This paper proposed a simulation method for the charge transport in single-layer oil-paper insulation. The method of transient upstream finite-element method (FEM) is derived in order to calculate the time variation of charge densities in medium. The numerical simulation of charge transport in the single-layer oil-paper insulation is realized by applying the transient upstream FEM to the transport equations of bipolar charges. With reasonable microparameter, the charge transport in an experimental object is simulated. The simulation results are consistent with the experimental data. A bent model of oil-paper insulation is analyzed to study the charge distribution under the actual condition. This paper focuses on analytical methods of a finite-element method (FEM)-based edge heating system. The edge heating system plays a role in maintaining the temperature in the hot rolling process of carbon steel. Carbon steel moves along the production line and maintains the temperature by the edge heating system in the process. Power-of-the-edge heating system is transmitted to carbon steel during the process. Eddy currents are generated in carbon steel by Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction, and eddy current loss serves as a heat source to increase the temperature. Thus, there is a need for accurate electromagnetic-field analysis and thermal analysis because the eddy current path generated in carbon steel greatly affects the heat distribution in carbon steel. This multiphysics analysis requires high reliability. Accordingly, this paper presents a coupling analysis method using an FEM-based coordinate mapping method as a more accurate analytical method. In this paper, a new finite element Gaussian belief propagation (FGaBP) method is presented for time-domain applications. The unconditionally stable Newmark time-stepping scheme is combined with FGaBP for this purpose. As shown empirically, the method converges for increasing time step sizes without losing stability. The combined FGaBP-time stepping is able to retain the parallel scalability from FGaBP as in previous work. This paper employs an overhang structure for axial flux permanent magnet motor to enhance the torque density. However, the overhang structure requires a computationally expensive 3-D finite-element method (FEM) for analysis, because a quasi-3-D FEM cannot be applied to such a geometry. Thus, in order to reduce the computational cost of above-mentioned topology, this paper adopts a field reconstruction method (FRM). The conventional FRM is applicable only in the case, where the slot pitch to teeth length ratio is the same along radial direction. To address this problem, we introduce a virtual air gap concept so that it can take into account parallel slot effect as well as overhang effect. The shape of rotor bar is important in squirrel cage induction motor (SCIM) performance, such as starting torque, operating torque, and operating efficiency. Some designs of increasing starting torque of motor may decrease motor efficiency. Moreover, some designed shapes of bar are so complicated to be manufactured. In this paper, the design is focused on the simple inclination of conventional shape of bar with keeping the rotor bar area constant. The effects of rotor bar inclination on starting torque, operating torque, and operating efficiency in SCIM are analyzed. The results showed that there is optimum inclination of rotor bar to improve all the performances together. An application to the 3.4 kW SCIM showed that the starting torque is increased from 17.53 to 17.64 \text N\cdot \text m , the operating torque from 11.19 to 11.26~\text N\cdot \text m , and the operating efficiency from 94.18% to 94.81%. Improvised asymptotic boundary conditions are a sparse but approximate method of solving open boundary problems. Since this method approximates unbounded space as series of isotropic shells, it can be readily implemented in virtually any finite element solver without the need for additional code. A previous paper addressed application of this technique to magnetic problems described with a vector potential formulation. The wirelessly transferred power as well as charging efficiency will significantly drop due to the large misalignment between the transmitting coil and receiving coil for roadway electric vehicles (EVs). A low-cost and reliable misalignment-tolerant wireless charging technique is indispensable for the rapid commercialization of wireless EV charging. This paper presents a technique to achieve the misalignment-tolerant wireless charging for the dynamic wireless charging (DWC) system by means of a tunneling magnetoresistive (TMR) sensor array as well as the easy-to-fabricate receiving coils. The TMR sensor array provides the coil-misalignment position by measuring the magnetic field component generated from the transmitting coil. The corresponding receiving coils are selected to be in resonance according to the measured coil-misalignment positions. In this paper, a sensor array composed of 29 uniaxial TMR sensors was utilized to measure the magnetic field component. This effectiveness of the proposed technique has been validated by both the finite-element method (FEM) simulations and laboratory experiments. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed misalignment-tolerant wireless charging system can operate in a relatively wide misalignment range of ±120 mm with charging efficiency higher than 76.2%. For the design of magnetostrictive MEMS devices, finite-element modeling (FEM), the determination of the magnetostrictive coefficient, and application examples were examined in this paper. The magnetostrictive coefficients are usually calculated by measuring the bending deflection of the cantilever on which magnetostrictive materials are deposited. In most of the research on the magnetostrictive deposited substrate for the derivation of structural formulas, it is commonly assumed that the flexural rigidities of magnetostrictive materials are negligible because magnetostrictive films are much thinner than substrate materials. In this paper, the effect of magnetostrictive thin film’s elastic energy on the magnetostrictive coefficient is investigated. A self-coded and developed finite-element program for magnetostrictive actuators is formulated, where magnetic properties are considered as nonlinear, and elastic properties are assumed as linear. As a result, it is potentially shown that magnetostrictive thin-film micropatterned actuators would be accommodated for targeted actuating behavior through an FEM capability for evaluation and selective micropatterning technique for fabrication. This paper proposes an all-in-one system for hyperloop that conducts propulsion, levitation, and guidance. Currently demand on high-speed long-distance transportation is increasing, so that hyperloop is getting attention and studied hard globally. Hyperloop is a new innovative transportation in which a levitated subsonic speed train travels through a vacuum cylindrical tube. Hyperloop needs functions of propulsion, levitation, and guidance for its service, and many devices are necessary for those functions. In the tube, a constrained space, many devices make the entire system complicated, and the size of the vehicle and tube are increased. Therefore, the costs of maintenance, manufacture, and construction are increased and control of each device becomes very difficult. But a non-symmetric double-sided linear induction motor (NSDLIM), the subject of this paper, is an all-in-one system that could conduct all functions. In this paper, the concept of NSDLIM was introduced and its possibility was suggested. Requirements of NSDLIM were investigated considering very high acceleration, velocity, and low air pressure. An NSDLIM model was designed and analyzed by using the finite-element method. Then, NSDLIM parameters that affect performance were investigated and adjusted to improve performance. Use of low static magnetic fields for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal detection remains a challenge due to low signal-to-noise ratio, low energy difference between energy levels, and less spin transitions due to limited availability of spins. Despite these challenges, different measurement techniques based on low static magnetic fields, stray magnetic fields, and non-uniform fields have been implemented. In this paper, an approach toward using low static fields generated by permanent magnets for portable magnetic resonance applications is described. Finite element simulation models of different magnet geometries are used to develop an estimate of the magnetic field distribution exterior to the magnet. A concentric ring magnet geometry is selected to obtain flexible control of localized regions of uniform magnetic field. An estimate of the NMR voltage for different magnet sizes and orientations is presented. Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) response predicting is important for defect estimation. This paper first proposes a concept of basic signal by discovering the combination property of the MFL response. The basic signal can be used to predict the MFL response conveniently by a basic signal combination method (BSCM), which is also innovatively put forward in this paper. In this method, the basic signal is calculated in advance, and the MFL response can be calculated by several transformation and combination operations. Both the simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of BSCM. A novel hybrid-flux permanent-magnet (PM) generator, which has both axial flux and radial flux, is proposed. An axial-flux PM generator is designed by a reluctance network method and the 3-D finite element method. Using these results, this paper proposes a radial-flux and hybrid-flux machine, whose main dimensions are chosen to the same values as a commercialized one. The proposed hybrid-flux machine has the largest output power per volume. The power density of the proposed generator is 9.4 times larger than that of the commercialized one. Coreless axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines are attracting increasing attention due to their compact structure and high torque density. The torque to weight ratio can be further enhanced by the use of alternate conductor materials, such as carbon nanotube (CNT), or aluminum windings in place of the copper material coils. This paper proposes a coreless AFPM synchronous motor with CNT windings. Analytical equations are developed to allow a systematic comparison of machine designs with different conductor materials. The performance of machine designs with different coil materials, namely, copper, aluminum, and CNT, is evaluated and compared. The calculations are also backed by 3-D finite-element analysis. This paper presents models developed through analytical or numerical computation and finite-element analysis to improve the resolution of a new kind of vibrating magnetometers. This peculiar magnetometer uses the piezoelectric transduction to actuate a quartz resonator at its resonance frequency taking advantage of the high $Q$ factor of a quartz resonator to achieve high resolution. The magnetic sensitive element is a thin ferromagnetic film of nickel–cobalt, which is sputtered on the moving beams of the resonator. This magnetic thin film applies a periodic torque on the resonator, shifting its resonance frequency. This torque depends on the magnetic field applied; therefore, the value of the magnetic field can be deduced from the frequency shift measurement. The aim of this paper is to develop and improve sensitivity models, which will be useful tools in the future work to establish the optimal geometry for a resonator and the best position of the magnetic thin film on it in order to improve the sensitivity and resolution of the global sensor. This paper presents performance improvements of a double excitation synchronous motor by using a reluctance network (RN). The distinguishing feature of the double excitation principle is to use permanent magnets with high energy, while air-gap flux is flexibly controlled by field windings. Therefore, the first contribution of this paper focuses on maximizing air-gap flux range control. Second, an approach for torque ripple reduction is proposed by directly modifying air-gap flux according to the instantaneous torque profile. The achieved resultant torque stays almost constant for a case study. The validity of the RN method is examined by comparisons with 3-D finite element and experimental results for several machines. This paper presents an approach to obtain high torque density in induction motor (IM) design by optimizing the search algorithms and processes. Optimal design of electrical machines has many sub-optimal peaks and requires significant computation time. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a new cost pattern value method (CPVM) for local search algorithms employed in optimal design. The CPVM concept is an intelligent strategy that digitizes the gradient over the searching region by sharing information between neighboring points. When the algorithm converges quickly to local optimum by a normalized weight method, it provides a mechanism to escape from that region. The validity of the proposed approach was evaluated using a benchmark function, and it was applied to optimal design of a 260 kW IM to maximize torque production based on a finite-element analysis. The aim of this paper is to introduce and to study the performance of some multiscale finite-element formulations for the eddy current problem in laminated iron in two dimensions. The case of the main magnetic flux that is parallel to the laminates and assumed to be perpendicular to the plane of projection is considered. Exact solutions of relevant boundary value problems for eddy currents are presented. Multiscale formulations based on the magnetic vector potential (MVP) and the single component current vector potential and on a mixed formulation of the MVP and the current density are discussed. An approach for a multiscale formulation with the MVP is constructed at the best based on an exact solution. The associated weak form of the multiscale finite-element method (MSFEM) is presented. Similar to the MVP, multiscale formulations for the single component current vector potential and for a mixed formulation with the MVP and the current density are studied. This paper does not present a mathematical analysis of the MSFEM for eddy currents in laminates. The performance of the MSFEM is studied by numerous numerical experiments of different examples. This paper covers the topics exact integration versus averaging of coefficients, stability of the MSFEM in a particular case, p-refinement of micro-shape functions and standard finite-element polynomials and edge effect. Simulations show the capability of MSFEM to approximate eddy currents in iron laminates efficiently and accurately. Space charge distribution is a valuable indicator of ion flow field and is widely utilized to assess electromagnetic environment for transmission line. The finite-element method (FEM) is widely used to solve this problem. However, Kaptzov assumption in FEM assumes that onset voltage is unchangeable after corona occurs, which does not tally with the actual situation. This paper adopted the finite-element iteration method (FEIM), which uses empirical formula instead of assumptions to calculate the charge density. The surface field intensity is not constant in the empirical formula because the empirical formula takes the effects of space charge on surface field into consideration. So this is more consistent with actual situation. In order to verify the accuracy of the algorithm, sound pulse method is applied to measure the charge density around the conductor in the laboratory. Simulation results show that the charge density obtained in this paper agrees with the data in the experiment, which verifies the validity of the empirical formula for calculation of space charge density. Compared with a method considering Kaptzov assumption, FEIM is closer to the experiment in area around conductor line and near the ground. In this paper, the characteristics analysis of the surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor is carried out using the method of reflecting the axial leakage magnetic flux into the 2-D finite-element analysis (2-D FEA), and the result is discussed. For the method of projecting the axial leakage flux on the 2-D plane, the permeance coefficient was introduced. By using the proposed method, the parameters such as d- and q-axes inductance and linkage flux for d- and q-axes equivalent circuit analysis were calculated, and the characteristics analysis was performed. In this paper, the air-gap flux density components in the eccentric surface-mounted phase modulation (SPM) machines are predicted analytically. In the provided model, the slotting effects of the armature are taken into account. In the modeling process, conformal transformations (CTs) are employed to obtain an equivalent concentric slotless machine for the eccentric slotted PM machine. To satisfy the condition of using CTs, i.e., having a Laplace equation, the PMs are replaced with an equivalent current sheet at the surface of the rotor. The approach of finding this current sheet is approved by the basis of the electromagnetic theory. One of the contributions of this paper is that the provided model is capable of modeling the eccentric SPM machines with any PM magnetization pattern by means of CTs. Substituting the predicted air-gap flux density components in the Maxwell stress tensor, the machine unbalanced magnetic force and its cogging torque are computed. This paper deals with equivalent 2-D finite-element (FE) models of permanent magnet lead screw (PMLS), to accurately predict the thrust force. Due to the helical-shape permanent magnets (PMs), the magnetic fields of PMLS are typically 3-D and non-symmetric. However, the PMLS is approximately symmetric in some cases and an equivalent 2-D axis-symmetric FE model is developed instead of 3-D models. The problem lies in that no evaluation about the accuracy and applicability of the 2-D axis-symmetric FE model was offered in previous literature. In this paper, the 2-D axis-symmetric FE model is derived based on the concept of equivalent current sheets of PMs. The limitations of the existing 2-D axis-symmetric FE model are clarified, and a novel equivalent 2-D torque FE model is then proposed to predict thrust force with the gear ratio when the 2-D axis-symmetric FE model is not appropriate. It is shown that the choice of equivalent 2-D FE model depends on the lead angle of PMLS, 2-D axis-symmetric FE model is applicable in the range of (0°, 15°), and 2-D torque FE model is preferred in the range of (65°, 90°). This paper puts forward the design and analysis of an ironless permanent magnet machine for a micro wind power application. The proposed methodology includes comprehensive geometric, magnetic, and electrical dimensioning followed by detailed 2-D finite-element modeling of a synchronous generator. The configuration investigated in this paper shows the generators rotor fixed in the tip of the blades and illustrates the advantages of a large diameter for a microgeneration application. For the purpose of saving energy resources, it is extremely expected to develop highly efficient electric motors. Different types of permanent magnet (PM) arrangement can significantly affect the performance of the motors. Conventionally, the arrangement of the PMs is determined by designer’s experience. This paper focuses on the optimal design of PM arrangement in PM synchronous motors (PMSMs). We present a general pattern of the PM arrangement in PMSM. By varying the parameters of the general pattern, it can produce different types of PM arrangement in the rotor. The employed approach combines the global optimization method with the finite-element method for solving the optimization of the PM structures. Based on the proposed general pattern and optimization methods, the best PM arrangement in the motor can be automatically determined. In order to reduce computing loading, this paper employs the response surface models for reducing the computing time of objective functions. The field calculus for electrical machines (EMs) is realized solving subdomain problems. Most often, the latter are solved using either finite element analysis (FEA) or the semi-analytical solution of a Laplace or Poisson equation obtained by separation of variables. The first option can capture complex geometries but becomes slow for high accuracy, whereas the second is fast but limited to simple periodic geometries and linear or infinite permeable materials. This paper presents the 2-D implementation of the spectral element method (SEM) for the modeling of EMs. The polynomial basis functions used to approximate the solution in each domain are reaching exponential convergence similar to the semi-analytical solution. Moreover, each element can be represented by a non-square shape resulting in the possibility to model complex geometries. Following the results in this paper, significantly fewer degrees of freedom are needed for the SEM to achieve the approximation similar to the FEA, and consequently less memory and computational time are required. In this paper, a changeable winding brushless DC (BLDC) motor for the expansion of the speed region is described. The changeable winding BLDC motor is driven by a large number of phase turns at low speeds and by a reduced number of turns at high speeds. For this reason, the section where the winding changes is very important. Ideally, the time at which the windings are to be converted should be same as the time at which the voltage changes. However, if this timing is not exactly synchronized, a large current is generated in the motor, and the demagnetization of the permanent magnet occurs. In addition, a large torque ripple is produced. Recently, dual-rotor motor (DRM) has emerged as an alternative for an induction motor (IM) or a permanent-magnet (PM) motor for electric vehicle application, due to its better drive performance and better torque density. This paper presents an analytical model for the hybrid IM-PM configuration of DRM. The analytical model can be used to predict induced bar currents, electromagnetic torque generated, and magnetic fields in various regions of the motor. The mentioned calculations are performed under steady-state conditions. The analytical method is developed using the subdomain model approach in 2-D polar coordinates. Appropriate governing equations along with boundary conditions across all the sub-domain regions of the DRM are employed to calculate the magnetic vector potential in all the regions. Three-phase nonoverlapping stator wound-field synchronous (NSWFS) machines employing salient pole rotors are proposed in this paper. Based on the optimized design, the influence of rotor pole number on the proposed machine is investigated. According to 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA), it is found that the proposed machine shows higher torque density and lower torque ripple compared with the existing NSWFS machines. The operation principles of the proposed machine under different pole numbers are presented and compared in this paper. In this paper, on the basis of a conventional 12-stator-coils/17-rotor-teeth (12/17) flux-switching permanent magnet (PM) (FSPM) machine and a 6/17 V-shaped FSPM machine, a novel 6/17 multi-tooth FSPM machine with a pair of magnets located in the upper apex of stator tooth is proposed. Then, four multi-tooth topologies sharing the same 6-stator-coils but with different rotor teeth combinations, namely, 6/17, 6/10, 6/11, and 6/13, are compared by the 2-D finite element analysis (2-D-FEA). The FEA-predicted results reveal the optimal combinations of stator coils and rotor teeth should be 6/17 for high-performance multi-tooth machines. Thereafter, an optimal design criterion of multi-tooth FSPM machines for the combinations of stator coils and rotor teeth is proposed. Afterward, electromagnetic performance evaluation between the 6/17 V-shaped and 6/17 multi-tooth machines is conducted, in terms of back electromotive force (back EMF), electromagnetic torque, cogging torque, phase inductance, unbalanced magnetic force (UMF), torque/magnet ratio, and efficiency. The comparative results indicate that the proposed 6/17 multi-tooth machine is superior to the V-shaped one, since it exhibits much higher torque/magnet ratio, larger torque, lower inductance, and much lower UMF, though the cogging torque and total harmonic distribution of phase back EMF are unfavorably larger. A separate-stator modular machine with biased flux is proposed in this paper. In this machine, the windings and the permanent magnets are located in two separate parts of the stator, which favors the heat dissipation and magnetic saturation reduction of the machine. With the specially designed stator structure, a biased flux can be introduced to flexibly regulate the excitation field by injecting a zero-sequence current into the phase windings, so that a wide operation speed range can be achieved. Moreover, a modular structure is adopted to simplify the automated manufacture assembly. In this paper, the machine configuration and the working principle are first illustrated. The effect of the design parameters on its torque capability is then investigated. This paper presents a quasi-3-D cylindrical coordinate high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cable model based on the shell element theory. The quasi-3-D meshing elements are used instead of the traditional 3-D meshing elements to overcome the difficulties in meshing. The improved extended finite-element method (XFEM) is proposed to solve the field problem in close-jointed thin layers. In this paper, two novel double-sided hybrid-excitation flux-reversal linear motors (DSHEFRLM) with the surface (S-) and interior (I-) permanent-magnet(PM) arrangements are proposed and comparatively investigated. The proposed motors feature an asymmetrical double-sided primary configuration which enables the armature and field excitations to be placed separately. Through 2-D finite-element method (FEM), two motor structures with different slot/pole combinations are optimized, and then, the magnetic fields and electromagnetic performances are calculated, including inductances, no-load flux linkage, thrust characteristics, and PM demagnetization capability. By comparison, it is found that S-DSHEFRLMs show larger thrust density while I-DSHEFRLMs exhibit superior flux-adjusting capability. Finally, these predicted results are validated by 3-D FEM. Rotary-linear switched reluctance motors (RLSRMs) have been introduced to realize simultaneous rotary and linear motions in one structure. This paper proposes the modeling of RLSRM in two manners: analytical and finite-element methods. In the first approach, a model is proposed based on position-wise functions which describe the governing equations of the motor. The derived equations are utilized in a block diagram to comprise the model. In the second approach, static FEA is utilized to improve the former model by obtaining the inductance profile of the motor. The models separate the rotary motion from the linear motion in order to calculate the torque and force. The analytical model is faster than the FEA-based model because of the independency to FEA. However, it is less accurate. The FEA-based model needs prior static FEA and considers the fringing and saturation effects more accurately. The FEA-based model is computationally more efficient than the 3-D transient FEA. The motor’s performance parameters obtained via the models versus the 3-D transient FEA as well as the experimental test results indicate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed models. A coaxial magnetic gear (CMG) consisting of an inner ring, outer ring, and flux modulator exhibits relatively large torque density at low operating cost and low noise level. To guide the selection of soft magnetic materials for the flux modulator, this paper first incorporates the Jiles–Atherton model within a finite-element (FE) framework. The influence of nonlinear magnetic properties on end-effect losses (magnetic flux leakage and fringing) is then investigated with the objective of maximizing the pullout torque. For flux modulators whose initial magnetic permeability and saturation flux density exceed certain threshold value, the pullout torque of a CMG becomes insensitive to magnetic properties and end-effect losses can be efficiently calculated from a 2-D FE model together with a constant torque reduction ratio. This paper presents a systematic torque surface method that can decouple the analysis of average torque and torque ripples. This paper investigates the partial irreversible demagnetization characteristics of magnets in flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines. Two different partial demagnetization mechanisms in the FSPM machines are modeled and demonstrated. The 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA) results for a baseline 10 kW 15 kr/min ferrite FSPM machine verify the validity of the proposed partial demagnetization model. Performance degradation due to demagnetization is evaluated for the baseline machine based on the FEA results. This paper also proposes a novel design to enhance the demagnetization withstand capability. This research reveals the most vulnerable region of the magnet to irreversible demagnetization in the FSPM machines. This paper applied the finite-element method (FEM) with topological data structures to the optimization of electrical devices. A generic modifiable graph data structure is built according to the graph-theoretic foundation for these data structures. The employed topological FEM avoids rebuilding of the mesh in traditional FEM method while geometrical variations happen. It is an effective algorithm which can save computer storage and working time when applied to successive optimization. For testing a conductive pipeline, remote field eddy current testing (RFECT) is used, which is composed of solenoidal exciter coil and receiving sensor coils. In RFECT, there is remote field zone where the eddy current distributions are concentrated on the external surface of the pipe wall. Therefore, it is possible to detect a defect that occurs on the external surface of the pipe wall even if the receiving coils are located inside the pipe. From the measured coil signals, it is necessary to decompose background offset and predict the pattern of defect signal in order to estimate the defect size for the maintenance of underground pipelines eventually. In the process, the amplitude variations of the induced magnetic field at sensor coils are closely related to defect depth. Therefore, it is important to analyze and eliminate distortions of measured RFECT signals. This paper analyzes the effects of the induced magnetic field on the sensing signals with respect to different depth sizes in the RFECT system. The amplitude and the distribution pattern of defect signals are computed by a 3-D finite-element method and the method to eliminate the signal distortions caused by induced magnetic fields are presented. For the application in the magnetic core of an electrical machine, electrical steel is cut, packaged, and fixed. The processes induce plastic deformation as well as residual stress. As a result, the magnetic material properties are deteriorated. Most of the effects act local, e.g., in the vicinity of the cut edge or welding line. In order to model the change in local magnetic properties, the effect mechanisms of plastic and elastic stress have to be understood and quantified. In this paper, rectangular samples of a conventional non-oriented 2.4 wt% FeSi with 0.35 mm thickness are stressed uniaxially beyond the elastic limit and characterized during loading, after deformation, and during reloading. A homogeneous stress distribution across the cross section is targeted by the experimental setup to enable a correlation between the global magnetic properties and mechanical finite-element simulations of the stress. As a result, separate physical effects, e.g., dislocation formation, global stress distribution, and residual stress after dislocation formation, on magnetic property change are analyzed. A novel interior permanent magnet linear vernier machine (IPM-LVM) is proposed and analyzed in this paper. Compared to the existing surface-mounted permanent magnet linear vernier machine (SPM-LVM) and the SPM-LVM with Halbach arrays, the proposed machine can offer higher flux density in both the air-gap and armature iron core, which lead to a higher back electric motive force (back EMF) and higher thrust density under the same mover volume and heat capacity. Besides, it is proven that the proposed IPM-LVM also has a lower demagnetization risk compared to the SPM-LVM. Furthermore, in order to reduce the thrust ripple of the proposed machine, the three-sectional structure is adopted in this paper, which makes the proposed IPM-LVM exhibit high thrust density and low thrust ripple at the same time. This paper presents a methodology that allows taking advantage of the geometrical periodicity of electrical machines together with the modeling of rotor motion. It enables by means of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to reduce the large-scale system obtained from the finite-element model to several smaller independent subsystems, allowing a shortening of the computational time. Due to DFT properties, the computational time can be more reduced especially when we consider the inter-dependence of the spectral components under either balanced or unbalanced supply condition. In addition, a further reduction is possible in the case of balanced regimes where the distribution of the eventual numerical solution is governed by a limited number of prevailing harmonics. This paper presents a novel flux-modulated type dual-axis motor that has two mechanical inputs/outputs, since it consists of a stator, a permanent magnet rotor, and a modulating rotor. Furthermore, since the dual-axis motor has a function the same as a planetary type magnetic gear, it can transmit torque with arbitrary gear ratio and divide mechanical input/output into two rotors without any mechanical contact. In this paper, first, conventional and proposed flux-modulated type dual-axis motors are optimized and compared using finite-element analysis. Incipient stator winding fault in permanent magnet synchronous wind generators (PMSWGs) is very difficult to be detected as the fault generated variations in terminal electrical parameters are very weak and chaotic. This paper simulates the incipient stator winding faults at different degree of insulation degradation of one turn in the winding of a PMSWG. Cosimulation method by combining finite element model and external circuits is used. Hilbert–Huang transformation is applied to detect the very early stage fault in interturn insulation by analyzing the stator current. This paper deals with an analytical model of the virtual air gap (VAG) function in order to define design rules when this technique is used inside complex devices. The establishment of those design rules constitutes the main originality of the developments presented in this paper, which are about a single-phase magnetic core. It is based on the definition of a nonlinear reluctance network that takes simultaneously into account the effects of dc and ac magnetic flux components in the disturbed area that contains the VAG. A method of getting the more accurate equivalent core length through 3-D electromagnetic finite element method (FEM) (3-D FEM) is presented in this paper. It is a matter of course that 2-D FEM is mostly used to evaluate the rotating machine performance instead of 3-D FEM. It takes 106 times longer to complete 3-D FEM than to complete 2-D FEM according to the simulation data in this paper. The motor has the radial air-cooling ducts in the stator. The use of radial air-cooling ducts has an effect on the electrical performance of its machine due to the fringing effect between ducts. The way to consider that effect is that the actual core length has to be replaced with the equivalent core length to reflect the magnetic circuit of 2-D perspective. However, there is 12% error of the root mean square no-load voltage between 2-D and 3-D FEM in 16 MVA salient pole synchronous motor. The cause of the error is the miscalculated equivalent core length in 2-D FEM. The purpose of this paper is to study the cause of the error through 3-D FEM to get the more accurate equivalent core length in 2-D FEM. This paper proposes a novel hybrid excitation vernier permanent magnet machine (HE-VPM). The characteristics of the proposed machine are: 1) the PMs are embedded in the stator teeth, which is helpful for the heat dissipation; 2) the rotor is salient structure without PMs and windings, which ensures the reliability of high-speed operation; 3) the nonoverlapping concentrated winding shortens the end-connection, and improves the torque density, 4) only half of the stator teeth possess PMs, and the total amount of PMs are decreased; and 5) the dc current are injected to the armature coils, therefore, the exciting field can be adjusted flexibly. In this paper, the electromagnetic performance, including back electromotive force, torque, etc. are analyzed with finite element analysis. The results show that the proposed machine exhibits flexible field adjustment capability, which may be suitable for applications requiring wide speed range operation. Besides, it is found that, compared with the existing pure sinusoidal phase current, higher torque density can be obtained with dc-biased phase current under constant stator copper loss. After designing and optimizing an electric machine, efficiency maps are needed to predict a vehicle’s performance in a dynamic simulation. Calculating efficiencies at various torque and speed points, however, requires prior knowledge of the input excitation conditions, such as the current magnitude and advance angle, in an electromagnetic finite-element analysis simulation. Hence, this paper derives and uses nonlinear motor control equations (MTPA, FW, MTPV) in the study of efficiency map calculation while accounting for both saturation and cross-coupling effects. Coreless axial flux machines are of interest because of the absence of stator core losses and cogging torque. These machines generally employ concentrated windings. One of the challenges with such a winding is that the torque producing MMF component that corresponds to the fundamental of the magnet excitation is accompanied by substantial asynchronous components. These harmonics cause losses in the rotor core and magnets, which can become significant at high speeds. This paper proposes a new multilayer winding arrangement to eliminate the non-torque producing MMF components. This winding is applied to a 12-coil 16-pole coreless axial flux machine. This paper presents work completed in order to investigate the importance of magnetic shunts in transverse flux machines. Two types of transverse flux machines with different configurations were designed and tested in the laboratory. The first type of machine is a transverse flux generator with inner rotor. This machine was designed according to one of the patents. The second type of the machine is a transfer flux generator with double coil. Both types of the generators were designed in such a way so that it was possible to implement magnetic shunts inside the machines. Finite-element method analysis and experimental results showed that transverse flux machines without magnetic shunts had a number of disadvantages compared to those with magnetic shunts. These disadvantages are: higher flux leakage in the stator cores, partial cancelation of flux linkage in the coils, higher cogging torque, and increased torque ripple. This paper showed that magnetic shunts played a significant role in the performance of transverse flux machines. As study showed, magnetic shunts complicate a manufacturing process and increase the weight of the machine. This paper presents a method for determination of heat transfer coefficients for finite-element method housing model of medium-voltage switchgear cell. Suggested method is based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm. For that purpose, a real test model of partition wall has been created as well as an equivalent numerical FE model. Since the preciseness of thermal model is dependent on the preciseness of thermal coefficients, the goal of the optimization procedure is to assure even better match between the measured and the FE model calculated temperature values. Cogging torque is a source of vibration and noise in PM machines. Its reduction is always sought by electrical machine designers. While its study, in radial-flux PM machines, can often be done using 2-D finite element analysis (FEA), 3-D FEA is always required when it comes to its study in axial-flux PM machines (AFPM). AFPM machines have an inherent 3-D electromagnetic structure. There is a rich literature concerning the study of cogging torque in AFPM machines. Indeed, most of the authors use 3-D FEA for its study. However, 3-D FEA is time consuming and always requires expertise to be done correctly. The goal of this paper is to show that alternative techniques, to study cogging torque in AFPM machines, do exist.
