Traction transformers are one of the most important equipment in the traction power supply system. Thermal aging of transformer insulation system determines its reliable life. To achieve an estimation of the insulation life of traction power transformers operated under real load condition, the effects of traction loads on the thermal aging of oil-paper insulation in traction transformers were investigated. First, the design principles for the accelerated thermal aging experiment were studied and proposed by considering magnitude (i.e., load rate) and frequency (i.e. spare time and lasting time) of the traction load. Then, an experimental system was established in the laboratory to conduct extensive accelerated thermal aging experiments, in which the traction loads were mimicked by using positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heating plates and a programmable logic controller (PLC). Finally, the experimental results were analyzed and discussed to reveal the effects of traction load on the thermal aging of oil-paper insulation in traction transformers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Frequent failures of transition joints were reported mainly near to the crutch area of the paper insulated cable side of the joints. In this paper, the authors present an estimation of the electric field and temperature distribution in the paper insulated cable side of a transition joint using simulations based on finite element method for 3-D geometry, which, apparently did not get much attention until now. It is found that non-linearities in material properties result in drastic changes in the distribution of electric field. The results indicate electric field enhancement near crutch area. The effect of varying load current, and ambient temperature on the peak electric field has been investigated. The simulations are validated analytically. One of the issues faced by asset managers in the electric power industry is the condition and remaining life assessment of the high voltage (HV) assets. In contrast to other power equipment, transmission power cables are mainly subjected to corrective maintenance. To support the asset management of service aged transmission power cable circuits, this paper discusses an approach of integrated knowledge rules for condition-based maintenance based on laboratory investigations and field examples. There are very few recent publications on this subject in spite of aging power cable infrastructure; therefore, this paper aims at showing practical applications of condition-based maintenance of this important component of the transmission and distribution systems. The simulation of electric field transients in HVDC cables can be a fundamental tool to support insulation system design when operation dynamics, which includes voltage polarity inversions and load variation, becomes significant during the expected cable life. The field behavior during voltage and temperature transients is associated with intrinsic and extrinsic ageing processes that can affect the cable design life. Traditional models employed for electric field simulations consider only the non–linear, steady–state dependence of conductivity on temperature and field magnitude, but they neglect the transient behavior of permittivity and conductivity, that is, polarization and charge trapping phenomena. These processes impact on the duration of the field transient and thus ageing. This paper discusses the numerical implementation of an electro–quasistatic model that can be used to perform transient simulations of electric fields in HVDC cables insulation. With respect to the model traditionally employed, the presented one is extended with Debye's equations for dielectric polarization processes. The model is implemented numerically using finite differences, or the Occhini equivalent circuit: this paper demonstrates that the two approaches are equivalent. Fast and accurate power-flow methods are of great importance, especially in near real-time optimal operation of power systems. This importance will be even more highlighted in the presence of more repetitions of power-flow calculations, which cause more computational complexities in optimization problems. As a solution, in this paper, a novel fast and accurate approach of linear power-flow formulation is proposed. Principles of the proposed approach are based on dividing power-flow calculations into base and variable parts. To this aim, at first, system modeling of base and variable parts are presented. For the base-part modeling, utilizing a nonlinear power-flow, an accurate base power-flow (BPF) is extracted. Afterwards, by linearizing the power system around the BPF, variable-part model which is the result of a linear fitting process, is obtained. Then, it is shown that the variable-part of the operating point is always a function of the obtained base-part and variable-part models. In this paper, by focusing on the stochastic application of the proposed approach, different uncertainties in a distribution system are considered. Finally, numerical results carried out in the Matlab environment, for a IEEE 34-bus standard distribution system and then a 1486-bus case study, verify the performance of the proposed approach. As is known, cable plays a significant role in electric power transmission of the ship. From the safety perspective, this paper aims to predict the ship cable life more accurately and analyze its reliability under small sample conditions. To achieve this goal, based on the non-equidistant grey model (NEGM (1, 1)), an optimized equal-dimension dynamic NEGM (1, 1) is proposed in this paper. In the improved model, the raw data smoothness and the background value are optimized to apply to grey model parameters. Equal-dimension dynamic prediction algorithm (EDDPA) is adopted to predict the lifetime of ship CXF type cable. Compared with the aging model from literature and NEGM (1, 1), the prediction effectiveness and reliability of the proposed model are more considerable. Interestingly, with the increase of recurrence times, the numerical results show this model has higher prediction performance. This paper is devoted to electric arc furnace (EAF) modeling using a random differential equation based on the power balance equation. The proposed approach broadens and improves the model through the introduction of stochastic processes in place of existing coefficients. The paper presents a method which enables the estimation of EAF model coefficients with the help of measurement data - voltage and current waveforms recorded during the melting stage of an EAF work cycle. The estimation process is conducted with a Monte Carlo method and genetic algorithm, which is applied iteratively to each of the defined frames of the input signal. The estimated coefficients have been analyzed with respect to their time variability as well as the probability distributions of their values and increments. The results have been extensively visualized. Next, the identification of the stochastic processes representing the model coefficients has been carried out. Based on the previous results and autocorrelation functions, the density functions and parameters of discrete-time stochastic processes were identified. Voltage rise caused by high levels of distributed generation is manifesting as voltage regulation challenges for many electricity network service providers. In this environment it would be ideal to reduce supply voltage magnitudes, however, many network operators are hesitant to do so due to concerns related to consumer appliance performance at reduced supply voltage magnitudes. Voltage regulation requirements are defined by network standards and network service providers must ensure voltages remain within specified limits. Through an evaluation of domestic appliance performance when supplied at various voltage magnitudes, this paper examines the impact of varying voltage levels on residential appliances. Equipment energy demand, operation and actuation were monitored for each applied voltage magnitude. While no equipment failures were recorded, appliance behaviour varied significantly with applied voltage magnitude. Individual appliance conservation voltage reduction (CVR) factors have also been established. The results highlight the importance of good voltage regulation and provide substantiated appliance performance figures for future studies. The outcomes of this paper allow electricity network service providers to understand the implications of supply voltage magnitude on domestic appliance performance, whether it be understating of the impact of higher voltage magnitudes caused by distributed generation or implications of reducing voltage magnitudes to provide headroom for distributed generation integration. Modern electric grid usages extensive non-linear loads leading to the increased harmonic current injection in the system. This paper proposes a data-driven algorithm based on a sparse decomposition approach with the Overcomplete Hybrid Dictionary (OHD) and provides in-depth mathematical analysis to detect and mitigate harmonics in emerging electric power systems. The sparse decomposition method is widely used in image processing applications with significant advantages to big-data applications. However, its application is not properly addressed in electric grids’ applications despite massive data generation in a smart grid environment. Hence, in this paper, the performance evaluation of a sparse decomposition-based algorithm using a greedy approach is proposed and carried out in a real-time simulation environment for Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) application for the real-time detection, classification, and mitigation of PQ events to show its suitability and effectiveness. Finally, the experimental results on a small-scale laboratory setup are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed sparse-based control algorithm for DSTATCOM in real-time applications. The comparative result shows that the proposed sparse-based method is advantageous for off-line PQ signal processing and capable of real-time detection, classification, and control of the power apparatus for harmonics mitigation. In this paper, the initial stage and the return stroke current waveform parameters of rocket-triggered lightning flashes to the ground and to the distribution line have been analyzed. The results show that the average current, the charge transferred and the action integral associated with the Initial Stage with return strokes are greater than the corresponding values without return strokes. For the initial stage, the presence of the distribution line greatly reduces the maximum current, average current, charge transfer, and action integral by a factor of 0.35, 0.42, 0.51, and 0.19, respectively. For the return stroke, the presence of the distribution line has little effect on the other parameters except for a 2.4-fold increase in the 10-90% risetime. The presence of the distribution line affects the initial stage parameters more significantly than the return stroke parameters, probably because the lightning channel equivalent impedance of the initial stage is much smaller than that of the return stroke. The lightning channel equivalent impedance of the initial stage estimated in this paper is about 145 ohms and the estimated lightning channel equivalent impedance for the return stroke is greater than 2000 ohms. Negative-sequence current is required to be intentionally injected to support the power grid or compensate the imbalanced load in asymmetrical faults utilizing STATCOM. However, the extreme compensation range of negative-sequence current injection becomes complicated when grid voltage becomes asymmetrical. This article presents a novel off-line strategy for negative-sequence current compensation under two typical kinds of asymmetrical grid faults — single-phase voltage drop and double-phase voltage drop, with the following two benefits simultaneously: maximizing negative current compensation capacity; avoiding iterations and reducing computation burdens. In this paper, the mechanism of DC voltage balancing among three phases in STATCOM is analyzed and a new identification method of negative-sequence current compensation range is explored out. To simplify the calculation, this paper takes the ratio of negative-sequence reactive (Iq-) and active (Id-) current as a variable (s). In this way, the relationship between the extreme compensation range, asymmetrical voltage sag depth of power grid h is drawn with MATLAB. Different from the previous iterative method, the off-line identification method is applied to avoid huge iterations. By fitting the curve, the precise ranges of negative-sequence current compensation under different asymmetrical grid faults are approximated as simple polynomials, thus significantly reducing the computation burdens. The opening up of the railway to competition in Europe has been accompanied by many technical challenges never before seen in the railway field. One of these challenges concerns precise energy metering. As European railways have been a monopoly until now, the current systems can only measure the energy consumption of a single operator. In accordance with European law, the installation of an energy meter has been mandatory in new or refurbished rolling stocks since 2014. Nevertheless, these energy meters are still not fully reliable, with misreadings and missing readings being common occurrences. To address the problem of energy metering data reliability, this paper presents a method for validating the reading measurement based on a physical model and validates it in two different case studies. For the issue of energy metering data availability, different estimators are developed, and their performance are shown with the aim of calculating the missing consumptions for both case studies. Analogous to the way a good driver is aware of neighboring cars, electrical loads can coordinate with other loads within a building or section of a distribution grid. This paper develops methods that enable groups of cyclic loads (devices that turn on and off periodically to maintain setpoints) to reduce their peak aggregate power demand. The methods accommodate a wide variety of cyclic loads, including those with nonlinear or unknown dynamics, and can be implemented in a fully distributed fashion. This paper targets settings with a few hundred cyclic loads or fewer, where the methods developed here could reduce demand peaks significantly while maintaining or improving quality of service. In recent years, there is an increased use of passive filters in both transmission and distribution systems due to the proliferation of power electronic devices. However, the problem of filter design has not been well addressed in the past and one example is the application of high-pass filters in a filter package. Three types of HP filters are widely used to mitigate multiple harmonics, i.e., 2nd HP filter, 3rd HP filter and C-type filter. There is still a lack of research to clearly reveal the characteristics of each filter, which makes it difficult for the designer to select the optimal filter topology under different circumstances. The main goal of this paper is to solve the problem of how to select a proper configuration among three HP filter candidates for a given harmonic problem. Unlike the conventional optimization-based filter studies, this paper investigates three HP filters in an analytical way. As a result, the paper provides a deep insight into the inherent characteristics of the filter and the conclusions drawn in the paper are universal; thus can be used in different applications, ranging from low voltage levels to high voltage levels. The research results lead to a recommended application scope of each HP filter, which is very useful to guide the design of filter packages and help designers to evaluate the design results. This paper proposes an approach to mitigate adverse effects of the fault management of closed/ring grids with high shares of distributed generation (DG). The approach refers to conventional distance protection relays in particular. The rising share of DG, especially in distribution systems, can lead to overloadings and intolerable voltages. Closed-ring structures increase the grid capacity for DG due to more balanced load and voltages profiles. However, malfunctions of protection relays may occur because fault locating and selective fault clearing can be disturbed. This paper presents a distance protection algorithm for feeder relays that complies with the requirements of closed/ring grids with inter/infeeds. The proposed current comparison method (CCM) bases on the comparison of negative/sequence currents. It needs no voltage measurement and remains unaffected from inter/infeeds and fault resistances. Additionally, for relays located at the ring coupler, where the ring can be opened, a coupling relay method (CRM) is proposed. It locates unsymmetrical faults in closed/ring grids with inter/infeeds and enables fast and selective opening of the ring. This helps maintaining reliable power supply for customers in closed rings. Multiple strokes are the main factors affecting the safe and stable operation of power equipment. As the core lightning protection equipment, arresters are also frequently thermally collapsed due to multiple strokes. This paper investigates thermal effects of polymer-housed metal-oxide surge arrester (PMOSA) under multiple strokes. The comparative experiments of PMOSA lightning impulse are carried out through multiple strokes of experiment platform, including continuous lightning stroke and multiple strokes. Furthermore, the temperature distribution of the housing surface is obtained by infrared imager for thermal effect analysis. Subsequently, some typical DC parameters are tested to explore the association of impulse aging and thermal effects of the arrester under multiple strokes. Finally, a thermal-electric coupling model (TECM) is constructed to investigate the influence of some factors on the temperature of PMOSA from the perspective of materials and structure. The research in this paper can provide a theory reference and brief data support for improving the heat dissipation performance of arresters under multiple strokes based on structural optimization design and material modification. Multi-frequency (or harmonic) emissions and interactions are ongoing challenges for converter-dominated power systems. Consequently, multi-frequency models are introduced for power quality and harmonic stability studies. Rotor-Speed-Dependent (RSD) emissions from Type 3 Wind Turbines (WT) can lead to unexpected interactions. However, there are only a few specific studies on Type 3 WTs’ emissions. Besides, the provided analyses have been only based on field measurements. In this paper, the uncertainties of the field measurements are demonstrated experimentally. This paper provides an experimental analysis of emissions in different parts of a Type 3 WT, including stator, rotor, grid-side converter, and DC-link. In this way, theoretical emission patterns are formulated in sequence domain and verified by experimental measurements from a 2.2 MVA Type 3 WT tested by a 15 MVA grid emulator. The tests include emission measurements in different rotor speeds with identical output power set-point. To the best of our knowledge, the provided experiments are unique presentations from different parts of a Type 3 WT using MVA-scale torque and grid emulators. The test results provide a good impression of the existence, patterns, and amplitudes of the RSD emissions. Single horizontal and vertical grounding electrodes are often used for an earth connection of the lightning protection system. However, there are many practical situations when such electrodes have to be enhanced for better efficiency and replaced by multiple horizontal, vertical and/or inclined electrodes. This paper presents a systematic approach to evaluating and comparing the lightning performance of such grounding arrangements based on simple formulas. The contributions of this paper are: It is shown that impulse impedance Z may be derived from known formulas for low-frequency grounding resistance R; a new definition of effective length is introduced that allows for such a derivation; a collection of accurate formulas for R of all considered grounding electrode arrangements is presented; and a new concept of “effective volume” is described that enables a simple procedure to increase electrodes’ effective length. The new formulas for R, Z, and effective length of the different electrode arrangements allow an analysis that might help search for a choice of cost-effective configuration and dimensions of the grounding systems in the early design stage. Voltage source inverters (VSIs) with vector control based on phase-locked loop (PLL) suffer instability when connecting to a very weak AC grid (short circuit ratio (SCR) $ < $ 1.3). The conventional inductive grid impedance compensation for the PLL by virtually reducing the grid impedance can stabilize this connection. However, the analysis in this paper indicates that its stabilization effectiveness is sensitive to grid impedance variance and, indeed, overcompensation causes the PLL instability. Therefore, in this paper, an improved grid impedance compensation for the PLL is proposed to achieve the same stabilization for very-weak-grid connection and possess a good tolerance of grid impedance variance and overcompensation. A comprehensive small-signal model of the VSI using the proposed PLL’s grid impedance compensation is derived for stability analysis and parameter design. The time-domain simulation for this VSI is built to validate the stability analysis. Comparison studies for both proposed and conventional PLL’s grid impedance compensation are conducted including the stability effectiveness, VSI performance and grid impedance variance. Cable fault location is generally much more difficult if cable defect has not reached the level of serious breakdown. Traditional methods such as time domain reflectometry (TDR) and partial discharge detection cannot solve this problem well due to their low sensitivity. This paper proposes a new non-destructive detection method based on the impedance spectroscopy (IS), which can effectively locate soft faults in the cable. In this paper, a numerical model for cable with distributed parameters is established firstly. Based on this model, cable faults are extracted from the imaginary part of impedance spectrum with Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). The Chebyshev window is introduced to suppress interference and enhance signal-to-noise ratio, which improves the sensitivity and accuracy of fault location significantly. Experiments and simulations show that this method can well locate multi-segment defects in cables with good accuracy. The window function successfully amplifies the normalized amplitude of faults and improves the positioning accuracy. Compared with other method, this method reduces distortion points effectively. This paper addresses challenges with modeling of heat transfer phenomenon for cables in duct or pipes when applying a numerical solution. Heat transport mechanisms between the cable and pipe surfaces are conduction, convection and radiation. Numerical calculation of convection when applying a finite element analysis (FEA), or other numerical tools requires heavy computation power and great skills of the program operator. In general, this is the most difficult part when modeling the heat transfer between the cable and the pipe surfaces and practitioners are often forced to use simplifications or approximate models. This paper introduces a simplified model where the contribution from convection is replaced by a heat source at the pipe wall and a corresponding heat sink at the cable. The phenomenon of air rising vertically in the tube resulting in the upper half of the pipe being heated more by convection than the lower half is also modelled. The simplified model is compared to both known models from thermodynamics, FEA including convection and laboratory as well as the full-scale field measurements. The simplified model shows good correspondence to both simulations and measurements, with the temperatures deviating by less than 1 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an approach for the time domain statistical simulation of field-to-wire coupling model with uncertain wire position in traverse direction. The parameters of governing equations of field-to-wire coupling model about the wire position are expanded to the augmented governing equations by using the generalized polynomial chaos technique with normalized orthogonal basis functions. And the coefficients of the polynomial chaos expansions are solved by combining with the stochastic Galerkin method. However, the solution of augmented governing equations is a complex problem. Therefore, a new finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm based on the implicit Wendroff difference format is proposed to solve the governing equations, and the general iterative equations are given in this paper. The proposed methods are verified by a field-to-wire coupling model. The effectiveness and advantages of the new FDTD algorithm and the uncertainty analysis method based on generalized polynomial chaos technique are verified, which are achieved by comparing with the conventional leapfrog fashion FDTD algorithm and the Monte Carlo technique, respectively. Electrical utilities are continuously searching for new ways to cut costs and effectively increase the quality of service being supplied to their clients, which is closely related to the number of failures and the time it takes to locate and repair them. A helpful input for this continuing effort would be to have an estimate of the type of failure when it occurs. The analysis presented in this paper is part of an effort being carried out to estimate failure types based on an analysis of observable indirect variables. These indirect variables must be readily available after the failure detection, through a Smart Grid infrastructure, to enable a future application to carry out the estimation. This paper lays the groundwork on ambient and historical variables that display a relationship with various types of MV cable network failures. The paper presents relevant data and analyses the relationship between the various failure types and indirect variables, such as date and time, loading, historical data, daily rainfall, accumulated rainfall, dew point and ambient temperature. This paper proposes a systematic method for the identification of the load circuit parameters (say the $\boldsymbol{R}$ , $\boldsymbol{L}$ , and $\boldsymbol{C}$ elements) based only on the information of the instantaneous voltage and current measured at the point of common coupling (pcc). Geometric Algebra (GA) and concepts of differential geometry are used to produce a rigorous mathematical framework. The identification is formulated as a multidimensional geometrical problem that is solved conveniently by means of GA. Once the passive elements of the load have been identified, the active and reactive powers can be computed from first electromagnetic principles (Maxwell Equations). The theory is general and is verified with linear and nonlinear circuits. The paper shows single-phase circuits but the theory can be extended to three-phase circuits. The method is easy to program and has shown to be very robust for all tested cases. Because of its generality, the method presented will find applications beyond electric circuits. This paper presents the three-phase impulse overvoltage measured at the terminal of a 10 kV distribution line when the impulse current was injected into the phase conductor of the distribution line. The overvoltage observation station was installed at the terminal of the line to record the three-phase overvoltage waveforms. It is shown that the struck phase overvoltage consists of three components including the negative pulse, the stage of residual voltage maintenance and the overshoot oscillation part. The observed negative peak values of the struck phase overvoltage range from −85.4 kV to −96.0 kV in three different injected impulse levels at 90,120,150 kV charging voltage. The duration of residual voltage depends on the duration time of injected current. Furthermore, there is a strong positive relationship between the oscillation amplitude of the struck phase overvoltage and the injected current amplitude. The peak amplitudes of three-phase overvoltage always have the following magnitude relationship: struck phase C > induced phase B > induced phase A. The voltage coupling coefficients of induced phases will not exceed 0.4. The test method proposed in this paper will be helpful to the research on the lightning overvoltage response characteristics of the distribution line and the protection analysis of arresters. The paper addresses a real-time optimization-based reference calculation integrated with a control structure for Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) operating under normal and constrained situations (where it has reached current and/or voltage limitations, as it may occur during system faults). Firstly, a nonlinear optimization problem has been developed in which it prioritizes to satisfy the AC grid current set-points imposed by the transmission System Operator (TSO). The constrained nonlinear optimization problem is formulated based on the steady-state model of the MMC, whereby the prioritization is achieved through distinct weights defined in the Objective Function’s (OF) terms. The resultant optimization problem, however, is highly nonlinear requiring high computation burden to be solved in real-time. To cope with this issue, this paper applies a Linear Time-Varying (LTV) approximation, which permits to represent the nonlinear dynamics of the system as constant parameters, while a Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) system is used to formulate the optimization constraints. The converter’s current references are determined in real-time by solving a constrained linearized optimization problem at each control time step, which considers the TSO’s demands, the current MMC operating point and its physical limitations. Theoretical analyses comparing the responses of the linear and nonlinear optimization problems are performed to validate the accuracy of the LTV approximation. Finally, the linearized-optimization problem is integrated with the MMC controllers, evaluated under different AC and DC network conditions and compared with conventional control strategies, where it is shown that the presented method can be potentially employed to obtain the MMC current references for distinct network scenarios. Weather-related or other types of faults can negatively impact the continuity of the electricity delivery to the consumers and, thus, lead to poorer reliability scores. 90% of customer outage-minutes are due to events which affect local distribution systems. The radial configuration is simple and has a low cost design; however, when a fault occurs it often causes power outages beyond the location of the fault itself. Therefore, it is beneficial for utilities to automatically isolate the fault and, thus, restore power to as many consumers as possible. The benefits of fault isolation and service restoration include, but are not limited to: enhanced reliability and resiliency, reduced loss of revenue to the utility, and enhanced comfort and satisfaction for the utility’s consumers. This paper provides an algorithm to quickly isolate a fault and automatically restore power to as many nodes of the distribution system as possible by opening and closing switches already placed within the system. The expert model and centralized algorithm that are proposed in this paper guarantee an optimal solution and a short run-time regardless of the size of the distribution system. This paper proposes an adaptive self-tuned current controller design for an LCL-filtered LC-tuned single-phase shunt hybrid active power filter (HAPF), which offers adaptability and flexibility of the control system to filter parameters changes. System modelling and online identification of parameters are presented. Then, a systematic self-tuned controller (STC) design is proposed to calculate the controller parameters and obtain the final control law adaptively. The exact HAPF parameters design is described and the overall closed-loop stability evaluation with considering digital control delay is discussed in this paper. To confirm the theoretical achievements, simulations and experimental tests on a real prototype system are performed. The results are in good accordance and demonstrate the effectiveness and superior performance of the suggested control technique. The paper presents an experimental validation of a method to locate partial discharges (PDs) on power distribution and transmission networks. The method is based on electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) theory, and it uses a Transmission Line Matrix (TLM) model to describe the propagation of the PD signals in the reversed time. Since PDs are regarded as a symptom of insulation degradation, on-line PD location is considered an important approach to monitoring the integrity of a power distribution network, with the aim of detecting and preventing faults and improving network reliability. In this paper, the EMTR-based method is described and its effectiveness in PD localization using only one measurement point is demonstrated in three real 33 kV power lines. Its effectiveness is proved with and without an on-line electromagnetically noisy environment, and its accuracy is evaluated with respect to different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels of the networks. The validation shows that the method is able to locate PDs with an error of 0.14% with respect to the total length of the line in the absence of noise, and with an error that is always lower than 0.5% for an SNR down to −7 dB. This paper presents an online method to monitor the conditions of the substation grounding grid. The proposed method utilizes phase-to-ground faults occurring in downstream feeders as test current sources and the neutral of a specially selected feeder as the electrode for GPR (ground potential rise) measurement. The measured fault currents and GPRs are then used to estimate substation grounding grid impedance. The method, once established, can monitor the grounding grid impedance continuously and automatically, and the trend of the impedance change can be observed. As a result, the proposed method can yield much more reliable information on the substation grounding conditions. The method also overcomes many disadvantages of the offline methods. This paper presents extensive verification, sensitivity, and application studies for an online substation grounding grid condition monitoring method proposed in a companion paper. The studies are conducted using a realistic substation grounding grid and associated feeder configurations commonly encountered in North America. The verification studies confirm that the proposed method is able to estimate the substation grounding impedances with acceptable accuracy. Main factors impacting measurement accuracy are identified and quantified through sensitivity studies. The findings lead to a guide for the implementation and operation of the proposed method. This paper presents a novel methodology to estimate the saturation curve parameters of single-phase transformers, using minimum information from inrush and no-load tests. Only the value of the first current peak and the decay time are used from a unique inrush test, and only the third and fifth current harmonics from a unique no-load test. The proposed methodology is based on the existence of a signature for each transformer which can be easily obtained and characterize all possible inrush currents. This is the main contribution of the paper. Different transformers with different parameters have been tested in the laboratory. Experiments and simulations are carried out to validate the methodology. First, the respective no-load and inrush tests are made. Second, the parameters of each transformer are estimated. Third, the performance and accuracy of the proposed methodology are verified by a close agreement between the measured and the estimated saturation curves and between the simulated and the recorded inrush waveforms. Some remarkable advantages of the proposed methodology are: (a) considers the deep saturation, (b) avoids the need to know the residual flux (or to demagnetize the transformer) and the switching angle from the inrush test, and (c) it is computationally straightforward. In this paper, a reliable methodology is proposed in order to implement and validate a Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme on an actual Voltage Source Converter (VSC) integrated in a scale-down multi-terminal DC grid. The objective of the investigated MPC controller is to enable AC frequency support among two asynchronous AC areas through a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grid, while considering physical constraints, such as maximum and minimum DC voltage. A systematic and accurate implementation strategy is proposed, based mainly on the Hardware In the Loop (HIL) and Power Hardware In the Loop (PHIL), leading to the real-life testing on VSC, controlled by a classical microcontroller. Utilities prefer to perform a condition-based assessment of power transformer insulation in the least possible shutdown time. It is essential to estimate the values of various insulation condition sensitive performance parameters with higher accuracy. In the present work, a technique for the estimation of performance parameters, moisture content of paper, dissipation factor of the entire oil-paper insulation, paper conductivity, and activation energy is proposed. The evaluation of these parameters using reported techniques requires complete measurement of polarization and depolarization current profile, which requires around 20000 s of measurement time. The present method uses a forecasted polarization current profile obtained from 600 s of measured polarization current data. Detrended Fluctuation Analysis is applied to the forecasted polarization current data obtained from various in-service power transformers to obtain a suitable parameter. It is shown that this parameter maintains well-defined relationships with parameters; moisture content of paper, dissipation factor of oil-paper insulation, paper conductivity, and activation energy. The proposed technique is beneficial for utilities as it eliminates the requirement of measuring depolarization current and return voltage measurement for estimating activation energy. This paper proposes a novel hybrid AC/DC microgrid architecture incorporating a central energy storage system (ESS) for both the AC and the DC sub-grids. To ensure effective operation of the proposed hybrid AC/DC microgrid architecture, a coordinated control strategy between the central ESS and the inter-linking converter (ILC) is proposed in the paper. The proposed central ESS provides voltage and frequency control to the AC sub-grid by measuring voltage and frequency at the point of common coupling (PCC) of the AC sub-grid, while providing DC voltage support to the DC sub-grid by measuring DC sub-grid’s PCC voltage. Furthermore, per-unit frequency and the DC sub-grid PCC voltage are utilized to transfer power between the two sub-grids via the ILC. Therefore, two control strategies are coordinating with each other and maintain stable operation. The central ESS eliminates the use of multiple ILCs and complex control schemes for charge and discharge control to maintain same state of charge levels at each ESS. Reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) as a subset of the reliability assessment problems, is a powerful tool for enhancing reliability, and subsequently achieving the customers’ higher satisfaction. However, deterministic RCM models could scarcely guarantee global optimality and feasibility of their solutions with real-world uncertain failure rates. In this paper, a robust model is proposed to consider the impact of failure rate uncertainty in the RCM scheduling problem, followed by a two-stage robust model development. The two-stage robust model is solved using Benders decomposition (BD) and outer approximation (OA) algorithms. The proposed model and solution method are applied to both educational RBTS2 system and real-size Finnish Distribution System, followed by demonstration of a higher financial and reliability performance, compared to that of the deterministic model. The Potential Transformer (PT) plays an important role in the measurement and monitoring of the power system. The accurate modeling of the PT is very important but not yet perfect. The stray capacitance will have a non-negligible effect on the performance of a PT. However, the influence of stray capacitance is rarely considered in existing models, which makes the broadband simulation performance weak and provides limited references in engineering. In this paper, a calculation method of PT stray capacitance is proposed to analyze the performance of the PT at different frequencies and extract the capacitive current of the PT port. This paper used a non-destructive method to obtain the test data of a PT, calculated the value of the stray capacitance, and drew the hysteresis loops of the iron core. A corresponding simulation model was established to predict the PT performance at different frequencies. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental data, which proves the accuracy of the modeling parameters. Conventional half bridge modular multilevel converter (MMC) system will suffer great over-current when there is a dc side fault. Therefore, topology study in sub-modules with dc side fault blocking capability have become one of the hotspots in MMC field. However, fault blocking topologies using conventional IGBT devices must employ more semiconductors than half bridge topology. The extra semiconductor devices employed in the topology will lead to the increase of cost and conduction loss. To reduce the conduction loss of the fault blocking topology, a novel sub-module topology is proposed in this paper. The proposed topology employs reverse blocking devices to form the low conduction loss path. Conduction loss analysis is conducted in this paper to show the priority of the proposed topology. Multi-terminal modular multilevel converter (MMC) power transmission is the current development trend in DC transmission. However, owing to its fast control and dynamic characteristics, it may interact with the other inductive devices or the grid and cause stability issues. This paper describes the use of the impedance analysis method in the frequency domain to analyze system stability. First, the multi-harmonic linearization method is used to model the impedance of a three-terminal MMC system. To make the model more accurate, the modeling considers the effect of frequency coupling caused by an asymmetric controller and the AC sampling site position. This paper then proposes an equivalent method of the grid impedance for the three-terminal system that can accurately judge the stability of the grid-connected system when the AC side is coupled. This work provides a theoretical basis for the prediction and suppression of the oscillation of MMC grid-connected system with coupling on the AC side. The neutral grounding method is one of the crucial technologies used to ensure the safe and stable operation of distribution networks. With the development of power electronics-based devices, the application of highly controllable inverters to grounding systems has become a new research direction. In this review paper, based on the summary and analysis for the research status, the flexible grounding system is systematically classified according to its control strategy and structure. And then, the following core technologies are summarized: faulted line selection, current component detection, high-resistance ground identification, ground parameter measurement, neutral point voltage control, and fault location. Subsequently, deficiencies of flexible grounding systems are summarized from the following four perspectives: reliability, accuracy, speed, and stability. Finally, some discussions and recommendations for future development and research direction are presented. Especially, the reliability-enhanced hybrid grounding system that combines active inverters and low resistance for high-resistance ground faults is recommended. DC-DC converters are needed for the future development of high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids, as they allow to interconnect lines with different voltages and topologies. The dc-dc converters can increase the grid controllability adding power flow control, voltage regulation and/or fault blocking capability. The dc modular multilevel converter (dc-MMC) is a non-isolated solution proposed to interconnect HVDC systems with the same line topology. This paper proposes a new dc-MMC with a control strategy, which allows the converter to interconnect different line topologies (e.g., rigid bipole connected to a symmetric monopole). The paper presents the different line topologies in HVDC installations. Then, a mathematical model with a variable transformation is proposed for the new dc-dc converter. A control structure is proposed and implemented in Matlab/Simulink using an average arm model and simplified dc grids. This paper analyzes the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC caused by parametric uncertainty. The unsymmetrical operation is referred to as the condition in which parameters involved in ac power generation are not equal in the phase-legs of the converter. Because existing models in the literature cannot exhibit the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC, new detailed and simplified steady-state models are developed in this paper. In the developed models, the connection between the operation of different phase-legs shows itself when the dc-link impedance is considered. Using the developed models, the parameters that can force the converter to operate in unsymmetrical conditions are identified, and the maximum variation that the converter can tolerate is found. It is shown that even a small parameter variation leads to the leakage of the ac circulating current into the dc-link, which is not acceptable. By conducting various case studies, the impacts of the dc-link length, the transmitted power, and the conversion ratio on the unsymmetrical operation of the dc/dc MMC are characterized. The results showed that the converter would be more sensitive to the parameter variation as these parameters increase. The Rogowski coil transducer's integrator will amplify the transmission error, which may lead to mal-operation of the relay. In this paper, a novel method of line relay based on the differential output of Rogowski coil is proposed. Besides, an improved fast distance relay based on the differential output of Rogowski coil is presented. Based on the equal transfer process of transmission lines(ETPTL), the voltage signal should be processed by the virtual Rogowski coil to solve the inconsistent transfer problem between voltage and current. Furthermore, this paper also presents the reconstruction method of voltage at the fault point and the least-square algorithm to solve the R-L differential equation, so as to improve the algorithm accuracy. Furthermore, the equal transfer process error of the virtual Rogowski coil is analyzed in the paper, and the design principle of low pass filter is also proposed. Simulation results and experiment results demonstrate that the improved fast distance relay scheme has high operation speed, which is signed prior to other distance relay schemes. The paper addresses an improved inner current reference calculation to be employed in the control of modular multilevel converters operating during either balanced or unbalanced conditions. The suggested reference calculation is derived based on the AC and DC additive and differential voltage components applied to the upper and lower arms of the converter. In addition, the impacts caused not only by the AC network’s impedances but also by the MMC’s arm impedances are also considered during the derivation of the AC additive current reference expressions. Another issue discussed in this article regards that singular voltage conditions, where the positive-sequence component is equal to the negative one, may occur not only in the AC network but also internally (within the converter’s applied voltages). Several different inner current reference calculation methods are compared and their applicability during the former fault conditions is analyzed. This paper addresses the interactions among the control loops of voltage-sourced converters (VSCs) embedded in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems and the impact of these interactions on the performance of individual control loops. Furthermore, this paper proposes a method to design the individual control loops, rather than the interconnected control system, such that the overall system stability is ensured in the presence of interactions. This paper addresses three aspects of the impact of control loop interactions on the overall control system of the VSC including stability, transient response, and steady-state response. To illustrate the impact of interactions on the VSC small-signal stability, stability regions of the interconnected control loops are obtained and compared against those of the various individual control loops. Then, a novel formulation of the VSC stability criterion is presented, and the small-gain theorem is utilized to determine a range of stabilizing gains for the interconnected control system. Moreover, new indices using the infinity norm are introduced to evaluate the impact of interactions on the transient response of the VSC. Finally, the DC gain of a certain set of transfer functions is used to assess the impact of control loops interactions on the set-point tracking capability of the VSC. The introduced indices along with time-domain simulations show that the transient response of the d-axis control loops is not impacted by the interactions, whereas that of the q-axis control loops is significantly impacted by the interactions. Ladder network synthesis is very significant for winding fault diagnosis within transformer. To synthesize the network reversely based on the measurable frequency response analysis (FRA) data is the only applicable way. To date the iron core and non-tested winding, which result in the frequency-dependent network components and multiple ladders in some frequency ranges, are usually not considered in the reverse process and thus the synthesis precision is largely limited. This paper proposes to synthesize multiple ladder networks in different frequency regions to handle this problem. Firstly, the sensitivities and frequency-dependent features of network components are analyzed, based on which the topology and components of the networks in diverse frequency ranges are determined afterwards. Further, the network synthesis strategies in different frequency ranges are elaborately designed. Finally, the synthesis method is applied on a distribution transformer successfully, with the fact that the extracted network parameters meet all the constraints and its FRA curve matches well with the measured one. Voltage and current waveforms contain the most authentic and granular information on the behaviors of power systems. In recent years, it has become possible to synchronize waveform data measured from different locations. Thus large-scale coordinated analyses of multiple waveforms over a wide area are within our reach. This development could unleash a set of new concepts, strategies, and tools for monitoring, protecting, and controlling power systems and apparatuses. This paper presents an in-depth review and analysis of the advancements in synchronized waveform data, including measurement devices, data characteristics, use cases, and comparisons with synchrophasor data. Based on the findings, five strategies are proposed to discover and develop synchronized waveform based applications over multiple application areas. The paper also presents three complementary measurement platforms and two data screening algorithms for application implementation. Reliable voltage measurement is a pre-requisite for correct operation of a relay's voltage-dependent functions. The secondary circuit of a relay's voltage transformer (VT) is usually fuse-protected. The blowing of a VT's three-phase fuses prevents correct voltage measurement, commonly referred to as the loss-of-voltage (LOV) condition. Relays are equipped with different methods to detect the LOV conditions and avoid confusing them with grid faults. However, this paper shows that existing LOV detection methods are prone to misoperation in the presence of inverter-based resources (IBRs). The paper's findings are corroborated by hardware-in-the-loop testing of relays with the state-of-the-art LOV detection methods. This paper also develops a new LOV detection method for transmission system relays that addresses the unveiled problem. The proposed method considers the fault behavior of IBRs and detects LOVs by examining certain conditions in three stages, namely phase-voltage-check, phase-current-check, and current-transients-check. Simulation studies are used to verify the dependable and secure operation of this new method for different LOVs, faults, IBRs, and VT configurations. The obtained results demonstrate that this method performs successfully regardless of the type of generation units. Forced ventilated underground installations are challenging to design due to the complex mathematics of turbulent fluid flow. Previous methods have tackled this problem, but only recently, the effect of confinement on a single cable has been considered. In this paper, the effect of cable confinement on the practical case of ventilated trefoil installations is investigated. The complete Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) problem is solved using Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations and then validated by laboratory experiments using pipes. FEM simulations are then used to vary the current, the wind velocity, and the distance of the trefoil from the tunnel wall to get a comprehensive picture of the phenomena. This data is used to create a new empirical equation for the Nusselt number for a wide range of operating conditions. The principle of similitude is validated for a scaled-down model of a large tunnel and then used to analyze the thermal rating of tunnels. The new equation improves the IEC standard equations by accounting for the effect of cable confinement on trefoil installations. An important finding of this paper is that a lower maximum permissible current rating is obtained, which if ignored can present a serious risk for thermal damage. Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) is a comparison based method and is useful to identify the mechanical fault in transformer winding only when the ‘healthy’ or ‘reference’ magnitude response is available. But, in practice, ‘healthy’ response may not be always available and the subsequent FRA measurement alone also cannot detect the fault. This is one serious limitation for conventional FRA method and the desired solution is still far away. To this effect, this paper presents an innovative way of measuring the frequency responses of transformer winding with two equal and opposite polarity sinusoidal excitations from two ends. For viability test, the present work is limited to fault-detection only in a single isolated uniformly-wound transformer winding followed by verification on an actual single-phase autotransformer. The two equal and opposite polarity excitations for such winding are likely to impose a virtual ground at the centre and hence the two admittances measured from the two source-ends are likely to be identical. Two admittances also get dissimilar for a fault in transformer winding and therefore the fault could be identified simply by measuring and comparing these two responses in absence of ‘healthy’ response.
