To reduce the cost and size of the power converters, techniques of reconstructing three-phase current through a single current sensor have been employed in permanent-magnet synchronous motors. In existing studies, the reconstruction precision is largely affected by current reconstruction dead zones in the space vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM) plane, which requires additional algorithms to compensateeither by modifying PWM modulation strategy or by phase-shifting of PWM signal. In this article, a phase current reconstruction method for three-phase inverter with the modification of a twelve sector space vector pulsewidth modulation (TS-SVPWM) is proposed. By arranging a single current sensor on a circuit branch between two power switches, the proposed method can reconstruct the three-phase current of the voltage source inverter and avoid the dead zones located at the sector boundary region. This method can be realized not only with a single Hall-effect current sensor but also with a single shunt resistor, which can expand its application. The proposed method can be a fault-tolerance solution when there are phase current sensor faults. Beside, the three-phase current can be reconstructed when there are open-circuit faults in the power switches. Compared with previous methods, the proposed TS-SVPWM can reduce the phase current harmonics. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In single current sensor (SCS) methods, different phase currents should be acquired sequentially under the duration time of specific voltage vectors within each switching period. The sampling asynchronization caused due to sampling delay will inevitably result in the increase of phase current reconstruction error and deteriorate the control performance. According to the fundamental expression formula of three-phase currents in permanent magnet synchronous motor drives, the sampling-delay error (SDE) occurring in the traditional SCS techniques is analyzed in this article. It is demonstrated that the error oscillates at the stator electrical frequency, with the amplitude affected by both the switching frequency and motor speed. Correspondingly, a novel compensation method based on a δ–γ reference frame is presented. There is a simple proportional relationship between δ- and γ-axis error component after filtering the ac component by a notch filter. As a result, the SDE can be easily eliminated without extra complex compensation algorithms introduced. The prominent feature of the proposed method is that it is developed without necessity of motor parameters when compared with previous compensation techniques, making it a more robust solution. Current sensing techniques with reduced number of sensors attract a high interest from industry, for the possibility of cost reduction and sampling mismatch reduction. This article puts forward a new single current sensor (SCS) method for a permanent magnet synchronous motor three-phase current reconstruction, with a novel hybrid pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique introduced. This method is implemented by changing the position of SCS from dc bus to a current branch, and a modified space vector PWM technique is employed to realize the phase current reconstruction. Compared with traditional SCS control methods, the proposed method can relieve the measurement dead-zones at sector boundary region without introducing extra compensation algorithms. Besides, this method can be realized not only with a single hall-effect current sensor but also a single shunt resistor, which further expands the applications and increases the system reliability as well. This method is also available in other motor control with a two-level three-phase PWM voltage source inverter topology. Recently, dual three-phase drives have attracted an increasing attention with their high torque density, improved fault tolerance, and direct use of the off-the-shelf three-phase inverters. This article presents a carrier-based algorithm for the selective elimination of high-frequency pulsewidth modulation (PWM) torque harmonics in dual three-phase drives. The PWM control of the power converters is one of the main sources of high-frequency torque ripple in high-power electrical machines. The proposed technique selectively eliminates the torque-ripple harmonic components by applying a proper carrier phase shift between the two three-phase subsystems of the dual three-phase drive, considering the arbitrary phase displacements among the two subwindings. Two case studies of dual three-phase machines with phase displacements of 0 and π/6 are, respectively, analyzed under the most significant carrier phase-shift solutions. The torque performance improvement and the effect on the current ripple introduced by the proposed carrier phase-shifts are presented and validated by means of numerical, finite-element, and experimental results. For the purpose of increasing the reliability in a hostile environment, techniques of fault diagnosis have been reported for a three-phase voltage-source inverter (VSI). Based on the average current Park's vector method, this paper proposes a fuzzy-based fault diagnosis method for the VSI in the three-phase permanent-magnet synchronous motor drive. By utilizing the phase current information, the fault symptom variables are calculated by using the average current Park's vector method. The fuzzy logic approach is applied to process the fault symptom variables and obtain the faulty information of power switches. Compared with other fuzzy logic methods, the fuzzy logic design, fuzzy inputs, and fuzzy rules are different. The proposed fault diagnosis method can detect and locate not only the single or multiple open-circuit faults, but also the intermittent faults in power switches, which can improve the reliability of the motor drive system. Based on the phase current reconstruction method, this paper proposes a novel open-circuit fault diagnosis method for the low-power voltage source inverter in the three-phase permanent-magnet synchronous motor drive. Other than sampling the single dc-link current sensor, the zero voltage vector sampling method (ZVVSM) is adopted to implement the fault diagnosis. By placing the single current sensor at a special position, ZVVSM is able to sample current during the two zero voltage vectors and reconstruct the three-phase currents. The reconstructed three-phase currents are used to generate the diagnostic variables that can detect and locate the faulty power switches. The PWM modulation strategy remains unchanged in this method and the reconstructed phase currents are with less waveform distortion and less harmonic contents, which are suitable for the fault diagnosis. In this paper, a novel zero voltage vector sampling method (ZVVSM) is proposed, which can move the current reconstruction dead zones in low modulation region and sector boundary regions toward the outline of the space vector hexagon without modifying PWM signal. By arranging the single current sensor at a novel position, the proposed method is able to sample current in two zero voltage vectors (ZVV). ZVVSM avoids the complicated algorithms as well as the increase of the switching times, so that it is beneficial to the PMSM drive performance. A failure of insulation is one of the main reasons for electric machine outage. Online condition monitoring (CM) of an incipient degradation of turn insulation could eliminate the potential fault at the early stage, which is attractive but challenging. To improve the sensitivity and availability of CM, a noninvasive technique is presented in this article for the inverter-fed electric machine utilizing the existing high-frequency (HF) switching oscillations during pulsewidth modulation operation. First, the tail component sensitive to turn insulation is selected among the dominant oscillation modes in switching current, which can penetrate the winding of machine within an adequate frequency band (e.g., several hundreds of kHz). Then, a noncontact and simple HF sensor is developed for switching oscillation current capture. The CM system, procedure, and turn insulation state indicator are devised. After that, experimental work is carried out on a 3-kW permanent magnet synchronous machine test rig. The results show good sensitivity (about 2%) to the local incipient degradation of turn insulation with insusceptibility to the operating conditions. Dual three-phase (DTP) permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) have been utilized in many applications due to their outstanding performance. However, large stator current harmonics limit the further application of the DTP-PMSM due to the low impedance in the harmonic subspace. To solve this problem, this article proposes a current harmonic suppression strategy based on an extended state observer (ESO). A detailed analysis is carried out to demonstrate the disturbance rejection ability and robustness of the proposed method. The theoretical analysis also shows that the ESO strategy outstands the conventional proportional-integral controller and advanced proportional resonance (PR) controller in terms of harmonic reduction. The advantages are verified by simulation and experimental results under different operating conditions. The proposed strategy still works well when considering other factors that may cause harmonic distortion, such as magnetic circuit saturation, saliency ratio, over-modulation of the inverter, the voltage drop caused by electric devices, and dead time.
