This paper proposes a novel polygonal voltage space vector structure (SVS) having 30 sides, for a star-connected induction motor drive. The SVS eliminates the presence of harmonics up to 25th order from motor phase voltage throughout the entire modulation range, providing a torque profile devoid of lower order pulsations. Linear modulation is extended till 99.63% of base speed without exceeding the motor phase voltage rating. Topology consists of a dc-link fed primary inverter and two equal low voltage modular capacitor fed secondary inverters. Here the harmonics generated by the primary inverter is canceled by the secondary inverter which acts as a switched capacitive filter. Detailed description of the SVS generation and timing calculations are provided in this paper. This paper presents a novel seven-level inverter topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. It consists of eight active switches and two inner flying capacitor (FC) units forming a similar structure as in a conventional active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter. This unique arrangement reduces the number of active and passive components. A simple modulation technique reduces cost and complexity in the control system design without compromising reactive power capability. In addition, compared to major conventional seven-level inverter topologies, such as the neutral point clamped, FC, cascaded H-bridge, and ANPC topologies, the new topology reduces the dc-link voltage requirement by 50%. This recued dc-link voltage makes the new topology appealing for various industrial applications. Experimental results from a 2.2-kVA prototype are presented to support the theoretical analysis presented in this paper. In low-power applications of photovoltaic (PV) systems, the transformerless grid-connected inverters have been preferred to increase the efficiency and reduce the cost, size, and power losses when they are compared to the ones with the transformer. A transformerless single-phase inverter topology with a single dc-link capacitor for the grid-connected PV systems is proposed in this paper. The proposed inverter has been simulated by using a cooperation process of the MATLAB and SPICE package programs and it has been implemented for experimental verification. The proposed inverter reduces the high-frequency common-mode leakage current caused by parasitic capacitances of PV panels, whereas it is controlled with the unipolar sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation. Also, the results show that the common-mode voltage remains constant. The efficiency of the proposed inverter has been compared to that of the most common topologies having the dc-link decoupling during the zero voltage states. This paper describes a dc-link voltage control method of a single-phase back-to-back cascaded H-bridge inverter (SBCI) for a medium-voltage motor drive system. The main advantage of the SBCI topology over the conventional regenerative cascaded H-bridge topology with a three-phase active front-end (AFE) is a simple system structure, which is composed of an input transformer, a power cell, a current sensor, etc. However, the challenging points of the SBCI are larger voltage ripple in the dc-link capacitor and imbalance of dc-link voltages of each phase. The asymmetric dc-link voltage of each power cells could cause unstable operation such as over-modulation due to the lack of the dc-link voltage of a particular phase and result in over-voltage or under-voltage faults. In this paper, the control strategy of the dc-link voltage for the SBCI that uses the negative-sequence voltage of the converter is described. The proposed control method is verified with a computer simulation whose target is a 6.6-kV–1.25-MW medium-voltage drive system. Also, through the experimental setup with the prototype SBCI whose power rating is 16.2 kVA, the dc-link voltage of each AFE has been controlled within a 0.5% error of its reference value at the full load. This paper proposes a novel dc power electronic transformer (DCPET) topology for locomotive, ac/dc hybrid grid, dc distribution grid, and other isolated medium-voltage and high-power applications. Compared with conventional PET topology, the proposed DCPET has fewer power semiconductor devices and high-frequency isolation transformers, which can improve the power density and reliability. Fault handling or redundancy design can be achieved to further improve the reliability when some dc–dc modules break down. Also, input voltage sharing control can be omitted to simplify the control system and improve the stability. Meanwhile, soft switching is guaranteed for all the switches, which is beneficial to increase switching frequency and improve power density. In this paper, the principle, evolution, and control of the proposed DCPET are respectively presented and studied in detail. This paper proposes a novel method for instantaneous balancing of neutral-point (NP) voltages with stacked multilevel inverters (MLIs) for variable-speed drives. The stacked MLI uses series-connected dc sources and NPs (connecting points of dc sources) to obtain the desired levels. The balancing of NP voltages are obtained by using a low-voltage-capacitor-fed cascaded H-bridge (CHB) per phase of a symmetrical six-phase induction machine (IM), which ensures zero current drawn from NPs (at any given instant). Since no current is drawn from NPs, the single dc-link operation with stacked capacitors is also possible. The scheme is suitable for applications, where low-voltage dc sources and batteries are stacked to form a dc link. A variable-speed operation is done using a seven-level inverter scheme for a symmetrical six-phase IM, which is formed by three dc-link stacked capacitors cascaded with two low-voltage-capacitor-fed CHBs per phase. Furthermore, the method is extended for an open-end IM to obtain a seven-level common-mode eliminated space vector structure using a single dc link. The generalization of this method for any stacked $n$ -level inverter without NP voltage deviation is also presented in this paper. In this paper, a new soft-switching bridgeless single-phase power factor correction (PFC) converter is presented and analyzed. Employing an auxiliary switch, the input current dead angle that is the main drawback of the existing buck-type PFCs is omitted, and thus, the power factor (PF) is improved, which is the main contribution of the paper. Proposed PFC converter operates under discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) and draws sinusoidal input current from power supply inherently. All switches and diodes are turnedonandoffunder soft switching, which leads to low switching losses and elimination of diode reverse recovery problems. Also, minimum numbers of semiconductor devices are in the power flow path that reduce the conduction losses. A 120-W laboratory prototype is implemented and experimental results verify the validity of theoretical analysis and show efficiency of 92.1%. A high step-up dc–dc converter is proposed in this paper. The presented converter benefits from some advantages such as high voltage gain and continuous input current, which makes it suitable for the renewable energy applications. The presented converter is based on the SEPIC converter. However, the converter voltage gain is improved by employing a coupled inductor and two voltage multipliers. A passive clamp circuit is also added to the proposed converter that increases the voltage gain and reduces the voltage stress on the main switch. Thus, a switch with low $R_{{\text{DS(on)}}}$ will be needed that decreases the conduction loss. Besides, the voltage stress on the output diode in the proposed converter is reduced, which alleviates reverse recovery problem. In high-power applications, parallel-operated T-type three-level pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifiers (T3LPRs) are widely employed to improve the power capacity and system reliability. For parallel-operated T3LPRs, there are two important issues need to be properly addressed: 1) the neutral-point potential (NPP) balancing, and 2) the zero sequence circulating current (ZSCC) between the common ac and dc bus. In this paper, the fluctuation of NPP in a T3LPR and the generative mechanism of ZSCC in parallel-operated T3LPRs are first investigated. The zero sequence voltage (ZSV) difference between the parallel-operated T3LPRs is identified as the main excitation source of the ZSCC problem. Meanwhile, the disconnection of the neutral point and the control effect difference of NPP balancing in each T3LPR also affect the ZSCCs within the parallel-operated T3LPRs. To adjust the ZSV of T3LPRs, the dwell time of the positive small voltage vector in each switching period of the converter, which is usually adjusted to balance the NPP, is also required to be controlled to suppress ZSCC. Therefore, in this paper, to avoid the possible conflict, an improved modulation mechanism is designed to guarantee simultaneous ZSCC suppression and NPP balancing. The neutral points of each T3LPR are connected. Then, by adjusting the dwell time of the positive small voltage vector, the charging time of two dc capacitors is adjusted to balance the NPP, and the ZSV differences between different T3LPRs are adjusted to suppress ZSCCs. To avoid the control effect difference of independent NPP balancing in different T3LPRs, all T3LPRs share the same value marking the difference between two dc capacitor voltages. Thus, a communication with a greatly reduced baud rate requirement is needed for NPP balancing to transfer the difference between the two dc capacitor voltages. Moreover, no extra circuit is needed for ZSCC suppression. These approaches make the proposed improved space vector PWM strategy much more practical and easy to employ. This paper proposes a new single-phase single-stage switched-boost inverter with four switches. Like the quasi-Z-source inverter and quasi-switched boost inverter (qSBI), the proposed inverter has the main features as continuous input current, buck/boost voltage with single-stage conversion, and shoot-through immunity. Compared to the qSBI, the proposed inverter uses one more capacitor and one less switch. This paper presents the operating principles, pulse-width modulation control strategy, parameter design guidelines, and simulation results for the proposed inverter. To verify the performance of the proposed inverter, an 800-W prototype was built with an 110 V/50 Hz output voltage in stand-alone and grid-connected modes. In this paper, a new structure of nonisolated boost dc–dc converters based on voltage-lift technique is proposed. In comparison with conventional nonisolated boost dc–dc converters, the proposed converter generates higher voltage gain. In this paper, the relations between voltage and current of all elements in continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode are calculated as well as voltage gain in each mode. An extended-duty-ratio (EDR) boost converter is studied extensively in this paper for high voltage gain applications with a wide input (and/or output) voltage range. The EDR is a unique combination of an interleaved, multiphase boost converter and switched capacitor configuration that achieves high voltage gain with significantly lower switch voltage stress and switching losses compared to conventional high-gain solutions. Most of the switches in the multiphase EDR experience only a fixed fraction of the output voltage ($1/M, 2/M$ , etc., where $M$ is the number of phases). Through extensive analysis over a wide operating range, it is shown here that the EDR boost converter has inherent current sharing among the phases only in a limited range of duty ratio— $(M-1)/M \leq D \leq 1$. As the duty ratio reduces beyond this range as required in wide input voltage applications, inherent current sharing property is lost. In this paper, techniques to ensure current sharing under all operating zones without requiring current sensors are presented. Instead of having equal duty ratio for each phase, it is adjusted for each phase according to the operating region of the converter. Extensive analysis is presented to derive the required duty ratio changes for the different phases. Conventional single-phase power-factor-correction (PFC) rectifiers with active power decoupling capability typically require more than three active switches in their circuits. By exploring the concept of power-buffer cell, a new single-stage PFC rectifier with two active switches, one inductor and one small power-buffering capacitor is reported in this paper. The proposed converter can achieve high-power factor, wide output voltage range, and power decoupling function without using electrolytic capacitor. Additionally, an automatic power decoupling control scheme that is simple and easy to implement is proposed in this paper. The operating principle, control method, and design considerations of the proposed rectifier are also provided. A 100-W prototype with ac input voltage of 110 Vrms and a regulated dc output voltage ranging from 30 to 100 V has been successfully designed and practically tested. The experimental results show that with only a 15 μF power-buffering film capacitor, the proposed converter can achieve an input power factor of over 0.98, peak efficiency of 93.9%, and output voltage ripple of less than 3%, at 100-W output power. A new static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) based on the diode-clamped modular multilevel converter (DCM2 C) is proposed in this paper. In this converter topology, the capacitor voltage is clamped by using a low power rating diode in each submodule. The quantity of voltage sensors is significantly reduced and is free from the number of voltage levels. Furthermore, the voltage balancing control method becomes very simple and the capacitor voltage balance speed is fast. Based on the structure of modular multilevel converter, the DCM2C-STATCOM has the capability of Var compensation and negative-sequence current compensation. The topology characteristics and compensation control method of DCM2C-STATCOM are investigated in this paper. Multilevel converters are widely applied in medium voltage (MV) drive systems due to the attractive features, such as the ability to use devices with lower voltage ratings, high equivalent switching frequency, etc. Recently, a multilevel topology, named seven-level hybrid clamped (7L-HC), is proposed for MV drives. It has a competitive number of devices, showing the potential to build low-cost 7L converters. However, to ensure the wide frequency range operation and power quality of MV drives, its dc-link capacitors and floating capacitors must be controlled properly with balanced voltages. In this paper, an active voltage balancing method is proposed for the 7L-HC converter. This method can effectively balance all the capacitor voltages under a wide frequency range. This paper presents a voltage multiplier topology that is a hybrid between a Cockcroft–Walton multiplier and a Dickson charge pump. The Cockcroft–Walton structure exhibits significant output voltage drop under load as the number of multiplier stage increases. This is because all coupling capacitors are connected in series. Dickson charge pump mitigates this issue by connecting all capacitors in parallel. But this solution comes at the expense of large capacitor voltage stress at the last multiplier stage. The proposed hybrid structure arranges some capacitors in parallel and others in series, thereby achieving low output voltage drop and low capacitor voltage stress at the same time. We develop a model that predicts hybrid multiplier's performance and validates it experimentally. We also demonstrate a 60–2.25 kV dc–dc converter based on a 16-stage hybrid voltage multiplier which achieves a voltage gain of 12.8 while keeping the highest capacitor voltage stress to 660 V. Load-independent output characteristics of inductive power transfer (IPT) systems are increasingly popular in battery charging. This paper proposes a novel variable-parameter T-circuit (VT) for an IPT system charging a battery with constant current (CC) or constant voltage (CV) output. The VT can transfer a CC/CV input to a CC or CV output by using an ac switch and a passive component (inductor or capacitor). An IPT system with a VT for CC–CV charging can reduce the number of passive components and ac switches. Besides, the proposed VT merits more design freedom of charge current/voltage with the constraints imposed by the loosely coupled transformer parameters compared to that of the traditional one. In addition, there are three kinds of VTs for various IPT charging systems with different requirements. A 400 W laboratory-scale prototype with a 150 mm air gap was built to verify the theoretical analyses. Both electronic load and lead-acid battery are utilized to verify the charging profile of the proposed method. The experimental results of the IPT system indicate that the fluctuation of the charging current in CC mode is less than 2%, and the change rate of charging voltage in CV mode is within 2.9%. In the no-load condition, LLC converter usually fails to regulate its output voltage although it operates at a high switching frequency. Till now, it is hard to obtain the exact relationship between design parameters and the maximum switching frequency for no-load regulation capability. In this paper, a specific criterion for no-load regulation of LLC converter is provided, without using active components or other modulation schemes. By analyzing the macroscopic switching period and microscopic switching transition in the no-load condition, it is shown that not only the peaking resonant current during the switching transition, but also the resonant tank design affect the no-load regulation of the LLC converter, which affects the no-load regulation capability. Furthermore, the relationship among design parameters is analyzed and the design guideline is also provided to achieve no-load regulation at the specified maximum switching frequency. The three-level full-bridge (TLFB) dc−dc converter has been widely used in high-voltage, high-power applications. In the experimental test, the neutral-point voltage deviation appears; moreover, it has also been found out that if the flying capacitors are introduced, the input capacitor voltages could realize self-balance even if no active balancing solutions are adopted. In the previous publications, the role of flying capacitors is generally considered to extend the range of soft switching; however, the self-balance ability has not been mentioned or investigated in any publications thus far. In order to fill this gap, this paper provides the detailed mode operation analysis of the TLFB converter and reveals the cause of the imbalance. In addition, the mechanism of the self-balance ability provided by the flying capacitors is explained in detail, which gives a deep insight into the converter. At last, the influence factor of the voltage error in steady state has been analyzed, and the specific expression of the voltage error is also derived. Without active control, the voltage fluctuations of the dc-link and flying capacitors in a 4-level hybrid-clamped converter (4L-HCC) become excessively large in low-frequency operation. This paper studies the switching state redundancy inherent in a 4L-HCC and proposes a new capacitor voltage balancing and stabilizing method to minimize the dc-link and flying capacitor voltage fluctuations. A straightforward algorithm is developed based on a logic table to select the suitable switching states. Verified by simulation and experimental testing results, the new method and algorithm virtually eliminate all the big voltage fluctuations of capacitors at low and zero frequencies, greatly enhancing the robustness and reliability of a 4L-HCC. This paper proposes a three-phase, five-level, non-regenerative pulsewidth modulated rectifier using only two active switches (minimum required) per phase, which drastically reduces gate driver requirement and hardware complexity. It draws sinusoidal input current at close to unity power factor. All the semiconductor devices are rated at only one fourth of the dc-link voltage, and none of them requires any transient voltage balancing snubber. A total of 8 out of the 14 diodes per phase undergo soft switching transition under all operating conditions, which increases its efficiency. No extra hardware circuitry for balancing the flying capacitors (FCs) or the dc-link mid-point voltage are required, which further reduces hardware complexity and increases the conversion efficiency. The proposed topology does not need any sophisticated startup procedure for charging the FCs either, which solves the problem of semiconductor overvoltage during starting. A 3-kW laboratory prototype is built to experimentally verify the proposed topology. When providing ac output, modular multilevel converters (MMCs) experience power fluctuation in the phase arms. The power fluctuation causes voltage ripple on the module capacitors, which grows with the output power and inversely to the output frequency. Thus, low-frequency operations of MMCs, e.g., for motor drives, require injecting common-mode voltages and circulating currents, and strict dc voltage output relative to ground is impossible. To address this problem, this paper introduces a novel module topology that allows parallel module connectivity in addition to the series and bypass states. The parallel state directly transfers power across the modules and arms to cancel the power fluctuations and hence suppresses the capacitor voltage ripple. The proposed series/parallel converter can operate at a wide frequency range down to dc without common-mode voltages or circulating currents; it also allows sensorless operation and full utilization of the components at higher output frequencies. In high-voltage applications, the magnitude of total semiconductor losses (on-state and switching) determines the viability of modular-type multilevel converters. Therefore, this paper presents a new cell arrangement that aims to lower total semiconductor loss of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) to less than that of the half-bridge modular multilevel converter (HB-MMC). Additional attributes of the proposed cell are: it eliminates the protective thyristors used in conventional half-bridge cells that deviate part of the dc-fault current away from the antiparallel diode of the main switch when the converter is blocked during a dc short-circuit fault, and it can facilitate continued operation of the MMC during cell failures without the need for a mechanical bypass switch. Thus, the MMC that uses the proposed cell retains all advantages of the HB-MMC such as full modularity of the power circuit and internal fault management. The claimed attributes of the proposed cell are verified using illustrative simulations and reduced scale experimentations. Additionally, this paper provides brief and critical discussions that highlight the attributes and limitations of popular MMC control methods and different MMC cells structures proposed in the literature, considering the power electronic system perspective. This paper extends the voltage-doubler concept to the single-phase SEPIC rectifier in discontinuous conduction mode and, as a consequence, novel rectifiers are proposed. A comparison with the classic SEPIC rectifier shows that the proposed converters can either provide reduced voltage stress on the semiconductors for the same output voltage level or supply double the gain of the output voltage with the same voltage stress. The proposed voltage-doubler SEPIC rectifiers provide a high power factor with no current control and they can be applied in order to improve the static gain of the structure, which can make the SEPIC rectifier suitable for applications that require a high voltage level. In this paper, the generic structure based on a three-state switch, four different implementations of the proposed concept (including bridgeless structures), steady-state analysis, a dynamic model, system control, and experimental results are presented. The proposed rectifiers were verified by experimental results obtained with a prototype built with the following specifications: 1000 W output power, 220 V input voltage, 400 V output voltage, and 50 kHz switching frequency. This paper presents the analysis and design of an isolated high-voltage LLC resonant dc–dc full-bridge converter based on symmetrical quadrupler rectifier (SQR). Unlike conventional Cockcroft–Walton and full-bridge diode rectifiers, the SQR circuit provides significant improvement in power density by reducing the transformer turns-ratio without much increase in the output impedance. Moreover, the LLC converter can provide additional voltage boost, if operated, below the series resonant frequency of the LLC tank. The operating region of the converter is chosen in such a way that the converter always operates in ZVS for all line and load conditions with additional voltage boost. A new method based on basic differential equation is proposed for the accurate analysis and design of the converter and subsequently, the key results are compared with a first harmonic approximation based analysis method. A 120 V dc input, 2 kV output, 200 W laboratory prototype has been designed, built, and tested. This paper studies pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques suitable for a four-level five-phase open-end winding (OeW) drive. The drive comprises a five-phase induction machine, supplied using two two-level voltage source inverters with isolated and unequal dc-link voltages, in the ratio 2:1. A decoupled carrier-based (CB) PWM modulation strategy, based on unequal voltage reference sharing between the two converters, is introduced in this paper. The stability of dc-link voltages in OeW drives is investigated next, using a novel analysis technique. Several modulation methods are analyzed and the results show that application of the coupled PWM technique, with carriers having in-phase disposition, leads to overcharging of the capacitor in the dc-link of the inverter intended to operate with the lower dc-link voltage. On the other hand, the proposed decoupled CB PWM scheme naturally eliminates the dc-link capacitor overcharging problem. These findings are verified experimentally, using open-loop V/f control. Two different decoupled CB modulation methods are compared and the best performing modulation method is selected and incorporated further into an OeW drive with field-oriented control. The presented steady state and transient experimental results demonstrate that the decoupled CB PWM technique is suitable for high-performance variable speed drive applications. A family of bidirectional switched-capacitor (SC) converters with high-gain ratio of any positive integer is proposed in this paper for distributed energy resources applications. As compared with other existing SC converters achieving a same conversion gain, the main advantages of the proposed converters are that they require a relatively lower number of switches and capacitors, have a relatively lower switch's and capacitor's stress, and that their associated driver circuits are simpler to realize. Importantly, with the achievable conversion ratio being flexible and that the input and output of the proposed converters are of common ground, the proposed converters are widely suitable for many applications. Moreover, as the proposed converters do not possess magnetic component or any component that can severely degrade the converters’ performance at high temperature, they are especially useful for high-temperature applications. Besides, the proposed converters are capable of delivering bidirectional power, which is a key requirement for emerging applications with battery storages. Different aspects of the proposed converters, including a simple auxiliary power supply circuit for the MOSFETs’ drivers, will be discussed in this paper. A nine-time SC converter prototype that operates with 20-V input voltage, 100-W output, and at 75 kHz, is constructed and tested. Experiment results show that the maximum efficiency achievable with this prototype is over 98% (without driver's loss) and the efficiency over the entire load range between 25 and 100 W is over 95.5% including the driver's loss. In this paper, the Z-source converter is introduced to power factor correction (PFC) applications. The concept is demonstrated through a wireless power transfer (WPT) system for electric vehicle battery charging, namely Z-source resonant converter (ZSRC). Due to the Z-source network (ZSN), the ZSRC inherently performs PFC and regulate the system output voltage simultaneously, without adding extra semiconductor devices and control circuitry to the conventional WPT system such as conventional PFC converters do. In other words, the ZSN can be categorized as a family of the single-stage PFC converters. In addition, the ZSN is suitable for high-power applications since it is immune to shoot-through states, which increases reliability and adds a boost feature to the system. The ZSRC-based WPT system operating principle is described and analyzed in this paper. Various magnetically coupled impedance source (MCIS) networks have been proposed in the literature for increasing voltage gain and modulation index simultaneously while reducing the number of passive components used in the converter. However, applications of such networks have been limited by their discontinuous currents drawn from the sources and/or high stresses experienced by their components. This paper thus proposes three new MCIS networks named, respectively, as quasi-Y-source, quasi-Γ-Z-source, and quasi-T-source or quasi-trans-Z-source networks. These new networks inherit all advantages of the existing MCIS networks. In addition, they demonstrate advantages like continuous input currents, reduced source stresses, and lower component ratings that are not achievable by other existing networks. Further, dc-current-blocking capacitors used in the networks help to avoid saturation of magnetic core. Derivations of all two-winding MCIS networks, including existing and new networks, from the generalized three-winding MCIS networks are then systematically illustrated, before comparing them. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are being developed for the grid connection of offshore wind or tidal farms. In order to reduce the construction and maintenance costs, it is desirable to reduce the weight and volume of the system. In current MMC submodule designs, the reservoir capacitor usually accounts for over 50% of the total volume and 80% of weight. This paper presents a new design concept and control principle for a submodule using the stacked switched capacitor (SSC) architecture that can significantly reduce the capacitor size in an MMC. Practical considerations for a high-voltage high-power SSC-based MMC submodule are presented in this paper, through the design of a 21-level, 40-kV (pole-pole dc), 19.1-MW, grid-connected system, and the concept is demonstrated experimenttally on a scaled-down 400-V, 12.3-Apeak laboratory prototype submodule. It is shown that with the proposed SSC architecture, the total volume of capacitors in each submodule can be reduced by more than 40% without significantly increasing the power loss. The low threshold voltage of Gallium Nitride enhancement mode FETs is a concern in synchronous dc–dc buck converters. This paper presents a converter using a gate drive with a negative biased gate voltage on the low-side FET to improve the dV/dt robustness. The resulting much larger voltage drop during the dead time conduction is a concern as it can quickly overcharge the bootstrap capacitor voltage. This paper demonstrates that with a negative biased gate voltage, the rise in the bootstrap capacitor voltage is predominantly caused by the change in effective dead time conduction due to a variation in output load. A spice model to estimate the change is presented and verified. This paper also found that a change in the bootstrap capacitor voltage must be prevented as it leads to a significant change in turn-on dynamics, resulting in higher dV/dt stress with an increase in output load. To prevent a change in bootstrap capacitor voltage, different techniques such as Zener diode clamping and an external free-wheeling Schottky diode are tested and discussed. Finally, a modification of a standard bootstrap circuit using a series inductor is proposed and tested. It has been found to be the most effective method in preventing a variation in the bootstrap capacitor voltage and should be included when using a negative gate drive in a GaN dc–dc buck converter. This paper proposes a novel modular equalization architecture for series-connected electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) modules, each consisting of multiple cells connected in series. Cell voltages in a module are equalized by an inductive voltage divider (IVD)-voltage multiplier (VM)-based cell equalizer, while module voltages are unified by switched capacitor converters (SCCs). Square wave voltages generated at switching nodes of the IVD-VM-based cell equalizers are utilized to drive the SCC-based module equalizers, realizing the switchless topology of SCC-based module equalizers. The required switch count of the proposed system can be halved compared to conventional systems, allowing simplified circuit. An experimental equalization test for three EDLC modules, each consisting of six cells in series, was performed from an initially voltage-imbalanced condition. Many research works have been conducted on increasing the efficiency of interleaved boost converters (IBCs) applied for power factor correction (PFC) by using high-performance power electronic devices and soft switching circuits, which are not helpful in reducing the hardware cost and systematic complexity. In this paper, three intrinsic parameters affecting the efficiency of IBC PFC are found and analyzed, including the switching frequency value, boost inductor value, and output voltage value. Based on the findings, considering the limitations of current ripples, power factor, maximum magnetic flux density, and volume of a boost inductor, an optimization design method for high-efficiency IBC PFC is proposed. A 3.3-kW IBC PFC prototype is developed based on Si devices. This paper presents an improved H8 power converter for common-mode voltage (CMV) reduction and electromagnetic interference suppression. The proposed H8 converter can realize zero CMV variation when entering and leaving the zero state, which is mainly achieved by both the improvement of the structure and the control strategy. For the system structure, two switches are added on the dc bus to float the ac part of the three-phase converter in the zero state. Besides, additional capacitors are used to realize controllable CMV. For the control strategy, a simple control strategy is proposed for the H8 converter. It can automatically adapt to the flowing orientation of the load current to realize synchronous switching of the power switches, which effectively eliminates the impact of the dead time. Through analysis, simulations, and experiment, a comparison between the proposed H8 converter and the conventional H6 converter is performed. Results validate the effectiveness of the H8 topology. Impedance-source inverters using coupled inductors have been investigated as alternatives for providing high step-up voltages. However, leakage inductances of the coupled inductors have commonly led to lower overall effectiveness, in addition to generating high dc-link voltage spikes. The latter raises voltage stresses of switches, which in turn, may reduce the power levels of the inverters. A high step-up Y-source inverter has therefore been proposed in this paper to provide a high boost with a smooth dc-link voltage ensured by proper recycling of the leakage energy. These features have been verified by comparing simulation and experimental results of an existing Y-source and the proposed inverters. In this paper, a developed structure is proposed for high step-up nonisolated noncoupled inductor based multiport dc–dc converters. The voltage gain per number of devices of the proposed topology is higher than that of similar topologies. This means that, by using the same number of devices, the proposed topology can generate higher gains than other structures. In other words, the proposed topology utilizes less number of devices for producing the same voltage gain, which leads to less total cost, size, weight, and complexity. Despite high voltage gain, the normalized peak inverse voltage (NPIV) on switches/diodes is low. Higher number of input ports leads to higher gains and lower NPIVs on devices. The load energy can be absorbed and stored in first input unit. Modularity, simple structure, continuous input currents, and low input current ripple are the other profits of proposed topology. A decentralized control method for power module (PM) capacitor voltage and switching frequency balancing in modular multilevel converter is presented in this paper. The proposed method is composed of a central controller, six arm controllers, and several group controllers. The group controller is only in charge of the PM capacitor voltage balancing within a corresponding group, and the arm controller is in charge of the PM capacitor voltage balancing and PM switching frequency balancing among groups within an arm. A control method based on a PI controller using the average PM capacitor voltage of each group to keep voltage balancing among groups is proposed. A dynamically adjusted extra exchange number strategy based on the voltage difference of each group is also developed to balance the PM switching frequency among groups. The key advantages of the proposed method are the reduction in the number of the PM capacitor voltages that need to be transmitted and sorted in each group controller as well as the reduction of the communication burden between the group and arm controllers. The proposed method is also highly effective under PM faults. The voltage ripple factor and the PM switching frequency of the proposed method are almost identical to the conventional centralized methods. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is attractive for medium- or high-power applications because of the advantages of its high modularity, availability, and high power quality. Reliability is one of the most important challenges for the MMC consisting of a large number of submodules (SMs). The capacitor monitoring is one of the important issues in the MMC. This paper proposed a reference submodule (RSM)-based capacitor monitoring strategy for the capacitance estimation in the MMC, where the capacitances in the monitoring SMs can be estimated based on the capacitor voltage relationship between the RSM and the monitoring SMs. The proposed monitoring strategy does not rely on the information of all capacitor voltage and current, which effectively simplifies the algorithm for capacitance estimation. The simulation studies with the time-domain professional tool PSCAD/EMTDC are conducted and a down-scale MMC prototype is also tested in the laboratory with the proposed capacitor monitoring strategy. The ultra-high voltage gain dc–dc converters are extremely required because of the low voltage level of many nonpolluting power resources. This paper proposes an ultra-high voltage gain converter based on an interleave technique and using three-winding coupled inductor and voltage multiplier cell. The interleave technique is useful for reducing the size of the filter components. In the proposed converter, high voltage gain is achieved without extreme duty cycle of solid-state switches. The voltage stress across the semiconductor devices can be reduced by increasing the turn ratio of the secondary of the coupled inductors. In addition, because of the implementation of the interleave structure, peak-to-peak variation of the main input current and switching losses are substantially reduced. A simple buck–boost LED driver suitable for battery operated applications with limited input voltage level is presented in this paper. Soft switching performance is provided for the main switch via a resonant circuit to improve the converter efficiency. The incorporated auxiliary switch also performs under zero voltage switching condition. Both power switches can be driven with a simple gate drive circuit, so, the additional switch does not add any driving complexity. In addition, only one magnetic element is utilized in the proposed LED driver which contributes to circuit simplicity and lower weight and size. Also, all diodes turn off at zero current switching which eliminates the reverse recovery losses and improves efficiency. A laboratory prototype converting 12 V input voltage to 32 V output operating at 26 W output power is implemented and tested to verify the effectiveness of the proposed LED driver. A 1-φ hybrid nine-level inverter (H9LI) topology has been proposed in this paper. The proposed H9LI topology uses a simple phase disposition pulsewidth modulation strategy to generate nine-voltage levels in the output. The main advantage of this topology is that it has a low switch count (ten switches) compared to the existing nine-level inverter topologies. To regulate the voltage across auxiliary capacitor, two innovative control techniques are proposed, which are integrated with the inverter modulation technique itself. Hence, it does not require any extra voltage balancing circuits to maintain the voltage across the auxiliary capacitor and input dc capacitors. A major advantage of these control techniques is that they eliminate the sensing of the coupled inductor current. Another significant advantage of H9LI is that loss distribution among all the power switches is more uniform compared to existing nine-level inverters. Due to low part count and absence of extra voltage balancing circuits, the H9LI achieves higher efficiency (η ≍ 94.5%) and lower cost. Furthermore, the requirement of filter size reduces due to the presence of coupled inductor in H9LI. In this paper, a novel space-vector pulsewidth modulation technique for a five-level active neutral-point clamped (5L-ANPC) inverter is proposed to eliminate the common-mode voltage (CMV). For the 5L-ANPC inverter, which produces a good output voltage performance and lowdv/dt, the total 125 voltage vectors can be generated, among which the proposed scheme employs only 19 voltage vectors producing a zero CMV. Due to the limitation of voltage vectors selected, the dc-link capacitor voltages of the 5L-ANPC inverter cannot be balanced by themselves. Therefore, the capacitor voltages of the inverter should be controlled by choosing the redundant switching states appropriately. High step-down voltage conversion is necessary to bridge the voltage gap between main power converters and low-voltage auxiliary electronics in power conversion systems. Switched capacitor converters (SCCs) are an attractive candidate as a high step-down converter, but their poor voltage regulation capability may limit their applications. Pulsewidth modulation (PWM) SCCs with adjustable high step-down voltage conversion are proposed in this paper. The proposed PWM SCCs can be derived from traditional SCCs by replacing an energy transfer capacitor with a switched-capacitor-inductor (SCL) cell that comprises inductors, capacitors, and diodes to realize PWM-controllable voltage conversion. The voltage step-down ratio of the proposed PWM SCCs is not only PWM controllable but also adjustable with structures of SCCs and SCL cells. This paper proposes a Class-DEMtuned power amplifier. The proposed amplifier achieves zero-voltage switching (ZVS), zero-voltage derivative switching (ZVDS), and zero-current switching (ZCS) at turning-on, and ZVS, ZVDS, ZCS, and zero-current derivative switching at turning-off. Therefore, the switching losses are extremely low, which is suitable for high-frequency operation. Moreover, the switch voltage stress is low, which is no more than its input voltage. The three-phase four-wire inverter with split dc-link capacitors can supply unbalanced loads. For the purpose of reducing the filter inductors, a neutral inductor could be introduced into the neutral line. This paper analyzes the operation principle of the three-phase four-wire inverter with split dc-link capacitors when a neutral inductor is introduced. It is illustrated that the neutral inductor can reduce the zero-sequence switching harmonics in the voltages between the phase-leg midpoints and the output neutral point, thus the filter inductors can be reduced. The optimized design of the neutral inductor and filter inductors is proposed with the considerations of the inductor current ripple, the ability of supplying unbalanced loads, and the total energy stored in the inductors. The equivalent circuits of the three-phase four-wire inverter with split dc-link capacitors and neutral inductor is derived in the α–β–0 frame, and the zero-axis voltage regulator is modified to suppress the third-order harmonic in the zero-sequence current caused by the deadtime of the drive signals for the power switches. Finally, the experimental results from a 9-kW prototype are provided to prove the effectiveness of the proposed optimized design of the neutral inductor and filter inductors and the control strategy of the inverter. In this paper, a family of step-up resonant switched-capacitor converters (RSCs) with a continuously adjustable conversion ratio is proposed based on the Cuk dual-resonance core (DRC) featuring two resonant paths. By adopting the on-time fixed frequency modulation, the two resonant paths can conduct simultaneously and satisfy the charge balance of the flying capacitor during the overlapping period. As a result, the conversion ratio—upper bounded by two determined by the circuit configuration—can vary continuously and efficiently even at the light load condition (1/10 of the rated power). A comprehensive analysis—the operation principle, voltage-gain curve, and voltage/current stresses—about the DRC is given. In addition, the Cuk DRC was extended to the series–parallel switched-capacitor converter (SCC), Fibonacci SCC, and voltage doubler to form a family of step-up RSCs, whose voltage-gain curves of different topologies are derived. Moreover, a characteristic comparison between the Cuk DRC and the traditional “direct” and “indirect” resonant core is given. Then, a 48 to 62–94.6 V resonant core with peak efficiency 97.8% and maximum power 120 W under the open loop condition was built. Integration of decoupling capacitors into silicon carbide (SiC) metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (mosfet) modules is an advanced solution to mitigate the effect of parasitic inductance induced by module assembly interconnects. In this paper, the switching transient behavior is reported for a 1.2-kV SiC mosfet module with embedded dc-link capacitors. It shows faster switching transition and less overshoot voltage compared to a module using an identical package but without capacitors. Active power cycling and passive temperature cycling are carried out for package reliability characterization and comparisons are made with commercial Si and SiC power modules. Scanning acoustic microscopy images and thermal structure functions are presented to quantify the effects of package degradation. The results demonstrate that the SiC modules with embedded capacitors have similar reliability performance to commercial modules and that the reliability is not adversely affected by the presence of the decoupling capacitors. The five-level nested neutral-point-clamped (5L-NNPC) converter is one of the most promising topologies for medium-voltage (2.3–7.2 kV) high-power applications such as medium-voltage drives, wind energy conversion systems, and grid-connected systems. The 5L-NNPC requires a fewer number of switching devices, freewheeling and clamping diodes, and flying capacitors compared to the existing five-level multilevel converters. In the 5L-NNPC topology, each flying capacitor voltage is regulated at one-fourth of the dc-bus voltage to obtain the five-level operation. Due to the lack of redundant switching states, it is difficult to control the flying capacitor voltages by using the pulse-width-modulation-based classical control methods. This paper proposes a model-predictive current control (MPCC) approach to control the flying capacitor voltages along with the output currents of the 5L-NNPC converter. The discrete-time model of 5L-NNPC is developed to implement the MPCC scheme. The simulation and experimental studies are conducted to verify the dynamic and steady-state performance of 5L-NNPC with the MPCC scheme. The performance of the proposed MPCC approach is compared with the conventional space-vector-modulation-based voltage-balancing approach. This paper proposes a control method for a five-level hybrid flying-capacitor (5L-HFC) inverter, of which structure stems from the conventional five-level active neutral-point-clamped (5L-ANPC) topology by dividing the dc-link stage into three series-connected capacitors. In this inverter, the voltage stress on the power switches connected to the dc link is reduced by a half compared with that of the 5L-ANPC topology, thus the lower number of equally voltage-rated power devices can be employed. Also, the power losses in the 5L-HFC inverter are more evenly distributed than in the 5L-ANPC. In order to balance the dc-link capacitor voltages, a third-order harmonic offset injection is applied. When a diode rectifier is used to supply the dc bus voltage, the balancing method is not effective if the modulation index is higher than 0.64. Thus, an auxiliary circuit is needed to support the balancing of the dc-link capacitor voltages. However, the unbalancing problem can be overcome in a full-range operation without the auxiliary circuit if the back-to-back configuration is utilized. This paper presents an overview of resonant and hybrid switched-capacitor converters with a particular focus on multimode operation. The multimode approach is discussed as a tool to affect high efficiency and power density across a wide load range, provide variable regulation, and, as a general framework, to conceptualize the advantages and opportunities of the approach compared to more traditional dc–dc converters. A general analysis is provided to quantify the advantage of hybrid and resonant converters that factors in the tradeoffs between size and loss in the magnetic component and voltage stress on the active devices. A broader set of operating modes is presented that spans continuous and discontinuous conduction and includes resonant, quasi-resonant, and more traditional buck- or boost-like operation. A prototype flying-capacitor multilevel converter is presented to demonstrate the variety of operating modes and motivate important considerations such as voltage balance on the flying capacitors.
