Voltage rise caused by high levels of distributed generation is manifesting as voltage regulation challenges for many electricity network service providers. In this environment it would be ideal to reduce supply voltage magnitudes, however, many network operators are hesitant to do so due to concerns related to consumer appliance performance at reduced supply voltage magnitudes. Voltage regulation requirements are defined by network standards and network service providers must ensure voltages remain within specified limits. Through an evaluation of domestic appliance performance when supplied at various voltage magnitudes, this paper examines the impact of varying voltage levels on residential appliances. Equipment energy demand, operation and actuation were monitored for each applied voltage magnitude. While no equipment failures were recorded, appliance behaviour varied significantly with applied voltage magnitude. Individual appliance conservation voltage reduction (CVR) factors have also been established. The results highlight the importance of good voltage regulation and provide substantiated appliance performance figures for future studies. The outcomes of this paper allow electricity network service providers to understand the implications of supply voltage magnitude on domestic appliance performance, whether it be understating of the impact of higher voltage magnitudes caused by distributed generation or implications of reducing voltage magnitudes to provide headroom for distributed generation integration. Flexible DC distribution networks have been widely developed because of their advantages of high efficiency, low cost, and easy access to renewable energy. However, as distribution networks have more ends than the two-terminal transmission line, it is more challenging to protect them and locate their faults. Therefore, this paper proposes a modified T-source circuit breaker to protect against DC faults. Based on the proposed circuit breaker, an integral fault location method using double-terminal asynchronous data is proposed. The accuracy of the algorithm is not affected by the fault resistance. There are no differential terms in the algorithm, which greatly reduces the sensitivity to noise. The integral algorithm can remain steady when the voltage and current are zero in oscillation and attenuation periods. This constitutes the main contribution of this paper. Finally, it is verified by simulation and experiment that the proposed circuit breaker can isolate the power source within a short time in the typical DC distribution network. The increasing penetration of distributed renewable energy sources drastically alters the dynamic characteristics of distribution networks (DNs). Therefore, several equivalent models have been recently proposed, to analyze more accurately the complex behavior of modern DNs. However, relatively simple models are still commonly used in practice for dynamic power system studies. In addition, dynamic equivalent models for DNs are sensitive to different operating conditions and there is lack of systematic understanding of their performance. Scope of this paper is to propose a methodology for identifying the applicability range in terms of accuracy and generalization capability of several conventional and newly developed equivalent models for the dynamic analysis of modern DNs. A set of metrics is used for the modelling accuracy assessment and a sensitivity analysis framework is introduced to fully quantify the generalization capabilities of DN equivalent models. Negative-sequence current is required to be intentionally injected to support the power grid or compensate the imbalanced load in asymmetrical faults utilizing STATCOM. However, the extreme compensation range of negative-sequence current injection becomes complicated when grid voltage becomes asymmetrical. This article presents a novel off-line strategy for negative-sequence current compensation under two typical kinds of asymmetrical grid faults — single-phase voltage drop and double-phase voltage drop, with the following two benefits simultaneously: maximizing negative current compensation capacity; avoiding iterations and reducing computation burdens. In this paper, the mechanism of DC voltage balancing among three phases in STATCOM is analyzed and a new identification method of negative-sequence current compensation range is explored out. To simplify the calculation, this paper takes the ratio of negative-sequence reactive (Iq-) and active (Id-) current as a variable (s). In this way, the relationship between the extreme compensation range, asymmetrical voltage sag depth of power grid h is drawn with MATLAB. Different from the previous iterative method, the off-line identification method is applied to avoid huge iterations. By fitting the curve, the precise ranges of negative-sequence current compensation under different asymmetrical grid faults are approximated as simple polynomials, thus significantly reducing the computation burdens. Due to the complex structures and fault conditions, accurate fault sensing of the underground distribution cables is a difficult task. The distribution automation system (DAS) and fault indicator system (FIS) are only applicable to the severe faults. In addition, the current DAS and FIS are all based on the centralized data processing system (CDS), increasing the communication pressure and data processing time of the main station. Considering the advantages of edge computing, this paper investigates using the grounding line currents to sense the fault in distribution cable networks. First, an edge computing based fault sensing system (ECS) is designed. The equivalent time-domain distribution cable models considering multi-conductor mutual couplings are then established in both normal and fault cases. The time-domain features of the cable grounding line currents prior to and after the fault are analyzed to create the fault detection criterion. Combining the network topology, locations of the measurement units (MUs), and direction factor of the ground line current, a space matrix based algorithm is created to achieve fault cable section location at edge. The line parameters of power distribution systems stored in the dispatching center may have large errors due to the line aging and system operational dynamics. Such line parameter errors may directly affect the state estimation accuracy, and the advanced management functionalities rely on these parameters. This paper proposes an augmented state estimation method of erroneous distribution line parameters considering the presence of phasor measurement units (PMUs). The augmented state-space models under single and multiple measurement snapshots are established separately by combining the parameter state equation with the state-space model of the distribution network. The augmented state estimation based on the improved adaptive unscented Kalman filter (IAUKF) is developed. The proposed method can effectively perceive the process noise statistical parameter of the erroneous parameters during the estimation to accurately estimate line parameters. The proposed solution is validated through simulation experiments using the IEEE 33-bus system and the numerical results demonstrated its accurate parameter estimation performance.Also, the scalability of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated based on the simulation of the 118-bus system with distributed generators. In DC distribution networks, the uncertainties of renewable energies and loads cause frequent voltage fluctuations. In this paper, a voltage regulation strategy based on the combined coordination of centralized optimal control (COC) and adaptive droop control (ADC) is proposed for droop-controlled DC distribution networks. In the COC strategy, the operation reference power of voltage source converters (VSCs) is optimized using the bus injection power measurements to improve the voltage profile and balance the power loading rates of different VSCs. The VSC capacity margin constraint is established to ensure that the capacity margin of each VSC is sufficient to cope with the unexpected fluctuation of loads and renewable energies. Then, an ADC strategy is adopted to handle voltage fluctuation between adjacent two COCs. In the ADC strategy, the operation reference power of the VSCs is further adjusted to recover the voltages. The voltage regulation is achieved based on the relationship among the VSC voltages and the minimum/maximum voltages of the whole network, which does not depend on the information of each nodal voltage and thus real-time network communication is avoided. With the increasing number of controllable devices in the grid, devices owned by different entities are supposed to cooperatively support the grid operation. To balance the various interests of the customers and the utility, this paper proposes a two-level scheduling algorithm to address voltage regulation by coordinating the customer-owned battery energy storage system (BESS) and utility-owned load tap changers (LTCs) in power distribution systems. The objective is to find the optimal operation scheduling for both BESSs and LTCs that simultaneously maximize the economic payback and satisfy system operation rules. For BESSs, a local optimization problem is formulated in a chance-constrained manner in major consideration of the economic performance. For the utility interest, a Markov decision process (MDP) and a computationally efficient reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm are utilized to solve the optimal tap setting problem. To coordinate BESSs and LTCs, a global voltage adjustment is applied. This paper proposes a novel reactive power-based control strategy for single-phase PV inverters (PVIs) to simultaneously improve voltage unbalance (VU) and voltage regulation (VR) in low-voltage distribution networks. The proposed strategy relies on communication links between neighboring PVIs to exchange limited data. In this strategy, each PVI finds communication paths between itself and the closest neighboring ones connected to other phases. Then, using the obtained paths and the maximum and the minimum voltage magnitude of the grid, PVIs improve both VU and VR at the same time. The performance of the proposed control strategy is evaluated by various simulation studies using the IEEE European low-voltage test feeder and considering different operational conditions. In addition, the impacts of moving clouds and a failure in the communication links have been assessed. The simulation results exhibit that using the proposed control strategy, the voltage magnitude of all the nodes will remain within the allowed limits and at the same time, the phase voltage unbalance factor will be also significantly improved. The neutral grounding method is one of the crucial technologies used to ensure the safe and stable operation of distribution networks. With the development of power electronics-based devices, the application of highly controllable inverters to grounding systems has become a new research direction. In this review paper, based on the summary and analysis for the research status, the flexible grounding system is systematically classified according to its control strategy and structure. And then, the following core technologies are summarized: faulted line selection, current component detection, high-resistance ground identification, ground parameter measurement, neutral point voltage control, and fault location. Subsequently, deficiencies of flexible grounding systems are summarized from the following four perspectives: reliability, accuracy, speed, and stability. Finally, some discussions and recommendations for future development and research direction are presented. Especially, the reliability-enhanced hybrid grounding system that combines active inverters and low resistance for high-resistance ground faults is recommended. Accurate faulty phase detection under single-line-to-ground (SLG) fault is the basis of the emerging voltage-based fault arc suppression technology. Most conventional faulty phase recognition criteria assume the distributed line-to-ground parameters are symmetrical, therefore suffering invalidity in actual distribution networks especially under high-resistance ground-fault conditions. This paper firstly analyzes the magnitude and phase angle variation models of the phase-to-ground voltages before and after the SLG fault. Considering the asymmetrical distributed parameters and the line impedance, the specific phase-to-ground voltage variation rules corresponding to SLG fault on each phase are then discussed. Based on the voltage variation rules, a robust and practical method for faulty phase identification is proposed, which does not need the distributed parameters. Finally, the correctness of the variation rules and the availability of the proposed method is verified by simulation. With the advancements of the battery energy storage systems (BESSs), reduction of their manufacturing costs and government subsidies, the BESS uptake is likely to increase rapidly in power distribution networks. This paper investigates the effects of residential BESSs on low-voltage (LV) networks using the actual household load profiles equipped with BESS and solar-photovoltaic (PV) systems. The electricity consumption data collected via smart meters (2200 households with PV/BESS, 1950 households with PV only and 1000 households without a PV or a BESS) at different solar-PV penetration levels and network types are used to simulate real network operating scenarios. A real LV distribution network in Australia is analysed in DIgSILENT PowerFactory under different scenarios, such as, customers with and without a solar-PV/BESS, with a solar-PV but without a BESS, and without a solar-PV, by using both the power flow and quasi-dynamic simulation studies under balanced and the unbalanced network loading conditions. According to the study, customers experience large voltage excursions from solar-PV power exports, which could be resolved by the household BESS, provided that the BESS charging is coordinated with the solar-PV production. Moreover, quasi-dynamic simulation shows that the BESS could reduce the violation of the over-voltage limit during the solar peak hours (midday) by lowering the worst-case feeder voltage by 3%. Finally, extreme-event (high solar PV generation scenario) simulation shows that the implementation of the BESS controller to facilitate charging BESS during afternoon solar-PV export may reduce the negative grid impact and will assist to avoid network upgrades. Ground faults are the main cause of electrical failure in transmission and distribution systems. In ungrounded distribution networks, it is difficult to detect where a first ground fault has happened as only capacitive currents are available. Also, it is important to trip only the faulty line in order to ensure the system's reliability. Directional residual overcurrent relays are the standard solution for these systems, but their difficult commissioning and high costs make it not trivial. This paper introduces a new selective and directional protection method to determine the faulty line in ungrounded medium voltage networks with three or more feeders. The method evaluates the residual currents in the feeders coupled to the same busbars in combination with a reference current created by the sum of a combination of residual currents of all feeders. Both simulation and laboratory results validate this new method, which is easy to start up, as it does not need previous configurations for its implementation, and it presents an economical solution to this problem. The voltage rise problem due to the reverse power flow is one of the main obstacles to expanding the photovoltaic systems (PVSs) in distribution networks. In this paper, a decentralized control method for coordinated control of on-load tap changer (OLTC) transformers and PV inverters, is proposed for the voltage regulation of radial distribution networks. In this method, the allowable voltage range is divided into several zones, and appropriate corrective actions are adaptively taken according to each zone. To reduce the tension on the OLTC, first, the reactive power capability of the PV inverters is employed for the voltage regulation, and if it is insufficient, OLTC is used as the last solution. In this regard, the unused capacity of PV inverters is utilized for the reactive power compensation, considering the grid codes reactive power requirements. Furthermore, decentralized control based on a signaling method is used for coordination between OLTC and PVSs, which eliminates the need for communication links. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by the simulation results for the IEEE 33-bus distribution network, and the impact of different reactive power control methods on the number of OLTC operation is investigated. The phase-to-ground admittance in distribution networks is asymmetric. This asymmetry is aggravated by the arc suppression coil, resulting in zero-sequence overvoltage. The magnitude of zero-sequence overvoltage can exceed the line-to-ground voltage, endangering the operation of electrical equipment. Moreover, after the occurrence of a single-line-to-ground fault, the change law of the three-phase voltage is affected by the zero-sequence overvoltage, leading to misjudgment of the fault phase. Accordingly, this paper proposes a fault phase selection method based on active current injection that can adapt to asymmetric distribution networks. The fault phase is selected by injecting current and calculating the equivalent power supply voltage of the faulty line without increasing the ground-fault current. The high sensitivity of the proposed fault phase selection method was verified for high impedance faults through software simulations and prototype experiments. Moreover, the zero-sequence overvoltage can be suppressed by a single-phase flexible arc suppression device during the normal operation of distribution networks. Plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) charging equipment incorporates protection that ensures that grid disturbances do not damage the charger or vehicle. When the grid voltage sags below 80% of nominal, undervoltage protection is likely to disconnect the charging load from the grid. Most PEV charging will occur overnight, when non-PEV load is at a minimum. This paper argues that PEV voltage-sag response, when synchronized across large numbers of PEVs, could result in the loss of a significant proportion of the total load. It is shown that this load loss can lead to unacceptably high voltages once the initiating event has been cleared. This paper explores the nature of this voltage-rise phenomenon. Analysis tools are developed to assist in determining PEV loading conditions that demarcate acceptable postdisturbance voltage response from unacceptable outcomes. This paper presents an innovative method for fault location in distribution networks based on classical circuit analyses. Two synchronized and few nonsynchronized pre- and during-fault voltages are required at few buses along with the impedancematrix. A new impedance matrix manipulation procedure is proposed so that the distribution system is investigated in partitions across multiple subsystems. This procedure allows the fault location process to be performed by solving systems of determined equations, making the method more technically accessible. The fault is located by analyzing the voltage sag at the terminal-bus of each subsystem separately. The proposed method is validated on the IEEE 33-bus, 12.66 kV distribution system with/without distributed generation (DG). This paper presents an investigation of utilizing dc links to merge heavily meshed urban distribution networks in dense-load areas to increase reliability and expand operational flexibility. It provides a cost-benefit evaluation of utilizing dc-link technology to interconnect three segments of New York City electric distribution networks with complex grid configurations. The outcome of this work highlights the advantages provided by dc links, such as increased reliability and power quality, improved voltage support, and demand relief for feeders at or above capacity limitations. Furthermore, the study shows that dc links may provide a better alternative to transformer installations, feeder upgrades, and/or capacitor additions, and offer the opportunity to postpone large capital investments for system upgrades (such as building a new substation) due to demand increase. This paper proposes a new impedance-based technique to locate all fault types in distribution networks with/without distributed generators. A new procedure to form an impedance matrix using only series impedances of the distribution lines is introduced. The impedance matrix along with the prefault and during-fault voltage phasors at few buses is used to estimate the injection fault current via the least-squares technique. Linear least-squares estimator is utilized if microphasor measurement units (\mu \rmPMUs) are installed along the network. However, a nonlinear least-squares problem solved by the trust-region-reflective algorithm is used when only the voltage magnitudes are provided by smart meters. The operation of the standard protective devices in the distribution networks is used to reduce the computational burden of the proposed method. Also, a generalized measurement placement algorithm is studied using the discovered features of the impedance matrix. In addition, the Sobol's sensitivity analysis is conducted to quantify the importance of different input factors on the fault location accuracy. This paper elucidates a new real time energy management framework for radial active unbalance distribution networks (UDNs) by integrating load shedding and conservation voltage reduction (CVR) techniques. In contrast with the shortsighted real time optimization strategies, the proposed technique accounts offline beneficial aspects in real time optimization platform as time coupled stochastic expressions. Those are further simplified to a mixed integer non-convex programming (MINCP) using merger of Queueing theory and Lyapunov optimization process. To solve the complex MINCP portfolio, a consecutive mixed integer linear programming (c-MILP) based solution method is proposed after adopting necessary linear approximations. After demonstrating on modified IEEE 123 bus test network, it is showed that the proposed real time strategy can provide most energy efficient, secure and reliable operation to the UDNs and can accommodate offline advantageous attributes successfully along with the real time load shedding and CVR constraints. Validating the power flow solutions at OpenDSS platform, it is proved that the proposed c-MILP approach possess fast convergence and provide near optimal power flow solutions. Faults with line breaks occur more and more frequently and are difficult to detect by relay protection device in small-current grounding distribution networks. However, faults with line breaks are more likely to cause security accidents such as fires, overvoltages and electric shocks. Considering the low cost and high reliability of collecting data on the low-voltage (LV) side in distribution networks, this paper proposes a method for distinguishing between faults with line breaks and short-circuit faults on the medium-voltage (MV) side. Voltage amplitude and phase on the LV side of distribution transformer (DT) are analyzed through symmetrical component method. The amplitudes are used to identify two-phase faults with line breaks (TPFs-LBs) and two-phase short-circuit faults (TPFs-SCs); while the phases are selected to distinguish single-line-to-ground faults with line breaks (SLGFs-LBs) from single-line-to-ground faults (SLGFs). In this paper, for the first time, a high-impedance fault indicator (HIFI), to be mounted on the poles of distribution feeders, is proposed to detect and track down the location of high-impedance faults (HIFs). The main contribution of this paper is the investigation of employing the magnetic-field strength signal, measured in the vicinity of the conductors of a feeder, to detect HIFs based on a novel pattern recognition method. The proposed HIFIs should be installed so that the faulted branch identification becomes possible and simple (i.e., at the sending ends of branches). Applying the data for HIFs, insulator leakage current and harmonic load from field tests and for other similar phenomena from simulations has shown high security and dependability of the proposed method as a computational model for HIFI. The paper presents a procedure for fault location in distribution networks, based on the use of the integrated time-frequency wavelet decompositions of the voltage transients associated with the fault-originated travelling waves. The proposed analysis of time-frequency wavelet decompositions has been found to improve the identification accuracy of the frequencies associated to the characteristic patterns of a fault location with respect to a sole frequency-domain wavelet analysis. Several laboratory fault tests, carried out by means of a reduced-scale model of a distribution feeder, are used to illustrate the characteristics and assess the performances of the proposed improved procedure. This paper presents a simple yet effective method for locating faults in radial distribution networks where impedance-based methods are known to have limitations, especially in the presence of inverter-based power sources (IBPS). The proposed approach utilizes the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) to capture the first arrival times of the fault-generated traveling waves. It is assumed that a digital fault recorder (DFR) exists at the terminal node of every lateral, as well as the beginning and end of the main feeder. The detailed derivation of the fault location method is presented, and illustrative fault scenarios are simulated to experimentally verify the proposed algorithm's performance under very diverse conditions. This paper proposes a new and comprehensive approach for optimal sizing and placement of a wind farm (WF) in a radial distribution network (RDN) while considering several factors associated with its reliability, operation, economics and environment impact. The consideration of the reliability aspect is essential to correctly assess the impacts of forced outages of wind turbines in the field. In this context, a sequential Monte Carlo simulation-based technique has been formulated to evaluate the performance of the WF with varying capacities at different locations in the RDN. Additionally, the capability of the WF to perform Volt-Var and Volt-Watt control has been capitalized on to provide voltage support to the grid in compliance with international standards (IEEE 1547-2018). Finally, a combination of Analytic Hierarchy Process and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution has been used to assess and determine the optimal size and location of the WF, based on a selected set of performance criteria, namely cumulative violations of the steady-state voltage range, cumulative losses in RDN, cumulative violations of the line thermal rating, levelized cost of energy, and reduction in carbon emission. A distributed zero-sequence-current (ZSC) carrier signal injection via current transformer (CT) is proposed for underground cable single-phase-to-ground fault location in neutral isolated medium voltage (MV) distribution networks. High-frequency ZSC carrier signal is directly injected to a high-voltage underground cable of an energized distribution network via CT. The injected carrier signal travels along the cable to the receiving center in the substation, and is processed for quick fault line selection and fault location. No external power supplies or signal generators are needed due to the self-contained nature of the injector. The device can be constructed as a sleeve to be mounted around the underground power cable. This permits economical retrofitting to existing installations of power line communication (PLC) devices. In this paper, the operational principle and the application considerations for such an injection device and fault location tricks are explained, followed by the theory behind the proposed technique. In recent years, with the expansion of urban scale and construction of energy infrastructure, more cities construct underground cables to replace overhead lines from the perspective of environment and safety. Thus, more distributed capacitive current flows back to distribution networks under fault conditions and affects the accuracy of fault locating. This paper proposes an iterative modification method of capacitive current to decrease the uncertainty of complex equations with micro synchronous phasor measurement unit (μPMU) data. Firstly, the initial fault location is calculated by using phasor measurement data without the shunt effect of grounding capacitance. Then, the capacitive current is estimated by the initial fault location distance, and the location result is modified by an iterative strategy. Finally, after iteration modification, a more accurate real number solution for complex equations can be obtained for complicated distribution networks with the uncertain capacitive current. The simulation results of a real underground distribution network and a modified IEEE 33 node test feeder in MATLAB/Simulink show that the proposed algorithm has higher accuracy than the traditional methods which do not have the iterative modification method of capacitive current under different fault locations, fault resistances, fault types and the neutral point grounding modes. To improve the accuracy of faulty feeder selection based on zero sequence current mutation, distribution networks with inverter-interfaced distributed generators (IIDGs) are analyzed in detail. It is found that the IIDGs cannot be completely equivalent to a positive sequence current source due to their boosting increments. Thereby, a more accurate IIDG current estimation model based on the Gauss-Seidel method that considers the control strategy at the moment of fault is established. Moreover, a real-time estimation algorithm is introduced for faulty feeder detection to adjust the compensation degree of the Petersen coil. On this basis, this paper proposes a novel faulty feeder detection approach using the zero-sequence current space relative distance between the increments of each feeder and an estimation of the faulty path generated by Kalman filtering (KAF). The feasibility of the proposed approach is demonstrated in both a PSCAD/EMTDC simulation and a MATLAB experimental laboratory. Expansion of the DC distribution networks in the future power system has raised concerns over their stability assessment. To assess stability of the expanded DC distribution networks, the conventional zone aggregation method requires access to not only the nodes connected to the converters but also some other nodes within the DC passive network. However, access to the nodes within the DC passive network is not always feasible as some parts of the DC network may be buried or encapsulated. To address this issue, this paper proposes a new zone aggregation method for impedance-based stability assessment of the expanded DC-distribution networks. Compared with the conventional method, the main advantages of the proposed method are as follow: i) it only utilizes the impedance/admittance information of the nodes connected to the converters. Moreover, all the impedances/admittances can be measured directly without knowing the internal structure and/or parameters; ii) it can assess stability of expanded distribution networks with minimum number of nodes. Performance and effectiveness of the proposed method are evaluated and validated by simulation studies on a 10-bus DC distribution network and a modified IEEE 37-bus system in the Matlab/Simulink software environment. Conservation voltage reduction (CVR) plays an important role in energy savings and shaving peak demand. This paper quantifies energy savings for refrigeration loads (RLs) with experimentally validated air conditioner and refrigerator models. It is demonstrated that peak demand reduction and energy savings exist simultaneously during the implementation of CVR. A 1666-bus real meshed network with residential, small, and large commercial customers is simulated for the calculation of energy savings. Different working patterns: weekday and weekend; weather conditions: hottest and average summer days during peak load of the year; and load types: mixed load (ZIP and RLs) and ZIP load are studied. In addition, the IEEE 8500-node radial system with 100% residential customers is also used to show the energy savings of CVR. It is concluded that the economic benefits of CVR are larger for meshed networks than for radial systems. Routine inspection programs are procedures that utilities can use to improve their power quality standards and public perception. However, due to budget restrictions, it is usually not possible to inspect all elements in the whole concession area. In this scenario, strategies to efficiently allocate available teams at scheduled inspections are an interesting alternative. The challenge is to define which data are relevant and at hand to develop an strategy that is comprehensive, efficient and outperforms the current old fashioned way based on personal experience applied to automated spreadsheets. This paper proposes an approach that deals with a large amount of data from corporate systems as input to a proposed optimization engine based on Genetic Algorithm and heuristics. Primary feeders are split into segments among protection devices, referred to as metazones. The developed tool produces a set of prioritized metazones by maximizing the sum of merit indexes related to loss of energy, voltage and current violations, as well as outages, while satisfying teams’ inspections capacities. Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC) distribution systems have recently been considered as an alternative approach to electrical system infrastructure as they provide the additional flexibility and controllability required to facilitate the integration of more low carbon technologies (LCTs). However, DC protection systems and, more specifically high accuracy DC fault location, have been recognised as a key challenge to facilitating post-fault network maintenance. Most of the existing fault location techniques rely on current derivative or communications-based methods that are either very sensitive to noise or require a high level of data synchronisation. Fault energy has been recognized as a reliable indicator of more accurate fault location estimations. Therefore, this paper develops a mathematical model for describing fault energy during the transient period of DC faults. The method subsequently proposes a new fault let-through energy based DC fault location working strategy to facilitate post-fault network maintenance. The proposed method does not require data synchronisation regardless of the voltage, current, and the size of the converters connected to the LVDC feeder. The capabilities of the proposed fault location strategy are validated against different faults applied on an LVDC test network in PSCAD/EMTDC and shown to be more reliable and accurate than existing methods. Distribution network monitoring has the potential to improve service levels by reporting the origin of fault events and informing the nature of remedial action. To achieve this practically, intelligent systems to automatically recognize the cause of network faults could provide a data driven solution, however, these usually require a large amount of examples to learn from, making their implementation burdensome. Furthermore, the choice of input to such a system in order to make accurate classifications is not always clear. In response to this challenge, this paper contributes a means of using minimal amounts of historical fault data to infer fault cause from substation current data through a novel structural similarity metric applied to the associated power quality waveform. This approach is demonstrated along with disturbance context similarity assessment on an industrially relevant benchmark data set where it is shown to provide an improvement in classification accuracy over comparable techniques. Insulation monitoring is crucial to personal safety and equipment operation in the power distribution system. Recently, with the rapid development of distributed generators, the three-phase voltage-source PWM converter (VSC) is widely used as the bidirectional interface between the dc microgrids and the distribution networks. This paper presents the relationship between the response of insulation monitoring device (IMD) and the neutral-point voltage deviation (NPVD) of VSC, by analyzing the disturbances of the switching function and the dc-side insulation balancing. Then, a method of detecting the NPVD for grid-connected VSC is proposed, based on the dc signal injection and the Duffing oscillator. Furthermore, the proposed method takes the mean and spectrum of the neutral-point voltage as the primal characteristics. Thus, the dc signal injection is adopted to detect the mean of the neutral-point voltage, and the Duffing oscillator is adopted to determine the frequency disturbance of the neutral-point voltage, respectively. The test result confirms the existence of the neutral-point voltage deviation and verifies the availability of the proposed method. Increased monitoring of distribution networks and power system assets present utilities with new opportunities to predict and forestall system failures. Although automated pattern recognition methodologies have given other industries significant advantage, power system operators face additional challenges before these can be realized. The effort of apportioning ground truth to fault data creates a knowledge bottleneck that can make utilizing automatic classification techniques impossible. Surrogate approaches using operational process outputs such as maintenance tickets as labels can be challenging owing to the causal ambiguity of these written records. To approach a solution, this paper demonstrates utilizing natural language processing techniques to disambiguate the free text in maintenance tickets for onward use in supervised learning of fault prediction and classification techniques. In this paper, distributed energy-storage systems (ESSs) are proposed to solve the voltage rise/drop issues in low-voltage (LV) distribution networks with a high penetration of rooftop photovoltaics (PVs). During the peak PV generation period, the voltages are mitigated by charging the ESSs, and the stored energy is discharged for voltage support during the peak load period. The impact of storage devices integrated with the PV source on feeder voltages is investigated in detail. A coordinated control method, which includes distributed and localized controls, is proposed for distributed ESSs. The distributed control using the consensus algorithm regulates the feeder voltages within the required limits, while the localized control regulates the state of charge (SoC) of each ESS within the desired SoC range. The entire control structure ensures voltage regulation while effectively utilizing storage capacity under various operation conditions. To improve the consumption of renewable energy and to meet complex load demands. A model of a multi-terminal flexible DC distribution network with multiple overhead branch lines is constructed. Aiming at frequent non-permanent faults of overhead lines, a fast pilot protection scheme is proposed to cover the whole fault process. Using the hybrid DC circuit breaker (HDCCB) action as the boundary mark, the fast pilot protection can be divided into two phases: post-fault and fault restart. The first phase highlights rapidity, sending a trip command to HDCCB within 1-2 ms after the fault. The second stage emphasizes reliability, and points out that the data of the whole fault process should be fully utilized, and to fully excavate the characteristics of fault current. A multi-time scale and multi-criteria fusion protection scheme is proposed, which can effectively improve the reliability of fault area identification. Finally, a corresponding model was built based on PSCAD, a large number of simulation tests and robustness analysis proved that the proposed fast pilot protection scheme is feasible. With the increasing penetration of renewable energy (RE), the operations of distribution network are threatened and some issues may appear, i.e., large voltage deviation, deterioration of statistic voltage stability, high power loss, etc. In turn, RE accommodation would be significantly impacted. Therefore, we propose a many-objective distribution network reconfiguration (MDNR) model, with the consideration of RE curtailment, voltage deviation, power loss, statistic voltage stability, and generation cost. This aims to assess the trade-off among these objectives for better operations of distribution networks. As the proposed model is a non-convex, non-linear, many-objective optimization problem, it is difficult to be solved. We further propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) assisted multi-objective bacterial foraging optimization (DRL-MBFO) algorithm. This algorithm combines the advantages of DRL and MBFO, and is targeted to find the Pareto front of proposed MDNR model with better searching efficiency. Finally, we conduct case study on the modified IEEE 33-bus, 69-bus, and 118-bus power distribution systems, and results verify the effectiveness of the MDNR model and outperformance of the proposed DRL-MBFO. This paper proposes a novel method for fault location in distribution networks using compressive sensing. During fault and prefault voltages are measured by smart meters along the feeders. The voltage sag vector and impedance matrix produce a current vector that is sparse enough with one nonzero element. This element corresponds to the bus at which a fault occurs. Due to the limited number of smart meters installed at primary feeders, our system equation is underdetermined. Therefore, the \ell ^1-norm minimization method is used to calculate the current vector. Primal-dual interior point (PDIP) and the log barrier algorithm (LBA) are utilized to solve the optimization problem with and without measurement noises, respectively. Our proposed method is implemented on a real 13.8-kV, 134-bus distribution network when single-phase, three-phase, double-phase, and double-phase-to-ground short circuits occur. Due to the lack of available tests and equipment, the ability of master stations to process faults in power distribution systems cannot be evaluated systematically or comprehensively during their commissioning. As a solution, this paper presents an injection methodology that consists of a research system and an evaluation technique. The same system is also employed for on-site tests. Standardized test networks and corresponding cases are integrated into the system, where a traversal fault-setting scheme can specify the location for short-circuit faults anywhere along the test network. The Tabu Search is adopted to optimize network reconfiguration for complex fault scenarios. Additionally, the system can validate the configuration and settings of peripheral equipment, including relays. Continuity in power supply for the consumers is a permanent concern from the utilities, pursued with the development of technological solutions in order to improve the performance of network restoration conditions. Using remotely controlled switches corresponds to one possible approach to reach such an improvement and gives some convenient remote resources, such as the fault detect, isolation, and transfer loads. This paper presents a methodology implemented in a computer programming language for allocation of these devices in electric distribution systems based on the analytic hierarchical process (AHP) method. The main contributions focus on considering the impact of installing remotely controlled switches in the reliability indices and the AHP decision-making algorithm for the switches allocation. This paper shows a new hybrid method for risk assessment regarding interruptions in sensitive processes due to faults in electric power distribution systems. This method determines indices related to long duration interruptions and short duration voltage variations (SDVV), such as voltage sags and swells in each customer supplied by the distribution network. Frequency of such occurrences and their impact on customer processes are determined for each bus and classified according to their corresponding magnitude and duration. The method is based on information regarding network configuration, system parameters and protective devices. It randomly generates a number of fault scenarios in order to assess risk areas regarding long duration interruptions and voltage sags and swells in an especially inventive way, including frequency of events according to their magnitude and duration. Based on sensitivity curves, the method determines frequency indices regarding disruption in customer processes that represent equipment malfunction and possible process interruptions due to voltage sags and swells. This paper presents an efficient mixed-integer linear formulation for long term maintenance schedule of overhead lines. The proposed formulation is based on risk management approach and utilizes the model of decoupled risk factors. The proposed methodology yields a significant computational saving comparing to the previously reported dynamic programming. Risk management approach enables the asset managers to consider the actual condition of electrical equipment and expected consequence of their failures. Furthermore, the decoupled risk strategy in con- junction with the mixed-integer linear programming formulation establishes a precise description of time-dependent deterioration failure rate and provides the ability to determine the most cost-effective maintenance scenario while satisfying the reliability constraints. The proposed approach is tested on the Roy Billinton Test System distribution feeders and a typical real size case study. Abstract-This paper proposes a methodology for placement of sectionalizing switches in distribution networks in the presence of distributed generation sources. The multiobjective considerations are handled using a fuzzy approach. The primary objective is reliability improvement with consideration of economic aspects. Thus, the objectives are defined as reliability improvement and minimization of the cost of sectionalizing switches. A fuzzy membership function is defined for each term in the objective function according to relevant conditions. Some considerations incorporated in the proposed model are relocation of existing switches and operating constraints on distribution networks and distributed generation (DG) sources during post-fault service restoration. The Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is adopted to solve the fuzzy multiobjective problem efficiently. In the last decade, distributed generation, with its various technologies, has increased its presence in the energy mix presenting distribution networks with challenges in terms of evaluating the technical impacts that require a wide range of network operational effects to be qualified and quantified. The load unbalance and the nonlinear loads result in a significant neutral current in the three-phase four-wire distribution power system. The Zig-Zag transformer has been proposed to attenuate the neutral current of the three-phase four-wire distribution power system. In this paper, an analysis is carried out and computer simulation is used to evaluate the performance of the Zig-Zag transformer under ideal and nonideal power conditions. The simulation results show that (a) the Zig-Zag transformer can effectively attenuate the neutral current and zero-sequence harmonic currents on the utility side under the balanced utility voltage, (b) the utility side neutral current becomes larger under the unbalanced utility voltage or the distorted utility voltage with zero sequence harmonic components after applying the Zig-Zag transformer, (c) the insertion of an inductor in the utility side of the neutral conductor can alleviate overloading of the neutral current caused by the unbalanced utility voltages and the distorted utility voltages with zero sequence harmonic components. This paper presents a modified power control to integrate inverter-based distributed generation (DG) in distribution networks. This control is designed for mitigating the maloperation of the overcurrent protection coordination, due to the DG current contribution during the fault. The proposed power control introduces a new approach to perform the inverter control by using new orthogonal components of the grid voltages that provide a modified controlled power. Using the proposed methodology, the injected current to the grid during faults is limited to the DG-rated level. By controlling the reference power based on a proposed function of the per-unit terminal voltage, the injected current is limited to a desired value. Abstract-In this paper, we present the greedy reconfiguration algorithm (GRA) and the fast greedy reconfiguration algorithm (FGRA)-two reconfiguration algorithms that minimize the energy not supplied (ENS) of medium-voltage (MV)-distribution network (DNs). The algorithms are derived from a graph-theoretic model for the MV-DNs and an iterative formulation for the ENS. Given a DN composed of n loads, GRA yields an initial radial topology with minimal ENS after executing n - 1 iterations of a multistage decision process. Next, GRA executes a verification algorithm to evaluate all of those candidate topologies randomly discarded during the decision process. After the second stage, GRA announces the optimal topology as well as the minimum ENS of the system. The second algorithm proposed is called FGRA and is obtained when heuristic graph compression is performed throughout the execution of GRA. The aforementioned graph compression reduces the dimension of the problem, thereby producing substantial savings in computing time at the expense of possibly achieving a suboptimal solution.
