many more. While rigorous group testing algorithms have long been known with runtime at least linear in the number of items, a recent line of works has sought to reduce the runtime to ${\mathrm{ poly}}({k} \log {n})$ , where n is the number of items and k is the number of defectives. In this paper, we present such an algorithm for non-adaptive group testing termed bit mixing coding (BMC), which builds on techniques that encode item indices in the test matrix, while incorporating novel ideas based on erasure-correction coding. We show that BMC achieves asymptotically vanishing error probability with ${O}({k} \log {n})$ tests and ${O}({k}^{2} \cdot \log {k} \cdot \log {n})$ runtime, in the limit as ${n} \to \infty $ (with k having an arbitrary dependence on n). This closes an open problem of simultaneously achieving ${\mathrm{ poly}}({k} \log {n})$ decoding time using ${O}({k} \log {n})$ tests without any assumptions on k. The strong secrecy transmission problem of the arbitrarily varying wiretap channel (AVWC) with input and state constraints is investigated in this paper. First, a stochastic-encoder code lower bound of the strong secrecy capacity is established by applying the type argument and Csiszár’s almost independent coloring lemma. Then, a superposition stochastic-encoder code lower bound of the secrecy capacity is provided. The superposition stochastic-encoder code lower bound can be larger than the ordinary stochastic-encoder code lower bound. Random code lower and upper bounds of the secrecy capacity of the AVWC with constraints are further provided. Based on these results, we further consider a special case of the model, namely severely less noisy AVWC, and give the stochastic-encoder code and random code capacities. It is proved that the stochastic-encoder code capacity of the AVWC with constraints is either equal to or strictly smaller than the corresponding random code capacity, which is consistent with the property of the ordinary AVC. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to better illustrate our capacity results. Compared to the soft covering lemma that requires the codewords to be generated i.i.d., our method has more relaxed requirements regarding codebooks. It is proved that the good codebooks for secure transmission can be generated by choosing codewords randomly from a given type set, which is critical when considering the AVWC with constraints. This paper describes new, simple, recursive methods of construction for orientable sequences, i.e. periodic binary sequences in which any $n$ -tuple occurs at most once in a period in either direction. As has been previously described, such sequences have potential applications in automatic position-location systems, where the sequence is encoded onto a surface and a reader needs only examine $n$ consecutive encoded bits to determine its location and orientation on the surface. The only previously described method of construction (due to Dai et al.) is somewhat complex, whereas the new techniques are simple to both describe and implement. The methods of construction cover both the standard ‘infinite periodic’ case, and also the aperiodic, finite sequence, case. A block code is called a locally recoverable code (LRC for short) with $(r,\delta)$ -locality, if subject to any $\delta -1$ erasure failures, every symbol in the encoding can still be recovered by accessing at most $r$ other symbols. Recently, it was discovered by several authors that a $q$ -ary optimal $(r,\delta)$ -LRC, i.e., an LRC achieving the generalized Singleton-type bound, can have length much bigger than $q+1$. This is quite different from the classical $q$ -ary MDS codes where it is conjectured that the code length is upper bounded by $q+1$ (or $q+2$ for some special cases). In this paper, we further investigate constructions of optimal $(r,\delta)$ -LRCs along the line of using parity-check matrices. Inspired by classical Reed-Solomon codes and the work in Jin (2019), we equip parity-check matrices with the Vandermonde structure. It turns out that a parity-check matrix with the Vandermonde structure that produces an optimal LRC must obey certain disjoint property for subsets of $\mathbb {F}_{q}$. We manage to show the existence of these disjoint subsets. Thus, this yields an optimal $(r,\delta)$ -LRC with code length $\Omega \left({q^{\frac {\delta }{2}\left({1+\frac {1}{\lfloor \frac {d-1}{\delta }\rfloor -1}}\right)}}\right)\vphantom {\bigg)_{j}}$ , where $d$ is the minimum distance. In particular, to our surprise, for $\delta =2$ this disjoint condition is equivalent to a well-studied problem in extremal graph theory. With the help of extremal graph theory, we succeed to improve all of the best known results in Guruswami et al. (2018) for $d\geq 7$. Erasure codes are essential for providing efficient resilience against node failures in distributed storage. Typically, an $[n, k]$ erasure code encodes $k$ symbols into $n$ symbols which are then stored in different nodes. Recent work by Kadekodi et al. shows that the failure rates of storage nodes vary significantly over time, and that changing the rate of the code (via a change in $n$ and $k$) in response to such variations provides substantial storage space savings. However, the resource overhead of re-encoding the already encoded data is prohibitively high. We present a new theoretical framework formalizing code conversion—the process of converting data encoded with an $[n^{ I}, k^{ I}]$ code into data encoded with an $[{n^{ F}}, {k^{ F}}]$ code while maintaining desired decodability properties. We then introduce convertible codes, a new class of codes that allow for code conversions in a resource-efficient manner. This paper begins the study on convertible codes by focusing on linear MDS codes and the access cost of conversion. We derive a lower bound on the access cost of conversion and present an explicit optimal construction matching this bound for an important subclass of conversions. Additionally, we propose constructions with low field-size requirement for a broad subset of parameters. We study spatially coupled LDPC codes that allow access to sub-blocks much smaller than the full code block. Sub-block access is realized by a semi-global decoder that decodes a chosen target sub-block by only accessing the target, plus a prescribed number of helper sub-blocks adjacent in the code chain. This paper develops a theoretical methodology for analyzing the semi-global decoding performance of spatially coupled LDPC codes constructed from protographs. The main result shows that semi-global decoding thresholds can be derived from certain thresholds we define for the single-sub-block graph. These characterizing thresholds are also used for deriving lower bounds on the decoder’s performance over channels with variability across sub-blocks, which are motivated by applications in data storage. We investigate the list decodability of symbol-pair codes in this paper. First, we show that the list decodability of every symbol-pair code does not exceed the Gilbert–Varshamov bound. On the other hand, we are able to prove that with high probability, a random symbol-pair code can be list decoded up to the Gilbert–Varshamov bound. Our second result of this paper is to derive the Johnson-type bound, i.e., a lower bound on list decoding radius in terms of minimum distance. This paper derives upper and lower bounds on the secrecy capacity-memory tradeoff of a wiretap erasure broadcast channel (BC) with ${\mathsf{K}}_{w} $ weak receivers and ${\mathsf {K}}_{s} $ strong receivers, where weak receivers and strong receivers have the same erasure probabilities and cache sizes, respectively. The lower bounds are achieved by the schemes that meticulously combine joint cache-channel coding with wiretap coding and key-aided one-time pads. The presented upper bound holds more generally for arbitrary degraded BCs and arbitrary cache sizes. When only weak receivers have cache memories, upper and lower bounds coincide for small and large cache memories, thus providing the exact secrecy capacity-memory tradeoff for this setup. The derived bounds further allow us to conclude that the secrecy capacity is positive even when the eavesdropper is stronger than all the legitimate receivers with cache memories. Moreover, they show that the secrecy capacity-memory tradeoff can be significantly smaller than its non-secure counterpart, but it grows much faster when cache memories are small. This paper also presents a lower bound on the global secrecy capacity-memory tradeoff where one is allowed to optimize the cache assignment subject to a total cache budget. It is close to the best known lower bound without secrecy constraint. For small total cache budget, the global secrecy capacity-memory tradeoff is achieved by assigning all the available cache memory uniformly over all the receivers if the eavesdropper is stronger than all the legitimate receivers, and it is achieved by assigning the cache memory uniformly only over the weak receivers if the eavesdropper is weaker than the strong receivers. This paper considers the problem of channel coding over Gaussian intersymbol interference (ISI) channels with a given decoding rule. Specifically, it is assumed that the mismatched decoder has an incorrect assumption on the channel impulse response. The mismatch capacity is the highest achievable rate for a given decoding rule. The existing achievable rates for channels and decoding metrics with memory (as in our model) are currently available only in the form of multi-letter expressions that cannot be calculated. Consequently, they provide little insight on the mismatch problem. In this paper, we derive the computable formulas of achievable rates and discuss some implications of our results. Our achievable rates are based on two ensembles: the ensemble of codewords generated by an autoregressive process and the ensemble of codewords drawn uniformly over a “type class” of real-valued sequences. We provide a few numerical results of our achievable rates, as functions of the mismatched ISI parameters. In the $q$ -ary online (or “causal”) channel coding model, a sender wishes to communicate a message to a receiver by transmitting a codeword $\mathbf {x} =(x_{1},\ldots,x_{n}) \in \{0,1,\ldots,q-1\}^{n}$ symbol-by-symbol via a channel limited to at most $pn$ errors and $p^{*} n$ erasures. The channel is “online” in the sense that at the $i$ th step of communication the channel decides whether to corrupt the $i$ th symbol or not based on its view so far, i.e., its decision depends only on the transmitted symbols $(x_{1},\ldots,x_{i})$. This is in contrast to the classical adversarial channel in which the corruption is chosen by a channel that has full knowledge of the sent codeword $\mathbf {x}$. In this paper, we study the capacity of $q$ -ary online channels for a combined corruption model, in which the channel may impose at most $pn$ errors and at most $p^{*} n$ erasures on the transmitted codeword. The online channel (in both the error and erasure case) has seen a number of recent studies, which present both upper and lower bounds on its capacity. Over the past decade, the bulk of wireless traffic has shifted from speech to content. This shift creates the opportunity to cache part of the content in memories closer to the end users, for example in base stations. Most previous paper focuses on the reduction of load in the backhaul and core networks due to caching, i.e., on the benefits caching offers for the wireline communication link between the origin servers and the caches. In this paper, we are instead interested in the benefits caching can offer for the wireless communication link between the caches and the end users. To quantify the gains of caching for this wireless link, we consider an interference channel in which each transmitter is equipped with an isolated cache memory. Communication takes place in two phases, a content placement phase followed by a content delivery phase. The objective is to design both the placement and the delivery phases to maximize the rate in the delivery phase in response to any possible user demands. Focusing on the three-user case, we show that through careful joint design of these phases, we can reap three distinct benefits from caching: a load balancing gain, an interference cancellation gain, and an interference alignment gain. In our proposed scheme, load balancing is achieved through a specific file splitting and placement, producing a particular pattern of content overlap at the caches. This overlap allows to implement interference cancellation. Furthermore, it allows us to create several virtual transmitters, each transmitting a part of the requested content, which increases interference-alignment possibilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
