In this paper, a new class of bidirectional partial-resonance power converters is presented. The proposed family can be configured to interface single- or multi-port dc, single- or multi-phase ac systems at input-side and/or output-side. The proposed family offers a very modular structure, which can lead to cost reduction from a common designed module. In this converter, which accomplishes power conversion in a single stage, a small inductor placed in series with the input and output switch-bridges forms the link. This small link inductor is responsible for transferring power between different ports of the system. The proposed topologies can operate in buck, boost, and buck–boost modes of operation to step up and/or step down the voltage. In buck–boost mode of operation, the converter is controlled such that the power is entirely transferred through the link inductor; whereas, in buck or boost modes of operation only a fraction of the power is transferred through the link inductor, and the remaining power is directly transferred from input phases to the output phases. Galvanic isolation, which is typically a prominent factor contributing to power density of a converter, can be provided by means of a compact and lightweight single-phase high-frequency transformer added to the link. In comparison with earlier generations of partial-resonance inductive-link power converters, in the proposed converter, the level of link peak current and consequently power-loss, as well as voltage and current stress of switches are dramatically decreased. A very small film capacitor can be placed in parallel with the link inductor to facilitate zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) operation for all the switches/diodes. Apart from increasing the overall efficiency, minimized dv/dt stress and improvement in power density are achieved by adding the link capacitor. The proposed converter employs four-quadrant switches, i.e., bidirectional-conducting bidirectional-blocking switches, and charges the link inductor in both positive and negative directions in each cycle. In view of this, better utilization of the link inductor and lower total harmonic distortion (THD) are offered. Furthermore, two distinct switching algorithms are developed for the proposed family of converters. In this paper, the detailed behavior of the proposed family is investigated analytically, and simulation and experimental results are presented to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed converter. A low-power proof-of-concept prototype with input voltage of 59 V/161 V, load voltage of 178 V/73.5 V, maximum switching frequency of 4.9 kHz/3.65 kHz at 215 W/450 W in a step-up/step-down operation is considered for the experimental verification. This paper describes a dc-link voltage control method of a single-phase back-to-back cascaded H-bridge inverter (SBCI) for a medium-voltage motor drive system. The main advantage of the SBCI topology over the conventional regenerative cascaded H-bridge topology with a three-phase active front-end (AFE) is a simple system structure, which is composed of an input transformer, a power cell, a current sensor, etc. However, the challenging points of the SBCI are larger voltage ripple in the dc-link capacitor and imbalance of dc-link voltages of each phase. The asymmetric dc-link voltage of each power cells could cause unstable operation such as over-modulation due to the lack of the dc-link voltage of a particular phase and result in over-voltage or under-voltage faults. In this paper, the control strategy of the dc-link voltage for the SBCI that uses the negative-sequence voltage of the converter is described. The proposed control method is verified with a computer simulation whose target is a 6.6-kV–1.25-MW medium-voltage drive system. Also, through the experimental setup with the prototype SBCI whose power rating is 16.2 kVA, the dc-link voltage of each AFE has been controlled within a 0.5% error of its reference value at the full load. The instantaneous output power of the two-stage single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverter pulsates at twice the line frequency ($2f_{{\text{o}}}$), generating second harmonic current (SHC) in the front-end dc–dc converter and PV panel, which will affect the maximum power point tracking operation and deteriorate the overall conversion efficiency. The generating mechanism of the SHC is analyzed in this paper and it is pointed that in order to eliminate the SHC in the front-end dc–dc converter and PV panel, the voltage loop gain of the front-end dc–dc converter should be high enough at $2f_{{\text{o}}}$. Since there is a −180° phase abrupt at the resonant frequency of the input side filter capacitor and the inductor, the system may be unstable. To cope with this problem, the inductor current feedback active-damping scheme (ADS) is adopted. For further improving the loop gain at $2f_{{\text{o}}}$ , proportional–integral–resonant regulator with ADS (PIR + ADS) is proposed in this paper. Besides, a step-by-step closed-loop parameters design method is presented. Finally, a 3-kW two-stage single-phase grid-connected PV inverter has been fabricated and tested, and the experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed control schemes. A modular multilevel converter (MMC) is regarded as a promising topology in high-voltage direct current systems. However, the MMC consists of numerous submodules (SMs) and switching devices, which lead to a considerable switching loss, and increased cost and size of the heat sink. To mitigate these issues, this paper presents a novel modulation method composed of fundamental frequency modulation (FFM) and multicarrier-based sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation schemes. The main purpose of this modulation method is the reduction of switching loss while maintaining good harmonic performance. However, the FFM scheme leads to the unbalanced capacitor voltage of each SM in the MMC. Accordingly, this paper additionally proposes the rotation method and selective voltage balancing control for SMs to ensure effective performance of the method. In data center and telecommunication power supplies, the front-end dc–dc stage is required to operate with a wide input voltage range to provide hold-up time when ac input fails. Conventional LLC converter serving as the dc–dc stage is not suitable for this requirement, as the normal operation efficiency (at 400 V input) will be penalized once the converter is designed to achieve high peak gain (wide input voltage range). This paper examined the operation of the LCLC converter and revealed that the LCLC converter could be essentially equivalent to a set of LLC converters with different magnetizing inductors that are automatically adjusted for different input voltages. In nominal 400 V input operation, the LCLC converter behaves like an LLC converter with large magnetizing inductor, thus the resonant current is small. In the hold-up period, when the input voltage reduces, the equivalent magnetizing inductor will reduce together with switching frequency reducing, thus the converter achieves high peak gain. In this paper, a new design methodology is also proposed to achieve optimal utilization of the two resonant capacitors for high power application. To verify the effectiveness of the LCLC converter for hold-up operation, comprehensive analysis has been conducted; a detailed step by step design example based on capacitor voltage stress is introduced; an experimental LCLC prototype optimized at 400 V, with input voltage range of 250–400 V and 12 V/500 W as output has been presented. A single-stage three-phase ac–ac converter benefiting from a high-frequency alternating link voltage is proposed in this paper. In this converter, a very small film capacitor can transfer the energy from the input to the output, owing to the high-frequency alternating voltage of the link. This eliminates the need for large electrolytic capacitors that are typically used in dc-link ac–ac converters. Moreover, a compact high-frequency transformer at the link can replace the bulky low-frequency transformers, in case isolation is required. These features increase the power density as well as reliability of the proposed converter in comparison with the conventional dc-link converters. The number of required switches in the proposed converter is 12, which is less than the number of switches needed in matrix converters, leading to lower switching and conduction losses. Despite being single-stage, the proposed ac–ac converter is capable of both stepping up and stepping down the voltage and also frequency transformation. This eliminates the need for using cascaded power converters. In this paper, a new structure for a nonisolated boost dc–dc converter is proposed. The proposed converter generates higher voltage gain than some conventional nonisolated boost dc–dc converters. In this paper, the voltage and current equations of the elements and voltage gain in continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode are extracted. Then, the critical inductance converter is extracted and the current stresses in the switches are calculated. To achieve high voltage gain, a generalized structure based on the proposed structure generates for dc–dc converters. Meanwhile, the root mean square current relations of devices are obtained for an extended structure. In this paper, a high step-up quasi-Z Source (QZS) dc–dc converter is proposed. This converter uses a hybrid switched-capacitors switched-inductor method in order to achieve high voltage gains. The proposed converter have resolved the voltage gain limitation of the basic QZS dc–dc converter while keeping its main advantages, such as continuous input current and low voltage stress on capacitors. Compared to the basic converter, the duty cycle is not limited, and the voltage stress on the diodes and switch is not increased. In addition to these features, the proposed converter has a flexible structure, and extra stages could be added to it in order to achieve even higher voltage gains without increasing the voltage stress on devices or limiting the duty cycle. The operation principle of the converter and related relationships and waveforms are presented in the paper. Also, a comprehensive comparison between the proposed and other QZS based dc–dc converters is provided which confirms the superiority of the proposed converter. Simulations are done in power systems computer aided design (PSCAD) in order to investigate the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) capability of the converter. Constant on-time V^2 control for point-of-load buck converters has instability issues in the cases that the output capacitors' RC time constants are small. This paper intensively studies the proposed solution using capacitor current ramp compensation, which is a superior solution featuring fast response and universality. A frequency-domain small-signal model based on describing function method is proposed in this paper. The time-domain large-signal response to the load step change is analyzed. The analysis illustrates the unique transient response behaviors of the capacitor current ramp compensated V^2 control. The design optimization methodology based on frequency-domain and time-domain analysis is presented. The proposed model and the design guidelines are verified by the experimental results. This paper presents a generalized power-decoupling control scheme using a multiport isolated bidirectional converter for a multilevel inverter, which has multiple dc links inside. In the proposed method, a single power-decoupling capacitor is needed for all the dc links in the multilevel inverter cell. First, a prototype of the power-decoupling concept of individual H-bridge cells in the multilevel inverter is proposed, using a separate power-decoupling circuit. Then, a more advanced one-step power-decoupling method is proposed. The lifetime and reliability of the multilevel inverter is improved as film capacitors replace the large capacitance electrolyte capacitors. A multi-input ports/single output voltage-fed dual half-bridge converter (MDHB) is used for the power-decoupling circuit. A steady-state analysis for the peak and root mean square of the MDHB current is carried out for the loss breakdown. The currents are functions of the switching frequency, phase shift, leakage inductance, turn ratio, and output voltage, which make the multiport transformer design complex. A design methodology is proposed, which takes into account the design of the copper and core losses as functions of the switching frequency and number of turns. Furthermore, a special winding method for the input port is illustrated to obtain identical leakage inductances for the uniform current distribution in the multiport transformer. The proposed MDHB employs a current-sensorless power-decoupling control that contributes to the spontaneous ripple rejection of all the dc links without individual link current information, as well as to the cost and size reduction. Hence, the ripple-rejection controller is independent of the control configuration of the multilevel inverter, and also available for universal applications of various inverter topologies. Since the primary-input ports of MDHB share a single magnetic core for interfacing the ripple power to the unified secondary ripple capacitor, the controller design becomes difficult in considering the dynamic interaction among the ports, along with the average-voltage control loop design. In this paper, the dynamic analysis and controller design procedure of the circuit is also presented. The power decoupling is achieved even when the ripple frequency is other than the double frequency of the inverter output, since the single-pole transfer function of the small-signal model of the MDHB allows sufficient phase margin, along with high bandwidth. Class $E^2$ DC–DC converter composed of Class $E$ power amplifier (PA) and rectifier is a promising candidate for MHz wireless power transfer. It is soft-switching based and able to achieve high efficiency at MHz frequency. However, the converter implemented through traditional static design is sensitive to the variations of operation condition. Its performance gets deteriorated when DC load and coil coupling deviate from their respective optimum values. This paper demonstrates that the degradation of system efficiency is mostly due to the mismatch of PA load, and the efficiency drop can be efficiently improved by adding an L-type impedance matching network (IMN) after PA. A fixed IMN is sufficient to maintain a high efficiency, while a tunable IMN is required to ensure stable output power when operation condition dramatically changes. Key techniques, particularly system-level optimization, are discussed in this paper that ensure high efficiency over a wide range of variation in operation condition and also with reduced capacitor/inductor tuning ranges in the IMN. The 6.78-MHz Class $E^2$ DC–DC converters with and without the fixed/tunable IMN are fabricated and measured for validation purposes. The experimental results show that both high efficiency ( $>$66%) and stable output power (around 9 W) are maintained for the tunable converter when there are variations in the DC load and coil coupling. This paper introduces a non-isolated high step-up dc–dc converter with dual coupled inductors suitable for distributed generation applications. By implementing an input parallel connection, the proposed dc–dc structure inherits shared input current with low ripple, which also requires small capacitive filter at its input. Moreover, this topology can reach high voltage gain by using dual coupled inductors in series connection at the output stage. The proposed converter uses active clamp circuits with a shared clamp capacitor for the main switches. In addition to the active clamp circuit, the leakage energy is recycled to the output by using an integrated regenerative snubber. Indeed, these circuits allow soft-switching conditions, i.e., zero voltage switching and zero current switching for active and passive switching devices, respectively. The mentioned features along with a common ground connection of the input and output make the proposed topology a proper candidate for transformer-less grid-connected photovoltaic systems. The operating performance, analysis and mathematical derivations of the proposed dc–dc converter have been demonstrated in the paper. This paper presents a hybrid seven-level converter based on T-type converter and H-bridge cascaded suitable for low-voltage and high-power-density applications. The operation principles and conduction paths are analyzed comprehensively. Voltage balance control of the floating capacitors is the key point of this paper. Mathematical expressions of capacitor voltage balance conditions are deduced based on sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). The results show that floating capacitor voltages are only balanced when the modulation index is below 0.82 under SPWM. In order to enlarge the modulation index ensuring the capacitor voltage balance, space vector modulation (SVM) is also applied to regulate floating capacitor voltages taking advantage of redundant switching vectors. Meanwhile, in SVM, there are no additional control requirements for the capacitor voltage. Taken both SPWM and SVM into consideration, the limit to the range of operation for this seven-level converter is presented, which is a function of the modulation index and the power factor. The merit of dc voltage utilization improvement in this topology is also analyzed based on simulation results. An extended-duty-ratio (EDR) boost converter is studied extensively in this paper for high voltage gain applications with a wide input (and/or output) voltage range. The EDR is a unique combination of an interleaved, multiphase boost converter and switched capacitor configuration that achieves high voltage gain with significantly lower switch voltage stress and switching losses compared to conventional high-gain solutions. Most of the switches in the multiphase EDR experience only a fixed fraction of the output voltage ($1/M, 2/M$ , etc., where $M$ is the number of phases). Through extensive analysis over a wide operating range, it is shown here that the EDR boost converter has inherent current sharing among the phases only in a limited range of duty ratio— $(M-1)/M \leq D \leq 1$. As the duty ratio reduces beyond this range as required in wide input voltage applications, inherent current sharing property is lost. In this paper, techniques to ensure current sharing under all operating zones without requiring current sensors are presented. Instead of having equal duty ratio for each phase, it is adjusted for each phase according to the operating region of the converter. Extensive analysis is presented to derive the required duty ratio changes for the different phases. This paper introduces a novel five-level nested neutral point piloted (NNPP) converter and analyzes the operating principle of five-level NNPP converter. This paper presents a novel space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) algorithm based on gh coordinate for five-level NNPP converter. First, the common-mode voltage is reduced by choosing the appropriate redundant switching states. After that, the floating-capacitor voltage balance control strategy is presented. The appropriate switch combinations of each phase are determined by the control requirements of floating-capacitor voltages respectively and the hardware mapping method of the switching states is presented. Furthermore, the neutral-point voltage balance control strategy is presented. In order to balance the dc-link capacitor voltages, the seven-segment switching sequence is selected according to the control requirements of dc-link capacitor voltages and the neutral-point voltage regulatory factor is introduced to regulate the durations of the redundant switching states in a switching cycle. Finally, the validity of the novel SVPWM algorithm with decoupling control strategies of floating-capacitor voltages and dc-link capacitor voltages is verified by the experimental results of five-level NNPP converter under steady-state and dynamic conditions. A new static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) based on the diode-clamped modular multilevel converter (DCM2 C) is proposed in this paper. In this converter topology, the capacitor voltage is clamped by using a low power rating diode in each submodule. The quantity of voltage sensors is significantly reduced and is free from the number of voltage levels. Furthermore, the voltage balancing control method becomes very simple and the capacitor voltage balance speed is fast. Based on the structure of modular multilevel converter, the DCM2C-STATCOM has the capability of Var compensation and negative-sequence current compensation. The topology characteristics and compensation control method of DCM2C-STATCOM are investigated in this paper. Experimental results obtained from a laboratory prototype validate that the capacitor voltage of the proposed DCM2C-STATCOM can be well balanced and the Var and negative-sequence current compensations are effective. An isolated bidirectional dc–dc converter, which combines parallel-connected two-level converters (TLCs) on the medium-voltage side and a modular multilevel converter (MMC) on the high-voltage side, namely a TLC-MMC converter, is a promising candidate for the interconnection of medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) and HVdc grids. Different from typical phase-shift controlled isolated bidirectional dc–dc converters, transformer currents of a TLC-MMC converter are regulated by the MMC in a closed-loop manner in order to achieve extremely low switching losses and low total device rating of power-semiconductor devices in TLCs. This paper addresses the dedicated operation technique and the voltage-balancing control of the TLC-MMC converter. The MMC in the TLC-MMC converter operates with six-step phase voltages and sinusoidal phase currents. Such an operation makes the MMC present remarkable differences to ac–dc applications. The direct-modulation technique, which is the most-used technique performed to MMCs in line-frequency ac–dc power conversion, has been concluded not applicable to the MMC in a TLC-MMC converter due to the significant sixth-order oscillation resulted in the dc-link voltage. Thus, the indirect-modulation technique is employed, and consequently a closed-loop voltage-balancing control is mandatory for the MMC. Possible measures for voltage balancing have been explored, and effective voltage-balancing control with a simplified implementation is proposed. In this paper, a multisource switched capacitor based boost multilevel inverter is proposed. The proposed topology features less number of components, high gain, self-charging capability of capacitors, reduced size of filter components. The modes of operation of the proposed converter and design guidelines of converter components are discussed. A comprehensive comparative study of the proposed converter topology with the topologies in the literature is given. Analytical expression for capacitor energy utilization (CEU) factor for the proposed topology is derived and the feasibility of the proposed converter with respect to CEU for the designed power rating is verified. The analytical performance of the proposed converter topology is verified through simulation studies. The common mode voltage and leakage current in the proposed topology are analyzed. Experimental prototype of the proposed converter topology with two sources and two capacitors for power rating of 500 W is developed and tested with resistive, inductive, and nonlinear loads. This paper proposes the design of gray wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm-based fractional order proportional integral (FOPI) controller for power factor correction (PFC) using interleaved dc–dc single ended primary inductance converter converter with improved performance characteristics such as speed, accuracy, and stability. The detailed analysis and modeling of the proposed converter are presented. The optimal parameters of FOPI controller are obtained using GWO algorithm to improve the speed of response of the system. FOPI controller provides better performance in terms of robustness and stability since it has one more adjustable parameter than the conventional proportional integral (PI) controller. The cascade control strategy is implemented for the proposed converter with GWO-based FOPI controller as inner current and outer voltage controllers for PFC and load voltage regulation. The performance characteristics of the proposed system are analyzed and compared with conventional and other optimization techniques using MATLAB/Simulink software. A prototype of the proposed converter controlled by TMS320C2000 microcontroller for an output power of 200 W is tested and validated with the simulation results. The proposed system is used for powering devices like robots in critical applications such as military, space craft, etc., where stability, speed, and accuracy are major concerns. In the no-load condition, LLC converter usually fails to regulate its output voltage although it operates at a high switching frequency. Till now, it is hard to obtain the exact relationship between design parameters and the maximum switching frequency for no-load regulation capability. In this paper, a specific criterion for no-load regulation of LLC converter is provided, without using active components or other modulation schemes. By analyzing the macroscopic switching period and microscopic switching transition in the no-load condition, it is shown that not only the peaking resonant current during the switching transition, but also the resonant tank design affect the no-load regulation of the LLC converter, which affects the no-load regulation capability. Furthermore, the relationship among design parameters is analyzed and the design guideline is also provided to achieve no-load regulation at the specified maximum switching frequency. Photovoltaic (PV) systems having rechargeable batteries are prone to be complex and costly because multiple converters are necessary to individually regulate a load, PV panel, and battery. This paper proposes novel nonisolated multiport converters (MPCs) integrating a bidirectional pulsewidth modulation (PWM) converter and phase-shift-switched capacitor converter (PS-SCC) for standalone PV systems. A PWM converter and PS-SCC are integrated by reducing the total switch count, realizing the simplified system and circuit. In the proposed MPCs, two control freedoms of duty cycle and phase shift angle are manipulated to individually regulate the load, PV panel, and/or battery. The detailed operation analysis was performed to mathematically derive gain characteristics and zero voltage switching operation boundaries. For the battery discharging mode, in which the PV panel is not available and the MPC behaves as a single-input–single-output converter with two control freedoms available, the optimized control scheme achieving the lowest rms current is also proposed to maximize power conversion efficiencies. Various kinds of experimental verification tests using a 200-W prototype were performed to verify the theoretical analysis and to demonstrate the performance of the proposed MPC. A novel high step-down dc–dc converter with voltage demultiplier cell is proposed in this paper, which is widely used in the high step-down applications such as electric vehicle and digital circuits. The combination of switched-capacitor and coupled-inductor is employed to build extended voltage demultiplier in the proposed converter, which makes a quite higher voltage conversion ratio than that of the existing counterparts. Thus, the proposed converter can achieve extremely low output voltage with an appropriate duty ratio, and the extreme duty cycle is avoided. Accordingly, voltage stress on power switches is greatly reduced. Then, mosfets with low conduction resistance could be utilized to reduce conduction loss. Importantly, zero-voltage switching could be achieved for the main switch, which promotes the conversion efficiency further. In addition, the coupled inductor operates not only as a filter inductor, but also as a transformer when the main switch is in the off state, which reduces the volume of the magnetic core and improves the power density of the converter. In this paper, a two-stage transformerless multiple-output converter is proposed for applications requiring a high voltage step-down ratio. The proposed circuit transfers power via a current interface and the use of current-source-mode (CSM) converters, resulting in low voltage stress and drastically simplified control. The first stage of this configuration is regulated to provide a constant current to the second stage. The second stage consists of series-connected CSM boost converters. The high step-down ratio of the proposed configuration reduces the voltage stress in the switches of the second stage. The series-connected CSM converters are inherently independent of each other, leading to a very simple control scheme without the need for decoupling of the input voltage of the interconnected converters. Input voltage variation to the system will not affect the input voltage of the second stage. Load variation in one output will not affect the other outputs. If one or more CSM converters are shorted, there is no impact on other converters. These advantages enable a high scalability. Besides, the first stage of the proposed configuration can operate both in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) with the same control strategy. A multiphase-interleaved non-isolated high step-up dc/dc resonant converter for high-current applications with wide load range is proposed in this paper. The converter consists of an inverter stage with multiple resonant inverters in parallel interleaving operation that is cascaded to a common diode–capacitor rectifier stage. The topology of the inverter stage is a variation of class E inverter, which is designed for voltage boosting and of which the voltage gain is insensitive to load change. The rectifier stage comprises multiple pairs (correlated to the number of inverters in parallel) of diodes in parallel and a small output capacitor, which makes it simple to implement and of low cost. Together, the voltage gain variance of the converter can be confined within a small value and zero voltage switching operation can be maintained over a wide load range. A detailed mathematical analysis of the proposed converter is conducted for systematizing its design. A prototype of the proposed converter with an input voltage of 23.6 V, a rated output voltage of 190 V, and a rated output power of 80 W at 486 kHz is constructed for verification. A family of bidirectional switched-capacitor (SC) converters with high-gain ratio of any positive integer is proposed in this paper for distributed energy resources applications. As compared with other existing SC converters achieving a same conversion gain, the main advantages of the proposed converters are that they require a relatively lower number of switches and capacitors, have a relatively lower switch's and capacitor's stress, and that their associated driver circuits are simpler to realize. Importantly, with the achievable conversion ratio being flexible and that the input and output of the proposed converters are of common ground, the proposed converters are widely suitable for many applications. Moreover, as the proposed converters do not possess magnetic component or any component that can severely degrade the converters’ performance at high temperature, they are especially useful for high-temperature applications. Besides, the proposed converters are capable of delivering bidirectional power, which is a key requirement for emerging applications with battery storages. Different aspects of the proposed converters, including a simple auxiliary power supply circuit for the MOSFETs’ drivers, will be discussed in this paper. A nine-time SC converter prototype that operates with 20-V input voltage, 100-W output, and at 75 kHz, is constructed and tested. Experiment results show that the maximum efficiency achievable with this prototype is over 98% (without driver's loss) and the efficiency over the entire load range between 25 and 100 W is over 95.5% including the driver's loss. The output voltage ripple of the SC converter is less than 1%. This paper presents a method for generating a multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector structure using a single dc source for induction motor drives. Multilevel dodecagonal structure combines the advantages of both multilevel and dodecagonal structures, and hence, generates low dv/dt phase voltage along with the elimination of fifth- and seventh-order harmonics over the entire modulation range. This eliminates low-order harmonic currents and prevents the generation of sixth-order torque ripple in the motor. The topology used requires only one dc source making four-quadrant operation of the drive system simpler compared to previously proposed multilevel topologies generating dodecagonal space vector structures. The topology used consists of a three-level flying capacitor (FC) inverter cascaded with a capacitor fed H-bridge. The FC inverter operates at a lower switching frequency and the low-order harmonics are eliminated by the switching action of the cascaded H-bridge inverter. The capacitors in the cascaded H-bridge modules are maintained at a substantially smaller voltage compared to the dc-link voltage and are inherently balanced during the pulsewidth modulation operation. This results in low switching loss, in the FC inverter as well as in the cascaded H-bridge inverter. Impedance-source networks are an increasingly popular solution in power converter applications, especially in single-stage buck–boost power conversion to avoid additional front-end dc–dc power converters. In the survey papers published, no analytical comparisons of different topologies have been described, which makes it difficult to choose the best option. Thus, the aim of this paper is to present a comprehensive analytical comparison of the impedance-source-based buck–boost inverters in terms of passive component count and semiconductor stress. Based on the waveform of the input current, i.e., with or without a transformer, and with or without inductor coupling, the impedance-source converters are classified. The main criterion in our comprehensive comparison is the energy stored in the passive elements, which is considered both under constant and predefined high frequency current ripple in the inductors and the voltage ripple across the capacitors. Two-level and multilevel solutions are described. In this paper, the Z-source converter is introduced to power factor correction (PFC) applications. The concept is demonstrated through a wireless power transfer (WPT) system for electric vehicle battery charging, namely Z-source resonant converter (ZSRC). Due to the Z-source network (ZSN), the ZSRC inherently performs PFC and regulate the system output voltage simultaneously, without adding extra semiconductor devices and control circuitry to the conventional WPT system such as conventional PFC converters do. In other words, the ZSN can be categorized as a family of the single-stage PFC converters. In addition, the ZSN is suitable for high-power applications since it is immune to shoot-through states, which increases reliability and adds a boost feature to the system. The ZSRC-based WPT system operating principle is described and analyzed in this paper. Simulations and experimental results based on a 1-kW prototype with 20-cm air gap between the system primary and secondary sides are presented to validate the analysis and demonstrate the effectiveness of the ZSN in the PFC of the WPT system. This paper extends the high-frequency transformer isolation concept to the Z-source (ZS) ac–ac converters and introduces a new family of high-frequency transformer isolated (HFTI) ZS ac–ac converters. The proposed HFTI-ZS converters retain all the benefits of their existing nonisolated counterparts, such as providing a larger range of output voltage with buck–boost functionality, reversing or maintaining the phase angle, reducing the in-rush and harmonic currents, and improving reliability. In addition to these benefits, the high-frequency (20 kHz) transformer (HFT) in the proposed ZS ac–ac converters provides the electrical isolation and safety with high power density as it eliminates the need for bulky and heavy line frequency (50 or 60 Hz) transformer for galvanic isolation, in applications such as dynamic voltage restorers, etc. The dc-blocking capacitor added in series with the HFT results in only ac voltage applied across its windings, which avoids its saturation. Various ZS-based HFTI ac–ac converters are proposed in this paper, and to verify their operation and advantages, example of quasi-ZS (qZS)-based isolated ac–ac converter is considered in detail. The commutation strategy is also developed to achieve the safe commutation, which avoids the current and voltage spikes without using any RC snubber. In a power electronics system, an electrolytic capacitor (E-Cap) is widely used, whose performance degradation can be reflected by the change of capacitance (C) and equivalent series resistance (ESR). This paper proposes a new online C and ESR monitoring scheme for the output electrolytic capacitor in a discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) flyback converter. The mathematical relationship between the instantaneous capacitor voltage and other parameters is analyzed and then the scheme of undetermined coefficients based on the multiple-spot sampling and least square method is further proposed. In addition, considering the particularity of high ripple current and the resultant voltage ripple variation range, especially with the temperature, an inverse ripple voltage isolation amplifier with variable amplification factor and negative voltage elimination is put forward so as to make digital signal processor identify the temperature change easily. The proposed scheme is noninvasive as only voltage signals need to be sampled and no current sensor is necessary. In this paper, a dual-capacitor-inductor-transformer (CLT) (D-CLT) soft-switching dc–dc converter has been proposed. Combining the multiresonant technology, the converter employs two high-frequency transformers in the resonant tank and exhibits desirable characteristics. The fundamental and the third-order harmonics can be utilized to transfer active power simultaneously. The share of third harmonic is larger than first component. Thus, the converter can use the 100-kHz controlling signals to mainly transfer the 300-kHz active power, which makes it easier to realize high power density. Moreover, the available range for the third power delivery is expanded as well. A resonant zero point is introduced into the voltage gain curves. It ensures broadened voltage gain range (from zero to the maximum) and good protection for overcurrent issue. Then, improved soft-switching performances have been achieved: All the switches achieve the zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) turn-on, whereas all the diodes obtain the zero-current-switching (ZCS) turn-on and quasi-ZCS turn-off. Switching losses are constrained to the minimum. To verify the feasibility of the proposed converter, a 330-W prototype is established and tested. The ultra-high voltage gain dc–dc converters are extremely required because of the low voltage level of many nonpolluting power resources. This paper proposes an ultra-high voltage gain converter based on an interleave technique and using three-winding coupled inductor and voltage multiplier cell. The interleave technique is useful for reducing the size of the filter components. In the proposed converter, high voltage gain is achieved without extreme duty cycle of solid-state switches. The voltage stress across the semiconductor devices can be reduced by increasing the turn ratio of the secondary of the coupled inductors. In addition, because of the implementation of the interleave structure, peak-to-peak variation of the main input current and switching losses are substantially reduced. This paper proposes a novel control strategy for three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) power converter. The proposed control scheme consists of three control loops, i.e., instantaneous power tracking control loop, voltage regulation loop, and voltage balancing loop. First, in the power tracking control loop, a set of adaptive sliding mode controllers are established to drive the active and reactive power tracking to their desired values via radial basis function neural network technology. In the voltage regulation loop, an efficient but simple adaptive controller is designed to regulate dc-link output voltage where the load is considered as an external disturbance. Moreover, a composite controller is developed in the voltage balancing loop to ensure imbalance voltages between two dc-link capacitors close to zero, in which a reduced-order observer is used to estimate sinusoidal disturbance improving the converter performance. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) represent an emerging topology in medium-voltage (MV) and high-voltage applications. But for MV variable-speed motor drives, the MMC faces the challenge of large capacitor voltage ripple at low speeds. Delightfully, a hybrid MMC (HMMC) has proved to be potential in MV motor drives, since this topology has a lower capacitor voltage ripple and does not introduce any common voltage to the motor. This paper proposed a method to decrease the average capacitor voltage of the HMMC, which can effectively drive the motor at very low speeds without significantly increasing the submodule (SM) capacitance. This paper explores the large-signal and small-signal dynamics of a series-capacitor (SC) buck-type converter and introduces an optimal closed-loop control scheme to accommodate both the steady-state and transient modes. As opposed to a conventional buck converter, where time-optimal control is realized by a single on–off cycle, in the SC-buck topology, there is a need to distribute the switching phases to satisfy the charge balance of the SC. The new control method merges a voltage-mode controller for the steady-state operation and a nonlinear, state-plane based transient-mode controller for load transients. A detailed principle of the operation of the SC-buck converter is provided and explained through an average-behavioral model and state-plane analysis. The operation of the controller is experimentally verified on a 20 W 12 V-to-1 V converter, demonstrating voltage-mode control operation as well as minimum-deviation and time-optimal responses for load transients. In this paper, analysis and design of a three-phase-isolated Cuk-based power factor correction (PFC) converter have been proposed. The proposed converter is operated in discontinuous output inductor current mode to achieve PFC at ac input. This avoids the inner current control loop which further eliminates the sensing of current. This makes the system more reliable and robust. The converter requires only one simple voltage control loop for output voltage regulation, and all the power switches are driven by the same gate signal which simplifies the gate driver circuit. The detailed operation of the converter and design calculations are presented. And also a small-signal model of the converter by using current injected equivalent circuit approach is presented to aid the controller design. The experimental results from a 2-kW laboratory prototype with 208-V line-to-line input voltage, 400-V output voltage are presented to confirm the operation of the proposed converter. An input power factor of 0.999, an input current total harmonic distortion of as low as 4.06%, and a high conversion efficiency of 95.1% are achieved from laboratory prototype. Cascaded multilevel inverter (CMI) is one of the most popular multilevel inverter topologies. This topology is synthesized with some series-connected identical H-bridge cells. CMI requires several isolated dc sources which brings about some difficulties when dealing with this type of inverter. This paper addresses the problem by proposing a switched-capacitor (SC)-based CMI. The proposed topology, which is referred to as switched-capacitor single-source CMI (SCSS-CMI), makes use of some capacitors instead of the dc sources. Hence, it requires only one dc source to charge the employed capacitors. Usually, the capacitor charging process in a SC cell is companied by some current spikes which extremely harm the charging switch and the capacitor. The capacitors in SCSS-CMI are charged through a simple auxiliary circuit which eradicates the mentioned current spikes and provides zero-current switching condition for the charging switch. The stability and small-signal analyses of the dual series-resonant dc–dc converter are investigated in this paper. The small-signal model of the converter is derived from the extended describing function analysis. Frequency-domain analysis is then employed to derive the small-signal transfer functions of the converter. This procedure establishes an insightful understanding about the effects of the converter parameters and operating conditions on the stability and transient behavior of the converter. The results are used to illustrate the development of the single-loop, voltage-feedback control scheme for the dual series-resonant dc–dc converter. It is demonstrated that the proposed control method enables the converter to regulate its output voltage in the case of abrupt changes in input voltage and output load, and it provides improvement in the transient response. An experimental prototype of the dual series-resonant dc–dc converter is built and the performance of the control scheme is experimentally evaluated by applying abrupt changes in the operating condition of the converter. Efficient and compact high-power high-frequency passive energy storage components are required for miniaturization of power converters and remain a challenging obstacle in power electronics. In this paper, multiple energy storage mechanisms are analyzed on an order-of-magnitude basis to identify potential alternatives for conventional passive components, especially magnetics, which have frequency-dependent power losses. The high energy density of mechanical storage methods provides an attractive alternative to the widely used LC resonance. Piezoelectric transduction is explored, and the performance of a piezoelectric resonator is compared to that of an LC resonator in terms of efficiency and power handling capabilities in a resonant switched-capacitor-type circuit. The analysis provides a basis for exploring potential passive energy storage component technologies and comparing their performance limits with those of electromagnetic passive components. The analysis shows that both electromagnetic and mechanical resonance, in the ideal scenarios, can offer much better performance than do passive component technologies in use today. A prototype resonator is built with off-the-shelf C0G capacitors to confirm the low loss and high power predicted by the model. The resulting resonator has an effective resistance of 2.76  $\text{m}{\Omega }$ at 2.70 MHz in 1  ${\text{cm}^{3}}$ volume and can handle 7.42 kW within the rated temperature. Model predictive control (MPC) for modular multilevel converter (MMC) systems has drawn attention among researchers in recent years due to its straightforward implementation, ability to control multiple objectives in a single cost function, and excellent dynamic response. Even though MPC seems promising for the MMC, it suffers from an excessive increase in computational complexity when the number of submodules (SMs) per arm (N) is increased. The computational load can be reduced by decoupling the SM capacitor voltage control from the cost function and balancing them in an external voltage sorting algorithm. In this paper, a further reduction of computations in the MPC is achieved by the preselection of control options that can satisfy the control objectives in the next sampling time. The preselection algorithm generates a greatly reduced number of control options to be computed by a straightforward MPC loop at each sampling time. In addition, the MPC together with the preselection algorithm can generate $2N+ 1$ output voltage levels in the MMC while maintaining a low $dv/ dt$ in the output voltage and suppressing the circulating currents in MMCs with considerable number of SMs. The steady-state and dynamic performance of the MMC operating with the proposed method is verified by simulation and experimental results. In this paper, a new single-stage half-bridge (HB) resonant $LLC$ converter additionally employing one resonant capacitor and two relays with one package is proposed, compared with a single-stage HB $LLC$ converter. Moreover, a center-tapped transformer is replaced with a coupled transformer. Since the proposed converter changes the turns ratio of the coupled transformer using a relay according to low- or high-input-voltage range, it can decrease the range of its needed voltage gain. It means that the proposed converter can be designed with large transformer magnetizing inductance compared with the conventional single-stage HB $LLC$ converter. As a result, the primary conduction and turn-off losses are reduced. Moreover, in low input voltage range, it has smaller total primary wire resistance of the transformer due to parallel connection of the coupled transformer, which decreases its conduction loss. In addition, additionally employed small-sized components can be inserted to the conventional system. This paper proposes a circuit structure that can improve the power-conversion efficiency \eta e of an AC–DC boost converter. The circuit uses a 1:1 transformer and a voltage boost circuit composed of an inductor, a capacitor, and a diode. The transformer forces the converter to operate in continuous conduction mode for input current, and thereby reduces input ripple. The voltage boost circuit enables the switch to operate in critical conduction mode, so the power loss due to turn-on of switch and reverse recovery of diode is minimized. The proposed converter has high \eta e over a wide range of AC input voltage $V_{{\rm{ac}}}:\,\eta _{e}= 92.9\% $ at $V_{{\rm{ac}}}= {\text{85}}\,{\text{V}} and \eta e= 97.4\% at V{\rm{ac}}= {\text{265}}\,{\text{V}}, when the converter was operated at DC output voltage of 400 V and output power of 500 W. The temperature of the switch stabilized at ∼84 °C for $V_{{\rm{ac}}}= {\text{85}}\,{\text{V}}$ , at ∼70 °C for $V_{{\rm{ac}}}= {\text{110}}\,{\text{V}}$, and at ∼42 °C for $V_{{\rm{ac}}}= {\text{220}}\,{\text{V}}$, whereas that in other AC–DC converters either failed or stabilized at much higher levels. A novel hybrid resonant zero-voltage zero-current switching three-level converter with capacitive output filter is proposed in this paper, which undergoes half of the input voltage for switches and is suitable for offshore wind farms in medium-voltage dc (MVDC) collection systems. The proposed converter, utilizing two transformers with very different power ratings, adopts insulated-gate bipolar transistors for all six power switches and operates in discontinuous current mode and can achieve zero-current switching for the four main switches and rectifier diodes over the whole load range. Meanwhile, the auxiliary switches with small current rating can realize zero-voltage switching naturally. Hence, the switching loss is reduced, which is vital in MVDC applications. This paper presents a detailed steady-state analysis and ac small-signal modeling of the power stage of pulse-width modulated A-source converter. The voltage and current waveforms along with their corresponding expressions describing the converter operation are presented in detail. The input-to-output and input-to-capacitor dc voltage transfer functions are determined. The minimum inductance required to ensure continuous conduction mode is derived. The expressions for the semiconductor devices stresses are also presented. The dc, averaged equivalent circuit is derived using the circuit averaging technique. A complete derivation of the small-signal model including the converter parasitic resistances are presented followed by the power stage transfer functions relevant to the capacitor voltage loop, such as: 1) duty cycle-to-capacitor voltage; and 2) input-to-capacitor voltage. In addition, the expressions for the network input impedance and output impedance are derived. Finally, experimental validations of the derived small-signal models are performed, both in frequency and time domain for a laboratory prototype of an A-source converter. Modularity and high reliability from redundancy are the two attractive advantages of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). This paper elaborates a switch open-circuit fault diagnosis and a fault-tolerant operation scheme for MMCs with distributed control. The proposed fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control method can significantly improve the reliability of the MMC while maintaining the modularity of its software implementation. By distributing fault diagnosis into submodules, its local controller is capable of identifying the switching devices in open-circuit fault without extra hardware circuitry. Based on the real-time measurements of submodule terminal voltage and arm current, single, or multiple faulty switches can be identified within 3.5 ms without triggering faulty alarms. Furthermore, a new fault-tolerant operation is proposed to maintain the output current, internal dynamics, and switching harmonics unchanged after the faulty submodule is bypassed. This is achieved by resetting the period and phase registers in the local controller according to the information of bypassed submodules. The control loops of the MMC are not influenced by the proposed fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant operation, making the operation transition seamless and reliable. Experimental results show that fault identification and system reconfiguration can be completed within 5 ms, and the MMC can seamlessly and smooth ride through the switch open-circuit faults without severe malfunction and catastrophic damages. In medium voltage high power (>1 MW) application, the parallel-connected current source converters (CSCs) are normally applied to increase the power region. By interleaving the paralleled CSCs, multilevel (five level) output current can be generated, and thus improving the harmonic performance. However, the common-mode voltage (CMV), common-mode current (CMC), and circulating current in the parallel CSC-fed motor drive system pose serious challenges to the system's operation, which should be addressed carefully. Moreover, for transformerless drives, the common-mode resonance under varying motor speeds is a potential problem due to the series connection of common-mode inductor and filter capacitor in the common-mode loop. This paper thoroughly investigates the common-mode resonance in transformerless parallel CSC system. A multilevel space-vector-modulation based method for the parallel CSC system is proposed to suppress the CMV and common-mode resonance. As a result, the circulating current and CMC excited by the CMV can be reduced correspondingly. The modular multilevel matrix converter (M3C) is a promising topology for high-voltage high-power applications. Recent researches have proved its significant advantages for adjustable-speed motor drives compared with the back-to-back modular multilevel converter. However, the branch energy balancing in the M3C presents great challenge especially at critical-frequency points where the output frequency is close to zero or grid-side frequency. Generally, this balancing control depends on the appropriate injection of inner circulating currents and the common-mode voltage (CMV), whereas their values are hard to determine and optimize. In this paper, an optimization-based predictive control method is proposed to calculate the required circulating currents and the CMV. The proposed method features a broad frequency range balancing of capacitor voltages and no reactive power in the grid side. For operation at critical-frequency points, there is no increase on branch voltage stresses and limited increase on branch current stresses. This paper introduces a hybrid modular multilevel converter (MMC) with the full-bridge submodules (FBSMs) inserted in the ac side. It is intended for redistributing arm powers of the MMC system to reduce the submodule (SM) capacitor voltage fluctuation by injecting high-frequency powers in upper and lower arms without disturbing the output voltage. New power distribution of the hybrid MMC system can be realized by controlling the SMs and FBSMs working under the high-frequency powers. The proposed FBSMs in the hybrid MMC system also perform as the harmonic power generator to eliminate the common-mode voltages in the ac side. Since the FBSMs locate in the ac side of the hybrid MMC system, the traditional MMC control method can be directly applied in arm control of the hybrid MMC system. Meanwhile, relationship between the arm powers and SM capacitor voltage has been analyzed in detail to reduce the SM capacitor voltage ripples by redistributing the frequency spectrum of arm powers.
