The modular multilevel converter (MMC), owing to the presence of a large number of submodules (SMs) and energy storing elements, requires a large footprint and initial investment. To address these issues, this paper proposes the switched modular multilevel converter (SMMC). It consists of two major elements; the chain-links (CLs), consisting of cascade connection of SMs as in MMC, and the single-pole-triple-throw (SPTT) switches, which can be realized using either the T-type or NPC-type switch strings. The SMMC works on the principle of connecting all the phase-legs in series and their respective positions are mutually interchanged. It offers a compact structure as the SMs count is reduced to 33% of MMC, which results in a much lower energy storage requirement. Furthermore, it does not have inter-phase circulating current problem and hence the CL inductors can also be avoided. The SMMC structure, operating principles, control, and modulation schemes are explained in detail. A detailed comparison of SMMC with the other major existing converters is carried out to highlight the important features of SMMC. The efficacy of SMMC is validated using PSCAD simulation studies with a 19-level grid-connected SMMC model. This paper analyzes the effects of shunt capacitors installed on the low voltage sides of 10/0.4 kV distribution transformers on the operation of these transformers. Using the results of an extensive measurement campaign, this paper compares: real and reactive power losses, secondary-side current, and primary-side apparent power before and after the installation of transformer capacitors. The following four cases of reactive power compensation are considered and discussed: adequate, conditionally adequate, and total compensation, as well as overcompensation. The presented analysis helps to identify transformer substations where the initial compensation should be changed or adjusted, in order to improve transformers’ operational performance. Voltage dependencies of real and reactive power demands of the transformer-supplied loads are taken into account, based on the previously identified load characteristics in the considered networks as well as voltage dependence of reactive power of shunt capacitors. This paper introduces an averaging control strategy of the phase-unit losses of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). The quantitative analysis of the MMC phase-unit loss distribution under unbalanced ac conditions is carried out by investigating the individual component of the MMC arm currents. It shows that the unbalanced arm currents will result in unbalanced phase-unit losses. To address this issue, this paper proposes a predictive closed-loop-control-based zero-sequence voltage injection method that results in much averaged loss distribution under unbalanced ac conditions. The essence of the new method is that it adjusts the three-phase sinusoidal references so that the unbalanced arm currents are fully utilized to average phase-unit losses. The medium-voltage grid is often planned in loops, but operated in a radial structure to allow a robust protection scheme. This allows the reconfiguration of the grid. This paper focuses on reconfiguration after a fault to re-establish the service, also referred to as self-healing. It includes the localization of faults and finds new grid configurations based on the actual status of the grid. The solving of the reconfiguration problem is nonpolynomial difficult. Finding an acceptable solution to resupply nonfaulted grid parts under tight time limits is difficult. The innovative contribution of this paper is an approach that finds new configurations as local as possible to the faulty area, evolvingly increasing the search space. New configurations are generated based on a heuristic method relying on graph theory. An aggregated fitness function is used to evaluate the solutions. The voltage ratings for dc transmission and distribution are not currently standardized because cable technology is advancing rapidly and therefore a low step-ratio dc–dc converter at multi-megawatt scale is a crucial technology for combining point-to-point dc links into multi-terminal networks. This paper presents a modular multilevel dc–dc converter configuration with only a single stack of half-bridge sub-modules (SM) and a resonant tank. The power processed through the stack is a small fraction of the throughput power if the step ratio is small ($1 - {\boldsymbol{v}_{\boldsymbol{L}}}/{\boldsymbol{v}_{\boldsymbol{H}}}$). Detailed analysis shows the required semiconductor ratings are much smaller compared to the front-to-front MMC and modular converters derived from standard dc–dc topologies. Further, the requirement for SM capacitive energy storage is also significantly less than those converters. The theoretical analysis and the operating principles have been verified by full-scale simulation examples and experiments with a down-scaled prototype. The SMs are operated with an adjustable phase shift to create a high frequency excitation across the resonant tank for further volume reduction. The SM capacitors self-balance without the need for switching pattern adjustments and the resonant operation provides soft switching for all power switches to increase efficiency. This paper presents an accurate steady-state initialization method for electromagnetic transient (EMT) models of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). The proposed method uses steady-state arm voltages and currents to initialize internal electrical variables and control systems of the converter, including capacitor voltage and gating signals of each sub-module. In addition to typical voltage source converter upper level control, MMC specific controls are also considered, including circulating current control, dc ripple control, and capacitor voltage balancing algorithm. This paper discusses the sensitivity of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to voltage sags based on mechanistic analysis and numerous tests. First, the sag sensitivity caused by different values of rated working voltage is shown through an analysis of the power supply and discrete input/output modules of PLCs. Second, a detailed sag-tolerance experimental scheme is proposed, and PLC sensitivity curves that differ from early curves are established through several experimental tests. Experiments are conducted with nine typical PLCs. The sensitivity of the power supply and discrete input modules are researched first, and then, the effect of the key characteristics of voltage sag, namely, magnitude, duration, points-on-wave of sag initiation, odd harmonics, multiple sags, and continuous sags, is tested. The uncertain area of the PLC sag tolerance is identified after intensively processing the extensive experimental data and curve fitting. A more accurate sag influence assessment for PLCs can be made with the given curves compared to the early curves. Furthermore, experiments have revealed that certain PLCs may work in an uncertain status during voltage sags. Single-phase autoreclosing (SPAR) is among the alternatives for mitigating the many harmful effects that a line-to-ground fault in a transmission line (TL) may cause. This procedure basically consists of opening the compromised phase, waiting a preset time span (dead time), and recomposing the previously isolated phase. In the vast majority of SPAR implementations, the open phase switching proceeds with no guarantee of whether the TL is still faulted. Switching the open phase into a fault might represent a more severe threat to the system than simply disconnecting the TL in the first place. Hence, in an effort to ensure higher levels of operational reliability to SPAR, the present paper offers a new methodology to check the soundness of the open phase during the dead time before its reclosing. First, the method's fundamental concepts are exposed. Second, a huge number of steady-state tests are presented, for which both the system topology and its operative condition were varied. To conclude, the SPAR is simulated in the time-domain with the most critical condition found in the steady-state analysis. A novel scheme is proposed to monitor the operation of capacitors scattered in MV distribution systems. It first codes each capacitor with a distinctive switching character by setting a unique combination of a three-phase switching order and time interval. As a result, the transient of the three-phase reactive power during capacitor switching will appear in a unique way. Then, the reactive power disturbances monitored in the substation are decoded to identify which capacitor is being switchedonandoff. A detailed decoding method is developed to realize this identification without being impacted by the switching interference of loads and other reactive power compensation devices. Moreover, the implementation of the proposed scheme in the field is elaborated, and the resultant three-phase voltage unbalance is analyzed in this paper. Compared with existing methods, this scheme only requires one power quality monitor located at the substation to monitor the operations (energizing or de-energizing) of downstream distribution capacitors without extra communication devices. On transmission lines where switching surges are not mitigated with closing resistors and/or surge arresters, high-speed reclosing on a line with trapped charge will produce high overvoltages that have been measured above 3 p.u. Careful simulations of these switching events using available electromagnetic transient (EMT) programs consistently produce significantly higher voltages than the measurements. This indicates a phenomenon present on the line that acts to reduce the switching surge magnitudes but is not typically modeled. This paper aims to identify the required simulation practices in reproducing the field measured overvoltages in EMT simulations and investigates the sensitivity of results to modeling approaches and electrical parameters. Field measurements from a switching surge test of a 230-kV line without surge mitigation have been used for model comparisons. Variations in frequency-dependent line modeling, ground resistivity, skin effect, shunt conductance, parallel lines, and source-side detail have been tested in an unsuccessful attempt to decrease the difference between the field measurements and the higher simulation overvoltages. It is demonstrated that even though the pattern of the transient voltage waveforms can be reproduced very well using frequency-dependent line models, the magnitude of the maximum overvoltage is significantly overestimated unless the effect of corona is considered. Two types of corona models are tested, and both demonstrate that corona is the primary factor that allows the simulations to correctly reproduce high peak overvoltage measurements. This paper proposes a modified bridge switch-type flux-coupling nonsuperconducting fault current limiter (BSFC-NSFCL) for suppressing the fault current and voltage sag. A flux-coupling reactor and a bidirectional bridge switch are combined to perform the functions of steady-state line current sharing and fault current suppression. The modified BSFC-NSFCL mainly utilizes the magnetic flux cancellation effect to make the limiter behave as a short circuit on the circuit during normal operation. Hence, there is almost no impact on the power system when the limiter is used. When a fault event occurs, the bridge switch turnsoffimmediately, and then, the magnetic flux cancellation effect disappears. Thus, the impedance of primary coil inserts into the circuit to restrict the fault current and voltage sag phenomena. Once the fault is removed, the bridge switch turnsonagain, and the BSFC-NSFCL recovers to the normal operation. The modified NSFCL is more cost-effective and easy to be implemented than the flux-coupling superconducting fault current limiter. Theoretical analysis for the BSFC-NSFCL has been fully developed and proven by MATLAB software. This paper presents a new concept and approach for topology control and switching in distribution systems by extending the traditional circuit switching to laterals and single-phase loads. Voltage unbalance and other key performance indicators including voltage magnitudes, line loading, and energy losses are used to characterize and demonstrate the technical value of optimizing system topology on a per-phase basis in response to feeder conditions. The near-optimal per-phase topology control is defined as a series of hierarchical optimization problems. The proposed approach is applied to IEEE 13-bus and 123-bus test systems for demonstration, which included the impact of integrating electric vehicles (EVs) in the test circuit. It is concluded that the proposed approach can be effectively leveraged to improve voltage profiles with electric vehicles, the extent of which depends on the performance of the base case without EVs. The expected abolishment of SF6-gas in medium-voltage switchgear has prompted a search for replacements for the switch types that depend on SF6 to obtain the required capability, reliability, compactness, and cost. Ablation of polymers can enhance the arc-quenching capabilities in certain electrical switch designs. Several aspects, like electric arc plasma composition, gas flow, and wall stabilization, must play together to obtain successful interruption. In this paper, open and closed switch geometries and two nozzle materials [polypropylene (PP) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)] are studied in medium-voltage interruption experiments. Fundamental differences in the arc-quenching process for PP and PTFE are shown. In the case of PTFE, the current interruption performance depends on gas flow resulting from the pressure built up under the high-current period. In the case of PP, the gas flow plays a lesser role for the arc-quenching capability as the interruption capability is large even in an open design with no forced gas flow around current zero. Current chopping happens a few tens of microseconds before voltage zero crossing; thereafter, a remnant conductance in the contact gap is observed, lasting for up to several milliseconds. This paper presents a new multilevel cascaded-type dynamic voltage restorer (MCDVR) with a fault current-limiting function. This topology can operate in two operational modes: 1) a compensation mode for voltage fluctuations and unbalances and 2) short-circuit current-limiting mode. The current-limiting function of the MCDVR is performed by activating antiparallel thyristors during the short-circuit fault, and deactivating them during normal operation. The mathematical model of the MCDVR system is also established in this paper. The control scheme design and optimal parameter selection are outlined based on the detailed theoretical analysis of the converter. The transient states of the MCDVR in the compensation mode and current-limiting mode are also analyzed. In this paper, a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) operation scheme of the modular multilevel converter adopting clamp double submodules (CDSM-MMC) during a pole-to-pole dc fault is proposed. By analyzing the current paths of a CDSM, this paper proposes three new operation states of the CDSM, which allow the CDSM to provide bipolar voltages when the arm current that flows through it is negative. Through control of the CDSMs to operate in these new states along with the blocked state, the arms of the CDSM-MMC can operate alternately in two different modes, that is, the conducting mode and blocked mode even when the dc-link voltage drops to zero. Thus, the CDSM-MMC is capable of working as a STATCOM during a dc fault. Moreover, a control strategy of the dc-fault STATCOM operation mode is designed to control the reactive power provided by the CDSM-MMC, to limit the dc fault current, and to reserve and balance the energies stored in capacitors. Simulation results conducted in PSCAD/EMTDC demonstrate the validity of the proposed STATCOM operation scheme and control strategy of the CDSM-MMC during a pole-to-pole dc fault. This paper proposes a transformerless dc–dc converter, which features a large voltage ratio, for medium-voltage dc (MVDC) applications. The proposed converter combines a boost converter with a series-parallel resonant converter which enables soft switching of the power switches and diodes. Further, the power switches and diodes of the proposed converter experience lower voltage stresses compared to the other topologies. The proposed converter is modular and, therefore, permits series and/or parallel connection of multiple units for the desired voltage and/or power ratings. This paper discusses the principles of operation, analysis, and design of the proposed converter. The model of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) determines the extent of critical circuit information that electromagnetic transient simulations can reveal. In this paper, two MMC models are proposed for efficient real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) emulation on the field-programmable-gate-arrays (FPGA). The nonlinear switch-based model employing the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) dynamic curve-fitting model considers factors affecting its transient performance so that device-level behavior such as power loss and junction temperature can be reproduced accurately in the electro-magnetic-thermal simulation of a power converter for its design evaluation. Meanwhile, regarding the MMC submodule as a transmission line stub achieves faster computation speed and enables the formation of a hybrid arm to save FPGA hardware resources. As the large network that the MMC presents is burdensome for real-time execution with a small time-step, circuit simplification based on partitioning and merging is conducted. Hardware implementation of a three-terminal high-voltage direct-current system containing an MMC-based dc–dc converter is carried out and the efficacy of proposed models is validated by comparing HIL emulation results with the offline simulation tool PSCAD/EMTDC. Ignoring the dynamic impedance characteristics of a thyristor-controlled series-capacitor-type fault current limiter (TCSC-FCL) may lead to maloperation/fail-to-trip or slow response of distance protection. To solve the above problem, the TCSC-FCL dynamic impedance analysis model was established. Taking the special operation mode of the TCSC-FCL into account, the time-varying characteristics of the TCSC-FCL during the whole process from the series compensation mode to the current-limiting mode were analyzed. Then, this paper proposed the function expression of dynamic impedance characteristics of the TCSC-FCL and put forward the distance protection setting strategy based on a dynamic offset impedance circle in order to eliminate the influence of TCSC-FCL dynamic impedance characteristics to the distance protection operation. By establishing a typical simulation model including the TCSC-FCL, the correctness of dynamic feature's analytic expression and the distance protection setting strategy is proved with extensive simulation results. This paper presents a breaker arrangement concept, the multiline breaker (MLB), for the protection of multiterminal high voltage dc (MTdc) networks. Based on the design of a hybrid breaker, the MLB is an economically attractive solution for the protection of multiple dc lines in nodal connection using a single main breaker path. By using commutation units, the MLB directs the fault current through the main breaker in a unidirectional way, irrespective of the fault location. Hence, this study presents the design requirements for the MLB, regarding both hardware and control, and evaluates its operation within a grid. For this reason, a four-terminal half-bridge multilevel modular converters-based MTdc grid in radial configuration was used and pole-to-ground dc fault conditions were investigated. The dc fault response of the grid with one MLB at the central node is compared to the respective response of the grid when one hybrid breaker is employed at each dc line. The simulations show that the MLB is feasible and that the overall MTdc grid fault response for the two protection systems is very similar. The modular multilevel converter-based unified power flow controller (MMC-UPFC) is able to operate under unbalanced grid conditions with symmetric component decoupling. However, the constraint of the voltage limit of UPFC is not considered and no protection schemes are investigated to protect the UPFC from overmodulation under unbalanced grid conditions. To solve this problem, this paper proposes the cascaded control scheme for MMC-UPFC based on voltage limit control and symmetric component decoupling to balance the ac current of the transmission line. With appropriate transformer connections for MMC-UPFC, the negative- and zero-sequence currents are suppressed by the corresponding inner current loops. Considering the voltage limit of MMC, the operating ranges of UPFC-MMC under balanced and unbalanced grid conditions are investigated in both mathematical derivation and point scanning methods. The results are depicted and analyzed in 3-D vision. Based on the analysis of operating regions, the voltage limit control is proposed to protect the MMC from overmodulation and to maximize the controllable region under unbalanced grid conditions. Finally, the final cascaded control structure is constructed. The ground return current of a high voltage direct current system will intrude the transformers adjacent to the grounding electrode in the case of monopole operation, leading to the half-cycle saturation of transformers. To mitigate the adverse effect, placing dc blocking devices (BDs) in transformer neutrals is popularly advocated. The conventional switching method of BDs may redirect the dc flow from one transformer with a BD to neighboring transformers without BDs. In this case, the dc currents through the neutrals of those transformers may possibly exceed the threshold undesirably. This problem is due to the lack of guidance for dc current distribution from the global view by means of finite BDs. Thus, this paper presents an optimization approach for the switching of BDs based on the gravitational search algorithm. A mathematical model for investigating the dc global distribution is established with the equivalent resistive network of an ac system, the location distribution of substations and grounding electrodes. Then, an optimal switching scheme to minimize the adverse impact of dc bias is presented, and the principle and the concrete implementation process are detailed. This paper presents a concise frequency-domain interharmonic model for the current-source inverter-fed (CSI-fed) variable frequency drives (VFDs). This model is in the form of a Thévenin equivalent circuit. The equivalent voltage source is determined only by the VFD operating point, while the equivalent impedance is influenced by the system impedance, the dc-link impedance, and motor parameters. This model, verified by simulations and measurements, can be used to predict the interharmonic propagation in a system supplying CSI-fed VFDs. The model also reveals the interharmonic generation characteristics of the VFDs, which will help the proper selection of mitigation options. This paper investigates the conditions for transformer winding resonances with an emphasis on oscillatory excitation voltages originating from various switching events in the power grids. A section of the Eastern Regional Power Grid in India has been simulated in this paper by using the Alternative Transient Program for the purpose of defining high-frequency transient voltages which may occur during various switching events. The investigation reveals that such oscillatory voltages could excite natural frequencies of a 400/220/132-kV power transformer, which closely matches the terminal excitation frequencies. Short time Fourier transform (STFT) has been used to analyze the frequency contents of the oscillatory terminal excitation as well as the voltage response of the windings. The results of the STFT confirmed the presence of resonant frequency in the oscillatory terminal voltage and in the 400-kV main and tap changer windings of the transformer. It has been demonstrated that the voltage stresses in the windings under certain critical switching operations can exceed the stresses developed under the standard 1.2/50-\mus lightning impulse at the transformer's basic insulation level voltage. The reduction in winding voltage stresses under resonance is possible by deploying some remedial measures involving winding design modifications which have also been suggested in this paper. This paper describes a modified phase-shifted carrier-based pulsewidth-modulation (PSC-PWM) scheme for modular multilevel converters (MMC). In order to reduce the average device switching frequency, a reduced switching-frequency (RSF) voltage balancing algorithm is developed. This paper also proposes a circulating current suppressing controller (CCSC) to minimize the inner circulating current in an MMC. Based on the double line-frequency, negative-sequence rotational frame, the three-phase alternative circulating currents are decomposed into two dc components and are minimized by a pair of proportional integral controllers. Simulation results based on a detailed PSCAD/EMTDC model prove the effectiveness of the modified PSC-PWM method and the RSF voltage-balancing algorithm. The proposed CCSC not only eliminates the inner circulating current but also improves the quality of the converter ac output voltage. This paper proposes a novel bridge-type solid-state fault current limiter (BSSFCL) based on one series reactor which operates in ac and dc modes. The proposed BSSFCL includes a rectifier bridge with a reactor. This reactor is used as a dc reactor in normal operation mode and as an ac reactor in fault conditions. The advantages of the proposed BSSFCL over the existing dc reactor-type FCLs are its negligible impedance in normal operation mode and its high impedance during a fault interval using simple and novel switching. In other words, during the normal operation mode, the proposed BSSFCL operates in dc mode and in the fault interval, its topology is changed to the ac mode. This switching decreases the switching transient recovery voltage and introduces considerable impedance during the fault period. The large number of voltage levels in a modular multilevel converter (MMC) make staircase modulation a feasible alternative, particularly in high-power applications. However, staircase waveforms do not necessarily mean operation of the MMC submodules (SMs) at the fundamental frequency. This paper presents an analysis of SM switching frequencies in staircase-modulated MMCs and their correlation to the modulation index and load phase angle. A carrier-based pulsewidth-modulation (CB-PWM) equivalent technique is also developed. This analysis demonstrates that CB-PWM techniques provide a similar switching frequency with superior harmonic performance and improved voltage balancing characteristics at all modulation indices compared to staircase modulation. This paper presents a novel mitigation technique to reduce the effects of geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) on high-voltage power systems. The method consists of connecting switching devices at the neutral grounding connection point of transformer banks. Only one transformer bank needs to be grounded through a switch to reduce GIC in a two-terminal system. For multiterminal systems, n-1 switches are necessary and the operation is independent from each other. The switching frequency and the duty cycle are selected from a tradeoff between the effectiveness of the method and the detection of fault currents. Transient simulations on a two-bus 230/500 kV system show that the proposed switching at the neutral successfully mitigates the GIC. In this paper, a new concept for analyzing the dielectric severity supported along transformer windings when a transformer is submitted to a nonstandardized transient voltage waveform induced by switching operation of a vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) is examined. There are two new factors considered for evaluating the severity supported by the insulation windings in factory and in service. One factor is based on the methodology suggested by the authors called time-domain severity factor and another one is the frequency-domain severity factor. Both methodologies are here applied to two case studies in order to show and compare their capabilities and sensibilities to detect the risk of dielectric failures. In addition to supplying electrical power to the transmission grid, nuclear generating stations rely on the grid to provide power into the facility to support critical equipment during upsets. Although backup power supplies exist, such as diesel generators, the offsite power circuits are considered to be the “preferred power supplies” and must be kept at a high state of readiness. During certain operating conditions, the nuclear unit's generator is utilized to help support the voltage of the nearby high-voltage transmission system. If the offsite power circuits are served from the same high-voltage system, events that would result in tripping of the generator could also cause a depression of voltage on the offsite circuits due to loss of this voltage support. Nuclear operators must ensure that post-trip voltage levels are adequate to support critical equipment, such as emergency pumps and valves, during extreme postulated events, such as the rupture of reactor coolant system piping. Nuclear engineers utilize analytical models of their generating station electrical distribution system to determine the switchyard voltage level needed during various scenarios, but usually rely on outside organizations, such as transmission system operators and planners, to predict the change in switchyard voltage as a result of a nuclear generator trip. These organizations utilize complex models of the transmission system to make this determination. This paper presents a robust nonlinear controller design for a three-phase grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system to control the current injected into the grid and the dc-link voltage for extracting maximum power from PV units. The controller is designed based on the partial feedback linearization approach, and the robustness of the proposed control scheme is ensured by considering structured uncertainties within the PV system model. An approach for modeling the uncertainties through the satisfaction of matching conditions is provided. The superiority of the proposed robust controller is demonstrated on a test system through simulation results under different system contingencies along with changes in atmospheric conditions. The purpose of this paper is to propose and analyze the high-performance control strategies for a novel current source converter (CSC)-based wind turbine-superconducting magnetic energy storage system (SMES) hybrid system, which will, in turn, improve the operating performance for the wind farm not only in the grid-connected operation, but also in the islanding mode. The key is to design the effective active power controller and the ac bus voltage controller for the CSC-based hybrid system in grid-connected operation. Thus, better power smoothing and robust operation can be achieved. For the islanding mode operation, the capacitor voltage control scheme is proposed for the CSC hybrid system to offer efficient operation when the wind farm is disconnected from the grid. Proper operation of a multilevel flying capacitor converter (FCC) necessitates a closed-loop voltage balancing strategy. This paper proposes a space vector modulation (SVM)-based approach that benefits from the switching state redundancy of an n-level FCC to implicitly carry out the voltage balancing task within the switching strategy. Based on the voltage deviations of the capacitor voltages, a cost function is defined and minimized to choose the proper redundant switching states among the available switching states. The performance of a grid-connected four-level FCC under the proposed SVM strategy for various operating conditions is studied and evaluated based on time-domain simulations in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment, and experimentally verified. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is one of the most potential converter topologies for high-power/voltage systems, specifically for high-voltage direct current (HVDC). One of the main technical challenges of an MMC is to eliminate/minimize the circulating currents of converter arms while the capacitor voltages are maintained balanced. This paper proposes a model predictive control (MPC) strategy that takes the advantage of a cost function minimization technique to eliminate the circulating currents and carry out the voltage balancing task of an MMC-based back-to-back HVDC system. A discrete-time mathematical model of the system is derived and a predictive model corresponding to the discrete-time model is developed. The predictive model is used to select the best switching states of each MMC unit based on evaluation and minimization a defined cost function associated with the control objectives of MMC units and the overall HVDC system. The proposed predictive control strategy: 1) enables control of real and reactive power of the HVDC system; 2) achieves capacitor voltage balancing of the MMC units; and 3) mitigates the circulating currents of the MMC units. Performance of the proposed MPC-based strategy for a five-level back-to-back MMC-HVDC is evaluated based on time-domain simulation studies in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment. Voltage-source-converter (VSC) technologies present a bright opportunity in a variety of fields within the power system industry. New modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are expected to supersede two- and three-level VSC-based technologies for HVDC applications due to their recognized advantages in terms of scalability, performance, and efficiency. The computational burden introduced by detailed modeling of MMC-HVDC systems in electromagnetic-transients (EMT)-type programs complicates the study of transients especially when these systems are integrated into a large network. This paper presents a novel average-value model (AVM) for efficient and accurate representation of a detailed MMC–HVDC system. It also develops a detailed 401-level MMC-HVDC model for validating the AVM and studies the performance of both models when integrated into a large 400-kV transmission system in Europe. This paper applies nearest level control (NLC) to the modular multilevel converter (MMC). Since there are a number of submodules (SMs) in high-voltage applications of MMC and all SM voltages are required to be measured and sorted, if the uniform sampling frequency is not high enough, the SM will not be triggered as quickly as possible. Thus, the converter-output voltage levels and voltage harmonics will be affected. A method to systematically analyze the voltage harmonics is presented, considering the uniform sampling frequency. In order to select a proper sampling frequency, two critical values, which significantly influence the output voltage levels and voltage total harmonic distortions, are calculated. Simulation results based on PSCAD/EMTDC proved the validity of the proposed modulation scheme and the importance of a properly selected sampling frequency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes two new approaches for the determination of the direction of switched capacitor banks as well as an efficient technique for estimating the distance of switched capacitors from the monitoring location in distribution systems. At first, two new indices based on branch voltage and current changes immediately after the capacitor switching instant are proposed for determining the direction of switched capacitor banks. The wavelet transform is used to detect the exact instant of switching. Then, a new technique based on linear circuit theory is proposed to estimate the distance of the switched capacitor bank from the monitoring location using capacitor switching transient data. Simulation results show that the error of the estimated distance is acceptable. A combination of the approaches for direction finding and the technique for distance estimation provide a novel method for determining the location of switched capacitor banks in real distribution systems. The method is valid in all normal, back-to-back, and abnormal switching of wye- and delta-configured capacitor banks. Also, the size of the capacitor bank has no effect on method accuracy. This paper presents a neutral point voltage control strategy for the three-level active neutral point clamped (ANPC) converter using selective harmonic elimination pulsewidth modulation (SHE-PWM). The control strategy introduces a small change in the switching angles, which varies the duty cycle of the zero-level switching state, controls the neutral point current and, therefore, the neutral point voltage. The decision to vary a given switching angle takes into account the polarity of the output currents and the voltage across the lower dc-link capacitor. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified through extensive simulation studies and experimentally validated using a low power laboratory prototype. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
