Traction transformers are one of the most important equipment in the traction power supply system. Thermal aging of transformer insulation system determines its reliable life. To achieve an estimation of the insulation life of traction power transformers operated under real load condition, the effects of traction loads on the thermal aging of oil-paper insulation in traction transformers were investigated. First, the design principles for the accelerated thermal aging experiment were studied and proposed by considering magnitude (i.e., load rate) and frequency (i.e. spare time and lasting time) of the traction load. Then, an experimental system was established in the laboratory to conduct extensive accelerated thermal aging experiments, in which the traction loads were mimicked by using positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heating plates and a programmable logic controller (PLC). Finally, the experimental results were analyzed and discussed to reveal the effects of traction load on the thermal aging of oil-paper insulation in traction transformers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oil-paper insulation ageing of transformer has characteristics of spatial locality due to uneven temperature distribution. The transformer is sealed, it is difficult to obtain the local ageing state of oil-paper insulation by sampling directly. Currently, there are no effective detection method to detect the insulation state of local regions. The oil-immersed paper resistivity inversion method can nondestructively assess the local state of oil-paper insulation. However, the current inversion methods still have shortcomings and need to be improved. In this paper, combining the back propagation neural network (BPNN) and Newton downhill method (NDM), an improved inversion method is proposed to optimize the current inversion method, so as to reduce the effect of initial value on it and make calculated results converge better. Finally, a 3D 10 kV transformer model is established to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The resistivity calculated by the improved method show that the method can provide initial resistivity values for technicians and improve the convergence and accuracy of current inversion method, which is more suitable for extending to the engineering practice. Oil-immersed paper is a weak link in internal insulation of oil immersed power transformer, whose aging state distributes inhomogeneously. However, most of the current assessment methods fail to consider the spatial distribution of aging areas inside transformer. Aiming at this problem, this paper proposes the inversion detection method to obtain the resistivity of oil-immersed paper in various regions nondestructively, and uses the resistivity of oil-immersed paper to assess directly the insulation state of oil immersed power transformers. Finite element method is applied to establish the mapping relationship between the resistivity of oil-immersed paper in different regions, and the dielectric loss factor obtained from the port of transformer. Back propagation neural network is used to learn inversely this mapping relationship so as to calculate the resistivity. Applying the proposed method on a 10-kV transformer, the calculated results are close to the measured values. The study shows that the inversion method can effectively calculate the oil-immersed resistivity in various regions, which represent the aging state in different regions of the transformer. The effects of furfural generation and partitioning on the aging assessment of oil-paper insulation of power equipment were investigated. Oil-paper samples with various furfural contents were prepared using an accelerated thermal aging experiment. The mass of the furfural generated during the aging of insulation paper was calculated and used to establish the quantitative equation between the accumulated furfural and the degree of polymerization (DP) of the insulation paper. Results showed that the reciprocal of the DP value was linearly related to the amount of furfural generated by the insulation paper. Effects of temperature, moisture, and temperature on the furfural partitioning ratio between oil and paper were analyzed using a furfural partitioning experiment, and a furfural partitioning model was established. Results showed that the furfural partitioning ratio in oil was positively correlated with temperature and moisture but negatively correlated with the DP of the insulation paper. A method for assessing the age of an insulation paper by integrating the furfural generation and partitioning models was proposed and applied on a 500-kV reactor that was returned for factory maintenance. Activation energy is popularly used for the estimation of remaining life of transformer insulation. It is defined as the average rate of all reactions that happen with cellulose. Existing literature shows that the activation energy of oil–paper insulation can be obtained from polarization depolarization current (PDC) and return voltage measurement (RVM) data that are measured at a specific temperature. It is practically difficult to ensure the same measurement temperature for both PDC and RVM data. On the other hand, PDC data and its analysis get influenced by de-trapping current. This de-trapping current is generated by ionic charge carriers that get freed from trap sites during PDC measurement process. Formation of these trap sites is related to physical, chemical reactions that happen at oil–paper interface. This paper proposes a methodology which uses de-trapped charge, dislodged from deep and shallow traps, to assess insulation condition and for the prediction of activation energy. Compared to conventional ac cables, the current rating of HVDC cable circuits is more complicated because the permissible current is not only limited by the operating temperature, but also by the electrical stress within the insulation. Therefore the IEC60287 current rating standard is considered insufficient for some HVDC applications because it fails to include the stress limitation. This paper presents an analytical methodology to calculate an electrical stress-limited rating for HVDC cables, which considers the maximum dielectric stress as the current limiting factor. In this paper, we discuss a better method to measure the paper water content of transformers using cellulose isotherms. The advantage of the new method is that the transformer oil and cellulosic insulation do not need to be in thermodynamic equilibrium. Instead, the temperature needs to be cycling in order to determine when the direction of water migration, whether out of or into the oil changes. The reversal in water migration can be used to determine the vapor pressure of the water adsorbed by the cellulose. This method was tested using 12 different conditions similar to those within a normally operating transformer. The results showed close agreement when this method is used. Knowledge about moisture content in oil impregnated paper insulation is essential when estimating remaining lifetime of power transformers. Direct evaluation of moisture content is rarely possible due to inaccessibility of the internal insulation system in transformers. Therefore, various indirect estimation techniques are utilized. Frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) measurements of transformer insulation belong to this group. To perform high quality interpretation of results of FDS measurements a good knowledge on dielectric responses in oil impregnated pressboard and paper is required, especially as it refers to their variation with water content and temperature. The aim of this paper is to provide an open access to the frequency domain spectra of oil impregnated paper and pressboard samples, which can then be used in modeling of the results of diagnostic measurements in power transformers. The effects of moisture, oxygen, and acidity upon the aging of Kraft and thermally upgraded ("Insuldur®") papers have been studied in detail. The results for Kraft are consistent with the kinetic model and parameters proposed earlier by Emsley et al., and with the principle that moisture promotes acid-hydrolysis by causing carboxylic acids to dissociate. Moisture is released during the aging of Kraft and, hence, its aging is auto-acceleratory. In contrast, Insuldur consumed moisture under the same conditions, aged more slowly, and its aging was less accelerated by added moisture. 2-Furfuraldehyde (2FAL), which is a dehydration product of pentosans and, hence, an index of moisture production, is also released from Kraft during aging, but not from Insuldur. Acids are, however, produced from both types of paper. Theoretical explanations for these findings are proposed, and their practical implications for transformer maintenance are discussed. Dielectric spectroscopy (dielectric response measurements) has been applied for nondestructive estimation of humidity in oil-paper cable insulation. The experiments have been based upon two field-aged cables, 20 and 50 years old. Paper samples from these cables have been characterized and subjected to environments with different relative humidity. Dielectric loss and capacitance have been measured in a frequency range 1 MHz to 1 kHz and related to the moisture content determined by Karl Fisher titration. A method has been verified where the moisture content is correlated to the minimum value of loss tangent (tan δ). Dielectric testing techniques, in both time and frequency domains, are currently widely used by power utilities for assessment of the condition of transformer oil-paper insulation systems. However, it has been reported that results of these tests are highly influenced by the operating temperature during measurements. The distribution, migration and equilibrium of moisture between oil and paper in a complicated insulation system is highly temperature dependent. It requires adequate experience and proper understanding to interpret the dielectric response results in the presence of temperature variations and thermal instability. Proper analysis of the dielectric test result is only possible with an understanding of the physical behavior of the insulation system in response to temperature. A circuit model, which describes the dielectric behavior of the transformers main insulation system, has been investigated in this paper. The values of the parameters of the model have been identified from the dielectric tests. A correlation has been observed between the operating temperature and the equivalent model parameters that can be used as additional information for better interpretation of the dielectric test results. This paper thus reports a detailed study on the effects of temperature on dielectric measurements of a transformer under controlled laboratory conditions. Some results of practical on-site testing are also presented to demonstrate the possibility of errors that may be introduced in dielectric test results analysis unless temperature effects are taken into consideration. Dynamics of water penetration in mass impregnated cable insulation has been studied. For experimental purposes, artificial damage has been inflicted to a 40-cm-long cable sample and water ingress has been continuously monitored by frequency response measurements. A similar experiment has been conducted on 2.8-m-long cable sample, where both frequency response and time-domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements have been performed. After termination of both experiments, actual moisture content has been measured radially and axially. Test methods for evaluating flashover voltage of ceramic and nonceramic insulators under ice, snow, and cold-fog conditions are recommended. The paper describes the procedure to be followed at various stages of an evaluation test including preparation of the test object, insulator precontamination, ice, snow, and cold-fog deposits as well as voltage applications and flashover voltage evaluation. Some relevant parameters for ice accretion, flashover voltage evaluation, artificial pollution, and power source requirements are taken from IEC 60129, IEC 60507, and IEEE Std.-4-1995 on standard techniques for high-voltage testing. An extensive revision of the IEEE C37.011 ‘Application Guide for TRV for AC High-Voltage circuit Breakers’ has been in process for the last four years. The main aim was to introduce the two- and the four- parameter description of the transient recovery voltage (TRV) as used in IEC Switchgear standards that have been introduced in the revisions of Standards C37.04 and C37.06. These two standards are being concurrently revised, but IEEE C37.011 provides the necessary explanations on TRV characteristic in advance. Recently developed monitoring-systems show the need as also the possibilities for online- and offline-onsite-diagnostics. The limit in sensitivity for electrical pd-measurements according to IEC 60270 which is reached using filters for sinusoidal disturbances and compensation for corona impulses is still not satisfactory. The acoustic partial discharge measurement (pd-measurement) is also a well known and reliable method often used by transformer manufacturers in testing. In laboratory setups a gain in sensitivity of the acoustic in comparison to the electrical pd measurements could be established. This is reached by adapting the sensors to the propagation path, a modern but moderately priced acquisition hardware and the introduction of new signal processing algorithms. Frequent failures of transition joints were reported mainly near to the crutch area of the paper insulated cable side of the joints. In this paper, the authors present an estimation of the electric field and temperature distribution in the paper insulated cable side of a transition joint using simulations based on finite element method for 3-D geometry, which, apparently did not get much attention until now. It is found that non-linearities in material properties result in drastic changes in the distribution of electric field. The results indicate electric field enhancement near crutch area. The effect of varying load current, and ambient temperature on the peak electric field has been investigated. The simulations are validated analytically. One of the issues faced by asset managers in the electric power industry is the condition and remaining life assessment of the high voltage (HV) assets. In contrast to other power equipment, transmission power cables are mainly subjected to corrective maintenance. To support the asset management of service aged transmission power cable circuits, this paper discusses an approach of integrated knowledge rules for condition-based maintenance based on laboratory investigations and field examples. There are very few recent publications on this subject in spite of aging power cable infrastructure; therefore, this paper aims at showing practical applications of condition-based maintenance of this important component of the transmission and distribution systems. The simulation of electric field transients in HVDC cables can be a fundamental tool to support insulation system design when operation dynamics, which includes voltage polarity inversions and load variation, becomes significant during the expected cable life. The field behavior during voltage and temperature transients is associated with intrinsic and extrinsic ageing processes that can affect the cable design life. Traditional models employed for electric field simulations consider only the non–linear, steady–state dependence of conductivity on temperature and field magnitude, but they neglect the transient behavior of permittivity and conductivity, that is, polarization and charge trapping phenomena. These processes impact on the duration of the field transient and thus ageing. This paper discusses the numerical implementation of an electro–quasistatic model that can be used to perform transient simulations of electric fields in HVDC cables insulation. With respect to the model traditionally employed, the presented one is extended with Debye's equations for dielectric polarization processes. The model is implemented numerically using finite differences, or the Occhini equivalent circuit: this paper demonstrates that the two approaches are equivalent. Fast and accurate power-flow methods are of great importance, especially in near real-time optimal operation of power systems. This importance will be even more highlighted in the presence of more repetitions of power-flow calculations, which cause more computational complexities in optimization problems. As a solution, in this paper, a novel fast and accurate approach of linear power-flow formulation is proposed. Principles of the proposed approach are based on dividing power-flow calculations into base and variable parts. To this aim, at first, system modeling of base and variable parts are presented. For the base-part modeling, utilizing a nonlinear power-flow, an accurate base power-flow (BPF) is extracted. Afterwards, by linearizing the power system around the BPF, variable-part model which is the result of a linear fitting process, is obtained. Then, it is shown that the variable-part of the operating point is always a function of the obtained base-part and variable-part models. In this paper, by focusing on the stochastic application of the proposed approach, different uncertainties in a distribution system are considered. Finally, numerical results carried out in the Matlab environment, for a IEEE 34-bus standard distribution system and then a 1486-bus case study, verify the performance of the proposed approach. As is known, cable plays a significant role in electric power transmission of the ship. From the safety perspective, this paper aims to predict the ship cable life more accurately and analyze its reliability under small sample conditions. To achieve this goal, based on the non-equidistant grey model (NEGM (1, 1)), an optimized equal-dimension dynamic NEGM (1, 1) is proposed in this paper. In the improved model, the raw data smoothness and the background value are optimized to apply to grey model parameters. Equal-dimension dynamic prediction algorithm (EDDPA) is adopted to predict the lifetime of ship CXF type cable. Compared with the aging model from literature and NEGM (1, 1), the prediction effectiveness and reliability of the proposed model are more considerable. Interestingly, with the increase of recurrence times, the numerical results show this model has higher prediction performance. This paper is devoted to electric arc furnace (EAF) modeling using a random differential equation based on the power balance equation. The proposed approach broadens and improves the model through the introduction of stochastic processes in place of existing coefficients. The paper presents a method which enables the estimation of EAF model coefficients with the help of measurement data - voltage and current waveforms recorded during the melting stage of an EAF work cycle. The estimation process is conducted with a Monte Carlo method and genetic algorithm, which is applied iteratively to each of the defined frames of the input signal. The estimated coefficients have been analyzed with respect to their time variability as well as the probability distributions of their values and increments. The results have been extensively visualized. Next, the identification of the stochastic processes representing the model coefficients has been carried out. Based on the previous results and autocorrelation functions, the density functions and parameters of discrete-time stochastic processes were identified. Voltage rise caused by high levels of distributed generation is manifesting as voltage regulation challenges for many electricity network service providers. In this environment it would be ideal to reduce supply voltage magnitudes, however, many network operators are hesitant to do so due to concerns related to consumer appliance performance at reduced supply voltage magnitudes. Voltage regulation requirements are defined by network standards and network service providers must ensure voltages remain within specified limits. Through an evaluation of domestic appliance performance when supplied at various voltage magnitudes, this paper examines the impact of varying voltage levels on residential appliances. Equipment energy demand, operation and actuation were monitored for each applied voltage magnitude. While no equipment failures were recorded, appliance behaviour varied significantly with applied voltage magnitude. Individual appliance conservation voltage reduction (CVR) factors have also been established. The results highlight the importance of good voltage regulation and provide substantiated appliance performance figures for future studies. The outcomes of this paper allow electricity network service providers to understand the implications of supply voltage magnitude on domestic appliance performance, whether it be understating of the impact of higher voltage magnitudes caused by distributed generation or implications of reducing voltage magnitudes to provide headroom for distributed generation integration. Modern electric grid usages extensive non-linear loads leading to the increased harmonic current injection in the system. This paper proposes a data-driven algorithm based on a sparse decomposition approach with the Overcomplete Hybrid Dictionary (OHD) and provides in-depth mathematical analysis to detect and mitigate harmonics in emerging electric power systems. The sparse decomposition method is widely used in image processing applications with significant advantages to big-data applications. However, its application is not properly addressed in electric grids’ applications despite massive data generation in a smart grid environment. Hence, in this paper, the performance evaluation of a sparse decomposition-based algorithm using a greedy approach is proposed and carried out in a real-time simulation environment for Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) application for the real-time detection, classification, and mitigation of PQ events to show its suitability and effectiveness. Finally, the experimental results on a small-scale laboratory setup are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed sparse-based control algorithm for DSTATCOM in real-time applications. The comparative result shows that the proposed sparse-based method is advantageous for off-line PQ signal processing and capable of real-time detection, classification, and control of the power apparatus for harmonics mitigation. In this paper, the initial stage and the return stroke current waveform parameters of rocket-triggered lightning flashes to the ground and to the distribution line have been analyzed. The results show that the average current, the charge transferred and the action integral associated with the Initial Stage with return strokes are greater than the corresponding values without return strokes. For the initial stage, the presence of the distribution line greatly reduces the maximum current, average current, charge transfer, and action integral by a factor of 0.35, 0.42, 0.51, and 0.19, respectively. For the return stroke, the presence of the distribution line has little effect on the other parameters except for a 2.4-fold increase in the 10-90% risetime. The presence of the distribution line affects the initial stage parameters more significantly than the return stroke parameters, probably because the lightning channel equivalent impedance of the initial stage is much smaller than that of the return stroke. The lightning channel equivalent impedance of the initial stage estimated in this paper is about 145 ohms and the estimated lightning channel equivalent impedance for the return stroke is greater than 2000 ohms. Negative-sequence current is required to be intentionally injected to support the power grid or compensate the imbalanced load in asymmetrical faults utilizing STATCOM. However, the extreme compensation range of negative-sequence current injection becomes complicated when grid voltage becomes asymmetrical. This article presents a novel off-line strategy for negative-sequence current compensation under two typical kinds of asymmetrical grid faults — single-phase voltage drop and double-phase voltage drop, with the following two benefits simultaneously: maximizing negative current compensation capacity; avoiding iterations and reducing computation burdens. In this paper, the mechanism of DC voltage balancing among three phases in STATCOM is analyzed and a new identification method of negative-sequence current compensation range is explored out. To simplify the calculation, this paper takes the ratio of negative-sequence reactive (Iq-) and active (Id-) current as a variable (s). In this way, the relationship between the extreme compensation range, asymmetrical voltage sag depth of power grid h is drawn with MATLAB. Different from the previous iterative method, the off-line identification method is applied to avoid huge iterations. By fitting the curve, the precise ranges of negative-sequence current compensation under different asymmetrical grid faults are approximated as simple polynomials, thus significantly reducing the computation burdens. The opening up of the railway to competition in Europe has been accompanied by many technical challenges never before seen in the railway field. One of these challenges concerns precise energy metering. As European railways have been a monopoly until now, the current systems can only measure the energy consumption of a single operator. In accordance with European law, the installation of an energy meter has been mandatory in new or refurbished rolling stocks since 2014. Nevertheless, these energy meters are still not fully reliable, with misreadings and missing readings being common occurrences. To address the problem of energy metering data reliability, this paper presents a method for validating the reading measurement based on a physical model and validates it in two different case studies. For the issue of energy metering data availability, different estimators are developed, and their performance are shown with the aim of calculating the missing consumptions for both case studies. Analogous to the way a good driver is aware of neighboring cars, electrical loads can coordinate with other loads within a building or section of a distribution grid. This paper develops methods that enable groups of cyclic loads (devices that turn on and off periodically to maintain setpoints) to reduce their peak aggregate power demand. The methods accommodate a wide variety of cyclic loads, including those with nonlinear or unknown dynamics, and can be implemented in a fully distributed fashion. This paper targets settings with a few hundred cyclic loads or fewer, where the methods developed here could reduce demand peaks significantly while maintaining or improving quality of service. In recent years, there is an increased use of passive filters in both transmission and distribution systems due to the proliferation of power electronic devices. However, the problem of filter design has not been well addressed in the past and one example is the application of high-pass filters in a filter package. Three types of HP filters are widely used to mitigate multiple harmonics, i.e., 2nd HP filter, 3rd HP filter and C-type filter. There is still a lack of research to clearly reveal the characteristics of each filter, which makes it difficult for the designer to select the optimal filter topology under different circumstances. The main goal of this paper is to solve the problem of how to select a proper configuration among three HP filter candidates for a given harmonic problem. Unlike the conventional optimization-based filter studies, this paper investigates three HP filters in an analytical way. As a result, the paper provides a deep insight into the inherent characteristics of the filter and the conclusions drawn in the paper are universal; thus can be used in different applications, ranging from low voltage levels to high voltage levels. The research results lead to a recommended application scope of each HP filter, which is very useful to guide the design of filter packages and help designers to evaluate the design results. This paper proposes an approach to mitigate adverse effects of the fault management of closed/ring grids with high shares of distributed generation (DG). The approach refers to conventional distance protection relays in particular. The rising share of DG, especially in distribution systems, can lead to overloadings and intolerable voltages. Closed-ring structures increase the grid capacity for DG due to more balanced load and voltages profiles. However, malfunctions of protection relays may occur because fault locating and selective fault clearing can be disturbed. This paper presents a distance protection algorithm for feeder relays that complies with the requirements of closed/ring grids with inter/infeeds. The proposed current comparison method (CCM) bases on the comparison of negative/sequence currents. It needs no voltage measurement and remains unaffected from inter/infeeds and fault resistances. Additionally, for relays located at the ring coupler, where the ring can be opened, a coupling relay method (CRM) is proposed. It locates unsymmetrical faults in closed/ring grids with inter/infeeds and enables fast and selective opening of the ring. This helps maintaining reliable power supply for customers in closed rings. Multiple strokes are the main factors affecting the safe and stable operation of power equipment. As the core lightning protection equipment, arresters are also frequently thermally collapsed due to multiple strokes. This paper investigates thermal effects of polymer-housed metal-oxide surge arrester (PMOSA) under multiple strokes. The comparative experiments of PMOSA lightning impulse are carried out through multiple strokes of experiment platform, including continuous lightning stroke and multiple strokes. Furthermore, the temperature distribution of the housing surface is obtained by infrared imager for thermal effect analysis. Subsequently, some typical DC parameters are tested to explore the association of impulse aging and thermal effects of the arrester under multiple strokes. Finally, a thermal-electric coupling model (TECM) is constructed to investigate the influence of some factors on the temperature of PMOSA from the perspective of materials and structure. The research in this paper can provide a theory reference and brief data support for improving the heat dissipation performance of arresters under multiple strokes based on structural optimization design and material modification. Multi-frequency (or harmonic) emissions and interactions are ongoing challenges for converter-dominated power systems. Consequently, multi-frequency models are introduced for power quality and harmonic stability studies. Rotor-Speed-Dependent (RSD) emissions from Type 3 Wind Turbines (WT) can lead to unexpected interactions. However, there are only a few specific studies on Type 3 WTs’ emissions. Besides, the provided analyses have been only based on field measurements. In this paper, the uncertainties of the field measurements are demonstrated experimentally. This paper provides an experimental analysis of emissions in different parts of a Type 3 WT, including stator, rotor, grid-side converter, and DC-link. In this way, theoretical emission patterns are formulated in sequence domain and verified by experimental measurements from a 2.2 MVA Type 3 WT tested by a 15 MVA grid emulator. The tests include emission measurements in different rotor speeds with identical output power set-point. To the best of our knowledge, the provided experiments are unique presentations from different parts of a Type 3 WT using MVA-scale torque and grid emulators. The test results provide a good impression of the existence, patterns, and amplitudes of the RSD emissions. Single horizontal and vertical grounding electrodes are often used for an earth connection of the lightning protection system. However, there are many practical situations when such electrodes have to be enhanced for better efficiency and replaced by multiple horizontal, vertical and/or inclined electrodes. This paper presents a systematic approach to evaluating and comparing the lightning performance of such grounding arrangements based on simple formulas. The contributions of this paper are: It is shown that impulse impedance Z may be derived from known formulas for low-frequency grounding resistance R; a new definition of effective length is introduced that allows for such a derivation; a collection of accurate formulas for R of all considered grounding electrode arrangements is presented; and a new concept of “effective volume” is described that enables a simple procedure to increase electrodes’ effective length. The new formulas for R, Z, and effective length of the different electrode arrangements allow an analysis that might help search for a choice of cost-effective configuration and dimensions of the grounding systems in the early design stage. Voltage source inverters (VSIs) with vector control based on phase-locked loop (PLL) suffer instability when connecting to a very weak AC grid (short circuit ratio (SCR) $ < $ 1.3). The conventional inductive grid impedance compensation for the PLL by virtually reducing the grid impedance can stabilize this connection. However, the analysis in this paper indicates that its stabilization effectiveness is sensitive to grid impedance variance and, indeed, overcompensation causes the PLL instability. Therefore, in this paper, an improved grid impedance compensation for the PLL is proposed to achieve the same stabilization for very-weak-grid connection and possess a good tolerance of grid impedance variance and overcompensation. A comprehensive small-signal model of the VSI using the proposed PLL’s grid impedance compensation is derived for stability analysis and parameter design. The time-domain simulation for this VSI is built to validate the stability analysis. Comparison studies for both proposed and conventional PLL’s grid impedance compensation are conducted including the stability effectiveness, VSI performance and grid impedance variance. Cable fault location is generally much more difficult if cable defect has not reached the level of serious breakdown. Traditional methods such as time domain reflectometry (TDR) and partial discharge detection cannot solve this problem well due to their low sensitivity. This paper proposes a new non-destructive detection method based on the impedance spectroscopy (IS), which can effectively locate soft faults in the cable. In this paper, a numerical model for cable with distributed parameters is established firstly. Based on this model, cable faults are extracted from the imaginary part of impedance spectrum with Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). The Chebyshev window is introduced to suppress interference and enhance signal-to-noise ratio, which improves the sensitivity and accuracy of fault location significantly. Experiments and simulations show that this method can well locate multi-segment defects in cables with good accuracy. The window function successfully amplifies the normalized amplitude of faults and improves the positioning accuracy. Compared with other method, this method reduces distortion points effectively. This paper addresses challenges with modeling of heat transfer phenomenon for cables in duct or pipes when applying a numerical solution. Heat transport mechanisms between the cable and pipe surfaces are conduction, convection and radiation. Numerical calculation of convection when applying a finite element analysis (FEA), or other numerical tools requires heavy computation power and great skills of the program operator. In general, this is the most difficult part when modeling the heat transfer between the cable and the pipe surfaces and practitioners are often forced to use simplifications or approximate models. This paper introduces a simplified model where the contribution from convection is replaced by a heat source at the pipe wall and a corresponding heat sink at the cable. The phenomenon of air rising vertically in the tube resulting in the upper half of the pipe being heated more by convection than the lower half is also modelled. The simplified model is compared to both known models from thermodynamics, FEA including convection and laboratory as well as the full-scale field measurements. The simplified model shows good correspondence to both simulations and measurements, with the temperatures deviating by less than 1 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an approach for the time domain statistical simulation of field-to-wire coupling model with uncertain wire position in traverse direction. The parameters of governing equations of field-to-wire coupling model about the wire position are expanded to the augmented governing equations by using the generalized polynomial chaos technique with normalized orthogonal basis functions. And the coefficients of the polynomial chaos expansions are solved by combining with the stochastic Galerkin method. However, the solution of augmented governing equations is a complex problem. Therefore, a new finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm based on the implicit Wendroff difference format is proposed to solve the governing equations, and the general iterative equations are given in this paper. The proposed methods are verified by a field-to-wire coupling model. The effectiveness and advantages of the new FDTD algorithm and the uncertainty analysis method based on generalized polynomial chaos technique are verified, which are achieved by comparing with the conventional leapfrog fashion FDTD algorithm and the Monte Carlo technique, respectively. Electrical utilities are continuously searching for new ways to cut costs and effectively increase the quality of service being supplied to their clients, which is closely related to the number of failures and the time it takes to locate and repair them. A helpful input for this continuing effort would be to have an estimate of the type of failure when it occurs. The analysis presented in this paper is part of an effort being carried out to estimate failure types based on an analysis of observable indirect variables. These indirect variables must be readily available after the failure detection, through a Smart Grid infrastructure, to enable a future application to carry out the estimation. This paper lays the groundwork on ambient and historical variables that display a relationship with various types of MV cable network failures. The paper presents relevant data and analyses the relationship between the various failure types and indirect variables, such as date and time, loading, historical data, daily rainfall, accumulated rainfall, dew point and ambient temperature. This paper proposes a systematic method for the identification of the load circuit parameters (say the $\boldsymbol{R}$ , $\boldsymbol{L}$ , and $\boldsymbol{C}$ elements) based only on the information of the instantaneous voltage and current measured at the point of common coupling (pcc). Geometric Algebra (GA) and concepts of differential geometry are used to produce a rigorous mathematical framework. The identification is formulated as a multidimensional geometrical problem that is solved conveniently by means of GA. Once the passive elements of the load have been identified, the active and reactive powers can be computed from first electromagnetic principles (Maxwell Equations). The theory is general and is verified with linear and nonlinear circuits. The paper shows single-phase circuits but the theory can be extended to three-phase circuits. The method is easy to program and has shown to be very robust for all tested cases. Because of its generality, the method presented will find applications beyond electric circuits. This paper presents the three-phase impulse overvoltage measured at the terminal of a 10 kV distribution line when the impulse current was injected into the phase conductor of the distribution line. The overvoltage observation station was installed at the terminal of the line to record the three-phase overvoltage waveforms. It is shown that the struck phase overvoltage consists of three components including the negative pulse, the stage of residual voltage maintenance and the overshoot oscillation part. The observed negative peak values of the struck phase overvoltage range from −85.4 kV to −96.0 kV in three different injected impulse levels at 90,120,150 kV charging voltage. The duration of residual voltage depends on the duration time of injected current. Furthermore, there is a strong positive relationship between the oscillation amplitude of the struck phase overvoltage and the injected current amplitude. The peak amplitudes of three-phase overvoltage always have the following magnitude relationship: struck phase C > induced phase B > induced phase A. The voltage coupling coefficients of induced phases will not exceed 0.4. The test method proposed in this paper will be helpful to the research on the lightning overvoltage response characteristics of the distribution line and the protection analysis of arresters. The paper addresses a real-time optimization-based reference calculation integrated with a control structure for Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) operating under normal and constrained situations (where it has reached current and/or voltage limitations, as it may occur during system faults). Firstly, a nonlinear optimization problem has been developed in which it prioritizes to satisfy the AC grid current set-points imposed by the transmission System Operator (TSO). The constrained nonlinear optimization problem is formulated based on the steady-state model of the MMC, whereby the prioritization is achieved through distinct weights defined in the Objective Function’s (OF) terms. The resultant optimization problem, however, is highly nonlinear requiring high computation burden to be solved in real-time. To cope with this issue, this paper applies a Linear Time-Varying (LTV) approximation, which permits to represent the nonlinear dynamics of the system as constant parameters, while a Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) system is used to formulate the optimization constraints. The converter’s current references are determined in real-time by solving a constrained linearized optimization problem at each control time step, which considers the TSO’s demands, the current MMC operating point and its physical limitations. Theoretical analyses comparing the responses of the linear and nonlinear optimization problems are performed to validate the accuracy of the LTV approximation. Finally, the linearized-optimization problem is integrated with the MMC controllers, evaluated under different AC and DC network conditions and compared with conventional control strategies, where it is shown that the presented method can be potentially employed to obtain the MMC current references for distinct network scenarios. Weather-related or other types of faults can negatively impact the continuity of the electricity delivery to the consumers and, thus, lead to poorer reliability scores. 90% of customer outage-minutes are due to events which affect local distribution systems. The radial configuration is simple and has a low cost design; however, when a fault occurs it often causes power outages beyond the location of the fault itself. Therefore, it is beneficial for utilities to automatically isolate the fault and, thus, restore power to as many consumers as possible. The benefits of fault isolation and service restoration include, but are not limited to: enhanced reliability and resiliency, reduced loss of revenue to the utility, and enhanced comfort and satisfaction for the utility’s consumers. This paper provides an algorithm to quickly isolate a fault and automatically restore power to as many nodes of the distribution system as possible by opening and closing switches already placed within the system. The expert model and centralized algorithm that are proposed in this paper guarantee an optimal solution and a short run-time regardless of the size of the distribution system. This paper proposes an adaptive self-tuned current controller design for an LCL-filtered LC-tuned single-phase shunt hybrid active power filter (HAPF), which offers adaptability and flexibility of the control system to filter parameters changes. System modelling and online identification of parameters are presented. Then, a systematic self-tuned controller (STC) design is proposed to calculate the controller parameters and obtain the final control law adaptively. The exact HAPF parameters design is described and the overall closed-loop stability evaluation with considering digital control delay is discussed in this paper. To confirm the theoretical achievements, simulations and experimental tests on a real prototype system are performed. The results are in good accordance and demonstrate the effectiveness and superior performance of the suggested control technique. Furthermore, a comprehensive comparison between the proposed control technique and other controllers is provided to show the superiority of the proposed system from different aspects. The paper presents an experimental validation of a method to locate partial discharges (PDs) on power distribution and transmission networks. The method is based on electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) theory, and it uses a Transmission Line Matrix (TLM) model to describe the propagation of the PD signals in the reversed time. Since PDs are regarded as a symptom of insulation degradation, on-line PD location is considered an important approach to monitoring the integrity of a power distribution network, with the aim of detecting and preventing faults and improving network reliability. In this paper, the EMTR-based method is described and its effectiveness in PD localization using only one measurement point is demonstrated in three real 33 kV power lines. Its effectiveness is proved with and without an on-line electromagnetically noisy environment, and its accuracy is evaluated with respect to different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels of the networks. The validation shows that the method is able to locate PDs with an error of 0.14% with respect to the total length of the line in the absence of noise, and with an error that is always lower than 0.5% for an SNR down to −7 dB. This paper presents an online method to monitor the conditions of the substation grounding grid. The proposed method utilizes phase-to-ground faults occurring in downstream feeders as test current sources and the neutral of a specially selected feeder as the electrode for GPR (ground potential rise) measurement. The measured fault currents and GPRs are then used to estimate substation grounding grid impedance. The method, once established, can monitor the grounding grid impedance continuously and automatically, and the trend of the impedance change can be observed. As a result, the proposed method can yield much more reliable information on the substation grounding conditions. The method also overcomes many disadvantages of the offline methods. This paper presents extensive verification, sensitivity, and application studies for an online substation grounding grid condition monitoring method proposed in a companion paper. The studies are conducted using a realistic substation grounding grid and associated feeder configurations commonly encountered in North America. The verification studies confirm that the proposed method is able to estimate the substation grounding impedances with acceptable accuracy. Main factors impacting measurement accuracy are identified and quantified through sensitivity studies. The findings lead to a guide for the implementation and operation of the proposed method. This paper presents a novel methodology to estimate the saturation curve parameters of single-phase transformers, using minimum information from inrush and no-load tests. Only the value of the first current peak and the decay time are used from a unique inrush test, and only the third and fifth current harmonics from a unique no-load test. The proposed methodology is based on the existence of a signature for each transformer which can be easily obtained and characterize all possible inrush currents. This is the main contribution of the paper. Different transformers with different parameters have been tested in the laboratory. Experiments and simulations are carried out to validate the methodology. First, the respective no-load and inrush tests are made. Second, the parameters of each transformer are estimated. Third, the performance and accuracy of the proposed methodology are verified by a close agreement between the measured and the estimated saturation curves and between the simulated and the recorded inrush waveforms. Some remarkable advantages of the proposed methodology are: (a) considers the deep saturation, (b) avoids the need to know the residual flux (or to demagnetize the transformer) and the switching angle from the inrush test, and (c) it is computationally straightforward.
