This paper describes a flow control of the dye in the paper mill with the quasi-Z-source indirect matrix converter (QZSIMC) fed induction motor drive. More than a decade the voltage-source inverter (VSI) and current-source inverter (CSI) have been used to control the speed of the induction motor, which in turns controls the flow of dye. Recently, the matrix converter (MC) has been an excellent competitor for the VSI or CSI for its compactness. The voltage transfer ratio of the VSI, CSI, and MC has been limited to 0.866. Thus, the efficiency of these converters is less. To improve the voltage transfer ratio the quasi-Z-source network (QZSN) is to be used between voltage source and indirect MC (IMC). The modification in the shoot-through duty ratio of the QZSN varies the voltage transfer ratio greater than 0.866. Different voltage transfer ratios are needed for different voltage sag conditions. For a variation of the duty ratio of the QZSN, the fuzzy logic controller has been presented. To control the IMC vector control with space vector modulation has been presented. This paper proposes the implementation of QZSIMC adjustable speed drive for the flow control of dye in paper mill during different voltage sag conditions. A 4-kW prototype has been built and the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified with simulation results and experimental setup. Simulation is done in MATLAB, Simulink platform. Experimental setup is done with the aid of a TMS320F2812 (Texas Instrument) processor. The experimental results validate the maintenance of the speed of an induction motor at the set condition, thus controlling the perfect flow of dye in paper manufacturing technology. The series bridge converter (SBC) is a modular multilevel converter (MMC) recently developed to enhance power density in high-voltage high-power applications. The MMC is a well-established solution, widely researched, and exploited in practical HVdc connections, thanks to its high power quality and high efficiency. However, the main limitation of the MMC is the relatively large energy storage, also due to the fact that power ripples in the submodule capacitors include a component at the fundamental ac frequency. As a result, volume becomes critical in applications such as offshore or city center in-feeds, where space is restricted and expensive. The SBC offers a more compact footprint by exploiting a series connection on the dc side and by operating the submodules with rectified waveforms, thus moving the minimum component of the instantaneous power to twice the ac fundamental and reducing capacitors size. The drawback of the converter is a more complex energy control compared to the MMC. This paper proposes the first experimental validation of the SBC, using a 2-kW laboratory-scale prototype. The main technical challenge of the medium-voltage motor drives with modular multilevel converter (MMC) is the serious low-frequency fluctuation on the capacitor voltages, and the existing suppression methods inevitably inject high-frequency circulating currents in MMC. However, the output currents are evidently distorted by the large injected components, while little research has been done to study and solve this problem. This paper analyzes and proves the essential interactions between the output current distortion and the injected components, and the specific dominant output harmonic groups are derived and summarized, revealing the nature of the problem, and it can be taken as a favorable reference for the controller designing. Based on the derivations, this paper proposes a novel suppression method for the greatly improved harmonic characteristics of the output currents during the low-frequency operation. The output harmonics can be accurately measured by the proposed control and effectively suppressed for much lower current total harmonic distortion, benefiting for the superior output control performances with improved efficiency. The simulation results on PSCAD/EMTDC and experimental verifications on a 2.2 kW MMC-based motor drive prototype prove the validity of the presented harmonic analysis and suppression method. The emergence of applications which require high-voltage switches has created a tendency to use semiconductor device series stacks. These series stacks permit operation at blocking voltages above semiconductor elements’ nominal voltage. Insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) are currently utilized for controllability and switching speed, when these topologies are employed. The main challenge therewith is guaranteeing voltage balance between IGBTs, both when blocked and when switching transistors. Most of the methods which have been proposed to mitigate static and dynamic voltage unbalances increase transistor losses. The series stack loss-less high voltage switch (LHVS) which mitigates voltage unbalances, thus reducing switching losses, is presented in this paper. LHVS consists of a circuit, which ensures soft IGBT switching, an energy recovery circuit, and a gate delay compensation circuit. Additionally, the insulation voltage level is guaranteed to be equal between control circuit and high-voltage side of each IGBT. The operating principle of the LHVS is detailed in this paper, as is experimental validation which has been performed for three series stack modules. Static unbalances are reduced to 1%, while the differences between collector–emitter voltage curves in switching “on” do not surpass 8 ns, and switching losses are reduced by 41%, as compared to the hard-switching topology. This paper presents a novel seven-level inverter topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. It consists of eight active switches and two inner flying capacitor (FC) units forming a similar structure as in a conventional active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter. This unique arrangement reduces the number of active and passive components. A simple modulation technique reduces cost and complexity in the control system design without compromising reactive power capability. In addition, compared to major conventional seven-level inverter topologies, such as the neutral point clamped, FC, cascaded H-bridge, and ANPC topologies, the new topology reduces the dc-link voltage requirement by 50%. This recued dc-link voltage makes the new topology appealing for various industrial applications. Experimental results from a 2.2-kVA prototype are presented to support the theoretical analysis presented in this paper. This paper presents bidirectional grid-connected modular multilevel converters (MMC) with direct digital control and division-summation processes to achieve power-injection and rectification functions. A direct digital control is developed to track current references, regulate dc-bus voltage and cell voltage, and balance the upper and lower dc-bus voltages. It can accommodate wide filter-inductance variation and take care of source voltage harmonics to achieve tight current tracking and low distortion output current. Based on the power-balance principle, the commands of arm currents can be determined directly. In this paper, the MMC configuration is introduced first, and then the control laws for current tracking and voltage regulation are derived in detail. With the increasing proliferation of variable speed drive, the demand for the more reliable drive is also on the rise. Despite the growing interest on more advanced motors like permanent magnet and flux switching motors, three-phase induction motors (3ph-IMs) are still the main workhorse in the industry and hence the fault-tolerant control of these motor drives remains an interesting and important topic. In this paper, a simple fault-tolerant field-oriented control technique for 3ph-IMs is presented. It is shown that by injecting zero-sequence compensation voltage in a feedforward manner, open-circuit faults can be effectively tolerated. Compared to the previous feedforward fault-tolerant control methods, the proposed approach does not require the knowledge of the magnetizing inductance, which is tricky to be obtained in induction motors. Furthermore, the unified feedforward approach allows the same control structure to be used for different fault-tolerant 3ph-IMs drive topologies, with minor modifications to the feedforward terms. In addition, the effect of inverter non-idealities on the performance of the proposed control method is also highlighted and addressed. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified using MATLAB simulation and further validated using experimental tests. This paper describes a dc-link voltage control method of a single-phase back-to-back cascaded H-bridge inverter (SBCI) for a medium-voltage motor drive system. The main advantage of the SBCI topology over the conventional regenerative cascaded H-bridge topology with a three-phase active front-end (AFE) is a simple system structure, which is composed of an input transformer, a power cell, a current sensor, etc. However, the challenging points of the SBCI are larger voltage ripple in the dc-link capacitor and imbalance of dc-link voltages of each phase. The asymmetric dc-link voltage of each power cells could cause unstable operation such as over-modulation due to the lack of the dc-link voltage of a particular phase and result in over-voltage or under-voltage faults. In this paper, the control strategy of the dc-link voltage for the SBCI that uses the negative-sequence voltage of the converter is described. The proposed control method is verified with a computer simulation whose target is a 6.6-kV–1.25-MW medium-voltage drive system. Also, through the experimental setup with the prototype SBCI whose power rating is 16.2 kVA, the dc-link voltage of each AFE has been controlled within a 0.5% error of its reference value at the full load. The photovoltaic (PV) output voltage varies over a wide range depending on operating conditions. Thus, the PV-connected converters should be capable of handling a wide input voltage range while maintaining high efficiencies. This paper proposes a new series resonant dc–dc converter for PV microinverter applications. Compared with the conventional series resonant converter, a dual-mode rectifier is configured on the secondary side, which enables a twofold voltage gain range for the proposed converter with a fixed-frequency phase-shift modulation scheme. The zero-voltage switching turn-on and zero-current switching turn-off can be achieved for active switches and diodes, thereby, minimizing the switching losses. Moreover, a variable dc-link voltage control scheme is introduced to the proposed converter, leading to a further efficiency improvement and input-voltage-range extension. The operation principle and essential characteristics (e.g., voltage gain, soft-switching, and root-mean-square current) of the proposed converter are detailed in this paper, and the power loss modeling and design optimization of components are also presented. A modular multilevel converter (MMC) is regarded as a promising topology in high-voltage direct current systems. However, the MMC consists of numerous submodules (SMs) and switching devices, which lead to a considerable switching loss, and increased cost and size of the heat sink. To mitigate these issues, this paper presents a novel modulation method composed of fundamental frequency modulation (FFM) and multicarrier-based sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation schemes. The main purpose of this modulation method is the reduction of switching loss while maintaining good harmonic performance. However, the FFM scheme leads to the unbalanced capacitor voltage of each SM in the MMC. Accordingly, this paper additionally proposes the rotation method and selective voltage balancing control for SMs to ensure effective performance of the method. Nonregenerative pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) rectifiers are increasingly being considered for applications, where the power flow is unidirectional, such as power supplies for telecommunications, X-ray, the machine-side converter for wind energy conversion systems, etc. They use fewer active switches, which increase their power density and reduce cost. This paper proposes a novel reduced switch topology for a multilevel (five-level or higher) nonregenerative PWM rectifier. It uses only four controlled switches and eight diodes per phase for a five-level rectifier. Half of the diodes are naturally commutated (zero current switching) at the line frequency, which reduces switching losses. This topology has several other advantages compared to similar topologies reported in the literature, such as minimum voltage stress across the devices, elimination of transient voltage-balancing snubbers, no extra hardware for balancing the flying capacitors, the dc-link mid-point voltage, etc. In this paper, switching cycle average modeling and the carrier-based modulation strategy for this rectifier are also presented to maintain a balanced dc link and to regulate flying capacitor voltages, while achieving unity displacement factor at the rectifier input terminals. This paper presents the digital implementation of a boundary controller with unipolar switching characteristic for single-phase voltage source full-bridge inverters. This paper expands the application of a second-order switching surface-based control method to unipolar switching of single-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs) using a finite-state machine. The finite-state machine has been formulated considering four different states of the inverter; positive,zero1, negative, andzero2. The second-order boundary control governs the current state of the system and provides proper switching action to keep the system within the desired reference. The control law is implemented digitally in F28m35x digital control card. A full-bridge inverter topology is used to achieve the three-level voltage switching. Various simulations and experiments were performed in a 550 VA, 120 V, 60 Hz VSI with a digitally implemented controller to verify the theoretical predictions. A high-quality voltage output was obtained for various loading conditions. The transient performance of the controller was investigated using a reference and load changes. This paper presents a comprehensive optimization control scheme to improve efficiency and dynamic response of dual-active-bridge (DAB) dc–dc converters. Unified-phase-shift (UPS) control is widely used to increase the efficiency of DAB dc–dc converters by minimizing the peak current, but dynamic performance of the converters needs to be further enhanced. In this paper, to gain superior dynamic performance of DAB dc–dc converters, an equivalent power-balancing (PB) model is employed, which is capable of predicting dynamic behavior of converter output voltages due to input voltage fluctuation and load disturbance. And then, combining the UPS control and the PB control, a comprehensive UPS and PB (UPS-PB) scheme is proposed to improve the efficiency and dynamic performance simultaneously. This work also includes the detailed inductance parameter sensitivity of the proposed UPS-PB scheme and a zonal voltage control strategy to further improve dynamic responses of the output voltage under the start-up process or a large step change of the output voltage reference. Moreover, the variant of UPS-PB scheme for constant power load is analyzed in the experimental part. This paper presents a unified framework for the modeling, analysis, and design of load-independent Class E and Class EF inverters and rectifiers. These circuits are able to maintain zero-voltage switching and, hence, high efficiency for a wide load range without requiring tuning or use of a feedback loop, and to simultaneously achieve a constant amplitude ac voltage or current in inversion and a constant dc output voltage or current in rectification. As switching frequencies are gradually stepping into the megahertz (MHz) region with the use of wide-bandgap (WBG) devices such as GaN and SiC, switching loss, implementing fast control loops, and current sensing become a challenge, which load-independent operation is able to address, thus allowing exploitation of the high-frequency capability of WBG devices. The traditional Class E and EF topologies are first presented, and the conditions for load-independent operation are derived mathematically; then, a thorough analytical characterization of the circuit performance is carried out in terms of voltage and current stresses and the power-output capability. From this, design contours and tables are presented to enable the rapid implementation of these converters given particular power and load requirements. Three different design examples are used to showcase the capability of these converters in typical MHz power conversion applications using the design equations and methods presented in this paper. The design examples are chosen toward enabling efficient and high-power-density MHz converters for wireless power transfer (WPT) applications and dc/dc conversion. Specifically, a 150-W 13.56-MHz Class EF inverter for WPT, a 150-W 10-MHz miniature Class E boost converter, and a lightweight wirelessly powered drone using a 20-W 13.56-MHz Class E synchronous rectifier have been designed and are presented here. This paper proposes generation of a 15-level (14 concentric) dodecagonal voltage space vector structure (DVSVS) for a star connected induction motor drive. The proposed multilevel DVSVS is obtained by cascading two inverters, namely a primary and secondary inverter. The primary inverter is a five-level (5L) structure formed by stacking two three-level flying capacitors with individual reduced dc sources and the secondary inverter is also a 5L structure formed by cascading two capacitor-fed cascaded H-bridges (CHB). The active power is supplied by the primary inverter, while the secondary inverter acts as switched capacitor harmonics filter, and capacitors in the secondary inverter are balanced naturally irrespective of load power factor for entire modulation index. The high-voltage dc supply fed primary inverter is operated in quasi-square wave mode, while the high frequency switching is applied to low voltage CHBs, thus, reducing the overall switching loss. The proposed scheme gives the advantages of both DVSVS and multilevel structure, thus, making it one of the solutions for battery or stacked dc-fed applications. This paper presents a generalized power-decoupling control scheme using a multiport isolated bidirectional converter for a multilevel inverter, which has multiple dc links inside. In the proposed method, a single power-decoupling capacitor is needed for all the dc links in the multilevel inverter cell. First, a prototype of the power-decoupling concept of individual H-bridge cells in the multilevel inverter is proposed, using a separate power-decoupling circuit. Then, a more advanced one-step power-decoupling method is proposed. The lifetime and reliability of the multilevel inverter is improved as film capacitors replace the large capacitance electrolyte capacitors. A multi-input ports/single output voltage-fed dual half-bridge converter (MDHB) is used for the power-decoupling circuit. A steady-state analysis for the peak and root mean square of the MDHB current is carried out for the loss breakdown. The currents are functions of the switching frequency, phase shift, leakage inductance, turn ratio, and output voltage, which make the multiport transformer design complex. A design methodology is proposed, which takes into account the design of the copper and core losses as functions of the switching frequency and number of turns. Furthermore, a special winding method for the input port is illustrated to obtain identical leakage inductances for the uniform current distribution in the multiport transformer. The proposed MDHB employs a current-sensorless power-decoupling control that contributes to the spontaneous ripple rejection of all the dc links without individual link current information, as well as to the cost and size reduction. Hence, the ripple-rejection controller is independent of the control configuration of the multilevel inverter, and also available for universal applications of various inverter topologies. Since the primary-input ports of MDHB share a single magnetic core for interfacing the ripple power to the unified secondary ripple capacitor, the controller design becomes difficult in considering the dynamic interaction among the ports, along with the average-voltage control loop design. In this paper, the dynamic analysis and controller design procedure of the circuit is also presented. The power decoupling is achieved even when the ripple frequency is other than the double frequency of the inverter output, since the single-pole transfer function of the small-signal model of the MDHB allows sufficient phase margin, along with high bandwidth. High-performance cloud computing enables many key future technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), self-driving vehicle, big data analysis, and the Internet of things (IoT), using clustered CPU and GPU servers in the datacenter. To improve the power efficiency and the infrastructure flexibility, the computing industry is adopting 54 VDC to power the servers in the open compute racks. In this paper, a new modeling technique for a soft-switched dc–dc converter is presented and suitable to guide optimal design in different applications, for example, 54 V to point of load (PoL) for the new open compute rack. To improve the model accuracy and reduce the complexity, this paper proposes a reduced-order linear differential equation (LDE) based modeling technique to discover the following: 1) the tank resonance involving the output inductor; 2) the output current ripple and its impact on power efficiency; 3) the proper on-time control for soft switching; 4) the unique bleeding mode under the heavy load; 5) the output power capability of the converter; and 6) component tolerance analysis and impact on the performance of the converter. With the power loss estimation, design guidelines are provided for a reference design and design improvement based on this new modeling technique. Using the proposed method, great accuracy can be expected in the efficiency estimation. To support the development of high-frequency ac microgrids in terms of compact design, high-voltage gain and low total harmonic distortion (THD), a buck–boost dual-leg-integrated step-up inverter is proposed in this paper. The inverter is formed by integrating a buck–boost converter into a conventional single-phase full-bridge inverter by sharing the upper switch and the body diode of the lower switch in both bridge-legs. Consequently, the component count is significantly reduced over the step-up inverter counterparts. In addition, to address the drawbacks of hybrid modulation methods adopted by existing dual-leg-integrated inverters, such as double-variable control, and high THD of output voltage/current at high input voltage and heavy load conditions, unipolar frequency doubling sinusoidal pulse width modulation scheme is adopted in this inverter. As a result, the modulation ratio M becomes the only control variable to regulate the output voltage/current and the control is simplified. The THD of the proposed inverter output can remain low throughout the entire input voltage range and load power range. In order to increase the efficiency of modern microprocessors power supplies used in data centers, the 48-V dc distribution bus is gaining growing attention. For such applications, voltage regulation modules (VRMs) are currently obtained using two-stage conversion systems with an intermediate 12-V dc bus. This paper presents an innovative single-stage approach for the 48-V VRM based on a quasi-resonant constant on-time (COT) operation. The proposed topology inherently integrates the multiphase approach, providing fast phase shedding and flat high-efficiency curves even at light load conditions. This is a unique advantage, usually not available in the two-stage approach, that is very important in server architectures, where high efficiency is required even at light load conditions. The paper analyses the circuit topology, and proposes a control architecture for fast transient response, including the current sharing capabilities, and a solution for implementing the integrated magnetics. The digital controller has been implemented in 0.16-$\mu$ m lithography together with a digital pulse-width-modulation with a 195 ps resolution, and a 40 MS/s, 7-bit ADC. In this paper, a single-phase shared leg converter is proposed along with two generalizations. The basic configuration has three two-level insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) legs and is cascaded on the main power system by means of two injection transformers, such that one of these legs is shared between the transformers. The generalizations are expanded cases in which the converter has N\text{leg} legs. The first generalization is the cascaded shared leg (CSL), where the converter is cascaded by N\text{leg}-1 transformers, and one of the N\text{leg} legs is shared between all transformers. The second is the modular CSL, where Nmod modules, each one similar to the basic configuration, are cascaded by 2Nmod transformers. The conventional configurations considered for general comparisons are the cascaded h-bridge (CHB) and the cascaded half-bridge (CHfB). In this paper, we show that proposed configurations provide multilevel ac voltages with greater levels-per-switch ratio compared to the CHB. We also show that proposed CSL generalization has practically the same levels-per-switch than conventional CHfB and saves one transformer. Due to the development of integrated electronic appliances, independently controlled multiple-output dc–dc converter prototypes have started to emerge in various forms, offering advantages of more compact size and cheaper cost. However, the existing converter topologies are capable of regulating outputs only with the help of auxiliary converter circuits and additional switches. The converter also fails to control all of the outputs independently when the converter has a greater number of output stages than that of the peripheral switching/linear regulators. Therefore, in this paper, a novel dc–dc converter prototype is proposed that can be utilized to construct independently controlled multiple-output converter topology with a single PWM signal driving the primary inverter switches. Feasibility, design challenges, and practical considerations are discussed in this paper with a design example of an independently controlled four-output, 356-W resonant converter system. The asymmetrical half-bridge (AHB) converter has been deeply analyzed as second stage in ac–dc light emitting diode (LED) drivers. Galvanic isolation, high reliability and high efficiency are their main advantages while a limited duty cycle range (i.e., 0–0.5) and a poor dynamic behavior are their main disadvantages. As second stage of an LED driver, the most demanding requirement for its control loop is cancelling the low-frequency ripple introduced by the first stage. According to its limited maximum attainable bandwidth, this is normally achieved by implementing a feedforward loop. Nonetheless, the static gain of the standard AHB converter presents a nonlinear relation between the output voltage and the duty cycle. As a consequence, the effectiveness of this feedforward loop is limited. In this paper, the use of the zeta AHB converter as second stage of an LED driver is analyzed and an optimized design is proposed. Regarding its advantages, it presents an extended duty cycle range (theoretically, 0–1.0). Besides, it presents a linear relation between the output voltage and the duty cycle. Therefore, although its dynamic behavior is still limited, it can perfectly cancel the low-frequency ripple introduced by the first stage of the LED driver by means of a straightforward feedforward loop. The optimized design proposed in this paper is focused on minimizing the losses in the magnetic components (transformer and inductor) by wisely choosing the value of the two turns ratios of the transformer. A switched-capacitor-based dual-switch dc–dc converter with a high-boost voltage gain is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter can obtain a high-voltage gain with a small duty cycle, which decreases the voltage stress and the conduction loss on the power switches. This paper presents the key waveforms, the operating principles at the continuous conduction mode and the discontinuous conduction mode, and the parameter design. Moreover, a comparison between the proposed converter and other nonisolated converters has been completed. This paper proposes a new topology of a hybrid ac/dc microgrid, where there are multiple subgrids connected to the common bus by bidirectional ac/dc converters (BADCs) and bidirectional dc/dc converters (BDDCs) in the system. The rated ac frequencies in different ac subgrids and the rated dc voltages in different dc subgrids can be different for different applications. All the storages in the system are concentrated to form a storage subgrid for convenient management and high efficiency, which maintains the common bus voltage. To ensure the hybrid microgrid operates well, a proper power management method is necessary to control the power flow among multiple subgrids. This paper proposes a decentralized power management method for the hybrid microgrid to make the interacted subgrids operate in coordination and support each other. First, taking the characteristics of the common bus configuration into consideration, a P{\rm{dc}} - v{\rm{dc}}^2 droop control strategy is proposed to maintain the common bus voltage and to realize power sharing among storages in the storage subgrid. Second, as the interaction among multiple subgrids is more complicated compared to the conventional hybrid, a coordinated power control strategy based on the common bus voltage, ac subgrid frequency, and dc subgrid voltage is designed for the BADCs and BDDCs to realize the power interaction among different subgrids. Furthermore, the proposed strategy takes the capacities and load types of each subgrid into consideration; hence, it is still suitable when the capacities of subgrids are mismatched and it can ensure the power quality of the subgrids with high proportion of critical loads. In this paper, ground leakage current suppression in a 60-kW 5-level T-type (5LT2) transformerless SiC photovoltaic (PV) inverter has been presented. The common mode (CM) equivalent circuit is analyzed based on a high frequency (HF) CM loop and a low frequency (LF) CM loop, respectively. In the 5LT2 inverter, the derived HF CM voltage (CMV) is found to have 86% reduction compared to that of a 3-level T-type (3LT2) inverter. The simulation and experiment results are provided to demonstrate the advantages of 5LT2 inverter on HF leakage current suppression. In addition, LF CMV caused by neutral point (NP) voltage oscillation has been analyzed in this paper. It is shown that the LF CMV is nearly proportional to the NP voltage oscillation. Furthermore, an LF CMV compensation method is proposed to suppress the LF CMV by 64%, which is verified by simulation and experiment results. Finally, the leakage current shows 79% reduction in the 5LT2 inverter compared to the conventional 3LT2 inverter in the experiment. In this paper, direct torque control (DTC) of five-phase induction motor (FPIM) is implemented using three-level neutral point clamped (TL-NPC) inverter. One of the advantages of three-level inverter over two-level one for DTC operation is the low torque ripple. Also TL-NPC inverter through space vector modulation technique gives low $ dv/dt$ transition with better voltage waveform. By applying conventional lookup table for DTC, the TL-NPC inverter does not ensures lower $dv/dt$ transition. In this paper, a novel switching scheme for DTC of FPIM using TL-NPC inverter is proposed that ensures the low $ dv/dt$ transition and balancing of dc-link capacitor voltages of TL-NPC inverter. To form the lookup table for DTC operation, instead of using voltage vectors directly, virtual vectors (VVs) are utilized. Two switching states are used in one sample time to generate a VV in $\alpha \beta$ plane, which gives zero resultant voltage in $ xy$ plane. The switching strategy ensures low number of transitions to reduce the switching losses. The switching state redundancies are used in a novel way to balance the dc-link capacitor voltages without using any additional hardware. The proposed technique to balance the dc-link capacitor voltage gives lower switching frequency. A novel control strategy for single-phase current-source inverters connected to an ac grid is proposed in this paper. The control strategy aims to inject maximum power to the grid under transient and steady-state conditions by the tracking of sinusoidal references. This paper presents the modeling and the design of the control strategy based on the exact linearization of the inverter model. Results are obtained by computational simulation and validated experimentally. By using error performance indexes in the analysis of the results, it is demonstrated that the proposed controllers achieve correct tracking of the sinusoidal reference while keeping a low switching frequency, which helps to minimize the commutation losses. This paper presents a hybrid seven-level converter based on T-type converter and H-bridge cascaded suitable for low-voltage and high-power-density applications. The operation principles and conduction paths are analyzed comprehensively. Voltage balance control of the floating capacitors is the key point of this paper. Mathematical expressions of capacitor voltage balance conditions are deduced based on sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). The results show that floating capacitor voltages are only balanced when the modulation index is below 0.82 under SPWM. In order to enlarge the modulation index ensuring the capacitor voltage balance, space vector modulation (SVM) is also applied to regulate floating capacitor voltages taking advantage of redundant switching vectors. Meanwhile, in SVM, there are no additional control requirements for the capacitor voltage. Taken both SPWM and SVM into consideration, the limit to the range of operation for this seven-level converter is presented, which is a function of the modulation index and the power factor. The merit of dc voltage utilization improvement in this topology is also analyzed based on simulation results. An extended-duty-ratio (EDR) boost converter is studied extensively in this paper for high voltage gain applications with a wide input (and/or output) voltage range. The EDR is a unique combination of an interleaved, multiphase boost converter and switched capacitor configuration that achieves high voltage gain with significantly lower switch voltage stress and switching losses compared to conventional high-gain solutions. Most of the switches in the multiphase EDR experience only a fixed fraction of the output voltage ($1/M, 2/M$ , etc., where $M$ is the number of phases). Through extensive analysis over a wide operating range, it is shown here that the EDR boost converter has inherent current sharing among the phases only in a limited range of duty ratio— $(M-1)/M \leq D \leq 1$. As the duty ratio reduces beyond this range as required in wide input voltage applications, inherent current sharing property is lost. In this paper, techniques to ensure current sharing under all operating zones without requiring current sensors are presented. Instead of having equal duty ratio for each phase, it is adjusted for each phase according to the operating region of the converter. Extensive analysis is presented to derive the required duty ratio changes for the different phases. DC/DC converters connected in series or parallel allow low power devices to be used in high power conversions. The input series output series (ISOS) connection is suitable for situations where both the input and output sides are high voltage fields. To ensure that each module shares voltage with the other, this paper proposes an active output voltage sharing (AOVS) control scheme. The scheme introduces sharing control in the output side so that the isolation is not needed between the input and output sides in the control loop. The AOVS control scheme, consisting of a common output voltage loop and individual output voltage sharing loop, has a master–slave structure. To improve the reliability and realize a hot-plug, this paper also provides an automatic master–slave form of the AVOS control scheme. A simulation of the frequency and time domains is used to verify the accuracy of the small signal model, and an ISOS-connected prototype consisting of three forward converters is made to test the steady and dynamic characteristics of the proposed scheme. This paper introduces a novel five-level nested neutral point piloted (NNPP) converter and analyzes the operating principle of five-level NNPP converter. This paper presents a novel space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) algorithm based on gh coordinate for five-level NNPP converter. First, the common-mode voltage is reduced by choosing the appropriate redundant switching states. After that, the floating-capacitor voltage balance control strategy is presented. The appropriate switch combinations of each phase are determined by the control requirements of floating-capacitor voltages respectively and the hardware mapping method of the switching states is presented. Furthermore, the neutral-point voltage balance control strategy is presented. In order to balance the dc-link capacitor voltages, the seven-segment switching sequence is selected according to the control requirements of dc-link capacitor voltages and the neutral-point voltage regulatory factor is introduced to regulate the durations of the redundant switching states in a switching cycle. This paper analyzes three different carrier-based modulation patterns applied to a three-phase high-power-factor-corrected (PFC) five-level buck+boost-type converter acting as an interface between dc distribution systems and an ac grid. The modulation is analyzed employing the space vectors theory so that the achievable performance is demonstrated. The main advantage of the analyzed modulation strategy is its simplicity, which makes it suitable for digital signal controller (DSC) implementations. This seems straightforward for voltage source converters, but is a challenge for current-multilevel converters that typically employ field-programmable gate array devices to achieve better harmonic distortion performance. This is due to modern power electronics DSCs being typically designed for other converter topologies. The power converter is constructed with two phase-shift-modulated six-switch buck-type PFC converters, paralleled by interphase transformers, and an inverting circuit. The system features: bidirectional current carrying capability; relatively low parts count; high utilization of the semiconductors; and low current and voltage ripple at its terminals. The principle of operation, detailed description, analysis of the modulation strategy, and dimensioning equations for three different power circuit realizations are described in this paper assuming the analyzed modulation patterns. An efficient power converter system plays a significant role in the design of battery charging systems for electric vehicles (EVs). In this paper, a new zero-voltage and zero-current switching (ZVZCS) full-bridge dc–dc converter is proposed to reduce the power conversion losses. The proposed converter incorporates a new asymmetrical pulse width modulation (APWM) gating technique for the dc–dc conversion stage in the battery charging system. The proposed dc–dc converter topology achieves zero-voltage switching (ZVS) for all the active switches and near zero-current switching (ZCS) for low-side active switches throughout the charging range of the battery. The proposed APWM technique can reduce the switching and conduction losses compared to the conventional phase-shift modulation (PSM) gating technique. The auxiliary inductance required to ensure ZVS with APWM can also be reduced compared to PSM. Analysis, design, and implementation of the proposed APWM ZVZCS full-bridge dc-dc converter are discussed in this paper. This paper proposes an insulated two-stage ac–dc converter to be applied in unidirectional power flow systems. The two-stage structure is the combination of a Hexverter and a series-type 12 pulse rectifier. The key features of the proposed structure are inherited from the modular multilevel converter concept such as modularity, scalability, and expandability. Besides the topology, this article presents a complete control strategy based on the output (dc) voltage regulation and Hexverter's stored energy. In particular, an unusual method to regulate the Hexverter's branch energy unbalances is proposed. All currents in the Hexverter are controlled which increases the robustness for operation in harsh environments such as subsea systems. This paper introduces the high-frequency link concept into the modular multilevel converter (MMC) topology, which can totally reduce the individual dc-link capacitors at the high-voltage side. A novel nine-level inverter topology for low-voltage applications is proposed in this paper. Each phase of the inverter is composed of a T-type three‐level cell and an active neutral point clamp three‐level cell. The operation principles and current conduction paths are analyzed in detail and phase-disposition sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation is used to balance voltages of flying capacitors and neutral point. The mathematical relationship between the capacitance and the desired ripple in the inverter output is established to select the intermediate capacitance value. A fast output voltage equalization control strategy applied to 10-kV/100-kW high power density photovoltaic dc–dc converter system is proposed in this paper. A single-phase ac–dc converter with dual-output rectifier (DOR) and dual-input dc transformer (DI-DCX) is proposed in this paper. A voltage-split/sigma principle is adopted, that is, the grid voltage is split into two variable dc bus voltages first by the front-stage DOR, and then the two bus voltages are combined into an adjustable output voltage by the downstream DI-DCX. DC output voltage is directly regulated by the front-end rectifier. Therefore, no voltage regulation is required for the dc–dc stage, and a DI-DCX with optimized operation condition is employed to improve the overall efficiency of the ac–dc converter. Moreover, since the DOR has two different output voltages, three-level characteristic is achieved naturally to reduce switching losses of the converter. Zero voltage switching of all the active switches in the DI-DCX is realized as well. A systematic method for developing ultra-wide output voltage range power supply based on modular switched-converter principle is proposed in this paper. The basic symmetric switched-converter (SSC) module is composed of two dc–dc modules, two diodes, and one active switch. Multi-stage SSC modules are generated by symmetric cascaded connection method. By controlling the active switches in multi-stage SSC modules, the connections of all the dc–dc modules’ output ports can be changed flexibly among series, parallel, and partial–parallel–partial-series connections. Then segmented regulation can be realized and system output voltage range can be widely extended. Meanwhile, the voltage range of each dc–dc module can be narrowed and the voltage/current stress can be reduced to simplify the design, increase device utilization ratio, and improve overall efficiency. A full-bridge isolated buck–boost converter with a semiactive rectifier, which features soft-switching and wide voltage adjustment range, is adopted as the dc–dc module to realize the proposed system. The low-frequency fluctuation over the capacitor voltages seriously limits the development of medium-voltage variable-speed drives with a modular multilevel converter (MMC). Therefore, this paper presents an effective strategy of the low-speed and start-up operation for an MMC-based motor drive. The proposed strategy properly coordinates the improved injection and the reduced average capacitor voltage with high applicability. The specific interactions between the control parameters and the system metrics are analyzed to give the detailed steps of the parameters designing. Hence, based on the derivations, the proposed method enables the low-frequency operation under the nominal load torque with decreased injected components and reduced peak capacitor voltages. What is more, two start-up strategies that, respectively, aim at different objectives for the coordinated strategy are proposed, indicating satisfying control performances for the practical applications. The injected common-mode voltage and circulating current in the proposed method are designed to have a great reduction. Thus, the unfavorable risks for the motor are evidently decreased for better stability. The reduced peak current also lessens the high stress on switching devices with desirable reliability. The three-level full-bridge (TLFB) dc−dc converter has been widely used in high-voltage, high-power applications. In the experimental test, the neutral-point voltage deviation appears; moreover, it has also been found out that if the flying capacitors are introduced, the input capacitor voltages could realize self-balance even if no active balancing solutions are adopted. In the previous publications, the role of flying capacitors is generally considered to extend the range of soft switching; however, the self-balance ability has not been mentioned or investigated in any publications thus far. In order to fill this gap, this paper provides the detailed mode operation analysis of the TLFB converter and reveals the cause of the imbalance. In this paper, a family of three-port three-level converters (TPTLC) composed of asymmetrical bidirectional half-bridge modules is proposed, which offers the benefits in terms of a simple control scheme, extended soft switching over a wide range of operating conditions, and reduced voltage stress across switches. The proposed converters take advantage of a pulsewidth modulation plus phase shift control technique to regulate the output voltage as well as to control the power flow between different ports independently. A stacked TPTLC is taken as an example to be introduced in detail to gain a thorough insight into the proposed family of converters. The stacked TPTLC can provide a high voltage gain along with a wide voltage gain range without using any transformer, resulting in the improvement in the power density. In order to minimize the conduction loss and reduce the current stress of switches, the root-mean-square current of the inductor and the boundary condition of the phase-shift controller in different operation scenarios are studied. This paper proposes the predictive control with the discrete space-vector modulation (DSVM) for Vienna rectifier connecting to the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) of the wind turbine system (WTS). Since Vienna rectifier has the special operation principle, Vienna rectifier generates only the feasible eight voltage vectors, which can be a candidate vector for the predictive control, depending on the sign of the input currents. In the proposed predictive control, the feasible voltage vectors are extended from 8 to 19 consisting the 8 original voltage vectors and 11 virtual voltage vectors by using the DSVM for improving the current quality related to the torque ripple, vibration, and noise, and the neutral-point voltage balance with low voltage ripple is guaranteed by using the offset value calculated based on the model of two dc-link capacitors in Vienna rectifier. The scheme for reducing calculation burden is applied in selecting the candidate vector. In addition, the limited operation range for the maximum torque per ampere control of PMSG connected to Vienna rectifier is analyzed. This paper proposes a three-phase, five-level, non-regenerative pulsewidth modulated rectifier using only two active switches (minimum required) per phase, which drastically reduces gate driver requirement and hardware complexity. It draws sinusoidal input current at close to unity power factor. All the semiconductor devices are rated at only one fourth of the dc-link voltage, and none of them requires any transient voltage balancing snubber. A total of 8 out of the 14 diodes per phase undergo soft switching transition under all operating conditions, which increases its efficiency. No extra hardware circuitry for balancing the flying capacitors (FCs) or the dc-link mid-point voltage are required, which further reduces hardware complexity and increases the conversion efficiency. The proposed topology does not need any sophisticated startup procedure for charging the FCs either, which solves the problem of semiconductor overvoltage during starting. A 3-kW laboratory prototype is built to experimentally verify the proposed topology. This paper presents the topology and modulation technique of a three-phase three-level modified Z-source neutral-point-clamped (MZS-NPC) inverter, which combines a modified Z-source impedance network and a three-phase three-level NPC inverter. The boost factor of the proposed MZS-NPC inverter is twice as high as the three existing representative topologies combing an impedance network with a three-level NPC inverter. A modulation scheme for the proposed topology, based on a maximum boost control method, is designed to achieve the maximum voltage gain with simple implementation and to balance the dc-link neutral-point voltage. A closed-loop control of the ac load voltage in the fuel-cell or photovoltaic applications based on the proposed inverter is realized, in order to supply a desired voltage to the critical load in islanding mode of a microgrid. This paper proposes a carrier-based fault-tolerant control strategy for T-type three-level rectifier with neutral-point (NP) voltage oscillations suppression when an open-circuit fault occurs. The proposed fault-tolerant control is demonstrated by dividing fault into two conditions: the faulty condition of outer switches and inner switches. In the case of outer switches open-circuit fault, the requirement to maintain the normal operation with sinusoidal currents is demonstrated. Meanwhile, in order to suppress the NP voltage oscillations, a hybrid NP voltage control strategy, which is implemented by adding a compensation value to the reference voltage, and a dc bias are used. In the case of inner switches open-circuit fault, the fundamental period of the input current is divided into two areas: normal half-cycle and abnormal half-cycle. In the abnormal half-cycle, the reference voltage of the faulty leg is compared with a single carrier. In addition, a compensation value is added to the reference voltage to suppress the NP voltage oscillations. While in the normal half-cycle, the hybrid NP voltage control strategy and the dc bias are applied. In order to overcome the limitations of the existing classical and solid-state Marx pulse generators, this paper proposes a new modular multilevel voltage-boosting Marx pulse generator (BMPG). The proposed BMPG has hardware features that allow modularity, redundancy, and scalability as well as operational features that alleviate the need of series-connected switches and allows generation of a wide range of pulse waveforms. In the BMPG, a controllable, low-voltage input boost converter supplies, via directing/blocking (D/B) diodes, two arms of a series modular multilevel converter half-bridge sub-modules (HB-SMs). At start up, all the arm's SM capacitors are resonantly charged in parallel from 0 V, simultaneously via directing diodes, to a voltage in excess of the source voltage. After the first pulse delivery, the energy of the SM capacitors decreases due to the generated pulse. Then, for continuous operation without fully discharging the SM capacitors or having a large voltage droop as in the available Marx generators, the SM capacitors are continuously recharged in parallel, to the desired boosted voltage level. Because all SMs are parallelly connected, the boost converter duty ratio is controlled by a single voltage measurement at the output terminals of the boost converter. Due to the proposed SMs structure and the utilization of D/B diodes, each SM capacitor is effectively controlled individually without requiring a voltage sensor across each SM capacitor. Generation of the commonly used pulse waveforms in electroporation applications is possible, while assuring balanced capacitors, hence SM voltages. The proposed BMPG has several topological variations such as utilizing a buck–boost converter at the input stage and replacing the HB-SM with full-bridge SMs. The proposed BMPG topology is assessed by simulation and scaled-down proof-of-concept experimentation to explore its viability for electroporation applications. During the lifespan of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system, some heterogeneities between the cells constituting the stack can appear. The voltage of one particular cell in a stack may decrease because of specific aging or local malfunctioning such as drying. As a result, more heat is generated in this cell leading to an increase in its temperature and, thus, an additional voltage loss. This snowball effect can result in the failure of the cell. Therefore, the lifetime of a PEMFC stack can be increased by applying energy management to its cells. Note that the output voltage of a cell is lower than a stack. Hence, a high conversion ratio converter is necessary to implement such energy management. An efficient way to increase the output voltage is to connect the output capacitors of the converters such as the boosts in series. This paper presents a new five-level T-type nested neutral point clamped (T-NNPC) converter. The proposed five-level T-NNPC topology is very attractive for medium-voltage applications as it can work in a wide range of voltages without the need of devices in series, and fewer components compared to the other five-level topologies. A model predictive control (MPC) strategy is also developed for the proposed converter to control the output currents at different output frequencies, and control flying capacitor voltages. A discrete-time model of the converter is developed and the control objectives that are the output currents and flying capacitor voltages are defined regarding switching states. A cost function is defined to minimize the deviation of the predicted values of the control objectives from their desired values. During each sampling time, the best switching state is selected and applied to the converter. The performance of the proposed five-level T-NNPC and the developed MPC strategy is studied in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, and the feasibility of the converter is evaluated experimentally. A hybrid modular multilevel converter (MMC) consists of both half-bridge submodule (HBSM) and full-bridge submodule (FBSM) in each arm. It has several advantages over other MMC topologies, such as low system loss, reduced cost of the system, but still maintains fault ride-through capability against a solid dc-side fault. However, the hybrid MMC may have a difficulty of submodule (SM) voltage balancing under variation of its dc-bus voltage. Since the voltage unbalance of SMs results in SM capacitor overvoltage and low reliability of the system, the voltage of SMs, which can be also represented as energy of SMs, should be balanced at all time. In this paper, to extend the narrow adjustable range of dc-bus voltage due to the voltage/energy unbalance, new feedback and feedforward energy balancing controllers with revised sorting algorithm are proposed. The feedback control ensures the zero steady-state error, while the feedforward control provides fast dynamic response in the energy balancing control. By applying the proposed control scheme, the hybrid MMC can keep the voltage balance between HBSMs and FBSMs in wider range of dc-bus voltage.
