Compared to conventional ac cables, the current rating of HVDC cable circuits is more complicated because the permissible current is not only limited by the operating temperature, but also by the electrical stress within the insulation. Therefore the IEC60287 current rating standard is considered insufficient for some HVDC applications because it fails to include the stress limitation. This paper presents an analytical methodology to calculate an electrical stress-limited rating for HVDC cables, which considers the maximum dielectric stress as the current limiting factor. The converter transformers are reported to fail generally on the thyristor-valve side, where complex alternating voltage waveforms superimposed with dc voltages would occur. The effect of these waveforms on the failure and endurance of the valve side winding insulation of the transformers is not yet understood, which is investigated here. In this paper, the voltage waveforms occurring in a converter transformer are obtained through PSCAD/EMTDC for a typical double pole ±500 kV, 1000 MW DC-link HVDC transmission system based on the CIGRE benchmark system. The waveforms are then amplified using a High Voltage amplifier for experimental breakdown investigations. Stepped-stress damage equalization method has been used for obtaining the lifetime characteristics from failure data. A comparison with life curve under pure sinusoidal and actual alternating voltages with superimposed dc and harmonic voltage has been made to understand why the converter transformers generally failed on the valve side. Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) have achieved to enhance the flexibility of modern AC power systems, by providing fast, reliable and controllable solutions to steer the power flows and voltages in the network. The proliferation of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems is leading to the opportunity of interconnecting several HVDC systems forming HVDC Supergrids. Such grids can eventually evolve to meshed systems which interconnect a number of different AC power systems and large scale offshore wind (or other renewable sources) power plants and clusters. While such heavily meshed systems can be considered futuristic and will not certainly happen in the near future, the sector is witnessing initial steps in this direction. In order to ensure the flexibility and controllability of meshed DC grids, the shunt connected AC-DC converters can be combined with additional simple and flexible DC-DC converters which can directly control current and power through the lines. The proposed DC-DC converters can provide a range of services to the HVDC grid, including power flow control capability, ancillary services for the HVDC grid or adjacent grids, stability improvement, oscillation damping, pole balancing and voltage control. The present paper presents relevant developments from industry and academia in the direction of the development of these converters, considering technical concepts, converter functionalities and possible integration with other existing systems. This paper provides a pragmatic solution to the challenge of testing fault current interruption of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) circuit breakers (CBs). The critical parameters in the design of a test circuit capable of supplying the necessary stresses: current, energy, and voltage (both during and after interruption) are discussed. In addition, a practical implementation of a test circuit based on ac short-circuit generators operated at low power frequency, which is capable of testing the current interruption performance of the proposed technologies of HVDC CBs, is discussed. Tests validating the proposed method and circuit have been conducted on a prototype of an HVDC CB and the test results are presented. Since the performance of some technologies of HVDC CBs can depend on the magnitude of the interrupted current, four test duties are defined and demonstrated in the paper. Moreover, testing of HVDC CBs using ac short-circuit generators poses new challenges, such as the application of dielectric dc stress after current interruption and the protection of both the test-object as well as the test-circuit components when the HVDC CB fails to interrupt. Methods to overcome these challenges are developed and practically demonstrated in a test laboratory. Finally, taking into account the available resources of the author's test laboratory, the capability to test multiple series-connected modules of different technologies of HVDC CBs is verified and example cases are demonstrated. With the increase in number of VSC based HVDC systems, it is inevitable that there would be interconnections with weak ac grids. The paper presents the analytical basis for identifying coupling in the power loops which is dependent on grid inductance and operating point by utilizing the impedance based modeling technique. The formulation is used to define an inverse-based decoupling outer-loop controller for VSC-HVDC system. The concept is extended to HVDC grids and it is shown that the gains obtained using simple inverse may lead to instability. Robust controller tuning with pole-placement and minimization of $H_\infty$ norm is presented for HVDC grids, which form a restricted feedback system. The results show that the proposed method of decoupling results in effective decoupling of the power loops over a large range of grid inductance values as compared to that with traditional vector control. The system stability is also maintained over a large range of grid inductance values and PLL gains when a sudden variation of parameters is considered. The stability margins can be enhanced by pole-placement. The observations from the small-signal models are confirmed using detailed time-domain simulations. Conventional half bridge modular multilevel converter (MMC) system will suffer great over-current when there is a dc side fault. Therefore, topology study in sub-modules with dc side fault blocking capability have become one of the hotspots in MMC field. However, fault blocking topologies using conventional IGBT devices must employ more semiconductors than half bridge topology. The extra semiconductor devices employed in the topology will lead to the increase of cost and conduction loss. To reduce the conduction loss of the fault blocking topology, a novel sub-module topology is proposed in this paper. The proposed topology employs reverse blocking devices to form the low conduction loss path. Conduction loss analysis is conducted in this paper to show the priority of the proposed topology. DC-DC converters are needed for the future development of high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids, as they allow to interconnect lines with different voltages and topologies. The dc-dc converters can increase the grid controllability adding power flow control, voltage regulation and/or fault blocking capability. The dc modular multilevel converter (dc-MMC) is a non-isolated solution proposed to interconnect HVDC systems with the same line topology. This paper proposes a new dc-MMC with a control strategy, which allows the converter to interconnect different line topologies (e.g., rigid bipole connected to a symmetric monopole). The paper presents the different line topologies in HVDC installations. Then, a mathematical model with a variable transformation is proposed for the new dc-dc converter. A control structure is proposed and implemented in Matlab/Simulink using an average arm model and simplified dc grids. The hybrid LCC/VSC cascaded HVDC (HC-HVDC) scheme, in which the LCC is adopted as rectifier, and one LCC in series with multiple paralleled VSC based MMCs is adopted as inverter, combines the advantages of both LCC and VSC-MMC technologies. Presently, a HC-HVDC project is planned to deliver the hydro power from Baihetan to Jiangsu in China. One of the major challenges is to suppress the DC overcurrent issue of VSC-MMCs especially under commutation failure condition of LCC at inverter side. Based on Baihetan-Jiangsu project under construction, the model of HC-HVDC system is developed in PSCAD/EMTDC. In the system, the rectifier employs a dual 12-pulse LCC, while the inverter adopts a hybrid scheme, i.e., one LCC converter in series with three paralleled VSC-MMC converters. This paper addresses the main cause and feature of the DC overcurrent, then proposes an overcurrent suppression control method for HC-HVDC system based on fuzzy clustering and identification approach. And the system transient performances with the proposed control approach are evaluated under AC fault conditions. The results show that the proposed approach can not only suppress the DC overcurrent following the commutation failure to a certain extent, but also improve the post-fault recovery performance of the overall system. This paper presents improved indices to evaluate the contribution of reactive power compensators at HVdc converter terminals. The presence of such compensators impacts converter performance, such as the maximum available power (MAP) limit, susceptance to commutation failure, fault recovery time and temporary over voltage. Traditionally, the Effective Short Circuit Ratio (ESCR) has been used to indicate system strength. However, this index cannot be directly applied when power-electronics based converters are used to provide the reactive power support. The approach of this paper is to use an improved form of the ‘Apparent increase in Short Circuit Ratio’ (AISCR) index to quantify the impact of the compensator on the HVdc system. This index is evaluated by comparing the performance with the reactive power device with a system without the device, but having the same performance. The paper shows that a single AISCR index cannot quantify all behaviors and suggest modifications to AISCR for each of several HVdc phenomena. Aiming at the fault traveling wave on the LCC-MMC HVDC transmission line, this paper analyzed its reflection and refraction characteristics at the DC buses and the fault point, plotted its propagation grid diagrams, obtained the relationship between the polarity of fault traveling wave and the boundary elements, and drew the conclusion that when the impedance of DC filter is far less than the wave impedance of transmission line, the existing fault location methods that need to distinguish these two waves according to their polarities are not applicable to the LCC-MMC HVDC system. On these bases, this paper proposed a modal traveling wave arrival time difference-based location principle for pole-to-ground fault, and a fault traveling wave propagation path ratio-based location principle for pole-to-pole fault, these principles neither need to identify the wave polarity, nor need the wave velocity value. In order to better extract the wave heads and their arrival time, this paper pre-treated the sampling data to make sure all the wave heads are extracted from the same frequency band, then the wave heads and their arrival time can be extracted with the empirical mode decomposition. HVDC grid protection with adequate speed and reliability is required to minimise the impact of DC faults. In particular, fast breaker failure backup protection algorithms are needed to meet the expected reliability requirements of HVDC grids. In this paper, existing breaker failure backup protection algorithms are shown inadequate to detect partial failures like a single module failure of breakers with a modular structure. This paper proposes a backup protection algorithm which rapidly detects a DC breaker failure based on estimating the counter-voltage created by the energy absorption branch during an interruption. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using a four-terminal test network with both hybrid and mechanical DC breaker technologies. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is able to quickly detect both complete and partial failures of the two breaker technologies even considering measurement errors, noise and ageing of the energy absorption components. In actual line-commutated converter based high- voltage direct-current (LCC-HVDC) projects, multiple HVDC transmission lines are usually installed on the same tower to save transmission corridors and reduce construction costs. However, electromagnetic coupling effect between adjacent lines can cause commutation failure (CF) in the non-fault poles when a line or pole fails. Hence, this paper deeply investigates the mechanism and the prevention strategy of CFs caused by line coupling effect in single- and double-circuit HVDC systems. The influencing factors of line coupling effect and the coupling characteristics under fault conditions are analyzed first based on the modeling of parallel transmission lines and the traveling wave theory. Then the mechanism of CF caused by line coupling effect is investigated with the consideration of different fault conditions, different line structures, and different system operation modes. Based on the above analyses, prevention strategies for CFs of non-fault poles in single- and double-circuit systems are proposed. This paper deals with the modeling, hardware results and model validation by measurements of a VSC assisted resonant current (VARC) dc circuit breaker (CB) and the application within a future network by simulation. The newly emerging VARC dc CB can be used as a solution for the protection of offshore multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) grids. In this paper, the proposed VARC dc CB is modeled in detail in a PSCAD environment, by taking into account dielectric strength of the vacuum gap, high-frequency current quenching ability and parasitic components. The PSCAD-model is then verified by data from the testing of a 27 kV VARC dc CB prototype with maximum current interruption capability of 10 kA. Additionally, the initial transient interruption voltage and current slope at zero-crossing during the interruption are analyzed. With respect to scaling to a higher voltage level, three types of series connected modules are presented and the performances are compared. The performance of the series connected modules is simulated in a model of a 4-terminal HVDC grid. The modular multilevel DC converter (M2DC) exploits the interleaving between the three legs of an MMC to realize a promising uninsulated DC/DC converter to interconnect HVDC grids. This paper details a current and energies decoupled model of the M2DC. The major idea proposed in this paper is focused on the full energy control generating optimal current references to minimize the internal currents magnitude. The energy sum and difference models are fully detailed. Both current and energy control loops are based on the model inversion principle in order to control all the state variables. The proposed control is based a dynamic control developed with the model inversion principle associated with an optimization of the current magnitude deduced from a quasi-static analysis. All dynamics of the system are then explicitly controlled, which guarantee a good dynamic behavior during the transient. Therefore, current and energy controls are presented in detail. Offshore wind farms pose the challenge of transmission of produced energy in an economic and effective way over long distances, justifying investments in High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems. A solution to surmount the need for an expensive and large power transformer station is to connect each wind turbine to a DC/DC converter in which a Medium Frequency Transformer (MFT) is utilized to reduce the size of the station. Further, the DC outputs of the converters of the wind turbines can be connected in series to create a high DC voltage. In this solution, the MFTs are required to be insulated against a high DC voltage to ground in a limited compartment. This contribution presents a prototype of a 50 kW oil-paper insulated MFT operating at biased 422/4500 V/V AC 5 kHz and 125 kV DC test voltage, which has been manufactured and subjected to verification HV tests. The dielectric design of the prototype MFT based on finite element solution of non-linear Maxwell-Wagner equations is introduced and the acceptance criteria and practical design considerations are discussed. Power flow (PF) flexibility in the multi-terminal HVDC (MT-HVDC) grids is a thought-provoking issue. It leads to employing the active DC power flow controller (DC-PFC)s. Hence, this paper examines the static average model (AM) and power injection model (PIM) of an interline DC-PFC (IDC-PFC). It is to provide a suitable base for DC PF studies and easy embedding of the DC-PFCs into MT-HVDC grids’ PF equations. In this regard, this paper proposes a new DC PF solver (DC-PFS) for the IDC-PFC compensated MT-HVDC grids within the well-accepted Newton-Raphson (NR) framework. It requires a few modifications in the main structure of the system's Jacobin (J) matrix compared to the uncompensated MT-HVDC grid. Also, the system's admittance matrix and its symmetry are preserved. In the proposed concept, the IDC-PFC cooperates with other MT-HVDC grid's state variables to satisfy the predetermined control objective(s). Furthermore, this paper proposes a new solution procedure (SP) to handle various system's limitations during the processes of solving the DC PF problem. Meanwhile, there is no need to modify the related J matrix. The effective and accurate performance of the IDC-PFC's models, as well as presented NR-based DC-PFS and SP, are verified by performing several simulations on the 8-bus CIGRE MT-HVDC grid. A DC system saturated core fault current limiter (DCSFCL) was proposed to limit the fast rising trend of fault current in HVDC system. However, traditional method to calculate and design the DCSFCL tend to neglect leakage flux around the permanent magnet (PM), leading to large calculation error and inappropriate design procedure. The novel contribution of this paper is that it proposed a modularization method to analyze the permeance of both PM and adjacent air. Hence, the leakage flux effect is considered properly and a more accurate permeance matrix can be derived in a pure mathematical way. In this case, DCSFCL can be calculated much faster than the FEA simulation program with a promising accuracy regarding fault limiting performance. More importantly, design flow of the DCSFCL and related PM biased devices was given as well. Calculation result shows that inductance value calculated by the proposed method has less than 1% error compared with fine meshed FEA simulation result and about 20% increase in accuracy compared with traditional method that neglects PM leakage flux effect. As large-scale offshore wind farms are integrated into the power grid, a hybrid multi-infeed HVDC (HMIDC) system including both LCC-HVDC and VSC-HVDC links is facing a critical steady-state voltage stability problem which mainly stems from a weak AC system under high-level DC power injections. To overcome this challenge, this paper proposes a general steady-state voltage stability analysis to accurately measure the critical voltage stability point of HMIDC systems. In this paper, a typical HMIDC system is firstly modeled as a general dual-infeed system composed of an LCC-HVDC, a VSC-HVDC, and a virtual equivalent voltage source behind a virtual equivalent impedance at the AC side. Then a hybrid power sensitive factor (HPSF) is established to indicate the critical voltage stability point with the consideration of dynamic power-voltage characteristics of HVDC links, as well as operational changes in AC system (e.g. dynamics of excitation voltage control in generator and network topology change). Finally, a general voltage stability index, called hybrid generalized short circuit ratio (HGSCR), is further derived to effectively explain the critical voltage stability point of HMIDC systems. Moreover, multiple comparative studies with existing voltage stability indices are conducted in this paper to verify the effectiveness of the proposed general steady-state voltage stability analysis by using both PSCAD/EMTDC™ power flow and time-domain simulations. This paper presents a small-signal dynamic model for a modular multilevel converter (MMC) based HVDC grid, and then systematically i) identifies the system dominant oscillatory modes, ii) quantifies their propensity to instability phenomena, and iii) devises appropriate countermeasures. Based on the developed model, the eigen structure of an HVDC grid is characterized and the impact of the system parameters, configuration, AC system strength and operating point on the damping ratios of the oscillatory modes, and consequently the HVDC grid stability, are investigated. The model is also applied to systematically determine the sensitive parameters and optimize them to mitigate oscillatory modes and prevent instability. Hybrid high voltage direct current systems utilized for bulk-power transmission have recently attracted more attention. The overhead lines (OHLs) are mainly used for the implementation of such systems due to their outstanding economic advantages. However, OHLs are vulnerable to temporary faults, jeopardizing the safe and reliable operation of the network. The resiliency to the line faults is of considerable significance to the power transmission. This paper proposes a fault property identification strategy based on the Pearson correlation coefficient for the LCC-MMC hybrid HVDC system which can differentiate temporary and permanent faults. To achieve this, a voltage signal is injected into the faulty line by decreasing the firing angles of the LCC-based rectifier. Based on the established OHLs model and the injected signal, an estimated backward travelling wave can be accurately calculated. The fault property is identified by comparing the wave difference of the real backward travelling wave and the estimated backward travelling wave. The proposed strategy has a high accuracy since all influencing factors including the fault resistance, fault distance, and line parameters have been taken into account. Finally, to verify the efficacy of the proposed algorithm, several simulations have been performed using PSCAD/EMTDC. To improve the reliability of power supply, reclosing schemes are required after transient faults, which commonly occur in overhead line based high voltage DC (HVDC) systems. However, in the event of permanent faults, the auto-reclosing scheme may cause a severe strike. To avoid the severe impacts caused by permanent faults, the fault type should be discriminated before activating the reclosing scheme. Therefore, an adaptive reclosing scheme based on phase characteristics is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the modulation of a periodic voltage by actively controlling the hybrid DC circuit breaker (DCCB) is introduced. Then, a cascaded π equivalent model and its decoupling algorithm are presented to analyze the frequency-domain characteristics of the measured impedance of the coupled overhead lines. From the frequency-domain characteristics, the frequency of the periodic detecting voltage is determined to analyze the phase features of the measured impedance at primary frequency. The permanent or transient faults can thus be accurately identified by using these different phase characteristics, with negligible influence on the healthy lines. Line-commutated converters are extensively used as the interface between ac grids and classic HVDC systems. At the inverter side, commutation failure of switches is one of the most common faults that can pose threats to the system operation. Practical and reliable study of such phenomena relies on accurate and efficient converter models for simulations. Recently, a parametric average-value model (PAVM) has been presented for ac–dc rectifiers, which considers the internal faults of the converter. In this paper, the PAVM methodology is extended to the dc–ac inverter systems, including the commutation failure of switches. The proposed PAVM also augments an automatic fault detection technique to determine the faulty switches. Using comprehensive simulation studies, the developed model is verified to accurately predict the commutation failure of switches and reconstruct the waveforms consistent with the detailed switching models of inverters while being computationally more efficient. The strength concept is an important tool for voltage stability evaluation of emerging hierarchical-infeed LCC-UHVDC (HIDC) systems. However, the complex inter-inverter interactions in such systems have caused significant difficulties for the strength assessment. This makes the accuracy of earlier strength assessment indices limited due to empirical analysis rather than rigorous theoretical reasoning. Thus in this paper, the hierarchical-infeed voltage interaction factor (HVIF) index is firstly utilized to quantitatively depict the complex inter-inverter interactions in HIDC systems. The use of the HVIF enables these interactions to be effectively incorporated into the subsequent strength assessment by proposing the hierarchical-infeed interactive effective short-circuit ratio (HIESCR) strength index. The critical HIESCR (CHIESCR) defined to delineate the voltage stability limit also evaluates to consistently 1.0 such that the distance between the HIESCR and CHIESCR is naturally an accurate stability margin. Since the HIESCR is developed based on the rigorous theoretical reasoning, it is more accurate than earlier indices for voltage stability evaluation. Moreover, the parametric dependence analysis of the HIESCR versus various system parameters and rated operation variables is conducted. This offers a comprehensive perspective for better understanding of the strength variation characteristics. Finally, case study in the modified IEEE 118-bus system validates the HIESCR. In this paper, a reliable methodology is proposed in order to implement and validate a Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme on an actual Voltage Source Converter (VSC) integrated in a scale-down multi-terminal DC grid. The objective of the investigated MPC controller is to enable AC frequency support among two asynchronous AC areas through a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grid, while considering physical constraints, such as maximum and minimum DC voltage. A systematic and accurate implementation strategy is proposed, based mainly on the Hardware In the Loop (HIL) and Power Hardware In the Loop (PHIL), leading to the real-life testing on VSC, controlled by a classical microcontroller. The technical problems during the implementation process, as well as the proposed solutions, are described in detail through this paper. Penetration of DC networks is rapidly increasing in modern power systems. As transient behavior of DC grids is different from that of AC ones, AC grid protection schemes might not be applicable to protect DC networks. Exact fault location is vital for protection of DC networks to reduce repair cost and achieve fast power recovery. This paper proposes a novel topology independent multi-terminal DC scheme to identify fault section and location for DC transmission systems. Voltage and current signals measured at the terminals are analyzed by the least squares error (LSE) algorithm. Then, the proposed scheme uses low frequency components of the signals to locate DC faults offline. Unlike some other methods, it does not require sophisticated sensors and hardware to capture very high frequency content of the signals. Hence, the proposed scheme can be implemented in practice without additional measuring infrastructure. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated under various fault conditions for different topologies of DC networks in both overhead lines and cables. Numerous simulations carried out demonstrate that the proposed scheme is quite accurate and provides excellent performance under different fault resistances, sections, and locations. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have been recognized as the most attractive technology for high voltage direct current (HVDC) applications during the last years. Their advantages include the ability to freely control the internally stored energy in the distributed submodules (SMs) and to independently control AC and DC powers. Recent studies showed that an MMC can take advantage of this degree of freedom to supply ancillary services with low energy requirements such as frequency response or power oscillation damping by connecting energy storage systems (ESSs) to its SM capacitors. This paper proposes a modular DC-DC converter as an interface between the energy storage element and the SM capacitor. As it can be built with switches allowing a high switching frequency, it is shown that the volume of the passive components can be reduced in comparison with interface converters known in the literature. The proposed control strategy avoids to transfer the harmonics of a SM to the ESS that prevents to drastically oversize the system. The proposed control method also provides an appropriate energy exchange without affecting the control philosophy of an MMC and it addresses balancing issues. This paper introduces an averaging control strategy of the phase-unit losses of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). The quantitative analysis of the MMC phase-unit loss distribution under unbalanced ac conditions is carried out by investigating the individual component of the MMC arm currents. It shows that the unbalanced arm currents will result in unbalanced phase-unit losses. To address this issue, this paper proposes a predictive closed-loop-control-based zero-sequence voltage injection method that results in much averaged loss distribution under unbalanced ac conditions. The essence of the new method is that it adjusts the three-phase sinusoidal references so that the unbalanced arm currents are fully utilized to average phase-unit losses. A parallel hybrid modular multilevel converter (PHMMC) belongs to the class of modular multilevel converters, which have become potential candidates for high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission systems. Due to the circuit topology of a PHMMC, the dc bus voltage contains low-order harmonics and cannot be fully regulated at a constant dc voltage. The dc bus voltage, if not properly controlled, leads to improper power transfer and increases the magnitude of dc current ripple on the dc transmission line. This paper proposes a zero-sequence voltage injection (ZSVI)-based model predictive control (MPC) strategy to control the dc current/power flow and simultaneously minimize the dc current ripple. The proposed strategy takes advantage of a cost function minimization technique to determine and inject the optimal zero-sequence voltage components into the dc- bus voltage of a PHMMC system. This paper derives a discrete-time dynamic model of the dc transmission-line current and, correspondingly, develops a predictive model. The predictive model is used to inject the appropriate amount of zero-sequence voltage components to the dc bus reference voltage waveform. Compared with the existing triplen harmonics injection method, the proposed ZSVI-MPC strategy improves the performance of a PHMMC system in terms of minimization of the dc current/voltage ripple. Performance of the proposed strategy for a 21-level PHMMC-based HVDC station system is evaluated based on time-domain simulation studies in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment. The reported results demonstrate superior performance of the PHMMC-HVDC station operating based on the proposed ZSVI-MPC strategy, under various operating conditions, as opposed to the existing triplen harmonics injection method. Modular multilevel converters (MMC) are presently the converter topology of choice for voltage-source converter high-voltage direct-current (VSC-HVDC) transmission schemes due to their very high efficiency. These converters are complex, yet fast and detailed electromagnetic transients simulation models are necessary for the research and development of these transmission schemes. Excellent work has been done in this area, though little objective comparison of the models proposed has yet been undertaken. This paper compares for the first time, the three leading techniques for producing detailed MMC VSC-HVDC models in terms of their accuracy and simulation speed for several typical simulation cases. In addition, an improved model is proposed which further improves the computational efficiency of one method. Various options for dc grid protection strategies are currently investigated which differ in terms of speed and selectivity. In order to compare these options fairly, the impact on the connected ac grid needs to be studied. This paper analyzes the ac grid impact in terms of frequency stability and calculates the reserve capacity necessary to retain the stability. Assuming fast frequency reserves as a possible mitigation, a probabilistic method is provided to determine a trade-off between under frequency load shedding and additional reserve requirement. In general, non-selective strategies require higher and faster reserves compared to their fully selective counterparts for both cases analyzed in this paper. Both the selectivity and the speed of protection have an influence on the reserve requirement. The dc grid topology also plays an important role in the reserve sizing by determining the impact of dc contingencies on the ac grid. The concept of reserve sizing based on temporary loss of supply shows value in terms of lower capacity requirement. The paper presents a fault tolerant scheme for integrating renewable energy sources to HVDC system using a new modular resonant DC-DC converter. The proposed DC-DC converter consists of many identical low voltage submodules which consist of two controllable switches, one diode and a capacitor. The switches of the proposed DC-DC converter are configured to provide the converter an inherent fault tolerant feature which enables it to isolate itself during DC faults in the HVDC system. Zero current switching (ZCS) is also achieved for all the switches used in the converter. The paper focusses on the integration of renewable energy sources to HVDC transmission system using the proposed tapping scheme. The performance of the proposed scheme to evacuate power from renewable energy sources to HVDC transmission system has been demonstrated using simulation studies done in PSCAD/EMTDC. The new characteristics and phenomena of hybrid AC/DC transmission grids challenge the conventional protection concepts. In hybrid AC/DC overhead line systems, AC and DC systems are located on the same support structure. As a result, electromagnetic and galvanic interactions between the AC- and the DC-line influence the AC-protection and the DC-control in a novel and complex way. This paper presents key findings and solutions from a current 400-kV-hybrid AC/DC overhead line project in Germany. The focus is on AC/DC intersystem faults, i.e. galvanic contact between DC and AC systems. Fault detection and fault response of the AC-protection and the DC-control as well as a proper AC/DC protection coordination are discussed. The paper illustrates the challenges of a secure and dependable fault clearing and indicates solution methods. The findings of this paper are based on EMT simulations with detailed PSCAD-models of the hybrid AC/DC overhead line and the VSC-converters. One of the most critical faults affecting modular multilevel converter (MMC) based bipolar high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission systems is the single-phase-to-ground (SPG) faults between the converter transformer and the valve. However, half-bridge (HB) and full-bridge (FB) based MMCs exhibit a different behavior following such a fault and, thus, converter protection should be addressed in a different manner for each configuration. For HB-MMCs, an SPG fault at the valve-side leads to a severe overvoltage on the submodule (SM) capacitors in the converter upper arms and to grid-side non-zero crossing currents. Although FB-MMCs only exhibit overvoltage, these are more severe than for their HB counterparts. To address this problem, this paper presents a protection strategy considering thyristor bypass branches placed in parallel with upper arms of FB-MMCs. By employing this configuration, the upper arm overvoltage in the faulted converter is mitigated and remote converters can be quickly blocked using their local protection schemes. For completeness, the effectiveness of the strategy is verified through time-domain simulations in PSCAD/ EMTDC. This paper proposes a secondary Model Predictive Control (MPC) based architecture to provide DC voltage and DC power control to MT VSC-HVDC networks interfacing wind power generation. The proposed architecture places the controller at a supervisory level, thus providing coordination amongst existing converters’ local droop controllers. Droop control is a type of decentralized DC voltage/power control. Hence, in case of secondary controller failure, droop control acts as a contingency control scheme. A simplified linear dynamic model of the MT VSC-HVDC network is utilised for the MPC's design, thus minimizing computational effort needed to compute secondary control action. Updates of droop gains and offshore and onshore “AC” variables, in the dq domain, are explicitly considered as measured input disturbances within the formulation of the MPC controller, thus, ensuring appropriate control response in order to minimise adverse impact of their variation on the overall system's performance, particularly under wind power variations. Simulation results show that MPC, whose design is based on the system's simplified linear model, is capable of delivering satisfactory performance when applied to the high fidelity non-linear full order model of a six-terminal VSC-HVDC network simulated in PSCAD. In this paper, a 3-dimensional method of characteristics is used to calculate the ion flow field around a metal building in the vicinity of bipolar HVDC transmission lines. The surface charges are introduced to make sure that the surface of the metal building is equipotential. An improved iterative method is proposed to solve the ion flow field. A reduced-scale test under laboratory conditions is carried out to verify the calculation results. Comparison of the results with those by Deutsch Assumption shows that although the two groups of results on the ground are in good agreement, the electric fields in space are different because the method of characteristics considers the effect of space charges on the direction of the electric field. Modern power systems face several problems at frequencies above the range of traditional stability studies due to the increasing penetration of power electronic devices. This phenomenon has been recently referred to as electromagnetic transient stability and is a growing issue in systems with power electronic converters at any power and voltage level, such as FACTS, high-voltage DC, interfaces for grid connection of renewable energies, custom power devices for power quality enhancement, among others. The study of power systems stability is usually carried out by simulation tools that represent the power system through phasor models. However, due to the faster dynamics of modern systems, the harmonic interaction among the controllers, converters, and electric power components, recent research results suggest that some stability analyses should be conducted with models suitable for wider frequency ranges, e.g., electromagnetic transient models. An increasing number of offshore wind farms are connected to the public grid with large-scale HVDC links. The electrical transients caused by the energization of the export transformers appear more significant in the converter-driven offshore AC grid with low short-circuit power, than in direct AC grid connections. This may lead to a violation of the 2% voltage dip criterion, thus seriously affecting the production of neighboring wind farms. Additionally, the transformer and the entire insulation system are exposed to mechanical and dielectric stress. This paper investigates the influence of three factors, namely excitation, switching angle, and remnant core magnetization, onto the inrush current. Electromagnetic transient simulations and field measurements show that with a smart use of the on load tap changer, point on wave switching, and a demagnetization of the core by a cable-shunt swing circuit, the three factors above can be used as degrees-of-freedom to effectively mitigate the inrush current phenomenon. In order to strengthen the onshore transmission network in many parts of the world, voltage-source current–high-voltage direct current (VSC–HVDC) will increasingly be utilized. The effect of the operating point of a VSC-HVDC link and the control strategies employed can substantially affect the electromechanical oscillatory behavior of the ac network as well as the dc-side dynamics. In order for the full, flexible capability of VSC-HVDC to be exploited, further study of the effects of these controllers and their interactions with ac system responses is necessary. This paper addresses this gap. Both modal analysis and transient stability analysis are used to highlight tradeoffs between candidate VSC-HVDC power controllers and to study the electromechanical performance of the integrated ac/dc model. Future power systems will contain more converter-based generation, among which are the voltage-source converter–high-voltage direct-current (VSC-HVDC)-connected offshore wind power plants (WPP). Their interaction with the onshore system influences power system dynamics in the transient stability timeframe. The respective protection and control methods which cause this interaction must be taken into account in grid-integration studies performed today. This paper gives insight into the effect of typically required fault ridethrough (FRT) and post-FRT measures of VSC-HVDC-connected offshore WPPs on the combined ac and HVDC system dynamics. Several important sensitivities are addressed, among which are: 1) FRT implementation, 2) the postfault active power-recovery rates, 3) the ac network dynamic characteristics, and 4) the HVDC topology. The analysis is first performed as a proof of concept on a small benchmark system, and subsequently generalized to a realistic dynamic model of the future Northwestern European power system. The results of this paper can be used as a reference for understanding the effects of large-scale VSC-HVDC-connected offshore WPPs on the stability of the onshore interconnected power systems. The fast dc line protection is one of the key techniques for the multi-terminal flexible dc grid whose main technical difficulty lies in quick and reliable fault identification. The traditional protection principles for the ac system are not suitable for the flexible dc grid, and those for the conventional dc transmission system can also not be applied directly. Therefore, the frequency-domain traveling-wave boundary characteristics after faults are analyzed first in this paper to find the critical condition for distinguishing the internal and external faults as well as the forward and backward faults. And then, a novel single-ended transient-voltage-based protection strategy for flexible dc grid was proposed, which mainly consists of the fault identification criterion and the direction criterion. The protection scheme used wavelet transform to extract transient voltage energy. In order to eliminate the influences of the wavelet transform boundary effect and converter blocking, the principle to select the proper data window was proposed. Compared with the existing traveling-wave-based dc protection, the proposed method has a higher reliability and stronger ability to endure high transition resistance, which was verified by lots of simulation cases based on the PSCAD/EMTDC. This paper presents the design and application of a recently developed damped high-pass (DHP) filter for the line-commuted converter HVDC terminals. The DHP filter can damp resonance at the noncharacteristic harmonic frequencies commonly encountered by multipulse HVDC links. A design method is developed to address two unique issues faced by HVDC filter design: a wide range of system impedances seen by a HVDC terminal and a variable reactive compensation configuration at the terminal. Both are challenging filter design problems even for traditional filter banks. Using realistic industry case and sensitivity studies, this paper has shown that the proposed filtering scheme and design method can result in saving in filter costs and space requirements without sacrificing performance in comparison with the common filtering schemes used at HVDC terminals. The development of voltage-source-converter (VSC)-based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems has increased significantly. However, the implementation of VSC-HVDC systems is limited for lacking fast, low-loss, and reliable circuit breakers. Hybrid dc circuit breakers (DCCBs) may help to improve this situation. In this paper, an efficient modular multilevel converter (MMC) HVDC system model based on the Zhangbei–Beijing \pm \text500\,\textkV bipolar MMC-HVDC transmission (overhead line) project is first established. Then, the system transient characteristics are investigated involving permanent line-to-ground faults (LGFs), permanent short-circuit faults (SCFs), temporary LGFs, and temporary SCFs with either ac circuit breakers (ACCBs) or DCCBs in service. Finally, the performances, including the fault clearance and recovery, comparison of DCCBs with two different breaking methods, and comparison of ACCBs and DCCBs, in the MMC-HVDC system are presented. This paper provides a deep understanding of LGF and SCF in the MMC-HVDC systems, operation of DCCB, and comparison of faults clearance and recovery under these faults conditions using ACCB and DCCB, respectively. This paper investigates the stability of diode rectifier based HVDC (DR-HVDC) connected offshore wind farms. The impedance model of the DR-HVDC connected offshore wind farms in dq frame is analytically developed and is validated by comparing its impedances to those obtained from frequency scanning of time domain EMT model in PSCAD/EMTDC. Based on the impedance model, the impacts of the sizes of DR-HVDC DC smoothing reactors and AC filters on offshore system stability are analyzed. It shows reduced DC smoothing reactance degrades the d-axis stability margin and can potentially lead to system instability. Higher bandwidth of offshore AC voltage control of wind turbine line side converter is proposed to minimize such instability potential. The analysis also shows that reduced AC filters size helps to increase q-axis stability margin and leads to a more stable system. Moreover, stability analysis considering the interaction between WTs is conducted and it reveals that the WT P-V control has a significant impact on the stability of the DR-HVDC connected WTs. Offshore wind farms (OWF) are being rapidly integrated to the power systems, which can be primarily attributed to saturation of the mainland onshore area, and high wind speed in offshore sites. However, to maintain stable grid operation, OWFs are required to comply with Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) capability. OWF during LVRT period should not only stay grid connected, but also support the grid during the disturbance. In this paper, a new communication-independent LVRT control scheme for HVDC connected OWF has been proposed. Under the proposed strategy, OWFs not only successfully ride through a fault induced voltage dip, but also comply with active power recovery ramp rate during the fault recovery period. Besides complying with LVRT requirement and ramp rate limit, the proposed strategy improves voltage dip induced frequency (VDIF) issue by increasing active power injection from the OWF during LVRT period. The proposed LVRT strategy also exploits the stored energy in HVDC link capacitors in order to reduce the impact of VDIF issue. In High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grids, system parameter and/or topology changes following HVDC grid protection actions affect system dynamics and in combination with the existence of line inductors in series with HVDC circuit breakers (DCCB), pose a challenge to designing converter controls that satisfy desired performance and stability requirements. To date, several methods have been proposed for evaluating the influence of the line inductors on system stability; however, tuning of the MMC controls considering system parameter and/or topology changes following HVDC grid protection actions haven’t been studied in detail. This paper presents a systematic tuning procedure for a robust operation of MMCs in any HVDC grid configuration. The proposed method analyzes the impact of variations in HVDC grid system parameters and control bandwidths (BWs) using small-signal based stability analysis and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD)-based performance analysis methods. In addition, it considers the impact of line outages associated with HVDC grid protection actions in order to select optimal control gains that fulfill performance and stability requirements of the HVDC grid for given HVDC Circuit Breakers (DCCBs) line inductor values. The high-frequency resonances (HFRs) around 700 Hz and 1.8 kHz have occurred in Yu′E project. Mechanism studies indicate that HFRs are caused by the interactions between the negative damping inductance characteristics of the MMC and the capacitive characteristics of the AC system. In this paper, two optimized methods regarding the current control loop are presented to suppress the HFRs. The first one is to use a round(x) function inserted into voltage feed-forward loop instead of low pass filter (LPF). The proposed method has less negative impact on transient characteristics of an MMC. The second one is to employ a second-order damping controller, including the parameters design, to reshape the MMC impedance around the multiple risky regions. The core of HFRs suppression is that the real part of the MMC impedance near the multiple intersection frequencies should be positive according to impedance stability theory. Combined with the proposed control methods and core of HFRs suppression, the simplified model of MMC is adopted to design the parameters using the analytical expressions. In a previous paper (Part 1) the authors have performed the simulative evaluation of the life lost by HVDC extruded cables subjected to long TOVs occurring in VSC HVDC cable systems. The conclusions were that it cannot be completely ruled out that the field levels and the duration of such TOVs are a potential threat to certain cable designs, and tests other than Load Cycling Type Tests after CIGRÉ Technical Brochure 496 could assess quantitatively the potential threat associated with long TOVs. For these reasons, in this Part 2 superimposed switching impulses applied during Type Tests after TB 496 are analyzed in order to check if such impulses might be equivalent to long TOVs as for their electro-thermal stress effects on extruded insulation. The analysis is similar to that carried out for long TOVs in Part 1, i.e., it consists of: calculating the electric field during superimposed switching impulses; comparing it with the field during long TOVs; calculating with Miner's law of cumulated damage the life lost during superimposed switching impulses and comparing it with the loss of life during TOVs. This paper analyzes high-frequency interactions between a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grid resonances by studying their effect on the system stability. The recent appearance of converter-related instabilities due to high-frequency oscillations at the converter's ac side raises concerns about whether similar interactions can also take place at its dc side. To determine the risks imposed by such interactions within an HVDC grid, this paper assesses the impact of the MMC internal dynamics and dc system resonances on the stability using an analytical impedance-based method. The effect of fault current-limiting inductors, grid topology changes and transmission line length is investigated, indicating that these parameters considerably influence the electromagnetic characteristics of the HVDC grid and consequently the system stability. The design distance of offshore wind power plants connected through HVAC transmission systems might be extended due to the introduction of mid-cable reactors for reactive power compensation purposes and the latest developments of AC cables for higher voltages. Therefore, the applicability limits between HVAC and HVDC systems must be revised. This paper analyzes the contribution that mid-cable reactive power compensation has on increasing the distance limits of HVAC transmission systems. A methodology is developed to determine an optimal design of such transmission systems. In this methodology, cost of power losses and reactors are minimized for multiple wind speed conditions. As a result, the optimal HVAC voltage level and the optimal number of reactors and their location are determined for different OWPP rated powers and distances. Hopf bifurcation phenomenon of a power system results in oscillatory dynamics which can lead to instabilities in the system. Therefore, it is desirable to operate the system such that a sufficient margin to Hopf bifurcation is ensured. This paper presents a methodology based on the adjustment of the setpoint values of the HVDC link controllers, to prevent instability or increase the stability margin of the system subject to Hopf bifurcation. In this paper, the first-order sensitivities of the Hopf stability margin to the setpoint values of the HVDC links are presented. These sensitivities identify the optimum direction to change the HVDC setpoints to steer the system away from instability, increase the stability margin, and improve the damping of oscillatory modes. The proposed method is evaluated on various system configurations subject to Hopf bifurcation phenomena caused by a variety of events, such as load and line impedance variations.
