This paper presents the effect of stray capacitances in bipolar (negative and/or positive) pulses generated by the two different topologies of the solid-state Marx modulators. According to the analysis, the stray capacitances influence the energy transfer from the Marx modulator capacitors to the load affecting the bipolar (negative and/or positive) pulse rise time. This paper deals with the structure design to reduce the influence of the stray capacitance and to improve the pulse rise time of these bipolar solid-state Marx modulators. A four-stage laboratory prototype of the two topologies has been assembled using 1200-V insulated gate bipolar transistors and diodes, operating with 1000-V dc input voltage and 1-kHz frequency, producing 4-kV bipolar pulses, with 5- \mu \texts pulse duration and 120-ns rise time, into a resistive load. This paper proposed the use of a ringer, a self-switched inductive storage system, for applications involving reluctance accelerators, a kind of electromagnetic launcher, and compatible with applications where portability is a requirement. There will be shown three different useful approximations for the analysis of the ringer, employed as a power source for a reluctance accelerator. First, it described the equations governing the que behavior of an ideal unloaded ringer, and then the equations for the ringer with an uncoupled inductive load, and ultimately a Lagrangian model for the ringer as an inductive power source for a reluctance accelerator, capable to make predictions about the currents through the circuits and the exit speed of the projectile for a given firing. This paper discusses a novel methodology to increase the voltage droop compensation range in generalized solid-state bipolar high-voltage Marx modulators with one resonant stage. To maintain the modularity characteristic of bipolar Marx modulators, the imbedding of additional resonant stages is not straightforward. Nevertheless, this paper proposes to add a second resonant stage to the already existing resonant-type voltage droop compensation stage. This second stage increases the voltage droop compensation percentage of a generalized solid-state bipolar Marx generator. The compensation of the bipolar pulse voltage droop is now achieved by adding two auxiliary synchronous compensation resonant voltages, to the output capacitive decaying voltage. Simulation and experimental results are presented for six Marx plus two resonant stages, 16% voltage droop, with 3-kV pulse amplitude, 100- $\mu \text{s}$ pulsewidth, 40-ms relaxation time, and 10-Hz pulse repetition rate. This paper presents a new capacitor bank topology for a pulsed power system to improve the efficiency of multistage synchronous induction coilgun. In the proposed method, a switch, such a gate turn-off thyristor, is inserted in parallel to a crowbar diode and load to generate an attractive force between the next stator and the armature. A mathematical model was developed, and finite-element method simulations were conducted to verify the proposed topology. The results show that the proposed method improves the energy efficiency and launch velocity. Slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid (STRETCH) meat grinder circuit, which was proposed by the Institute for Advanced Technology, added a capacitor into the traditional meat grinder circuit. Even though its energy density is slightly less than the corresponding pure inductance system, it can reduce the voltage across the opening switch and maintain the high multiplication factor of the opening current. The performance of the STRETCH meat grinder circuit depends on multiple parameters. The inductance ratio ( n=L1 / L2) and the capacitance (C) are the two vital factors, which have a crucial influence on the system performance, such as the voltage over the opening switch ( V_{\rm Sopm}) , the current multiplication factor ( m$ ), and the ratio of the maximum capacitive energy over the total inductive energy ( $\eta )$ . Thorough studies have been carried out in this paper on the relationship between the above two factors and the three performance criteria. This paper also discusses and analyzes the chosen of the key parameters ( $n$ and $C$ ) for a single-stage STRETCH meat grinder with 2-mH total inductance, which is made up of two serial coils with 0.95 coupling factor. The opening current of the main switch is 1 kA, which constitutes a 1-kJ inductive pulsed-power supply. It fully takes the advantage of the STRETCH meat grinder topology, intensifies the study of the inductive pulsed-power supply with higher energies, and is easy to be utilized for practical application. In this paper, a compact circuit topology is presented for pulsed power generation with a semiconductor opening switch (SOS). Such circuits require the generation of a fast forward current through the diode, followed by a reverse current that activates the recovery process. In general, magnetic switches are used to switch the diode current from forward to reverse. Therefore, adjustment of the output voltage of an SOS pulser is difficult. This paper introduces a circuit that allows an adjustable output voltage of the pulser. A solution is realized with a premagnetizing circuit on the primary winding of a pulse transformer (PT), so that a third winding is not needed. This paper describes a high-frequency pulsed-power generator for various industrial applications such as water treatment, food and medical apparatus for sterilization, or polluted gas treatment. The system is made of silicon-controlled rectifier as a main trigger switch, capacitors, two-stage magnetic pulse compression stages, and a linear transformer to generate a maximum of 120-kV, 5-kA pulse. The parameters obtained through the development are: output voltage: 120 kV (maximum), pulse repetition ration: 300 pulse per second, pulsewidth: 0.25~\mu \texts , and mean power: 30 kW. Superconducting pulsed-power supply (SPPS) provides an efficient method for both high-density inductive energy storage and high current pulse generation. An SPPS consisting of eight high-temperature superconducting pulsed-power transformer (HTSPPT) modules with XRAM methodology was designed and simulated in preliminary studies. It recycled the leakage flux energy and reduced the voltage across the opening switch with a capacitor in primary. However, the SPPS with XRAM methodology has two problems. The first one is that it can provide high pulse amplitude, but cannot provide enough width. The other one is that the ratio of the maximum capacitive energy over the total inductive energy is relatively large, which cuts down the overall system energy density. This paper proposes a modified topology of SPPS with capacitor reuse methodology. Multiple HTSPPT modules are divided into several groups. Each group shares the same capacitor. The procedure of the modified SPPS is presented in detail. A 270-kJ SPPS with capacitor reuse methodology is designed and simulated to illustrate the modified topology. With the load parameters of a small railgun, the peak value of the load current is 207.15 kA and the pulse half-height width is 5.56 ms, the ratio of the maximum capacitive energy over the total inductive energy is 11%. Amorphous magnetic core has been widely used in pulsed power technology with applications including plasma science research, high-power microwave generation, and material surface treatment. For different applications, dynamic properties of the magnetic core will vary with stimulated magnetic field which determines by magnetization time and waveform of the driving voltage. In this paper, toroidal amorphous magnetic core ($\Phi ~540$ – $740\times25$ mm) was investigated theoretically, numerically, and experimentally. Specifically, the circuit is analyzed. A high-voltage test stand, which can generate different driving voltages with same components, was designed and developed in our laboratory. Dynamic properties, including magnetic induction change, coercive force and losses, were studied under three different typical waveforms with the same magnetic flux. Driving voltages of the pulses were 12, 12, and 6 kV and the magnetization rates were 0.6, 1.2, and 0.6 T/ $\mu \text{s}$ , respectively. Recently, inductive energy storage systems have attracted interests due to high energy densities. The high-temperature superconducting pulsed-power supply (HTSPPS) is one inductive PS topology for electromagnetic launching system. The topology can achieve a high amplitude load current and cut down the electrical losses due to the zero resistance characteristic of superconducting inductors. However, in this topology, the integrated gated commuted thyristor is used as a switch and cannot withstand high current, which limits the expansion of the system. Besides, it has significant current amplification ability as a single unit, but one module cannot provide sufficient amplitude and appropriate pulsewidth for the load current of the electromagnetic launching. In this paper, by applying the principle of inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices (ICCOS) in the HTSPPS, a novel circuit topology called HTSPPS with ICCOS is presented. This topology is analyzed and the multiple modules system is established. Simulation results show that the HTSPPS with ICCOS exceeds the current limitations of the original one and ensures the reliable cutting off of the main switch. It has potential applications in the future of high-energy systems while reducing the cost greatly. By asynchronous cooperative triggered discharge of the multiple HTSPPS with ICCOS modules in parallel, the appropriate amplitude and flat shape current of the load can be achieved through the careful design of the trigger time. The series configuration of fast semiconductor switches seems to be the key component in the high-voltage and fast rising time pulse generation. In this approach, two important issues must be considered. The first is to provide a safe operating condition for the switches in transient intervals. The second is to design a gate drive system with the capability of driving a large number of discrete devices simultaneously. The aim of this paper is to obviate these two requirements. First, different factors affecting the unbalanced voltage sharing between the series switches are discussed. In this investigation, the switch-to-ground parasitic capacitance effect has been recognized as the major effect on the unbalanced voltage sharing in the transient interval. Two schemes for abating this effect are proposed. To solve the unbalanced voltage distribution, the structure with a snubber circuit in the clamp mode operation is suggested. This scheme can be used for any number of switches without destructively affecting their behavior. In addition, the output pulse with a fast rising time could be obtained by the proposed gate drive system. In order to evaluate the operation of the proposed structure, a stacked switch with the voltage capability of 36 kV is tested experimentally. The characteristics of the obtained pulse are the fast rising time (69.5 ns) with the dV/dt of 460 kv/ \mu \texts and the wide range of the pulsewidth adjusting to 0.5–15 \mu \texts . The parallel operation of array microhollow cathode (MHC) discharges is studied to generate high density of electrons owing to its multichannel MHC discharges. To ignite all the holes synchronously in one pulse, a pretrigger device is introduced, which is composed of three layers (two electrode layers and a dielectric layer). With the pretrigger process, some initial electrons can be injected into the holes, which makes array MHCs easier to ignite and improves the behavior of parallel operation. In this paper, the array MHC discharges with pretrigger in one pulse mode are presented and the influence on the parallel operation of the pretrigger process is studied. This paper shows how to use modular Marx multilevel converter diode ( \textM^3 CD) modules to apply unipolar or bipolar high-voltage pulses for pulsed power applications. The \textM^3 CD cells allow the assembly of a multilevel converter without needing complex algorithms and parameter measurement to balance the capacitor voltages. This paper also explains how to supply all the modular cells in order to ensure galvanic isolation between control circuits and power circuits. Our understanding of warm dense matter (WDM) properties will help to unravel the formation and evolution of giant planet, including gaseous giants or mega-Earths. However, the production of WDM in the laboratory is limited to samples on the order of tens of micrometers. This raises many challenges to measure the properties of WDM using standard diagnostics. In this paper, we propose a new method to produce WDM samples using pulsed-power machines. We numerically demonstrate that the early expansion phase of the sample, usually encountered in pulsed-power systems, can be virtually eliminated using a current switching scheme. To avoid mixing the plasma and WDM states, the present strategy uses a gas-puff $Z$ -pinch as a closing plasma switch. During the first part of the discharge, most of the current flows inside a gas-puff $Z$ -pinch, preventing the heating of the sample. During this phase, the gas $Z$ -pinch radially converges toward the sample. When the $Z$ -pinch finally reaches the sample, all the $Z$ -pinch current switches to the sample and rapidly heats it. The strong azimuthal field generated by the $Z$ -pinch prevents the expansion of the sample. If the initial gas pressure is carefully chosen, the sample reaches a quasi-homogeneous WDM state. The STRETCH meat grinder is one typical inductive pulsed-power supply topology for electromagnetic launch system. It has remarkable current amplification ability as a single unit, but one module cannot provide enough amplitude and width for the load current of the railgun launching. This paper discusses the effects of different triggering delays on the load current with two STRETCH meat grinder modules. To reduce the magnetic field coupling between the two modules, the two main switches are opened simultaneously. To make the load current waveform with no notch, the thyristor of the first module is triggered when its pulse-forming capacitor is fully reversely charged. For the thyristor of the second module, we consider several time points of triggering delay. Because of the practical constraint for the maximum rail current that ensures no rail erosion, the rectangular waveform is the most appropriate load current waveform. Therefore, the comparing criterion can be defined as the ratio of the load current waveform area and its maximum rectangle area at different current levels. Higher ratio means that the current is more like a rectangular wave and is better accordingly. Based on the above criterion and extensive simulation research, we found that the best delay time is the moment when the capacitor is reversely charging the inductor completely. One of the critical components of high energy density pulsed power systems used to generate short high-voltage and high-power impulses is gas-filled plasma closing switch (PCS). In recent years, significant research efforts have been aimed at finding environmentally friendly gases which can be used in the PCSs, and several gases including dry air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon, and their mixtures have been considered as potentially suitable working fluids in such switches. However, the lack of knowledge of the breakdown characteristics of complex switching topologies filled with these gases limits their practical applications. Therefore, further investigation of the breakdown performance of PCSs is required, in order to establish their applicability for practical use in high-voltage pulsed power systems. This paper reports on the investigation of the breakdown characteristics of a triggered PCS topology with corona discharge electrodes. The self-breakdown voltage of the switch, variation in the self-breakdown voltage, time to breakdown, and jitter have been obtained for the switch filled with “zero grade” air, N2, CO2, and an Ar/O2 mixture up to a pressure of 10 bar (abs). A 200 kJ pulsed power system (PPS) has been built up to drive pulsed plasma devices. This PPS consists of two 100 kJ capacitor bank modules, each comprising of five capacitors of each 178~\mu \textF , a discharge switch, and a pulse-shaping unit. When both the banks are charged simultaneously to −15 kV using full charging technique, it delivers a peak current 100 kA at the load (damping resistor and pulse-shaping inductor). Later on, a plasma system will be attached at the load which will also have an inductive and resistive effect. A fiber-optic triggering unit controls both the modules and there exists a flexibility of sometimes operating a single module only, besides there are provisions for further up gradation of the PPS to a targeted 600 kJ. Prior to this development, PSpice simulation was carried out to estimate the parameters of the circuit components to achieve the required wave pulse with precision. Using these parameters, a design of the PPS was made keeping into account about the critical issues involved and the ratings of the components, some of which were fabricated in house. This paper addresses inductive pulsed power generators and their major components. Different inductive storage designs, such as solenoids, toroids, and force-balanced coils, are briefly presented and their advantages and disadvantages are mentioned. Special emphasis is given to inductive circuit topologies, which have been investigated in railgun research, such as the XRAM, meat grinder, or pulse transformer topologies. One section deals with opening switches as they are indispensable for inductive storages and another one deals briefly with superconducting magnetic energy storage for pulsed power applications. This paper describes the design, implementation, and comparison of high-voltage capacitor chargers for a solid-state pulsed power modulator (SSPPM). The three different converter topologies are a series resonant converter operating at a discontinuous conduction mode with switching frequency control (SRC_DCM_SFC), a series resonant converter operating at a continuous conduction mode with phase shifted pulse width modulation control (SRC_CCM_PSPWMC), and a series–parallel resonant converter operating at the CCM with SFC (SPRC_CCM_SFC). On the basis of these converter topologies, 10\-kW\rm{average} high-voltage capacitor chargers are designed for the three types of SSPPMs, which have the following maximum output specifications: 1) SRC_DCM_SFC: 60 kV, 300 A, 3 kpps, and 50 \mus; 2) SRC_CCM_PSPWMC: 10 kV, 50 A, 50 kpps, and 10 \mus; and 3) SPRC_CCM_SFC: 40 kV, 150 A, 7 kpps, and 10 \mus. Although the pulse output specifications are different, it is worth comparing the resonant inverter topologies and the control methods from the viewpoint of the losses, control characteristics, and merits and demerits of the high-voltage capacitor chargers. From the analysis and investigation of the three resonant inverters, the design procedure, including the determination of the resonant tank parameters, is provided, which considers the design of the high-voltage capacitor charger. PSPICE simulation is used to elucidate the effects of the resonant tank structure and its parameters, and the resonant current waveform and losses of the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor are compared. Finally, experiments for each charger are performed under various load conditions, and the comparison results of the three capacitor chargers, including the conduction and switching losses, control characteristics, and overall efficiency, are discussed in this paper. Starting from the updated requirements of an advanced laser system, a switch–trigger system for a 2.0-MJ pulsed power supply (PPS) module is developed. This paper discusses the design, construction, and testing of this switch–trigger system. The two-electrode construction for the spark gap switch is selected because of its superiority in terms of long working life, high peak currents, and fast rise time of currents. The trigger generator based on resonant charging of a pulse transformer is constructed. A magnetic isolator and a pressure controller are the auxiliary equipment of this system. In the section based on mathematical principles, the equations of the lifetime and stability of this spark gap switch with graphite electrodes are given. These expressions can be regarded as the design basis of the same type of switch. As for the trigger generator, the analysis states that an appropriate ratio can be obtained when using the resonant charging based on a core-type pulse transformer. The charging time is dependent on the leakage inductance and the capacitance of the primary and secondary capacitors. Extensive testing proves the operating parameters of the switches and the trigger generator. The measured discharge current waveform of the 2.0-MJ capacitive PPS module is demonstrated to be over 500 kA peak current and 500 \mus pulse width. The life test proves that the switch–trigger system can support more than 200 kC transfer charge. By replacing the electrodes, the lifetime of this switch can be extended furthrer. Normally, a three-electrode spark–gap switch is controlled by the application of an external trigger impulse. In this paper, a novel self-breakdown sharpening switch based on the three-electrode spark–gap switch is proposed. However, in this paper, the trigger electrode is connected to ground through a resistor, with the prespark between the trigger and the main electrodes providing the electrons and ions that initiate conduction of the main gap. A prototype sharpening switch with a breakdown voltage of 116.0 kV \pm 1.0 kV and a breakdown time of 3.396\ \mu\s\pm 0.036 \ \mu\s is described. When compared with a conventional two-electrode spark–gap sharpening switch, the novel sharpening switch has both a more stable breakdown voltage and lower jitter, and the dc breakdown and impulse breakdown characteristics of the two types of switches are presented and compared. When the impedance of the resistor connected to the trigger electrode is high, it is demonstrated that both the value of this resistor and also the type of load have little effect on the characteristics of the novel switch. However, the breakdown voltage of the novel sharpening switch was found to be sensitive to the rise time of the input pulse from the trigger generator. This paper details the experimental evaluation and simulation of a 4-kV n-type gate turn-OFF thyristor (GTO) designed for pulsed power applications. The primary criteria of evaluation are rate of current rise ( dI/dt ), turn-ON delay time ( T_{D}) , and resistance of the device during turn-ON transients [ R_{\mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON}}(t)$ ]. The device under test (DuT) is an n-type asymmetric-blocking GTO manufactured by Silicon Power (Part No. 14N40A10) with a rated dc blocking voltage of 4 kV. A test circuit was specifically designed to minimize stray inductance in order to capitalize on the dI/dt$ capabilities of the DuT. Experimental data collected from resistance measurements are used to develop a single-switch approximate model for use in simulation. The results of dI/dt$ experiments provide a profile of DuT dI/dt$ operation beyond rated values; specifically dI/dt were readily achieved. Many approaches exist for energy storage and delivery to the load, including high-power relativistic applications. One of the best solutions for the driver of high-power relativistic applications is the Marx generator. This paper describes the design, fabrication, and experimental validation of a Marx generator consisting of capacitors, spark-gap switches, and resistors. It is designed as an eight-stage Marx circuit to reach an output voltage level as low as −500 kV, and it is directly connected to the Blumlein pulse-forming line (PFL) to achieve more than 100 ns of the full-width at half-maximum. Experiments are performed with a solution load in a manner similar to having a coaxial structure in a high vacuum with a pressure of below 0.5\, \times \, 10^-5 torr, to prevent breakdown and measure the amplitude of the negative high-voltage pulse waveform. The solution load is designed to capture the short-pulse output of the PFL with a rise time of less than 25 ns and a voltage level of approximately −500 kV. The experimental results show that the output pulse can be used as a source to generate an intense relativistic electron beam at the gun for high-power relativistic applications. High-performance trigger generators with high amplitude, fast rise time, low jitter are essential for large-scaled pulsed-power systems. Most of the trigger generators are also tiny multistage pulsed-power systems with complicated structures. In this paper, a high-performance trigger generator was proposed by combining the advantages of low-jitter semiconductor switch and high-power gas switch. An avalanche transistor Marx circuit was developed. It was used to trigger a two-stage Marx generator based on trigatron switch. The output characteristics of the Marx circuit based on avalanche transistors and the two-stage Marx generator were studied. The experimental results show that a subnanosecond jitter, nanosecond rise time, high-voltage trigger generator can be achieved by triggering trigatron switch with an avalanche transistor circuit. Two-electrode graphite spark gap switch (TGSGS) is used as the main discharge switch and triggered by a reliable trigger generator in pulsed power conditioning system (PPCS). There would be 108 energy modules in PPCS working at the same time. The reliable operating and jitters of the trigger generators will have impact on the PPCSs performance. In this paper, the working modes of the TGSGS are discussed and the performance of trigger generators in PPCS is tested and presented. A protection strategy of the trigger generator in PPCS is introduced, and effect of the blocking capacitor on the trigger pulse transmission is analyzed and tested. The protection strategy of the trigger generator based on blocking capacitor and fuse can effectively prevent the energy anti-irrigation failure when the pulse transformer core saturated. The blocking capacitor has some effect on the trigger pulse transmission, and has the larger capacitance, getting the higher peak amplitude on the cathode of the TGSGS. It is tried to discuss the working characteristics of the thyristors, and proposes a selection reference of the thyristors in this and other similar applications. A repetitive 0.6 MV, 10 GW Tesla-driven Blumlein pulsed power generator, with an overall energy efficiency in excess of 90%, has been designed, manufactured and demonstrated by the Pulsed Power Group at Loughborough University. This paper describes the application of various numerical techniques used to design a successful generator, such as filamentary modeling and electrostatic and transient circuit analysis. All the major parameters of both the Tesla transformer and the Blumlein pulse-forming line were determined, enabling accurate modeling of the overall unit to be performed. The wide-bandwidth embedded sensors used to monitor the dynamic characteristics of the overall system are also presented. Experimental results obtained during this major experimental program are compared with theoretical predictions and the way ahead toward generating faster output voltage impulses is considered. Field distortion gas switches are extensively used in pulsed power systems. Switch performance typically degrades because of electrode erosion, which directly influences the output parameters, stability, and reliability of pulsed power systems. With the same value of $pd$ , different pressure and gap lengths in gas switches can affect electrode erosion property and thus, the subsequent performance degradation, but few results have been published. In this paper, repetitive discharges have been undertaken in a three-electrode field distortion gas switch with fixed pd$ to study the influence of pressure and gap length on electrode erosion and switch performance. The morphology of electrode surface and time histories of both trigger jitter and the probability of prefire have been investigated during the whole life cycle of the gas switch. The results show that when pd$ is fixed, high pressure and a short gap make for low trigger jitter at the start of the switch life cycle but lead to more severe electrode erosion, expediting the degradation of performance in field-distortion gas switches. Utilization of power electronics converters in pulsed power applications introduced a new series of reliable, long life, and cost-effective pulse generators. However, these converters suffer from the limited power ratings of semiconductor switches, which necessitate introduction of a new family of modular topologies. This paper proposes a modular power electronics converter based on voltage multiplier as a high voltage pulsed power generator. This modular circuit is able to generate flexible high output voltage from low input voltage sources. The main characteristics of reversely switched dynistor (RSD) are infinite series, long lifetime, turning on in microseconds to nanoseconds, high-current rise rate (100 kA/\mus), and ability of passing through large current (several kiloamperes). With these advantages, RSD has a great potential of application in repetition rate pulsed power technology and the future HVdc field. To resolve the problem of residual voltage of RSD caused by insufficient precharge, which leads to nonuniform turn-on of RSD, this paper, based on the conduction mechanism of RSD devices, describes precharge circuit design requirements and establishes a second order circuit model to study the resonant triggering circuit of RSD. It is found that reducing precharge inductor can effectively increase precharge current, resulting in reducing the turn-on voltage of RSD. Finally, design for three improved circuit topologies (full-bridge, intense pulsed, and two-step triggering circuit) are presented and experiments show that these improved circuit topologies can enhance the precharge efficiency and reduce the turn-on voltage of RSD. Pulsed power technology is one of the technological foundations in high and new technology research, which has extremely broad development and application prospect. Gas switch is one of the key elements in pulsed power devices, and electrode erosion is a key restrictive factor in high-power gas switch development and application. According to the 1-D equation of heat conduction and thermal equilibrium equation near the electrode surface, this paper researches the electrode heat conduction mechanism, establishes the electrode erosion calculation model, calculates electrode erosion heat fluxes and their peak powers caused under different discharge conditions, and proceeds to calculate the depth of electrode etch pit. Calculation results indicate that arc joule heat is the main reason for electrode erosion when discharge current is not too high. In the light of different discharge parameters, that is, peak current, electric quantity, and current waveform, as well as single discharge electrode erosion experiments, the calculation formula of etch pit depth is fitted. A compact wideband antenna integrated with a pulse-forming line for transient pulse radiation is proposed in this paper. It can be used in the fields such as ultrawideband (UWB) radar, ground-penetrating radar, UWB communications, etc. This antenna is integrated with a solid-state switch and a planar Blumlein pulse-forming line. The dimension of the antenna is 300 mm \times 300 mm \times 3 mm. In the experiment, the switch was triggered by a laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm. The peak power of a single antenna was 14.45 MW when the applied voltage was 17 kV. A Gaussian doublet pulse with a duration of 1.5 ns and a peak–peak amplitude of 305.7 V/m at a distance of 2 m from the antenna along the main beam direction was recorded in the experiment. It is difficult to design a standard gate driver for optimal switching control of a static induction thyristor (SI-Thy) because of its unique internal structure and the direct commutation switching characteristic between the gate and cathode terminals during the transient turn-on and turn-off switching phases. Therefore, it is important to develop a simple and effective gate driver for achieving optimal fast turn-on and stable switching operations in an SI-Thy under hard-switching conditions. To achieve faster turn-on switching time with shorter gate delay time, impedance matching between the SI-Thy and the turn-on driving circuit component in the gate driver can be realized with additional circuit modification through this paper. To ensure higher stabilities in the turn-off switching phase, forced commutation techniques and additional auxiliary circuits in the gate driver have been devised to suppress the latchup and to eliminate potential ringing possibility. We have demonstrated that our designed and tested gate driver for realizing optimal switching characteristics of an SI-Thy is effective, particularly in the gate driving circuits for various pulsed-power switching applications. In this paper, starting from the project requirements, a 1.2-MJ pulsed power supply (PPS) module for a high-power laser system has been developed. The main circuit of this module consists of a high energy density capacitor bank, a spark gap switch, a magnetic switch, a trigger generator, and a load subsystem. Due to the superiority in the stability and service life, the two-electrode construction for the spark gap switch, high peak currents, and rise time of the currents is selected. Since a two-electrode spark gap switch has no separate trigger electrode and must be directly overvolted by the trigger generator, a small Marx generator has been designed and constructed for the advantage of the proven compactness and electrical performance. The effect of the magnetic switch represents a couple of functions. One is to block the triggering pulse produced by the Marx generator. Another is to permit the discharging current coming from the main capacitor bank. Finally, the measured discharge current waveform of the 1.2-MJ capacitive PPS module is demonstrated to be over a 300-kA peak current and a 500- \mu\s pulsewidth. With inherent strengths in energy density and power density, the inductive pulsed power supplies (IPPS) have become an attractive option for the power supplies in electromagnetic launch systems. The meat grinder circuits, including the slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid (STRETCH) meat grinder circuit, the STRETCH meat grinder with inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices circuit, and the meat grinder with self-charged capacitor and thyristors circuit, constitute one major branch among the IPPS circuits. This paper summarizes the fundamental research work and contributions of the meat grinder circuits from the perspectives of circuit improvements, performance analysis, inductor design, module collaboration, and efficiency promotion. This paper presents a power electronics converter to generate bipolar high-voltage pulses using low-voltage dc source. Converter is designed based on charging of different capacitors by a predetermined switching pattern and their discharging on the load for pulsed power applications. Low number of power electronics devices and bulky transformer elimination are main advantages of the proposed converter. According to new findings, bipolar high-voltage pulses may lead to higher efficiency in many applications, such as food sterilization industry. The superconducting inductive pulsed-power supply (SPPS) circuit consists of a high-temperature superconducting pulsed-power transformer (HTSPPT) and an auxiliary capacitor. The electrical losses and the power of the primary source can be cut down with the superconducting inductive energy storage. Although its energy density is slightly less than a purely superconducting inductive system, it can reduce the maximum voltage of the opening switch by the capacitor and achieve a high degree of current amplification factor. However, during the discharge process, the magnetic leakage flux energy stored in the primary of the HTSPPT requires the capacitor to have a certain capacity. The higher the ratio of the capacitive stored energy over the total inductive stored energy, the more the dominant position of inductive energy storage reduces. The current amplification factor ( \gamma ), the maximum voltage of the opening switch ( V_{S\max } ), and the ratio of capacitive stored energy ( \eta ) are the three main properties of the SPPS circuit, which depends on several intertwined critical parameters, such as the inductance ratio n = L2 /( L2+LL ) and the capacitance ( $C_{{\mathbf {1}}}$ ). This paper studies the influence of the critical parameters on the main circuit performance with a 1-kJ SPPS system. The detailed selection method of the critical parameters for the specific system is also discussed with a coupling coefficient of 0.95. In this paper, we present a solid state 0–120 kV microsecond pulse charger for our nanosecond pulse generator refid="ref1"/. The pulse-forming line (PFL) of our nanosecond pulse generator must be charged with microsecond pulses to prevent pre-firing of its oil spark gap. The pulse charger consists of two identical compact pulse charger modules with integrated electronics. The electronic circuits are mounted on a compact printed circuit board and consist mainly of a number of parallel connected insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) that switch a primary capacitor bank into a pulse transformer. Each pulse charger module can generate 60 kV microsecond pulses at 1 kHz repetition rate. When connected in series, they are able to deliver up to 120 kV into a 100 pF load. This 100 pF load is the PFL of our nanosecond pulse generator at its maximum length of 1 m. SPHINX is a microsecond linear transformer driver located at Atomic Energy Comission (CEA) Gramat (France), which can deliver a current pulse of 6 MA within 800 ns in a Z -pinch load. Using the concept of the dynamic load current multiplier (DLCM), which was proposed by Chuvatin, we expect to increase the load current above 6 MA, while decreasing its rise time to \sim300 ns. The DLCM developed by the CEA Gramat and International Technologies for High Pulsed Power (ITHPP) is a compact system made up of concentric electrodes (autotransformer), a dynamic flux extruder (cylindrical wire array), a vacuum convolute (eight post-hole rods), and a closing switch (compact vacuum surface switch). The latter is a key component of the system, which is used to prevent the current from flowing into the load until the inductance builds up due to the implosion of the wire array. This paper presents the design and testing of the DLCM surface switch, resulting from both electrostatic simulations and experiments on the SPHINX generator. These studies, carried out either with or without load (open circuit), were valuable for a first experimental evaluation of the DLCM scheme in a microsecond regime and provided detailed information on the surface switch behavior. In this paper, pulsed-power technology was applied to plasma printing, which is a maskless plasma patterning solution that is being developed for the fabrication process of printed electronics. A high-voltage pulse source was developed and applied to a high-speed plasma printer to improve the speed of plasma printing. Experiments on plasma printing were used to compare the performance of the pulse source with the currently used alternating-current source. From plasma experiments, an electrical plasma model was derived for the plasma printer. Different parameters were investigated, such as the plasma energy as a function of gap distance, applied voltage, and the total amount of plasma that was generated. From these experiments, a connection was made between the plasma energy and the print effectiveness to arrive at optimal parameter values for fast plasma printing. It was concluded that higher plasma energy leads to higher print effectiveness, which leads to an increase in plasma print speed by a factor of 10 when using the pulse source. In this paper, we describe a novel multiple-switch pulsed-power technology. The basic idea is that the heavy switching duty is shared by multiple switches. The multiple switches are interconnected via a transmission line transformer, in such a way that all switches can be synchronized automatically and no special external synchronization trigger circuit is required. It can produce either exponential or square pulses, with various voltage and current gains and with a high degree of freedom in choosing output impedances. The topology has been implemented on a prototype with ten spark-gap switches. Pulses with a rise time of 10 ns, a width of 55 ns, a peak power up to 810 MW, a peak voltage of 77 kV, and a peak current of 11 kA have been achieved at a repetition rate of 300 pps. The energy efficiency of the circuit is about 93%. In addition to spark gaps, any overvoltage-controlled switch can be applied in this topology. As an example, we demonstrate the synchronous switching of multiple thyristor switches for current multiplication. The investigation of a high output power, arc lamp exciplex ultraviolet (UV) source for pulsed power applications is presented. The arc lamp generates up to 550 W from XeF* exciplex radiation at 351 nm, totaling to nearly 0.15-mJ total radiated UV energy over the duration of the UV pulse. With an ellipsoidal reflector, the arc lamp produces 400 W/cm2 and up to 0.1 mJ of UV light onto a 1-cm2 area. A complete experimental investigation of the arc lamp for both XeCl* (308 nm) and XeF* (351 nm) exciplex sources operated under varying excitation and pressure conditions is reported. As an application, the arc lamp is successfully utilized as an illumination source for an intrinsically triggered, wide bandgap SiC photoconductive semiconductor switch (PCSS), where a PCSS ON-state resistance of $500~\Omega $ is achieved. A technology scheme that replaces Marx generator with Tesla transformer was put forward to improve the reliability of the pulsed power system. In order to validate the technology scheme, a Tesla transformer was designed and tested. The excitation of the primary consists of two 4- $\mu \text{F}$ polypropylene film capacitors which are separated by a three-electrode field distortion gas switch. A deionized water dielectric pulse forming line (PFL), with 13-nF equivalent capacitance, acts as the secondary capacitor. The actual transformation ratio is 9.7 approximately, and the PFL voltage is as high as 1.2 MV when two capacitors are charged to ±62 kV by the bipolar high-voltage direct current. The prefire probability of switch is described by the Weibull distribution and the working ratio of the switch is elaborately chosen so as to balance the prefire probability and the trigger jitter. For ±62 kV charge voltage and 0.2-MPa pressured air dielectric, the prefire probability of switch is only $1 \times 10^{-7}$ and the jitter of that is 5 ns. Modern pulsed power technology has its roots in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and it was driven overwhelmingly by applications in national defense carried out by several countries, especially the U.S., U.K., Russia, and China. The following decades, particularly the early 1990s, witnessed an increased interest in compact systems with pulse repetition rate that could be used in nondefense applications such as treatment of material surfaces by plasma and beam interactions, treatment of pollutants, food sterilization, medical applications, etc. This spawned a new generation of pulsed power components (solid-state switches) that led to completely solid-state modulators. This paper describes how the pulsed power technology used originally in beam sources and cathodic arcs has converged to produce power sources for plasma-based ion implantation (PBII) and related technologies. The electrode erosion is a serious problem for pulsed power switches working under high current. A rotary-arc gap switch (RAG) is the switch form that can reduce the electrode erosion through the fast rotation of the arc. A RAG with a coaxial cylindrical structure is designed in this paper, mainly composed of two electrodes and two coils. The finite-element-analysis software Ansoft is used to simulate and analyze the electromagnetic characteristics of the switch. The simulation shows that the distribution of the magnetic field generated by the coils is symmetric and is with a mirrorlike structure. The existence of the electrodes will weaken the magnetic field because of the reaction of the eddy currents. Cutting the electrodes is the way to solve the problem, and cutting the outer electrode is much more valid than cutting the inner electrode. However, the number of slots in the outer electrode does not influence much. When the RAG works, the arc will rotate fast around the inner electrode due to the action of a Lorentz force under the axial magnetic field, as is convenient to reduce the electrode erosion and prolong the life of the switch. A triggered vacuum switch (TVS) is an important component in pulsed power systems due to its quick switch, rapid dielectric recovery, small volume, convenient trigger system, simple structure, etc. A sample of field-breakdown TVS is fabricated, and its turning-on process is described in this paper. The initial plasmas play an important role in the process of TVS operation; its development includes two parts: 1) generation and 2) expansion. Based on the field breakdown principle, an electron emission model is chosen to describe the generation of initial plasmas. This paper presents a novel crowbar system of 10/350-\mu\s pulse current. The crowbar pulse current system includes a crowbar pulse current waveform forming circuit, a controlling unit, and a measuring unit. The crowbar pulse current circuit consists of a main air triggered switch, a triggered vacuum switch (TVS) which is used as the crowbar switch, and two trigger signal generators. A kind of TVS is designed and fabricated. Its triggering characteristics are tested, and experimental results show that, compared with other reported similar switches, the TVS has excellent characteristics such as wide operating voltage scope from 1.3 to 120 kV, short discharging delay time with maximum delay time at 400 ns, and its jitter at \pm10 ns. Based on the TVS, the crowbar 10/350- \mu\s pulse current circuit and its controlling circuit are designed. Two solid-state bipolar Marx modulators are analyzed and compared regarding hold-off semiconductor voltages and open-fault tolerance capability. Normal and abnormal operating conditions are considered, such as switch synchronization mismatches, failures, and open faults. Ten-stage laboratory prototypes of two bipolar Marx modulators have been assembled using 1200-V insulated gate bipolar transistors and matching diodes, to operate at 500-V dc input voltage. Outputs are 4-kV bipolar pulses, 1% duty ratio, into resistive loads, and 1-kHz frequency. Lack of synchronization and open-fault tests confirm that only topologies with redundant switches can operate without semiconductors being subjected to double hold-off voltages while presenting current paths to clear faults. This paper presents a novel technique for the voltage droop compensation of long pulses in solid-state bipolar high-voltage Marx generators. Considering the modularity of Marx generators the compensation consists in adding one extra stage to perform as a pulsewidth modulation circuit. This stage voltage is added to the output positive or negative pulses, and an output LfCf filter is included to smooth the voltage pulse waveform. A five-stage laboratory prototype of this circuit has been assembled using 1200-V Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors and diodes with 1000-V dc input voltage. The circuit was operated at 50-Hz bipolar pulse rate, giving 4-kV bipolar pulses, into a resistive load, with 100- \mu \texts pulsewidth and 9.5-ms relaxation time. To carry out cell experiments for the pulsed magnetic field treatment of tumor cells, a high dB/dt pulsed magnetic field generator based on a printed circuit board (PCB) Archimedes spiral coil and a self-breakdown air switch is developed. The magnetic field and the induced electric field around the Archimedes spiral coil are calculated. Using COMSOL Multiphysics software, the magnetic field distribution characteristics of the coil are optimally designed. Then, the performance of the generator is measured. Ultimately, the PCB Archimedean spiral coil has seven turns, and it has a diameter of 21 mm. The coil can produce the following pulse magnetic field parameters in a cell culture liquid: an amplitude of 0.92 T, a rise time of 78 ns, a pulsewidth of 1.8 \mu \text{s} , a rate of magnetic field change that reaches 1.1\times 10^{7} T/s, a maximum-induced electric field of 55.9 kV/m, a degree of electric field uniformity of 84%, and a maximum-induced current density of 1.7 \times 10^4 A/ \textm^2 .
