This paper presents frequency domain (FD) Norton-type equivalents of single- and three-phase photovoltaic (PV) generators, aimed at transient calculations. The proposed equivalents can be interfaced with a general frequency-dependent network and/or nonlinear loads and include voltage/current sources representing initial conditions aimed at partitioned-time transient simulation. The transient solution is performed via the numerical Laplace transform (NLT) in a sequential scheme by using time sub-windows with corresponding initial conditions and using reduced number of samples. The proposed approach overcomes the issue of computationally heavy simulations as in classical implementations of NLT. Line-commutated converters are extensively used as the interface between ac grids and classic HVDC systems. At the inverter side, commutation failure of switches is one of the most common faults that can pose threats to the system operation. Practical and reliable study of such phenomena relies on accurate and efficient converter models for simulations. Recently, a parametric average-value model (PAVM) has been presented for ac–dc rectifiers, which considers the internal faults of the converter. In this paper, the PAVM methodology is extended to the dc–ac inverter systems, including the commutation failure of switches. The proposed PAVM also augments an automatic fault detection technique to determine the faulty switches. Using comprehensive simulation studies, the developed model is verified to accurately predict the commutation failure of switches and reconstruct the waveforms consistent with the detailed switching models of inverters while being computationally more efficient. This paper proposes an adaptive model of modular multilevel converter (MMC) for electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations. The model is applicable to MMCs with arbitrary numbers of half-bridge and full-bridge submodules. The proposed design includes average value model, arm equivalent model, and detailed equivalent model. It allows smoothly transitioning from one model to another during time-domain simulations depending on the desired accuracy and execution time constraints. Modifications required in conventional MMC models to achieve smooth transitions are presented in the paper. Time-domain initialization methods are developed for each constituting model, including initialization of the appropriate control system blocks. This paper presents an FPGA-based Digital Real-Time Simulation (DRTS) environment for the analysis of Electromagnetic Transients (EMTs) of power systems that include multiple Power Electronic Converters (PECs). The main features of the proposed DRTS platform are that it i) employs two-value resistor switch model for PECs and thus avoids inaccuracies of Associate Discrete Circuit (ADC) model and ii) does not require separation of PECs by transmission lines (stub lines) and thus accurately represents PECs in close electrical proximity of each other. These features respectively result in a time-variant and large system admittance matrix which significantly increases the computation burden in each simulation time-step and can render it infeasible for real-time applications. To overcome this problem this paper introduces i) Switching-Network Partitioning (SNP) method which is tailored for PECs representation in FPGA and ii) Reformulated Modified Nodal Analysis (RMNA) method to enable computational parallelism between the solution of network and component models in FPGA. SNP enables solution-level partitioning of the PECs and the rest of the system. The developed DRTS platform enables sub-microsecond simulation time-step and provides a fixed hardware irrespective of the system configuration. With the increasing penetration of renewable energies in modern power grids, large amounts of voltage source converters (VSCs) have been installed, resulting in many new transient issues. Electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation plays an essential role in investigating and solving the issues. However, simulation efficiency plunges when object grids contain multiple VSCs, because each switching event incurs modification or re-decomposition of the network matrix in traditional EMT programs, which is very time-consuming. Thus, this paper proposes a VSC model represented by pulse voltage-current source pairs. Accordingly, a unidirectional loosely-coupled solving algorithm is designed. Synthetically, the authors propose a novel EMT simulation approach adaptive to systems with multiple VSCs. The proposed approach keeps the computational network invariable while sufficiently considers detailed switching events, thereby significantly improving the simulation efficiency of the EMTP program without precision loss. The emerging voltage source converters (VSCs) such as hybrid cascaded multilevel converters (HCMCs) are promising converter technologies which enable higher converter efficiency, compactness, and DC fault resilience for high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission. However, the large number of switching events due to the converters’ submodules introduces a heavy computational burden for electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations. Efficient and accurate EMT-type converter models play a vital role in the control and design of HVDC converters. Several computationally efficient models for the HCMCs are proposed in this paper, including the detailed equivalent model (DEM) and several average value models (AVMs) of varying accuracy. Additionally, a combined model is proposed which allows the users to switch among the DEM and AVMs during dynamic simulations. The proposed models are validated against the DEM for dynamic transients. The simulation results demonstrate good modeling accuracy of the proposed models. This paper investigates the applicability of averaged-value models (AVMs) for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) operating in a voltage-sourced converter-based-high-voltage dc (VSC-HVDC) grid. The AVM models are benchmarked by comparison with a detailed electromagnetic transient model of the grid, including a fully detailed MMC model. Analysis results show that the AVM is only effective as long as the capacitors are large enough to maintain nearly constant voltage across each MMC submodule. This paper also shows that previously developed MMC averaged models are not able to accurately simulate the transients under dc fault conditions. This paper introduces topology changes to a previously proposed averaged model that results in much improved simulation for such conditions. Active front-end (AFE) rectifiers are becoming widely used in medium-to-high-power adjustable speed drives (ASDs) to achieve regenerative operation and meet the energy efficiency and harmonic requirements. The typical control methods used with AFE rectifiers include voltage-oriented control (VOC), direct power control (DPC) and virtual-flux-based methods. This paper presents a dynamic average-value model (AVM) of the AFE rectifier system which is based on the voltage-source converter (VSC) operated with DPC. The developed AVM and the modeling methodology presented in this paper highlight the specifics of the hysteresis bang-bang type DPC that is used to track the real and reactive power references. The proposed AVM of the AFE rectifier system is demonstrated to significantly reduce the computing effort while accurately capturing the fast transient performance of the system. The model of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) determines the extent of critical circuit information that electromagnetic transient simulations can reveal. In this paper, two MMC models are proposed for efficient real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) emulation on the field-programmable-gate-arrays (FPGA). The nonlinear switch-based model employing the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) dynamic curve-fitting model considers factors affecting its transient performance so that device-level behavior such as power loss and junction temperature can be reproduced accurately in the electro-magnetic-thermal simulation of a power converter for its design evaluation. Meanwhile, regarding the MMC submodule as a transmission line stub achieves faster computation speed and enables the formation of a hybrid arm to save FPGA hardware resources. As the large network that the MMC presents is burdensome for real-time execution with a small time-step, circuit simplification based on partitioning and merging is conducted. Hardware implementation of a three-terminal high-voltage direct-current system containing an MMC-based dc–dc converter is carried out and the efficacy of proposed models is validated by comparing HIL emulation results with the offline simulation tool PSCAD/EMTDC. This paper introduces a computationally efficient surrogate model-based approach for tolerance analysis of power systems. Surrogate models are heuristic, simple representations of complex systems that are obtained through an automated sensitivity analysis of electromagnetic transient simulations results. These simpler models are shown in this paper to be significantly faster than full-detail simulation models to obtain accurate statistical tolerance information about complex power networks. Usefulness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by two application examples. In the first example, surrogate models are used for determining the statistical distribution of undesired remnant harmonics produced by a voltage-source converter, given the uncertainty in the firing angles. The large number of switching elements in the modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a challenging problem when modeling the MMC-HVDC systems for the computation of electromagnetic transients. The modeling complexity increases even further when a multiterminal (MT) MMC-HVDC system is used to integrate offshore wind farms (OWFs) with power-electronics-based wind energy converters, such as doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs). This paper compares modeling accuracy and computational performances for various combinations of MMC and OWF models. Onshore and offshore ac fault simulations are performed for an OWF system composed of DFIG-type wind turbines and connected to a practical ac grid through an MT MMC-HVDC system. The OWF system model includes the detailed representation of the offshore collector grid and the associated overcurrent protection. This paper proposes an optimal design method of modular multilevel converter (MMC) levels to approach the reasonable compromise between accuracy and computational efficiency. The entire procedure is benchmarked by a Thévenin equivalent 451-level MMC model. First, the calculation method of the critical maximum simulation time step is proposed to faithfully represent each voltage level of the staircase waveforms. Second, the previously developed improved analytic hierarchy process is adopted to integrate the relative errors of all the main electrical parameters into one comprehensive relative error at each MMC level. Third, the steady state, ac, and dc transient state relative error results as well as the central-processing unit times of all models are normalized and curve fitted based on the benchmark model. Finally, the optimal MMC level is obtained by the plotted curves and the given subjective weights considering the accuracy and efficiency. This paper extends the concept of dynamic average-value modeling to power-electronic-intensive hybrid-electric vehicular power trains. Hybrid vehicles with plug-in capability are becoming increasingly important in the study of emerging smart power grids, and their simulation using digital programs has gained widespread attention. This paper demonstrates the usefulness of averaging in preserving the dynamic characteristics of the vehicular system while reducing the computational intensity of its simulation on an Electromagnetic Transients Program-type simulator. This paper presents an average-value model of a line-commutated converter-based HVDC system using dynamic phasors. The model represents the low-frequency dynamics of the converter and its ac and dc systems, and has lower computational requirements than a conventional electromagnetic-transient (EMT) switching model. The developed dynamic-phasor model is verified against an EMT model of the CIGRE HVDC Benchmark. Simulation results confirm the validity and accuracy of the average value model in predicting the low-frequency dynamics of the ac- and dc-side quantities. In addition to supplying electrical power to the transmission grid, nuclear generating stations rely on the grid to provide power into the facility to support critical equipment during upsets. Although backup power supplies exist, such as diesel generators, the offsite power circuits are considered to be the “preferred power supplies” and must be kept at a high state of readiness. During certain operating conditions, the nuclear unit's generator is utilized to help support the voltage of the nearby high-voltage transmission system. If the offsite power circuits are served from the same high-voltage system, events that would result in tripping of the generator could also cause a depression of voltage on the offsite circuits due to loss of this voltage support. Nuclear operators must ensure that post-trip voltage levels are adequate to support critical equipment, such as emergency pumps and valves, during extreme postulated events, such as the rupture of reactor coolant system piping. Nuclear engineers utilize analytical models of their generating station electrical distribution system to determine the switchyard voltage level needed during various scenarios, but usually rely on outside organizations, such as transmission system operators and planners, to predict the change in switchyard voltage as a result of a nuclear generator trip. These organizations utilize complex models of the transmission system to make this determination. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) may contain numerous insulated-gate bipolar transistors. The modeling of such converters for electromagnetic transient-type (EMT-type) simulations is complex. Detailed models used in MMC-HVDC simulations may require very large computing times. Simplified and averaged models have been proposed in the past to overcome this problem.
