Based on the urgent needs for modularization and miniaturization of the inductive pulsed power supply system, this paper proposes the conceptual design and comparison of 100-kJ inductive storage power modules including four circuit topologies, three of which are proposed in our previous researches. The four circuit topologies are the STRETCH meat grinder, the XRAM with STRETCH meat grinder unit, the XRAM with strongly coupled inductors, and the XRAM with magnetic flux compression effect. The maximum load current of each constructed module is set to be 50 kA and its pulsewidth is at least 5 ms, which are the same as the main electrical properties of an existing 100-kJ capacitive module. A comparative study on energy density among the constructed inductive modules and the existing capacitive module is carried out in depth. Results show that the inductive modules, considering the volume of semiconductor switches and their control circuits, have higher energy density than that of the capacitive module. Among four constructed inductive modules, the XRAM with strongly coupled inductors module has the highest inductive energy density, and the XRAM with magnetic flux compression effect module has relatively better comprehensive performance. This paper is aimed at finding the effect of varying inductive energy storage systems’ (IESSs) inductance on resistance of an electrically exploded conductor-based opening switch and profile of current transferred into load, which has not yet been fully understood. Based on experimental results obtained, it is observed that when the inductance of IESS is varied, the magnitude of load current changes so as to conform to the magnetic flux conservation law but its rise time remains unchanged. Resistance of the opening switch and energy deposited in it has been estimated using recorded voltage and current waveforms. It has been found that with increasing inductance of IESS, the resistance of switch increases, whereas energy deposited in it decreases. Using these estimated values of energy, a possible explanation of observed behavior in resistance is presented. Effect of a mismatch between the inductance of IESS and load is seen to only affect the energy transfer efficiency or magnitude of load current but not its rise time emphasizing the novel finding that for a given load, the rise time of load current is independent of the inductance of IESS. Because it possesses higher current turn-off capability, the inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices (ICCOS) is a better option for the opening switch of an inductive pulsed power supply than the integrated gate commutated thyristor. This paper investigates the counter-current capacitor, which is the key component that determines the turn-off result and the volume of the counter-current branch. The major contributions of this paper include the following: 1) deriving an analytical expression for the minimum precharged capacitor voltage that can reliably turn off the main switch; 2) verifying this expression through a series of experiments within a current range of 0 to 4000 A and an energy range of 0 to 50 kJ; 3) giving an approximate expression for the optimal capacitance that minimizes the precharged energy; and 4) investigating the variation trends of the optimal capacitance and the corresponding optimal precharged energy with varying inductor current. For the electromagnetic rail launcher, the parameters variation has obvious effect on the dynamic performance and efficiency. This paper constructs the system simulation model of the electromagnetic rail launcher by using of Simulink software, and then analyzes the influences on the system dynamic performance for main devices. Based on the parameters and large current condition, the launching efficiency model is constructed, and the energy distribution characteristics are obtained. The loss of rail, armature, and feeder equipment is 38.7%, and the loss of arc extinguishing equipment is about 4.76%, so the heat loss is about 43.46% of total loss. When considering that the other loss is 33.37%, the system energy efficiency is 23.17%. Based on the design of the small prototype, the energy loss characteristics of the full prototype in launch rail and its temperature features are discussed in detail. The peak temperature is 276 °C after 11 continuous shots with converting coefficient being 5000 W/( \textm^2\cdot \text K ), and it can decrease 58 °C if the better convection boundary condition is achieved, which means the rail can meet the requirement of the thermal management. Superconducting pulsed-power supply (SPPS) provides an efficient method for both high-density inductive energy storage and high current pulse generation. An SPPS consisting of eight high-temperature superconducting pulsed-power transformer (HTSPPT) modules with XRAM methodology was designed and simulated in preliminary studies. It recycled the leakage flux energy and reduced the voltage across the opening switch with a capacitor in primary. However, the SPPS with XRAM methodology has two problems. The first one is that it can provide high pulse amplitude, but cannot provide enough width. The other one is that the ratio of the maximum capacitive energy over the total inductive energy is relatively large, which cuts down the overall system energy density. This paper proposes a modified topology of SPPS with capacitor reuse methodology. Multiple HTSPPT modules are divided into several groups. Each group shares the same capacitor. The procedure of the modified SPPS is presented in detail. A 270-kJ SPPS with capacitor reuse methodology is designed and simulated to illustrate the modified topology. With the load parameters of a small railgun, the peak value of the load current is 207.15 kA and the pulse half-height width is 5.56 ms, the ratio of the maximum capacitive energy over the total inductive energy is 11%. The slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid (STRETCH) meat grinder circuit is a widely used topology in inductive pulse power supply. Therefore, it is important to understand the relationship between the STRETCH meat grinder performances and the inductor parameters when improving the system performance and designing the inductor. From the perspective of inductor designing, this paper uses four indicators to present the STRETCH meat grinder performances, i.e., the charging current, the current amplification, the inductor energy density, and the discharge efficiency, and uses two indicators to present the inductor parameters, i.e., the total inductance and the ratio of the inductance L1 to L2 . First, the meanings of the indicators are explained or defined. Second, simulations and experiments are carried out, respectively, to analyze the trends of the four performance indicators along with the changes of two parameters indicators. Finally, both simulation and experiment results show that the increase of the total inductance leads to the decrease of the charging current and the discharge efficiency; moreover, the increase of the ratio of the inductor L1 to L2 leads to the increase of the current amplification and the discharge efficiency, but causes the decrease of the inductor energy density. Paralleled pulse-forming units (PFUs) with different triggering delays might be a paramagnetic way for generating flat-topped current wave for electromagnetic launch. Many researchers have reported that multiple capacitive storage PFUs were implemented such current waves in laboratories. However, due to its low energy density, the applications of the capacitive pulsed-power supplies are limited. Since the inductor has advantages in energy density, the inductor pulsed-power supply becomes one of the hottest topics recently. The slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid meat grinder with inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices proposed by Tsinghua University has demonstrated its advantage and applicability recently. Using this kind of topology, this paper proposes the design of an inductive storage PFU with a stored energy of 100-kJ. The maximum load current reaches to 50 kA and its pulsewidth is at least 5 ms. The optimized inductive storage PFU shows superiority in contrast to the capacitive storage PFU with the same energy. Optimal design and selection of arm inductances have been as a challenging subject in the field of modular multilevel converter (MMC). The average steady-state model is generally used as the analytical circuit model that neglects the switching frequency and harmonic values. Also, most of the researchers neglect the saturation effect of inductor core to simplify the analytical model. Contrary to the transformers, choosing the maximum flux density of inductance core is a sensitive issue, in order to design and minimize the inductors. Increasing the flux density reduces the inductor size, but getting close to the saturation region might alter the performance of the converter. This paper presents a systematic optimization approach to minimize high-power MMCs with saturable arm inductance considering technical, thermal, and manufacturing constraints. An accurate steady-state analytical model of MMC converter has been proposed and verified. A combination of converter circuit model and inductance electromagnetic model is employed to find the optimal arm inductances and capacitor values. The effect of nonideal inductance core on converter outputs has been investigated. A dimensioning model of inductor consisting of electromagnetic and thermal models is presented. To compute the optimal inductor size, a novel hybrid optimization loop is proposed including the analytical model of the converter and the inductor in which circuit, electromagnetic, and thermal properties are taken into consideration. In order to increase the accuracy of the dimensioning model, an internal verification loop is employed to verify and correct the analytical model using finite-element analysis. The proposed optimization loop aims to find the minimum inductor size considering technical and manufacturing constraints. The major strengths of inductors in energy density and power density make an inductive pulsed power supply (IPPS) a promising option for pulsed power supplies in an electromagnetic launch system. Among the circuits for an IPPS, the capacitor-aided meat grinder circuits constitute an important branch. An analytical method for the working processes of these circuits is proposed in this paper. The core of this method is the decoupling of a high-order circuit into the superposition of a resistor–inductor first-order equivalent subcircuit and a resistor–inductor–capacitor second-order equivalent subcircuit. The validity and accuracy of this method have been verified through comparison with a numerical simulation. The results show that this method possesses both satisfactory accuracy and excellent computational speed. With the same circuit parameters and time step, the time cost of this method is three orders of magnitudes lower than the time cost of a numerical simulation. The dual representation of MARX (XRAM) pulse current generator with magnetic flux compression effect is a novel circuit for current multiplication, which has the advantages of both meat grinder and XRAM that are basic circuit topologies. It contributes to the multiplication of current in two aspects: first, increasing current by magnetic flux compression and second, the current can be increased by paralleled inductors. Compared with the standard XRAM topology, the proposed circuit topology can realize a larger factor of current multiplication more easily, and is better than the standard slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid meat grinder circuit topology in aspects of scalability and modularity. Meanwhile, its energy density is increased significantly, which is advantageous to the needs of actual electromagnetic launch. Great interest has been devoted to the study of nonlinear transmission lines (NLTLs) for radio-frequency generation. The two better known configurations of NLTLs are a dispersive line consisting of sections with nonlinear components and a continuous nondispersive line called gyromagnetic line. The goal of this paper is to study the gyromagnetic line through the effects of changing the NLTL parameters. This is done based on an analytical model supported by SPICE circuit simulations and validation of results with numerical analysis, focusing on the pulse rise time compression. Different models are studied by comparing simulations with corresponding results found in the literature. The superconducting inductive pulsed-power supply (IPPS) is considered to have broad application prospects in the field of electromagnetic launch because of its low electrical loss. In order to obtain a higher efficiency in continuous electromagnetic launch, a repetitive IPPS circuit topology based on a high-temperature superconducting pulse power transformer (HTSPPT) has been proposed in our previous studies. It can recover most of the remaining energy for generating continuous current pulses by using a bridge-type capacitive switching circuit. As a follow-up work, this paper presents a multimodule repetitive superconducting IPPS model for a railgun system. This multimodule model consists of 24 HTSPPT modules connected to an XRAM-like circuit topology. In order to verify the feasibility of the repetitive superconducting IPPS and study its driving characteristics, the dynamic launching process of a simple 4-m-long railgun system was simulated. The influence of the capacitance in the bridge-type capacitive switching circuit on the main performance of the system, such as the maximum output current, the maximum primary voltage, the launch efficiency, the maximum capacitive energy ratio, and the remaining energy recovery ratio, was analyzed. The simulation results show that the repetitive superconducting IPPS is suitable for driving the simple railgun. In addition, it also concluded that the system performances conflict with each other and the optimal capacitance value for each HTSPPT module should be determined by the tradeoff of system performances. This paper describes a compact high storage density inductive–capacitive storage module. The module is based on high-power opening switches using inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices commutation principle and a high storage density Brooks inductor. These opening switches, being able to switch-OFF pulse currents up to 14.5 kA by the counter-current subcircuit, make use of the general property of a standard high-power thyristors impedance transition from closing state to blocking state. The experimental results show that with the primary capacitor and counter-current commutation subcircuit charged voltage 3 and 2.5 kV, respectively, the charged current of the Brooks-type inductor is about 14.5 kA, with a charged time of about 4.5 ms. The output peak current of the inductive storage module is about 21 kA. The total stored energy is about 54.9 kJ while the energy density of the inductor is approximately 6.69 MJ/ \textm^3 , which is not including the primary storage and commutation unit. By applying the principle of inverse current commutation with semiconductor (ICCOS) devices in a slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid (STRETCH) meat grinder system, a novel circuit topology called STRETCH meat grinder with ICCOS was proposed by the Tsinghua University in 2013. It can not only raise the amplitude of the opening current, but also reduce the cost of the STRETCH meat grinder circuit obviously by replacing the integrated gate-commutated thyristor (IGCT) with thyristor. This paper discusses the overall design, system implementation, and testing results of a STRETCH meat grinder with ICCOS system with roughly 1-kJ inductive energy. The load is a spiral coil with 1.4- \textm\Omega resistance and 1.4- \mu \textH inductance. With closed-loop control strategy, the system detects the charging current of the inductors. When it reaches the designated value, the triggering signal for ICCOS is delivered and after the predefined delay time, the triggering signal for discharging the voltage on the pulse-forming capacitor is delivered. The current of the inductors and the load are measured by Rogowski coils. The opening current is 1 kA and the maximum load current is close to 4 kA. All the voltages on the switches are lower than 1 kV. The experimental results are consistent with the simulated ones, which verified the correctness of the theoretical analysis and proved the applicability of the STRETCH meat grinder with ICCOS for larger energy level. Structural parameters directly affect the energy density and the total resistance of the inductors used in inductive pulse power supply (IPPS). This paper elaborates the relationship between the structural parameters and electrical performances of the inductors used in IPPS and set up the inductors for the experiment in slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid meat grinder circuit using air-core flat spirals of strip coil. Then we compile a program that can obtain the structural parameters of the inductors that have the highest energy density under the condition of given charging and discharging currents as well as inductances in the primary and secondary sides. The calculation results of the program are analyzed and verified by the measured values of the real inductors. At the end, on the condition of a constant current density, we put forward a rule that along with the increase in the system energy, the energy density of the IPPS became higher and the resistance of the inductors became lower. Inductive pulsed power supply (IPPS), especially superconducting pulsed power supply (PS), has been the focus of research in recent years due to its high energy density and low power requirement for the input PS. Quite a lot of fantastic work regarding two or multiple IPPS modules has been presented. But they disregard the mutual inductance between modules. This paper establishes a double-module IPPS based on two high-temperature superconducting pulsed power transformers and takes the mutual inductance between modules into consideration. The influence of the mutual inductance between two modules on three discharge modes of the system is researched. Simulations and experiments on synchronous discharge, time-delay discharge, and asynchronous discharge are carried out, respectively. The results demonstrate that taking the mutual inductance into consideration, the amplitude and the pulsewidth of the output currents are both improved a lot, especially the obtainable energy of load is improved by nearly half. For time-delay discharge, the mutual inductance makes the delay time slightly increase. However, for asynchronous discharge, the mutual inductance increases the positive maximum value of the primary current of the second module. It may exceed the critical current and lead to quench. Consequently, the mutual inductance between modules has positive impacts on synchronous discharge and time-delay discharge of the IPPS system while it brings both advantages and disadvantages to asynchronous discharge. In this paper, circuit simulation was chosen as the main methodology to analyze the characteristics of an electromagnetic (EM) rail launcher (or EM railgun) system, and a complex simulation model was proposed, which was not merely built on the static electrical parameters. Moreover, practical physical processes contributed to the system have also been taken into consideration and expressed as electrical parameters. Thus, the description of a relatively complex system could be realized by a comparatively simple manner, and the simulation result is more accurate and reliable compared with the traditional circuit simulation ones with the static electrical parameters. A circuit simulation model of an EM launch system based on PSpice software was built, in consideration of multifactor effects, such as current skin effect, contact pressure, and contact resistance on the contact surface of the armature and the barrel, velocity skin effect, friction drag, and temperature coefficient of electrical resistivity. Simulations were made based on the proposed model as well as the traditional one. Inductive pulse power supplies are of interest because their energy densities are one order of magnitude higher than those of capacitive power supplies, based on the same power-output capacity. The Institute of Advanced Technology puts forward an inductive pulse power topology called the slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid (STRETCH) meat grinder. In this topology, an active switch is used to cut off the charging current. Limited by the current turning off ability of integrated gated commuted thyristor, it may encounter difficulties in extending to higher-energy systems. Other than that, the cost of the system is very high. In this paper, the principle of the STRETCH meat grinder is presented. Then, the STRETCH meat grinder with inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices (ICCOS), which is proposed by the Institute of Saint Louis, is presented. The process of ICCOS in the STRETCH meat grinder is illustrated in detail. Finally, simulations are made based on Simplorer 8 to explain how ICCOS works clearly. A preliminary discussion of how to design ICCOS is also presented. We conclude that the STRETCH meat grinder with ICCOS removes the limitations of the original one and has potential applications for high-energy systems in future and can cut down the cost greatly. In this paper, we investigate a water treatment method that sprays waste water droplets into a pulsed discharge space. For this method, it is important to apply pulsed voltages with a short pulse width and a fast rise to the electrode to realize high energy efficiency. An inductive energy storage (IES) circuit using a semiconductor opening switch (SOS) outputs pulsed voltages similar to the above-mentioned voltage. We report the characteristics of the water treatment using the IES circuit. The capacitance and inductance in the IES circuit are varied. An increase in the inductance in the secondary circuit of the pulse transformer, results in the formation of pulsed voltages with a longer pulse width; thus, the ratio of the thermal loss to the discharge energy becomes high. However, the energy transfer efficiency improves. Additionally, we vary the maximum current of the SOS, keeping the pulse width constant, by adjusting the capacitance and the inductance. As a result, when the current in the SOS increased, pulsed voltages with a higher peak and a shaper rise are obtained. Further, the pulse width of the voltage and the energy transfer efficiency are not affected by the current in the SOS. Hence, the energy density of the discharge is higher. The increase in the secondary inductance and the forward current increased the energy efficiency of the water treatment system owing to the increase in the energy transfer efficiency and the discharge energy density. The air-core flat spirals of strip coil structure is a typical type of the tightly coupled energy storage inductors used in inductive pulsed power supplies. This paper improves the speed and the parameter scope of the inductance calculation method for these inductors. Specifically, the analytical expressions using the structural parameters to represent the performance parameters, e.g., the inductance, the resistance, and the current conducting capability of the primary inductor and the secondary inductor L1 , L2 , R1 , R2 , I\mathrm{ 1limit} , I\mathrm{ 2limit} , the total volume V\mathrm{ tot} , and the energy density \omega , are given. The validity of this method is confirmed by practical measurements of a set of constructed inductors with 2.67-mH total inductance. The absolute error is within 0.02 mH. On the basis of this method, parameter optimization on energy density is conducted for the 70-kJ energy level module. To improve the efficiency of inductive pulsed power supplies (IPPS), liquid-nitrogen (LN2) cooling has been recommended to limit the energy loss. However, the low-temperature environment not only significantly reduces the resistances of the inductors but also slightly reduces their inductances. To fully evaluate the overall impacts of low temperature, eight performance indices are proposed, i.e., charging time T0 , efficiency \eta , primary/secondary current multiplication ratio m_{1}/m_{2} , ratio between the maximum capacitive energy and the total inductive energy \eta _{C} , maximum voltage across the main switch U\mathrm{ Sopm} , muzzle velocity proportional term \propto {v} , and total energy loss caused by the inductors’ internal resistance ER . Using the typical slow transfer of energy through the capacitive hybrid circuit topology as an example, a semianalytical parametric analysis method is proposed to analyze this multiparameter problem. The results indicate that whether indices m1 , \eta C , and U\mathrm{ Sopm} will be improved or worsened after adopting low temperature depends on specific system parameters, while the other five indices will be improved for any inductor and system parameter. Furthermore, by using a theory of equivalent inductance, the results are explained qualitatively. A test platform that introduces the LN2 cooling is established for verification, and the results agree well with the theory. Inductive electrical components made of massive conductors are usually adopted in the high-power circuit. Since they are not the types of filaments, the diffusion of the electromagnetic fields inside the conductors plays an important role in the transient discharge. Though the behavior of the circuit can be described reasonably using constant electrical parameters, the voltage drop in the massive conductor is not expressed accurately when constant resistance and inductance are used in the analysis of the transient discharge. To obtain a more accurate waveform of the pulsed current, we have used a comprehensive method calculating the correction voltage in the voltage drop. Once the resistive voltage drop and the magnetic flux for a step-function current are obtained either analytically or numerically, the voltage drop in the massive component for any current waveform can be calculated using the Duhamel's integration. The equations of the circuit containing massive conductors can be solved through a few iterations using the method estimating the voltage drop. As an example, the method was applied to an analysis of an RLC circuit containing a massive pulse-forming inductor. Electromagnetic responses of the inductor for a step-function current were calculated numerically with the help of a finite element method. Growing interest in battery performance and cost reduction for hybrid and electric vehicles has restimulated interest in the United States in the use of high-power batteries as a potential source of pulsed power. Recent progress in high-power-density lithium-ion batteries and high-power semiconducting switches has suggested that a battery–inductor-based pulsed power system could become a viable option to pulsed alternators for electromagnetic (EM) launchers and other pulsed loads in the megajoule range. Approximate system sizing and a parametric study are presented, showing the effects of battery and inductor parameters on the overall efficiency and system size for a conceptual 2-MJ muzzle energy EM launch system utilizing the STRETCH circuit topology. Inductive pulsed power supply (IPPS) is considered as an alternative to capacitive one due to its higher energy density. An opening switch is necessary for an IPPS because it interrupts the charging circuit and transfers the stored energy to the load. A major technical challenge inherent to the IPPS is the overvoltage across the opening switch, i.e., the open-circuit voltage. Moreover, obtaining a larger current, especially with a steeper rising edge, will further increase the open-circuit voltage. A novel IPPS based on a three-winding pulse transformer, consisting of two primary windings and one secondary winding, is presented in this article to improve the output current and reduce the open-circuit voltage. The two primary inductors adopted a parallel switching scheme, namely, series charging and parallel discharging. Its working principle is analyzed first in detail. As a new type of pulsed power supply, an air-core pulsed alternator concentrates all the functions of energy storage, energy conversion, and power conditioning in one machine. It is also easy to condition the output voltage and current waveforms. These advantages make it a promising compact power supply system for the electrothermal-chemical gun (ETCG). However, the use of multiphase air-core pulsed alternators as the power supply of ETCGs may give rise to problems such as generating high voltage trigger pulse and providing proper voltage and current waveforms. According to the special requirements of ETCGs, a novel circuit topology and a flexible waveform conditioning strategy of an air-core pulsed alternator were proposed. In the initial stage of the discharge process, the two-phase armature windings are connected in series to generate a high voltage pulse to ignite the capillary. The series mode does not need a high-voltage capacitor and its charger to ignite the capillary, which makes the whole system more compact. After the capillary is ignited, the two-phase armature windings are connected in parallel. Adding conditioning inductors and controlling the trigger angles can make the voltage and current waveforms more flexible. The mathematical model of the two-phase air-core pulsed alternator was established to obtain the basic relationship of the variables. Based on the mathematical model and the circuit topology, the performances of the ETCG powered by the alternator using the flexible waveform conditioning strategy were analyzed. The results indicate that with the new strategy of the air-core pulsed alternator it is feasible to provide more flexibility in pulse conditioning than with the conventional strategy.
