This paper is concerned with control-oriented modeling of a class of wireless power transfer systems with a phase-shift-controlled inverter. Two methods are investigated: the analytical modeling method, which is based on physical laws, and the refined instrumental variable method, which is based on sampled data. It shows that the former provides physical insights into the system, and that the resulting models will be accurate if the true circuit component parameters are a priori known. Otherwise, the model accuracy may decline. By contrast, the latter provides a cheap solution for accurate modeling, based only on a set of sampled input–output data, and the resulting model can capture very well the dynamic behavior of the system within a defined operating range. In real applications, it is always hard to know the actual circuit component parameters, since they may drift from the nominal values, due to some reasons such as the aging of circuit components and the variation of coil placement, making the analytical modeling method not very accurate. Therefore, to preserve the virtues of both methods, it is suggested to use them as a combination, that is, using the analytical modeling method to determine the model structure while using the data-driven modeling method to estimate the model parameters. In this paper, a railway power conditioner (RPC) based on a modular multilevel converter (MMC) with a split supercapacitor energy storage system (SCESS) is studied. In this case, the MMC-SCESS-based RPC could not only provide normal negative-sequence current compensation, but also reduce the impact of power fluctuations caused by the locomotive braking or startup on the electric grid. First, this paper analyzes the power flow patterns and deduces the reference circulating current under different operation modes of the MMC-SCESS-based RPC. Then, the control objectives of the MMC-SCESS-based RPC are divided into two categories—the balance control and the current tracking control. The balance control methods are developed for the submodule capacitor voltages and the state of charge of the supercapacitor, which are associated with the operation modes. To ensure the current tracking performance, a model-predictive direct current control method is presented for the MMC and the bidirectional energy converter. Multi-objective optimization of power converters is a time-consuming task, especially when multiple operating points and multiple converter topologies must be considered. As a result, various steps are often taken to simplify the design problem and restrict the size of the design space prior to going through an optimization procedure. While this saves time, it produces potentially sub-optimal designs, and existing approaches must tradeoff between running time and design optimality. This paper presents an optimization-oriented method for modeling power converters and their components as posynomial functions, allowing multi-objective optimization of converters to be formulated as a geometric program, a type of convex optimization problem. This allows the use of fast, powerful solvers that guarantee global optimality of solutions. The method is demonstrated using the example of low-power multi-level flying capacitor step-down converters. Results show that, using geometric programming, sets of globally Pareto-optimal designs of two-, three-, and four-level converters with respect to efficiency and power density, for one design space and one operating point, can be generated in as little as 25 s, on a mid- to upper range laptop computer. Thus, optimal designs for three different converter topologies for hundreds of different operating points and/or design spaces can be generated in several hours—less than the time required to globally optimize one converter topology at one operating point for one design space using currently prevalent methods. In finite control set predictive torque control (FCS-PTC), mismatched parameters will lead to the electromagnetic torque prediction error. To solve the aforementioned problem, this paper proposes feedback-correction-based dual reference frame predictive torque control for induction machines, abbreviated as DRF-PTC. First, a DRF flux observer is proposed, which abandons a traditional model reference adaptive observer with rotor speed as adaptive variable. The proposed flux observer decouples the flux observation and the speed estimation and improves the estimation accuracy of flux linkage and rotor speed. Second, a DRF-PTC is proposed to eliminate the effect of speed estimation error on torque prediction. For the influence of mismatched parameters, a correction term is incorporated in double reference frame torque prediction equations, in which the correction term is derived from the correction term of the proposed flux observer. Finally, the proposed DRF-PTC in this paper is verified on the experimental platform of an induction machine. Analytical expressions that have been derived to calculate ac resistance and losses of magnetic devices at high frequencies have primarily used a one-dimensional approximation, and have used Cartesian coordinates or approximations that are equivalent to Cartesian coordinates. The result is Dowell's equation. This paper examines the effect of winding curvature on the losses relative to Dowell's equation by solving the problem completely in cylindrical coordinates. The error in Dowell's equation relative to a full cylindrical solution is found to be as great as 33% for some designs. A mathematical model is derived for the relative error between the two solutions, which can be used to assess the accuracy of Dowell's equation for a particular design, as well as a correction factor for Dowell's equation. The corrected Dowell's equation using the model is validated using finite-element analysis simulations as well as previously published experimental data. In this paper, a new dc–dc high voltage gain converter with low-voltage stresses on switches and diodes is proposed. Even though, in the topology of the proposed converter there are not any coupled inductors and transformer utilized, the voltage conversion ratio of the proposed converter is considerable in comparison to its conventional types. Also, two switches of the proposed converter provide longer charge time for two inductors which make the proposed converter capable of providing high voltage gain without preselecting extremely large duty cycles. In addition, the number of power circuit components of the proposed structure are few and the voltage stresses on semiconductor elements are low. In this paper, theoretical analysis of the proposed converter for each operating mode is presented and the voltage gain, voltage and average current stresses of elements, maximum input current ripple, efficiency and equations of critical inductances are calculated. Moreover, to verify the capability of the proposed converter, it is comprehensively compared with other similar recently presented high voltage gain boost converters. Finally, an approximately 12 V/380 V and 520-W prototype of the proposed converter is implemented in laboratory to demonstrate its practical performance, then, the experimental results reconfirm each other and theoretical analysis. This paper introduces a novel modeling approach that allows to obtain fast simulations of pulsewidth-modulated dc–dc switched-mode power supplies (SMPS). The proposed methodology combines the use of precise switched models during transient evolutions and averaged models during steady-state or slowly varying conditions. In that way, the resulting mixed modeling approach enables to obtain the detailed switching behavior of SMPS in the context of long-term simulations. The commutation between models is automatically performed in runtime by an algorithm that detects the transient or slowly varying condition according to the evolution of some model variables. When the precise switched model is used, the mentioned algorithm also adjusts the averaged model parameters so that its results are accurate irrespective of the operating point. This paper also describes the implementation of the methodology in the Modelica language and reports simulation experiments showing that the results are as accurate as those obtained using precise switched models, but several times faster. This paper presents a unified physics-based insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) compact model for circuit simulation that predicts the performance of both Si and SiC, n- and p-channel devices. The model can predict the detailed switching waveforms of these technologies based on its charge-based formulation. Further, this compact IGBT model is presented alongside a unique datasheet-driven parameter extraction process. The parameter extraction process enables users to quickly extract model parameters from data typically published without the need of taking physical measurements. The model has been validated with both Si and SiC devices for static and dynamic characteristics. The SiC IGBTs used for validation are a 12.5-kV n-channel device and a 13-kV p-channel device, while the Si IGBT chosen was IXDH30N120 from IXYS Corp. (Milpitas, CA, USA). This is the only IGBT model that predicts the performance of both n- and p-channel, Si and SiC devices, providing more freedom for the development of complex power electronics circuit designs. The convergence of the model has been verified by implementing a complex circuit consisting of both a dc–dc converter and a dc–ac inverter. The results presented here show that the unified model can be used to describe the behavior of a wide range of Si and SiC IGBT circuits. In this paper, a current controller for a parallel operation of inverters is described. When inverters operate in parallel, it is a well-known fact that the inverter current is composed of the average current (AVC) and the zero-sequence circulating current (henceforth ZSCC), which inevitably flows between inverters under the parallel operation. Considering this, previous studies concentrated on reducing ZSCC. However, in this paper, it is found that the inverter current has another component, a differential current, in addition to the two components of AVC and ZSCC. Based on these three decomposed current components, three equivalent circuits are derived from n-paralleled inverters. To minimize the differential current and improve the regulation performance of the total output phase current, a decomposed current control scheme is proposed from equivalent circuit models. The proposed algorithm is applied to a system consisting of three paralleled two-level inverters with small shared inductance whose dc links are connected in common. Additionally, synchronous pulsewidth modulation is employed as the PWM method for each inverter. The proposed current controller is compared with two conventional current controllers, one where each inverter controls its own currents and the other where only AVC is controlled. Through experiments, it is shown that these conventional controllers have limitations and the proposed current controller overcomes these limitations. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed control scheme are verified through experimental results. The capacitance of sub-module capacitor has a great impact on the cost, size, and operation of the modular multi-level converter (MMC). However, the capacitance selected by the existing methods does not always meet the requirement in practice. To find out the reasons for this improper selection, the existing selection methods are analyzed in this paper. Based on the analysis, a new capacitance-selection method is proposed. In the new method, the problems of the existing methods are solved, and the calculation of capacitor voltage is based on a proposed capacitor-voltage model whose calculation error can be smaller than 0.1%. Furthermore, the Secant Method is used in the capacitance selection to quickly calculate the required capacitance. The new capacitance-selection method can be applicable to the MMC not having a circular operating region. In addition, this paper found that the capacitor voltage and the capacitor-voltage ripple reach their maximum values when the power-factor angles of the MMC are –π/2 and π/2, respectively, and the dc component in the capacitor voltage changes according to the operating condition of the MMC. A very simple sequential model predictive control (SMPC) is recently proposed to achieve high performance control of induction motor drives. By evaluating two separate cost functions for the torque and amplitude of the stator flux linkage in a cascaded way, the weighting factor in the conventional MPC is eliminated. However, it is shown in this paper that the conventional SMPC cannot achieve stable operation over the full speed range, if the cost function for the stator flux linkage is first evaluated. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a generalized SMPC (GSMPC), which is effective when any one of the two cost functions is first evaluated. Compared to the conventional SMPC, GSMPC not only eliminates the limitation on the execution order of two cost functions, but also presents less stator flux ripples and lower current total harmonic distortion with even lower average switching frequency. Furthermore, a simple field-weakening strategy is proposed and combined with GSMPC to widen the speed range by adjusting the torque and stator flux linkage reference online. System identification is fundamental in many recent state-of-the-art developments in power electronic such as modeling, parameter tracking, estimation, self-tuning and adaptive control, health monitoring, and fault detection. Therefore, this paper presents a comprehensive review of parametric, non-parametric, and dual hybrid system identification for dc–dc switch mode power converter (SMPC) applications. The paper outlines the key challenges inherent with system identification for power electronic applications; speed of estimation, computational complexity, estimation accuracy, tracking capability, and robustness to disturbances and time-varying systems. Based on the literature in the field, modern solutions to these challenges are discussed in detail. This paper proposes a novel method to determine and control active and reactive power output of the virtual ocillator control-based inverter in grid-connected mode. An analytical expression is introduced to describe the quasi-steady-state relationship between the parameters of the inverter including its controllers, and the power injection and voltage at the inverter terminals. We introduce a new, complex valued parameter (K) to the conventional virtual oscillator control (VOC) scheme in order to control the inverter output power. We compare analytic and numeric solutions of the above analytical expression with time-domain simulation results, using different K values and line impedances to validate the analytical expression. In the second part of the paper, we design a controller: we use the above expression to derive K for given reference powers and use adaptive integrators to compensate for the remaining errors. We compare this control scheme to a method that uses PI controllers, and also to a simple decoupling method for independent control of active and reactive power. The controller based on the analytical method exhibits very good dynamic and decoupling performance. Synchronverters have gained interest due to their capability of emulating synchronous machines, offering self-synchronization to the grid. Despite the simplicity of the control structure, the adoption of an LCL filter makes the overall model complex again, posing questions regarding the tuning of the synchronverter and its robustness. The multi-inputs multi-outputs (MIMO) formulation of the problem requires multivariable analysis. In this paper, the effects of control parameter and grid conditions on the stability of the system are investigated by means of structured singular values (or $\mu$ -analysis). A step-by-step design procedure for the control is introduced based on a linearized small-signal model of the system. Then, the design repercussions on the stability performance are evaluated through the performed robustness analysis. The developed linearized model is validated against time-domain simulations and laboratory experiments. These have been carried out using a power hardware-in-the-loop test bench, which allows as to test the synchronverter under different grid conditions. A non-segmented PSpice model of silicon carbide metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (SiC mosfet) with temperature-dependent parameters is proposed in this paper, which can improve the model's convergence and temperature characteristics. The non-segmented equations and the parameter-extraction method for the proposed SiC mosfet PSpice model are introduced first. Simulation and experiment results are given to verify the correctness of the model while considering the temperature-dependent parameters. The static characteristics of the model are verified by comparing the simulation curves with the static characteristic curves in the SiC mosfet's datasheet, and its dynamic characteristics are verified by comparing the simulation results with experimental results under different ambient temperatures (25, 75, and 125 °C) based on a double-pulse test platform. Moreover, the proposed non-segmented model, the conventional segmented model, and the model from the manufacturer are adopted and simulated in a full-bridge inverter. The simulation results show better convergence of the proposed non-segmented model. Therefore, an accurate and practical simulation model of SiC mosfet is provided for circuit design in this paper. Recent studies have proved that sustainable saturation operation of Ferrite Power Inductors (FPIs) allows reducing the inductor size and increasing the power density in Switch-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) applications. This paper discusses a new behavioral model for reliable prediction of ac power loss in FPIs, including the effects of saturation. The new model has been identified by means of the Genetic Programming (GP) algorithm combined with a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) technique, starting from large sets of power loss experimental measurements. The proposed ac power loss model uses as input variables the voltage and switching frequency imposed to the inductor by the SMPS operation, while the dc inductor current is used as a parameter expressing the impact of saturation. Such quantities can be easily determined for whatever converter topology and in real-world switching operation, thus confirming the readiness and the easiness-to-use of the proposed behavioral model. The results of experimental tests presented in this paper prove the reliability of the power loss predictions, also by correctly accounting for the impact of inductors saturation. A recent paper by Hoffmann et al. presents a discrete-time model in a rotating $dq$ reference frame of an R-L filter and its current control. The purpose of this note is, first, to show that the discrete model presented in the paper behaves differently to the sampled continuous-time model of the plant, formulated in the stationary $\alpha \beta$ reference frame; second, to find the proper discretization of the plant in $dq$ coordinates; and third, to verify that there is cross coupling between axes $d$ and $q$ in the closed-loop system if the original model is used, and that this coupling is not present when using the model found in this note. In the paper by Patra et al., a single-inductor multiple-output switcher was presented to produce buck, boost, and inverted outputs simultaneously. Unfortunately, this study showed some unexpected mistakes, especially in state-space equations and in the calculation of output voltages. The objective of this note was to provide correct analysis and rectify the errors in this paper. Some tables and equations have been modified that were present in the initial draft of this paper. In dc distribution networks, the parallel H-bridge dc/dc converters (HBDCs) are widely adopted to convert voltage levels with the higher power rating and reliability, in which the parallel HBDCs are naturally connected in input-parallel output-parallel (IPOP) form. However among IPOP HBDCs, there are complicated circulating currents that will influence the safe and steady operation of dc distribution networks. This paper focuses on the suppression of these circulating currents. First, the detailed mathematic models of circulating currents among IPOP HBDCs are derived. Through the model, it is found that various types of circulating currents exist in the system, including the circulating currents within the single HBDC and the circulating currents among the multiple HBDCs. Hence, the suppression of circulating currents among IPOP HBDCs is a multiobjective control problem. In this paper, it is proven that the conventional one degree of freedom control based on the bipolar modulation cannot eliminate all the circulating currents. Second, a novel two degrees of freedom control method is proposed to suppress all kinds of circulating currents based on the improved modulation way of HBDCs, which consists of two parts. The droop based control is used to suppress the circulating currents among the multiple HBDCs, whereas the common mode control is used to control the circulating currents within the single HBDC. The modular smart transformer (ST) is composed by several basic converters rated for lower voltage and power. In this paper, the quadruple active bridge (QAB) is used as the basic block for the modular ST. In this application, the efficiency and cost are the most important design parameters. Therefore, the paper focus on the design of the converter, with the aim to optimize its efficiency, taking the cost into consideration. To do so, the losses of all components are carefully modeled and a computer-aided design is used, where an algorithm to calculate the losses and cost is developed, allowing to perform multiobjective optimization. Additionally, silicon IGBTs and silicon carbide mosfets are considered for the design and the performance of the converter using both semiconductors technology is compared. This paper presents a novel platform for accurate mathematical modeling of the propulsion system of electric cars. It provides, for the first time, a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) real-time experimental verification case study of a General Motor Chevrolet Volt for power, control systems, and the mechanical systems. The contribution of this paper can be categorized into three approaches: First, each component of the powertrain is accurately modeled taking transient dynamics of all components of the electric vehicle into consideration. Further, a PSIM simulation platform is consequently developed to demonstrate the validity of this mathematical modeling. Finally, the Typhoon HIL is used to provide the experimental verification of the proposed model in real time, which precisely validates the viability of the model. HIL technology is used to prototype and test the proposed control system while simulating the power circuit on the HIL module platform. The permanent magnet synchronous motor and the power electronics hardware components are simulated in real time at which the parameters can be changed during the simulation. However, the control algorithm is generated as a C code and downloaded to the TI controller that exists on a digital signal processing board. The results from the simulation based on PSIM environment and hardware validations using HIL are in agreement, which validates the developed model. The performance has been investigated under different load operating conditions in real time to verify its robustness. This paper presents nonlinear optimization-based position and speed estimation scheme for IPMSM drives with arbitrary signal injection generated by inherent switching ripples associated with finite control set model predictive control (FCSMPC). The existing standard sensorless techniques are not suitable for FCSMPC which applies voltage vectors directly to an electrical machine without a modulator. The proposed method optimizes the nonlinear cost function derived from the standard IPMSM model with respect to position and speed at every sampling interval. This method can be applied to any type of signal injection and, hence, an ideal candidate for sensorless FCSMPC. In this method, the signal injection is needed only to generate persistent excitation to maintain the observability at low speeds. A strong persistent excitation is always present with FCSMPC except at standstill where the control applies null vector when the reference currents are zero. This situation is overcome in this paper by introducing a small negative $d$ -axis current at standstill. Thus, the proposed method can estimate the position and speed over a wide speed range starting from standstill to the rated speed without a changeover or additional signal injection. This paper also presents detailed convergence analysis and proposes a compensator for standstill operation that prevents converging to saddle and symmetrical solutions, and therefore, also eliminates the well-known ambiguity of $\pi$ rad in position estimation. In contactless energy transfer and vibration system (CETVS) for rotary ultrasonic machining, the energy is delivered to an ultrasonic transducer equipped with a rotary spindle shank through a loosely coupled transformer (LCT). The purpose of this paper is to present a simplified construct, referred to as self-compensation system, to overcome the drawbacks of external compensation elements occupying the limited shank space during the LCT's leakage inductance compensating and the transducer's capacitance compensating. The advantage of this approach is that the secondary leakage inductive reactance of the LCT and the capacitive reactance of the transducer are mutually compensated without an intermediate element, which conserves the spindle shank space and reduces the operating load of an LCT. In this paper, we first derive the mutual compensation equation between a transducer and an LCT. Then, for a given transducer, the structural parameters of an LCT are designed with theoretical calculations and simulation analysis. Experiments are conducted with the self-compensation system excited by a 50 V ultrasonic signal. The results show that the energy transfer efficiency of LCT reached 92.0%, the amplitude of the transducer reached $10.7\,\mu {\rm{m}}$ , when the CETVS is self-compensated. It is known that, when tightly regulated, actively controlled power converters behave as constant power loads (CPLs). These loads can significantly degrade the stability of their feeder system. The loop-cancelation technique has been established as an appropriate methodology to mitigate this issue within dc–dc converters that feed CPLs. However, this has not yet been applied to uncontrolled rectifier based ac–dc converters. This paper therefore details a new methodology that allows the loop-cancelation technique to be applied to uncontrolled rectifier based ac–dc converters in order to mitigate instability when supplying CPLs. This technique could be used in both new applications and easily retrofitted into existing applications. Furthermore, the key contribution of this paper is a novel adaptive stabilization technique, which eliminates the destabilizing effect of CPLs for the studied ac–dc power system. An equation, derived from the average system model, is introduced and utilized to calculate the adaptable gain required by the loop-cancelation technique. As a result, the uncontrolled rectifier based ac–dc feeder system is always stable for any level of CPL. This paper presents two novel measurement methods to characterize silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET devices. The resulting data are utilized to significantly improve the extraction of a custom device model that can now accurately reproduce device switching behavior. First, we consider the $I_{\text{d}}- V_{\text{ds}}$ output characteristics of power devices such as SiC transistors. These are typically measured using traditional curve tracers, but the characterization of the high-voltage and high-current (HVHC) region is very challenging because of device power compliance and self-heating. In this paper, we introduce a measurement technique that overcomes self-heating and derives the HVHC region from switching waveforms. The switching transient characteristics of devices are used to determine drain current $(I_{\text{d}})$ as a function of drain–source voltage $(V_{\text{ds}})$ in the HVHC range. Second, we consider another challenging characterization area: measurement of nonlinear capacitances when device is turned on. These capacitance characteristics of on-state devices are important for correcting disagreements between simulations and measurements in turn-off switching transient waveforms and cannot be measured using a conventional capacitance-voltage meter. We introduce S-parameter measurements as an effective method to obtain the capacitance characteristics of both off-state devices and on-state devices. These novel measurement techniques have been applied to the modeling of a SiC device. The extracted device model, a modified version of the popular Angelov−GaN high-electron-mobility transistor model, shows significant improvement in terms of the accuracy of switching waveforms of devices over a wide range of operating conditions. In this paper, we demonstrate how latency insertion method (LIM) can be used for real-time simulation of high switching frequency power electronics systems and how this approach can be implemented for scalable Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) execution. We first present a summary of the LIM and how this method can be developed into a solver for high-performance FPGA execution. We then present how common power electronics topologies—buck and boost—can be modeled using the LIM approach, followed by how the LIM model of a three-phase dc/ac converter is created. Afterward, we demonstrate the accuracy of the developed FPGA solver through a set of power electronic system examples, with each example compared with near ideal results of same example provided by a traditional electromagnetic transient type solver. Conventional finite control set-model predictive control (FCS-MPC) applies single voltage vector within each control period. This leads to relatively high steady-state ripples and requires fast sampling rate. Additionally, enumeration-based optimal vector selection is computationally intensive. Recently, double-vector-based schemes have been proposed to improve the steady-state performance of FCS-MPC. However, they are usually complicated in vector selection and duty ratio calculation. In this paper, a universal multiple-vector-based MPC (UMV-MPC) is proposed, which achieves the same performance as the state-of-the-art double-vector-based MPC, but executes in a much more efficient and universal way. Unlike conventional FCS-MPC, enumerating process and state predictions for candidate voltage vectors are not required in the proposed UMV-MPC to select the best voltage vectors. In UMV-MPC, the optimal vectors and duty ratios are directly constructed from deadbeat control (DBC) based on space vector modulation (SVM), which is easy to follow and quick to use. The proposed UMV-MPC is not only more efficient than prior methods, but also reveals the inherent relationship between double-vector-based MPC and DBC with SVM. A comparative study of UMV-MPC and prior double-vector-based MPC is carried out in this paper. This article proposes a novel high-performance predictive control with long prediction horizons to improve the control performance of the multilevel inverters. The finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) has obtained a lot of attention for power converters due to its advantages of high dynamic performance, multi objective capability, no need for PI regulators and PWM modulators. However, the MPC method requires a high number of computations especially for higher-level power converter topologies due to the existence of a huge amount of switching combinations and redundancies. Real-time searching for the optimal switching state among a large candidate pool at a high sampling rate is sometimes impossible with the standard commercial processors. This limitation also prevents real-time implementation of an MPC for multilevel converters with step prediction more than one. To solve the aforementioned issues, this paper presents a novel high-performance FCS-MPC scheme. The proposed FCS-MPC is reformulated mathematically MPC approach to an l 2 norm optimization problem, which can be solved on-line through matrix theory. Compared with the existing MPC optimization algorithms, the proposed MPC formulation has the advantage of a substantial reduction in computational burden, no need for the weighting factors or cost functions, and thus can operate at long horizon prediction length. The proposed method is verified experimentally on a seven-level CHB inverter prototype with a three-step prediction length to demonstrate the ability and performance of the proposed method for multilevel inverters. In the traditional three-resistor-based current sampling scheme, the sampled currents will become inaccurate when the duration of zero-voltage vectors of an inverter is too short, which leads to a limited modulation index (MI). To overcome this problem, an improved three-resistor sampling method is proposed by establishing a predictive current model of an inverter load, which is that of an induction motor on the synchronous rotating frame for the demonstration purpose in this paper. The principle of this method is detailed in the paper. Then a simulation model of a vector-controlled induction motor drive that utilizes the proposed current sampling scheme is built in the Simulink environment. Finally, the experiment on the new sampling scheme is performed in both steady-state and dynamic conditions. The results verify that the existing current sampling problems can be solved effectively and the motor can perform well with higher MI under the new scheme. An analytical steady-state model of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) can be used for component sizing and assessment of the impact of different parameters on the MMC performance. Thus, this paper proposes an enhanced steady-state model for the MMC, which enables one to calculate the amplitudes of the harmonic components of MMC arm currents, submodule capacitor voltages, and arm voltages. In addition, the proposed model allows for the calculation of the amplitude and phase angle of the modulating signal, and it also presents a criterion for resonance of the arm currents. This is achieved by means of a polynomial function of the modulation index, and through checking the stability criteria established by the proposed model. The capability of formulating the modulating signal enables a more accurate calculation of the steady-state amplitudes of the variables, as compared to the previously published models. This paper also presents an accurate method of submodule capacitor sizing, based on the proposed steady-state model. The proposed method gives the exact value of the submodule capacitance (i.e., the capacitance that results in dc voltage fluctuations within a desired range) for a prespecified submodule capacitor voltage variation and a given circulating current amplitude. The stability criterion given by the proposed steady-state model, used for sizing the arm inductance, and the submodule capacitor voltage variation given by the proposed capacitor sizing method, used for sizing the submodule capacitor, allows for the determining of the operating limits of the MMC in terms of its parameters. Extensive simulation results are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed steady-state model and the capacitor sizing method. This paper proposes an optimized mathematical model of the voltage-source inverter parallel-operation system (VSIPS) and proposes an improved droop control method based on this model, which can realize accurate power sharing in VSIPS. First, this paper analyzes VSIPS as a multi-input and multioutput system and proposes a precise definition of circulating current. The circulating-current model, the steady-state model, and the small-signal model are proposed subsequently based on the optimum design of wire impedance, which constitute the optimized mathematical model of VSIPS in s-domain. The circulating-current phasor model and the circulating-current power phasor model (CCPPM) are also proposed. Second, the mathematical model of traditional droop control is built and analyzed based on CCPPM, which elaborates the tradeoff of droop control between the steady-state voltage bias and the load-sharing accuracy, and proves that the $V- Q$ droop control cannot realize accurate reactive-power sharing. Third, an improved droop control method ( $\omega - P_{{\text{cir}}}$ and $V- Q_{{\text{cir}}}$ control) is proposed, which can realize the accurate active- and reactive-power sharing and eliminate the steady-state voltage bias simultaneously. The three phases of brushless dc motor (BLDCM) are involved in energy conversion during the commutation interval. A novel commutation analysis method of the BLDCM based on coordinate transformation theory is proposed in this paper, though this coordinate transformation theory is popular in the control of three-phase sinusoidal motors, such as induction motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors. The method is intuitive and easy to understand compared with the method based on circuit solving. Combined with the voltage vector diagram of the inverter, commutation control to reduce commutation torque ripple under low speed (LS_RCTR) and high speed (HS_RCTR) is deduced. However, under a heavy load and high-speed condition, long commutation time may result in commutation failure if these commutation controls to RCTR is adopted. To avoid that, commutation time must be controlled. Then, commutation control to reduce commutation time under low-speed (LS_RCT) and high-speed (two cases, named HS_RCT1 and HS_RCT2) are proposed. The improved control of BLDCM presented in this paper can coordinate commutation torque ripple and commutation time in full speed range. The quality factor of coils should be high enough to deliver power efficiently during inductive power transfer. To achieve a higher quality factor, coils are designed either with a larger size and thicker wire or with a special structure, making the coils bulky and complicating the fabrication. This paper presents a systematic method to design the coils in series–series inductive power transfer with the smallest possible value of quality factor to realize the requirements of power transferability and efficiency. The electrical parameters of the coils are normalized, decoupled in equations, and designed sequentially. It is found that the smallest value of the quality factor for required efficiency is achieved using an optimal normalized impedance. The physical parameters of the coils are selected sequentially to realize the electrical parameters. This paper presents two operating conditions of series–series inductive power transfer, and example sets of coils with a 100-mm air gap are designed for these operating conditions using the same procedure. The coils were fabricated and tested in a 3.3-kW converter. The measured output voltage (200–400 V for 400 V input) and the coils' efficiency (98.9% at peak power) met the specifications. This paper proposes a current sensorless control strategy for the dual active bridge (DAB) converter with nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO)-based load current feedforward. The proposed method can regulate both the dc-bus voltage and the current of the DAB converter without current sensors. Several performance indexes are established for the parameter design and a detailed design method is presented in this paper. When a single-phase H-bridge inverter is connected, the double-frequency oscillation from the feedback path is suppressed by proper parameter design, while the transient response of dc-bus voltage can be further improved by the NDO-based load current feedforward with a notch filter in the feedforward path. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has become a very attractive solution for interfacing high voltages in hybrid networks. The MMC enables scalability to different power levels, full controllability provided by insulated-gate bipolar transistors, and can achieve very high efficiencies by using a low-switching-frequency method as the nearest level modulation. However, the nearest level modulation requires a capacitor voltage-balancing algorithm, which can result in unbalanced loading for the power semiconductors in the different submodules. Particularly at low-power-factor operation, which could occur in the case of low-voltage ride through and of reactive power injection, the conventional algorithm is no more effective. This paper provides thermal stress analysis of the MMC in operation and proposes a thermal balancing approach, which is embedded in the capacitor voltage-balancing algorithm. The purpose of the thermal balancing is to achieve similar stress distribution among the different submodules to enhance the lifetime. The junction temperatures in the different submodules are studied for HVDC applications, and this paper proves experimentally that the thermal balance within the submodules is significantly improved. In this paper, a voltage balance control strategy based on dual active bridge (DAB) dc/dc converters in a power electronic traction transformer (PETT) is proposed. Based on this strategy, the output-parallel DAB converters can be equivalent to an input-series-output-parallel system. Furthermore, a PETT starting control method is put forward, which can effectively avoid risks of overcurrent and overvoltage in the PETT starting process. In order to carry out the controller design and system stability analysis, three different kinds of mathematical models of DAB converters are set up. The first model is related to a single DAB converter, the second model reflects the equivalent relation between an output-parallel DAB system and a single DAB converter in terms of the output-voltage control loop, and the third model indicates that the voltage balance control system based on DAB converters is a multiinput-multioutput system. Due to the nonzero off-diagonal elements of the controlled plant, there is a mutual effect between different control loops, which is defined as “interaction” in the multivariable feedback control theory. The stability of the voltage balance control system is made up of two parts, including the stability of each single-input-single-output (SISO) control loop and the influence of the interaction on the system stability. The research is carried out to measure the intensity of the interaction in this paper, and a criterion directly based on the controlled plant is proposed to predict the influence of the interaction, which can obviously simplify the system stability analysis. Considering the particular traction onboard application, a new control structure toward the voltage balance controller is introduced. Based on the new structure, the controller is designed and the stability of the SISO system is analyzed. Finally, a five-cell PETT prototype with rated power of 30 kW is taken to carry out further research, and the experiment results verify the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed algorithms. The performance of a standard model predictive controller (MPC) is directly related to its predictive model. If there are unmodeled periodic disturbances in the actual system, MPC will be difficult to suppress the disturbances, thus causing fluctuations of system output. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an improved MPC named predictive-integral-resonant control (PIRC). Compared with the standard MPC, the proposed PIRC could enhance the suppression ability for disturbances by embedding the internal model composing of the integral and resonant loop. Furthermore, this paper applies the proposed PIRC to PMSM drives, and proposes the PMSM control strategy based on the cascaded PIRC, which could suppress periodic disturbances caused by the dead time effects, current sampling errors, and so on. The experimental results show that the PIRC can suppress periodic disturbances in the drive system, thus ensuring good current and speed performance. Voltage ripple in single-phase ac–dc converters is usually disregarded to design the dc-link voltage control system, since large dc-link electrolytic capacitors are typically employed. However, replacement of electrolytic capacitors by film capacitors has been widely considered for increasing reliability. Consequently, due to cost constraints, such replacement usually employ low capacitance and may be combined with fast dc-bus voltage controllers. This paper shows that the conventional linear time-invariant (LTI) model may not represent the real converter behavior for reduced capacitance and/or faster controllers, leading to poor system performance or even instability. In this way, for any of these cases, the linear time-periodic (LTP) model is highly encouraged for stability and transient analysis as a tool for the controller design. Experimental results confirm that stability margins are precisely obtained from the LTP model but may not from the LTI model. Finally, this paper also compares both LTI and LTP models while considering the control gain and the dc-bus capacitance size. The performance of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) in medium-voltage applications, where the number of required submodules is not high, can be improved utilizing low switching frequency modulations such as (2N+1) selective harmonic elimination-pulse width modulation (SHE-PWM), which provides tight control of lower order harmonics and low switching losses. This paper proposes a calculation method, which is based on a novel formulation, to solve the SHE-PWM problem. In particular, MMCs with (2N+1) phase output voltage levels are considered, obtaining a (2N+1) SHE-PWM waveform. This method utilizes a unique system of equations that is valid for any possible waveform. Therefore, it is able to calculate simultaneously, without predefined waveforms, both the switching patterns and the associated firing angles that solve the (2N+1) SHE-PWM problem. Consequently, the search process is simplified and optimized. Furthermore, this paper also proposes a circulating current control technique, which can be applied along with (2N+1) SHE-PWM without disturbing the phase output voltage. Simulation results and experimental tests obtained with a single-phase laboratory prototype prove the validity of the novel (2N+1) SHE-PWM implementation method and the proposed circulating current control technique. This paper proposes a battery simulator (BS) based on a Z-source rectifier (ZSR), with the intention of emulating the discharge or charge characteristic of an actual lithium-polymer battery with high voltage and large capacity. The proposed BS is used for power testing for battery applications. The battery model, combined with a Shepherd model and a Thevenin model, is adopted to freely change the properties and specifications of the battery and to replicate the dynamic behavior of the battery, which is discretized to utilize the digital controller of the BS. The closed-loop voltage controller at the dc side of the ZSR is designed to emulate the rapid dynamic characteristics of the battery based on small-signal methods, considering the influence of the components of the impedance network. In this paper, battery voltage control algorithm (BVCA) is also utilized to minimize the voltage stress across switches while controlling two dc-side voltages within a wide range of output voltages. This article is the continuation of graph sets method (GSM) proposed in the companion paper Part I for deriving equations and analyzing multicoil wireless power transfer multicoil (MC) wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. After explaining GSM, categorizing WPT coils into three different types, and proposing some approximation techniques in Part I, this article, as the second part of this work, presents numerical simulations and experimental results for a three-coil MCWPT system similar to what is explained in Part I. The simulations are conducted in MATLAB/Simulink and ANSYS environments, and for the experimental model, three ferriteless cylindrical coils are built and compensated to behave as voltage driven, current driven, and passive coils, respectively, at the specific frequency of 200 kHz. After analyzing and comparing the simulation and experimental results, it is shown that GSM can be an effective and illustrative technique that facilitates comprehensive analysis of interactions amongst the coils and their characteristics, especially when WPT systems contain multiple coils. The high fault-tolerant ability of multiphase drives is favored in safety-critical applications. Under open-phase faults, to guarantee ripple-free torque, stator current references should be revised. In this paper, a global fault-tolerant control strategy based on an online current optimization algorithm (OCOA) is proposed for symmetrical multiphase machines (SMMs) to achieve both the maximal torque production range (TPR) and minimal stator winding losses under all possible OPFs. The OCOA can calculate the minimum losses current references covering the full TPR online, regardless of the number and locations of faulty phases. With the online-optimized references, ripple-free torque and minimum losses in full TPR can be achieved under faulty conditions. Additionally, the proposed method can be adopted to SMMs with arbitrary phase numbers. Simulation and experiments demonstrate that the online optimization can be completed in a short time, meanwhile, achieves the same TPR and loss reduction compared with an existing offline strategy based on prestored look-up tables. Due to the flexible online calculation ability and excellent extensibility, the proposed method is especially favored in modular multiphase converters and machines with high phase numbers, where converters can adapt to machines with different phase numbers or the number of possible faulty conditions can be extremely large. This paper presents a simplified hierarchical energy balance control method for a modular multilevel matrix converter (M3C) operating as a frequency changer (50–50/3 Hz) for low-frequency ac transmission system. The proposed method employs an independent energy balance control for each subconverter of the M3C with only injecting the output frequency circulating current, aiming at balancing the energy among the three arms of the subconverter. Then, the modulation technique is redesigned to balance the energy among n submodules within each arm. The proposed method simplifies the computational complexity of the M3C by considering the subconverter independently, enabling an easy and efficient way to control the M3C. The feasibility of the proposed method is evaluated with normal and dynamic operation, which includes step changes in the output frequency and voltage. This paper proposes a small-signal model and Floquet-theory-based method for analyzing small-signal stability of a single-phase asymmetric cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (ACHMI) operating in the stand-alone mode. The studied ACHMI system consists of the power stage and cascaded control loops, which includes the voltage loop in the synchronous reference frame (SRF), capacitor current feedback control, and hybrid modulation scheme. Due to the SRF voltage control, the derived small-signal model under linear and nonlinear load conditions are inherently periodically time-variant. Therefore, the Floquet theory is employed to analyze the stability regions of the dual-loop control parameters of the ACHMI. Furthermore, the loci and moduli of Floquet multipliers are calculated to accurately evaluate the respective effects of control parameters on the stability of the system. With the stability analysis based on the small-signal model and Floquet-theory-based method, an effective selection range of control parameters of the multilevel inverter can be obtained. Finally, the experimental results from a reduced-scale laboratory prototype ACHMI are presented to validate the theoretical analysis, and the effectiveness of proposed analysis method in high-power applications is verified by the simulation results from a 10-kV medium-voltage ACHMI. An electrical transient model (ETM) of insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)-diode switching cell is developed by coupling a temperature-dependent IGBT model with power loss model. The nonlinear behavior of IGBT and the reverse recovery characteristic of the diode are considered in this model to simulate the transient switching waveforms. Based on the transient waveforms of ETM under various operating conditions, the power loss estimation method (PLEM) for IGBT is developed. In addition to traditional modeling techniques that only uses ideal switch, this paper uses the model to replicate the power loss behaviors of semiconductor devices in circuit simulation by looking up tables. The proposed ETM is simulated in PSCAD/EMTDC with nanosecond time step, whereas the overall system application can be simulated with conventional time step in range of microsecond. By this way, the model can promise reasonable accuracy as well as an acceptable fast solving speed. The proposed ETM and PLEM have been implemented in PSCAD/EMTDC simulator and validated by experimental results using a double pulse test bench and boost converter test platform. In this paper, a novel current solution is proposed to suppress the electromagnetic torque ripple of brushless dc motor (BLDCM), and simultaneously minimize the rotor eddy-current loss to prevent thermal demagnetization of the permanent magnets. To determine the current solution, an optimizing problem of the rotor loss is developed, subjecting to the constraints of average torque and the sixth harmonic torque. Finite dc supply is also considered. In addition, an improved model of the rotor loss is proposed with a simpler expression of quadratic form, so that the problem can be solved analytically. A comparison with the square-wave and minimal-copper-loss current solutions is studied based on a 3.77 kW, 12000 r/min BLDCM, which indicates that the proposed solution performs as well as the two solutions in suppressing the torque ripple and producing stator losses, but the rotor loss can be significantly reduced by at least 86% and 35%, respectively. Finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) calculates torque and flux tracking errors via a cost function that is used for selecting the optimal vector. Compared with field oriented control, FCS-MPC has the merit of a faster dynamic performance because it eliminates both pulsewidth modulation and inner proportion-integration controllers. However, the weighting factor for modifying torque and flux terms must be tuned in accordance with varying operating conditions; this is an area in which further research is needed. In this paper, a parallel predictive torque control (PPTC) with predefined constraints is proposed as a solution for this problem. The PPTC method optimizes torque and flux terms simultaneously, and switching-state candidates are then selected in an adaptive mechanism. The key feature is that torque and flux tracking errors are constrained within the initial boundaries. The proposed PPTC is compared with the state-of-the-art predictive torque control (PTC) method. Both simulation and experimental results confirm that the proposed method, which has no weighting factor, achieves an even better dynamic performance and robustness than the conventional PTC. The use of three-dimensional (3D) thermal simulations of magnetic components for power converters is limited to validation of final designs due to time consumption. A two-step homogenization is proposed to simplify them, while keeping good accuracy. The required equations and some guidelines are described in this paper. It can be applied to solid round wire, litz wire, or foil wound magnetic components. Considerations to extend its use to transformers, including the use of interleaving techniques and insulating tape, are explained. This method can reduce the computation time of 3-D simulations (seven times faster than usual simulations) while the convergence is assured even for complex structures or cases with litz wire. A Luenberger disturbance observer based control scheme for surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) is proposed in this paper. First, an extended SPMSM model is given by considering the external disturbances and parameter mismatches. Second, a Luenberger observer is introduced to estimate the lumped disturbances in the speed and current loops, respectively. Third, based on the observed disturbances, a speed controller is designed, which is proved to be stable. Finally, an improved deadbeat-based predictive current control (DPCC) based on the estimated disturbances and the new SPMSM model is designed to control the current loop. The proposed method is implemented on a Xilinx Zynq SoC XC7Z020-CLG484-1 and field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementations of the improved DPCC and conventional DPCC are compared and analyzed in detail in terms of area utilization and time consumption. Although the execution time of both methods is very short, the improved DPCC takes less time than the conventional DPCC due to the parallel processing capabilities of FPGAs. For stable and efficient drives of interior permanent-magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs), stator flux should be observed across a wide speed range. However, distortions such as a dc offset and low-order harmonics are contained in the estimated flux due to various reasons. In this paper, a distortion-minimizing flux observer is proposed to suppress the effects of dc offset and harmonics by implementing frequency-adaptive observers. The proposed frequency-adaptive flux observer is designed to extract a fundamental flux while keeping a simple structure even if the rotating speed of the IPMSM varies. The fundamental flux could be estimated by the proposed current- and voltage-model based flux observer, which is implemented with the frequency-adaptive observer and harmonic extractors. Moreover, parameter sensitivity and model transition are discussed to improve the performance of the proposed observers.
