Voltage rise caused by high levels of distributed generation is manifesting as voltage regulation challenges for many electricity network service providers. In this environment it would be ideal to reduce supply voltage magnitudes, however, many network operators are hesitant to do so due to concerns related to consumer appliance performance at reduced supply voltage magnitudes. Voltage regulation requirements are defined by network standards and network service providers must ensure voltages remain within specified limits. Through an evaluation of domestic appliance performance when supplied at various voltage magnitudes, this paper examines the impact of varying voltage levels on residential appliances. Equipment energy demand, operation and actuation were monitored for each applied voltage magnitude. While no equipment failures were recorded, appliance behaviour varied significantly with applied voltage magnitude. Individual appliance conservation voltage reduction (CVR) factors have also been established. The results highlight the importance of good voltage regulation and provide substantiated appliance performance figures for future studies. The outcomes of this paper allow electricity network service providers to understand the implications of supply voltage magnitude on domestic appliance performance, whether it be understating of the impact of higher voltage magnitudes caused by distributed generation or implications of reducing voltage magnitudes to provide headroom for distributed generation integration. Single horizontal and vertical grounding electrodes are often used for an earth connection of the lightning protection system. However, there are many practical situations when such electrodes have to be enhanced for better efficiency and replaced by multiple horizontal, vertical and/or inclined electrodes. This paper presents a systematic approach to evaluating and comparing the lightning performance of such grounding arrangements based on simple formulas. The contributions of this paper are: It is shown that impulse impedance Z may be derived from known formulas for low-frequency grounding resistance R; a new definition of effective length is introduced that allows for such a derivation; a collection of accurate formulas for R of all considered grounding electrode arrangements is presented; and a new concept of “effective volume” is described that enables a simple procedure to increase electrodes’ effective length. The new formulas for R, Z, and effective length of the different electrode arrangements allow an analysis that might help search for a choice of cost-effective configuration and dimensions of the grounding systems in the early design stage. This paper proposes a systematic method for the identification of the load circuit parameters (say the $\boldsymbol{R}$ , $\boldsymbol{L}$ , and $\boldsymbol{C}$ elements) based only on the information of the instantaneous voltage and current measured at the point of common coupling (pcc). Geometric Algebra (GA) and concepts of differential geometry are used to produce a rigorous mathematical framework. The identification is formulated as a multidimensional geometrical problem that is solved conveniently by means of GA. Once the passive elements of the load have been identified, the active and reactive powers can be computed from first electromagnetic principles (Maxwell Equations). The theory is general and is verified with linear and nonlinear circuits. The paper shows single-phase circuits but the theory can be extended to three-phase circuits. The method is easy to program and has shown to be very robust for all tested cases. Because of its generality, the method presented will find applications beyond electric circuits. It is well known that for high voltage transmission lines in the range of 245 kV–525 kV, particularly in regions of high ground resistivity, lightning back flashover problems could be a major concern. Line arresters have been used successfully to address the problem. Underbuilt ground wires have been proposed as a viable alternative. The present paper shows that the full potential of additional ground wires could be achieved by optimizing their position on the tower. Such optimization often results in a preferred position at the level, or higher than the attachment height of the lower phase conductors; therefore the designation Embedded Ground Conductor. An essential requirement is that such positioning does not infringe in any way on the dielectric integrity of the electrical clearances and, under the influence of induced charge, does not become a source of positive streamers that may lead to additional radio or audible noise. It is found that a streamer- inhibited conductor, when properly placed, fully satisfies the above requirements. It is determined that for 245 kV, 345 kV and 420 kV lines, a streamer-inhibited embedded conductor could improve the back flashover rate by a factor of 10 or more [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fast and accurate power-flow methods are of great importance, especially in near real-time optimal operation of power systems. This importance will be even more highlighted in the presence of more repetitions of power-flow calculations, which cause more computational complexities in optimization problems. As a solution, in this paper, a novel fast and accurate approach of linear power-flow formulation is proposed. Principles of the proposed approach are based on dividing power-flow calculations into base and variable parts. To this aim, at first, system modeling of base and variable parts are presented. For the base-part modeling, utilizing a nonlinear power-flow, an accurate base power-flow (BPF) is extracted. Afterwards, by linearizing the power system around the BPF, variable-part model which is the result of a linear fitting process, is obtained. Then, it is shown that the variable-part of the operating point is always a function of the obtained base-part and variable-part models. In this paper, by focusing on the stochastic application of the proposed approach, different uncertainties in a distribution system are considered. Finally, numerical results carried out in the Matlab environment, for a IEEE 34-bus standard distribution system and then a 1486-bus case study, verify the performance of the proposed approach. This paper presents the three-phase impulse overvoltage measured at the terminal of a 10 kV distribution line when the impulse current was injected into the phase conductor of the distribution line. The overvoltage observation station was installed at the terminal of the line to record the three-phase overvoltage waveforms. It is shown that the struck phase overvoltage consists of three components including the negative pulse, the stage of residual voltage maintenance and the overshoot oscillation part. The observed negative peak values of the struck phase overvoltage range from −85.4 kV to −96.0 kV in three different injected impulse levels at 90,120,150 kV charging voltage. The duration of residual voltage depends on the duration time of injected current. Furthermore, there is a strong positive relationship between the oscillation amplitude of the struck phase overvoltage and the injected current amplitude. The peak amplitudes of three-phase overvoltage always have the following magnitude relationship: struck phase C > induced phase B > induced phase A. The voltage coupling coefficients of induced phases will not exceed 0.4. The test method proposed in this paper will be helpful to the research on the lightning overvoltage response characteristics of the distribution line and the protection analysis of arresters. The converter transformers are reported to fail generally on the thyristor-valve side, where complex alternating voltage waveforms superimposed with dc voltages would occur. The effect of these waveforms on the failure and endurance of the valve side winding insulation of the transformers is not yet understood, which is investigated here. In this paper, the voltage waveforms occurring in a converter transformer are obtained through PSCAD/EMTDC for a typical double pole ±500 kV, 1000 MW DC-link HVDC transmission system based on the CIGRE benchmark system. The waveforms are then amplified using a High Voltage amplifier for experimental breakdown investigations. Stepped-stress damage equalization method has been used for obtaining the lifetime characteristics from failure data. A comparison with life curve under pure sinusoidal and actual alternating voltages with superimposed dc and harmonic voltage has been made to understand why the converter transformers generally failed on the valve side. The Rogowski coil transducer's integrator will amplify the transmission error, which may lead to mal-operation of the relay. In this paper, a novel method of line relay based on the differential output of Rogowski coil is proposed. Besides, an improved fast distance relay based on the differential output of Rogowski coil is presented. Based on the equal transfer process of transmission lines(ETPTL), the voltage signal should be processed by the virtual Rogowski coil to solve the inconsistent transfer problem between voltage and current. Furthermore, this paper also presents the reconstruction method of voltage at the fault point and the least-square algorithm to solve the R-L differential equation, so as to improve the algorithm accuracy. Furthermore, the equal transfer process error of the virtual Rogowski coil is analyzed in the paper, and the design principle of low pass filter is also proposed. Simulation results and experiment results demonstrate that the improved fast distance relay scheme has high operation speed, which is signed prior to other distance relay schemes. Protection of microgrids at the Point of Interconnection (POI) is a challenging task. Particularly, single-line-to-ground (SLG) faults on interconnection lines are difficult to detect using the fault current detection relays if the microgrid is ungrounded at utility side of its interconnection transformer; such microgrid contributes very low fault current, which disappears once the utility feeder breaker opens. Other common schemes for protection of microgrid interconnection line against SLG faults include Direct Transfer Trip (DTT) and over-voltage relay (59G). The main challenges associated with these methods are installation and maintenance costs of high-speed communication system, sensitivity of relay settings, and delayed fault clearing time due to selectivity requirements. To address such concerns, this paper proposes the use of a distance relay at the microgrid/LV side of the interconnection transformer to provide protection against SLG faults on the interconnection line at the utility/HV side. The designed distance relay executes an enhanced apparent impedance calculation using residual voltage compensation to correctly detect the fault, properly measure the fault location, and timely isolate the fault. In this paper, various scenarios are analyzed using ASPEN and PSCAD simulation tools to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for protecting the microgrid interconnection line under different fault scenarios. The inrush current generated by power transformer energization (TE) causes voltage sag of the nearby bus, the typical residual voltage of the voltage sag caused by transformer energization (VSTE) is about 0.7 p.u.--0.9 p.u. and lasts for a longer duration, which may lead to the sensitive equipment trips. This paper proposes an estimation method of voltage sag frequency considering VSTE. Firstly, based on the maximum entropy method, the residual flux distribution is calculated by considering the relationship between the residual flux and closing angle at the moment of TE. The voltage sag waveform caused by TE is calculated based on the estimation of the probability distribution of residual flux, to evaluate VSTE objectively and comprehensively. Secondly, this paper proposes a non-rectangular voltage sag equivalent frequency statistical method based on multiple magnitude-duration (MMD) function, to avoid the overestimation of voltage sag frequency by the traditional methods. Furthermore, this paper proposes an assessment algorithm of voltage sag frequency. Finally, the simulation of IEEE-30 test system verifies the necessity and correctness of the proposed method. Autonomous power systems with a single power station and a high-voltage (HV) network may be susceptible to overvoltage instability, especially during light-load conditions. Moreover, in low inertia systems, considerable frequency excursions may be observed after disturbances. To deal with voltage and frequency stability problems in such isolated power systems, several measures should be taken, such as rules for adequate automatic voltage control of the synchronous generators and load-tap-changers (LTCs), and/or adequate design of actions applied during emergency system conditions such as reactors switching, and redesigning underfrequency load shedding taking into account overvoltage problems. The effectiveness of the proposed countermeasures against overvoltage instability in autonomous power systems is illustrated in this paper. In 2016, the autonomous power system of the Greek island of Rhodes experienced similar voltage/frequency problems leading to a blackout. This event has been accurately reconstructed in this paper. The application of the suggested countermeasures during the simulation of the 2016 blackout event in Rhodes, further highlighted the effectiveness of these measures, providing a guideline for similar cases. Electrical equipment of the floating nuclear power plant operates in a long-term vibration environment. Ground faults occur frequently and are often accompanied by arc, a reliable arc suppression algorithm for the generator stator winding is necessary. In this paper, an active arc suppression method is proposed by connecting a controllable voltage source to the generator neutral point. Through regulating the neutral point voltage to be equal in amplitude and opposite in phase to the fault potential, the fault point voltage can be clamped to a low level to achieve arc suppression. Since the generator's phase potential contains certain harmonic components, the controllable voltage source includes fundamental and third-order harmonic components. To accurately calculate the output voltage, online calculation methods for the fault location, fault potential and grounding capacitance are proposed. The accuracy of the fault location method is verified by simulation and dynamic test. The Ultra High Voltage (UHV) converter transformer may generate serious inrush current during closing. It will cause commutation voltage distortion and easily result in commutation failure of converters on the same commutation bus. Due to the change of flux amplitude and phase caused by closing resistance in the Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) system, it is difficult to determine the closing time of the converter transformer when considering the influence of residual flux. Therefore, this paper first analyses the existing closing resistance strategy, and constructs the magnetic bias function according to the influence characteristics of closing resistance on the flux and phase. Then an inrush current suppression strategy based on magnetic bias simulation is proposed for star connection and delta connection of UHV converter transformers, which can accurately calculate the ideal closing time of mutual cancellation between the residual flux and bias flux during closing. Finally, the no-load closing model of the UHV converter transformer is established by PSCAD/EMTDC for simulation analysis of the feasibility, real-time verification is carried out using the RTDS closed-loop experimental platform. In actual line-commutated converter based high- voltage direct-current (LCC-HVDC) projects, multiple HVDC transmission lines are usually installed on the same tower to save transmission corridors and reduce construction costs. However, electromagnetic coupling effect between adjacent lines can cause commutation failure (CF) in the non-fault poles when a line or pole fails. Hence, this paper deeply investigates the mechanism and the prevention strategy of CFs caused by line coupling effect in single- and double-circuit HVDC systems. The influencing factors of line coupling effect and the coupling characteristics under fault conditions are analyzed first based on the modeling of parallel transmission lines and the traveling wave theory. Then the mechanism of CF caused by line coupling effect is investigated with the consideration of different fault conditions, different line structures, and different system operation modes. Based on the above analyses, prevention strategies for CFs of non-fault poles in single- and double-circuit systems are proposed. The increasing penetration of distributed renewable energy sources drastically alters the dynamic characteristics of distribution networks (DNs). Therefore, several equivalent models have been recently proposed, to analyze more accurately the complex behavior of modern DNs. However, relatively simple models are still commonly used in practice for dynamic power system studies. In addition, dynamic equivalent models for DNs are sensitive to different operating conditions and there is lack of systematic understanding of their performance. Scope of this paper is to propose a methodology for identifying the applicability range in terms of accuracy and generalization capability of several conventional and newly developed equivalent models for the dynamic analysis of modern DNs. A set of metrics is used for the modelling accuracy assessment and a sensitivity analysis framework is introduced to fully quantify the generalization capabilities of DN equivalent models. Multilevel converters (MLCs) are pioneers in the field of electrical energy conversion. From the classification of MLCs, modular multilevel converter (MMC) is top-rated due to its attractive structure and performance. The modular nature and no need for isolated DC resources are two significant advantages of this converter. However, the need for many sensors to control its performance is a considerable drawback. In addition, the internal circulating current in the MMC causes losses, decreases efficiency, and increases the voltage ripple of capacitors. This paper proposes combining a new capacitor voltage sorting method and an open-loop controller based on arms energy estimation to control the MMC using two voltage sensors in the arms and one current sensor at the output. The proposed method ensures continuous voltage balancing of the capacitors and removes multiple voltage sensors from sub-modules (SMs). Negative-sequence current is required to be intentionally injected to support the power grid or compensate the imbalanced load in asymmetrical faults utilizing STATCOM. However, the extreme compensation range of negative-sequence current injection becomes complicated when grid voltage becomes asymmetrical. This article presents a novel off-line strategy for negative-sequence current compensation under two typical kinds of asymmetrical grid faults — single-phase voltage drop and double-phase voltage drop, with the following two benefits simultaneously: maximizing negative current compensation capacity; avoiding iterations and reducing computation burdens. In this paper, the mechanism of DC voltage balancing among three phases in STATCOM is analyzed and a new identification method of negative-sequence current compensation range is explored out. To simplify the calculation, this paper takes the ratio of negative-sequence reactive (Iq-) and active (Id-) current as a variable (s). In this way, the relationship between the extreme compensation range, asymmetrical voltage sag depth of power grid h is drawn with MATLAB. Different from the previous iterative method, the off-line identification method is applied to avoid huge iterations. By fitting the curve, the precise ranges of negative-sequence current compensation under different asymmetrical grid faults are approximated as simple polynomials, thus significantly reducing the computation burdens. The ever-increasing integration of non-dispatchable distributed generation, i.e., renewable energy sources (RES), arises new challenges in the field of power system's reliability. Distribution network reconfiguration (DNR) is a cost-effective approach for the distribution system operator (DSO) that wishes to enhance system's reliability without infrastructure upgrades. This paper introduces a novel path-based mixed-integer second-order cone programming model to optimally solve the reliability-oriented DNR problem. The DSO's objectives that are optimized are: a) improvement of distribution system's reliability indices and b) minimization of power losses. The proposed model is enriched with a scenario-based stochastic programming formulation that considers multiple levels of load and RES production. The standard 33-nodes distribution system and a real-world 83-nodes distribution system are employed to prove the efficiency and applicability of the model. Firstly, the multi-objective nature of the reliability-oriented DNR problem is investigated by conducting a sensitivity analysis, which reveals a trade-off region between reliability indices and power losses. Moreover, the obtained results show different global optimal solutions when the variability of load and RES production is considered. This paper widens the application of a testing protocol for overhead line insulators introduced by TERNA. Testing results relevant to three groups of Room Temperature Vulcanized pre-coated cap-and-pin insulators removed from High Voltage Alternate Current and Extra-High Voltage Alternate Current Italian lines after different years of service are reported and statistically processed; the third group is treated here for the first time and new results for the other two groups are included. Among the various tests prescribed in the protocol, focus is on the Quick Flashover test, with the aim to examine and compare the flashover voltages of all three groups as a function of service time. The dependence of flashover voltage on electric field is also analyzed and a model correlating flashover voltage with field and time is proposed for the first time. It is confirmed that the flashover voltages provided by the Quick Flashover test can be considered as a diagnostic property of Room Temperature Vulcanized insulators, as they drop with the ageing time and the electric field. As large-scale offshore wind farms are integrated into the power grid, a hybrid multi-infeed HVDC (HMIDC) system including both LCC-HVDC and VSC-HVDC links is facing a critical steady-state voltage stability problem which mainly stems from a weak AC system under high-level DC power injections. To overcome this challenge, this paper proposes a general steady-state voltage stability analysis to accurately measure the critical voltage stability point of HMIDC systems. In this paper, a typical HMIDC system is firstly modeled as a general dual-infeed system composed of an LCC-HVDC, a VSC-HVDC, and a virtual equivalent voltage source behind a virtual equivalent impedance at the AC side. Then a hybrid power sensitive factor (HPSF) is established to indicate the critical voltage stability point with the consideration of dynamic power-voltage characteristics of HVDC links, as well as operational changes in AC system (e.g. dynamics of excitation voltage control in generator and network topology change). Finally, a general voltage stability index, called hybrid generalized short circuit ratio (HGSCR), is further derived to effectively explain the critical voltage stability point of HMIDC systems. Moreover, multiple comparative studies with existing voltage stability indices are conducted in this paper to verify the effectiveness of the proposed general steady-state voltage stability analysis by using both PSCAD/EMTDC™ power flow and time-domain simulations. In this paper, a self-adaptive protection system is proposed for adjusting the time dial (TD) of reclosers found in electrical power distribution systems (EPDSs). The self-adjustment is carried out in both phase and ground protection. The methodology considers the fuses along the feeder to obtain the fuse-saving philosophy. This feature allows less interference on the protection system already implemented by the electrical power distribution utilities. This methodology also allows using other frameworks, such as the estimation of the fault distance. The software used for computer modeling and simulation was PSCAD™/EMTDC™. The flexibility provided by the method, which allows the incorporation of new logic and changes in decision-making, resulted in an adaptive method with a good performance against different locations, types, and fault impedance. It also resulted in better coordination between the protection devices (PDs). With the emergence of the hybrid multi-infeed high voltage direct current (HMIDC) system, there is complex dynamic interaction between the AC/DC system and converter stations, while the interaction mechanism of the HMIDC system is unclear. For this purpose, this paper establishes the HMIDC linearized model based on the motion equation concept. Then, after decoupling and reconstructing the interaction path of the HMIDC system, the damping coefficients are derived. The AC system strength and voltage source converter (VSC) terminal voltage controller parameters are selected to analyze the impacts on damping coefficients, and the interaction mechanism of the HMIDC system is analyzed. In order to solve the potential instability issue, an additional damping controller in the VSC terminal voltage loop is proposed to enhance the voltage stability of HMIDC system, which is realized by adjusting the reactive power/amplitude coupling damping coefficient. Finally, the RT-LAB-based hardware-in-the-loop experiments verify the accuracy of the interaction mechanism analysis of the HMIDC system and the effectiveness of the proposed controller. In DC distribution networks, the uncertainties of renewable energies and loads cause frequent voltage fluctuations. In this paper, a voltage regulation strategy based on the combined coordination of centralized optimal control (COC) and adaptive droop control (ADC) is proposed for droop-controlled DC distribution networks. In the COC strategy, the operation reference power of voltage source converters (VSCs) is optimized using the bus injection power measurements to improve the voltage profile and balance the power loading rates of different VSCs. The VSC capacity margin constraint is established to ensure that the capacity margin of each VSC is sufficient to cope with the unexpected fluctuation of loads and renewable energies. Then, an ADC strategy is adopted to handle voltage fluctuation between adjacent two COCs. In the ADC strategy, the operation reference power of the VSCs is further adjusted to recover the voltages. The voltage regulation is achieved based on the relationship among the VSC voltages and the minimum/maximum voltages of the whole network, which does not depend on the information of each nodal voltage and thus real-time network communication is avoided. This paper reports the waveform characteristics and parameters of the overvoltage at the terminal of a 1.5 km 10 kV distribution line by direct triggered lightning. The three-phase overvoltage exhibited three kinds of waveforms, all including the initial rising process of the negative peak, the transition from negative peak to the positive peak or the residual voltage, and the subsequent oscillation process. It is observed that the negative peak value of the three-phase overvoltage is between −8.2 kV and −96.1 kV and the rise time of negative peak is between 3.2 μs and 31.7 μs, while the corresponding peak value of the return stroke current is between 3.3 kA and 32.9 kA. When the return stroke current is relatively small, the negative peak value of the direct struck phase overvoltage is twice or more than that of the indirect struck phase. When it is larger, the negative peak value of the indirect struck phase overvoltage is much closer to that of direct struck phase. There is good linear relation between the negative peak value of the indirect struck phase overvoltage and the peak value of the lightning return stroke current, with correlation coefficient being 0.98 and 0.90. To calibrate non-contact sensors with fast response and high scale factor, it is critical to develop step pulse generators capable of generating standard high voltage step pulses and accurately measuring the generated waveform. In this paper, two types of step pulse generators are designed with output voltages of 2 kV and 100 kV. The 2 kV step pulse generator can generate a step pulse with a rise time of ∼300 ps and an adjustable pulse width. A step pulse with a rise time less than 5 ns and a pulse width over 1 μs can be generated with the 100 kV step pulse generator. The uncertainty of 2 kV step pulse generator is then analyzed by simulations and experiments. Finally, a performance comparison with step pulse generators in previous studies is carried out. Voltage sag insurance (VSI) is an effective measure to reduce the voltage sag loss and risk for enterprises with insufficient mitigation confidence or economic ability. However, due to the lack of understanding of voltage sag risk (VSR), it is difficult for power utilities to identify the enterprises with VSI demands, and it is also unable to realize differentiated premium according to different enterprises' situations. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes an improved voltage sag premium model based on VSR. Firstly, the VSR factors are analyzed, such as the hazard, the vulnerability, the exposure. The process immune time is introduced to describe the vulnerability. Based on the traditional consideration of only the ability of users to resist voltage sag, the ability of users to recover from voltage sag is further considered. Then, the risk evaluation model of voltage sag is established. The evaluation results can help power utilities to judge whether enterprises have the demand of VSI. Finally, the improved premium model of VSI based on VSR is constructed to ensure the differentiation and rationalization of the premium. Although the harmonics interaction plays a vital role in causing commutation failure (CF) in an ultra HVDC (UHVDC) system with hierarchical connection, it has not been sufficiently considered in previous work. In this paper, the electric interaction among the inverter valves of the UHVDC system with hierarchical connection during receiving system fault transient process is demonstrated. Moreover, the mechanism of CFs in UHVDC system with hierarchical connection is also investigated via the analysis of harmonics interaction. After the AC fault occurs, the appearance processes of the local commutation failure (LCF) and concurrent commutation failure (CCF) are divided into several stages and interpreted by schematic diagrams. And the characteristics of each stage are also concluded. In addition, a coordinated CF prevention scheme based on harmonics and DC current detection is proposed to mitigate the CFs in UHVDC system with hierarchical connection. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified via a $\pm 1100$ kV UHVDC transmission system under various short circuit ratio values and AC-side coupling strengths. This paper presents a new voltage support (VS) strategy for photovoltaic (PV) systems based on voltage sensitivity analysis to enhance the dynamic voltage stability (DVS) of islanded microgrids (MGs). Every network contains different characteristics. In particular, MGs have unique features compared to utility grids such as high resistance to reactance ratio (R/X). Consequently, injection of both active and reactive current is likely to improve the DVS of the islanded MG. Therefore, instead of engaging the entire capacity to reactive current injection which is performed in conventional voltage support strategy, both the active and reactive current is injected in the proposed strategy. On contrary, without considering the fact that each network contains distinctive characteristics, other strategies with both active and reactive current injection provide fixed active and reactive current which are uniform for all networks. To convey the network distinctive features on VS strategy, voltage sensitivity subject to active and reactive current injection is used in the proposed strategy. As a consequence, unlike other fixed active and reactive current strategies, the proposed strategy provides unique combination of active and reactive current for every network. The concept and derivation of the proposed strategy is clearly described. Network sensitivity analysis is carried out to determine the voltage sensitivity coefficients. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is theoretically demonstrated and also compared with other strategies. Case studies are carried out on two different islanded MGs. The results show that the proposed voltage support strategy is capable of enhancing the DVS of islanded MGs by mitigating a possible instability, and by restoring the voltage faster than other strategies. Transformer-customer relationship identification refers to the determination of the physical connection relationship of electricity end-customers and their corresponding transformers. Such connection relationship is critical for distribution utilities to maintain their end-customer profiles. However, management of transformer-customer relationship becomes one of the most emerging challenges due to large number of end-customers and lack of measurement devices in low-voltage distribution systems. To address the above issue, this paper proposes an end-customer data-driven method to identify transformer-customer relationship in low-voltage distribution grid by utilizing the customer field data obtained from advanced metering infrastructure. Specifically, the incidence convolution identification method is proposed to build up the unique mapping relationship between end-customers and their transformers based on the principle of energy conservation. Then the voltage correlation maximization model based on Markov Random Field is proposed, where the voltage correlation matrix is exacted and combined with the adjacency matrix to establish an optimization model to correct the potential abnormal transformer-customer relationship. This paper proposes a novel reactive power-based control strategy for single-phase PV inverters (PVIs) to simultaneously improve voltage unbalance (VU) and voltage regulation (VR) in low-voltage distribution networks. The proposed strategy relies on communication links between neighboring PVIs to exchange limited data. In this strategy, each PVI finds communication paths between itself and the closest neighboring ones connected to other phases. Then, using the obtained paths and the maximum and the minimum voltage magnitude of the grid, PVIs improve both VU and VR at the same time. The performance of the proposed control strategy is evaluated by various simulation studies using the IEEE European low-voltage test feeder and considering different operational conditions. In addition, the impacts of moving clouds and a failure in the communication links have been assessed. The simulation results exhibit that using the proposed control strategy, the voltage magnitude of all the nodes will remain within the allowed limits and at the same time, the phase voltage unbalance factor will be also significantly improved. Soil conductivity and permittivity have a substantial influence on lightning-electromagnetic transients in power system. In this paper, lightning-induced voltages are computed on a multi-conductor overhead line due to nearby first and subsequent return strokes. Besides, this study considers the longitudinal complex inductance of the line due to the penetration depth of electromagnetic fields through finitely conducting ground as well as the frequency dependent soil parameters using the finite-difference time-domain method. Various case studies in light of variations of return stroke velocity, line height, and soil conductivity are explored for thoughtful investigations. The obtained results reveal that the influence of this complex inductance on peak values of lightning induced voltages changes with varying the return stroke velocity. Also, the frequency dependence of soil parameters markedly impacts the computed lightning-induced voltages particularly for poor soil conductivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The strength concept is an important tool for voltage stability evaluation of emerging hierarchical-infeed LCC-UHVDC (HIDC) systems. However, the complex inter-inverter interactions in such systems have caused significant difficulties for the strength assessment. This makes the accuracy of earlier strength assessment indices limited due to empirical analysis rather than rigorous theoretical reasoning. Thus in this paper, the hierarchical-infeed voltage interaction factor (HVIF) index is firstly utilized to quantitatively depict the complex inter-inverter interactions in HIDC systems. The use of the HVIF enables these interactions to be effectively incorporated into the subsequent strength assessment by proposing the hierarchical-infeed interactive effective short-circuit ratio (HIESCR) strength index. The critical HIESCR (CHIESCR) defined to delineate the voltage stability limit also evaluates to consistently 1.0 such that the distance between the HIESCR and CHIESCR is naturally an accurate stability margin. Since the HIESCR is developed based on the rigorous theoretical reasoning, it is more accurate than earlier indices for voltage stability evaluation. Moreover, the parametric dependence analysis of the HIESCR versus various system parameters and rated operation variables is conducted. This offers a comprehensive perspective for better understanding of the strength variation characteristics. Finally, case study in the modified IEEE 118-bus system validates the HIESCR. Nowadays, nonlinear loads such as load commutated inverter (LCI) drives are being used by industrial sector throughout the world. However, despite the LCI drive uses low-cost thyristors and their corresponding controllers, which have high efficiency and low manufacturing cost, there are concerns regarding the use of LCI drives which are two-fold: (i) they generate harmonics and (ii) they are sensitive to voltage sags occurring at their PCC. In the literature, passive harmonic filters have been suggested to address the former concern and therefore various filter designing techniques have been introduced. However, the need to elaborate a cost-effective filter to address both concerns regarding LCI drive operation has been neglected. Therefore, this paper presents an innovative approach for designing passive filters which can decrease the harmonic distortions generated by LCI drives while ensuring more reliable annual operation of these equipment. Besides, other aspects of passive filter designing, such as eliminating detuning effects, resonance elimination and harmonic loading of capacitors, have been taken into account to provide a general and practical filter designing approach for real industrial applications. The paper addresses an improved inner current reference calculation to be employed in the control of modular multilevel converters operating during either balanced or unbalanced conditions. The suggested reference calculation is derived based on the AC and DC additive and differential voltage components applied to the upper and lower arms of the converter. In addition, the impacts caused not only by the AC network’s impedances but also by the MMC’s arm impedances are also considered during the derivation of the AC additive current reference expressions. Another issue discussed in this article regards that singular voltage conditions, where the positive-sequence component is equal to the negative one, may occur not only in the AC network but also internally (within the converter’s applied voltages). Several different inner current reference calculation methods are compared and their applicability during the former fault conditions is analyzed. Accurate faulty phase detection under single-line-to-ground (SLG) fault is the basis of the emerging voltage-based fault arc suppression technology. Most conventional faulty phase recognition criteria assume the distributed line-to-ground parameters are symmetrical, therefore suffering invalidity in actual distribution networks especially under high-resistance ground-fault conditions. This paper firstly analyzes the magnitude and phase angle variation models of the phase-to-ground voltages before and after the SLG fault. Considering the asymmetrical distributed parameters and the line impedance, the specific phase-to-ground voltage variation rules corresponding to SLG fault on each phase are then discussed. Based on the voltage variation rules, a robust and practical method for faulty phase identification is proposed, which does not need the distributed parameters. Finally, the correctness of the variation rules and the availability of the proposed method is verified by simulation. Both the local and concurrent commutation failures (LCF and CCF) are concerned threats to the secure operation of multi-infeed LCC-HVDC (MIDC) systems, which will be largely impacted by the voltage stability. However, this impact has not been clearly revealed yet by earlier works due to the lack of the related analytical evaluation method. Thus in this paper, the analytical evaluation method related to the LCF and CCF with the voltage stability in MIDC systems is firstly proposed considering the complicated inter-inverter interactions. This is realized by deriving the analytical expressions of the LCF and CCF immunity indices (LCFII and CCFII) as the functions of the voltage stability factor (VSF) based on the system quasi-steady-state model. Moreover, the proposed method is used to clearly evaluate the impact of the voltage stability on the LCF and CCF by comprehensively conducting the parametric dependence analysis of the LCFII, CCFII, and VSF versus various system parameters and operation variables. The analysis results indicate that in some certain situations, increasing the voltage stability of MIDC systems however imposes an unexpected negative impact on the LCF and CCF. The inevitable voltage sag events cause losses to distributed generation (DG) and sensitive users. Reasonable planning for both of them helps to mitigate the impact of voltage sag. In this paper, a joint optimal planning method is proposed for DG and large sensitive user (LSU) considering the influence of voltage sag. Firstly, the new models of accelerated trip and chain trip for DG under voltage sag are established, to characterize the influence of DG tripping on other DG and sag characteristics during the sag event accurately. Secondly, a new voltage sag frequency assessment method is proposed, which considers models of accelerated trip and chain trip for DG, the tripping characteristics of distance protection (DP), to quantify the voltage sag severity accurately of DGs and LSUs in the gird which is with DP. Lastly, a joint optimal planning model is established considering the losses of DG and LSU under voltage sag, to support the planning of DG and LSU in different scenarios. The method is applied to IEEE RTS-30 for verification, proving that the method can give a direction of the most beneficial solution for the planner, to reduce the losses of voltage sag to both the power system and users. This paper outlines a novel loss of excitation (LOE) protection scheme for synchronous generators (SGs) based on reactive power increment (RPI) strategy and tracking the variation of SG output voltage (VSG). When variation of the VSG exceeds lesser than a specified threshold value, the proposed RPI strategy is triggered and VSG deviation is analyzed. For RPI execution, generated reactive power by SG (QSG) is shifted in increment direction. Following the applying RPI strategy, the VSG does not have any increasing changes during LOE events due to lack of excitation system to provide the required field current; while for Non-LOE (NLOE) events, VSG will be increased. Therefore, this provided feature by RPI strategy can properly and immediately cluster all LOE/NLOE events even under worst-scenarios. Due to power quality issues, the value of the shifted reactive power (ΔQSG) is considered small as much as possible. Meanwhile, it does not require any extra devices for execution. The exhaustive simulation studies on the power system prove that, the proposed scheme is quite reliable for clustering all LOE/NLOE events, and is much faster than other available methods. One of the consequences of voltage sags is unexpected motor trips or stalls. This is caused by the simple voltage-magnitude-based tripping logic used in the motor contactors. Since a motor has momentum during a voltage sag, a deep voltage sag with a short duration does not necessarily lead to motor misoperation. Based on this reasoning, a novel motor contactor operation scheme is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme takes into account both the magnitude and duration of a voltage sag plus the momentum of the rotor, in real-time, to decide if a motor will be tripped. The core idea of the scheme is to utilize the critical clearance time (CCT) of motors as the tripping time of AC contactors. The proposed scheme combines an offline analysis and an online calculation to minimize the computation burden in real-time operation. An improved motor parameter estimation method is also proposed to ensure the accuracy of the calculated CCT. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated and demonstrated through comparative case studies. Moreover, some practical issues are discussed to facilitate the real implementation. So far, there is no literature to evaluate the fault level of sensitive equipment (FLSE) caused by voltage sag from the perspective of the power grid. In practice, although the FLSE are dominated by the voltage sag of node, the voltage sag of the node is associated with whole power grid, including the voltage grade and location of the node, the distance between the concerned node and location of fault, and the weather and date at the time of fault, which are all named as voltage sag properties (VSP). In view of this gap, this paper evaluates the FLSE using the long-time monitoring data of VSP of some regional power grid by data mining method based on multidimensional matrix simplification and the improved gray target theory. The data mining process can be divided into three steps: 1) construct a database consisted of VSP and FLSE using long-time monitoring data, 2) mine the association rules between VSP and FLSE by multidimensional matrix simplification, and 3) match some actual scenario with the mined association rules by the improved gray target theory. This paper deals with the protection against earth faults in medium voltage meshed networks with unearthed neutral. A communication-supported protection system is proposed and assessed through numerical simulations. The protection system is based on the use of directional relays installed at both ends of each line of the network. Each relay communicates by sending permissive signals following the so-called directional comparison overreaching transfer trip scheme. Each directional relay implements a new transient fault detection algorithm based on the angle between the zero-sequence voltage and current phasors. The phasors are estimated at the dominant frequency of the network transient-response within the first milliseconds after the fault, which range can be evaluated by means of a simplified circuit equivalent representation. The performances of the protection system and the detection algorithm are evaluated for different network configurations. By using a specifically developed co-simulation tool that interfaces EMTP-RV with Matlab, the influence of the communication latency is also analyzed. A Monte Carlo method is applied to analyze the effects of fault resistance, incidence angle and fault location variations. This paper presents a new multi-objective control strategy for inverter-interfaced distributed generation (IIDG) to ensure its safe and continuous operation under unbalanced voltage sags. The proposed control strategy can effectively improve the low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability, reduce active power oscillations, and limit overcurrent simultaneously, which are marked as the most important control objectives of IIDG during unbalanced voltage sags. The advanced voltage support scheme, which utilizes positive sequence component, is firstly proposed to maximize the LVRT capability of IIDG during unbalanced voltage sags. Then, to ensure the safety of IIDG, the active power oscillation suppression and current limitation algorithm are designed individually. Based on the control algorithms of such objectives, the multi-objective control method, including scenario classification and reference current determination, is then presented to achieve such three objectives under various system conditions simultaneously. The paper addresses an optimization-based reference calculation method for Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) operating in normal and constrained situations (when the converter needs to prioritize its quantities as it has reached voltage or current limitations, e.g. during system faults). The optimization problem prioritizes to satisfy the external AC active and reactive current set-points demanded by the grid operator through the corresponding grid code. If the operator demands are fulfilled, it uses the available MMC degrees of freedom to minimize the arm inductance losses. Otherwise, if the operator demanded AC set-points cannot be accomplished, the optimization attempts to minimize the error prioritizing between either AC active or reactive currents. The optimization problem constraints are imposed through a steady-state model considering simultaneously the external and internal AC and DC magnitudes of the converter. The steady-state model also includes the voltage variation in the equivalent arm capacitors (considering the ripple). Then, the imposed limitations are the maximum allowed grid and arm currents, the maximum allowed arm voltages and the sub-module capacitor maximum voltages. The paper presents a detailed formulation of the optimization problem and applies it to several case studies where it is shown that the presented approach can be potentially used to obtain the MMC references both in normal and fault conditions. Impulse corona characteristics are very important for the analysis of overvoltage along overhead transmission lines. For DC line, the space charge due to normal corona may affect the impulse corona characteristics. The paper develops a circuit for combined application of DC and impulse voltage to measure the effect of space charges on impulse corona characteristics along DC conductor. Based on the circuit, a test platform with a corona cage was established. By measuring the q-u curve, the impulse corona onset voltages under different DC pre-voltages were obtained. It was proposed that the space charges would affect the corona onset voltage. The space charges of the opposite polarity would weaken the corona and reduce the impulse corona loss, which is beneficial to the overvoltage wave propagation. While the space charges of the same polarity would enhance the corona and increase the impulse corona loss, which is not conducive to the overvoltage wave propagation. In addition, the influence of wave front time and conductor radius on the impulse corona characteristics was measured. With the advancements of the battery energy storage systems (BESSs), reduction of their manufacturing costs and government subsidies, the BESS uptake is likely to increase rapidly in power distribution networks. This paper investigates the effects of residential BESSs on low-voltage (LV) networks using the actual household load profiles equipped with BESS and solar-photovoltaic (PV) systems. The electricity consumption data collected via smart meters (2200 households with PV/BESS, 1950 households with PV only and 1000 households without a PV or a BESS) at different solar-PV penetration levels and network types are used to simulate real network operating scenarios. A real LV distribution network in Australia is analysed in DIgSILENT PowerFactory under different scenarios, such as, customers with and without a solar-PV/BESS, with a solar-PV but without a BESS, and without a solar-PV, by using both the power flow and quasi-dynamic simulation studies under balanced and the unbalanced network loading conditions. According to the study, customers experience large voltage excursions from solar-PV power exports, which could be resolved by the household BESS, provided that the BESS charging is coordinated with the solar-PV production. Moreover, quasi-dynamic simulation shows that the BESS could reduce the violation of the over-voltage limit during the solar peak hours (midday) by lowering the worst-case feeder voltage by 3%. Finally, extreme-event (high solar PV generation scenario) simulation shows that the implementation of the BESS controller to facilitate charging BESS during afternoon solar-PV export may reduce the negative grid impact and will assist to avoid network upgrades. Ground faults are the main cause of electrical failure in transmission and distribution systems. In ungrounded distribution networks, it is difficult to detect where a first ground fault has happened as only capacitive currents are available. Also, it is important to trip only the faulty line in order to ensure the system's reliability. Directional residual overcurrent relays are the standard solution for these systems, but their difficult commissioning and high costs make it not trivial. This paper introduces a new selective and directional protection method to determine the faulty line in ungrounded medium voltage networks with three or more feeders. The method evaluates the residual currents in the feeders coupled to the same busbars in combination with a reference current created by the sum of a combination of residual currents of all feeders. Both simulation and laboratory results validate this new method, which is easy to start up, as it does not need previous configurations for its implementation, and it presents an economical solution to this problem.
