This paper proposes a novel discontinuous pulse-width modulation (DPWM) method to reduce the current harmonics and improve the system efficiency for a single-phase three-level neutral-point clamped inverter. In single-phase inverters, the unipolar pulse-width modulation (UP-PWM) method is commonly used. However, this method has the disadvantage of power losses due to numerous switching operations. Conventional DPWM methods reduce the power losses and improve efficiency but increase the current total harmonic distortion (THD). To overcome these weaknesses, this paper proposes a hybrid DPWM switching method combining two PWM methods: the UP-PWM method and the conventional DPWM method called one-pole clamped PWM method. Since the proposed DPWM method offers all the advantages of both PWM methods, the optimal performance—with regard to the power losses and current THD—is obtained. The combination of two PWM methods is investigated by analyzing the power losses and current THD. Based on the analysis, the process determining the optimal operating condition is introduced. This paper proposes a new single-phase single-stage switched-boost inverter with four switches. Like the quasi-Z-source inverter and quasi-switched boost inverter (qSBI), the proposed inverter has the main features as continuous input current, buck/boost voltage with single-stage conversion, and shoot-through immunity. Compared to the qSBI, the proposed inverter uses one more capacitor and one less switch. This paper presents the operating principles, pulse-width modulation control strategy, parameter design guidelines, and simulation results for the proposed inverter. To verify the performance of the proposed inverter, an 800-W prototype was built with an 110 V/50 Hz output voltage in stand-alone and grid-connected modes. In the traditional three-resistor-based current sampling scheme, the sampled currents will become inaccurate when the duration of zero-voltage vectors of an inverter is too short, which leads to a limited modulation index (MI). To overcome this problem, an improved three-resistor sampling method is proposed by establishing a predictive current model of an inverter load, which is that of an induction motor on the synchronous rotating frame for the demonstration purpose in this paper. The principle of this method is detailed in the paper. Then a simulation model of a vector-controlled induction motor drive that utilizes the proposed current sampling scheme is built in the Simulink environment. Finally, the experiment on the new sampling scheme is performed in both steady-state and dynamic conditions. The results verify that the existing current sampling problems can be solved effectively and the motor can perform well with higher MI under the new scheme. This paper presents a novel six-pulse low-frequency (LF) fluctuating high-voltage dc-bus-based power system architecture for fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) application. A novel hybrid modulation scheme consisting of six-pulse modulation at LF scale and modified secondary modulation and 33% pulse width modulation at high-frequency (HF) scale is proposed. Three-phase ac waveforms for the propulsion system of FCVs are generated from LF fluctuating high-voltage dc bus. The proposed modulation technique significantly reduces the switching losses of the bidirectional dual-stage inverter: 1) soft-switching of both sides of the front-end current-fed full-bridge converter is realized; and 2) at any moment, only one leg of back-end three-phase inverter is switched at HF, while the other two legs are kept in on or off states. This tremendously reduces the bidirectional inverter's switching losses and improves the system efficiency. The LF fluctuating high-voltage dc bus allows the elimination of large electrolytic dc-link capacitor, which contributes to a more reliable and compact design. This paper proposes an active switching harmonic current reduction method within the dc-link capacitor of two-level, three-phase, back-to-back converters. This method is based on the derived analytical solution for switching harmonic currents in the dc-link. It is shown that by controlling the pulse width modulation carrier waveform's phase angles, the harmonics in the second carrier band of the rectifier and the inverter can be synchronized such that cancellation occurs in the dc-link capacitor. This synchronization is provided by harmonic phase feedback control. The feasibility of the proposed approach has been verified experimentally and results are presented in this paper. This paper analyzes synchronization strategy for cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHBMLI) topologies with a carrier-based sinusoidal phase-shifted pulse width modulation (PSPWM) technique. In the PSPWM technique, a separate carrier is used for each H-bridge (HB). The carriers are generally phase shifted from each other by π /x rad (x = No. of HBs) for unipolar PWM. With the carrier frequency being an integer (odd/even) multiple of the fundamental frequency, it is observed that the positions of zero crossings of the carriers with respect to the zero crossings of voltage references play an important role for maintaining quarter-wave symmetry among multilevel inverter pole voltage waveforms. This paper analytically shows the conditions for half-wave symmetry and quarter-wave symmetry and experimentally verifies those conditions for the PSPWM technique with a five-level CHBMLI laboratory prototype. The performance of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) in medium-voltage applications, where the number of required submodules is not high, can be improved utilizing low switching frequency modulations such as (2N+1) selective harmonic elimination-pulse width modulation (SHE-PWM), which provides tight control of lower order harmonics and low switching losses. This paper proposes a calculation method, which is based on a novel formulation, to solve the SHE-PWM problem. In particular, MMCs with (2N+1) phase output voltage levels are considered, obtaining a (2N+1) SHE-PWM waveform. This method utilizes a unique system of equations that is valid for any possible waveform. Therefore, it is able to calculate simultaneously, without predefined waveforms, both the switching patterns and the associated firing angles that solve the (2N+1) SHE-PWM problem. Consequently, the search process is simplified and optimized. Furthermore, this paper also proposes a circulating current control technique, which can be applied along with (2N+1) SHE-PWM without disturbing the phase output voltage. There have been several advanced topologies proposed by the community for micro-inverter applications. However, many such applications suffer from unwanted second-order harmonic current ripple at dc input. Moreover, in the absence of suitable passive filter or ripple compensator, the second-order harmonics ripple may propagate into the dc source. This results in several problems to the system, related to system efficiency, life, cost, size, reliability, and stability. This paper proposes an adaptive sliding-mode controller to shape the output impedance of the boost-circuit of quasi-switched boost inverter such that the propagation of the ripple from dc link to the dc-input source is resisted. The quasi-switched boost inverter is one of the advanced and suitable topologies for the micro-inverter applications. The adaptive nature of the proposed controller improves the transient performance of the system at the line–load transients unlike some existing solutions, which affects dynamics adversely to achieve ripple mitigation objective. In this paper, a global study in terms of control architecture is applied to parallel voltage-source inverters. Parallelism of inverters represents very interesting advantages for the industrial applications to meet the high-power requirements, and it is possible to apply maintenance during the operation without interruptible operation. The main objective of this paper is to guarantee a reliable operation of the parallel inverters system during healthy and faulty conditions due to full disconnection of any inverter. Special precautions are recommended to avoid the negative effects of the circulating currents, which are caused essentially by the asynchronous pulse width modulation or existence of dispersion of the system component characteristics. To deal with this crucial problem, one-loop flatness-based control is proposed to the control of N parallel inverters and allows obtaining low total harmonic distortion. The proposed control uses the advantages of the flatness to ensure high power quality at the point of common coupling and equal currents distribution between the parallel inverters and minimize the impact of a full disconnection of any inverter on the performance. This paper proposes a dual-space vector control scheme for the open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM) drive fed by the dual inverter with a single dc supply. Potential zero-sequence current in the open-end winding drive system has to be considered since it causes circulating current in the winding and leads to high current stress of power semiconductor devices and high losses. Zero-sequence current in open-end winding ac motor drives is usually caused by the zero-sequence voltage, and therefore switching combinations which do not produce zero-sequence voltage are used to synthesize the reference voltage in existing methods. But even so, the zero-sequence voltage can also be produced by the dead time of the inverter. In order to suppress zero-sequence current in the OEW-PMSM drive, a dual-space vector control scheme is proposed and a novel dual-inverter space vector pulse width modulation (PWM) with the zero-sequence voltage reference is employed to regulate system zero-sequence voltage in this paper. Compared with existing dual inverter PWM strategies, the novel algorithm build a regulation mechanism for the zero-sequence voltage. In this paper, the near-state pulsewidth modulation (NSPWM), adapted to be implemented in dual-voltage-source inverter (VSI) fed open-end motor, is proposed with the aim of mitigating low-order harmonics (which lead to current total harmonic distortion (THD) minimization). The following two proposed methods are studied in detail: 1) fixing phase angle displacement (PAD) between two VSIs to 120° while adjusting the modulation index (MI); and 2) fixing MI to the predetermined value (wherein low-order harmonics are highly mitigated) while adjusting PAD. Furthermore, the proposed approaches enhance efficiency by limiting the number of commutations within the switching interval. The paper also presents the mathematical approaches to accurately determine low-order harmonic components and switching losses for dual-VSI structure. The experimental setup, including dual-VSI and open-end induction motor, is assembled in the laboratory to evaluate performance of the proposed method. Based on the Z-source inverter, this paper proposes a novel commutation torque ripple reduction strategy for brushless DC motor (BLDCM). The proposed strategy employs the same modulation mode in both the normal conduction period and the commutation period, and the commutation torque ripple is reduced by regulating the shoot-through vector and active vector duty cycles. The proposed detection method acquires the end point of commutation by comparing the clamped terminal voltages with reference zero level, and the signal-noise-ratio of the detection is improved by avoiding the attenuation of the terminal voltages. Furthermore, a certain pulse width of the shoot-through vector can not only reduce the commutation torque ripple but also provide a new opportunity to detect the end point of commutation. Moreover, Z-source inverter provides the buck–boost ability for BLDCM drive system, then the dc voltage utilization can be improved, and the safety of the drive system can also be improved. In several electrical dc–ac power conversions, the ac output voltage is higher than the input voltage. If a voltage-source inverter (VSI) is used, then an additional dc–dc boosting stage is required to overcome the step-down VSI limitations. Recently, several impedance source converters are gaining higher attentions [1], [2], as they are able to provide buck-boost capability in a single conversion stage. This paper proposes the merging of the boost stage and the VSI stage in a single stage dc–ac power conversion, denoted as split-source inverter (SSI). The proposed topology requires the same number of active switches of the VSI, three additional diodes, and the same eight states of a conventional space-vector modulation. It also shows some merits compared to Z-source inverters, especially in terms of reduced switch voltage stress for voltage gains higher than 1.15. This paper presents the analysis of the SSI and compares different modulation schemes. Moreover, it presents a modified modulation scheme to eliminate the low frequency ripple in the input current and the voltage across the inverter bridge. Pulse-width-modulated (PWM) converters have been widely applied for power processing, and they are typically the stems of other types of converters, such as quasi-resonant, Z-source, and switched-inductor hybrid converters. Development of PWM converters has been spanning over a century, starting from the buck converter. The well-known PWM converters include buck, boost, buck–boost, Ćuk, single ended primary inductive converter (SEPIC), zeta, Z-source, quasi-Z source, etc. Many attempts have been proposed to develop these converters based mostly on canonical cell concepts and by introducing extra LC filters to the cells. This paper presents an enhancement to the layer and graft schemes by introducing the ideas of dc voltage/current offsetting, capacitor/inductor component splitting, diode grafting, and inverse operation of PWM converters. The PWM converters, which can be operated in continuous conduction mode (CCM) or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), therefore can be synthesized systematically according to decoded transfer gains. Decoding and synthesizing PWM converters uniquely bridge transfer gains to converter topologies and provide readers a comprehensive understanding of PWM-converter evolution from the original converter, the buck converter. Additionally, in this paper, the Ćuk, SEPIC, and zeta converters all with the same transfer gain of $D/(1 - D)$ are proved to be equivalent to the buck–boost converter with an extra LC filter. For further illustrating the proposed approaches, various types of Z-source converters, switched-capacitor/switched-inductor hybrid converters, and a single-stage interleaved converter are reviewed, and new PWM converters are developed. The increasing interest in multiphase drive systems has led to the extension of inverter topologies and pulse width modulation (PWM) methods from three-phase to multiphase occasions. Carrier-based PWM (CPWM) dominates space vector PWM when the phase number increases, because of its simple computation and modular implementation. Although intensive work has been done on modifying PWM methods to reduce the common-mode voltage (CMV), not enough work has been done on CPWM methods with CMV reduction for multiphase drives. This paper extends the phase-shifted sinusoidal PWM (PS-SPWM) method for five-phase and six-phase two-level voltage-source inverters (VSI) and employs the intersection-plotting method and Fourier analysis to reveal the nature of the CMV. Both experiment and simulation results comply with theoretical analysis that compared with the conventional SPWM, the PS-SPWM can effectively reduce the CMV in peak-to-peak value and RMS value, though it leads to a higher phase current distortion. In the renewable energy generation systems, the grid-connected inverter with LCL filter (GCI-LCL) is an important device to realize dc–ac power conversion and connect the distributed power generation system and power grid. However, the resonance problems of the LCL filter may bring instability to GCI-LCL. Besides, the grid impedance and the time delay in digital controllers also have a harmful influence on the stability of GCI-LCL. To solve these problems, a dual-current active damping control strategy based on the inverter-side current and grid-connected current feedback for GCI-LCL is proposed in this paper, and the systematic parameters design process is investigated. Compared with the conventional damping strategies, a resonance suppression for the LCL filter, a larger stability margin, and a better anti-interference capability in a weak grid can be achieved under the proposed strategy. In addition, by analyzing the active damping effect of the proposed strategy, a simplified model in a low-frequency band for GCI-LCL is proposed to enhance the anti-interference capability in the weak grid and simplify the parameters design process. This paper proposed a novel method for two-segment three-phase motor to eliminate the harmonics nearby pulsewidth modulation (PWM) frequency. Due to PWM technique and switching losses considerations, ear-piercing high-frequency electromagnetic noise in drive system is common. By using magnetically coupled inductors (MCIs) and interleaved technique, the proposed novel method is able to remove the high-frequency harmonics located nearby the PWM frequency and other odd multiples in two-segment three-phase motor. With this method, the unpleasant acoustic noise could be removed when the PWM frequency is selected near 10 kHz. The size of MCIs mainly depends on the PWM frequency harmonic currents rather than the fundamental frequency currents. Thus, its size is very small compared with LC filter. Moreover, this method remains the control dynamics of two-segment three-phase motor without additional inductance for fundamental-frequency currents. This paper proposes a general control scheme for the dual-input three-level inverter, which comes from a neutral point clamped three-level inverter. It can be used for photovoltaic (PV) systems or battery storage systems with two dc sources. The dual-input three-level inverter can be connected with two PV arrays, which are able to realize maximum power point tracking independently. First, the dynamic model of the dual-input three-level inverter is established, which describes the relationship between the dual-input voltages and the duty cycle. After discussing the control theory of the dual-input voltages, a typical control scheme is proposed. The design of a control loop is introduced in details. Afterward, modulation and restriction of the proposed method are discussed. This paper proposed a novel family of pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategies for single-phase quasi-switched boost inverter (qSBI). By combining shoot-through (ST) mode in the inverter's switches and the turning-on state of an additional switch, the qSBI produced a high voltage gain without adding any passive components. Compared to the conventional PWM strategy for the same input and output voltage gain, the introduced PWM strategies for qSBI could reduce voltage stress across semiconductors and capacitor with the following additional merits: having smaller high-frequency inductor current and capacitor voltage ripples, using high modulation index with low ST duty cycle, and having higher efficiency. Circuit analysis, operating theories, and simulation results of the single-phase qSBI with the introduced PWM5 strategy are shown. A 500-W laboratory prototype was constructed and the effectiveness of the introduced PWM strategy was validated. In this paper, a novel space-vector pulsewidth modulation technique for a five-level active neutral-point clamped (5L-ANPC) inverter is proposed to eliminate the common-mode voltage (CMV). For the 5L-ANPC inverter, which produces a good output voltage performance and lowdv/dt, the total 125 voltage vectors can be generated, among which the proposed scheme employs only 19 voltage vectors producing a zero CMV. Due to the limitation of voltage vectors selected, the dc-link capacitor voltages of the 5L-ANPC inverter cannot be balanced by themselves. Therefore, the capacitor voltages of the inverter should be controlled by choosing the redundant switching states appropriately. This paper presents a two-segment motor system powered by two inverters with phase-shift pulsewidth modulation (PWM) to fulfill the purpose of low-torque ripple and vibration noise. Different from conventional multi-inverter structure, the inverters for this type of machine are electrically isolated between each other. First, the concept of multisegment machine is presented and the basic operation principle is analyzed with finite-element analysis (FEA) method. Then vibration caused by the switching device in machine is investigated and the control model of a two-segment motor is developed. Further, the principle of carrier phase-shift PWM is illustrated with the vibration analysis. Carrier phase shift can generate interleaved torque and force on the rotor for the two groups of windings in the machine and cancel each other for certain harmonics. Then simulation of control strategy for this type of machine has been done in MATLAB. Finally, based on the concept and principles mentioned before, a two-segment motor with its drive system is fabricated. Both the test of torque ripple and the vibration of the motor have been significantly improved. Compared with a normal three-phase motor driven by a paralleled inverter with interleaving, the proposed approach is with comparable vibration reduction but without using extra coupled inductors. In voltage-source inverters (VSIs), dead time is used to prevent shoot-through over switching devices. However, the existence of the dead time will distort the output phase current, which degrades the performance of the inverter as well as influences the common-mode voltage (CMV), particularly in CMV elimination relevant modulation schemes, such as zero-common-mode (CM) pulsewidth modulation (PWM)-based paralleled inverters. In the light of the situation that the normal sampling-based dead-time compensation (DTC) methods are often disturbed by the current ripple, this paper introduces a novel DTC method for the VSI, which can mitigate the impact of the current ripple and improve the accuracy of DTC. The proposed method deduces the real-time current ripple, which can reconstruct the actual trajectory of phase-leg currents, and the peak values corresponding to rising and falling edges for PWM signals can be predicted. In this way, DTC can be implemented based on the direction of relevant instantaneous switching currents and finally improves the accuracy. Especially, the current-ripple-prediction-based DTC can help to improve the CMV distortion caused by the dead time for paralleled inverters with zero-CM PWM. This paper proposes the new clamping angle control (CAC) pulse width modulation (PWM) method to restore its maximum linear modulation range of voltage source inverters (VSIs) reduced by the duty ratio limitation in hardware implementation, which makes the VSIs to operate nonlinearly in the high modulation range. The deadtime and the bootstrap gate driver circuit mainly cause this duty ratio limitation in practice. In particular, the bootstrap gate driver circuit is used in many industrial applications by avoiding the additional power supply to apply the gate-source voltage of power switches, and therefore making the VSIs to be small size with the low cost. First, the proposed CACPWM method is theoretically analyzed. Then, it is applied in the high modulation range to overcome the limitation of the duty ratio due to the use of the bootstrap gate driver circuit. This paper analyzes the accuracy of the zero-order hold (ZOH) model for the digital pulse width modulator (DPWM) in the s-domain. The s-domain model and the exact z-domain model for the current control of a single-phase inverter with an L-type filter are elaborated for quantifying the deviation of the ZOH model for the DPWM. The influences of the different computational delay and duty-cycle update modes on this deviation is analyzed in detail. The compensation method for this deviation of the ZOH model is proposed for accurately predicting the stability region of the control system in the s-domain. For modular multilevel converters (MMCs) applied to medium-voltage dc distribution grids, using the traditional nearest level modulation (NLM) as in HVdc systems can lead to severe current distortion due to significantly reduced module numbers. This paper proposes a hybrid modulation method combining NLM and pulse width modulation (PWM) where only one module per arm operates under PWM mode. The proposed nearest level PWM (NL-PWM) method not only significantly reduces the current distortion, but also avoids the complicated voltage balancing control in each module. The harmonic characteristics of NL-PWM are derived using double Fourier transform, which provides a theoretical basis for selecting the module number and switching frequency for medium-voltage applications in accordance with grid harmonic requirements. Finally, the harmonic characteristics and feasibility of the proposed modulation method are validated by simulation and experimental studies on an MMC with six modules per arm. The simulated and experimental results reveal that NL-PWM has better voltage and current harmonic characteristics over NLM and CPS-PWM, thereby suiting the application of MMC with few models. In this paper, a novel buck–boost ac–ac converter is proposed. The basic switching unit of the proposed converter is a unidirectional buck circuit; therefore, it has no shoot-through worries. It can achieve safe commutation without using RC snubbers or soft commutation strategies. It can be implemented with power MOSFETs without their body diodes conducting and, for current freewheeling external diodes, can be used to minimize the reverse recovery issues and related loss. It has a bipolar voltage gain with both inverting and non-inverting operations. The non-inverting operation can be used to compensate voltage sag, and inverting operation can be used to compensate voltage swell. Therefore, the proposed converter as a dynamic voltage restorer is capable of compensating for both voltage sag and swell in a wide range. In this paper, a new pulse width modulation (PWM) scheme and commutation method is presented for one phase loss operation of three-phase isolated buck matrix-type rectifier. With the proposed PWM scheme, the maximum allowable voltage gain for one phase loss operation can be achieved, which permits the continuous operation of the converter to deliver two-third of the rated power and regulate the output voltage with maximum output voltage drop less than 5% of nominal output voltage. In addition, with the proposed commutation method, a safe transition from one phase loss operation to normal operation and vice versa can occur with minimum commutation steps (two-step) under zero-voltage switching condition. A sawtooth carrier-based sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SC-SPWM) technique for asymmetrical six-phase two-level inverters is proposed in this paper, which could reduce both the peak-to-peak amplitude and the changing frequency of the common-mode voltage (CMV). The intersection-plotting method reveals that the mirror symmetrical sawtooth carriers for two three-phase groups can help optimize the distribution of overlapping areas, which is the CMV reduction mechanism of SC-SPWM. Additionally, the Fourier analysis is employed to quantitatively evaluate the modulation index and harmonic performance of SC-SPWM compared with the conventional SPWM and two phase-shifted SPWM methods. Also, further analysis demonstrates that dead time does not affect the reduction of CMV in a noticeable way. Single-loop current control is an attractive scheme for the LCL-type grid-connected inverter due to its simplicity and low cost. However, conventional single-loop control schemes, which command either the inverter current or the grid current, are subject to the specific resonance frequency regions. The weighted average current control, which splits the filter capacitor into two parts (in form of an LCCL filter) and commands the current flowing between these two parts, is independent of the resonance frequency, but on the other hand, it is limited by the poor sensitivity to the grid impedance variation and weak stability in the grid current. These limitations are comprehensively explained in this paper and then addressed by identifying that the single-loop weighted average current control is equivalent to the dual-loop grid current control with an inherent capacitor current active damping. By tuning the capacitor split proportion as a second degree of freedom, an optimal damping performance that is robust to the grid impedance variation can be naturally achieved using only the inherent damping. Thus, no extra damping is required, and the single-loop structure with only one current sensing turns to be adequate. Moreover, for convenience of practical implementation, an improved LCCL filter configuration is proposed to allow the use of two equal nominal capacitances for the split capacitors. To damp the LCL-filter resonance in a grid-connected inverter, the feedback of capacitor current is usually adopted, and it can be replaced by the feedback of capacitor voltage as a low-cost solution, if an accurate digital differentiator can be made. The best way for realizing such a differentiator has so far proved to be an indirect nonideal generalized integrator (GI). As a simple alternative, this paper proposes two digital differentiators, which are directly developed in the discrete domain. They are a first-order differentiator based on backward Euler plus digital lead compensator and a second-order differentiator based on Tustin plus digital notch filter. The basic idea of the proposed methods is to correct their frequency responses to match the ideal differentiator with embedded digital filters. It is shown that the proposed differentiators exhibit the same derivative performance as the nonideal-GI differentiator, and they are more attractive for digital implementations due to their direct discrete natures, compact expressions, and easy algebraic manipulations. In particular, the proposed first-order differentiator is most competitive for its general representation and simplest implementation. For the purpose of reducing cost and volume, as well as to increase reliability in hostile environments, techniques of reconstructing three-phase current through a single current sensor have been reported for a three-phase alternating current motor vector control system. Based on the phase current reconstruction method, this paper proposes a novel open-circuit fault diagnosis method for the low-power voltage source inverter in the three-phase permanent-magnet synchronous motor drive. Other than sampling the single dc-link current sensor, the zero voltage vector sampling method (ZVVSM) is adopted to implement the fault diagnosis. By placing the single current sensor at a special position, ZVVSM is able to sample current during the two zero voltage vectors and reconstruct the three-phase currents. The reconstructed three-phase currents are used to generate the diagnostic variables that can detect and locate the faulty power switches. The PWM modulation strategy remains unchanged in this method and the reconstructed phase currents are with less waveform distortion and less harmonic contents, which are suitable for the fault diagnosis. Multilevel inverters have created a new wave of interest in industry and research. While the classical topologies have proved to be a viable alternative in a wide range of high-power medium-voltage applications, there has been an active interest in the evolution of newer topologies. Reduction in overall part count as compared to the classical topologies has been an important objective in the recently introduced topologies. In this paper, some of the recently proposed multilevel inverter topologies with reduced power switch count are reviewed and analyzed. The paper will serve as an introduction and an update to these topologies, both in terms of the qualitative and quantitative parameters. Also, it takes into account the challenges which arise when an attempt is made to reduce the device count. In order to solve the neutral-point voltage unbalancing problem for three-level inverters, this paper proposes a method to balance the neutral-point voltage for three-level inverters with variable modulation wave offset sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) control. Based on the mathematical expressions of neutral-point voltage unbalancing, the factors are studied, which affect the fluctuation of neutral-point voltage. Theoretically the mathematical expressions of the neutral-point voltage with the proposed method are derived, and the mathematical relationship between the fluctuation of neutral-point voltage and the adjusting offset of modulation wave is studied. This proposed method realizes controlling the neutral-point voltage balance by dynamically calculating the offset superimposed to the modulation wave based on SPWM (DCOSPWM). This DCOSPWM method is very simple, which has good steady-state performance and is easy for digital implementation. The simulation results verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis in this paper, and the feasibility and effectiveness of this method is verified by the experiments in the experimental platform of neutral point clamped three-level inverters based on digital signal processor (DSP)-complex programmable logic device (CPLD). According to the number of segments, the space vector modulation (SVM) can divide into conventional SVM sequence (CSVMS) and special SVM sequence (SSVMS). It is well known that SVM can be equivalently realized by carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM) with a zero component injection in both two-level and three-level inverters. For eight segment CSVMS in three-level inverters, many papers have ever got the injected zero component equation. But similar approach does not work for SSVMS, which has more than eight segments, e.g., 10, 12, or 14. What more, the accurate injected zero component has never been achieved so far. To solve above problems, therefore, a generated decomposition method of modulation wave has been proposed in this paper. By strict theoretical derivation, the same correlation can be extended to SSVMS and the corresponding zero component expression can be acquired. Based on this method, this paper puts a lot attention on the essential feature explanation, mathematical proof, and gives a detailed process to get the zero component equation, using it can realize SSVMS by CBPWM. This paper presents an integrated solution for a photovoltaic (PV)-fed water-pump drive system, which uses an open-end winding induction motor (OEWIM). The dual-inverter-fed OEWIM drive achieves the functionality of a three-level inverter and requires low value dc-bus voltage. This helps in an optimal arrangement of PV modules, which could avoid large strings and helps in improving the PV performance with wide bandwidth of operating voltage. It also reduces the voltage rating of the dc-link capacitors and switching devices used in the system. The proposed control strategy achieves an integration of both maximum power point tracking and V/f control for the efficient utilization of the PV panels and the motor. In this paper, we propose model predictive control methods to reduce the common-mode voltage of three-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs). In the reduced common-mode voltage-model predictive control (RCMV-MPC) methods proposed in this paper, only nonzero voltage vectors are utilized to reduce the common-mode voltage as well as to control the load currents. In addition, two nonzero voltage vectors are selected from the cost function at every sampling period, instead of using only one optimal vector during one sampling period. The two selected nonzero vectors are distributed in one sampling period in such a way as to minimize the error between the measured load current and the reference. Without utilizing the zero vectors, the common-mode voltage controlled by the proposed RCMV-MPC algorithms can be restricted within ±Vdc/6. Furthermore, application of the two nonzero vectors with optimal time sharing between them can yield satisfactory load current ripple performance without using the zero vectors. Thus, the proposed RCMV-MPC methods can reduce the common-mode voltage as well as control the load currents with fast transient response and satisfactory load current ripple performance compared with the conventional model predictive control method. In this paper, an immune algorithm (IA)-based dead-time elimination PWM control strategy is proposed. For existing dead-time elimination applications, one of the major problems is the dead-time control around the zero-current-crossing points. To deal with this problem, this paper proposes a different PWM control method which first restricts the control sequence to a specified level around the zero-crossing zone. Also, the proposed method can improve the current waveform quality by using the IA approach and three-level control strategy. Compared with conventional dead-time elimination methods, this technique has the features of simple hardware requirement and adaptive control. Moreover, this control strategy effectively eliminates the effect of dead-time, while at the same time significantly reducing the total harmonic distortion of output current and improving the amplitude of output RMS value in different modulation indexes and loads conditions. To verify the analysis, an experimental platform based on DSP and field-programmable gate array is built. Based on the Z-source inverter, this paper proposed a novel approach to zero-crossing point (ZCP) detections during the shoot-through vectors for sensorless brushless dc motor (BLDCM). The proposed approach separates the ZCP detections from speed adjustment, and makes the shoot-through vector not influence the motor speed-adjustment directly, while the zero-vectors and active-vectors are used exclusively to adjust the speed of BLDCM. With the proposed approach, the sensorless BLDCM can operate in a wide speed range without switching the detection points and the reference levels, and it is unnecessary to change the reference levels according to the PWM technique. The terminal voltages limited by diode can be directly compared with the reference zero level during the shoot-through vectors, so as to reduce the detection error caused by attenuation. Moreover, Z-source inverter not only provides boost voltage for sensorless BLDCM drive system, but also improves the utilization rate of dc source voltage and the safety of the drive system. This paper presents a new multilevel selective harmonic elimination pulse-width modulation (MSHE-PWM) technique for transformerless static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) system employing cascaded H-bridge inverter (CHI) configuration. The proposed MSHE-PWM method optimizes both the dc-voltage levels and the switching angles, enabling more harmonics to be eliminated without affecting the structure of the inverter circuit. The method provides constant switching angles and linear pattern of dc-voltage levels over the modulation index range. This in turns eliminates the tedious steps required for manipulating the offline calculated switching angles and therefore, easing the implementation of the MSHE-PWM for dynamic systems. Although the method relies on the availability of the variable dc-voltage levels which can be obtained by various topologies, however, the rapid growth and development in the field of power semiconductor devices led to produce high-efficiency dc-dc converters with a relatively high-voltage capacity and for simplicity, a buck dc-dc converter is considered in this paper. This paper presents a fast and generalized space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) scheme for any multilevel inverter. The SVPWM scheme generates all the available switching states and switching sequences based on two simple and general mappings, and calculates the duty cycles simply as if for a two-level SVPWM, thus independent of the level number of the inverter. Because the switching states, duty cycles, and switching sequences are all obtained by simple calculation in the proposed SVPWM scheme, no lookup table is needed and the scheme is computationally fast. The generalized method of generating the switching states (first mapping), calculating the duty cycles, and determining the switching sequence (second mapping) is described in this paper. The scheme is suitable for any reference vector with any modulation index, and can be conveniently extended to meet specific requirements, such as symmetric switching sequences. Compared with prior methods, the SVPWM scheme proposed in this paper provides two more degrees of freedom, i.e., the adjustable switching sequences and duty cycles, thus offering significant flexibility for optimizing the performance of multilevel inverters. This paper proposes a switched-capacitor multilevel inverter for high-frequency ac power distribution systems. The proposed topology produces a staircase waveform with higher number of output levels employing fewer components compared to several existing switched-capacitor multilevel inverters in the literature. This topology is beneficial where asymmetric dc voltage sources are available, e.g., in case of renewable energy farms based ac microgrids and modern electric vehicles. Utilizing the available dc sources as inputs for a single inverter solves the major problem of connecting several inverters in parallel. Additionally, the need to stack voltage sources, like batteries or supercapacitors, in series which demand charge equalization algorithms, are eliminated as the voltage sources employed share a common ground. In this paper, a novel optimized switching repetitive control (OSRC) scheme is developed and applied to a constant-voltage constant-frequency pulse width modulation inverter to enhance the stability and tracking performance with low sampling frequency. In OSRC, a switching integral phase lead compensator is applied to enlarge the stability margin, which is impaired by the phase lag of the inverter system. Paralleled inverters with asynchronous carriers are increasingly emerging into renewable power plants and other power-electronic-based power systems. The sideband harmonics resulting from the pulse width modulation tend to be different from one inverter to another, which may trigger sideband harmonic resonances among the paralleled inverters. To address the sideband harmonic instability, the nonlinearity of the digital pulse width modulator is analyzed first in this paper based on the harmonic balance principle. It is revealed that the dynamic sideband components corresponding to a given small-signal perturbation can be far below the Nyquist frequency, and they may not be effectively attenuated by antialiasing filters. A multifrequency impedance model is then developed for the inverter, which characterizes the dynamic coupling between the perturbed frequency component and the sideband frequency component. The impact of asynchronous carriers on the sideband harmonic instability of paralleled inverters can, thus, be analyzed, and the frequency and phase sequence of the resulting oscillation components are predicted. Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has the advantages of flexible structure, high power density, and low noise. It is promising to be developed into railway traction system. This application of the PMSM is limited by the low switching frequency of the high power traction inverter. Therefore, it is necessary to restrain the output current harmonics by using the optimized synchronous pulse width modulation (PWM) method. In this paper, the relationship between the load current of PMSM and the output voltage of the inverter using synchronous PWM is analyzed, and the expression of the current harmonics is deduced. Then, a new current harmonic evaluation index considering the saliency ratio and load angle constraints is proposed. Based on this, a novel current harmonic distortion minimization PWM (CHMPWM) algorithm for the PMSM is constructed. Compared with the two existing CHMPWM algorithms, the proposed optimized PWM has better harmonic performance at any modulation index and load angle. Furthermore, according to the results of the proposed CHMPWM, the influence of the load angle variation on optimal switching angle distribution is analyzed when pulse ratio is less than or equal to 11. The simple boost control (SBC) method is usually used to control the shoot-through state in a single-phase single-stage quasi-switched boost inverter (qSBI). This paper proposes a new pulse-width modulation (PWM) control scheme to improve the modulation index for the qSBI. The advantages of the proposed method for the qSBI over the conventional SBC method are as follows: 1) the modulation index is larger; 2) the voltage stress on the capacitor, diodes, and switches is reduced significantly; 3) the high-frequency peak-to-peak inductor current and capacitor voltage ripples are smaller; 4) the shoot-through current is lower; and 5) the efficiency is higher. The operating principles and circuit analysis for the proposed PWM control scheme are shown. This paper introduces series work of common-mode (CM) voltage reduction for the paralleled inverters. The paralleled inverters’ phase-legs are connected through coupling inductors and the combined three-phase currents are provided to the load. Interleaving is an approach to reduce the CM voltage for the paralleled inverters but it cannot eliminate CM voltage. A novel pulse-width-modulation (PWM) method for paralleled inverters which can theoretically achieve zero CM voltage is developed. Considering the basic voltage vectors in each inverter, novel paralleled voltage vectors which have zero CM voltage are proposed to combine the reference voltage vector. The action time's distribution and voltage vectors’ sending sequence for each inverter are also introduced. The proposed PWM method can make sure the voltage of the two inverters are balanced in each switching cycle and limits the circulating current through small coupling inductors. Similar to interleaving space vector PWM, the proposed zero CM PWM also has the ability to reduce the output current ripple and electromagnetic interference (EMI). A dual-buck inverter (DBI) possesses no shoot-through worries and can boost efficiency by using power mosfet s. The main drawback of a DBI is the use of more inductors than in a traditional full-bridge inverter. This greater number of inductors decreases the power density and increases system cost. In this paper, a modified cascaded full-bridge DBI is proposed. It retains all the advantages of the conventional cascaded full-bridge DBI, possesses no shoot-through issues, and can be operated with no pulse-width-modulation dead-times. This paper discusses the operation of a single-stage, isolated, high-frequency ac-link-based single-phase dc–ac converter, suitable for photovoltaic microinverter applications, controlled using phase modulation of the secondary-side cycloconverter devices. A detailed analysis is presented explaining the impact of prominent circuit nonidealities such as device capacitance and transformer leakage inductance on circuit behavior. The proposed extended-dead-time based modulation scheme helps in achieving zero-voltage-switching of the primary devices over the entire line cycle of the ac output and also offers the benefit of reduced transformer rms current due to absence of circulating current in the zero state. A flyback-based regenerative clamp circuit is used for mitigating voltage spikes on the secondary devices arising due to leakage inductance induced oscillations. A generic commutation strategy is also discussed, which makes operation with nonunity power factor loads also possible. Four-level nested neutral-point clamped (NNPC) inverters experience severe voltage balancing problems under low output-frequency conditions when the conventional four-level space vector modulation (4L-SVM) technique is applied, which limits their wider application. In order to get a complete control of the flying-capacitor voltages, and to alleviate the calculation burden of conventional 4L-SVM, a simplified but effective 4L-SVM technique along with the voltage balance control (VBC) function is proposed in this paper. For low modulation indexes, zero and small vectors are selectively utilized and distributed to force the average charging and discharging time of flying capacitors to be equal to each other during every switching period, so that voltage ripples are greatly reduced to be within an acceptable level under low output-frequency conditions. For high modulation indexes, the simplification of conventional 4L-SVM for NNPC inverters into two-level SVM is proposed to reduce the computation complexity. Principles of the proposed 4L-SVM and VBC are elaborated in detail. The steady-state, transient-state, and VBC performances are investigated and compared with the case where the conventional 4L-SVM is applied.
