This Transactions’ Mini-Special Issue includes a selection of papers presented last year at the 2018 IEEE Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFIC) Symposium held in the Pennsylvania Convention Center and Loews Philadelphia Hotel, Philadelphia, PA, USA, during June 10–12, 2018. The 2018 RFIC Symposium focused on the major themes of millimeter-wave 5G and autonomous vehicles in the plenary sessions. The first plenary talk was delivered by Zachary J. Lemnios, the Vice President of IBM Research, and discussed silicon-based mm-wave systems for 5G and beyond. The second plenary talk was presented by Lars Reger, CTO of NXP Semiconductors’ Automotive Business Unit, and focused on RF systems in the automotive industry, including the technical aspects related to future self-driving cars. A novel ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter that is capable of integrating multiple notch bands is proposed in this paper. A multilayer nonuniform periodical structure, which can generate multiple transmission zeros, is deployed in the filter design to improve the selectivity and upper stopband performance of the filter. Short-circuited stub resonators are then integrated to obtain multiple notch bands. The compact footprint of the filter is achieved. UWB filters of this type without a notch and with single-, double-, and triple-notch bands are designed to meet the Federal Communications Commission-defined UWB indoor limit. The designed filters are verified by experiments and fabricated by using multilayer liquid-crystal polymer lamination technology. Both full-wave simulated and measured results are presented and good agreement between them is observed. This paper presents the design of a fully integrated ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse generator for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) 3.1-10.6-GHz band. This generator is reserved for medium rate applications and achieves pulses for an on-off keying (OOK) modulation, pulse position modulation, or pulse interval modulation. This UWB transmitter is based on the impulse response filter method, which uses an edge combiner in order to excite an integrated bandpass filter. The circuit has been integrated in an ST-Microelectronics CMOS 0.13-μm technology with 1.2-V supply voltage and the die size is 0.54 mm2. The pulse generator power consumption is 9 pJ per pulse and achieves a peak to peak magnitude of 1.42 V. The pulse is FCC compliant and the generator can be used with a rate up to 38 Mbs-1 with an OOK modulation. Based on the FCC power spectral density limitation, a sizing method is also presented. A high-power L-band combline diplexer to be used in a National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Jet Propulsion Laboratory space mission has been designed and tested for multipaction. The radar path was required to have peak power handling of 450 W with 24.25-W average. The radar filter was partially filled with low-loss dielectric material to protect it against multipaction. The device was tested with input power up to 1800–W peak with no evidence of multipaction while having excellent RF peformance, including less than 0.20-dB insertion loss over temperature. Abstract-Two 3-5-GHz low-power ultra-wideband (UWB) low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) with out-band rejection function using 0.18- m CMOS technology are presented. Due to the Federal Communications Commission's stringent power-emission limitation at the transmitter, the received signal power in the UWB system is smaller than those of the close narrow band interferers such as the IEEE 802.11 a/b/g wireless local area network, and the 1.8-GHz digital cellular service/global system for mobile communications. Therefore, we proposed a wideband input network with out-band rejection capability to suppress the out-band properties for our first UWB LNA. Moreover, a feedback structure and dual-band notch filter with low-power active inductors will further attenuate the out-band interferers without deteriorating the input matching bandwidth in the second UWB LNA. The 55/48/45 dB maximum rejections at 1.8/2.4/5.2 GHz, a power gain of 15 dB, and 3.5-dB minimum noise figure can be measured while consuming a dc power of only 5 mW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology is being reinvented. What began as an elementary technique for communicating using spark-gap transmitters at the beginning of the 20th Century is now being applied to a new set of 21st Century applications. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has now taken the global lead in approving for unlicensed communications and radar use low power-spectral-density UWB transmissions that are kept below modified Part 15 limits. The multiband OFDM technology is not based on traditional short-pulse techniques, but utilizes the >500-MHz instantaneous bandwidth definition of UWB in the FCC Report and Order.

Abstract-Novel ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filters are proposed based on quasi-lumped-element prototypes and implemented with multilayer liquid-crystal-polymer (LCP) technology. In this study, the broadside-coupled microstrip radial stubs and high-impedance microstrip lines are adopted as quasi-lumped elements for realizing compact UWB bandpass filters. By introducing a short-circuited high-impedance microstrip line as a shunt inductor and suitably designing quasi-lumped-element capacitors, a compact six-pole bandpass filter is implemented with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) defined UWB specifications. To further improve the selectivity and wideband performance, an eight-pole filter of this type is developed by adding two shunt short-circuited microstrip stubs, which introduce a transmission zero at the upper passband edge. The proposed filters are fabricated using multilayer LCP technology. Good agreement between simulated and measured results of these filters are observed. The measured results show that the fabricated six-pole filter has good specifications for the FCC-defined UWB system. The fabricated eight-pole filter has an ultra-wide fractional bandwidth (139%) and a good stopband rejection level, which is higher than 38.1 dB from 10.57 to 18.0 GHz. The proposed filters are attractive for UWB communications and radar systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
