High-frequency (HF) oil-immersed transformers with small size and light weight have been paid wide attention by researchers. Its oil–paper insulation frequently withstands HF over-voltages at frequencies of several kilohertz and above, resulting in the too early failure of oil–paper insulation. In order to investigate the effect of HF on oil–paper insulation, this article investigates the partial discharge (PD) characteristics of oil–paper insulation under HF stress. The experimental results show that a frequency-induced inflection point is existed near 10 kHz and the PD parameters of HF voltages is much higher than that ac voltages. Besides, the theoretical mechanism is expounded to interpret and understand the formation process of frequency-induced inflection points more easily. It can be found that the change in frequency causes the change in the charge decay time constant and the residual charge on the insulating surface, resulting in the formation of the frequency-induced inflection point at HF. These results might contribute to determine the characteristics of PDs between HF voltages and ac voltages. It can provide references for the research and production of HF transformers. The space charge effect of transformer insulating paper will distort its internal electric field, and its space charge effect will be more prominent under extremely complex working conditions. At present, the micromechanism of charge transport and electric field distortion characteristics of paperboard are not clear under complex working conditions. So in this article, based on the bipolar carrier transport (BCT) model and the dynamic carrier balance model, the effects of high temperature, aging degree, moisture content, and bent degree on charges accumulation in paperboard are studied under dc high voltage by numerical simulation and the measured data needed for simulation. The results show that the higher temperature strengthens the carrier migration, deepens the injection depth of the charge, and aggravates the distortion of electric field intensity in paperboard. The more extended the aging time of paperboard, the greater the internal trap density and the deeper the trap depth, which lead to charges migration difficultly. Increasing water content in the paperboard will accelerate space charges to reach a steady state, while further increasing it will slow down this process, which is related to the shallow trap getting deeper. When the critical part of paperboard is extruded, many traps are introduced, resulting in charges accumulation seriously. This article presents a comparison between the results obtained at the application of a conservation treatment in cold high-frequency (HF) and afterglow plasma on historical papers dating in the 19th century. This article is focused on plasma biocide effects and on the impact of active species from the two types of plasma on the surface, highlighted by mechanical and physical–chemical analyses. The working gas was nitrogen and the treatment time was varied from 5 to 10 and 15 min. The result of physical–chemical analyses as SEM, pH determination, color, and tensile strength analyses, as well as microbiological investigations, converges to the conclusion that a treatment of 10 min achieves a complete decontamination, and the impact of active species is less intense in the afterglow plasma as compared to the direct discharge in cold HF plasma. This paper reports on the behavior of red and black ink from a historical printed book, subjected to a plasma discharge treatment, applied for the decontamination and cleaning of naturally aged paper. As some preliminary experiments using high-frequency (HF) plasma showed a slight fading of red ink, the study was focused on the comparison of HF cold plasma and afterglow plasma treatments in order to get conclusive information on the effect of plasma active species on the red ink. Energy Dispersive X-ray Scanning Electron Microscopy SEM-EDX and Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy FTIR-ATR analyses were used for the identification of inks and binder, while the impact of plasma on inks was assessed by SEM analysis and color determinations. The experiments have been performed on an especially designed modular equipment, allowing the samples to be subjected alternately to HF cold plasma or afterglow plasma treatment. The study proved that direct HF plasma could result in a more important deterioration at treatment duration exceeding 5 min, while in afterglow plasma, this discoloration is not observable. The color fading is imputable to the corrosion of pigment crystallites produced by direct plasma discharge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies have found that the surface flashover strength of oil-impregnated insulation paper can be improved by the modification of nanoparticles. To reveal the working mechanism, this paper presents an experimental study on the effects of TiO2 nanoparticles on streamer propagation process at the surface of oil-based nanofluid-impregnated insulation paper under lightning impulse voltage. The results show that the surface flashover voltage of nanofluid-impregnated insulation paper is significantly increased by 34.6%. Streamer characteristics including shape and length at the surface of oil-impregnated insulation paper were investigated using the schlieren technique. It is indicated that streamer characteristics are dramatically changed by the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles. For nanofluid-impregnated insulation paper, streamers with more but much shorter branches tend to develop into adjacent nanofluid rather than clinging to the paper compared to that for pure oil-impregnated paper. The reason responsible for the shape dissimilarity lies in the change of electrical force due to the permittivity difference between oil and paper. Furthermore, more shallow traps introduced by nanoparticles contribute to the faster surface charge dissipation of nanofluid-impregnated paper, reducing the charge accumulation at the streamer head and suppressing the electric field distortion. Thus, it is hard for streamers to develop at the surface of nanofluid-impregnated paper, resulting in an increase of surface flashover strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a radio frequency plasma equipment designed to be used for the conservation procedures, such as decontamination, cleaning, and consolidation of cellulose-based materials. Decontamination and cleaning are carried out by the low-temperature nitrogen plasma generated between two electrodes, connected to a 1.5-MHz generator. The paper consolidation is performed by coating with compatible polymers in view of long term protection. Surface analyses (color analysis and electron microscopy) were undertaken to assess the uniform display of the polymer on the paper surface. The microbiological tests made on representative samples collected from historical books attested the complete inhibition of bacteria and fungi after, at most, 7-min treatment duration, depending on the initial infestation degree. Deposition of transparent oxide films at atmosphere pressure onto polymeric substrates at room temperature is a technique gaining rapid acceptance. These films can be used for numerous applications such as antiscratch and water permeation barrier coatings. In this paper, a \sim 1.4 - \mu \text{m} SiOx layer has been deposited on polypropylene-coated paper at atmosphere pressure with a filamentary dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). The DBD linear discharge was driven by a 30-kHz power supply. Scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the deposited film. A low-cost and simple-arranged paper-based microplasma array device made by tape and Xerox paper was presented. Uniform array of discharge can be sustained in Ar, He, and ambient air atmosphere. Stable discharge can be sustained for at least 55 min when plasma is ignited in Ar ambient, based on the examination of time-resolved optical emission spectra. Throughout the conditions investigated, the power consumed by the device was well below 0.3 W. We also demonstrated that stable and uniform discharge can be generated when the device was bent to a radius of curvature of 2.5 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This is the sixth SOFE Special Issue that IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON PLASMA SCIENCE (TPS) has published, a tradition that started with the 2009 SOFE in order to afford attendees the opportunity to publish an expanded version of their oral or poster presentations in a refereed journal. It has become a popular option. With each successive SOFE, more authors take advantage of the possibility offered by TPS to have their conference papers gain wider exposure and be cited by others working in fusion engineering and its related disciplines. The Korea superconducting tokamak advanced research (KSTAR), which is under construction at the National Fusion R&D Center, Korea Basic Science Institute, Daejeon, Korea, has the mission to develop a steady-state capable advanced superconducting tokamak to establish the scientific and technological bases for a fusion reactor. After an intensive R&D program, substantial progress of the KSTAR tokamak engineering had been made on major tokamak structures, superconducting magnets, in-vessel components, diagnostic system, heating system, and power supplies with industrial manufacturers by May 2002. The engineering design has been elaborated to the extent necessary to allow a realistic assessment of its feasibility, performance, and cost. Since May 2003, the project has been in the phase of procurement. The fabrication of main tokamak structure such as vacuum vessel, cryostat, and supporting structures is well progressed. The manufacturing work of superconducting coils is also proceeding favorably. The tokaniak assembly started in July 2003 after site preparation and assembly jig. The start of commissioning is scheduled for June 2006. This paper describes the key features and engineering progress of the KSTAR tokamak and elaborates the work currently underway. Remarkable progress in the past decade in tokamak magnetic confinement devices has made it possible to plan and design an experimental reactor, called the international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER), by the international collaboration. Data on plasma behavior obtained by the world-wide tokamak devices have been accumulated and analyzed in a coordinated manner which constitute a sound basis for the prediction of ITER core plasma performance. Large scale technology R&D including development, manufacturing, and testing of scalable models of major tokamak components has been also pursued that ensured technical feasibility of ITER design. Thus, ITER is now technically ready to start construction, and the governmental negotiation on its construction, operation, and exploitation activities, etc., has been underway since November 2001. After reaching agreement on important issues for ITER, the international ITER organization is expected to start in 2004, and the main purpose of its exploitation; control of significantly burning plasma will be achieved within a few decades. Aiming at the ultimate goal of steady-state operation at high plasma pressure for ITER and beyond, researches for advanced modes of plasma in tokamaks are continued by the existing experimental devices. Alternative approaches by nontokamak experimental devices in universities and national institutes have also been made in parallel. To reorganize these activities centered at ITER as a core program, the reform for more a efficient system of the entire Japanese fusion program were discussed in the special working group under the government (MEXT). The IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) is held annually, sponsored by the Plasma Science and Applications Committee (PSAC) of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science Society (NPSS). The 47th IEEE NPSS ICOPS was organized ONLINE from December 06 to 10, 2020, by the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The ICOPS2020 was co-organized together with the 2nd Asia-Pacific Conference on Plasma and Terahertz Science (APCOPTS) which is envisioned as the future Asian version of the ICOPS series of conferences. The ICOPS2020 was initially planned as an onsite physical conference from May 24 to 28, 2020, at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was shifted to online virtual conference. The conference’s technical program included a wide range of plasma science and technology topics, which ranged from basic and fundamental research to traditional and emerging technology applications. Since the ICOPS2020 was co-organized with APCOPTS, it also had a very strong coverage of fields related to terahertz science and applications. A total of 627 presentations from scientists and participants from over 41 countries were made at ICOPS2020 with a record total registration of 754. All presentations were recorded and were available to the registered participants for 90 days after the conference was over. The program also included a women-in-engineering talk by Jackie Y. The objectives of this tutorial are as follows: 1) to help students and researchers develop a basic understanding of how pulsed-power systems are used to create high-energy-density (HED) matter; 2) to develop a basic understanding of a new, compact, and efficient pulsed-power technology called linear transformer drivers (LTDs); 3) to understand why LTDs are an attractive technology for driving HED physics (HEDP) experiments; 4) to contrast LTDs with the more traditional Marxgenerator/ pulse-forming-line approach to driving HEDP experiments; and 5) to briefly review the history of LTD technology as well as some of the LTD-driven HEDP research presently underway at universities and research laboratories across the globe. The air plasma effluent of an arc-seed microwave torch is used to kill bacterial spores contained inside an envelope. The torch is operated at a 60-Hz periodic mode (with about 40% duty cycle) and runs stably at a low airflow rate (e.g., 0.3931/s). The images of plasma torch plumes show that the arc loop of the discharge prolongs from the electrodes by nearly 3 cm and microwave energizes the charge particles along the arc loop considerably. The emission spectroscopy of the torch indicates that the plasma effluent contains an abundance of reactive atomic oxygen. Bacillus cereus is chosen for the biological agent in the decontamination experiment. The experiment and the decontamination efficacy of this torch are presented. The averaged temperature inside the envelope is measured to be less than 40 °C, thus ruling out the thermal decontamination mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The converter transformer is the most important piece of equipment in ultrahigh voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission systems. The rectifying valve side of the converter transformer is dealing with composite voltages, containing both ac and dc components. Therefore, the characteristics of the partial discharge (PD) in oil–paper insulation of such rectifying valves are different from those of rectifying valves subjected to pure ac or dc voltage. In this study, theories of hydrodynamic drift-diffusion and bipolar charge transfer were used to build the needle-plate electrode model with a paperboard depression, and experiments were used to verify the feasibility of the simulation method. The electric field and net charge distribution that can reflect the PD were analyzed. Besides, the effects of instantaneous voltage, the proportion of ac–dc components, and depression parameters on the development characteristics of PD were also discussed. Simulation results show that applied voltage, interface charge density, and model parameters can all affect the electric field strength, which in turn influences the development of PD in the depression. This research reveals the process and influencing factors of PD during the electrical aging process, which not only helps to optimize the oil–paper insulation at the rectifying valve side of the converter transformer but also provides a basis for further explaining the PD mechanism. The Latin American Workshop on Plasma Physics (LAWPP) is a regional meeting with global undertones, whose main purpose is to provide a forum for research carried out in Latin America, while presenting the main trends at international level on the various areas of plasma physics. Therefore, it fosters the establishment of scientific collaborations between Latin American researchers, as well as between them and researchers in developed countries, providing a proper forum to assess their results. The 16th version is to be carried out in Mexico City on 4-8 September, 2017. A special issue on selected papers of the 16th Latin American Workshop on Plasma Physics (LAWPP 2017) will be published within the next four months in the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science. While it will be based on the Plenary and Invited talks, the guest editors, aided by a technical committee, covering a wide scope of specialties, will invite some of the best papers to be submitted to this issue, and send them to suitable referees. The 16th version of the Latin American Workshop on Plasma Physics (LAWPP 2017) took place at the main campus of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City, Mexico, on September 4, 2017—September 8, 2017, organized by the Sociedad Mexicana de Física Division of Plasma Physics. This was the third time LAWPP was held in Mexico, following those in 1992 and 2005. The main mission of this series of meetings is to promote plasma physics in the region, providing a proper forum, as well as collaborations between scientists within Latin America, and broadly across the world. However, while it is a regional event in nature, it fulfilled its objective of bringing in an important international undertone. Furthermore, a wide range of topics were covered, in the fields of space and astrophysical plasmas, controlled nuclear fusion, laser-produced plasmas, dense magnetized plasmas, and industrial and environmental applications of plasmas. We are pleased to introduce the Special Issue for Plenary and Invited Papers from the 18th China National Conference on Plasma Science and Technology (CNCPST). The associated conference, which all the guest editors had the honor to attend, took place on July 26, 2017–July 29, 2017, in Xi’an, Shaanxi, China. The conference General Chair was Prof. C. L. Liu, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an, and the Technical Program Chair was Prof. C. Chang, Xi’an Jiaotong University. A total of 12 plenary talks, 36 invited talks, 159 oral talks, and 312 posters provided an excellent platform for academic exchanges for researchers to enhance scientific communication, and further promote the research development of the Chinese domestic plasma science and technology. While the conference generally used the Chinese language, several of the opening speakers presented their talks in English, and several presented both in English and Chinese, mainly for the benefit of our English-speaking contingent. The conference was attended by high-level Chinese faculty and scientists, as well as a large contingent of students. The IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS) is an annual meeting of the plasma physics community known for the broad range of topics addressed as well as for its varied international locations. The 42nd ICOPS was held in Belek, Antalya, Turkey, on May 24–28, 2015. It was the first time that ICOPS was held in Turkey and the region. The General Chair of ICOPS 2015 was Prof. Lütfi Öksüz from Suleyman Demirel University (Isparta, Turkey), the Technical Program Chair was Dr. Christine Coverdale from Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, NM, USA), and the conference Liaison was Prof. Edl Schamiloglu from the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque, NM, USA). As is traditional, the conference consists of all plasma science topics including 7 technical sessions and 35 subsessions. There were almost 400 registrants at ICOPS 2015, and over 500 abstracts are included in the conference. This ICOPS 2015 meeting especially attracted attendance from the Middle East, China, and Russia. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
