This paper presents a voltage-controlled distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM)-based voltage regulator for low-voltage distribution grids. The voltage regulator is designed to temporarily meet the grid code, postponing unplanned investments while a definitive solution could be planned to solve regulation issues. The power stage is composed of a three-phase four-wire voltage-source inverter and a second-order low-pass filter. The control strategy has three output voltage loops with active damping and two dc bus voltage loops. In addition, two loops are included to the proposed control strategy: the concept of minimum power point tracking (mPPT) and the frequency loop. The mPPT allows the voltage regulator to operate at the minimum power point, avoiding the circulation of unnecessary reactive compensation. The frequency loop allows the voltage regulator to be independent of the grid voltage information, especially the grid angle, using only the information available at the point-of-common coupling. Experimental results show the regulation capacity, the features of the mPPT algorithm for linear and nonlinear loads, and the frequency stability. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Starting with a brief review on the existing methods of impedance emulation, this paper addresses a general and systematic approach to programmable and reconfigurable emulation of power impedances. The proposed approach not only enables the impedance value to be programed, but also allows the characteristics (i.e., type) of the impedance to be reconfigured instantly during the operation. Based on the proposed control method, emulation of at least six types of emulated power impedances (EPI) can be easily attained. In particular, it is theoretically and practically demonstrated that the impedance characteristic can be emulated through a combination of different functions. The systematic derivation of these functions is explained. New techniques that compensate the circuit power losses are introduced. This general approach has been practically verified in several EPI. Both steady-state and dynamic performance of these EPI confirm the programmability and reconfigurability. It is envisaged that the proposed method can be applied to a range of functions, such as power filtering, energy storage, and even power conversion based on direct impedance control. A modular and scalable voltage-regulation structure for enhancing service continuity and flexibly changing the system power rating is proposed. The methodology is based on paralleling multiple series-voltage compensators, namely multiparallel-connected series-voltage compensator (MSVC), to regulate the load voltage. The output voltage of each compensator is controlled locally by adjusting the phase angle of the output voltage of the inverter in each compensator, while the output current of each compensator is coupled to two adjacent compensators via two coupling transformers. The coupling transformers form a daisy-chained structure. The load current can be shared near-equally among the compensators through the transformer structure. The operating principle, steady-state and transient current-sharing characteristics of the architecture will be discussed and illustrated. A simplified design procedure will be given. A 3-kVA MSVC test bed with three parallel-connected single-phase compensator units has been built and evaluated. The response of the MSVC system with each compensator unit engaged and disengaged momentarily will be investigated. This paper presents a transformerless static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) system based on multilevel H-bridge converter with star configuration. This proposed control methods devote themselves not only to the current loop control but also to the dc capacitor voltage control. With regards to the current loop control, a nonlinear controller based on the passivity-based control (PBC) theory is used in this cascaded structure STATCOM for the first time. As to the dc capacitor voltage control, overall voltage control is realized by adopting a proportional resonant controller. Clustered balancing control is obtained by using an active disturbances rejection controller. Individual balancing control is achieved by shifting the modulation wave vertically which can be easily implemented in a field-programmable gate array. Two actual H-bridge cascaded STATCOMs rated at 10 kV 2 MVA are constructed and a series of verification tests are executed. The experimental results prove that H-bridge cascaded STATCOM with the proposed control methods has excellent dynamic performance and strong robustness. This paper presents implementation of distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) using kernel incremental metalearning algorithm (KIMEL) control algorithm. It demonstrates the functions of DSTATCOM such as reactive power compensation, harmonics elimination, and load balancing under linear and nonlinear loads with its self-supporting dc-bus voltage. The proposed control algorithm based on KIMEL is applied for extraction of fundamental active and reactive power components of load currents that are required for estimation of reference supply currents. These reference supply currents are used for gating pulses generation using indirect current control principle. A DSTATCOM with features of self-supporting dc bus (capacitor) is developed using DSP (dSPACE-1104), and the response of proposed control algorithm is studied under various operating conditions and found satisfactory. This paper presents a new multilevel selective harmonic elimination pulse-width modulation (MSHE-PWM) technique for transformerless static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) system employing cascaded H-bridge inverter (CHI) configuration. The proposed MSHE-PWM method optimizes both the dc-voltage levels and the switching angles, enabling more harmonics to be eliminated without affecting the structure of the inverter circuit. The method provides constant switching angles and linear pattern of dc-voltage levels over the modulation index range. This in turns eliminates the tedious steps required for manipulating the offline calculated switching angles and therefore, easing the implementation of the MSHE-PWM for dynamic systems. Although the method relies on the availability of the variable dc-voltage levels which can be obtained by various topologies, however, the rapid growth and development in the field of power semiconductor devices led to produce high-efficiency dc-dc converters with a relatively high-voltage capacity and for simplicity, a buck dc-dc converter is considered in this paper. Current and voltage closed loop controllers are implemented for both the STATCOM and the buck converter to meet the reactive power demand at different loading conditions. The technique is further compared with an equivalent conventional carrier-based pulse-width modulation to illustrate its enhanced characteristics. Solid-state transformer (SST) has been regarded as one of the most important emerging technologies for traction system and smart grid application. This paper presents the system design and performance demonstration of a high-voltage SST lab prototype that works as the active grid interface in smart grid architecture. Specifically, the designs of the key components of the system, including both power stage and controller platform, are presented. In addition, the advanced control system is developed to achieve high-performance operation. Furthermore, integration issues of SST with dc microgrid are presented. Lastly, tests under different scenarios are conducted to verify the following advanced features of the presented SST technology: 1) VAR compensation; 2) voltage regulation; 3) source voltage sag operation; and 4) microgrid integration. Voltage-sourced converter (VSC)-based static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) are used for voltage regulation in transmission and distribution systems. Unlike PWM-controlled STATCOMs, angle-controlled STATCOMs are switched at line frequency to limit the system losses. In recent years, angle-controlled STATCOMs have been deployed by utilities for the purpose of transmission system voltage regulation, voltage stability improvement, and increasing operational functionality. Despite the superior feature on voltage waveform quality and efficiency, the practical angle-controlled STATCOMs suffer from the over-current (and trips) and possible saturation of the interfacing transformers caused by negative sequence current during unbalanced conditions and faults in the utility. This paper specifically proposes a control structure to improve the angle-controlled STATCOMs performance under unbalanced conditions and faults. The main improvement is a substantial decrease in the negative sequence current and dc-link voltage oscillations under power system faults by the proposed control. This eliminates the need to redesign the STACOM power components to operate under fault current and dc-link voltage oscillations. The proposed control structure is designed based on adding appropriate oscillations to the conventional angle-controller output that is the control angle by which the VSC voltage vector leads/lags the line voltage vector. Since this control structure uses two angles for controlling the VSC output voltage, it is called dual angle control (DAC). PSCAD/EMTDC and experimental results verify the validity of the proposed control structure under unbalanced system conditions and faults. The experiments were conducted on a transient network analyzer, a unique hardware-based flexible ac transmission system simulator which was designed to study system faults and transients for a 2 × 100 MVA STATCOM field installation. Pulse-width-modulated (PWM) voltage-source converters (VSCs) are gaining widespread acceptance in modern power systems. It has been shown recently that full-scale high-power PWM VSCs can induce negative electrical damping at subsynchronous frequencies. However, active reshaping of the VSC incremental output impedance to minimize the negative impacts of a VSC on subsynchronous damping is not reported. To fill out this gap, this paper presents: 1) an extended analysis of the output impedance of a PWM-based two-level VSC; and 2) more importantly, three simple and robust active reshaping techniques to maximize the positive electrical damping in the subsynchronous frequencies without affecting the converter control performance. The first reshaping technique uses the grid voltage and an active-damping controller to generate active impedance that modifies the VSC impedance in the subsynchronous range. The second reshaping technique uses an internal active damping controller to modify the dynamics of the phase-locked loop, which has significant contribution to the negative impedance of the VSC. The third reshaping technique combines the first and second techniques. The proposed active mitigation methods show excellent performance in reshaping the VSC impedance and inducing positive electrical damping to mitigate possible subsynchronous interactions between the VSC and the power network. Further, the proposed compensators show robust control performance at different output power levels of the VSC without significant impact on the converter control performance. This paper presents a transformerless static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) system based on hybrid multilevel H-bridge converter with delta configuration. This hybrid multilevel STATCOM is characterized by per-phase series connection of a high-voltage H-bridge converter operating at fundamental frequency and a low-voltage H-bridge converter operating at 5 kHz without any other circuit for dc voltage control. A new control strategy is proposed in this paper with focus on dc voltage regulation. Clustered balancing control is realized by injecting a zero-sequence current to the delta-loop, while individual voltage control is achieved by adjusting the fundamental content of ac quasi-square-waveform voltage of high-voltage converter. A downscaled experimental prototype rated at 100 V and 3 kVA is constructed in author's laboratory. Experimental results show that the hybrid multilevel STATCOM performs satisfactory not only improving efficiency and waveform quality, but also compensating reactive power and negative-sequence current while maintaining dc voltage at the given value. This paper deals with a cascaded multilevel converter which has multiple dc voltage values (multivoltage cascade converter or hybrid multilevel converter) for a 6.6-kV transformerless distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM). A control method is proposed to realize dc voltage regulation of series-connected multiple cells in the STATCOM operation, making it possible to remove dc sources from all H-bridge cells. The simplified configuration without the dc sources makes the STATCOM small and lightweight. A downscaled STATCOM model rated at 220 V and 10 kVA is built and a series of verification tests is executed. A multilevel H-bridge StatCom inherently contains redundancy in the available switching states. This paper develops a variation on the typical model predictive control scheme which is able to exploit this redundancy to simultaneously balance the H-bridge capacitor voltages, provide excellent current reference tracking, and minimize converter switching losses. The scheme consists of a dead-beat current controller that has been integrated with heuristic models of the voltage balancing and switching loss characteristics. The integration of a pulsewidth modulation scheme is also described. Simulation and experimental results are presented that confirm the correct operation of the control and modulation strategies. This paper presents a novel dc capacitor voltage balance control method for cascade multilevel static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and a general analytical method for balance control strategy. Considering that the imbalance of dc capacitor voltage is caused by the inconsistency of active power absorbed and consumed by chain, a balance control strategy based on active voltage vector superposition is proposed, in which an active voltage component is superposed to chain's output voltage to change its absorbed active power. A general analytical method based on vector analysis is also presented, by which the performance of balance control strategy can be analyzed, including stability and regulation capacity. To find out the most appropriate balance control strategy, a comparison still based on vector analysis among the proposed and other two commonly used methods is provided, from which it can be known that the proposed balance control strategy has the advantage of good stability and strong regulation capacity, and simulations are performed to prove it.
