This paper describes a flow control of the dye in the paper mill with the quasi-Z-source indirect matrix converter (QZSIMC) fed induction motor drive. More than a decade the voltage-source inverter (VSI) and current-source inverter (CSI) have been used to control the speed of the induction motor, which in turns controls the flow of dye. Recently, the matrix converter (MC) has been an excellent competitor for the VSI or CSI for its compactness. The voltage transfer ratio of the VSI, CSI, and MC has been limited to 0.866. Thus, the efficiency of these converters is less. To improve the voltage transfer ratio the quasi-Z-source network (QZSN) is to be used between voltage source and indirect MC (IMC). The modification in the shoot-through duty ratio of the QZSN varies the voltage transfer ratio greater than 0.866. Different voltage transfer ratios are needed for different voltage sag conditions. For a variation of the duty ratio of the QZSN, the fuzzy logic controller has been presented. To control the IMC vector control with space vector modulation has been presented. This paper proposes the implementation of QZSIMC adjustable speed drive for the flow control of dye in paper mill during different voltage sag conditions. A 4-kW prototype has been built and the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified with simulation results and experimental setup. Simulation is done in MATLAB, Simulink platform. Experimental setup is done with the aid of a TMS320F2812 (Texas Instrument) processor. The experimental results validate the maintenance of the speed of an induction motor at the set condition, thus controlling the perfect flow of dye in paper manufacturing technology. Voltage-controlled three-phase three-leg inverters are widely applied in various occasions. The inverters are generally switched to the current-controlled mode to limit the fault currents when short-circuit faults happen. Under symmetrical fault, the inverter can be controlled as a symmetrical, three-phase current source. However, the voltage limiting will happen under asymmetrical fault. As a result, the fault phase currents will be distorted and cannot be completely controlled. Considering that the voltage limiting is mainly caused by large load impedance of healthy phase under asymmetrical fault, the voltage limiting is avoided by paralleling the virtual impedance with the output filter capacitor in this paper. As a result, the current limiting loop is not broken and the fault phase currents can be effectively controlled. The implementation of virtual impedance in control system and the influence of virtual impedance on the stability of system are also analyzed in detail in this paper. This paper investigates the operation of the back-to-back neutral point clamped (BTBNPC) converters when the ac voltages on both ends are asynchronous. The zero-sequence injection (ZSI) technique has been used to extend the linear modulation range of the pulsewidth modulation operation. This paper investigates the ZSI of the BTBNPC to maximize the dc-bus voltage utilization while the ac voltages of both ends have different magnitudes and phases. This study further explores the reactive current injection to reduce the risk of overmodulation when grid voltages surge. The combination of these techniques can extend the operation range of the BTBNPC over varying ac voltages of both ends with the available dc-bus voltage. This paper proposes a novel polygonal voltage space vector structure (SVS) having 30 sides, for a star-connected induction motor drive. The SVS eliminates the presence of harmonics up to 25th order from motor phase voltage throughout the entire modulation range, providing a torque profile devoid of lower order pulsations. Linear modulation is extended till 99.63% of base speed without exceeding the motor phase voltage rating. Topology consists of a dc-link fed primary inverter and two equal low voltage modular capacitor fed secondary inverters. Here the harmonics generated by the primary inverter is canceled by the secondary inverter which acts as a switched capacitive filter. In this paper, a dynamic model based on the sampled-data method is presented for a wireless power transfer (WPT) system. The orders of the derived model are equal to the orders of a system. The modeling is different from the existing dynamic modeling for WPT systems, which almost double the model's order. Furthermore, the systematic analysis process is suitable for any WPT topologies and without the higher harmonics neglected and low-frequency approximation. Meanwhile, the state variables are allowed to vary up to twice the switching frequency, since the half-period symmetry property is exploited. In this paper, the series–series (SS) compensated WPT system is chosen as an example and the large-signal model and the steady-state operation point are determined. The small-signal responses perturbed by the phase-shift angle, switching frequency, and input voltage are obtained. The derived model is more adequate with simulation and experimental validation. Four-level hybrid-clamped inverter is a newly proposed topology that can operate under a wide voltage range without switches connected in series. However, when it is applied in medium voltage high power conversions, the flying capacitors in each phase will occupy a huge volume and a high switching frequency is required to restrain the voltage ripples. In order to overcome this drawback, a four-level active neutral-point clamped inverter is discussed in this paper, which consists of only six switches and no diodes or flying capacitors are required. In order to balance the neutral-point voltages under the full power factor and modulation index range, a capacitor voltage balance method based on carrier-overlapped pulsewidth modulation is proposed in this paper. The upper and lower dc-link capacitor voltages are balanced by zero-sequence voltage injection and the central dc-link capacitor voltage is balanced by adjusting the duty cycles of switching signals slightly. First harmonic analysis (FHA) is arguably the most widely used analytical technique for wireless power transfer (WPT) circuits due to its simplicity. Although FHA can provide closed-form solutions, the existence of rectifier diode forward voltage drop and higher order harmonics, especially the second and third harmonics at variable duty cycle operation, can significantly deteriorate its accuracy. This paper presents an accurate and efficient method called enhanced multiple harmonic analysis (eMHA) for the optimal design and optimal control of WPT systems. The eMHA method considers the nature of nonlinear rectification networks under nonsinusoidal current and reexamines the concept of the equivalent load. As a result, the rectified WPT system is transformed into a series of linear systems with complex load impedances. The steady-state electric quantities can be then explicitly calculated. This enables eMHA to seamlessly work with numerical optimization algorithms to facilitate the automated design and optimization of WPT systems. An example of optimal design and optimal control of a 10 W WPT system is demonstrated. The results obtained by eMHA and FHA are also compared. A prototype of the designed circuit was constructed. The accuracy and effectiveness of eMHA are verified by experimental measurements. Collaborative control of power converters operating in microgrids with unbalanced single-phase loads is difficult to achieve, considering that the voltages and currents have positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence components. In this paper, a new control scheme for collaborative control of four-leg microgrids is proposed. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is simplicity, because the sharing of the powers produced by the positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence voltage and currents is simple to achieve using the easy to implement and well-known droop control algorithms, i.e., as those based on $P$ – $\omega$ and $Q$ – $v$ droop control. The proposed droop algorithms do not require high bandwidth communication channels and the application of virtual impedances, whose design usually demands extensive simulation work, is not required. Three secondary control systems are also analyzed, discussed, and implemented in this paper to regulate the frequency, voltage, and phase at the point of common coupling (PCC), to achieve a balanced 50-Hz three-phase voltage supply in the PCC during steady-state operation. For these secondary control systems, single-phase phase-locked loop based on quadrature signal generators are implemented. Small signal modeling and design are discussed in this paper. With the increasing of switching frequency in pulsewidth modulated motor system, common mode current (CMC) seriously affects the reliable operation of motor system and it has become a problem that cannot be ignored. This paper proposes a mathematical model of CMC and conducts detailed time–frequency characteristics analysis of CMC. The influence of several key parameters of motor system, such as distributed capacitance, dc bus voltage, and inverter switching frequency, on CMC characteristics has been analyzed in detail, and the corresponding variation rule of CMC oscillation amplitude and attenuation period/time has been summarized. The experimental results are presented to verify the correctness of theoretical analysis. The paper confirms that removing antiparallel silicon carbide (SiC) Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) from SiC-based inverters offers positive effects without critical impact on inverter loss and electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues, moreover, the removal of SBDs reduces the inverter losses in many cases and noise emissions. This conclusion leads to the possibility to improve the power densities by removing SBDs. However, the removal of SBDs may cause some disadvantages such as an increase of the reverse conduction loss and influence of the body diode recovery phenomenon. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation of these advantages and disadvantages is necessary. In this paper, design criteria are proposed to clarify the conditions in which SiC-based inverters without SBDs have advantages over those with SBDs from the viewpoint of losses. On the other hand, to achieve the removal of SBDs, it is also necessary to confirm that removing SBDs does not cause severe EMI issues. The paper confirms that switching noises are reduced by the removal of SBDs; this is due to the larger damping effect of the SiC mosfets without SBDs than that of SiC mosfets with SBDs. This paper presents an enhanced current controller for improving the performance of a class of single-phase grid-connected inverters operating in weak and distorted grid conditions. An inverter designed to operate at normal (strong or stiff and clean) grid conditions may not perform satisfactorily during weak and distorted grid conditions. One major reason is the interfering dynamics of the synchronization or phase-locked loop (PLL). This paper proposes an enhanced control structure for a popular class of single-phase inverters to address this problem. The proposed idea is to include the PLL state variables into the main inverter controller thereby minimizing the undesirable interactions of the PLL with the other components. A method for optimally designing the controller gains is also proposed. Compared to the conventional one, the proposed controller is shown to have a more robust performance over a substantially wider range of weak and distorted grid conditions. This paper presents a fault-tolerant operation for dual three-phase surface-mounted permanent magnet machines (SPMSMs) that were both electrically connected on three winding phases and mechanically connected on one shaft. The open-phase fault-tolerant operation is considered in dual three-phase SPMSMs drive thus combining motor drive of three-phase and single-phase. The proposed method controls the torque of each motor with different phases using a single inverter. In order to control these motors, the torque and current are distributed between the motors with the specific ratio. Methods for minimizing torque ripple and copper losses and maximizing the output torque of the three-phase motor are stated in this paper. Accordingly, a system with cost-effective and enhanced reliability is proposed without any configuration adjustment or auxiliary switching devices. The mathematical analysis and experiments are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. Capacitor-current-feedback active damping has been widely used in LCL-type grid-connected inverters. However, the damping performance is deteriorated due to the negative equivalent resistance resulted by the digital control delays, and thus the grid-connected inverter is apt to be unstable under the grid impedance variation. To address this issue, this paper proposes the capacitor-current proportional-integral (PI) positive feedback active damping method that can ensure a positive equivalent resistance almost within the Nyquist frequency, i.e., the full controllable frequency range. In theory, the proposed damping method can be implemented by feeding back the capacitor current through a PI function. However, the integral term will continuously accumulate the noise and dc bias arising from the feedback signal. To overcome this drawback, a more practical implementation solution is drawn in this paper. Furthermore, a straightforward design procedure is presented for the convenience of selecting the proper controller parameters. With the proposed damping method and its practical implementation, high inverter robustness against the grid impedance variation can be achieved. This paper proposes a resonant switching cell model to analyze and design the single-ended resonant dc–dc converters. The single-ended zero-voltage switching (ZVS) converters such as the Class E converter are efficient for megahertz switching because they feature low turn-on and turn-off switching losses. Also, they use only a ground-referenced switch, allowing a simple gate drive circuit. In this paper, we investigate the single-ended resonant converter with the small input inductance, whereas the conventional Class E converter has a large input inductance. The main contribution of this paper is to propose the resonant switching cell as an analytic model that simplifies the analysis and the design of the resonant dc–dc converters. Furthermore, this paper presents the design method of the resonant switching cell model for minimizing the resonant current magnitude and conduction loss while the converter maintains ZVS property. The experimental results from a 10-MHz GaN-based prototype demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the analysis and design based on the proposed resonant switching cell model. In an open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous machines drive with single dc voltage source, zero-sequence current (ZSC) can lead to a high current stress of power modules and loss of motor. Therefore, some modulation strategies have been employed to alleviate ZSC by suppressing zero-sequence voltage (ZSV). However, ZSC still exists in the system because ZSV can also be generated by other nonlinear factors of inverter such as the dead time of system. In addition, zero-sequence back electromotive force in the zero-sequence path can also enlarge torque ripple and ZSC. In order to deal with above problems, first, this paper proposes a full-order adaptive zero-sequence observer to estimate future ZSC and ZSV, which are able to compensate one-step control delay. Second, to achieve the maximum voltage dc bus utilization, this paper proposes a novel deadbeat predictive current control (DPCC) scheme with alternate sub-hexagonal center pulsewidth modulation strategy to suppress ZSC and torque ripple simultaneously. Finally, this paper presents a comparative study of two types of methods, namely traditional DPCC scheme and the proposed DPCC scheme. This paper proposes a current control of dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) based on five-leg inverter. The five-leg inverter can be utilized to drive dual three-phase PMSM with full torque at slow speed when the conventional dual three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) has a faulty inverter leg. Usually, the common leg in the five-leg inverter may have severe current stress. By dedicated selection of which two phases as a pair to share the common leg, its current rating is approximately half of current rating of other legs. Meanwhile, the five-leg inverter can fully fulfill the vector space decomposition control for dual three-phase PMSM, which has the same dynamical performance as the conventional dual three-phase VSI. However, due to the asymmetry of five-leg inverter non-linearity, the currents of dual three-phase PMSM are unbalanced. To mitigate this issue, the five-leg inverter non-linearity compensation is also introduced and investigated in this paper, whose effectiveness is verified by comparative experiments on a prototype dual three-phase PMSM. In this paper, an overload and short-circuit protection method is proposed for voltage source inverter-based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system. In order to achieve high reliability and availability of the UPS, short circuit and overload protection scheme are necessary. When overload or short circuit happens, using the proposed control method, the amplitude of the output current can be limited to a constant value, which can be set by the customer to avoid the destruction of the power converter, and to obtain a faster recovery performance as well. The detailed principle of the proposed protection method is discussed in this paper. It mainly contains three parts in the control diagram for current limit, first is the anti-windup in the voltage and current controllers, then the feedforward of the capacitor voltage to the current control loop, the last is the fast reset of the resonant part of the current controller when overcurrent happens. This paper presents a novel seven-level inverter topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. It consists of eight active switches and two inner flying capacitor (FC) units forming a similar structure as in a conventional active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter. This unique arrangement reduces the number of active and passive components. A simple modulation technique reduces cost and complexity in the control system design without compromising reactive power capability. In addition, compared to major conventional seven-level inverter topologies, such as the neutral point clamped, FC, cascaded H-bridge, and ANPC topologies, the new topology reduces the dc-link voltage requirement by 50%. This recued dc-link voltage makes the new topology appealing for various industrial applications. Experimental results from a 2.2-kVA prototype are presented to support the theoretical analysis presented in this paper. This paper presents an adaptive multi-loop control scheme for inverters interlinking dc voltage sources to single-phase, low-voltage ac grids. Control self-adaptation is particularly useful in the case of weak grids that, due to frequent physical modifications (e.g., network reconfigurations and disconnection of generators/loads) and intrinsic lack of inertia, present strongly time-variant characteristics. The solution presented in this paper is based on a high-performance converter controller with auto-tuning capabilities. It is shown that the applied auto-tuning method can significantly widen the stability region of the interlinking converter, covering a broad range of grid impedance values. In addition, within the stable region, the controller maintains the nominal performance. Experimental results are reported validating the proposed approach in realistic operating conditions, including grid voltage distortion and variations of amplitude and frequency. A novel pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme for the decoupled and coordinated control of two parallel connected split-phase induction machines is discussed in this paper for the first time. Both the motors are operated from a single six-phase voltage source inverter which acts as a power source, and two switched capacitor-fed auxiliary inverters to limit the flow of nontorque producing currents in each motor. Both the motors can be operated at its full rated power with low switching frequency, and decoupled control for full power range can be achieved with the proposed topology. This is possible because the individual machines do not carry the load/harmonic currents of other machine (unlike the conventional series or parallel connected systems). The converters can be modulated using sine-triangle PWM or space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM). Furthermore, two different schemes of SVPWM techniques are proposed and compared in this paper. Exhaustive experimental results for all the modulation schemes are provided for steady state and transient operating conditions including start-up to validate the proposed topology and modulation schemes. Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are being used in wide range of power electronic applications. These converters have attracted a lot of attention during recent years and exist in different topologies with similar basic concepts. This paper presents five main submodules (SMs) to be used as the basic structures of MLIs. The paper reviews the common MLI topologies from the structural point of view. The topologies are divided into the different SMs to show conventional MLI configurations and future topologies that can be created from the main SMs. A comparative study between different topologies is performed in detail. The MLIs are categorized and investigated with from different perspectives such as the number of components, the ability to create inherent negative voltage, working in regeneration mode and using single dc source. In medium-voltage drives, multistep model predictive control (MPC) can lower the total harmonic distortion of the stator currents and thereby reduce losses and improve efficiency. However, from the point of view of implementation, there is still uncertainty as to whether transients have a major adverse effect on achieving this improved steady-state performance. The time-varying nature of machine drives, initialization of the optimization process, and limited computational resources are identified as key factors. This paper analyzes the link between these key factors in detail, thus a suitable reformulation and selective initialization approach is designed to enable the deterministic use of multistep finite-control-set MPC irrespective of the drive system conditions. Guidelines to select the prediction horizon, weighting factor, and minimum switching frequency considering the control platform limitations are presented. The significant impacts of transients on the design and experimental validation, covering several drive conditions, are evaluated in a scaled-down three-level induction machine drive switching at 350 Hz. In this paper, a current controller for a parallel operation of inverters is described. When inverters operate in parallel, it is a well-known fact that the inverter current is composed of the average current (AVC) and the zero-sequence circulating current (henceforth ZSCC), which inevitably flows between inverters under the parallel operation. Considering this, previous studies concentrated on reducing ZSCC. However, in this paper, it is found that the inverter current has another component, a differential current, in addition to the two components of AVC and ZSCC. Based on these three decomposed current components, three equivalent circuits are derived from n-paralleled inverters. To minimize the differential current and improve the regulation performance of the total output phase current, a decomposed current control scheme is proposed from equivalent circuit models. The proposed algorithm is applied to a system consisting of three paralleled two-level inverters with small shared inductance whose dc links are connected in common. Additionally, synchronous pulsewidth modulation is employed as the PWM method for each inverter. The proposed current controller is compared with two conventional current controllers, one where each inverter controls its own currents and the other where only AVC is controlled. Through experiments, it is shown that these conventional controllers have limitations and the proposed current controller overcomes these limitations. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed control scheme are verified through experimental results. In low-power applications of photovoltaic (PV) systems, the transformerless grid-connected inverters have been preferred to increase the efficiency and reduce the cost, size, and power losses when they are compared to the ones with the transformer. A transformerless single-phase inverter topology with a single dc-link capacitor for the grid-connected PV systems is proposed in this paper. The proposed inverter has been simulated by using a cooperation process of the MATLAB and SPICE package programs and it has been implemented for experimental verification. The proposed inverter reduces the high-frequency common-mode leakage current caused by parasitic capacitances of PV panels, whereas it is controlled with the unipolar sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation. Also, the results show that the common-mode voltage remains constant. The efficiency of the proposed inverter has been compared to that of the most common topologies having the dc-link decoupling during the zero voltage states. This paper proposes a new methodology for automated design of power electronic systems realized through the use of artificial intelligence. Existing approaches do not consider the system's reliability as a performance metric or are limited to reliability evaluation for a certain fixed set of design parameters. The method proposed in this paper establishes a functional relationship between design parameters and reliability metrics, and uses them as the basis for optimal design. The first step in this new framework is to create a nonparametric surrogate model of the power converter that can quickly map the variables characterizing the operating conditions (e.g., ambient temperature and irradiation) and design parameters (e.g., switching frequency and dc link voltage) into variables characterizing the thermal stress of a converter (e.g., mean temperature and temperature variation of its devices). This step can be carried out by training a dedicated artificial neural network (ANN) either on experimental or simulation data. The resulting network is named as $\text{ANN}_{1}$ and can be deployed as an accurate surrogate converter model. This model can then be used to quickly map the yearly mission profile into a thermal stress profile of any selected device for a large set of design parameter values. The resulting data is then used to train $\text{ANN}_{2}$ , which becomes an overall system representation that explicitly maps the design parameters into a yearly lifetime consumption. To verify the proposed methodology, $\text{ANN}_{2}$ is deployed in conjunction with the standard converter design tools on an exemplary grid-connected PV converter case study. This study showed how to find the optimal balance between the reliability and output filter size in the system with respect to several design constraints. With the increasing proliferation of variable speed drive, the demand for the more reliable drive is also on the rise. Despite the growing interest on more advanced motors like permanent magnet and flux switching motors, three-phase induction motors (3ph-IMs) are still the main workhorse in the industry and hence the fault-tolerant control of these motor drives remains an interesting and important topic. In this paper, a simple fault-tolerant field-oriented control technique for 3ph-IMs is presented. It is shown that by injecting zero-sequence compensation voltage in a feedforward manner, open-circuit faults can be effectively tolerated. Compared to the previous feedforward fault-tolerant control methods, the proposed approach does not require the knowledge of the magnetizing inductance, which is tricky to be obtained in induction motors. Furthermore, the unified feedforward approach allows the same control structure to be used for different fault-tolerant 3ph-IMs drive topologies, with minor modifications to the feedforward terms. In addition, the effect of inverter non-idealities on the performance of the proposed control method is also highlighted and addressed. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified using MATLAB simulation and further validated using experimental tests. In modern power systems, the increasing penetration of renewables and power electronics, particularly inverter-based wind and solar power generation, is altering power system dynamics and bringing new stability concerns. One challenging issue that is attracting considerable attention is the wide range of power oscillations associated with multiple parallel grid-connected inverters. In such systems, the characteristics in terms of resonance and oscillation are significantly different from single-inverter systems. This paper investigates the mutual interaction and stability issues of multiple grid-interfacing inverters with LCL-filters in power-electronics-based power systems under various grid conditions. The investigation reveals that such interactions between power inverters and the grid may excite multiple resonances at various frequencies under certain grid conditions. The nodal admittance matrix concept, which was originally from power systems engineering, is adopted here. Moreover, this paper further develops an Interaction-Admittance model that can effectively describe these mutual interactions in terms of a physical network admittance. We apply our model to various scenarios such as stiff grid conditions and inductive grids with/without power factor correction capacitors. The results with the proposed framework demonstrate an intuitive interpretation of multi-inverter system resonance and instabilities. This paper describes a dc-link voltage control method of a single-phase back-to-back cascaded H-bridge inverter (SBCI) for a medium-voltage motor drive system. The main advantage of the SBCI topology over the conventional regenerative cascaded H-bridge topology with a three-phase active front-end (AFE) is a simple system structure, which is composed of an input transformer, a power cell, a current sensor, etc. However, the challenging points of the SBCI are larger voltage ripple in the dc-link capacitor and imbalance of dc-link voltages of each phase. The asymmetric dc-link voltage of each power cells could cause unstable operation such as over-modulation due to the lack of the dc-link voltage of a particular phase and result in over-voltage or under-voltage faults. In this paper, the control strategy of the dc-link voltage for the SBCI that uses the negative-sequence voltage of the converter is described. The proposed control method is verified with a computer simulation whose target is a 6.6-kV–1.25-MW medium-voltage drive system. Also, through the experimental setup with the prototype SBCI whose power rating is 16.2 kVA, the dc-link voltage of each AFE has been controlled within a 0.5% error of its reference value at the full load. The instantaneous output power of the two-stage single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverter pulsates at twice the line frequency ($2f_{{\text{o}}}$), generating second harmonic current (SHC) in the front-end dc–dc converter and PV panel, which will affect the maximum power point tracking operation and deteriorate the overall conversion efficiency. The generating mechanism of the SHC is analyzed in this paper and it is pointed that in order to eliminate the SHC in the front-end dc–dc converter and PV panel, the voltage loop gain of the front-end dc–dc converter should be high enough at $2f_{{\text{o}}}$. Since there is a −180° phase abrupt at the resonant frequency of the input side filter capacitor and the inductor, the system may be unstable. To cope with this problem, the inductor current feedback active-damping scheme (ADS) is adopted. For further improving the loop gain at $2f_{{\text{o}}}$ , proportional–integral–resonant regulator with ADS (PIR + ADS) is proposed in this paper. Besides, a step-by-step closed-loop parameters design method is presented. The photovoltaic (PV) output voltage varies over a wide range depending on operating conditions. Thus, the PV-connected converters should be capable of handling a wide input voltage range while maintaining high efficiencies. This paper proposes a new series resonant dc–dc converter for PV microinverter applications. Compared with the conventional series resonant converter, a dual-mode rectifier is configured on the secondary side, which enables a twofold voltage gain range for the proposed converter with a fixed-frequency phase-shift modulation scheme. The zero-voltage switching turn-on and zero-current switching turn-off can be achieved for active switches and diodes, thereby, minimizing the switching losses. Moreover, a variable dc-link voltage control scheme is introduced to the proposed converter, leading to a further efficiency improvement and input-voltage-range extension. The operation principle and essential characteristics (e.g., voltage gain, soft-switching, and root-mean-square current) of the proposed converter are detailed in this paper, and the power loss modeling and design optimization of components are also presented. This paper proposes a new single-current-sensor (SCS) control method for a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) driven by a quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI). In this method, the sum of two branch currents in the inverter is sampled by an SCS twice for one control period, under actions of two different shoot-through voltage vectors. Then, the three-phase currents of the motor can be reconstructed by these two sample values and can be later used for the current closed-loop control of the PMSM. In this paper, the feasibility of the SCS control method is analyzed thoroughly and a corresponding modulation strategy is given for the qZSI. Compared with the traditional SCS control methods, the new method fully eliminates the measurement dead-zone problem without any additional compensation strategy. The operation range of the PMSM extends and utilization rate of the input voltage improves. This paper presents the design of a multi-MHz inductive power transfer (IPT) system showcasing lightweight and energy-efficient solutions for non-radiative wireless power transfer. A proof of concept is developed by powering a drone without a battery that can hover freely in proximity to an IPT transmitter. The most challenging aspect, addressed here for the first time, is the complete system-level design to efficiently provide uninterrupted power flow while allowing for variable power demand and highly variable coupling factor. The proposed solution includes the design of lightweight air-core coils that can achieve sufficient coupling without degrading the aerodynamics of the drone, and the design of newly developed resonant power converters at both ends of the system. At the transmitting-end, a load-independent Class EF inverter, which can drive a transmitting-coil with constant current amplitude and achieves zero-voltage switching for the entire range of operation, was developed; and at the receiving-end, a hybrid Class E rectifier, which allows tuning for large changes in coupling and power demand, was used. For the demo, the range of motion of the drone was limited by a 7.5 cm nylon string tether, connected between the center of the transmitting-coil and the bottom of the drone. The design of the IPT system, including all the power conversion stages and the IPT link, is explained in detail. The results on performance and specific practical considerations required for the physical implementation are provided. An average end-to-end efficiency of 60% was achieved for a coupling range of 23%–5.8%. Relevant simulations concerning human exposure to electromagnetic fields are also included to assure that the demo is safe, according to the relevant guidelines. This paper proposes a novel method to determine and control active and reactive power output of the virtual ocillator control-based inverter in grid-connected mode. An analytical expression is introduced to describe the quasi-steady-state relationship between the parameters of the inverter including its controllers, and the power injection and voltage at the inverter terminals. We introduce a new, complex valued parameter (K) to the conventional virtual oscillator control (VOC) scheme in order to control the inverter output power. We compare analytic and numeric solutions of the above analytical expression with time-domain simulation results, using different K values and line impedances to validate the analytical expression. In the second part of the paper, we design a controller: we use the above expression to derive K for given reference powers and use adaptive integrators to compensate for the remaining errors. We compare this control scheme to a method that uses PI controllers, and also to a simple decoupling method for independent control of active and reactive power. The controller based on the analytical method exhibits very good dynamic and decoupling performance. In this paper, a generalized droop control (GDC) is proposed for a grid-supporting inverter based on a comparison between traditional droop control and virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control. Both the traditional droop control and VSG control have their own advantages, but neither traditional droop control nor VSG control can meet the demand for different dynamic characteristics in grid-connected (GC) and stand-alone (SA) modes at the same time. Rather than using a proportional controller with a low-pass filter, as in a traditional droop control, or fully mimicking the conventional synchronous generator parameters in a VSG control, the active power control loop of the GDC can be designed flexibly to adapt to different requirements. With a well-designed controller, the GDC can achieve satisfactory control performance; unlike a traditional droop control, it can provide virtual inertia and damping properties in SA mode; unlike a VSG control, the output active power of an inverter with GDC can follow changing references quickly and accurately, without large overshoot or oscillation in the GC mode. Moreover, given specific controller parameters, the GDC can function as both a traditional droop control and a VSG control. The GDC's controller parameter design is more intuitive and flexible, and this paper provides a distinct design process. Phase-to-neutral voltage or neutral-to-virtual neutral voltage zero-crossing points (ZCPs) detection method is usually used for sensorless brushless dc motor commutation control. Unfortunately, neither of them can be realized in lower speed range. In this paper, a simple commutation point detection method is proposed based on detecting inactive phase terminal to dc-link midpoint voltage. It eliminates the requirement of neutral wire or virtual neutral voltage and provides an amplified version of back electromotive force at the ZCPs which makes the lower speed range detection possible. As the speed increases, commutation point error is enlarged due to the low-pass filter. Utilizing the symmetry of the terminal to midpoint voltage, the phase error can be corrected. However, due to the nonlinear relationship between the detected voltage difference and phase error, it is difficult to regulate the error fast and robustly. Therefore, a novel phase regulator based on fuzzy neural network is proposed in this paper with simple structure and learning ability. In order to improve the driving range and reduce the cost of battery electric vehicles through a higher efficiency, this paper proposes to adopt multilevel converters using low-voltage Si mosfets in the electric powertrains. A multilevel Si mosfet inverter, a conventional insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) inverter, and a SiC mosfet inverter are modeled and compared using a reference vehicle over various driving cycles. The costs of the three solutions are also compared. It is shown that the multilevel Si mosfet inverter has a rather high efficiency and realizes the lowest cost among the three solutions even when the worst case of cost is considered. Sensitivity analysis also shows that the multilevel Si mosfet inverter is suitable for a wide range of vehicle concepts in addition to the reference vehicle. Moreover, the multilevel topology also features lower electromagnetic interference and provides modularity. This paper presents a novel bidirectional series resonant converter for energy storage systems (ESS). Conversion between a dc energy storage device and an ac grid has grown in importance because of the renewable energy generators and ESS used in microgrids, which usually use batteries or supercapacitors as storage devices in order to provide different services and improve the quality and reliability of the grid. This novel converter avoids the need to have two converting stages: one for converting the energy from the storage device to a regulated dc value, and the other for converting the regulated dc to the ac output. Conversion occurs via a modified dc/dc dual-bridge series resonant converter. The output bridge of the converter is attached to the input bridge through a resonant branch and a high frequency (HF) transformer, and it is also attached to the ac link through an output filter. Therefore, two ac power signals are mixed in the output bridge: a HF signal, which maintains the dc link capacitor voltage, and a low frequency power signal, which transfers energy to the grid. A new controller for a grid-connected inverter with an LCL filter is proposed in this paper. The system is described by its complex representation, and the controller is designed using the complex root locus method. The complex representation allows a considerable reduction in the order of the system, simplifying the design task and making it possible to use advanced techniques, such as the complex root locus. The new complex controller adds an extra degree of freedom that makes it possible to move the poles of the systems and to improve the stability and speed of response compared with the conventional controls. This paper analyzes the influence of phase-locked loop (PLL) on the stability of LCL-type single-phase grid-connected asymmetrical cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (ACHMI) with synchronous reference frame proportional-integral (SRF-PI) grid current control under weak grid scenarios. The ACHMI system is composed of power stage circuit and control system, where the control system contains the dual-loop current control strategy established in the hybrid reference frame, the SRF-PLL, and the hybrid modulation method employed to synthesize the multilevel output voltage. The small-signal model of the whole ACHMI system is first established by using a simple step-by-step derivation method, and then, the small-signal analysis method is adopted to linearize the ACHMI, which is then utilized to derive the impedance model of the ACHMI system. Furthermore, an improved impedance stability criterion is derived, which is then employed to analyze the system stability. By using this criterion, the stability of the ACHMI can be evaluated with the variation of the bandwidth of PLL, the output power factor angle of the ACHMI, and the amplitude of the grid current reference signal under weak grid conditions. In this paper, a systematic design procedure for the optimal selection of the PI controller of the PLL is presented, which guarantees the steady-state performance and dynamic response of the ACHMI system. With this design method, the dual-loop current control and PLL can be taken into account simultaneously when analyzing the stability margin of the ACHMI. This paper proposes a high-power-density and reliable inverter topology, which transfers the maximum power of a PV array to the load in one power conversion stage. The single-stage power conversion, along with the soft-switching capability of the proposed three-phase PV inverter promises high efficiency at all operating points. Instead of a capacitive dc link that decouples the dc–dc converter and the voltage source inverter in traditional two-stage PV inverters, a high-frequency capacitive ac link is employed in the proposed inverter, which enables exploiting a very small film capacitor, rather than a bulky electrolytic capacitor, for transferring power. Eliminating electrolytic capacitors prolongs the lifetime of this inverter. Considering the long lifetime of PV modules, this feature is of high importance in PV applications. The high-frequency ac link also allows using high-frequency transformers for providing galvanic isolation. Therefore, this inverter is expected to have a very high power density. Enhancement of dc bus voltage utilization for a five-level inverter with single dc source and capacitor-fed H-bridge (CHB) units is investigated in this paper. A carrier-based modulation technique is used for boosting the dc bus utilization, which is established by providing detailed mathematical analysis. The five-level inverter used here is realized by cascading a CHB unit to each phase of a three-level neutral point clamped inverter. The increase in dc bus voltage utilization owes to the pole voltage redundancies offered by CHB units. The floating capacitors of H-bridge units are balanced within a quarter fundamental cycle using the switching state redundancies of pole voltage levels. The aforementioned modulation technique allows the inverter to enhance the dc bus utilization from 0.577 $\text{V}_{\text{dc}}$ to 0.63 $\text{V}_{\text{dc}}$ under unity power factor. This enhancement is obtained in the linear modulation range without increasing the dc bus voltage, and thus, the inverter can operate without the presence of low-order harmonics in its phase voltages. The strength of this paper lies in its detailed mathematical analysis for finding out the limiting modulation index and power factor condition in the light of floating capacitor voltage balancing issue. Simulation as well as experimental verification of the modulation scheme is carried out on an induction motor drive under various operating conditions. This paper introduces a new cross-correlation anti-islanding detection scheme for module-integrated converters (MICs) with pseudo dc-link. The proposed scheme periodically injects a second-order harmonic current component of low magnitude (in open-loop mode) and evaluates grid response by means of correlation. The proposed scheme is highly reliable, providing nondetection-zone free operation, fast detection, and compliance with the relevant power quality and anti-islanding standards. Additionally, it excels in lower computational cost, reduced fault detection zone, and higher output power quality, compared to the referenced anti-islanding schemes that are compatible with MICs. Last but not least, it can be implemented in MIC platforms without requiring an output current sensor, being an easily upgradable solution in software level. A firm theoretical framework that considers both high penetration levels of PV systems and weak grid conditions is also included in this paper. The theoretical framework, as well as the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, is verified through extensive experimental results for various electrical-network parameters and nonlinear loading conditions. Finally, a comprehensive comparison between the proposed method and the most common anti-islanding techniques (compatible with MICs) is performed, leading to some valuable conclusions from MICs perspective. Industrial induction heating (IH) is a key manufacturing process due to its benefits in terms of efficiency, accurate output power control, and high performance. These features have made possible the extension of this technology to a wide range of industries from automotive to aeronautic, domestic, or renewable energies. One of the main challenges still present is the design of a high-performance and cost-effective process for those induction targets with complex geometries exposed to the magnetic field, being the most representative example gears present in most mechanical systems. Usually, in order to optimize the heating process, multifrequency IH systems are used, being often expensive and/or difficult to tune and control. The aim of this paper is, consequently, to propose a family of power converters able to supply the inductor system with two simultaneous frequencies in order to improve the heating process of the induction target. The proposed converter takes advantage of a multiresonant network allowing full control of the output power delivered at each frequency and, at the same time, a compact and cost-effective implementation. This paper proposes a novel method for instantaneous balancing of neutral-point (NP) voltages with stacked multilevel inverters (MLIs) for variable-speed drives. The stacked MLI uses series-connected dc sources and NPs (connecting points of dc sources) to obtain the desired levels. The balancing of NP voltages are obtained by using a low-voltage-capacitor-fed cascaded H-bridge (CHB) per phase of a symmetrical six-phase induction machine (IM), which ensures zero current drawn from NPs (at any given instant). Since no current is drawn from NPs, the single dc-link operation with stacked capacitors is also possible. The scheme is suitable for applications, where low-voltage dc sources and batteries are stacked to form a dc link. A variable-speed operation is done using a seven-level inverter scheme for a symmetrical six-phase IM, which is formed by three dc-link stacked capacitors cascaded with two low-voltage-capacitor-fed CHBs per phase. Furthermore, the method is extended for an open-end IM to obtain a seven-level common-mode eliminated space vector structure using a single dc link. The generalization of this method for any stacked $n$ -level inverter without NP voltage deviation is also presented in this paper. This paper presents a novel single-stage soft-switched high-frequency-link three-phase dc–ac converter topology. The topology supports unidirectional dc to ac power flow and is targeted for applications like grid integration of photovoltaic sources, fuel cell, etc. The high frequency magnetic isolation results in reduction of system volume, weight, and cost. Sine-wave pulsewidth modulation is implemented in dc-side converter. Though high-frequency switched, dc-side converter is soft switched for most part of the line cycle. The ac-side converter active switches are line frequency switched incurring negligible switching loss. The line frequency switching of ac-side converter facilitates use of high voltage blocking inherently slow semiconductor devices to generate high voltage ac output. In addition, a cascaded multilevel structure is presented in this paper for direct medium-voltage ac grid integration. A detailed circuit analysis considering nonidealities like transformer leakage and switch capacitances, is presented in this paper. A 6-kW three-phase laboratory prototype is built. Soft magnetic powder cores with their high saturation flux density and low core loss are excellent alternatives for filter inductors in inverter-based applications. However, their nonlinear current-dependent inductance characteristics pose a challenge for control of grid-connected inverter with LCL filter. In this paper, the variable inductance conundrum is discussed and a modified direct digital control method based on a variable-structure inductance estimation model that takes into consideration wide nonlinear variation in both inverter- and grid-side inductances is proposed. The proposed method is shown to have better grid-voltage harmonic rejection and improved stability margins. However, investigation of stability which is conventionally based on nominal values of filter inductors cannot predict instabilities over the entire range of inductance variation. Hence, a parametric approach to conventional stability methods with a parameter space defined by variation in actual and estimated inductance is explored in this paper. The effect of line impedance on stability is also investigated with impedance-based stability criterion by considering line inductance as an additional dimension in the parameter space. A pattern in stability margins is observed due to inductance variation, with inductance at its minimum being most vulnerable to instability. Experimental results measured from a 5 kW single-phase grid-connected inverter with various LCL filters have verified the feasibility of the proposed control method. This paper proposes a high-efficiency single-phase T-type boundary conduction mode (BCM) microinverter. The conventional full-bridge BCM microinverter has achieved zero voltage switching (ZVS) and thereby improved the efficiency, but it suffers from high switching losses under light load conditions. The proposed T-type BCM microinverter reserves ZVS and uses a multilevel technique to further decrease the switching losses. The BCM operation with multilevel technique will have too low switching frequency when the grid voltage approaches half of the dc link voltage. To solve this problem, this paper adopts a third operation mode for the T-type switching leg to maintain the switching frequency above a minimum value. The corresponding mode transitions are also detailed to ensure a smooth operation. Because of the turn-offdelay of the freewheeling transistor, the actual lower current boundary deviates from the programmed one, which will distort output current. To address this issue, this paper also proposes a boundary compensation method. A prototype has been built for performance verification, which can test both full-bridge and T-type topology. This paper presents the digital implementation of a boundary controller with unipolar switching characteristic for single-phase voltage source full-bridge inverters. This paper expands the application of a second-order switching surface-based control method to unipolar switching of single-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs) using a finite-state machine. The finite-state machine has been formulated considering four different states of the inverter; positive,zero1, negative, andzero2. The second-order boundary control governs the current state of the system and provides proper switching action to keep the system within the desired reference. The control law is implemented digitally in F28m35x digital control card. A full-bridge inverter topology is used to achieve the three-level voltage switching. Various simulations and experiments were performed in a 550 VA, 120 V, 60 Hz VSI with a digitally implemented controller to verify the theoretical predictions. A high-quality voltage output was obtained for various loading conditions. The transient performance of the controller was investigated using a reference and load changes. This paper proposes a split-capacitor four-wire current source inverter, which is the dual of the split-capacitor four-wire voltage source inverter. Since the midpoint of the dc link is tied to the neutral point of ac filter capacitors, the common-mode voltage (CMV) is reduced significantly. Consequently, the leakage current issue is effectively addressed. The proposed circuit is cost-effective as no extra switch is added. This paper, first, establishes the equivalent common-mode circuit of the proposed inverter. The impact of the neutral line inductance on CMV is also analyzed. Then, a specific modulation is introduced to balance the dc-link voltages/currents. To achieve good input/output performance, a nonlinear control method is developed based on time-domain models. This paper introduces a new bidirectional single-phase inverter topology. The proposed topology has three ports: a dc port, an ac port, and a ripple port. The ac and dc ports are bidirectional to support rectifier or inverter operation. A small inductor, which is of alternating current, exchanges power between different ports of the single-phase system. The proposed topology is capable of accomplishing voltage step-up or step-down, suppressing the ripple power, and performing inversion or rectification operation in one stage of power conversion. The proposed configuration offers an active decoupling function, which not only eliminates the double-frequency ripple power at the dc port but also achieves minimum capacitance requirements to minimize the size of the decoupling capacitor. This facilitates the use of a very small thin-film capacitor, which offers a much longer life-cycle and higher reliability compared with a bulky electrolytic capacitor. A control approach is also developed to regulate the dc-port and ac-port currents and manage the ripple power through proper distribution of power between each port. Moreover, a very small capacitor can be placed in parallel with the inductor to reinforce the proposed configuration with soft-switching operation, which enhances the overall efficiency and minimizes the voltage stress over the semiconductor devices. This converter is capable of accommodating an arbitrary number of dc or single-phase ac sources and/or loads configuring a multiple-input multiple-output inverter without introducing any additional passive elements or sacrificing the performance of the inverter.
