Microgrid's voltage regulation is of particular importance during both grid-connected and islanded modes of operation. Especially, during the islanded mode, when the support from the upstream grid is lost, stable voltage regulation is vital for the reliable operation of critical loads. This paper proposes a robust and data-driven control approach for secondary voltage control of AC microgrids in the presence of uncertainties. To this end, unfalsified adaptive control (UAC) is utilized to select the best stabilizing controller from a set of pre-designed controllers with the minimum knowledge required from the microgrid. Two microgrid test systems are simulated in MATLAB to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method under different scenarios like load change and communication link failure. This paper presents a method for controlling the voltage of inverter-based Microgrids by proposing a new scale-free distributed cooperative controller. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed distributed cooperative controller is scale-free where is independent of any information about the communication system and the number of distributed generators, as such it works for any Microgrids with any size. Moreover, the communication network is modeled by a general time-varying graph which enhances the resilience of the proposed protocol against communication link failure, data packet loss, and arbitrarily fast plug and play operation in the presence of arbitrarily finite communication delays as the protocol does not require the knowledge of the upper bound on the delay. The stability analysis of the proposed protocol is provided. The proposed method is simulated on the CIGRE medium voltage Microgrid test system. The simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scale-free distributed nonlinear protocol for regulating voltage of Microgrids in the presence of communication failures, data packet loss, noise, and degradation. This paper proposes a direct damping feedback control method against power system oscillations under small or large disturbances. For a targeted oscillation mode, this control method continuously minimizes the difference between the real-time estimated damping ratio and a desired value by changing power outputs of selected inverter-based resources. The method adopts a proportional-integral controller whose parameters are tuned using a nonlinear single-input-single-output model on damping estimation and control with a single-oscillator equivalent regarding the targeted power system mode. Also, optimization of these controller parameters considers both robustness and time performance in damping control. The paper also proposes utilizing a “zero-th order” parametric resonance phenomenon to simplify the controller design. Tests on a small power system and a 140-bus 48-machine Northeast Power Coordinating Council system validate the effectiveness of the proposed damping controller utilizing battery-based energy storage systems. With the large-scale wind power integration into the power system, the inertia and damping characteristics of the system have been weakened, which is not conducive to fulfill the grid-friendly operation of wind power. Aiming at this, an adaptive control scheme combining virtual inertia control (VIC) and supplementary damping controller (SDC) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the mathematical model of wind grid-connected power system with VIC is established. Secondly, the polytopic linear parameter varying (LPV) system is built to describe the uncertainty of system operating points, and the gap metric-based nonlinear evaluation method is used for polytope vertex configuration. Next, Youla-Kucera parametrization are extended to polytopic LPV system to design an adaptive damping control, in which VIC and SDC are coordinated to provide damping and virtual inertia simultaneously. Finally, the proposed adaptive control scheme is compared with several existing control techniques to validate its effectiveness and advantages in suppressing system oscillation in the modified IEEE 39-bus system integrated with 2 wind turbines. In this paper, a novel distributed control strategy addressing a (feasible) psycho-social-physical welfare problem in islanded Direct Current (DC) smart grids is proposed. Firstly, we formulate a (convex) optimization problem that allows prosumers to share current with each other, taking into account the technical and physical aspects and constraints of the grid (e.g., stability, safety), as well as psycho-social factors (i.e., prosumers’ personal values). Secondly, we design a controller whose (unforced) dynamics represent the continuous time primal-dual dynamics of the considered optimization problem. Thirdly, a passive interconnection between the physical grid and the controller is presented. Global asymptotic convergence of the closed-loop system to the desired steady-state is proved and simulations based on collected data on psycho-social aspects illustrate and confirm the theoretical results. Power system control and transient stability analysis play essential roles in secure system operation. Control of power systems typically involves highly nonlinear and complex dynamics. Most of the existing works address such problems with additional assumptions in system dynamics, leading to a requirement for a complete and general solution. This paper, therefore, proposes a novel control framework for various power system control and stability problems leveraging a learning-based approach. The proposed framework includes a two-module structure that iteratively and jointly learns the candidate Lyapunov function and control law via deep neural networks in a learning module. Meanwhile, it guides the learning procedure towards valid results satisfying Lyapunov conditions in a falsification module. The introduced termination criteria ensure provable system stability. This control framework is verified through several studies handling different types of power system control problems. The results show that the proposed framework is generalizable and can simplify the control design for complex power systems with the stability guarantee and enlarged region of attraction. The synchronization requirement is a bottleneck of many distributed optimization algorithms, particularly for solving problems with computationally heterogeneous subproblems and during the occurrence of communication failure/delay. This paper presents a double-loop learning-aided asynchronous alternating direction method of multipliers (LA-ADMM) that has information prediction capability and handles a considerable level of asynchrony between subproblems. A momentum-extrapolation prediction-correction technique is developed to enable subproblems to predict their neighbors missing shared variable information instead of using the latest received values. An online streaming-based anomaly classification is designed to observe the performance of predicted data and control Lagrange multipliers update over the course of iterations. The proposed LA-ADMM reduces under-utilization of computation resources, especially if subproblems are computationally heterogeneous. This algorithm also enhances distributed optimization robustness against communication failure/delay that may result in a considerable level of asynchrony between subproblems. LA-ADMM is applied to solve the optimal power flow problem for several test systems. This paper deals with the transient stability of a grid-forming converter while embedding a current reference saturation strategy. The novelty of this work consists in investigating the impact of the current reference angle on the transient stability. In case of a balanced voltage sag, analytical formulas to estimate the critical clearing angle (CCA) and critical clearing time (CCT) while considering different values of the current reference angle are derived. It is demonstrated that the choice of this angle is constrained by the ability of the power converter to switch back to the voltage control mode. Based on that, its optimal value that enhances the transient stability and allows a switching from the saturated current control mode to the voltage control mode is calculated. Thereafter, the effectiveness of this optimal choice to guarantee the stability in case of a phase shift caused by a line re-closing event is verified. This paper proposes a multifunctional control strategy and associated control algorithms for distributed wind-turbine (WT) based nano-grids connected to a distorted utility-grid. The contribution is on a new strategy with innovative control algorithms to coordinate multiple converters for a multitasking operation of the nano-grids. The novelty is on a unique control design with feasibilities: maximizing the generated power from WT, maintaining power quality in both ac- and dc-sides under critical conditions of the power grid, and improving power quality against distortion from local nonlinear loads under a reduced switching frequency. A robust fast-dynamic predictive control method is developed for current controllers to fulfil the multifunction. Unconstrained deadbeat control inputs are derived in twofold targets: ensuring fast dynamic response and significantly reducing both the computation and switching frequency for finite predictive control. The control system is applied on a permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) WT-based nano-grid connected to a distorted utility-grid. An OPAL-RT-based real-time platform is used for comparative studies among the proportional integration (PI) control, finite predictive control (FS-MPC), and proposed control method. The performance verification exhibits the power quality improvement in both the nano- and utility-grids under critical conditions via high-performed regulation of currents, voltages, reactive power, and rotor-speed of the PMSG-WT. Line-switching operations introduce several concerns to microgrid operators since they trigger reliability and power quality issues in addition to increasing the wear and tear cost of switching devices. This paper proposes a novel methodology for achieving seamless line-switching in low-inertia islanded microgrids. The proposed methodology aims at mitigating the detrimental line-switching impacts by minimizing the power flow in the switched lines at the moments of executing the switching operations. The minimization of the power flow is realized by optimizing the droop control parameters of the DGs during the transition from one network topology to another. Besides, during executing a series of line-switching operations, the sequence of switching is also optimized to minimize the total switched power. While optimizing the line-switching execution sequence, the transitional droops are optimized for each line-switching operation within that sequence. A dynamic mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem is formulated to find both the optimized dynamic transitional droops and line-switching sequence simultaneously. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed seamless line-switching methodology where the switched power can be reduced by more than 80% for a single line-switching operation and 54% considering a series of four switch exchanges in addition to achieving several instances of zero-current switching. Short-circuit current analysis, especially transient current calculation, provides a basis for protection design. Because the control systems of inverter-interfaced renewable energy sources have a high degree of nonlinearity, it is difficult to analyze the transient current. To address this issue, in this work, a nonlinear differential equation of transient current of symmetrical fault is derived while considering the saturation characteristics of the current loop. Aiming at the solution of this nonlinear differential equation, an analysis method based on the phase plane is proposed, which makes use of the linear relationship between the current deviation and its derivative to simplify the direct determination of the nonlinear working state in the time domain. The analytical expression of the transient current can then be obtained by the inverse transform from the phase plane to the time domain. The share of inverter-connected renewable energy resources (RESs) is increasing in the grid, with these resources partially displacing conventional synchronous generators. This has resulted in increased variability of active power supply, reduced overall inertia, and increased spatial heterogeneity of inertia, leading to faster system frequency dynamics along with larger and more frequent frequency control events. These effects are expected to become increasingly more important in power system control in next-generation grids, which may conceivably be made up entirely of RESs. To mitigate these challenges, a fast, area-based hierarchical control strategy is proposed. This scheme partitions the power system into small areas, estimates local power imbalances, and corrects them by utilizing local inverter-based resources (IBRs). In cases where sufficient resources are not available locally, power is preferentially sourced from electrically close neighbours using an iterative distributed optimization scheme which preserves information privacy between areas. The proposed frequency control architecture can be retrofit onto existing control systems, and allows for flexibility in the amount of model information available to the designer.
