This paper proposes an active resonance circuit based on multiple series gaps (MSG) with voltage-dividing network and self-charging trigger device. The working principle of active resonance circuit, MSG, and triggering device is described in detail. To determine the optimal parameter setting of MSG, the effects of the voltage frequency, equalizing resistance, and voltage-dividing capacitance on the voltage distribution of MSG are analyzed by simulation. To realize the interrupting process of short fault current and determine the operation requirements of the main devices of precharge direct current (dc) circuit breaker, a simulation model of interrupting short fault current is performed. Furthermore, an experiment of four-series gaps is presented to verify the turn-on characteristic of the MSG and an experiment of artificial current zero is set up to testify the feasibility of the active resonance circuit. The simulation and experimental results show that the active resonance circuit proposed in this paper can generate an artificial zero current and is suitable for precharge dc circuit breaker. The series configuration of fast semiconductor switches seems to be the key component in the high-voltage and fast rising time pulse generation. In this approach, two important issues must be considered. The first is to provide a safe operating condition for the switches in transient intervals. The second is to design a gate drive system with the capability of driving a large number of discrete devices simultaneously. The aim of this paper is to obviate these two requirements. First, different factors affecting the unbalanced voltage sharing between the series switches are discussed. In this investigation, the switch-to-ground parasitic capacitance effect has been recognized as the major effect on the unbalanced voltage sharing in the transient interval. Two schemes for abating this effect are proposed. To solve the unbalanced voltage distribution, the structure with a snubber circuit in the clamp mode operation is suggested. This scheme can be used for any number of switches without destructively affecting their behavior. In addition, the output pulse with a fast rising time could be obtained by the proposed gate drive system. In order to evaluate the operation of the proposed structure, a stacked switch with the voltage capability of 36 kV is tested experimentally. The characteristics of the obtained pulse are the fast rising time (69.5 ns) with the dV/dt of 460 kv/ \mu \texts and the wide range of the pulsewidth adjusting to 0.5–15 \mu \texts . The parallel operation of array microhollow cathode (MHC) discharges is studied to generate high density of electrons owing to its multichannel MHC discharges. To ignite all the holes synchronously in one pulse, a pretrigger device is introduced, which is composed of three layers (two electrode layers and a dielectric layer). With the pretrigger process, some initial electrons can be injected into the holes, which makes array MHCs easier to ignite and improves the behavior of parallel operation. In this paper, the array MHC discharges with pretrigger in one pulse mode are presented and the influence on the parallel operation of the pretrigger process is studied. This paper shows how to use modular Marx multilevel converter diode ( \textM^3 CD) modules to apply unipolar or bipolar high-voltage pulses for pulsed power applications. The \textM^3 CD cells allow the assembly of a multilevel converter without needing complex algorithms and parameter measurement to balance the capacitor voltages. This paper also explains how to supply all the modular cells in order to ensure galvanic isolation between control circuits and power circuits. Working performances of laser-triggered vacuum switch (LTVS) mainly rely on the interactions of laser with target materials. Influences from target configuration, which is one of key factors in the interactions, are neglected so far. The trigger performances of LTVS with different target configurations are studied in this paper. Relevant influence factors about target configurations are discussed briefly based on theoretical analysis about the trigger process. The test prototype is established based on detachable vacuum chamber. The trigger characteristics of LTVS with different target structures, target depths, and laser focal positions are compared. The relationships between target configurations and trigger performances of LTVS are analyzed and discussed. The preferred targets in LTVS are suggested while considering its lifetime. The test results prove that the conical target shows the best trigger performances compared to other targets. Due to the enlarged laser irradiated area and shortened plasma moving distance, the delay time of LTVS reduces with the decrease in conical target angle and the increase in target depth, while the delay time is controlled within 32 ns. Benefited from laser reflection and plasma collision, the trigger performances of conical targets can be enhanced by focusing laser on the target side surface. High-frequency power amplifiers can be equipped with complementary pulse-compressor systems to fulfill the advanced cavity power requirements. Microwave pulse compression is a power extraction method based on pulsewidth reduction and electronic triggering. The cavity is fed by pulsed-RF source, the resonance is evolved at $t\geq t_{0}$ , $t_{0}=\textrm {cavity}$ filling time. Established standing waves or resonance condition is brokendown by triggered plasma switch programmed with adjustable delay and pulsewidth. This causes the stored energy to be transmitted as shorter output RF-pulse. The implementation of a microwave pulse compression system requires careful measurements and structural modifications to be able to tune design parameters for optimal setup. In the scope of this paper, the experimental results are obtained for different waveguide lengths and various load configurations (to exploit new opportunities). All connections, iris configuration, and precise adjustment of plasma triggering have been set up cautiously. The cavity gain is increased up to 23 dB with trigatron driving improvements. Using magnetic fields to control the vacuum arc is a major way to improve the breaking capacity of vacuum interrupters. Besides the single transverse magnetic field (TMF) and single axial magnetic field (AMF), new type of TMF-AMF contact and TMF-TMF contact structures have been put forward to control the vacuum arc in recent years. In this paper, three different structural contacts are used in the experiments. The arc evolution was captured by an high-speed digital video camera, and at the same time, the arc current and arc voltage wave were recorded. The experiment was conducted under current ranging from 5 to 20 kA (root mean square) and 10 mm of gap distance. There are 12 current shots performed on one contact design. There are four current levels in the experiment which are 5, 10, 15, and 20 kA, and three tests are taken for each current level. The results showed that for TMF-AMF contacts, under low current (I = 5 or 10 kA), the arcs of the two kinds of contacts both kept diffused and rotating. Under high current (I = 20 kA), the arc of the TMF-AMF contact with six slots was constricted and rotated on the plate, and the melting was uniform and slight. As for the eight-slot contacts, the arc was constricted but did not rotate which resulted in significant melting in the local region. As for TMF-TMF contacts, the result is similar under low current, while the arc was constricted and rotated quickly on the inner plate under high current. The simulation results show that when the arc core is located on the outer plate; the total Lorentz force is near zero. Recently, inductive energy storage systems have attracted interests due to high energy densities. The high-temperature superconducting pulsed-power supply (HTSPPS) is one inductive PS topology for electromagnetic launching system. The topology can achieve a high amplitude load current and cut down the electrical losses due to the zero resistance characteristic of superconducting inductors. However, in this topology, the integrated gated commuted thyristor is used as a switch and cannot withstand high current, which limits the expansion of the system. Besides, it has significant current amplification ability as a single unit, but one module cannot provide sufficient amplitude and appropriate pulsewidth for the load current of the electromagnetic launching. In this paper, by applying the principle of inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices (ICCOS) in the HTSPPS, a novel circuit topology called HTSPPS with ICCOS is presented. This topology is analyzed and the multiple modules system is established. Simulation results show that the HTSPPS with ICCOS exceeds the current limitations of the original one and ensures the reliable cutting off of the main switch. It has potential applications in the future of high-energy systems while reducing the cost greatly. By asynchronous cooperative triggered discharge of the multiple HTSPPS with ICCOS modules in parallel, the appropriate amplitude and flat shape current of the load can be achieved through the careful design of the trigger time. This paper presents the design and construction of a sample of Marx pulsed generator based on boost converter (BC) pulse-forming networks (BCPFNs). BCPFN is used instead of the conventional Marx floors for constructing this pulsed generator. BCPFN is carried out by connecting inductors and capacitors in series and parallel modes, respectively, by using solid-state switches, and during this procedure the pulsed generator converts to BC temporarily and increases the voltage of capacitors uniformly to a considerable value. This technique causes an increase in the discharging voltage level to the load that is many times more than its dc voltage source by charging the capacitors to a greater level. In order to take advantage of the benefits of Marx generator and PFN, this paper suggests a new circuit with the minimum number of switches. It means, to compose BCPFN and Marx, we have tried to design the circuit with fewer switches and instead of it we have achieved our desired performance with changing the operating mode in the states of BC, PFN, BCPFN, and BCPFN Marx. The results are simulated with MATLAB software. At the end, the experimental results of the construction of the above-mentioned system at low-power levels are presented, and the topology’s accuracy is proved by comparing them to the results of simulation. One of the critical components of high energy density pulsed power systems used to generate short high-voltage and high-power impulses is gas-filled plasma closing switch (PCS). In recent years, significant research efforts have been aimed at finding environmentally friendly gases which can be used in the PCSs, and several gases including dry air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon, and their mixtures have been considered as potentially suitable working fluids in such switches. However, the lack of knowledge of the breakdown characteristics of complex switching topologies filled with these gases limits their practical applications. Therefore, further investigation of the breakdown performance of PCSs is required, in order to establish their applicability for practical use in high-voltage pulsed power systems. This paper reports on the investigation of the breakdown characteristics of a triggered PCS topology with corona discharge electrodes. The self-breakdown voltage of the switch, variation in the self-breakdown voltage, time to breakdown, and jitter have been obtained for the switch filled with “zero grade” air, N2, CO2, and an Ar/O2 mixture up to a pressure of 10 bar (abs). This paper reports on the study of physical processes in a high-current vacuum arc shunted by semiconductor elements. The switching dynamics between a vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) and an assembly of several semiconductor elements connected in parallel to the VCB is investigated. The breaking capacity of a VCB-thyristor system is analyzed. It is found that at the instant of current switching, the arc can operate at a rather low voltage of 8–10 V. It is shown that there exists a certain limiting mode close to the conditions for current switching. In this mode, at least two cathode spots are observed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper discusses a study made for good asymmetric three-stage electromagnetic coilgun launching medium-weight projectile. Different lengths, number of turns, and switching times are chosen for each individual coil to get better results. Two detailed investigated models have been presented, including the effect of the switching time. Medium-caliber projectile of \text weight = 0.5 kg is employed in this paper. The results confirm that the second model asymmetric coilgun has 16.96% higher output speed, 63.92% lower length, and 57.5% lower launching time than the first model asymmetric coilgun. A 700-kA gas switch with graphite electrodes for pulsed power supply module has been developed. This paper describes the design, construction, and testing of the high-current gas switch and its trigger system. The two-electrode gas switch is selected, which suffers high peak and fast rise time currents. The trigger generator based on resonant charging of a pulse transformer is constructed to trigger the gas spark. An electrodynamic force model of switch electrodes is established. The electrodynamic force of connecting wires is also calculated. By comparison of the mechanical strengths of polyformaldehyde, epoxy, and fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) rods, where FRP rods are selected as switch rods, the experimental results show that the mechanical strength of the switch increases by 200%. Extensive electric testing has proven the operating parameters of the switch and its trigger system. The experimental results show that the measured discharge current waveform is demonstrated to be over a 700-kA peak current and a 500- \mu \texts pulsewidth. This paper presents the interleaved operation of a soft-switching boost converter operated in boundary conduction mode. First, the operating principle of the converter as well as the basic concept of the interleaving is presented. Then, the dynamic behavior is modeled using the z-transform to obtain a converter model that is independent of the switching frequency. With the model, the stability of the closed-loop system with a proportional–integral (PI) controller is analyzed. It is shown that an adaptive PI controller can be easily implemented to achieve a minimal settling time over a wide operating range. Finally, the controller is validated with two converters with a 40-kW nominal output power and an output voltage of 3 kV. Our understanding of warm dense matter (WDM) properties will help to unravel the formation and evolution of giant planet, including gaseous giants or mega-Earths. However, the production of WDM in the laboratory is limited to samples on the order of tens of micrometers. This raises many challenges to measure the properties of WDM using standard diagnostics. In this paper, we propose a new method to produce WDM samples using pulsed-power machines. We numerically demonstrate that the early expansion phase of the sample, usually encountered in pulsed-power systems, can be virtually eliminated using a current switching scheme. To avoid mixing the plasma and WDM states, the present strategy uses a gas-puff $Z$ -pinch as a closing plasma switch. During the first part of the discharge, most of the current flows inside a gas-puff $Z$ -pinch, preventing the heating of the sample. During this phase, the gas $Z$ -pinch radially converges toward the sample. When the $Z$ -pinch finally reaches the sample, all the $Z$ -pinch current switches to the sample and rapidly heats it. The strong azimuthal field generated by the $Z$ -pinch prevents the expansion of the sample. If the initial gas pressure is carefully chosen, the sample reaches a quasi-homogeneous WDM state. The particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation of an A6 magnetron with diffraction output (MDO) in our earlier work shows the peak output power (especially the short power pulse with several nanoseconds duration) is lowered when electrons with high energy strike the anode block, which leads to the emission of secondary and backscattered electrons. In addition, the PIC simulation for a 12-cavity MDO also shows when secondary electron emission occurs, the boundary for neighboring modes becomes more complicated than before. Replacing tapered cavities by single-stepped cavities in a relativistic MDO increases the interaction space where the charged particles interact with the induced RF waves. The electronic efficiency of the A6 relativistic MDO as well as the 12-cavity MDO with single-stepped cavities driven by the transparent cathode can be over 70% with gigawatts output power level. And with single-stepped cavities, the distance between the cathode and the wall of relativistic MDO is increased such that the possibility for electrons with high energy striking on the wall is decreased, which results in less emission of secondary and backscattered electrons under the same applied voltage. The PIC simulation demonstrated that in the 12-cavity MDO with single-stepped cavities driven by the transparent cathode with 400-kV applied voltage, the electrons with above 500 eV from cathode under the crossed electromagnetic field can strike on the anode block of MDO, resulting in a secondary and backscattered electron current that can cause different modes to be prevalent or stop the designed mechanism from working. Especially when applied with short voltage pulse with 10-ns duration, the output power pulse is shorted with peak power lowered. Paralleled pulse-forming units (PFUs) with different triggering delays might be a paramagnetic way for generating flat-topped current wave for electromagnetic launch. Many researchers have reported that multiple capacitive storage PFUs were implemented such current waves in laboratories. However, due to its low energy density, the applications of the capacitive pulsed-power supplies are limited. Since the inductor has advantages in energy density, the inductor pulsed-power supply becomes one of the hottest topics recently. The slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid meat grinder with inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices proposed by Tsinghua University has demonstrated its advantage and applicability recently. Using this kind of topology, this paper proposes the design of an inductive storage PFU with a stored energy of 100-kJ. The maximum load current reaches to 50 kA and its pulsewidth is at least 5 ms. The optimized inductive storage PFU shows superiority in contrast to the capacitive storage PFU with the same energy. The STRETCH meat grinder is one typical inductive pulsed-power supply topology for electromagnetic launch system. It has remarkable current amplification ability as a single unit, but one module cannot provide enough amplitude and width for the load current of the railgun launching. This paper discusses the effects of different triggering delays on the load current with two STRETCH meat grinder modules. To reduce the magnetic field coupling between the two modules, the two main switches are opened simultaneously. To make the load current waveform with no notch, the thyristor of the first module is triggered when its pulse-forming capacitor is fully reversely charged. For the thyristor of the second module, we consider several time points of triggering delay. Because of the practical constraint for the maximum rail current that ensures no rail erosion, the rectangular waveform is the most appropriate load current waveform. Therefore, the comparing criterion can be defined as the ratio of the load current waveform area and its maximum rectangle area at different current levels. Higher ratio means that the current is more like a rectangular wave and is better accordingly. Based on the above criterion and extensive simulation research, we found that the best delay time is the moment when the capacitor is reversely charging the inductor completely. High-power electromagnetic (HPEM) pulse can be delivered to electronic equipment in two ways. One is through the application of radiated fields, and the other is through conduction along cables and wires. In this paper, a high-voltage pulse generator using a spiral Blumlein pulse forming line (PFL) was developed for the test of HPEM effect by radiation and conduction. For the conduction test, a spiral strip Blumlein PFL filled with transformer oil is employed to generate high voltage (>300~kV) and long duration (50 ns) pulse. High-power ultrawideband pulse for the radiation test was generated by combining a TEM horn antenna with the high-voltage generator. The peak-to-peak value of electric field intensity of a radiated pulse is 53.3 kV/m at a distance of 10 m away from the antenna. With the development of pulsed-power technology, more and more applications require high-voltage and heavy-current pulse switches. Laser-triggered vacuum switch combines laser technology, vacuum switch technology, and three-electrode trigger switch technology, and has the advantages of heavy current capability, good isolation from the main circuit, and short delay time. In this paper, the 1-D thermal conduction model was developed to analyze the influence of laser energy on the velocity of initial plasma. The relationship between the ablation area and the laser energy was derived. Power supplies have played crucial role to improve and extend plasma applications. Several dc, pulsed, and radio frequency (RF) stabilized power supplies have been developed over a wide range of frequencies and voltage waveforms. However, the influence of voltage waveform on the plasma densification, mainly due to the secondary electrons emission from the electrodes, has not been quite explored. This paper proposes an asymmetric pulsed bipolar power supply, adjustable in frequency, amplitude, pulsewidth, and number of pulses for generation of cold plasmas. Short period positive pulses, between longer negative pulses, increase greatly the secondary electron emission from the electrodes and, consequently, the plasma ionization rate. Short pulses (ns) are obtained by the phase shift between each carrier, and the high-intensity pulses are obtained by cascading the cell submodules in a half-bridge cascade topology, using a modular half-bridge converter configuration. The intensity of the positive and negative pulses can be varied independently. There is no unintended dc voltage level between the electrodes, which appear in RF plasmas. The plasma generated in this way is free of electric arc and can be kept stable within a broader range of operating parameters, mainly the voltage and the working gas pressure. The quench protection switch (QPS) is an indispensable component ensuring the safety of the magnet coils of a superconducting Tokamak when a quench happens. In this paper, the second commutation process of a QPS based on artificial current zero is investigated. In this process, the current, which has already transferred from the bypass switch to the main circuit breaker, is forced to commutate from the vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) to the discharge resistor by the countercurrent. An LC oscillating circuit is applied to generate oscillating current to simulate the direct current near its peak which is about 20 kA. The countercurrent with frequencies of 500 and 1000 Hz is provided by a commutation branch. The equivalence of the experimental interrupting process compared with the practical situation is analyzed. Two kinds of vacuum interrupters of the VCB are used in experiments. One kind is equipped with contacts generating transverse magnetic field, and axial magnetic field contacts are used in another one. The experimental results indicate that the initial process of the vacuum arc before injecting the countercurrent has crucial impacts on the interruption performance. High-voltage (HV) pulses are used in pulsed electric field (PEF) applications to provide an effective electroporation process, a process in which harmful microorganisms are disinfected when subjected to a PEF. Depending on the PEF application, different HV pulse specifications are required such as the pulse-waveform shape, the voltage magnitude, the pulse duration, and the pulse repetition rate. In this paper, a generic pulse-waveform generator (GPG) is proposed, and the GPG topology is based on half-bridge modular multilevel converter (HB-MMC) cells. The GPG topology is formed of four identical arms of series-connected HB-MMC cells forming an H-bridge. Unlike the conventional HB-MMC-based converters in HVdc transmission, the GPG load power flow is not continuous which leads to smaller size cell capacitors utilization; hence, smaller footprint of the GPG is achieved. The GPG topology flexibility allows the controller software to generate a basic multilevel waveform which can be manipulated to generate the commonly used PEF pulse waveforms. Therefore, the proposed topology offers modularity, redundancy, and scalability. The viability of the proposed GPG converter is validated by MATLAB/Simulink simulation and experimentation. A 200 kJ pulsed power system (PPS) has been built up to drive pulsed plasma devices. This PPS consists of two 100 kJ capacitor bank modules, each comprising of five capacitors of each 178~\mu \textF , a discharge switch, and a pulse-shaping unit. When both the banks are charged simultaneously to −15 kV using full charging technique, it delivers a peak current 100 kA at the load (damping resistor and pulse-shaping inductor). Later on, a plasma system will be attached at the load which will also have an inductive and resistive effect. A fiber-optic triggering unit controls both the modules and there exists a flexibility of sometimes operating a single module only, besides there are provisions for further up gradation of the PPS to a targeted 600 kJ. Prior to this development, PSpice simulation was carried out to estimate the parameters of the circuit components to achieve the required wave pulse with precision. Using these parameters, a design of the PPS was made keeping into account about the critical issues involved and the ratings of the components, some of which were fabricated in house. Magnetic pulse compression (MPC) system has been widely used over a few decades as a technique for producing short duration, high peak power pulses reliably. Novel MPC system which do not contain external demagnetization circuits, have broadened the appliance of MPC systems, in which circuit in each level of storage energy capacitors is composed of two capacitors in series, and the two-capacitance combination is connected to the output of previous stage, so that not only the pulse is compressed but also the voltage is doubled as well. In this paper, a 20-kHz high repetition-rate pulse generator with adjustable output amplitude based on Novel MPC system is presented. The pulse generator makes use of commercially available insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), switching a capacitor bank into a ferrite transformer together with a voltage doubling circuit. The capacitor bank is charged to 530 V by a three-phase rectifier, also switched by a commercial diode. The amplitude of the output voltage of the pulse generator is controlled by the amplitude of the gate voltage of the IGBTs. Pulses with a width of 70 ns can be generated with repetition rates up to 20 kHz in burst. The amplitude can be controlled from 5 to 40 kV into a $500~\Omega $ resistive load. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The meat grinder is a basic circuit for inductive pulsed-power supply (IPPS). Based on meat grinder, the Institute of Advanced Technology proposed a circuit called the slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid (STRETCH) meat grinder, in which an Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristors (IGCT) is selected as the main switch. Tsinghua University proposed the STRETCH meat grinder with inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices (ICCOS) in which the main switch is replaced by a thyristor and the ICCOS subcircuit is introduced to turn off the main switch. To reduce the opening switch voltage and increase the current turning-off capacity for IPPS, this paper presents a novel circuit topology named the meat grinder with self-charged capacitor and thyristors (SECTs). The key idea of the SECT topology is to turn off the primary current by the energy transfer capacitor, which is precharged. The meat grinder with SECT has larger capacity than the STRETCH meat grinder because it replaces the IGCT with a thyristor and is simpler than the STRETCH meat grinder with ICCOS because it only needs one capacitor. This paper addresses inductive pulsed power generators and their major components. Different inductive storage designs, such as solenoids, toroids, and force-balanced coils, are briefly presented and their advantages and disadvantages are mentioned. Special emphasis is given to inductive circuit topologies, which have been investigated in railgun research, such as the XRAM, meat grinder, or pulse transformer topologies. One section deals with opening switches as they are indispensable for inductive storages and another one deals briefly with superconducting magnetic energy storage for pulsed power applications. In the case of back-to-back capacitor banks switching, the inrush current arcs can locally melt the contact surfaces of vacuum interrupters (VIs) during the prestrike process. The contact materials significantly influence the behaviours of the inrush current prestrike arcs. The objective of this paper is to determine the influence of contact materials on prestrike arc behaviours of VIs during capacitive making processes. Six identical 12-kV VIs were used in the experiment after the proposed conditioning. The contact diameter of the VIs was 48 mm, and the insulating envelope was transparent. There were no metal vapour shields inside the VIs to enable the observation of the prestrike arcs. Two different contact materials (CuCr50/50 and CuW10/90) were used in the experiment. Test inrush currents were set to 5-, 10-, and 20-kA peak values, respectively. The inrush current arc features were recorded by a high-speed charge-coupled device video camera. It is discovered that the contact materials have a significant influence on the prestrike gaps. Moreover, the prestrike arcs in VIs with the CuW10/90 contact material tend to be more diffuse than those in VIs with the CuCr50/50 contact material. Pulsed-power generator based on linear transformer driver (LTD) technology has been used to demonstrate waveform control for pulsed atmospheric discharge. This kind of discharge load is known for its time-varying impedance where constant voltage usually does not result in constant current. In this paper, an LTD system has been combined with a field-programmable gate array in order to generate a flexible voltage waveform which, in turn, dictates the discharge current. The experimental results have proved that the current of a discharge load can be arbitrarily controlled, to a certain extent, by properly adjusting the applied voltage. In this paper, a novel method for high-repetition-rate high-power radio frequency (RF) pulse generation, which involves only passive solid-state devices and is capable of being used for generating high power microwaves using a low-to-high power converting scheme based on nonlinear self-compression is proposed. The method is also expected to be of low jitter. In the proposed circuit, two high voltage diodes with proper reverse recovery characteristics are used. The simulation results show that the proposed circuit generates RF pulses, with central frequencies up to gigahertz range. By applying a sub-kilowatt power supply, the maximum output power was well over 10 kW. This power can be increased up to megawatt order using power supplies of kilowatt range, as predicted by the theory. Simulations also indicated the possibility of 130-kHz pulse repetition rate as predicted by the theoretical analysis. The proposed method has been shown to work properly by an experimental setup. The setup showed the repetition rates up to 5000 pulses/s, which was capable of being increased to the simulation result using high quality circuit elements just as those used in the simulated circuit. We are currently carrying out a research to achieve the predicted upper limits of the power at gigahertz range RF generation and the results will be presented in their future reports. Megavolt-class-triggered switches play a key role in large-induction voltage adder accelerators. This paper introduces a 2.8-MV, low-inductance, low-jitter, electrical-triggered, gas SF6 switch. The main section is a $V/n$ switch and the pretrigger section is a trigatron switch. Based on electric field simulation, experiment, and analysis, the structure and spacing of gaps, location of trigger disk, diaphragm, and switch inductance are all discussed. The primary test indicates that the switch can be operated in the range of 0.85–2.76 MV with the pressure of the SF6 changing from 0.1 to 0.9 MPa. The self-breakdown voltage is linearly related to the logarithm of the pressure, as the gap spacing and the voltage rise time are fixed. Three working modes were observed: self-breakdown, self-triggered, and ex-triggered. In the triggered modes, the switch jitter is <3 ns and the switch inductance is usually below 150 nH. This paper details the experimental evaluation and simulation of a 4-kV n-type gate turn-OFF thyristor (GTO) designed for pulsed power applications. The primary criteria of evaluation are rate of current rise ( dI/dt ), turn-ON delay time ( T_{D}) , and resistance of the device during turn-ON transients [ R_{\mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON}}(t)$ ]. The device under test (DuT) is an n-type asymmetric-blocking GTO manufactured by Silicon Power (Part No. 14N40A10) with a rated dc blocking voltage of 4 kV. A test circuit was specifically designed to minimize stray inductance in order to capitalize on the dI/dt$ capabilities of the DuT. Experimental data collected from resistance measurements are used to develop a single-switch approximate model for use in simulation. The results of dI/dt$ experiments provide a profile of DuT dI/dt$ operation beyond rated values; specifically dI/dt were readily achieved. A bipolar pulse has been proved to be more advanced in the treatment of tumor because of the elimination of muscle contractions and the effect for ablating nonuniform tissue. In this paper, a new type of modular bipolar pulsed-power generator based on Marx generator with double power charging is proposed. The concept of this generator is charging the two series of capacitors in parallel by two power sources, respectively, and then connecting the capacitors in series through solid-state switches with different control strategies. Utilizing a number of fast solid-state switches, the capacitors can be connected in series with different polarities, so that a positive or negative polarity pulse will be delivered to the load. The simulated models of this generator have been investigated in a PSPICE platform, and a laboratory prototype has been implemented in a laboratory. The simulation and test results verify the operation of the proposed topology in different switching modes. The development of this pulse generator can provide the hardware foundation for the research on biological effect without muscle contraction when the tumors are applied with bipolar pulse electric field. The acceleration grid power supply (AGPS) is an important part of the neutral beam injector (NBI) system. With the increase in NBI power, the requirement for output voltage of the AGPS is becoming higher and higher, even reaching to 1000 kV. As the inverter-type high voltage power supply uses inverters located at the lower voltage side to regulate and cut off the output voltage, it is very suitable for high-voltage applications. The proposed scheme for the AGPS of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) NBI system comprises five stages, where each stage has an inverter-type power supply with an output voltage of 200 kV. This paper investigates the inverter-type power supply based on neutral point clamped three-phase three-level (TPTL) inverter and three-phase step-up transformer, which is equivalent to an insulated TPTL dc–dc converter connected with a dual dc link. In order to design a preferable controller for the inverter-type power supply, the topology and principles of the TPTL dc–dc converter with duty cycle modulation have been analyzed. It indicates that only when the converter operates at a large duty cycle, the output voltage ripple can be limited to ±5%. Hence, the small signal model of the converter at a duty cycle larger than 2/3 is established. Following the mathematical model, a single-loop PID controller has been designed and a 400 V/6 A prototype has been built. The objective of this paper is to investigate an influence of high-frequency high-voltage impulse conditioning on the back-to-back capacitor bank switching performance of vacuum interrupters (VIs). Nine identical 7.2-kV VIs were tested by 80 CO operations after the proposed conditioning. Test inrush currents were set to 0-, 2-, and 5-kA peak. The experimental results showed that this conditioning technology could make an impact on both prestrike and restrike characteristics of VIs. The complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of the prestrike gap d\textrm {pre} followed complementary Weibull distribution. In contrast to VIs without conditioning, three typical prestrike gaps, i.e., CCDF 10% prestrike gap d\overline {10} , CCDF 50% prestrike gap d\overline {50} , and CCDF 90% prestrike gap d\overline {90}\vphantom {\sum RRR} , decreased by 39%, 19%, and 4% at most, respectively. Besides, the scattering of d\textrm {pre} decreased by 52% at most. Furthermore, the conditioning technology had an influence on the feature of restrike waveform through variation of field emission current. The spark gap switch is the key element in any pulsed power system, which directly determines the pulse repetitive frequency of the system. The dielectric recovery data of the spark gap play a basic role, but they have not yet been adequately studied for repetitive pulse charge conditions. This paper describes some of the factors that affect the recovery of spark gap switch for pulse-charged operation. A two-pulse technique has been used, in which the first pulse is applied to the spark gap to overvolt the gap and initiate the breakdown and the second pulse is used to determine the recovery voltage of the gap. The effects of electrode size, pulse rise time, and conduction current on the spark gap recovery performance are presented. Experiments were performed by using a double-pulse generator capable of generating 40-kV pulses with a delay of 1 ms–1 s. Spark gap electrodes of 34-, 40-, and 68-mm diameters and a point type were used in the study. The effect of voltage rise rate was studied by changing the charging capacitor to 100, 500, and 1000 nF in the circuit. An intermediate plateau was observed in the spark gap recovery curves. In addition, an increase in the output impedance resulted in a decrease in the time taken for the recovery of the spark gap. With the rapid developments in pulse power technology, the gas spark switch has broadened its application in both industrial fields and research fields, such as the extraction of unconventional gas resources and underwater electrical wire explosion. Thus, the repetitive switch needs high current capability, small breakdown voltage variance, and long lifetime in an airtight cavity. The performances of the switch directly influence the output characteristics of the system, but electrode erosion is inevitable, which may decrease the self-breakdown voltage and the lifetime. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the electrode erosion characteristics under adverse conditions. The cathode showed a worse erosion surface. This paper describes the development of a small field-distortion spark gap switch. Comprehensive experimental studies made with the switch revealed its self-breakdown characteristics, voltage operating range, time delay and jitter, repetition frequency, and finally the electrode erosion processes and duration of its service lifetime. A series of design improvements were required to be implemented in the switch design. For example, to reduce the structural inductance of the switch and to improve its working characteristics, the main electrode was designed as a circular track structure. Similarly, to increase the operation stability and reduce the self-breakdown probability, the trigger electrode was designed as a disk-like structure. Moreover, to balance the gas pressure in the discharge region and increase the stability during closure, a circular hole was added at the center of the trigger electrode. The compact switch has a small size of only 150 mm $\times42$ mm, a weight of 1.5 kg, and can be successfully operated at a voltage over 110 kV, at a repetition rate between 1 and 50 Hz and having a jitter of less than 4 ns. In this paper, an adjustable magnetic switch (AMS) based on splice winding is investigated numerically and experimentally. The proposed AMS has advantage of high power level, high repetitive rate capability, long lifetime achievability, and electrical parameters tunability, which meets the growing requirements of the military and industrial application of pulsed power technology. Adjustment of the electrical parameters of magnetic switch is achieved by altering the number of windings via the modification of the joint points between the AMS and the main circuit. Specifically, basic principle of the AMS is analyzed based on characteristics of the magnetic switch. Detailed design considerations are described for achieving modification of the winding’s number ranging from 1 to $M$ (positive integer larger than 1), which is limited by the insulation density, easily and reliably. In order to verify the design, two typical electrical parameters of an AMS are numerically calculated and simulated by the circuit simulation software. Accordingly, a test experiment platform was setup in our laboratory and the primary experimental study demonstrates that the AMS can successfully alter the electrical parameters with results similar to the calculation. A typical ( 1-\cos \omega t)$ pulse with rise times of 4 and 5 \mu \text{s} , a peak voltage of approximately 20 kV, and a peak current of over 1.0 kA was achieved on the capacitor load. This paper describes a compact high storage density inductive–capacitive storage module. The module is based on high-power opening switches using inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices commutation principle and a high storage density Brooks inductor. These opening switches, being able to switch-OFF pulse currents up to 14.5 kA by the counter-current subcircuit, make use of the general property of a standard high-power thyristors impedance transition from closing state to blocking state. The experimental results show that with the primary capacitor and counter-current commutation subcircuit charged voltage 3 and 2.5 kV, respectively, the charged current of the Brooks-type inductor is about 14.5 kA, with a charged time of about 4.5 ms. The output peak current of the inductive storage module is about 21 kA. The total stored energy is about 54.9 kJ while the energy density of the inductor is approximately 6.69 MJ/ \textm^3 , which is not including the primary storage and commutation unit. Many approaches exist for energy storage and delivery to the load, including high-power relativistic applications. One of the best solutions for the driver of high-power relativistic applications is the Marx generator. This paper describes the design, fabrication, and experimental validation of a Marx generator consisting of capacitors, spark-gap switches, and resistors. It is designed as an eight-stage Marx circuit to reach an output voltage level as low as −500 kV, and it is directly connected to the Blumlein pulse-forming line (PFL) to achieve more than 100 ns of the full-width at half-maximum. Experiments are performed with a solution load in a manner similar to having a coaxial structure in a high vacuum with a pressure of below 0.5\, \times \, 10^-5 torr, to prevent breakdown and measure the amplitude of the negative high-voltage pulse waveform. The solution load is designed to capture the short-pulse output of the PFL with a rise time of less than 25 ns and a voltage level of approximately −500 kV. The experimental results show that the output pulse can be used as a source to generate an intense relativistic electron beam at the gun for high-power relativistic applications. High-performance trigger generators with high amplitude, fast rise time, low jitter are essential for large-scaled pulsed-power systems. Most of the trigger generators are also tiny multistage pulsed-power systems with complicated structures. In this paper, a high-performance trigger generator was proposed by combining the advantages of low-jitter semiconductor switch and high-power gas switch. An avalanche transistor Marx circuit was developed. It was used to trigger a two-stage Marx generator based on trigatron switch. The output characteristics of the Marx circuit based on avalanche transistors and the two-stage Marx generator were studied. The experimental results show that a subnanosecond jitter, nanosecond rise time, high-voltage trigger generator can be achieved by triggering trigatron switch with an avalanche transistor circuit. A pseudospark switch with two hollow electrodes separated by a ceramic disc in between with a trigger plug inserted near the hole has been fabricated, and it was successfully operated. In this paper, a 29-kV anode voltage, 3.6 kA at 2.2 kHz with 11-ns rise time, has been achieved and operated, successfully. A simple trigger pulse has also been designed, built, and operated effectively reaching more than 1.6-kV trigger voltage that was sufficient to ignite the gas inside the cathode. In this paper, the basic structure and working mechanism of laser triggered vacuum switch (LTVS) are briefly introduced, the processes of primary plasma production and expansion are also analyzed. A series of experiments have been carried out under different conditions of LTVS, such as laser energy levels, voltages, and polarity configuration modes. The relationship of conduction and jitter time delays among the laser energy, voltage, and polarity are described, and the effect of main electrode and the expansion of primary plasma are analyzed. The theoretical basis for structure optimization design of LTVS is provided. Under positive polarity configuration that is beneficial to generate the cathode spots, the high working reliability and small time delay of LTVS are verified by the experiments. Two-electrode graphite spark gap switch (TGSGS) is used as the main discharge switch and triggered by a reliable trigger generator in pulsed power conditioning system (PPCS). There would be 108 energy modules in PPCS working at the same time. The reliable operating and jitters of the trigger generators will have impact on the PPCSs performance. In this paper, the working modes of the TGSGS are discussed and the performance of trigger generators in PPCS is tested and presented. A protection strategy of the trigger generator in PPCS is introduced, and effect of the blocking capacitor on the trigger pulse transmission is analyzed and tested. The protection strategy of the trigger generator based on blocking capacitor and fuse can effectively prevent the energy anti-irrigation failure when the pulse transformer core saturated. The blocking capacitor has some effect on the trigger pulse transmission, and has the larger capacitance, getting the higher peak amplitude on the cathode of the TGSGS. It is tried to discuss the working characteristics of the thyristors, and proposes a selection reference of the thyristors in this and other similar applications. This paper describes the design and implementation of a three-phase resonant converter with low ripple and high control accuracy. Based on a three-phase LCC-type resonant converter—which has advantages of low ripple, high-efficiency, and high-power density compared with a single-phase converter—a high-voltage power supply with low ripple (<0.1%) was designed. In addition to the general merits of an LCC-type resonant converter operating at continuous conduction mode—including soft switching, low conduction loss, and current source characteristics—the proposed scheme uses only one phase under a light-load condition by having different leg designs of the gate drive circuit and snubber parameters. This allows the design to overcome the operational constraints of the general LCC-type resonant converter. The distinctive design of the three-phase converter structure provides high efficiency and low ripple not only during rated operation, but also under light-load conditions. In order to analyze the high performance of the proposed scheme from no load to rated load, a PSPICE simulation was carried out. Comparison results with a conventional LCC-type resonant converter based on a single-phase structure are analyzed from the viewpoints of output ripple, losses, and operable load range. Using the proposed converter, a 20-kV, 20-kW high-voltage dc power supply design and implementation was presented with a superior gate drive circuit. Finally, the superiority of the proposed converter was verified through a simulation and experimental results. It was experimentally confirmed that the developed power supply achieves high performance in terms of efficiency (98%), operable load range (0.5–20 kV), and low ripple (0.05%), with a high power density. A number of high-power applications require a transportable high-energy, high-current GW generator to drive a pulsed power system at the output. A first prototype, based on exploding wire technology and using an H-bridge circuit configuration, was developed at Loughborough University a few years ago and has been previously reported. The present stage of the work has necessitated the development of a more powerful and energetic source, and this is now based on inductive storage technology. A 400 kJ capacitor bank is connected by a high-Coulomb explosively driven closing switch with an air-cored 0.6 MV transformer, an exploding wire array, and a high-power diode based on a polarity-dependent spark-gap completing the arrangement. The GW generator, including the command and control module, is accommodated in two ISO containers. A repetitive 0.6 MV, 10 GW Tesla-driven Blumlein pulsed power generator, with an overall energy efficiency in excess of 90%, has been designed, manufactured and demonstrated by the Pulsed Power Group at Loughborough University. This paper describes the application of various numerical techniques used to design a successful generator, such as filamentary modeling and electrostatic and transient circuit analysis. All the major parameters of both the Tesla transformer and the Blumlein pulse-forming line were determined, enabling accurate modeling of the overall unit to be performed. The wide-bandwidth embedded sensors used to monitor the dynamic characteristics of the overall system are also presented. Experimental results obtained during this major experimental program are compared with theoretical predictions and the way ahead toward generating faster output voltage impulses is considered. Field distortion gas switches are extensively used in pulsed power systems. Switch performance typically degrades because of electrode erosion, which directly influences the output parameters, stability, and reliability of pulsed power systems. With the same value of $pd$ , different pressure and gap lengths in gas switches can affect electrode erosion property and thus, the subsequent performance degradation, but few results have been published. In this paper, repetitive discharges have been undertaken in a three-electrode field distortion gas switch with fixed pd$ to study the influence of pressure and gap length on electrode erosion and switch performance. The morphology of electrode surface and time histories of both trigger jitter and the probability of prefire have been investigated during the whole life cycle of the gas switch. The results show that when pd$ is fixed, high pressure and a short gap make for low trigger jitter at the start of the switch life cycle but lead to more severe electrode erosion, expediting the degradation of performance in field-distortion gas switches. This paper describes a modular solid-state switching cell derived from the Marx generator concept to be used in topologies for generating multilevel unipolar and bipolar high-voltage (HV) pulses into resistive loads. The switching modular cell comprises two ON/OFF semiconductors, a diode, and a capacitor. This cell can be stacked, being the capacitors charged in series and their voltages balanced in parallel. To balance each capacitor voltage without needing any parameter measurement, a vector decision diode algorithm is used in each cell to drive the two switches.
