This paper proposes an accurate impedance model for line commutated converter (LCC) in the stationary frame. The commutation overlap process caused by the transformer leakage inductance complicates the modeling for LCC. Traditional impedance models are derived in positive sequence and negative sequence frame based on the simplified commutation overlap process, which degrades the modeling accuracy and limits the description of frequency coupling. This paper systematically analyzes the effects of the commutation overlap process on the impedance model, and the impedance model with the accurate commutation overlap process is established in the dq-frame. For clearly revealing the frequency coupling phenomenon of the LCC, the complex space vector is employed to extend the impedance model in the dq-frame to the complex αβ-frame. A closed-loop model on PSCAD/EMTDC is used to verify the proposed impedance model in the time-domain and the frequency-domain. The degradation of the electrical contact in a gas insulated switchgear (GIS) is closely related to overheating at the contact. However, the disconnector contact is one of the hot contacts in GIS. Therefore, in this paper, the finite element method was used to solve the three-dimensional multiphysics coupling temperature rise field and flow field in the Single Phase in One Tank (SPIOT) type GIS disconnector under different operating conditions. From the perspective of temperature rise field and flow field, this paper analyzed the temperature rise characteristics under different working conditions and explored the feasibility of the direct application of air, CO2 and C4F7N/CO2 mixed gas to an electrical device. The disconnector temperature rise experiment platform was then built to verify the simulation. The results showed that the temperature rise field and the flow field distribution were similar in four gas environments. SF6 gas had the smallest temperature rise, followed by C4F7N/CO2 mixed gas, and the temperature rise of CO2 and air was relatively large. Therefore, from the perspective of the temperature rise field and flow field, it was feasible to directly apply C4F7N/CO2 mixed gas to an electrical device in order to meet insulation requirements. This paper presents an FPGA-based Digital Real-Time Simulation (DRTS) environment for the analysis of Electromagnetic Transients (EMTs) of power systems that include multiple Power Electronic Converters (PECs). The main features of the proposed DRTS platform are that it i) employs two-value resistor switch model for PECs and thus avoids inaccuracies of Associate Discrete Circuit (ADC) model and ii) does not require separation of PECs by transmission lines (stub lines) and thus accurately represents PECs in close electrical proximity of each other. These features respectively result in a time-variant and large system admittance matrix which significantly increases the computation burden in each simulation time-step and can render it infeasible for real-time applications. To overcome this problem this paper introduces i) Switching-Network Partitioning (SNP) method which is tailored for PECs representation in FPGA and ii) Reformulated Modified Nodal Analysis (RMNA) method to enable computational parallelism between the solution of network and component models in FPGA. SNP enables solution-level partitioning of the PECs and the rest of the system. The developed DRTS platform enables sub-microsecond simulation time-step and provides a fixed hardware irrespective of the system configuration. For Electro-Magnetic-Transient (EMT) simulations of power networks with switches, techniques such as linear interpolation and Critical Damping Adjustment (CDA) are widely used for improving numerical robustness. This paper analyzes the numerical stability of simulations with these techniques. Firstly, it is mathematically shown that the interpolation or CDA step is equivalent to the introduction of additional switching states. Subsequently, Common Quadratic Lyapunov Function (CQLF) theory is used to investigate the numerical stability of the whole simulation considering these new switching states. It is proved that the widely used strategies like linear interpolation and CDA always result a stable simulation if the original switched system is strictly passive in all switching states. Finally, it is shown that the developed approach can be used to determine the stability of other practical interpolation methods. Examples are provided to verify the proposed technique. DC transformer is an essential equipment for formation of multi-voltage-level DC grid. This paper proposes a novel non-isolated Boost-type alternate arm DC transformer (Boost-AADCT) for medium- and high-voltage level DC grid application. The Boost-AADCT is comprised of three submodule-cascaded arms, two thyristor-cascaded director switches, and two buffer capacitors. Bidirectional power transmission is achieved by alternatively charging and discharging of the intermediate arm following the Boost principle, while the pulsating power component caused by intermittent transmission is actively smoothened by grid-side buffer subcircuits formed by the buffer capacitors and grid-side arms. The active power buffering method increases the tolerance range of voltage ripple of the buffer capacitor, and the required energy storage capacity is resultantly reduced. Circuit configuration, operation principle, and mathematical model are first introduced. Then, the control strategy is proposed, the main circuit parameters are designed, and bidirectional fault-blocking capability is analyzed. Comparison with other DC-DC converters shows that the Boost-AADCT significantly reduces the requirement of semiconductors and has relatively lower synthetic cost. With the increasing penetration of renewable energies in modern power grids, large amounts of voltage source converters (VSCs) have been installed, resulting in many new transient issues. Electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation plays an essential role in investigating and solving the issues. However, simulation efficiency plunges when object grids contain multiple VSCs, because each switching event incurs modification or re-decomposition of the network matrix in traditional EMT programs, which is very time-consuming. Thus, this paper proposes a VSC model represented by pulse voltage-current source pairs. Accordingly, a unidirectional loosely-coupled solving algorithm is designed. Synthetically, the authors propose a novel EMT simulation approach adaptive to systems with multiple VSCs. The proposed approach keeps the computational network invariable while sufficiently considers detailed switching events, thereby significantly improving the simulation efficiency of the EMTP program without precision loss. Fast and detailed calculations of harmonics, generated by three-phase uncontrolled rectifiers with finite dc smoothing, can be performed by using detailed analytical procedures (DAPs). Several DAPs are developed for continuous- and discontinuous-conduction modes (CCM and DCM) when balanced operation of the system is assumed. The authors of this paper have recently proposed a new DAP (model 1a) in which nonideal conditions, such as unbalances and even harmonic voltages on the ac side, are taken into account. However, only CCM is assumed in model 1a. The main objective of this paper is to overcome this limitation of model 1a so that a new DAP (model 1b) for DCM is presented, which is capable of considering unbalanced operation. Two key problems in meshed high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission grids are managing line power flows and protection against dc faults. Current flow controllers (CFCs) will be required to balance cable currents in meshed dc grids, in order to prevent individual line power capacity limits restricting overall power flow in the grid. Direct current circuit breakers (DCCBs) will be also required to protect HVDC grids from dc faults. This paper demonstrates that the current flow controller functionality can be added into a hybrid CB's design. This paper proposes integrating an interline CFC into the load commutation switch (LCS) of a hybrid DCCB. The integrated design LCS/CFC is analyzed and a state-space model is derived. The control of the CFC is designed and the performance of the LCS/CFC during normal operation is verified by means of MATLAB Simulink and PSCAD simulations. A comparison of the integrated LCS/CFC and the separate design is given. The case studies show a reduction in total power losses, and improved protection operation times can be achieved. Developing an effective harmonic power flow tool requires fast and accurate calculations of the harmonics generated by the nonlinear elements. This paper presents a time-domain-based method for obtaining all steady-state characteristic and noncharacteristic harmonics generated by three-phase diode bridge rectifiers, under unbalanced and distorted supply. The developed model is generic and able to address both continuous- and discontinuous-conduction modes with a single formulation. By introducing a virtual resistance on the rectifier's DC side, the model is extended to accommodate any DC-side filter. Further, a unique analytical Jacobian matrix is developed to guarantee a quadratic convergence for the iterative part of the proposed method. This paper presents an accurate steady-state initialization method for electromagnetic transient (EMT) models of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). The proposed method uses steady-state arm voltages and currents to initialize internal electrical variables and control systems of the converter, including capacitor voltage and gating signals of each sub-module. In addition to typical voltage source converter upper level control, MMC specific controls are also considered, including circulating current control, dc ripple control, and capacitor voltage balancing algorithm. On transmission lines where switching surges are not mitigated with closing resistors and/or surge arresters, high-speed reclosing on a line with trapped charge will produce high overvoltages that have been measured above 3 p.u. Careful simulations of these switching events using available electromagnetic transient (EMT) programs consistently produce significantly higher voltages than the measurements. This indicates a phenomenon present on the line that acts to reduce the switching surge magnitudes but is not typically modeled. This paper aims to identify the required simulation practices in reproducing the field measured overvoltages in EMT simulations and investigates the sensitivity of results to modeling approaches and electrical parameters. Field measurements from a switching surge test of a 230-kV line without surge mitigation have been used for model comparisons. Variations in frequency-dependent line modeling, ground resistivity, skin effect, shunt conductance, parallel lines, and source-side detail have been tested in an unsuccessful attempt to decrease the difference between the field measurements and the higher simulation overvoltages. It is demonstrated that even though the pattern of the transient voltage waveforms can be reproduced very well using frequency-dependent line models, the magnitude of the maximum overvoltage is significantly overestimated unless the effect of corona is considered. Two types of corona models are tested, and both demonstrate that corona is the primary factor that allows the simulations to correctly reproduce high peak overvoltage measurements. This paper investigates the applicability of averaged-value models (AVMs) for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) operating in a voltage-sourced converter-based-high-voltage dc (VSC-HVDC) grid. The AVM models are benchmarked by comparison with a detailed electromagnetic transient model of the grid, including a fully detailed MMC model. Analysis results show that the AVM is only effective as long as the capacitors are large enough to maintain nearly constant voltage across each MMC submodule. This paper also shows that previously developed MMC averaged models are not able to accurately simulate the transients under dc fault conditions. This paper introduces topology changes to a previously proposed averaged model that results in much improved simulation for such conditions. Unbalanced power of three-phase stationary linear loads with a neutral conductor, supplied with sinusoidal symmetrical voltages and its reactive compensation, is the subject of this paper. A novel power equation of such loads is developed. The suggested power equation is based on the decomposition of the load current into Current Physical Components (CPC). This paper shows that all powers can be expressed in terms of the load parameters and this creates fundamentals for design of balancing reactive compensators capable of improving the power factor to unity. A reactive balancing compensator is composed, in general, of two compensators in the \Delta and Y configuration. Ignoring the dynamic impedance characteristics of a thyristor-controlled series-capacitor-type fault current limiter (TCSC-FCL) may lead to maloperation/fail-to-trip or slow response of distance protection. To solve the above problem, the TCSC-FCL dynamic impedance analysis model was established. Taking the special operation mode of the TCSC-FCL into account, the time-varying characteristics of the TCSC-FCL during the whole process from the series compensation mode to the current-limiting mode were analyzed. Then, this paper proposed the function expression of dynamic impedance characteristics of the TCSC-FCL and put forward the distance protection setting strategy based on a dynamic offset impedance circle in order to eliminate the influence of TCSC-FCL dynamic impedance characteristics to the distance protection operation. By establishing a typical simulation model including the TCSC-FCL, the correctness of dynamic feature's analytic expression and the distance protection setting strategy is proved with extensive simulation results. Recently, a modular multilevel converter (MMC) has become one of the most popular converters in medium/high-power applications. In this paper, a new technique is presented to decrease the computational time of the MMC by using switching state grouping for the predictive controller. The proposed technique has the ability to control the output current, minimize the circulating currents, and balance all capacitor voltages, simultaneously. For a predefined number of MMC submodules, the number available switching states is known. The proposed technique uses two stages of predictive modules. In the first stage, the switching states of the MMC are divided equally into a number of groups, controlled simultaneously by the same number of predictive modules. The optimal number of the switching state groups in the first stage is obtained. In the second stage, only one predictive module is used to obtain the optimal switching state of the MMC without any other complexities or additional sorting controllers. The effectiveness of the proposed control technique has been verified by using MATLAB/SIMULINK software considering steady state and dynamic analysis. A control technique is proposed in this paper for control of modular multilevel converters (MMC) in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Six independent dynamical state variables are considered in the proposed control technique, including two ac currents, three circulating currents, and the dc-link voltage, for effectively attaining the switching state functions of MMCs, as well as for an accurate control of the circulating currents. Several analytical expressions are derived based on the reference values of the state variables for obtaining the MMC switching functions under steady state operating conditions. In addition, dynamic parts of the switching functions are accomplished by the direct Lyapunov method to guarantee stable operation of the proposed technique for control of MMCs in HVDC systems. Moreover, the capability curve of MMC is developed to validate maximum power injection from MMCs into the power grid and/or loads. This paper reveals the existence of poorly damped resonant modes in the modular multilevel converter (MMC) that can result in harmonic instability. A small-signal model based on dynamic phasors is introduced which takes into consideration the dynamics of internal variables, such as circulating arm currents, which have a tendency for a large second harmonic component and module capacitor voltage ripple, which has other harmonic components. The small-signal model is validated by comparison with the electromagnetic transient simulation of a detailed model. It is shown that the use of an active circulating current suppressing scheme can effectively improve the damping of internal harmonic modes in comparison with a passive filter used for the same purpose. The damping of internal harmonic modes has been shown to be significantly impacted by the gains of the MMC's outer-loop controller but is less sensitive to the ac system strength or the gain of the phase-locked loop. This paper presents a new solution method that combines state-space and nodal analysis for the simulation of electrical systems. The presented flexible clustering of state-space-described electrical subsystems into a nodal method offers several advantages for the efficient solution of switched networks, nonlinear functions, and for interfacing with nodal model equations. This paper extends the concept of discrete companion branch equivalent of the nodal approach to state-space described systems and enables natural coupling between them. Detailed analytical procedures (DAPs) are very efficient methods for obtaining the steady-state solution and the harmonic evaluation of three-phase diode bridges with finite capacitive dc smoothing. In this paper, a framework for distribution system optimization is proposed. In this framework, different control variables, such as switchable capacitors, voltage regulators, and system configuration can be optimally determined to satisfy objectives, such as loss minimization and voltage profile improvement. Linearized power-flow equations are used in the optimization, and the problem is formulated as mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP), which has a guaranteed optimal solution. Existing efficient solution algorithms developed for MIQP problems facilitate the application of the proposed framework. System operational constraints, such as feeder ampacities, voltage drops, radiality, and the number of switching actions are considered in the model. This paper presents an average-value model of a line-commutated converter-based HVDC system using dynamic phasors. The model represents the low-frequency dynamics of the converter and its ac and dc systems, and has lower computational requirements than a conventional electromagnetic-transient (EMT) switching model. The developed dynamic-phasor model is verified against an EMT model of the CIGRE HVDC Benchmark. Simulation results confirm the validity and accuracy of the average value model in predicting the low-frequency dynamics of the ac- and dc-side quantities. This paper presents an efficient hybrid approach for volt/var control in distribution systems, with switching limits on taps and shunts. Since the problem is nondeterministic polynomial hard and combinatorial with huge solution space, metaheuristic techniques, despite being computationally expensive, have been used. The proposed approach combines the strengths of a gradient technique and a metaheuristic technique. In the first phase, the primal-dual interior point method (PDIPM) treats the discrete variables as continuous. These are then discretized using PDIPM-based sensitivities. These two solutions provide heuristic bounds on controls which are used in the second phase by a metaheuristic algorithm. The bounds aid in limiting the number of controls' combinations. Results for two systems have been obtained which ascertain the potential of the proposed approach over the conventional metaheuristic technique. This paper presents a robust nonlinear controller design for a three-phase grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system to control the current injected into the grid and the dc-link voltage for extracting maximum power from PV units. The controller is designed based on the partial feedback linearization approach, and the robustness of the proposed control scheme is ensured by considering structured uncertainties within the PV system model. An approach for modeling the uncertainties through the satisfaction of matching conditions is provided. The superiority of the proposed robust controller is demonstrated on a test system through simulation results under different system contingencies along with changes in atmospheric conditions. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) may contain numerous insulated-gate bipolar transistors. The modeling of such converters for electromagnetic transient-type (EMT-type) simulations is complex. Detailed models used in MMC-HVDC simulations may require very large computing times. Simplified and averaged models have been proposed in the past to overcome this problem. In this paper, existing averaged and simplified models are improved in order to increase their range of applications. This paper investigates a new family of converters for high-power transfer between dc buses with different voltage levels. The proposed converters achieve high-voltage dc-dc conversion without an intermediate ac conversion stage. Three converter circuits are investigated, all based on the use of a common switching cell module. The first is a step-down converter, the second is a step-up converter, and the third is an inverting step-up/downconverter. For each converter, the structure is presented, its operation principle is explained, and the design equations are derived. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is based on the cascaded connection of identical submodules (SMs) enabling additional redundancies. This paper proposes the configuration of the MMC topology with redundant SMs and demonstrates the effects of active redundancies. The proposed configuration decreases the switching frequency per SM while reducing the SM capacitor voltage ripples. An analytical model for determining the SM capacitor voltage ripple and voltage dynamics is derived. The results from the analytical model are compared with the switching model for a 21-level MMC with five redundant (25 in total) SMs per arm. Experimental results based on a single-phase laboratory prototype with five SMs per arm and a single redundant cell further illustrate the operation and verify the derived mathematical model and simulation results. This paper presents a harmonic state-space (HSS) model of a three-phase thyristor-controlled reactor (TCR) in a voltage-control application. In using the HSS description, the importance of incorporating the effect of harmonic interaction on the dynamics of a power system containing a TCR or other flexible ac transmission system controllers is illustrated. Although nonlinear in nature, the significant effect of switching instant variation is included in the linearized model. The model size is minimized with the selection of the minimum necessary set of harmonic frequencies. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is one of the most potential converter topologies for high-power/voltage systems, specifically for high-voltage direct current (HVDC). One of the main technical challenges of an MMC is to eliminate/minimize the circulating currents of converter arms while the capacitor voltages are maintained balanced. This paper proposes a model predictive control (MPC) strategy that takes the advantage of a cost function minimization technique to eliminate the circulating currents and carry out the voltage balancing task of an MMC-based back-to-back HVDC system. A discrete-time mathematical model of the system is derived and a predictive model corresponding to the discrete-time model is developed. The predictive model is used to select the best switching states of each MMC unit based on evaluation and minimization a defined cost function associated with the control objectives of MMC units and the overall HVDC system. The proposed predictive control strategy: 1) enables control of real and reactive power of the HVDC system; 2) achieves capacitor voltage balancing of the MMC units; and 3) mitigates the circulating currents of the MMC units. Performance of the proposed MPC-based strategy for a five-level back-to-back MMC-HVDC is evaluated based on time-domain simulation studies in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment. Electric power distribution systems of many commercial and industrial sites often employ variable frequency drives and other loads that internally utilize dc. Such loads are often based on front-end line-commutated rectifiers. The detailed switch-level models of such rectifier systems can be readily implemented using a number of widely available digital programs and transient simulation tools, including the Electromagnetic Transient (EMT)-based programs and Matlab/Simulink. To improve the simulation efficiency for the system-level transient studies with a large number of such subsystems, the so-called dynamic average models have been utilized. This paper presents the average-value modeling methodologies for the conventional three-phase (six-pulse) front-end rectifier loads. This paper deals with the modeling and analysis of a five-legged rectifier transformer that is used for parallel operation of two three-pulse rectifiers, specifically, for low-voltage high-current applications. The five-legged system is compared with the conventional rectifier system consisting of a three-legged transformer and interphase transformer (IPT). Ensuring equal current sharing between the rectifiers and obtaining output voltage with a higher pulse number are the two major requirements which are satisfied in the conventional system. A mathematical explanation for the five-legged system satisfying the mentioned requirements is given. The system is treated as a strongly coupled circuit field one, where a nonlinear finite-element model of the five-legged transformer is coupled with nonlinear circuit equations. Applications of solid-state converters and inverters for adjustable speed drives (ASDs) are popular in industrial systems and lead to a significant amount of harmonic and interharmonic currents being injected into the connected system. This paper presents an accurate analytical approach for the assessment of the harmonic and interharmonic currents generated by the voltage-source inverter-fed ASDs operated under unbalanced supply voltages, where the commutaton effect of the ASD converter and the detailed motor circuit model with various load levels are included. To validate the accuracy of the proposed approach, simulation results are performed by comparing those obtained by a time-domain simulation tool and by laboratory tests. It is shown that the proposed method can effectively calculate the harmonic and interharmonic currents produced by the ASD, either under balanced or unbalanced supply-voltage conditions.
