There have been several advanced topologies proposed by the community for micro-inverter applications. However, many such applications suffer from unwanted second-order harmonic current ripple at dc input. Moreover, in the absence of suitable passive filter or ripple compensator, the second-order harmonics ripple may propagate into the dc source. This results in several problems to the system, related to system efficiency, life, cost, size, reliability, and stability. This paper proposes an adaptive sliding-mode controller to shape the output impedance of the boost-circuit of quasi-switched boost inverter such that the propagation of the ripple from dc link to the dc-input source is resisted. The quasi-switched boost inverter is one of the advanced and suitable topologies for the micro-inverter applications. The adaptive nature of the proposed controller improves the transient performance of the system at the line–load transients unlike some existing solutions, which affects dynamics adversely to achieve ripple mitigation objective. This paper proposes a dual-space vector control scheme for the open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM) drive fed by the dual inverter with a single dc supply. Potential zero-sequence current in the open-end winding drive system has to be considered since it causes circulating current in the winding and leads to high current stress of power semiconductor devices and high losses. Zero-sequence current in open-end winding ac motor drives is usually caused by the zero-sequence voltage, and therefore switching combinations which do not produce zero-sequence voltage are used to synthesize the reference voltage in existing methods. But even so, the zero-sequence voltage can also be produced by the dead time of the inverter. In order to suppress zero-sequence current in the OEW-PMSM drive, a dual-space vector control scheme is proposed and a novel dual-inverter space vector pulse width modulation (PWM) with the zero-sequence voltage reference is employed to regulate system zero-sequence voltage in this paper. Compared with existing dual inverter PWM strategies, the novel algorithm build a regulation mechanism for the zero-sequence voltage. The proposed method is compared with the conventional vector control by simulations and experiments, and the results shown that the proposed scheme can suppress zero-sequence current effectively. In several electrical dc–ac power conversions, the ac output voltage is higher than the input voltage. If a voltage-source inverter (VSI) is used, then an additional dc–dc boosting stage is required to overcome the step-down VSI limitations. Recently, several impedance source converters are gaining higher attentions [1], [2], as they are able to provide buck-boost capability in a single conversion stage. This paper proposes the merging of the boost stage and the VSI stage in a single stage dc–ac power conversion, denoted as split-source inverter (SSI). The proposed topology requires the same number of active switches of the VSI, three additional diodes, and the same eight states of a conventional space-vector modulation. It also shows some merits compared to Z-source inverters, especially in terms of reduced switch voltage stress for voltage gains higher than 1.15. This paper presents the analysis of the SSI and compares different modulation schemes. Moreover, it presents a modified modulation scheme to eliminate the low frequency ripple in the input current and the voltage across the inverter bridge. Pulse-width-modulated (PWM) converters have been widely applied for power processing, and they are typically the stems of other types of converters, such as quasi-resonant, Z-source, and switched-inductor hybrid converters. Development of PWM converters has been spanning over a century, starting from the buck converter. The well-known PWM converters include buck, boost, buck–boost, Ćuk, single ended primary inductive converter (SEPIC), zeta, Z-source, quasi-Z source, etc. Many attempts have been proposed to develop these converters based mostly on canonical cell concepts and by introducing extra LC filters to the cells. This paper presents an enhancement to the layer and graft schemes by introducing the ideas of dc voltage/current offsetting, capacitor/inductor component splitting, diode grafting, and inverse operation of PWM converters. The PWM converters, which can be operated in continuous conduction mode (CCM) or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), therefore can be synthesized systematically according to decoded transfer gains. Decoding and synthesizing PWM converters uniquely bridge transfer gains to converter topologies and provide readers a comprehensive understanding of PWM-converter evolution from the original converter, the buck converter. Additionally, in this paper, the Ćuk, SEPIC, and zeta converters all with the same transfer gain of $D/(1 - D)$ are proved to be equivalent to the buck–boost converter with an extra LC filter. For further illustrating the proposed approaches, various types of Z-source converters, switched-capacitor/switched-inductor hybrid converters, and a single-stage interleaved converter are reviewed, and new PWM converters are developed. The increasing interest in multiphase drive systems has led to the extension of inverter topologies and pulse width modulation (PWM) methods from three-phase to multiphase occasions. Carrier-based PWM (CPWM) dominates space vector PWM when the phase number increases, because of its simple computation and modular implementation. Although intensive work has been done on modifying PWM methods to reduce the common-mode voltage (CMV), not enough work has been done on CPWM methods with CMV reduction for multiphase drives. This paper extends the phase-shifted sinusoidal PWM (PS-SPWM) method for five-phase and six-phase two-level voltage-source inverters (VSI) and employs the intersection-plotting method and Fourier analysis to reveal the nature of the CMV. Both experiment and simulation results comply with theoretical analysis that compared with the conventional SPWM, the PS-SPWM can effectively reduce the CMV in peak-to-peak value and RMS value, though it leads to a higher phase current distortion. A sawtooth carrier-based sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SC-SPWM) technique for asymmetrical six-phase two-level inverters is proposed in this paper, which could reduce both the peak-to-peak amplitude and the changing frequency of the common-mode voltage (CMV). The intersection-plotting method reveals that the mirror symmetrical sawtooth carriers for two three-phase groups can help optimize the distribution of overlapping areas, which is the CMV reduction mechanism of SC-SPWM. Additionally, the Fourier analysis is employed to quantitatively evaluate the modulation index and harmonic performance of SC-SPWM compared with the conventional SPWM and two phase-shifted SPWM methods. Also, further analysis demonstrates that dead time does not affect the reduction of CMV in a noticeable way. Finally, both simulation and experimental results coincide with the theoretical analysis that the proposed SC-SPWM shows the best performance in reducing the CMV amplitude and changing frequency among these four SPWM methods, though it leads to a higher phase current distortion. Multilevel inverters have created a new wave of interest in industry and research. While the classical topologies have proved to be a viable alternative in a wide range of high-power medium-voltage applications, there has been an active interest in the evolution of newer topologies. Reduction in overall part count as compared to the classical topologies has been an important objective in the recently introduced topologies. In this paper, some of the recently proposed multilevel inverter topologies with reduced power switch count are reviewed and analyzed. The paper will serve as an introduction and an update to these topologies, both in terms of the qualitative and quantitative parameters. Also, it takes into account the challenges which arise when an attempt is made to reduce the device count. This paper proposes a switched-capacitor multilevel inverter for high-frequency ac power distribution systems. The proposed topology produces a staircase waveform with higher number of output levels employing fewer components compared to several existing switched-capacitor multilevel inverters in the literature. This topology is beneficial where asymmetric dc voltage sources are available, e.g., in case of renewable energy farms based ac microgrids and modern electric vehicles. Utilizing the available dc sources as inputs for a single inverter solves the major problem of connecting several inverters in parallel. Additionally, the need to stack voltage sources, like batteries or supercapacitors, in series which demand charge equalization algorithms, are eliminated as the voltage sources employed share a common ground. The inverter inherently solves the problem of capacitor voltage balancing as each capacitor is charged to the value equal to one of the input voltage every cycle. State analysis, losses, and the selection of capacitance are examined. This paper discusses the operation of a single-stage, isolated, high-frequency ac-link-based single-phase dc–ac converter, suitable for photovoltaic microinverter applications, controlled using phase modulation of the secondary-side cycloconverter devices. A detailed analysis is presented explaining the impact of prominent circuit nonidealities such as device capacitance and transformer leakage inductance on circuit behavior. The proposed extended-dead-time based modulation scheme helps in achieving zero-voltage-switching of the primary devices over the entire line cycle of the ac output and also offers the benefit of reduced transformer rms current due to absence of circulating current in the zero state. A flyback-based regenerative clamp circuit is used for mitigating voltage spikes on the secondary devices arising due to leakage inductance induced oscillations. A generic commutation strategy is also discussed, which makes operation with nonunity power factor loads also possible. Experimental results on a 260-W laboratory prototype under different load conditions are presented to illustrate the discussed principles and highlight the performance improvements. This paper introduces a new concept of common mode voltage cancellation for pulse width modulated motor drives, aiming at solving issues such as ground leakage current, common mode electromagnetic interference, and bearing current. The balanced inverter topology and dual-winding stator configuration are proposed as a practical realization. Implementation considerations on the influence of circuit asymmetry are also investigated. This paper proposes a single-phase, single-stage buck–boost inverter for photovoltaic (PV) systems. The presented topology has one common terminal in input and output ports which eliminates common mode leakage current problem in the grid-connected PV applications. Although it uses four switches, its operation is bimodal and only two switches receive high-frequency pulse width modulation signals in each mode. Its principle of operation is described in detail with the help of equivalent circuits. Its dynamic model is presented, based on which a bimodal controller is designed. This paper addresses the inverter nonlinearity of a three-level T-type inverter. The main causes of the nonlinearity are pulse shaping, pulse skipping due to narrow pulses for the dead time, and voltage drop of the switching devices. Although the same causes have existed in two-level inverters, the pulse skipping phenomenon and results are quite different in the case of the three-level T-type inverter. The effects of pulse shaping and skipping have been investigated and discussed. In addition, the voltage drop of the switching devices has been considered in conjunction with the conduction path of the T-type inverter. Compensation methods based on the pulse width modulation (PWM) of T-type inverter to alleviate the inverter nonlinearity have been proposed from research results. The proposed methods could be easily implemented by adding appropriate offset voltages to the voltage references of the inverter in PWM. Furthermore, a neutral voltage balancing method of a three-level T-type inverter has been proposed in conjunction with the proposed PWM methods using offset voltage. Through extensive experimental tests, the fifth- and seventh-harmonic components of the current are conspicuously reduced along with the even harmonics. By using a carrier-based pulse width modulation, this paper presents a developed phase-shift space vector modulation strategy for a nine-switch inverter to overcome one of major drawbacks, i.e., output voltage and current distortion. This is due to the crossover of modulating waves per phase based on the different phase-shift angle between dual terminals. The proposed strategy done by mathematical algorithms based on the critical operating point principle accomplishes in the wide range of phase-shift conditions that contribute in both common- and difference-frequency modes with its expediency of uncomplicated computation and handy implementation. Even more, the identical and nonidentical modulation index techniques are wholly brought up. In this paper, natural sinusoidal hybrid converter is presented for medium-voltage reactive-power control applications. Main high-voltage inverter that produces fundamental reactive current is a square-wave inverter. Several single-phase full-bridge converters are connected in series with this square inverter to eliminate harmonic voltages from the net output voltage of this hybrid converter. DC bus voltages of these cells are naturally controlled. Two different switching strategies are proposed for these series cells in this paper—one is pulse width modulation (PWM) type and the other is non-PWM type. Dc bus voltage of main high-voltage inverter is varied to have variable reactive power. Eliminating the leakage current is one of the most important issues for transformerless three-phase photovoltaic (PV) systems. In this paper, the leakage current elimination of a three-phase four-leg PV inverter is investigated. With the common-mode loop model established, the generation mechanism of the leakage current is clearly identified. Different typical carrier-based modulation methods and their corresponding common-mode voltages are discussed. A new modulation strategy with Boolean logic function is proposed to achieve the constant common-mode voltage for the leakage current reduction. Finally, the different modulation methods are implemented and tested on the TMS320F28335 DSP +XC3S400 FPGA digital control platform. This paper proposes a new five-level voltage source inverter for medium-voltage high-power applications. The proposed inverter is based on the upgrade of a four-level nested neutral-point clamped converter. This inverter can operate over a wide range of voltages without the need for connecting power semiconductor in series, has high-quality output voltage and fewer components compared to other classic five-level topologies. The features and operation of the proposed converter are studied and a simple sinusoidal PWM scheme is developed to control and balance the flying capacitors to their desired values. The purpose of neutral-point voltage balancing algorithms in the three-level neutral-point clamped (3L-NPC) topology is to eliminate the voltage unbalance of top- and bottom-side dc-link voltages (neutral-point voltage). These algorithms are divided into dc unbalance and ac unbalance compensation methods. The dc unbalance causes distortion of output currents; therefore, this problem has to be solved. The ac unbalance implies that there is an ac ripple in the top- and bottom-side dc-link voltages. In applications using 3L-NPC topology, a large dc-link capacitor value is required to mitigate this ac unbalance problem. As a result, the size and the cost of applications become large and expensive. In this paper, a compensation method for mitigating the ac unbalance of the neutral-point voltage is proposed, which causes the dc-link capacitor value to be small, when a carrier-based pulse width modulation method is applied. The proposed method compensates the ac unbalance of the neutral-point voltage by adding an optimal compensation value to the reference duty signals. This compensation value is calculated simply by currents and reference duty signals. A capacitor voltage-balancing method for a nested neutral point clamped (NNPC) inverter is proposed in this paper. The NNPC inverter is a newly developed four-level voltage-source inverter for medium-voltage applications with properties such as operating over a wide range of voltages (2.4–7.2 kV) without the need for connecting power semiconductor in series and high-quality output voltage. The NNPC topology has two flying capacitors in each leg. In order to ensure that the inverter can operate normally and all switching devices share identical voltage stress, the voltage across each capacitor should be controlled and maintained at one-third of dc bus voltage. The proposed capacitor voltage-balancing method takes advantage of redundancy in phase switching states to control and balance flying capacitor voltages. Simple and effective logic tables are developed for the balancing control. The proposed method is easy to implement and needs very few computations. Moreover, the method is suitable for and easy to integrate with different pulse width modulation schemes. In this paper, a modified half-bridge (HB) resonant inverter topology with a dc-link neutral-point-clamped cell is proposed. A pseudo asymmetrical voltage-cancellation PWM method and a control strategy are introduced. The proposed topology can maximize the inverter output power factor, and minimize variations in the switching frequency. In addition, most switches are clamped to half of the dc input voltage at turn-off, increasing the overall efficiency of the system for a wide load range. The efficiency of the proposed inverter is improved up to 7% at light-load conditions compared with that of the conventional HB inverter. Informative expressions for performance comparison between the proposed inverter and its counterpart are provided. This paper proposed a fast, real-time and fair robustness scheme for single switch and double switches open-circuit fault diagnosis in pulse-width-modulated voltage source inverter (VSI) for vector-controlled induction motor drives based on three phase output currents, which is also easy to insert into the controlled algorithm as a subroutine without major modification. The concept of allelic points is proposed and corresponding functions are defined to describe the symmetry of the VSI physical topology under healthy and faulty conditions. The residuals between any two phase functions are applied as criterion for allelic points. Under healthy condition, three legs are symmetrical and the residuals are all closed to zero, when open-circuit fault occurs, the residuals will be larger than a predefined threshold, so it is used to detect fault occurrence. When fault occurs, the near-zero current samples per fundamental period will get large, its proportions in a period will be different when different fault classes occur. The fault can be located combined the functions and residuals based on the analysis of VSI topology. The adverse effect of common-mode voltage (CMV) in pulse-width modulation inverters is widely acknowledged. Various approaches for mitigating CMV effect in PWM inverters have been proposed in the literature but they either show limited effect or impair the utilization of the drive. This paper proposes an active method for eliminating CMV in multilevel inverters which is independent on the inverter topology or its modulation scheme. In particular, the proposed method does not restrict the modulation index range of the drive. A detailed analysis of the active filter circuitry and a closed-form feed-forward control law are provided. In this paper, the performance of the new three-dimensional space vector-based switching signal generation technique for a grid-connected four-leg voltage source inverter used as a shunt compensator is proposed. The shunt compensator can be used for reactive power compensation, harmonic elimination, load balancing, and neutral current elimination in a three-phase four-wire grid-connected system. It is shown through experimental studies that switching losses in the four-leg voltage source inverter are appreciably reduced to a maximum of 33% in three-dimensional space vector modulation without NULL vector as the number of switches controlled at any instant of time is six out of eight. The new proposed technique is compared with three-dimensional space vector modulation with null vector. Experimental results are given to show the validity of the proposed switching control strategy. This paper investigates a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) composed of two conventional three-phase inverters series cascaded through an open-end winding (OEW) transformer, denominated here DVR-OEW. The DVR-OEW operating with either equal or different dc-link voltages is examined. The proposed topology aims to regulate the voltage at the load side in the case of voltage sags/swells, distortion, or unbalance at the grid voltage. A suitable control strategy is developed, including space-vector analysis, level-shifted PWM and its equivalent optimized single-carrier PWM, as well as the operating principles and characteristics of the DVR. Comparisons among the DVR-OEW and conventional configurations, including a neutral-point clamped converter-based DVR, are furnished. The main advantages of the DVR-OEW compared to the conventional topologies lie on: 1) reduced harmonic distortion, 2) reduced converter losses, and 3) reduced voltage rating of the power switches. The basic power electronic interfaces rendering volume and weight of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are an inverter, an on-board charger, and a bidirectional dc/dc converter. This paper proposes an innovative integrated bidirectional converter with a single-stage on-board charger to reduce the number of switches, size, and weight of the power electronic interfaces. The analyses show that 266 cm^3 and 1.1 kg can be saved due to the elimination of the inductor core used for power factor correction in charging mode, in addition to the reduction achieved through removal of inductor winding, power switches, diodes, and additional heat sink of the conventional structures. A proof-of-concept prototype with power limits of 8.4 kW in charging and 20 kW in propulsion modes has been designed and validated at various power levels. The peak efficiencies for propulsion and regenerative braking operations are measured as 96.6% and 94.1%, respectively. Dodecagonal (12-sided) space vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM) schemes are characterized by the complete absence of (6n ± 1)th-order harmonics (for odd n) in the phase voltages, within the linear modulation range and beyond, including overmodulation. This paper presents a new topology suitable for the realization of such multilevel inverter schemes for induction motor (IM) drives, by cascading two-level inverters with flying-capacitor-inverter fed floating H-bridge cells. Now, any standard IM may be used to get the dodecagonal operation which hitherto was possible only with open-end winding IM. To minimize the current total harmonic distortion (THD), a strategy for synchronous PWM is also proposed. It is shown that the proposed method is capable of obtaining better THD figures, compared to conventional dodecagonal schemes. Hybrid cascade multilevel inverters combine semiconductor devices of different voltage ratings and technologies, which theoretically allow high efficiency to be achieved. The bottlenecks of these topologies are, however, the need for isolated supplies for the cells and the lack of modularity. This paper focuses on the design and control of high-resolution, high-efficiency multilevel inverters with simplified dc power supplies. It introduces several rules for systematically designing the dc voltages of the cells, for which all unsupplied capacitor voltages can be regulated. Six classes of inverters are obtained covering single- and three-phase, staircase and pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) inverters. New configurations of hybrid cascade multilevel inverters are obtained for each class. A double modulation strategy with two different frequencies is proposed that allows switching losses of PWM inverters to be reduced. Decoupled mechanisms are proposed for the total and internal energy balances. It is shown how to make the design robust by taking into account conversion losses and large dc-voltage imbalances in the design and control. An analysis of the maximum voltage utilization and efficiency of the resulting configurations is carried out. The leakage current in grid-interface converter systems presents a considerable issue in regard to safety and efficiency. The full-bridge inverter is a well-accepted topology in single-phase power conversion applications. The high-frequency pulsewidth modulation (PWM) modulation schemes are normally applied to the full-bridge topology for smaller ac filter size, which, however, generates a high-frequency dc-side leakage current, resulting in an enormous negative impact on dc components, such as photovoltaic panels and energy storage elements. In this paper, a modified full-bridge inverter topology to reduce the dc-side leakage current as well as to mitigate the ac-side common-mode electromagnetic interference noise is presented. Several considerations are discussed, such as the PWM modulation and filter design. A six-switch three-phase inverter is widely used in a high-power grid-connected system. However, the antiparallel diodes in the topology operate in the hard-switching state under the traditional control method causing severe switch loss and high electromagnetic interference problems. In order to solve the problem, this paper proposes a topology of the traditional six-switch three-phase inverter but with an additional switch and gave a new space vector modulation (SVM) scheme. In this way, the inverter can realize zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation in all switching devices and suppress the reverse recovery current in all antiparallel diodes very well. And all the switches can operate at a fixed frequency with the new SVM scheme and have the same voltage stress as the dc-link voltage. In grid-connected application, the inverter can achieve ZVS in all the switches under the load with unity power factor or less. The aforementioned theory is verified in a 30-kW inverter prototype. In this paper, a novel single-phase five-level inverter is proposed using coupled inductors. This inverter can output five-level voltage with only one dc source. No split of the dc voltage capacitor is needed, totally avoiding the voltage balancing problem in conventional multilevel inverters. The level of the output voltage is only half of the dc-link voltage in all conditions, leading to much reduced dv/dt . This inverter is based on the widely used three-arm power module and the voltage stresses on all the power switches are the same, making it very easy to construct. Operation mechanism of this inverter is analyzed and the possible switching patterns are investigated. Based on these analyses, a novel optimized modulation scheme is presented. With this modulation method, no dc components exist in the inductor currents, which is very helpful for minimization of the inductors. The novel multilevel circuit topologies are proposed in this paper. They are called multilevel circuit topologies based on switched-capacitor and diode-clamped converters (MCT-BSD). The topology structure and the operation principle, including the working states’ transitions of the diode-clamped part, the voltages balancing mechanism of the dc link capacitors, and the pulse width modulated carrier control strategy are given. The switched-capacitor circuits contribute not only to balancing the voltages of capacitors but also to boosting the output voltage with a certain input dc voltage. The validity of the MCT-BSD is verified by simulations and experiments. The results show that balancing the voltages of capacitors, boosting the output voltages, and operating under the three-phase condition are all realized effectively in the MCT-BSD. Despite the rapid growth of self-commutated inverter technology, the well-known current source inverter (CSI) has not achieved significant practical application so far. This raised the question regarding the fundamental criteria that could either prevent or promote the use of such inverters, especially considering emerging fields of application such as grid integration of renewable sources. This paper will, thus, focus on a systematic comparison between circuits based on the CSI and voltage source inverter (VSI). For such purpose, dimensionless benchmark factors were derived. The pulse width-modulated CSI with its inherent step-up capability alongside the indirect CSI (ICSI) with only two high-frequency switches features very interesting characteristics in terms of low switching losses and high inductor power density. However, both topologies show constraints with respect to the provision of reactive power. Two experimental setups have been implemented demonstrating the technical feasibility of different CSI solutions as a grid interface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
