Accurate and efficient methods for large-scale urban reconstruction are of significant importance to the computer vision and computer graphics communities. Although rapid acquisition techniques such as airborne LiDAR have been around for many years, creating a useful and functional virtual environment from such data remains difficult and labor intensive. This is due largely to the necessity in present solutions for data dependent user defined parameters. In this paper we present a new solution for automatically converting large LiDAR data pointcloud into simplified polygonal 3D models. The data is first divided into smaller components which are processed independently and concurrently to extract various metrics about the points. Next, the extracted information is converted into tensors. A robust agglomerate clustering algorithm is proposed to segment the tensors into clusters representing geospatial objects e.g., roads, buildings, etc. Unlike previous methods, the proposed tensor clustering process has no data dependencies and does not require any user-defined parameter. The required parameters are adaptively computed assuming a Weibull distribution for similarity distances. Lastly, to extract boundaries from the clusters a new multi-stage boundary refinement process is developed by reformulating this extraction as a global optimization problem. We have extensively tested our methods on several pointcloud datasets of different resolutions which exhibit significant variability in geospatial characteristics e.g., ground surface inclination, building density, etc and the results are reported. Enormous uncertainties in unconstrained environments lead to a fundamental dilemma that many tracking algorithms have to face in practice: Tracking has to be computationally efficient, but verifying whether or not the tracker is following the true target tends to be demanding, especially when the background is cluttered and/or when occlusion occurs. Due to the lack of a good solution to this problem, many existing methods tend to be either effective but computationally intensive by using sophisticated image observation models or efficient but vulnerable to false alarms. This greatly challenges long-duration robust tracking. This paper presents a novel solution to this dilemma by considering the context of the tracking scene. Specifically, we integrate into the tracking process a set of auxiliary objects that are automatically discovered in the video on the fly by data mining. Auxiliary objects have three properties, at least in a short time interval: 1) persistent co-occurrence with the target, 2) consistent motion correlation to the target, and 3) easy to track. Regarding these auxiliary objects as the context of the target, the collaborative tracking of these auxiliary objects leads to efficient computation as well as strong verification. By modifying a simple matching dissimilarity measure for categorical Objects, a heuristic approach was developed in [4], [12] which allows the use of the k-modes paradigm to obtain a cluster with strong intrasimilarity and to efficiently cluster large categorical data sets. This paper proposes a k-means type clustering algorithm that can automatically calculate variable weights. A new step is introduced to the k-means clustering process to iteratively update variable weights based on the current partition of data and a formula for weight calculation is proposed. The convergency theorem of the new clustering process is given. The variable weights produced by the algorithm measure the importance of variables in clustering and can be used in variable selection in data mining applications where large and complex real data are often involved. The paper describes a probabilistic active learning strategy for support vector machine (SVM) design in large data applications. The learning strategy is motivated by the statistical query model. While most existing methods of active SVM learning query for points based on their proximity to the current separating hyperplane, the proposed method queries for a set of points according to a distribution as determined by the current separating hyperplane and a newly defined concept of an adaptive confidence factor. This enables the algorithm to have more robust and efficient learning capabilities. The confidence factor is estimated from local information using the k nearest neighbor principle. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated on real-life data sets both in terms of generalization performance, query complexity, and training time. In this paper, we present novel techniques that improve the computational and memory efficiency of algorithms for solving multilabel energy functions arising from discrete mrfs or crfs. These methods are motivated by the observations that the performance of minimization algorithms depends on: 1) the initialization used for the primal and dual variables and 2) the number of primal variables involved in the energy function. Our first method (dynamic \alpha-expansion) works by “recycling” results from previous problem instances. The second method simplifies the energy function by “reducing” the number of unknown variables present in the problem. Further, we show that it can also be used to generate a good initialization for the dynamic \alpha-expansion algorithm by “reusing” dual variables. We test the performance of our methods on energy functions encountered in the problems of stereo matching and color and object-based segmentation. Experimental results show that our methods achieve a substantial improvement in the performance of \alpha-expansion, as well as other popular algorithms such as sequential tree-reweighted message passing and max-product belief propagation. We also demonstrate the applicability of our schemes for certain higher order energy functions, such as the one described in [1], for interactive texture-based image and video segmentation. In most cases, we achieve a 10-15 times speed-up in the computation time. Our modified \alpha-expansion algorithm provides similar performance to Fast-PD [2], but is conceptually much simpler. Cluster ensembles have recently emerged as a powerful alternative to standard cluster analysis, aggregating several input data clusterings to generate a single output clustering, with improved robustness and stability. From the early work, these techniques held great promise; however, most of them generate the final solution based on incomplete information of a cluster ensemble. The underlying ensemble-information matrix reflects only cluster-data point relations, while those among clusters are generally overlooked. This paper presents a new link-based approach to improve the conventional matrix. It achieves this using the similarity between clusters that are estimated from a link network model of the ensemble. In particular, three new link-based algorithms are proposed for the underlying similarity assessment. The final clustering result is generated from the refined matrix using two different consensus functions of feature-based and graph-based partitioning. This approach is the first to address and explicitly employ the relationship between input partitions, which has not been emphasized by recent studies of matrix refinement. The effectiveness of the link-based approach is empirically demonstrated over 10 data sets (synthetic and real) and three benchmark evaluation measures. The results suggest the new approach is able to efficiently extract information embedded in the input clusterings, and regularly illustrate higher clustering quality in comparison to several state-of-the-art techniques. This paper proposes a new 3D face recognition approach, Collective Shape Difference Classifier (CSDC), to meet practical application requirements, i.e., high recognition performance, high computational efficiency, and easy implementation. We first present a fast posture alignment method which is self-dependent and avoids the registration between an input face against every face in the gallery. Then, a Signed Shape Difference Map (SSDM) is computed between two aligned 3D faces as a mediate representation for the shape comparison. Based on the SSDMs, three kinds of features are used to encode both the local similarity and the change characteristics between facial shapes. The most discriminative local features are selected optimally by boosting and trained as weak classifiers for assembling three collective strong classifiers, namely, CSDCs with respect to the three kinds of features. Different schemes are designed for verification and identification to pursue high performance in both recognition and computation. The experiments, carried out on FRGC v2 with the standard protocol, yield three verification rates all better than 97.9 percent with the FAR of 0.1 percent and rank-1 recognition rates above 98 percent. Each recognition against a gallery with 1,000 faces only takes about 3.6 seconds. These experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm is not only effective but also time efficient.
