This paper describes a flow control of the dye in the paper mill with the quasi-Z-source indirect matrix converter (QZSIMC) fed induction motor drive. More than a decade the voltage-source inverter (VSI) and current-source inverter (CSI) have been used to control the speed of the induction motor, which in turns controls the flow of dye. Recently, the matrix converter (MC) has been an excellent competitor for the VSI or CSI for its compactness. The voltage transfer ratio of the VSI, CSI, and MC has been limited to 0.866. Thus, the efficiency of these converters is less. To improve the voltage transfer ratio the quasi-Z-source network (QZSN) is to be used between voltage source and indirect MC (IMC). The modification in the shoot-through duty ratio of the QZSN varies the voltage transfer ratio greater than 0.866. Different voltage transfer ratios are needed for different voltage sag conditions. For a variation of the duty ratio of the QZSN, the fuzzy logic controller has been presented. To control the IMC vector control with space vector modulation has been presented. This paper proposes the implementation of QZSIMC adjustable speed drive for the flow control of dye in paper mill during different voltage sag conditions. A 4-kW prototype has been built and the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified with simulation results and experimental setup. Simulation is done in MATLAB, Simulink platform. Experimental setup is done with the aid of a TMS320F2812 (Texas Instrument) processor. The experimental results validate the maintenance of the speed of an induction motor at the set condition, thus controlling the perfect flow of dye in paper manufacturing technology. This paper presents a novel seven-level inverter topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. It consists of eight active switches and two inner flying capacitor (FC) units forming a similar structure as in a conventional active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter. This unique arrangement reduces the number of active and passive components. A simple modulation technique reduces cost and complexity in the control system design without compromising reactive power capability. In addition, compared to major conventional seven-level inverter topologies, such as the neutral point clamped, FC, cascaded H-bridge, and ANPC topologies, the new topology reduces the dc-link voltage requirement by 50%. This recued dc-link voltage makes the new topology appealing for various industrial applications. Experimental results from a 2.2-kVA prototype are presented to support the theoretical analysis presented in this paper. There have been several advanced topologies proposed by the community for micro-inverter applications. However, many such applications suffer from unwanted second-order harmonic current ripple at dc input. Moreover, in the absence of suitable passive filter or ripple compensator, the second-order harmonics ripple may propagate into the dc source. This results in several problems to the system, related to system efficiency, life, cost, size, reliability, and stability. This paper proposes an adaptive sliding-mode controller to shape the output impedance of the boost-circuit of quasi-switched boost inverter such that the propagation of the ripple from dc link to the dc-input source is resisted. The quasi-switched boost inverter is one of the advanced and suitable topologies for the micro-inverter applications. The adaptive nature of the proposed controller improves the transient performance of the system at the line–load transients unlike some existing solutions, which affects dynamics adversely to achieve ripple mitigation objective. This paper presents new space vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategies for a single-phase three-level buck-boost neutral point clamped inverter coupled with impedance-source (IS) network. These strategies can be implemented for systems with any IS network with neutral point. The case study system is based on the quasi-Z-source inverter with continuous input current. To demonstrate an improved performance, the strategies are compared with a traditional PWM strategy. The advantages lie in reduced switching number, without output voltage quality distortion. In this paper, a novel space-vector pulsewidth modulation technique for a five-level active neutral-point clamped (5L-ANPC) inverter is proposed to eliminate the common-mode voltage (CMV). For the 5L-ANPC inverter, which produces a good output voltage performance and lowdv/dt, the total 125 voltage vectors can be generated, among which the proposed scheme employs only 19 voltage vectors producing a zero CMV. Due to the limitation of voltage vectors selected, the dc-link capacitor voltages of the 5L-ANPC inverter cannot be balanced by themselves. Therefore, the capacitor voltages of the inverter should be controlled by choosing the redundant switching states appropriately. In order to solve the neutral-point voltage unbalancing problem for three-level inverters, this paper proposes a method to balance the neutral-point voltage for three-level inverters with variable modulation wave offset sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) control. Based on the mathematical expressions of neutral-point voltage unbalancing, the factors are studied, which affect the fluctuation of neutral-point voltage. Theoretically the mathematical expressions of the neutral-point voltage with the proposed method are derived, and the mathematical relationship between the fluctuation of neutral-point voltage and the adjusting offset of modulation wave is studied. This proposed method realizes controlling the neutral-point voltage balance by dynamically calculating the offset superimposed to the modulation wave based on SPWM (DCOSPWM). This DCOSPWM method is very simple, which has good steady-state performance and is easy for digital implementation. The simulation results verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis in this paper, and the feasibility and effectiveness of this method is verified by the experiments in the experimental platform of neutral point clamped three-level inverters based on digital signal processor (DSP)-complex programmable logic device (CPLD). The simple boost control (SBC) method is usually used to control the shoot-through state in a single-phase single-stage quasi-switched boost inverter (qSBI). This paper proposes a new pulse-width modulation (PWM) control scheme to improve the modulation index for the qSBI. The advantages of the proposed method for the qSBI over the conventional SBC method are as follows: 1) the modulation index is larger; 2) the voltage stress on the capacitor, diodes, and switches is reduced significantly; 3) the high-frequency peak-to-peak inductor current and capacitor voltage ripples are smaller; 4) the shoot-through current is lower; and 5) the efficiency is higher. The operating principles and circuit analysis for the proposed PWM control scheme are shown. To verify the performance of the proposed PWM control method, a 400W prototype was built with a 110 V/50 Hz output voltage. The experimental results matched those of the theoretical analysis. Four-level nested neutral-point clamped (NNPC) inverters experience severe voltage balancing problems under low output-frequency conditions when the conventional four-level space vector modulation (4L-SVM) technique is applied, which limits their wider application. In order to get a complete control of the flying-capacitor voltages, and to alleviate the calculation burden of conventional 4L-SVM, a simplified but effective 4L-SVM technique along with the voltage balance control (VBC) function is proposed in this paper. For low modulation indexes, zero and small vectors are selectively utilized and distributed to force the average charging and discharging time of flying capacitors to be equal to each other during every switching period, so that voltage ripples are greatly reduced to be within an acceptable level under low output-frequency conditions. For high modulation indexes, the simplification of conventional 4L-SVM for NNPC inverters into two-level SVM is proposed to reduce the computation complexity. Principles of the proposed 4L-SVM and VBC are elaborated in detail. The steady-state, transient-state, and VBC performances are investigated and compared with the case where the conventional 4L-SVM is applied. In this paper, the properties and operation of the virtual-space-vector pulse-width modulation (PWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter with unbalanced dc-links are studied. By quantitatively analyzing the characteristics of the revised space-vector diagram (SVD) with unbalanced dc-links, the defined virtual SVD (VSVD) for the unbalanced case is theoretically proven identical to the VSVD of the conventional virtual-space-vector PWM (VSVPWM) strategy with balanced dc-links. The well-developed and fast-processing methods to calculate the durations of the nearest three virtual vectors for the conventional VSVPWM can be directly utilized. In addition, a control strategy to realize the asymmetric control of the dc-link voltages with VSVPWM is also studied, and this method can adjust the unbalancing degree with a high accuracy for any modulation indexes and load power factors. Z-source inverter provides a competitive single-stage dc–ac power conversion with the capability of both buck and boost voltage regulation. In order to maximize voltage gain and to increase efficiency, this paper proposes an improved pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategy. By adjusting the shoot-through duty ratio of one-phase leg, it regulates the average value of intermediate dc-link voltage, which is the same as the instantaneous maximum of three-phase line voltage in one switching time period (Ts) . And the other two-phase legs maintain the fixed switching states. Thus, the equivalent switching frequency of power devices in the inverter bridge is reduced to 1/ 3fs (fs is the frequency corresponding to Ts). The operating principles and closed-loop controller design are analyzed and verified by simulation and experiments. Compared with the existing PWM strategies, the improved PWM (IPWM) strategy demonstrates higher efficiency under full operation range of low voltage gain (1.27-2) application. However, with the IPWM strategy, the inductor current and capacitor voltage contain six-time-line-frequency ripples, which consequently require large size of the passive components when the output frequency is very low. Thus, it is also suitable for 400–800-Hz medium frequency aircraft and vessel power supply system due to a relatively high output line frequency. In signal injection sensorless drives, the injection voltage cannot be reduced under a certain value. The lower limit of the injection voltage is mainly enforced by the inverter nonlinearity that causes distortion of the injection voltage and degradation of the position estimation performance. After analyzing the inverter nonlinearity during the voltage injection, it is revealed that parasitic capacitances of insulated-gate bipolar transistors have positive effects on inverter output linearity and sensorless control. Based on this analysis, this paper proposes a method to reduce the injection voltage by connecting additional capacitors to the output terminals of the inverter. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed idea. In the experiments, using the capacitor-integrated inverter, it is shown that the injection voltage can be reduced by more than half without degrading the position estimation performance. This paper presents the high-performance quasi-Z-source series resonant dc–dc converter as a candidate topology for the photovoltaic module-level power electronics applications. The converter features a wide input voltage and load regulation range thanks to the multimode operation, i.e., when the shoot-through pulse width modulation and phase-shift modulation are combined in a single switching stage to realize the boost and buck operating modes, respectively. Our experiments confirmed that the proposed converter is capable of ensuring ripple-free 400 V output voltage within the sixfold variation of the input voltage (from 10 to 60 V). Diode-assisted buck–boost voltage-source inverter achieves high voltage gain by introducing a switch-capacitor based high step-up dc–dc circuit between the dc source and inverter bridge. As for the unique structure, various pulse width modulation (PWM) strategies are developed with regard to the chopped intermediate dc-link voltage. In order to maximize voltage gain and increase efficiency, this paper proposes a novel PWM strategy. It regulates the average value of intermediate dc-link voltage in one switching time period ( Ts) the same as the instantaneous maximum value of three-phase line voltage by controlling the front boost circuit. Then, the equivalent switching frequency of power devices in the inverter bridge can be reduced to 1/3fs (fs = 1/Ts). The operating principle and closed-loop controller design are analyzed and verified by simulations and experiments. Compared with existing PWM strategies, the new control strategy demonstrates less power device requirement and higher efficiency in high voltage gain applications. It is a more competitive topology for wide range dc/ac voltage regulation in renewable energy applications. This paper investigates the problem of fluctuation of the neutral-point potential (NPP) in a three-level NPC inverter with a capacitor-voltage loop. The phase pulse width duty cycle disturbance pulse width modulation (PWM) method is proposed to suppress the NPP fluctuation efficiently. Based on the basic carrier-based phase-disposition PWM method, the average pulse neutral-point current model is established. Then, the frequency, amplitude, and equivalent initial phase of the NPP fluctuation are analyzed based on the current model. According to the alternating error of the dc-link capacitor voltages, a capacitor-voltage loop with a quasi-proportional resonant (PR) controller is presented. The control variable, which varies with the modulation index, phase current, load power factor, etc., can be obtained from the quasi-PR controller. With increasing penetration of the renewable energy, the grid-tied PWM inverters need to take corresponding responsibilities for the security and stability of future grid, behaving like conventional rotational synchronous generator (RSG). Therefore, recognizing the inherent relationship and intrinsic differences between inverters and RSGs is essential for such target. By modeling the typical electromechanical transient of grid-tied PWM inverters, this paper first proves that PWM inverters and RSGs are similar in physical mechanism and equivalent in mathematical model, and the concept of static synchronous generator (SSG) is thereby developed. Furthermore, the comprehensive comparison between RSG and SSG is carried out in detail, and their inherent relation is built. Based on these findings, the rationality and feasibility of migrating the concepts, tools, and methods of RSG stability analysis to investigate the dynamic behaviors and stability issues of SSG is therefore confirmed. Taking stability issues as an example, the criteria of small signal and transient stability of a typical grid-tied PWM inverter is put forward to demonstrate the significance of the developed SSG model (including synchronizing coefficient, damping coefficient, inertia constant, and power-angle curve), providing clear physical interpretation on the dynamic characteristics and stability issues. Four-level hybrid-clamped (4L-HC) inverter is a newly proposed topology which is suitable for high-performance medium-voltage drives. Each phase of this topology consists of eight switches and a flying capacitor and the dc-link is split into three parts by two neutral points. In order to ensure the topology operating properly, the voltages across the flying capacitors and three dc-link capacitors should be controlled and maintain balanced at their nominal values. This paper presents a decoupled voltage balancing method for this 4L-HC inverter, including the voltage balancing of dc-link capacitors and flying capacitors. A modified phase-shifted pulse-width modulation method is used to regulate the voltages of flying capacitors and the central dc-link capacitor. The relationship between the neutral-point currents and the output voltage is studied and the upper and lower dc-link capacitor voltages are balanced by injecting an optimum zero-sequence voltage. This paper proposes a new five-level voltage source inverter for medium-voltage high-power applications. The proposed inverter is based on the upgrade of a four-level nested neutral-point clamped converter. This inverter can operate over a wide range of voltages without the need for connecting power semiconductor in series, has high-quality output voltage and fewer components compared to other classic five-level topologies. The purpose of neutral-point voltage balancing algorithms in the three-level neutral-point clamped (3L-NPC) topology is to eliminate the voltage unbalance of top- and bottom-side dc-link voltages (neutral-point voltage). These algorithms are divided into dc unbalance and ac unbalance compensation methods. The dc unbalance causes distortion of output currents; therefore, this problem has to be solved. The ac unbalance implies that there is an ac ripple in the top- and bottom-side dc-link voltages. In applications using 3L-NPC topology, a large dc-link capacitor value is required to mitigate this ac unbalance problem. As a result, the size and the cost of applications become large and expensive. In this paper, a compensation method for mitigating the ac unbalance of the neutral-point voltage is proposed, which causes the dc-link capacitor value to be small, when a carrier-based pulse width modulation method is applied. The proposed method compensates the ac unbalance of the neutral-point voltage by adding an optimal compensation value to the reference duty signals. This compensation value is calculated simply by currents and reference duty signals. A capacitor voltage-balancing method for a nested neutral point clamped (NNPC) inverter is proposed in this paper. The NNPC inverter is a newly developed four-level voltage-source inverter for medium-voltage applications with properties such as operating over a wide range of voltages (2.4–7.2 kV) without the need for connecting power semiconductor in series and high-quality output voltage. The NNPC topology has two flying capacitors in each leg. In order to ensure that the inverter can operate normally and all switching devices share identical voltage stress, the voltage across each capacitor should be controlled and maintained at one-third of dc bus voltage. The proposed capacitor voltage-balancing method takes advantage of redundancy in phase switching states to control and balance flying capacitor voltages. Simple and effective logic tables are developed for the balancing control. The proposed method is easy to implement and needs very few computations. Single-phase power conversion such as pulse width modulation rectifier, grid connected PV inverter system, static synchronous compensator all can be implemented by an H-bridge inverter and a large electrolytic dc capacitor to absorb the ripple power pulsating at twice the line frequency (2ω ripple power). This paper proposed a dc capacitor-less inverter for H-bridge with minimum voltage and current stress. By adding another phase leg to control an ac capacitor, the 2ω ripple power can be absorbed by the capacitor and theoretically 2ω ripples to the dc capacitor can be eliminated completely. The H-bridge and the addition phase leg can be analyzed together as an unbalanced three phase system. By adopting space-vector pulse width modulation control and choosing the optimum ac capacitance and the voltage reference, the voltage and current stress of the switches can be minimized to the same as the conventional H-bridge. The size of capacitor is reduced by ten times compared to the conventional H-bridge system. Mainstream inverters have inductive output impedance at low frequencies (such inverters are called L-inverters). In this paper, a control strategy is proposed to make the output impedance of an inverter capacitive at low frequencies (such inverters are called C-inverters). The proposed control strategy involves the feedback of the inductor current through an integrator, which is actually the impedance of a virtual capacitor. The gain of the integrator or the virtual capacitance is first selected to guarantee the stability of the current feedback loop and then optimized to minimize the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage. Moreover, some guidelines are developed to facilitate the selection of the filter components for C-inverters. Simulation and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the feasibility and excellent performance of C-inverters, with the filter parameters of the test rig selected according to the guidelines developed. It is shown that, with the same hardware, the lowest voltage THD is obtained when the inverter is designed to be a C-inverter. A by product of this study is that, as long as the current ripples are kept within the desired range, the filter inductor should be chosen as small as possible in order to reduce voltage harmonics. This paper proposed an improved phase disposition pulse width modulation (PDPWM) for a modular multilevel inverter which is used for Photovoltaic grid connection. This new modulation method is based on selective virtual loop mapping, to achieve dynamic capacitor voltage balance without the help of an extra compensation signal. The concept of virtual submodule (VSM) is first established, and by changing the loop mapping relationships between the VSMs and the real submodules, the voltages of the upper/lower arm's capacitors can be well balanced. This method does not requiring sorting voltages from highest to lowest, and just identifies the MIN and MAX capacitor voltage's index which makes it suitable for a modular multilevel converter with a large number of submodules in one arm. Compared to carrier phase-shifted PWM (CPSPWM), this method is more easily to be realized in field-programmable gate array and has much stronger dynamic regulation ability, and is conducive to the control of circulating current. Ideally, the inner (the upper or lower arm) current of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) is ideally assumed to be the sum of a dc component and an ac component of the fundamental frequency. However, as ac current flows through the submodule (SM) capacitors, the capacitor voltages fluctuate with time. Consequently, the inner current is usually distorted and the peak/RMS value of it is increased compared with the theoretical value. The increased currents will increase power losses and may threaten the safe operation of the power devices and capacitors. This paper proposes a closed-loop method for suppression of the inner current in an MMC. This method is very simple and is implemented in a stationary frame, and no harmonic extraction algorithm is needed. Hence, it can be applied to single-phase or three-phase MMCs. Besides, this method does not influence the balancing of the SM capacitor voltages. Hybrid cascade multilevel inverters combine semiconductor devices of different voltage ratings and technologies, which theoretically allow high efficiency to be achieved. The bottlenecks of these topologies are, however, the need for isolated supplies for the cells and the lack of modularity. This paper focuses on the design and control of high-resolution, high-efficiency multilevel inverters with simplified dc power supplies. It introduces several rules for systematically designing the dc voltages of the cells, for which all unsupplied capacitor voltages can be regulated. Six classes of inverters are obtained covering single- and three-phase, staircase and pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) inverters. New configurations of hybrid cascade multilevel inverters are obtained for each class. A double modulation strategy with two different frequencies is proposed that allows switching losses of PWM inverters to be reduced. Decoupled mechanisms are proposed for the total and internal energy balances. It is shown how to make the design robust by taking into account conversion losses and large dc-voltage imbalances in the design and control. An analysis of the maximum voltage utilization and efficiency of the resulting configurations is carried out. It is important to improve the overall efficiency of a photovoltaic (PV) inverter when it is connected to the grid. Fundamentally, the conversion efficiency from dc to ac power of an inverter is important. However, in the presence of partial shading, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) on PV modules is more important than the conversion efficiency. In this paper, a new control method for a three-level inverter is proposed. With the proposed method, each dc-link voltage of the three-level inverter can be asymmetrically regulated. When PV modules are split into two and each split module is connected to the respective dc-link capacitors of the inverter, the asymmetric control can be helpful because separate MPPTs are possible. The effectiveness of the proposed method was examined through experiments with a T-type three-level inverter, where each dc-link capacitor was supplied by a PV simulator emulating two separate PV modules under different shading conditions. In this paper, an improved pulse width modulation (PWM) method for chopper-cell (or half-bridge)based modular multilevel converters (MMCs) is proposed. This method can generate an output voltage with maximally 2N+1 (where N is the number of submodules in the upper or lower arm of MMC) levels, which is as great as that of the carrier-phase-shifted PWM (CPSPWM) method. However, no phase-shifted carrier is needed. Compared with the existing submodule unified pulse width modulated (SUPWM) method, the level number of the output voltage is almost doubled and the height of the step in the staircase voltage is reduced by 50%. Meanwhile, the equivalent switching frequency in the output voltage is twice that of the conventional SUPWM method. All these features lead to much reduced harmonic content in the output voltage. What is more, the voltages of the submodule capacitors can be well balanced without any close-loop voltage balancing controllers which are mandatory in the CPSPWM schemes.
