Various methods have been presented in the past to emulate the electrical behavior of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). To meet the demands for the reliability aspect study of MMCs, this paper proposes a viable setup to emulate the thermal behavior and to investigate its feasibility for reliability testing and thermal model validation of the power modules in the MMC. The proposed mission profile emulator has three distinctive features: 1) capable of emulating and measuring the thermal stresses of power modules; 2) capable of implementing practical switching profile as a full-scale MMC; and 3) having significantly reduced requirement for dc power supply compared to existing setups used for electrical studies. Theoretical discussions, and simulations as well as the experimental results are presented to demonstrate the capability of the mission profile emulator both electrically and thermally. In this paper, an overload and short-circuit protection method is proposed for voltage source inverter-based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system. In order to achieve high reliability and availability of the UPS, short circuit and overload protection scheme are necessary. When overload or short circuit happens, using the proposed control method, the amplitude of the output current can be limited to a constant value, which can be set by the customer to avoid the destruction of the power converter, and to obtain a faster recovery performance as well. The detailed principle of the proposed protection method is discussed in this paper. It mainly contains three parts in the control diagram for current limit, first is the anti-windup in the voltage and current controllers, then the feedforward of the capacitor voltage to the current control loop, the last is the fast reset of the resonant part of the current controller when overcurrent happens. The procedure of developing the control method is also presented in the paper. Experimental results on a commercial UPS system are presented to verify the effectiveness of the control method. This paper presents a novel seven-level inverter topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. It consists of eight active switches and two inner flying capacitor (FC) units forming a similar structure as in a conventional active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter. This unique arrangement reduces the number of active and passive components. A simple modulation technique reduces cost and complexity in the control system design without compromising reactive power capability. In addition, compared to major conventional seven-level inverter topologies, such as the neutral point clamped, FC, cascaded H-bridge, and ANPC topologies, the new topology reduces the dc-link voltage requirement by 50%. This recued dc-link voltage makes the new topology appealing for various industrial applications. Experimental results from a 2.2-kVA prototype are presented to support the theoretical analysis presented in this paper. This paper presents bidirectional grid-connected modular multilevel converters (MMC) with direct digital control and division-summation processes to achieve power-injection and rectification functions. A direct digital control is developed to track current references, regulate dc-bus voltage and cell voltage, and balance the upper and lower dc-bus voltages. It can accommodate wide filter-inductance variation and take care of source voltage harmonics to achieve tight current tracking and low distortion output current. Based on the power-balance principle, the commands of arm currents can be determined directly. In this paper, the MMC configuration is introduced first, and then the control laws for current tracking and voltage regulation are derived in detail. This paper describes a dc-link voltage control method of a single-phase back-to-back cascaded H-bridge inverter (SBCI) for a medium-voltage motor drive system. The main advantage of the SBCI topology over the conventional regenerative cascaded H-bridge topology with a three-phase active front-end (AFE) is a simple system structure, which is composed of an input transformer, a power cell, a current sensor, etc. However, the challenging points of the SBCI are larger voltage ripple in the dc-link capacitor and imbalance of dc-link voltages of each phase. The asymmetric dc-link voltage of each power cells could cause unstable operation such as over-modulation due to the lack of the dc-link voltage of a particular phase and result in over-voltage or under-voltage faults. In this paper, the control strategy of the dc-link voltage for the SBCI that uses the negative-sequence voltage of the converter is described. The proposed control method is verified with a computer simulation whose target is a 6.6-kV–1.25-MW medium-voltage drive system. Also, through the experimental setup with the prototype SBCI whose power rating is 16.2 kVA, the dc-link voltage of each AFE has been controlled within a 0.5% error of its reference value at the full load. A modular multilevel converter (MMC) is regarded as a promising topology in high-voltage direct current systems. However, the MMC consists of numerous submodules (SMs) and switching devices, which lead to a considerable switching loss, and increased cost and size of the heat sink. To mitigate these issues, this paper presents a novel modulation method composed of fundamental frequency modulation (FFM) and multicarrier-based sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation schemes. The main purpose of this modulation method is the reduction of switching loss while maintaining good harmonic performance. However, the FFM scheme leads to the unbalanced capacitor voltage of each SM in the MMC. Accordingly, this paper additionally proposes the rotation method and selective voltage balancing control for SMs to ensure effective performance of the method. Nonregenerative pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) rectifiers are increasingly being considered for applications, where the power flow is unidirectional, such as power supplies for telecommunications, X-ray, the machine-side converter for wind energy conversion systems, etc. They use fewer active switches, which increase their power density and reduce cost. This paper proposes a novel reduced switch topology for a multilevel (five-level or higher) nonregenerative PWM rectifier. It uses only four controlled switches and eight diodes per phase for a five-level rectifier. Half of the diodes are naturally commutated (zero current switching) at the line frequency, which reduces switching losses. This topology has several other advantages compared to similar topologies reported in the literature, such as minimum voltage stress across the devices, elimination of transient voltage-balancing snubbers, no extra hardware for balancing the flying capacitors, the dc-link mid-point voltage, etc. In this paper, switching cycle average modeling and the carrier-based modulation strategy for this rectifier are also presented to maintain a balanced dc link and to regulate flying capacitor voltages, while achieving unity displacement factor at the rectifier input terminals. This paper proposes a new power decoupling control method for a direct ac-to-ac converter. The ac-to-ac converter consists of two half-bridge converters, two input filter capacitors, and a series-resonant circuit, which enables it to convert the single-phase line-frequency ac input to the high-frequency ac output directly. The proposed power decoupling control method stores input power pulsation at double the line frequency in the input filter capacitors. Thus, the proposed control method realizes a unity power factor in the line-frequency ac input and a constant amplitude current in the high-frequency ac output without any additional switching device or energy storage element. This paper theoretically discusses the principle and operating performance of the proposed control method and confirms the effectiveness of the proposed control method in experiments using an isolated ac-to-dc converter based on the direct ac-to-ac converter. As a result, the proposed power decoupling control method effectively improved the displacement power factor of the line-frequency ac input current to more than 0.99 and reduced the voltage ripple in the dc load to 4%. This paper proposes generation of a 15-level (14 concentric) dodecagonal voltage space vector structure (DVSVS) for a star connected induction motor drive. The proposed multilevel DVSVS is obtained by cascading two inverters, namely a primary and secondary inverter. The primary inverter is a five-level (5L) structure formed by stacking two three-level flying capacitors with individual reduced dc sources and the secondary inverter is also a 5L structure formed by cascading two capacitor-fed cascaded H-bridges (CHB). The active power is supplied by the primary inverter, while the secondary inverter acts as switched capacitor harmonics filter, and capacitors in the secondary inverter are balanced naturally irrespective of load power factor for entire modulation index. The high-voltage dc supply fed primary inverter is operated in quasi-square wave mode, while the high frequency switching is applied to low voltage CHBs, thus, reducing the overall switching loss. The proposed scheme gives the advantages of both DVSVS and multilevel structure, thus, making it one of the solutions for battery or stacked dc-fed applications. This paper proposes a single-phase power factor correction (PFC) rectifier to achieve high power factor, wide output voltage range, and ripple power decoupling without using electrolytic capacitors. It consists of two parts: PFC circuit and output voltage regulation circuit. The load side is involved in both parts, which is different from the regular two-stage conversion structure. The proposed rectifier can be directly applied to low voltage cases due to the wide output voltage range. And the decoupling capacitor voltage can be smaller than the peak grid voltage, which reduces the voltage stress. Besides, the low-frequency ripple power buffer is implemented without a dedicated power-buffering controller. A switched-capacitor-based dual-switch dc–dc converter with a high-boost voltage gain is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter can obtain a high-voltage gain with a small duty cycle, which decreases the voltage stress and the conduction loss on the power switches. This paper presents the key waveforms, the operating principles at the continuous conduction mode and the discontinuous conduction mode, and the parameter design. Moreover, a comparison between the proposed converter and other nonisolated converters has been completed. Sheppard–Taylor power factor correction (ST-PFC) rectifier could obtain a high power factor due to its capability of overcoming the control detuning issue. However, it needs a bulky electrolytic capacitor at the load side to buffer the double-frequency ripple power (DFRP), which reduces the reliability and power density significantly. This paper proposes a control method to divert the DFRP to the small energy transfer capacitor. Consequently, the bulky electrolytic capacitor is replaced with a small film capacitor. The proposed method is carried out by introducing the freewheel state (one switch is turned on and the other is turned off) into the control. So no extra hardware is added, which makes the proposed method cost-effective. A low electromagnetic interference emission is also achieved due to the continuous input–output currents. In addition, the proposed method can be extended to other topologies easily. This paper first gives the detailed analysis of the proposed control method, and then introduces the controller design. These days, constant on-time current mode (COTCM) control scheme is widely used in the voltage regulator (VR) controllers because it has a higher light-load efficiency and a higher BW design capability while maintaining a simpler compensation requirement. One issue plaguing the COTCM control is its slow transient response which is caused by its fixed TON operation. During the heavy-load step-up transient, the duty cycle becomes saturated and the inductor current increment becomes limited by TON and the minimum off time (TOFF$\_$ MIN) ratio, which can create a large undershoot at load step up. On the other hand, in the load step-down case, if the load step down occurs at the beginning of TON, a large overshoot can be created at the output. To solve this issue, this paper presents a method designed to increase the TON at load step up and then very quickly, decrease at load step down in order to reduce the undershoot and overshoot at output or otherwise save the output capacitor. In this proposed method, the increase or decrease of T ON is proportional to the output change which eliminates the chance of any overcorrection or ring-back problem unlike the methods presented in prior forums. This feature enables the control to work seamlessly in a high-frequency load repetitive case in VR applications. Since this TON change occurs only in the transient period when duty cycle is saturated, it does not affect the small-signal property of the COT control. Moreover, the proposed methods are very much compatible with the state-of-the-art single and multiphase COT control structures. A novel soft-switching interleaved coupled-inductor boost converter is proposed in this paper. Only a single active soft-switching module is needed to simultaneously achieve the soft-switching property of the two switches in the interleaved coupled-inductor boost converter. The better efficiency is achieved with the less components and cost. The two main switches can achieve the ZVT turn-on and smaller-current turn-off simultaneously when the single active soft-switching module is active. Due to the coupling characteristic of the inductors, the voltages across the two inductors are changed at the same time; therefore, the equivalent circuit is equal to the parasitic capacitors of the two main switches in parallel to resonate with the auxiliary inductor. By coupling two input inductors, the volume and cost of the circuit can be reduced. The interleaved coupled-inductor topology can also reduce the input and output current ripples and share the input and output currents. DC electric springs (DCES) are emerging technologies for the (i) regulation of mains voltage against the intermittent renewable generations and (ii) harmonic cancellation in dc microgrids. When conventional converter topologies (e.g., half-bridge or full-bridge converter) are adopted as DCES, the battery storage of the DCES has to process both the dc power and the ac harmonic power. The pulsating ac power can severely reduce the lifetime of the battery. To address this issue, a hybrid-DCES (H-DCES) is proposed in this paper to perform (i) and (ii) in a decoupled manner. With a modified topology and control method, the H-DCES can divert the ac current to the ground and retains the function of manipulating noncritical load for dc voltage regulation. The immediate benefits of this H-DCES are the reduction of storage capacity and a prolonged lifetime of the battery. Both the operating principle and the mathematical model of the proposed H-DCES are analyzed in this paper. A prototype of the H-DCES is practically tested in a 48-V dc grid. The experimental results show that the H-DCES can realize the decoupled operation of dc voltage regulation and harmonic cancellation. In this paper, direct torque control (DTC) of five-phase induction motor (FPIM) is implemented using three-level neutral point clamped (TL-NPC) inverter. One of the advantages of three-level inverter over two-level one for DTC operation is the low torque ripple. Also TL-NPC inverter through space vector modulation technique gives low $ dv/dt$ transition with better voltage waveform. By applying conventional lookup table for DTC, the TL-NPC inverter does not ensures lower $dv/dt$ transition. In this paper, a novel switching scheme for DTC of FPIM using TL-NPC inverter is proposed that ensures the low $ dv/dt$ transition and balancing of dc-link capacitor voltages of TL-NPC inverter. To form the lookup table for DTC operation, instead of using voltage vectors directly, virtual vectors (VVs) are utilized. Two switching states are used in one sample time to generate a VV in $\alpha \beta$ plane, which gives zero resultant voltage in $ xy$ plane. The switching strategy ensures low number of transitions to reduce the switching losses. The switching state redundancies are used in a novel way to balance the dc-link capacitor voltages without using any additional hardware. The proposed technique to balance the dc-link capacitor voltage gives lower switching frequency. This paper presents a hybrid seven-level converter based on T-type converter and H-bridge cascaded suitable for low-voltage and high-power-density applications. The operation principles and conduction paths are analyzed comprehensively. Voltage balance control of the floating capacitors is the key point of this paper. Mathematical expressions of capacitor voltage balance conditions are deduced based on sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). The results show that floating capacitor voltages are only balanced when the modulation index is below 0.82 under SPWM. In order to enlarge the modulation index ensuring the capacitor voltage balance, space vector modulation (SVM) is also applied to regulate floating capacitor voltages taking advantage of redundant switching vectors. Meanwhile, in SVM, there are no additional control requirements for the capacitor voltage. Taken both SPWM and SVM into consideration, the limit to the range of operation for this seven-level converter is presented, which is a function of the modulation index and the power factor. The merit of dc voltage utilization improvement in this topology is also analyzed based on simulation results. An extended-duty-ratio (EDR) boost converter is studied extensively in this paper for high voltage gain applications with a wide input (and/or output) voltage range. The EDR is a unique combination of an interleaved, multiphase boost converter and switched capacitor configuration that achieves high voltage gain with significantly lower switch voltage stress and switching losses compared to conventional high-gain solutions. Most of the switches in the multiphase EDR experience only a fixed fraction of the output voltage ($1/M, 2/M$ , etc., where $M$ is the number of phases). Through extensive analysis over a wide operating range, it is shown here that the EDR boost converter has inherent current sharing among the phases only in a limited range of duty ratio— $(M-1)/M \leq D \leq 1$. As the duty ratio reduces beyond this range as required in wide input voltage applications, inherent current sharing property is lost. In this paper, techniques to ensure current sharing under all operating zones without requiring current sensors are presented. Instead of having equal duty ratio for each phase, it is adjusted for each phase according to the operating region of the converter. Extensive analysis is presented to derive the required duty ratio changes for the different phases. Conventional single-phase power-factor-correction (PFC) rectifiers with active power decoupling capability typically require more than three active switches in their circuits. By exploring the concept of power-buffer cell, a new single-stage PFC rectifier with two active switches, one inductor and one small power-buffering capacitor is reported in this paper. The proposed converter can achieve high-power factor, wide output voltage range, and power decoupling function without using electrolytic capacitor. Additionally, an automatic power decoupling control scheme that is simple and easy to implement is proposed in this paper. The operating principle, control method, and design considerations of the proposed rectifier are also provided. A 100-W prototype with ac input voltage of 110 Vrms and a regulated dc output voltage ranging from 30 to 100 V has been successfully designed and practically tested. The experimental results show that with only a 15 μF power-buffering film capacitor, the proposed converter can achieve an input power factor of over 0.98, peak efficiency of 93.9%, and output voltage ripple of less than 3%, at 100-W output power. This paper introduces a novel five-level nested neutral point piloted (NNPP) converter and analyzes the operating principle of five-level NNPP converter. This paper presents a novel space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) algorithm based on gh coordinate for five-level NNPP converter. First, the common-mode voltage is reduced by choosing the appropriate redundant switching states. After that, the floating-capacitor voltage balance control strategy is presented. The appropriate switch combinations of each phase are determined by the control requirements of floating-capacitor voltages respectively and the hardware mapping method of the switching states is presented. Furthermore, the neutral-point voltage balance control strategy is presented. In order to balance the dc-link capacitor voltages, the seven-segment switching sequence is selected according to the control requirements of dc-link capacitor voltages and the neutral-point voltage regulatory factor is introduced to regulate the durations of the redundant switching states in a switching cycle. Finally, the validity of the novel SVPWM algorithm with decoupling control strategies of floating-capacitor voltages and dc-link capacitor voltages is verified by the experimental results of five-level NNPP converter under steady-state and dynamic conditions. In this paper, a family of new step-up series–parallel dual resonant switched-capacitor converters (SP-DRSCs) is proposed to extend the conversion ratio for high step-up applications. The converters feature a wide gain range, continuously adjustable, and enhanced light-load voltage regulation. All flying capacitors operate in resonance, eliminating high transient current spikes and charge sharing losses. Thus, zero-current-switching (ZCS) turn-on for all transistors and ZCS turn-off for all diodes are achieved. A comprehensive analysis of the operation principle, voltage-gain curves, stable regulation range, and voltage and current stress is given. An analytical method to quantify the passive component volume for the group of step-up dual resonance switched-capacitor converters is presented. This paper proposes the design of gray wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm-based fractional order proportional integral (FOPI) controller for power factor correction (PFC) using interleaved dc–dc single ended primary inductance converter converter with improved performance characteristics such as speed, accuracy, and stability. The detailed analysis and modeling of the proposed converter are presented. The optimal parameters of FOPI controller are obtained using GWO algorithm to improve the speed of response of the system. FOPI controller provides better performance in terms of robustness and stability since it has one more adjustable parameter than the conventional proportional integral (PI) controller. The cascade control strategy is implemented for the proposed converter with GWO-based FOPI controller as inner current and outer voltage controllers for PFC and load voltage regulation. The performance characteristics of the proposed system are analyzed and compared with conventional and other optimization techniques using MATLAB/Simulink software. A prototype of the proposed converter controlled by TMS320C2000 microcontroller for an output power of 200 W is tested and validated with the simulation results. A novel nine-level inverter topology for low-voltage applications is proposed in this paper. Each phase of the inverter is composed of a T-type three‐level cell and an active neutral point clamp three‐level cell. The operation principles and current conduction paths are analyzed in detail and phase-disposition sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation is used to balance voltages of flying capacitors and neutral point. The mathematical relationship between the capacitance and the desired ripple in the inverter output is established to select the intermediate capacitance value. Compared with other nine-level inverters suitable for low-voltage applications, the proposed inverter has advantages in a number of gate drivers, a number of dc sources, and efficiency. In the no-load condition, LLC converter usually fails to regulate its output voltage although it operates at a high switching frequency. Till now, it is hard to obtain the exact relationship between design parameters and the maximum switching frequency for no-load regulation capability. In this paper, a specific criterion for no-load regulation of LLC converter is provided, without using active components or other modulation schemes. By analyzing the macroscopic switching period and microscopic switching transition in the no-load condition, it is shown that not only the peaking resonant current during the switching transition, but also the resonant tank design affect the no-load regulation of the LLC converter, which affects the no-load regulation capability. Furthermore, the relationship among design parameters is analyzed and the design guideline is also provided to achieve no-load regulation at the specified maximum switching frequency. The low-frequency fluctuation over the capacitor voltages seriously limits the development of medium-voltage variable-speed drives with a modular multilevel converter (MMC). Therefore, this paper presents an effective strategy of the low-speed and start-up operation for an MMC-based motor drive. The proposed strategy properly coordinates the improved injection and the reduced average capacitor voltage with high applicability. The specific interactions between the control parameters and the system metrics are analyzed to give the detailed steps of the parameters designing. Hence, based on the derivations, the proposed method enables the low-frequency operation under the nominal load torque with decreased injected components and reduced peak capacitor voltages. What is more, two start-up strategies that, respectively, aim at different objectives for the coordinated strategy are proposed, indicating satisfying control performances for the practical applications. The injected common-mode voltage and circulating current in the proposed method are designed to have a great reduction. Thus, the unfavorable risks for the motor are evidently decreased for better stability. The reduced peak current also lessens the high stress on switching devices with desirable reliability. This paper presents a model predictive current control (MPCC) for three-phase four-switch converters (TPFSC) connected to surface permanent magnet synchronous generators (SPMSGs) in oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy plants, that brings some benefits over the existing control methods used in this type of plants. The proposed MPCC for TPFSC follows the current references with great accuracy, whereas the switching frequency of the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBTs) is fixed and low. This method minimizes the current reference tracking error, and its fast response makes it suitable for the power take-off systems present in wave energy converters. Furthermore, the system features a fast capacitor voltage offset suppression control. The dynamic performance and the voltage offset control of the proposed strategy for TPFSC feeding a SPMSG is evaluated in the Simulink environment. Later, experimental studies are carried out on an 8.7 kW laboratory SPMSG prototype. The three-level full-bridge (TLFB) dc−dc converter has been widely used in high-voltage, high-power applications. In the experimental test, the neutral-point voltage deviation appears; moreover, it has also been found out that if the flying capacitors are introduced, the input capacitor voltages could realize self-balance even if no active balancing solutions are adopted. In the previous publications, the role of flying capacitors is generally considered to extend the range of soft switching; however, the self-balance ability has not been mentioned or investigated in any publications thus far. In order to fill this gap, this paper provides the detailed mode operation analysis of the TLFB converter and reveals the cause of the imbalance. In addition, the mechanism of the self-balance ability provided by the flying capacitors is explained in detail, which gives a deep insight into the converter. Without active control, the voltage fluctuations of the dc-link and flying capacitors in a 4-level hybrid-clamped converter (4L-HCC) become excessively large in low-frequency operation. This paper studies the switching state redundancy inherent in a 4L-HCC and proposes a new capacitor voltage balancing and stabilizing method to minimize the dc-link and flying capacitor voltage fluctuations. A straightforward algorithm is developed based on a logic table to select the suitable switching states. Verified by simulation and experimental testing results, the new method and algorithm virtually eliminate all the big voltage fluctuations of capacitors at low and zero frequencies, greatly enhancing the robustness and reliability of a 4L-HCC. Despite several studies and approaches, the design of current controllers for grid-connected converters via LCL filters is still a challenging task. This is mainly due to the parametric uncertainties and the grid background voltage distortions to which the system is submitted. In order to overcome these inherent system challenges, this paper proposes a multiloop control framework that simplifies the system dynamics of the overall circuit by splitting it in two equivalent sub-circuits. An inner loop is implemented as a fast sliding mode controller that controls the filter capacitor voltage in a fast and robust way. As a result, the plant, viewed by the outer loop, yields a voltage-controlled voltage source connected to the grid through an L filter. Thus, multiple resonant controllers are included in the state-space representation of this simplified system, allowing the design of a state-feedback controller in the outer loop for asymptotic tracking of the grid current with disturbance rejection of the grid background voltage. Here, a discrete linear quadratic regulator algorithm is used for designing the state-feedback gains. A simple design procedure is presented, as well as simulations and experimental results, to show the good performance of the proposed control scheme even under significant uncertainties and disturbances of the system. In this paper, a comprehensive sliding mode control (SMC) loop design for a CLLC resonant converter is proposed. The major objectives of the proposed SMC are to improve the converter dynamics and to achieve a tight output voltage regulation with respect to any parameter variations and external disturbances. The sliding surface coefficients are selected to ensure both large- and small-signal stability for the robustness of the converter under different operating conditions. Furthermore, system dynamic performances considering the error dynamics and overshoots are investigated. To validate the proposed algorithm, a hardware prototype of a bi-directional CLLC resonant converter for plug-in electric vehicle applications is developed and tested up to 1 kW, and the effectiveness of the proposed control solution is verified by the load transients and start-up tests. This paper proposes a three-phase, five-level, non-regenerative pulsewidth modulated rectifier using only two active switches (minimum required) per phase, which drastically reduces gate driver requirement and hardware complexity. It draws sinusoidal input current at close to unity power factor. All the semiconductor devices are rated at only one fourth of the dc-link voltage, and none of them requires any transient voltage balancing snubber. A total of 8 out of the 14 diodes per phase undergo soft switching transition under all operating conditions, which increases its efficiency. No extra hardware circuitry for balancing the flying capacitors (FCs) or the dc-link mid-point voltage are required, which further reduces hardware complexity and increases the conversion efficiency. The proposed topology does not need any sophisticated startup procedure for charging the FCs either, which solves the problem of semiconductor overvoltage during starting. A 3-kW laboratory prototype is built to experimentally verify the proposed topology. This paper presents a new five-level T-type nested neutral point clamped (T-NNPC) converter. The proposed five-level T-NNPC topology is very attractive for medium-voltage applications as it can work in a wide range of voltages without the need of devices in series, and fewer components compared to the other five-level topologies. A model predictive control (MPC) strategy is also developed for the proposed converter to control the output currents at different output frequencies, and control flying capacitor voltages. A discrete-time model of the converter is developed and the control objectives that are the output currents and flying capacitor voltages are defined regarding switching states. A cost function is defined to minimize the deviation of the predicted values of the control objectives from their desired values. During each sampling time, the best switching state is selected and applied to the converter. The performance of the proposed five-level T-NNPC and the developed MPC strategy is studied in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, and the feasibility of the converter is evaluated experimentally. This paper presents a bridgeless dual-mode single power-conversion ac–dc converter that can achieve a high conversion efficiency. By adopting a bidirectional switch, we remove a full-bridge diode rectifier from the grid side of the proposed converter, and thereby, reduce the number of components and the primary-side conduction loss. To adapt the converter to 1-kW power applications with a bidirectional switch, we used a series-resonant circuit in the output voltage doubler on the secondary side. The series-resonant circuit also provides zero-current switching turn-off at the output diode, and thereby, reduces the reverse-recovery loss. To attain medium–high power capability with an appropriate transformer, the proposed converter operates in both discontinuous conduction mode and continuous conduction mode. The operation principle of the converter is presented and analyzed. By using the dual-mode control algorithm, the proposed converter achieves a high power factor of 0.994 and maximum efficiency of 97.3 $\%$. This paper proposes a new 7-level inverter topology for induction motor drives. It is a hybrid topology formed by cascading a 5-level active neutral-point-clamped inverter with a 3-level T-type converter. It is obtained using low-voltage semiconductor devices with voltage blocking capability of Vdc/3 and Vdc/6. The topology uses three floating capacitors per phase, which are balanced within a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) switching duration using switching-state redundancies for each pole-voltage level. Topology forms two stacks at the front-end, which requires individual symmetrical dc source. The analysis of switching loss and conduction loss is performed and compared with some of the existing 7-level multi-level inverters reported in various literatures to show the advantages of the proposed topology. Furthermore, the single dc source operation with two stacked capacitors and closed-loop control of neutral-point voltage using symmetrical six-phase induction motor is proposed. The voltage-control algorithms for floating capacitors and dc-link stacked capacitors are proposed, which are independent of load power factor and modulation index. Fault diagnosis is indispensable for the reliable operation of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). This paper presents a submodule voltage similarity-based, real-time, and fast open-circuit fault diagnosis method for MMCs. The proposed fault detection and location (FDL) method is derived based on the similarity analysis of capacitor voltages under both normal and fault conditions. Due to the absence of the discharging current path caused by the open-circuit fault, capacitor voltage of the submodule with the faulty switch will differ from those with healthy switches. This characteristic can be extracted by designing the correlation coefficients of the capacitor voltages at the same arm. With the help of correlation coefficients, the open-circuit fault can be located at the early stage before the capacitor voltage is charged very high. All the data required for the proposed FDL method can be obtained by the available sampled data for the control scheme of MMCs. No extra measurement or hardware is required. It is considerable to reduce the computation load while keeping a good total harmonic distortion (THD) performance for the modular multilevel converter (MMC) with model predictive control (MPC). In this paper, the discrete-time mathematical model of the MMC is derived and the output voltage ripples of the cascaded submodules (SMs) are analyzed in detail. Accordingly, a modified increased-level MPC method A (IL-MPC-A) is proposed with 2N + 1 ac-side output voltage levels. The computation load is significantly reduced without losing the harmonic circulating currents suppression and capacitor voltage ripples compensation capabilities. In this method, the cost function minimization step and capacitor voltage sorting algorithm are combined to determine the optimal control option. In addition, to avoid the selection of weighting factors and further reduce the computation load as the increasing of the SM number, another modified IL-MPC-B is proposed by directly calculating the optimal ac-side output voltage level and arm summation voltage according to the discrete-time mathematical model. As a result, the ac-side output current and circulating current controls are decoupled. Furthermore, the capacitor voltages are balanced with a proposed control scheme by adjusting the circulating current reference. A multiphase-interleaved non-isolated high step-up dc/dc resonant converter for high-current applications with wide load range is proposed in this paper. The converter consists of an inverter stage with multiple resonant inverters in parallel interleaving operation that is cascaded to a common diode–capacitor rectifier stage. The topology of the inverter stage is a variation of class E inverter, which is designed for voltage boosting and of which the voltage gain is insensitive to load change. The rectifier stage comprises multiple pairs (correlated to the number of inverters in parallel) of diodes in parallel and a small output capacitor, which makes it simple to implement and of low cost. Together, the voltage gain variance of the converter can be confined within a small value and zero voltage switching operation can be maintained over a wide load range. A detailed mathematical analysis of the proposed converter is conducted for systematizing its design. A prototype of the proposed converter with an input voltage of 23.6 V, a rated output voltage of 190 V, and a rated output power of 80 W at 486 kHz is constructed for verification. In this paper, a new space vector pulse width modulation method to extend the linear modulation range of a cascaded five level inverter topology with a single dc supply is presented. Using this method, the inverter can be controlled linearly and the peak phase fundamental output voltage of the inverter can be increased from 0.577 to 0.637 V\text{dc} without increasing the dc bus voltage and without exceeding the induction motor voltage rating. This new technique makes use of cascaded inverter pole voltage redundancy and property of the space vector structure for its operation. Using this, the induction motor drive can be operated till the full speed range (0–50 Hz) with the elimination of lower order harmonics in the phase voltage and phase current. In high-voltage applications, the magnitude of total semiconductor losses (on-state and switching) determines the viability of modular-type multilevel converters. Therefore, this paper presents a new cell arrangement that aims to lower total semiconductor loss of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) to less than that of the half-bridge modular multilevel converter (HB-MMC). Additional attributes of the proposed cell are: it eliminates the protective thyristors used in conventional half-bridge cells that deviate part of the dc-fault current away from the antiparallel diode of the main switch when the converter is blocked during a dc short-circuit fault, and it can facilitate continued operation of the MMC during cell failures without the need for a mechanical bypass switch. Thus, the MMC that uses the proposed cell retains all advantages of the HB-MMC such as full modularity of the power circuit and internal fault management. The claimed attributes of the proposed cell are verified using illustrative simulations and reduced scale experimentations. Additionally, this paper provides brief and critical discussions that highlight the attributes and limitations of popular MMC control methods and different MMC cells structures proposed in the literature, considering the power electronic system perspective. This paper extends the voltage-doubler concept to the single-phase SEPIC rectifier in discontinuous conduction mode and, as a consequence, novel rectifiers are proposed. A comparison with the classic SEPIC rectifier shows that the proposed converters can either provide reduced voltage stress on the semiconductors for the same output voltage level or supply double the gain of the output voltage with the same voltage stress. The proposed voltage-doubler SEPIC rectifiers provide a high power factor with no current control and they can be applied in order to improve the static gain of the structure, which can make the SEPIC rectifier suitable for applications that require a high voltage level. In this paper, the generic structure based on a three-state switch, four different implementations of the proposed concept (including bridgeless structures), steady-state analysis, a dynamic model, system control, and experimental results are presented. The proposed rectifiers were verified by experimental results obtained with a prototype built with the following specifications: 1000 W output power, 220 V input voltage, 400 V output voltage, and 50 kHz switching frequency. The matrix converter (MC) is a direct ac–ac power converter without an intermediate dc link. It has several attractive features, such as high power density, four-quadrant operation, and bidirectional power flow. However, the application of MCs in high-voltage and high-power systems is still limited by the device voltage levels. It is well known that the multilevel power converter technology can be a solution to enhance the voltage rating and improve harmonic performance in many applications. Therefore, an application of a multilevel topology based on a direct ac–ac power converter is proposed in this paper. This paper first introduce the topology structure, the switching pattern grouping method, and the proposed output voltage modulation method for a five-level capacitor clamped multilevel matrix converter (5LMC). Amplitude coefficient adjustment is also introduced as a part of modulation procedure to simplify the duty cycles calculation. A family of bidirectional switched-capacitor (SC) converters with high-gain ratio of any positive integer is proposed in this paper for distributed energy resources applications. As compared with other existing SC converters achieving a same conversion gain, the main advantages of the proposed converters are that they require a relatively lower number of switches and capacitors, have a relatively lower switch's and capacitor's stress, and that their associated driver circuits are simpler to realize. Importantly, with the achievable conversion ratio being flexible and that the input and output of the proposed converters are of common ground, the proposed converters are widely suitable for many applications. Moreover, as the proposed converters do not possess magnetic component or any component that can severely degrade the converters’ performance at high temperature, they are especially useful for high-temperature applications. Besides, the proposed converters are capable of delivering bidirectional power, which is a key requirement for emerging applications with battery storages. Different aspects of the proposed converters, including a simple auxiliary power supply circuit for the MOSFETs’ drivers, will be discussed in this paper. A nine-time SC converter prototype that operates with 20-V input voltage, 100-W output, and at 75 kHz, is constructed and tested. Experiment results show that the maximum efficiency achievable with this prototype is over 98% (without driver's loss) and the efficiency over the entire load range between 25 and 100 W is over 95.5% including the driver's loss. The output voltage ripple of the SC converter is less than 1%. In this paper, the Z-source converter is introduced to power factor correction (PFC) applications. The concept is demonstrated through a wireless power transfer (WPT) system for electric vehicle battery charging, namely Z-source resonant converter (ZSRC). Due to the Z-source network (ZSN), the ZSRC inherently performs PFC and regulate the system output voltage simultaneously, without adding extra semiconductor devices and control circuitry to the conventional WPT system such as conventional PFC converters do. In other words, the ZSN can be categorized as a family of the single-stage PFC converters. In addition, the ZSN is suitable for high-power applications since it is immune to shoot-through states, which increases reliability and adds a boost feature to the system. The ZSRC-based WPT system operating principle is described and analyzed in this paper. A new boost-type multilevel inverter using switched capacitor structure is proposed. The main feature of the proposed inverter is boosting and multilevel output with small number of components. Due to the passive voltage balancing of each capacitor maintains a constant voltage without additional control. In this paper, the operation principle, the modulation method, the voltage/current stresses on switches and the determination of capacitances, the simulation results with MATLAB/Simulink R2015a, the experimental results, and the 2-kW simulation are shown. The simulation and the experiments were conducted under resistive load and inductive load conditions. In addition, the load variation was conducted in the experiment. Under both resistive load and inductive load conditions, the obtained waveforms by simulation and experiment agreed well with the theory. The widespread use of electronic devices increases the need for compact power factor corrected power supplies. This paper describes an isolated power factor corrected power supply that utilizes the leakage inductance of the isolation transformer to provide boost inductor functionality. The bulk capacitor is in the isolated part of the power supply allowing for controlled startup without dedicated surge limiting components. A control method based on switch timing and input/output voltage measurements is developed to jointly achieve voltage regulation and input power factor control. This paper introduces a new configuration of bidirectional multilevel converter in electric vehicle (EV) applications. It has multilevel dc–dc converter with a dc link capacitor voltage balance feature. The multilevel dc–dc converter operates in a bidirectional manner, which is a fundamental requirement in EVs. Compared to the conventional configurations, the proposed one only implements two extra power switches and a capacitor to balance the voltage of the T-type multilevel inverter (MLI) capacitor over a complete drive cycle or at fault conditions. Therefore, no extra isolated sensor, control loops, and/or special switching pattern are required. Moreover, the proposed configuration due to the high-frequency cycle-by-cycle voltage balance between ${C_N}$ and ${C_P}$ , the bulky electrolytic capacitors used in T-type MLI, are replaced with more reliable longer life film capacitors. This will result in a size and weight reduction of the converter by 20%. This allows more real estate for the EV battery in the chassis’ space envelope to increase its capacity. This paper proposes a novel dynamic ramp valley control in a current-mode adaptive on-time controller for the on-chip buck converter. It improves the system stability and reduces the output voltage under the load-dump. The proposed novel dynamic ramp valley control uses a sample and hold circuit, a comparator, and a ramp valley control to avoid the generation of an erroneous pulse signal while regulating the output voltage under the load-dump. Finally, a buck converter with 12 to 19 V input voltage range and 1.05 V output voltage with the novel dynamic ramp valley control is implemented in an integrated circuit. Based on the hardware experimental results, the output voltage under the load-dump with and without the proposed dynamic ramp valley control is 156 and 224 mV, respectively. Thus, the output voltage with the proposed dynamic ramp valley control is lower by 68 mV than that without the proposed dynamic ramp valley control, avoiding the potential damage of the output load, moreover, this performance has been verified with the SIMPLIS simulation and hardware experimental results. A decentralized control method for power module (PM) capacitor voltage and switching frequency balancing in modular multilevel converter is presented in this paper. The proposed method is composed of a central controller, six arm controllers, and several group controllers. The group controller is only in charge of the PM capacitor voltage balancing within a corresponding group, and the arm controller is in charge of the PM capacitor voltage balancing and PM switching frequency balancing among groups within an arm. A control method based on a PI controller using the average PM capacitor voltage of each group to keep voltage balancing among groups is proposed. A dynamically adjusted extra exchange number strategy based on the voltage difference of each group is also developed to balance the PM switching frequency among groups. The key advantages of the proposed method are the reduction in the number of the PM capacitor voltages that need to be transmitted and sorted in each group controller as well as the reduction of the communication burden between the group and arm controllers. The proposed method is also highly effective under PM faults. The voltage ripple factor and the PM switching frequency of the proposed method are almost identical to the conventional centralized methods. This paper presents an active state-of-charge (SOC) balancing control strategy for modular super capacitor energy storage system (ESS). The strategy has a master–slave structure, including a common dc bus voltage loop and individual slave current loop for each submodule. The common voltage loop ensures the ability of the system to stabilize dc bus voltage cannot be affected by SOC balancing control, and provides a same original current reference for all submodules. SOC information is introduced into current loops to achieve SOC balancing control. The highest SOC is taken as a reference for low SOC modules, thus, the low SOC modules can regulate the submodule average operation current according to the SOC reference and their own SOC. In order to minimize system current deviation caused by the introduction of SOC, a current correction method is proposed to improve system current regulate performance. The proposed strategy can achieve SOC balancing control during ESS charging and discharging process dynamically, in addition, the modularity of the system is improved and the proposed strategy has favorable stability. A modular ESS prototype consisting of three half-bridge submodules is tested in the laboratory, and the experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. This paper presents a modular multilevel series/parallel converter (MMSPC) with intermodule switched-inductor power transfer. The switched-inductor voltage conversion feature allows controllable and efficient transfer of energy between modules with nonnegligible voltage difference, providing both step-down and step-up functionalities. Thus, this converter can accurately control and rapidly adjust the voltage of each module to generate an ac output voltage waveform with a controllable number of levels, increasing the quality of the output. Moreover, the intrinsic dc–dc conversion feature can generate a dc controllable output voltage and enable new applications. In this text, we specifically demonstrate how the flexibility of obtaining both ac and dc output with the same setup renders the topology promising for battery energy storage systems and dc microgrid applications.
