Various methods have been presented in the past to emulate the electrical behavior of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). To meet the demands for the reliability aspect study of MMCs, this paper proposes a viable setup to emulate the thermal behavior and to investigate its feasibility for reliability testing and thermal model validation of the power modules in the MMC. The proposed mission profile emulator has three distinctive features: 1) capable of emulating and measuring the thermal stresses of power modules; 2) capable of implementing practical switching profile as a full-scale MMC; and 3) having significantly reduced requirement for dc power supply compared to existing setups used for electrical studies. Theoretical discussions, and simulations as well as the experimental results are presented to demonstrate the capability of the mission profile emulator both electrically and thermally. This paper presents bidirectional grid-connected modular multilevel converters (MMC) with direct digital control and division-summation processes to achieve power-injection and rectification functions. A direct digital control is developed to track current references, regulate dc-bus voltage and cell voltage, and balance the upper and lower dc-bus voltages. It can accommodate wide filter-inductance variation and take care of source voltage harmonics to achieve tight current tracking and low distortion output current. Based on the power-balance principle, the commands of arm currents can be determined directly. In this paper, the MMC configuration is introduced first, and then the control laws for current tracking and voltage regulation are derived in detail. This paper presents an interleaved boost converter with a bifold Dickson voltage multiplier suitable for interfacing low-voltage renewable energy sources to high-voltage distribution buses and other applications that require a high-voltage-gain conversion ratio. The proposed converter was constructed from two stages: an interleaved boost stage, which contains two inductors operated by two low-side active switches, and a voltage multiplier cell (VMC) stage, which mainly consists of diodes and capacitors to increase the overall voltage gain. The proposed converter offers a high-voltage-gain ratio with low voltage stress on the semiconductor switches as well as the passive components. This allows the selection of efficient and compact components. Moreover, the required inductance that ensures operation in the continuous conduction mode (CCM) is lower than the one in the conventional interleaved boost converter. The distinction of the proposed converter is that the inductors’ currents are equal, regardless of the number of VMCs. Equal sharing of interleaved boost-stage currents reduces the conduction loss in the active switches as well as the inductors and thus improves the overall efficiency, as the conduction power loss is a quadratic function. In this paper, the theory of operation and steady-state analysis of the proposed converter are illustrated and verified by simulation results. This paper proposes a new class of topologies of single-stage high-frequency ac-link power converters, which is capable of providing both voltage step up/down within a wide frequency and voltage ranges. The proposed family, which supports bidirectional power flow, can interface various single/multi-port dc and/or single/multi-phase ac systems to provide dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–dc, or ac–ac power conversion. In this family of converter, which offers a very modular structure, a small inductor that forms the link exchanges power entirely or partially between the source and load. The proposed family can function in buck, boost, and/or buck–boost modes of operation, and a combination of these modes of operation is also feasible. In comparison to the parallel inductive four-quadrant link converters, the proposed family features a significantly reduced link peak current, reduced switch ratings, and reduced total number of power switches. These features enhance the efficiency, reduce the total cost, and increase the power density of the system. In order to further improve the overall efficiency of the system, minimize the current/voltage stress over all utilized semiconductor devices, and lower electromagnetic interference (EMI), a small capacitor is placed in parallel with the link inductor to realize soft-switching operation for the proposed configurations. Moreover, the proposed converters have the potential to incorporate a lightweight single-phase high-frequency transformer for electrical isolation. The proposed circuit topologies prevent reverse recovery issues and eliminate losses corresponding to body diodes of power switching devices via utilizing power switches in conjunction with external fast recovery diodes. The proposed family offers a very high level of reliability owing to its immunity from short circuit of input and output terminals and open circuit of the link inductor, which may occur in other power converters due to commutation problem resulting from a short deadtime or an overlap time between switches, unwanted control command, delay in electronic circuits, or EMI noise's misgating on or off, in addition to the absence of electrolytic capacitors in the power circuit. A control approach is also developed to regulate input and output currents in one stage of power conversion. A detailed theoretical analysis, operation, design methodology, and control strategy of the proposed family are provided in this paper, and the effectiveness and performance of the proposed converter family are verified via simulation results and experimentally. In this paper, a new class of bidirectional partial-resonance power converters is presented. The proposed family can be configured to interface single- or multi-port dc, single- or multi-phase ac systems at input-side and/or output-side. The proposed family offers a very modular structure, which can lead to cost reduction from a common designed module. In this converter, which accomplishes power conversion in a single stage, a small inductor placed in series with the input and output switch-bridges forms the link. This small link inductor is responsible for transferring power between different ports of the system. The proposed topologies can operate in buck, boost, and buck–boost modes of operation to step up and/or step down the voltage. In buck–boost mode of operation, the converter is controlled such that the power is entirely transferred through the link inductor; whereas, in buck or boost modes of operation only a fraction of the power is transferred through the link inductor, and the remaining power is directly transferred from input phases to the output phases. Galvanic isolation, which is typically a prominent factor contributing to power density of a converter, can be provided by means of a compact and lightweight single-phase high-frequency transformer added to the link. In comparison with earlier generations of partial-resonance inductive-link power converters, in the proposed converter, the level of link peak current and consequently power-loss, as well as voltage and current stress of switches are dramatically decreased. A very small film capacitor can be placed in parallel with the link inductor to facilitate zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) operation for all the switches/diodes. Apart from increasing the overall efficiency, minimized dv/dt stress and improvement in power density are achieved by adding the link capacitor. The proposed converter employs four-quadrant switches, i.e., bidirectional-conducting bidirectional-blocking switches, and charges the link inductor in both positive and negative directions in each cycle. In view of this, better utilization of the link inductor and lower total harmonic distortion (THD) are offered. Furthermore, two distinct switching algorithms are developed for the proposed family of converters. In this paper, the detailed behavior of the proposed family is investigated analytically, and simulation and experimental results are presented to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed converter. A low-power proof-of-concept prototype with input voltage of 59 V/161 V, load voltage of 178 V/73.5 V, maximum switching frequency of 4.9 kHz/3.65 kHz at 215 W/450 W in a step-up/step-down operation is considered for the experimental verification. This paper studies the high power density bidirectional dc–dc converter with interleaving, soft-switching, and near critical conduction mode (near-CRM) operation. Systematic design and control methods are proposed to enhance the effectiveness of passive currents balancing between multiple interleaved phases without using individual phase current feedbacks. This paper first analyzes the zero voltage turn-on operation, including the turn-off energy diversion by the added snubber capacitor and the turn-off resonance models. Second, the intrinsic inverse co-relation between the phase current deviation and the resulting effective duty cycles variation is quantitatively formulated and modeled as a closed-loop mechanism that balances the currents passively. Then, the design constraints of the system parameters including the snubber capacitance, dead time, and valley currents of the near-CRM mode are formulated to guarantee the effectiveness of counteracting the current unbalance. Finally, a variable switching frequency control is proposed to actively control the valley current and maintain the current balancing effectiveness throughout the operating range. This article develops a series of improved Z-source dc–dc converters to realize additional voltage pumping and high power density through two propositions. Proposition 1 develops two improved positive- and negative-connected Z-source dc–dc converters (IPZSC and INZSC), using the same number of components as in the existing voltage pumping Z-source converter. Based on Proposition 1, Proposition 2 proposes four novel embedded Z-source dc–dc converters (EZSCs) by placing the source in a specifically designed position, which realizes lower voltage stresses across capacitors. Various technical aspects of the proposed EZSCs, including operations, power losses, and small signal stability analyses are detailed in this paper. Besides, comparisons between the proposed series of improved Z-source dc–dc converters and other existing Z-source dc–dc converters are thoroughly made to demonstrate the better performance of the EZSCs. In data center and telecommunication power supplies, the front-end dc–dc stage is required to operate with a wide input voltage range to provide hold-up time when ac input fails. Conventional LLC converter serving as the dc–dc stage is not suitable for this requirement, as the normal operation efficiency (at 400 V input) will be penalized once the converter is designed to achieve high peak gain (wide input voltage range). This paper examined the operation of the LCLC converter and revealed that the LCLC converter could be essentially equivalent to a set of LLC converters with different magnetizing inductors that are automatically adjusted for different input voltages. In nominal 400 V input operation, the LCLC converter behaves like an LLC converter with large magnetizing inductor, thus the resonant current is small. In the hold-up period, when the input voltage reduces, the equivalent magnetizing inductor will reduce together with switching frequency reducing, thus the converter achieves high peak gain. In this paper, a new design methodology is also proposed to achieve optimal utilization of the two resonant capacitors for high power application. To verify the effectiveness of the LCLC converter for hold-up operation, comprehensive analysis has been conducted; a detailed step by step design example based on capacitor voltage stress is introduced; an experimental LCLC prototype optimized at 400 V, with input voltage range of 250–400 V and 12 V/500 W as output has been presented. A single-stage three-phase ac–ac converter benefiting from a high-frequency alternating link voltage is proposed in this paper. In this converter, a very small film capacitor can transfer the energy from the input to the output, owing to the high-frequency alternating voltage of the link. This eliminates the need for large electrolytic capacitors that are typically used in dc-link ac–ac converters. Moreover, a compact high-frequency transformer at the link can replace the bulky low-frequency transformers, in case isolation is required. These features increase the power density as well as reliability of the proposed converter in comparison with the conventional dc-link converters. The number of required switches in the proposed converter is 12, which is less than the number of switches needed in matrix converters, leading to lower switching and conduction losses. Despite being single-stage, the proposed ac–ac converter is capable of both stepping up and stepping down the voltage and also frequency transformation. This eliminates the need for using cascaded power converters. In this paper, a new structure for a nonisolated boost dc–dc converter is proposed. The proposed converter generates higher voltage gain than some conventional nonisolated boost dc–dc converters. In this paper, the voltage and current equations of the elements and voltage gain in continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode are extracted. Then, the critical inductance converter is extracted and the current stresses in the switches are calculated. To achieve high voltage gain, a generalized structure based on the proposed structure generates for dc–dc converters. Meanwhile, the root mean square current relations of devices are obtained for an extended structure. In this paper, a new soft-switching bridgeless single-phase power factor correction (PFC) converter is presented and analyzed. Employing an auxiliary switch, the input current dead angle that is the main drawback of the existing buck-type PFCs is omitted, and thus, the power factor (PF) is improved, which is the main contribution of the paper. Proposed PFC converter operates under discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) and draws sinusoidal input current from power supply inherently. All switches and diodes are turnedonandoffunder soft switching, which leads to low switching losses and elimination of diode reverse recovery problems. Also, minimum numbers of semiconductor devices are in the power flow path that reduce the conduction losses. A 120-W laboratory prototype is implemented and experimental results verify the validity of theoretical analysis and show efficiency of 92.1%. A high step-up dc–dc converter is proposed in this paper. The presented converter benefits from some advantages such as high voltage gain and continuous input current, which makes it suitable for the renewable energy applications. The presented converter is based on the SEPIC converter. However, the converter voltage gain is improved by employing a coupled inductor and two voltage multipliers. A passive clamp circuit is also added to the proposed converter that increases the voltage gain and reduces the voltage stress on the main switch. Thus, a switch with low $R_{{\text{DS(on)}}}$ will be needed that decreases the conduction loss. Besides, the voltage stress on the output diode in the proposed converter is reduced, which alleviates reverse recovery problem. In this paper, a high step-up quasi-Z Source (QZS) dc–dc converter is proposed. This converter uses a hybrid switched-capacitors switched-inductor method in order to achieve high voltage gains. The proposed converter have resolved the voltage gain limitation of the basic QZS dc–dc converter while keeping its main advantages, such as continuous input current and low voltage stress on capacitors. Compared to the basic converter, the duty cycle is not limited, and the voltage stress on the diodes and switch is not increased. In addition to these features, the proposed converter has a flexible structure, and extra stages could be added to it in order to achieve even higher voltage gains without increasing the voltage stress on devices or limiting the duty cycle. The operation principle of the converter and related relationships and waveforms are presented in the paper. Also, a comprehensive comparison between the proposed and other QZS based dc–dc converters is provided which confirms the superiority of the proposed converter. Most of the two-stage converters for electric bike battery charging comprise of a boost converter for power factor correction (PFC) followed by a dc–dc converter with universal input voltage. These two-stage conversions suffer from poor efficiency and increased component count. In this paper, a single-stage switched inductor Cuk converter based PFC converter is proposed, which offers high step-down gain, low current stress, high efficiency, and reduced component count. The operational analysis and design equations for various components of the proposed converter are carried out in continuous current mode. This paper presents mathematical modeling, analysis, simulation, and experimentation on the proposed converter rated for 500 W, 48 V/10.4 A. The performance investigation of the proposed converter with respect to power quality indices like voltage total harmonic distortion (THD), current THD, and total power factor is carried out with various types of loads such as resistive load and battery load in both constant voltage (CV) and constant current (CC) mode. Furthermore, the dynamic performance of the proposed converter with battery charging is investigated in CV mode and CC mode with respect to the wide range of supply variations. This paper proposes a new single-phase single-stage switched-boost inverter with four switches. Like the quasi-Z-source inverter and quasi-switched boost inverter (qSBI), the proposed inverter has the main features as continuous input current, buck/boost voltage with single-stage conversion, and shoot-through immunity. Compared to the qSBI, the proposed inverter uses one more capacitor and one less switch. This paper presents the operating principles, pulse-width modulation control strategy, parameter design guidelines, and simulation results for the proposed inverter. To verify the performance of the proposed inverter, an 800-W prototype was built with an 110 V/50 Hz output voltage in stand-alone and grid-connected modes. In this article, a high-power-density off-line light-emitting diode (LED) driver is proposed. The proposed ac–dc driver is the novel integrated buck and boost converter (IBBC). Besides the high-power-density, the converter shows a high power factor (PF), and a low total harmonic distortion (THD). The IBBC is a two-stage driver that features just one controlled switch, which leads to high PF and low THD operation ensuring high efficiency, and size and cost reduction. Moreover, the switch current is minimized as it conducts the higher of the buck or boost converter, but not the addition of both as in other integrated converters. Moreover, for a further increase of the power-density, a magnetic integration is made by integrating the two inductors of both the buck and boost converters in one core. Thus, the proposed converter has been named as fully integrated buck and boost converter (FIBBC). In this paper, the IBBC is analyzed, and a design methodology is proposed. Also, this article presents a magnetic analysis of the novel FIBBC. In addition, a comparison between two prototypes is presented, one for the IBBC and another for the FIBBC, both of them supplying an LED luminaire of 46 V/ 0.575 A. The FIBBC shows a high PF equal to 0.994, very small THD of 10%, output current ripple of 6%, and efficiency of 92.62%, which represents a landmark on the efficiency of integrated converters. This paper introduces a non-isolated high step-up dc–dc converter with dual coupled inductors suitable for distributed generation applications. By implementing an input parallel connection, the proposed dc–dc structure inherits shared input current with low ripple, which also requires small capacitive filter at its input. Moreover, this topology can reach high voltage gain by using dual coupled inductors in series connection at the output stage. The proposed converter uses active clamp circuits with a shared clamp capacitor for the main switches. In addition to the active clamp circuit, the leakage energy is recycled to the output by using an integrated regenerative snubber. Indeed, these circuits allow soft-switching conditions, i.e., zero voltage switching and zero current switching for active and passive switching devices, respectively. The mentioned features along with a common ground connection of the input and output make the proposed topology a proper candidate for transformer-less grid-connected photovoltaic systems. In this paper, a new structure of nonisolated boost dc–dc converters based on voltage-lift technique is proposed. In comparison with conventional nonisolated boost dc–dc converters, the proposed converter generates higher voltage gain. This paper proposes a single-phase power factor correction (PFC) rectifier to achieve high power factor, wide output voltage range, and ripple power decoupling without using electrolytic capacitors. It consists of two parts: PFC circuit and output voltage regulation circuit. The load side is involved in both parts, which is different from the regular two-stage conversion structure. The proposed rectifier can be directly applied to low voltage cases due to the wide output voltage range. And the decoupling capacitor voltage can be smaller than the peak grid voltage, which reduces the voltage stress. A switched-capacitor-based dual-switch dc–dc converter with a high-boost voltage gain is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter can obtain a high-voltage gain with a small duty cycle, which decreases the voltage stress and the conduction loss on the power switches. This paper presents the key waveforms, the operating principles at the continuous conduction mode and the discontinuous conduction mode, and the parameter design. Moreover, a comparison between the proposed converter and other nonisolated converters has been completed. This paper presents a hybrid nonisolated dc–dc commutation cell, which is generated by the integration between conventional commutation cell and ladder-type passive switched capacitor (SC) cell. From the resulted hybrid cell are derived three different dc–dc converters: a buck-type, a boost-type, and a buck–boost-type. The three structures are analyzed in this paper and are presented the topological stages, static gain characteristics in continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode, steady-state analysis. The analyses are generalized in relation to the number of switched-capacitor cells employed, which allows the increase of the rated gain of the converters by adding more SC cells. In addition, the proposed hybrid nonisolated dc–dc commutation divides naturally the voltage stress among the semiconductors and capacitors of the power stage. A 1-kW prototype was developed to verify the operation of the three proposed converters and their theoretical analysis. For the buck-type topology, designed with an input voltage of 600 V and output voltage of 450 V, a peak efficiency of 99.2% and efficiency at rated power of 99% were obtained. Sheppard–Taylor power factor correction (ST-PFC) rectifier could obtain a high power factor due to its capability of overcoming the control detuning issue. However, it needs a bulky electrolytic capacitor at the load side to buffer the double-frequency ripple power (DFRP), which reduces the reliability and power density significantly. This paper proposes a control method to divert the DFRP to the small energy transfer capacitor. Consequently, the bulky electrolytic capacitor is replaced with a small film capacitor. The proposed method is carried out by introducing the freewheel state (one switch is turned on and the other is turned off) into the control. So no extra hardware is added, which makes the proposed method cost-effective. A low electromagnetic interference emission is also achieved due to the continuous input–output currents. In addition, the proposed method can be extended to other topologies easily. This paper first gives the detailed analysis of the proposed control method, and then introduces the controller design. These days, constant on-time current mode (COTCM) control scheme is widely used in the voltage regulator (VR) controllers because it has a higher light-load efficiency and a higher BW design capability while maintaining a simpler compensation requirement. One issue plaguing the COTCM control is its slow transient response which is caused by its fixed TON operation. During the heavy-load step-up transient, the duty cycle becomes saturated and the inductor current increment becomes limited by TON and the minimum off time (TOFF$\_$ MIN) ratio, which can create a large undershoot at load step up. On the other hand, in the load step-down case, if the load step down occurs at the beginning of TON, a large overshoot can be created at the output. To solve this issue, this paper presents a method designed to increase the TON at load step up and then very quickly, decrease at load step down in order to reduce the undershoot and overshoot at output or otherwise save the output capacitor. In this proposed method, the increase or decrease of T ON is proportional to the output change which eliminates the chance of any overcorrection or ring-back problem unlike the methods presented in prior forums. This feature enables the control to work seamlessly in a high-frequency load repetitive case in VR applications. Since this TON change occurs only in the transient period when duty cycle is saturated, it does not affect the small-signal property of the COT control. Moreover, the proposed methods are very much compatible with the state-of-the-art single and multiphase COT control structures. A novel soft-switching interleaved coupled-inductor boost converter is proposed in this paper. Only a single active soft-switching module is needed to simultaneously achieve the soft-switching property of the two switches in the interleaved coupled-inductor boost converter. The better efficiency is achieved with the less components and cost. The two main switches can achieve the ZVT turn-on and smaller-current turn-off simultaneously when the single active soft-switching module is active. Due to the coupling characteristic of the inductors, the voltages across the two inductors are changed at the same time; therefore, the equivalent circuit is equal to the parasitic capacitors of the two main switches in parallel to resonate with the auxiliary inductor. By coupling two input inductors, the volume and cost of the circuit can be reduced. The interleaved coupled-inductor topology can also reduce the input and output current ripples and share the input and output currents. DC electric springs (DCES) are emerging technologies for the (i) regulation of mains voltage against the intermittent renewable generations and (ii) harmonic cancellation in dc microgrids. When conventional converter topologies (e.g., half-bridge or full-bridge converter) are adopted as DCES, the battery storage of the DCES has to process both the dc power and the ac harmonic power. The pulsating ac power can severely reduce the lifetime of the battery. To address this issue, a hybrid-DCES (H-DCES) is proposed in this paper to perform (i) and (ii) in a decoupled manner. With a modified topology and control method, the H-DCES can divert the ac current to the ground and retains the function of manipulating noncritical load for dc voltage regulation. The immediate benefits of this H-DCES are the reduction of storage capacity and a prolonged lifetime of the battery. Both the operating principle and the mathematical model of the proposed H-DCES are analyzed in this paper. A prototype of the H-DCES is practically tested in a 48-V dc grid. The experimental results show that the H-DCES can realize the decoupled operation of dc voltage regulation and harmonic cancellation. An extended-duty-ratio (EDR) boost converter is studied extensively in this paper for high voltage gain applications with a wide input (and/or output) voltage range. The EDR is a unique combination of an interleaved, multiphase boost converter and switched capacitor configuration that achieves high voltage gain with significantly lower switch voltage stress and switching losses compared to conventional high-gain solutions. Most of the switches in the multiphase EDR experience only a fixed fraction of the output voltage ($1/M, 2/M$ , etc., where $M$ is the number of phases). Through extensive analysis over a wide operating range, it is shown here that the EDR boost converter has inherent current sharing among the phases only in a limited range of duty ratio— $(M-1)/M \leq D \leq 1$. As the duty ratio reduces beyond this range as required in wide input voltage applications, inherent current sharing property is lost. In this paper, techniques to ensure current sharing under all operating zones without requiring current sensors are presented. Instead of having equal duty ratio for each phase, it is adjusted for each phase according to the operating region of the converter. Extensive analysis is presented to derive the required duty ratio changes for the different phases. Conventional single-phase power-factor-correction (PFC) rectifiers with active power decoupling capability typically require more than three active switches in their circuits. By exploring the concept of power-buffer cell, a new single-stage PFC rectifier with two active switches, one inductor and one small power-buffering capacitor is reported in this paper. The proposed converter can achieve high-power factor, wide output voltage range, and power decoupling function without using electrolytic capacitor. Additionally, an automatic power decoupling control scheme that is simple and easy to implement is proposed in this paper. The operating principle, control method, and design considerations of the proposed rectifier are also provided. A 100-W prototype with ac input voltage of 110 Vrms and a regulated dc output voltage ranging from 30 to 100 V has been successfully designed and practically tested. The experimental results show that with only a 15 μF power-buffering film capacitor, the proposed converter can achieve an input power factor of over 0.98, peak efficiency of 93.9%, and output voltage ripple of less than 3%, at 100-W output power. A new static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) based on the diode-clamped modular multilevel converter (DCM2 C) is proposed in this paper. In this converter topology, the capacitor voltage is clamped by using a low power rating diode in each submodule. The quantity of voltage sensors is significantly reduced and is free from the number of voltage levels. Furthermore, the voltage balancing control method becomes very simple and the capacitor voltage balance speed is fast. Based on the structure of modular multilevel converter, the DCM2C-STATCOM has the capability of Var compensation and negative-sequence current compensation. The topology characteristics and compensation control method of DCM2C-STATCOM are investigated in this paper. Experimental results obtained from a laboratory prototype validate that the capacitor voltage of the proposed DCM2C-STATCOM can be well balanced and the Var and negative-sequence current compensations are effective. Renewable energy generations have been attracting sustained attentions in academic and industry. Current-fed-isolated-bidirectional dc/dc converters (CF-IBDCs) are widely adopted in low-voltage high-current applications such as solar photovoltaic fuel cell with energy storage. This paper gives an overview and a comprehensive comparative evaluation of CF-IBDCs. The active clamped, dual half-bridge, L-L type dual active bridge, resonant-type, naturally clamped, and other type topologies of CF-IBDCs are investigated, analyzed, and compared regarding their circuit topological structures, operation characteristics, modulation methods, and soft-switching technologies. In addition, component cost models and loss models of converters are deduced and presented. On this basis, quantitative and comprehensive performance comparison of seven typical CF-IBDC topologies selected from each type is conducted in terms of costs, losses, weight, volume, and power density for the given system specifications and design constraints. In this paper, a novel topology combining reconfigurability and hybridization is presented. Reconfigurability allows the proposed converter to operate in three different operating modes, yielding a wide range of step-up conversion ratios. The combination of two charge-pump cells and an inductor allows to reduce the average inductor current if compared to a standard equivalent boost converter. A prototype with integrated MOS, drivers, and logic but external passives was built. Experimental results show that with $\mathbf {f_{s} }=\text{300}\,$ kHz, $\mathbf {V_{in} = \text{6}}\,$ V, and $\mathbf {I_o = \text{70}}\,$ mA, the converter can cover conversion ratios in the range from $\text {2.5}$ to $\text {10}$ , with a maximum output voltage equal to $\text {60}\,$ V. In this paper, a family of new step-up series–parallel dual resonant switched-capacitor converters (SP-DRSCs) is proposed to extend the conversion ratio for high step-up applications. The converters feature a wide gain range, continuously adjustable, and enhanced light-load voltage regulation. All flying capacitors operate in resonance, eliminating high transient current spikes and charge sharing losses. Thus, zero-current-switching (ZCS) turn-on for all transistors and ZCS turn-off for all diodes are achieved. A comprehensive analysis of the operation principle, voltage-gain curves, stable regulation range, and voltage and current stress is given. An analytical method to quantify the passive component volume for the group of step-up dual resonance switched-capacitor converters is presented. This paper presents a new single-phase ac–dc–ac three-level three-leg converter composed of three coupled-inductors and six active switches. The system model, operation principles, and a control strategy are presented and discussed. Additionally, a space-vector pulsewidth modulation technique is developed to double the effective frequency of the grid and load voltages and to reduce the switching losses. The proposed converter is compared to other similar converters in terms of switch count, harmonic distortion, and power losses. The results show that the proposed topology has improved power quality and uses fewer switches and gate drive circuits. These characteristics can potentially reduce the costs and the complexity of the system. In addition, the proposed converter eliminates the requirement for dead time to prevent short circuit of the dc-link. This paper presents a pulsed power modulator with a new structure that utilizes the reverse recovery characteristics of diodes to achieve an effective pull-down circuit configuration. The proposed configuration for active pull-down applicable to negative pulsed power applications with a high-voltage direct switching method is implemented by adding a diode to the pulse discharging path of the modulator, instead of using a pull-down resistor. The diode is forward-biased while an output pulse voltage is applied to the load. When the pulse voltage applied to the load is removed, the residual energy in the load is quickly discharged through the reverse recovery path of the diode so that the pull-down function of the pulsed power supply system is efficiently performed. The operating principle of the proposed system is described, and each operating mode is analyzed in detail. In addition, the feasibility of the proposed system configuration is examined through various simulation results. Finally, it is proven that the proposed system can be used effectively in pulsed power application fields through a practical experiment in plasma source ion implantation applications. The Cuk dual resonance core (DRC) realizes overlapped dual resonance to regulate its output voltage. However, the DRC configuration was only applied to the Fibonacci switched-capacitor converter (SCC), series–parallel SCC, and voltage doubler. In this paper, the Cuk DRC is modified and then is extended to the Dickson SCC to form a multi-resonance-core-based (MRC) Dickson resonant switched-capacitor converter. All charging and discharging loops achieve soft charging, and so the inherent capacitor charge sharing loss and the high current transient spikes are eliminated. The modular configuration makes the MRC Dickson easy to be extended to a higher voltage level. The on-time fixed frequency modulation is adopted, all transistors being turned on with zero-current-switching (ZCS) operation and all diodes being turned off with ZCS operation. Most importantly, the conversion ratio of the MRC Dickson can be regulated continuously, widely, and efficiently even at light load condition, which is a huge advantage over the traditional Dickson SCC with limited control headroom. A comprehensive analysis of the operation principle, voltage-gain curve, component stress analysis, and output characteristic is provided. Load-independent output characteristics of inductive power transfer (IPT) systems are increasingly popular in battery charging. This paper proposes a novel variable-parameter T-circuit (VT) for an IPT system charging a battery with constant current (CC) or constant voltage (CV) output. The VT can transfer a CC/CV input to a CC or CV output by using an ac switch and a passive component (inductor or capacitor). An IPT system with a VT for CC–CV charging can reduce the number of passive components and ac switches. Besides, the proposed VT merits more design freedom of charge current/voltage with the constraints imposed by the loosely coupled transformer parameters compared to that of the traditional one. In addition, there are three kinds of VTs for various IPT charging systems with different requirements. A 400 W laboratory-scale prototype with a 150 mm air gap was built to verify the theoretical analyses. Both electronic load and lead-acid battery are utilized to verify the charging profile of the proposed method. The experimental results of the IPT system indicate that the fluctuation of the charging current in CC mode is less than 2%, and the change rate of charging voltage in CV mode is within 2.9%. This paper proposes the design of gray wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm-based fractional order proportional integral (FOPI) controller for power factor correction (PFC) using interleaved dc–dc single ended primary inductance converter converter with improved performance characteristics such as speed, accuracy, and stability. The detailed analysis and modeling of the proposed converter are presented. The optimal parameters of FOPI controller are obtained using GWO algorithm to improve the speed of response of the system. FOPI controller provides better performance in terms of robustness and stability since it has one more adjustable parameter than the conventional proportional integral (PI) controller. The cascade control strategy is implemented for the proposed converter with GWO-based FOPI controller as inner current and outer voltage controllers for PFC and load voltage regulation. The performance characteristics of the proposed system are analyzed and compared with conventional and other optimization techniques using MATLAB/Simulink software. A prototype of the proposed converter controlled by TMS320C2000 microcontroller for an output power of 200 W is tested and validated with the simulation results. Analysis and design of a single-switch high step-up coupled-inductor boost converter are presented in this paper. With the aid of the coupled inductor, the proposed converter can achieve high-voltage gain without extreme duty cycle. Also, low switch voltage stress can be achieved, thus low-voltage-rating mosfet is allowed to lower the conduction loss. Moreover, the proposed converter features continuous input current, which is desirable and friendly to the battery, fuel cell, and photovoltaic applications. This paper presents a self-adapting synchronized-switch harvesting (SA-SSH) interface circuit to extract energy from vibration-based piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs). The implemented circuit utilizes a novel switching technique to recycle optimum amount of harvested charge on piezoelectric capacitance to strengthen the damping force, and simultaneously achieve load-independent energy extraction with a single inductor. Charge recycling is realized by adjusting extraction time, and optimized through a maximum power point tracker based on charge-flipping dissipation. The circuit has been implemented using 180 nm HV CMOS technology with 0.9 × 0.6 mm2 active area. Self-adapting SSH circuit has been validated with both macro-scaled and MEMS PEHs with different inductor values. The interface circuit provides maximum energy extraction for the full storage voltage range of 1.8–3.7 V. The implementation harnesses have 500% more power compared to an ideal full-bridge rectifier, and output 3.4 μW for 2.24 V peak-to-peak open-circuit piezoelectric voltage from MEMS PEH excited at its resonant frequency. Photovoltaic (PV) systems having rechargeable batteries are prone to be complex and costly because multiple converters are necessary to individually regulate a load, PV panel, and battery. This paper proposes novel nonisolated multiport converters (MPCs) integrating a bidirectional pulsewidth modulation (PWM) converter and phase-shift-switched capacitor converter (PS-SCC) for standalone PV systems. A PWM converter and PS-SCC are integrated by reducing the total switch count, realizing the simplified system and circuit. In the proposed MPCs, two control freedoms of duty cycle and phase shift angle are manipulated to individually regulate the load, PV panel, and/or battery. The detailed operation analysis was performed to mathematically derive gain characteristics and zero voltage switching operation boundaries. For the battery discharging mode, in which the PV panel is not available and the MPC behaves as a single-input–single-output converter with two control freedoms available, the optimized control scheme achieving the lowest rms current is also proposed to maximize power conversion efficiencies. Various kinds of experimental verification tests using a 200-W prototype were performed to verify the theoretical analysis and to demonstrate the performance of the proposed MPC. Boost-based converters are used in a variety of non-isolated step-up applications, such as power factor correctors, because of their simplicity. The power density of these converters can be increased in higher switching frequencies, which reduces the size of the magnetic elements. This increases the switching losses, but that can be solved by soft-switching techniques. This paper proposes a resonant bridgeless power factor correction converter that provides soft switching for all of the semiconductors. The proposed structure can provide zero voltage switching for the switches and zero current switching for the diodes. In the proposed structure, the input current is inherently sinusoidal with low total harmonic distortion, even with small inductances. Therefore, a high input power factor is achieved without requiring a current control loop in the circuit. This reduces the complexity of the control circuit. An experimental prototype has been constructed to investigate the validity of the claims. In this paper, a new low-voltage ringing zero voltage transition (ZVT) cell is proposed for a family of non-isolated dc–dc converters. In the proposed converter, all semiconductor devices operate under soft-switching condition at both turning on and off. The proposed ZVT cell resolves the issues appeared in the previous works: no online calculation required to achieve ZVS turn-on of the main switch; no extra voltage stress imposed on the main or snubber components; no floating gate driver required for the main and snubber switches; low component count of the ZVT cell; operation principles and design guideline of the boost converter with the proposed ZVT cell are presented. Also, three different positions of a snubber diode considering its junction capacitor are analyzed to clarify the advantage of the proposed ZVT cell. A 2-kW laboratory prototype of the boost converter with the proposed ZVT cell operating at 100 kHz is built and tested to verify the theoretical analysis. This paper presents a new bridgeless buck–boost power factor corrector with the use of the active virtual ground technique, which is named as the Manitoba Rectifier. The proposed topology can convert the grid ac voltage into a wide range of voltage outputs within a single-stage circuit. It is in a bridgeless structure and simple in design. During the operation, an LC filter is generated at the system input, where continuous grid current is guaranteed in a buck–boost characteristic topology. In addition, the filter capacitor helps to clamp the voltage ripple between the grid and the output bus terminal. Both leakage current and common mode noise are kept in a relatively small value. Thus, a single-stage and low common-mode buck–boost converter system is built. The proposed topology is successfully implemented on an 800 W prototype, and the performance is experimentally verified, which shows good agreement with the theoretical findings. The three-level full-bridge (TLFB) dc−dc converter has been widely used in high-voltage, high-power applications. In the experimental test, the neutral-point voltage deviation appears; moreover, it has also been found out that if the flying capacitors are introduced, the input capacitor voltages could realize self-balance even if no active balancing solutions are adopted. In the previous publications, the role of flying capacitors is generally considered to extend the range of soft switching; however, the self-balance ability has not been mentioned or investigated in any publications thus far. In order to fill this gap, this paper provides the detailed mode operation analysis of the TLFB converter and reveals the cause of the imbalance. In addition, the mechanism of the self-balance ability provided by the flying capacitors is explained in detail, which gives a deep insight into the converter. At last, the influence factor of the voltage error in steady state has been analyzed, and the specific expression of the voltage error is also derived. A novel PWM full bridge (FB) dc–dc converter for large power industrial applications is proposed in this paper. The soft switching mode of the primary switches can be varied under different input and output conditions to achieve optimum system efficiency. In the zero-voltage and zero-current switching (ZVZCS) mode, the turn-on and turn-off switching loss can be optimized because the soft switching conditions of the turn-on and turn-off instants are well decoupled. In the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) mode, the turn-off switching loss can also be optimized because there is no requirement for light load operation in this mode. Four mosfets with ultra-low on-state resistance are used, thus, the added conduction loss is small. The auxiliary mosfets with high switching frequency are turned on with zero-current and off with zero-voltage, hence, the added switching loss can also be neglected. Furthermore, some drawbacks of the conventional ZVS and ZVZCS converters, e.g., narrow ZVS load range, high primary circulating current, incomplete reset of the primary current, and unreasonable VA rating of the added components, have been well solved. This paper proposes a high-step-down dc–dc converter with continuous output current which utilizes coupled-inductors. Another main feature of this converter is applying the same number of switches as the synchronous buck converter. The introduced converter is suitable for non-isolated low-voltage high-current applications, especially voltage regulator modules (VRMs) with 12-V-input. Owing to extension of the duty cycle, the main mosfet current stress and the synchronous rectifier switch voltage stress are significantly reduced. However, the discharge of the leakage inductance energy increases the main mosfet voltage stress. By employing a simple lossless clamp/snubber circuit the leakage inductance energy is recovered, the voltage spike across the main mosfet is clamped, and the turn-off switching losses are reduced. There is at least one inductor in all current paths which creates an intrinsic protection against current shoot-through and provides zero-current-switching (ZCS) turn-on for the main mosfet. High efficiency is attained by the proposed converter due to extended duty cycle, low number of switches, and soft switching operation while the converter driver is just like the conventional buck converter. Due to the single-phase structure of the proposed converter, this converter is a viable alternative to the buck VRM. Similar to the other converters using coupled-inductors, the complexity of coupled-inductors design and the space occupied by coupled-inductors can be considered as drawbacks. This paper describes a theory to synthesize nonisolated dc–dc converters. It uses the fundamental flux balance equation across the inductors of a converter as a starting point in this synthesis process. The flux balance equations are the linear equations of the input voltage, capacitor voltages, and duty cycle (D). The coefficients of these linear equations can be selected from a finite set of choices. These choices define the converter topologies that are subsequently used to synthesize a converter. The synthesis procedure applies to a converter of multiple order. All the possible converters are identified for a first-order topology. In the case of second-order converters, all the choices of the flux balance equation are defined. Based on these choices, three new quadratic topologies are derived and verified to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theory. High step-up boost converters with coupled inductor have attracted much attention in the fuel cell or photovoltaic grid-connected generation system, however, there are few literatures elaborated on the construction ideas and derivation methods of them. Accordingly, in order to obtain a clear roadmap on the derivation and inner connection of these converters, a comprehensive review and analysis are presented in this paper. First, the basic boost converter with coupled inductor is regarded as the basic topology, and its merits and demerits are analyzed in detail. Then, in order to address these demerits, various step-up techniques are introduced, such as the rectifier circuit, the active-clamped circuit, the multi-winding coupled inductor, and the voltage doubler rectifier; and numerous new topologies are continuously proposed by combinations and equivalent simplifications. In addition to a detailed synthesis of each topology, a comparative and quantitative analysis among some important converters is presented, and the optimal one is chosen to build a 250 W prototype. Finally, based on comparisons and analysis, the main characteristics and inner connections of these high step-up boost converters with coupled inductor are identified and clarified. In this paper, an integrated step-up inverter without transformer is investigated for photovoltaic (PV) power generation. The proposed topology can be derived by combining a traditional boost converter with a single-phase full bridge dc–ac converter. The main features of the integrated inverter are: First, the leakage current caused by the solar cell array-to-ground parasitic capacitance can be theoretically reduced to zero due to the characteristics of the converter configuration, which can improve the efficiency and the reliability of the PV generation system; second, the output ac voltage of the proposed inverter can be higher than the input dc voltage, which is capable of connecting low voltage PV panels to the grid; third, only five active switches are used in the presented inverter, and those switching devices can be synchronously driven by various sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation methods based on the carrier; therefore, the proposed inverter is compact and with curtailed cost. The working principle and analysis of the proposed integrated inverter are elaborated. A novel high step-down dc–dc converter with voltage demultiplier cell is proposed in this paper, which is widely used in the high step-down applications such as electric vehicle and digital circuits. The combination of switched-capacitor and coupled-inductor is employed to build extended voltage demultiplier in the proposed converter, which makes a quite higher voltage conversion ratio than that of the existing counterparts. Thus, the proposed converter can achieve extremely low output voltage with an appropriate duty ratio, and the extreme duty cycle is avoided. Accordingly, voltage stress on power switches is greatly reduced. Then, mosfets with low conduction resistance could be utilized to reduce conduction loss. Importantly, zero-voltage switching could be achieved for the main switch, which promotes the conversion efficiency further. In addition, the coupled inductor operates not only as a filter inductor, but also as a transformer when the main switch is in the off state, which reduces the volume of the magnetic core and improves the power density of the converter. This paper presents a single-stage single-switch soft-switching (S6) power factor correction (PFC) converter to enhance the current shaping performance and reduce the total harmonic distortion. This improvement is achieved by the aid of an auxiliary winding which is used to lower the input current harmonics and also achieve soft-switching condition. As a result, the switching losses are reduced and harmonic content of the input current is improved noticeably in comparison to the conventional S6 PFC converter. Also, the total number of semiconductor elements is reduced in the proposed topology which results in lower cost and higher efficiency.
