This paper summarizes simulation based technical feasibility and cost benefit analyses of a range of off-the-shelf electrical losses reduction intervention solutions in the Isle of Wight (IoW) 11 kV distribution network in the United Kingdom (UK), assessed over a period of 45 years. Based on presented results, the paper provides a brief commentary on the merits, drawbacks, risks and recommendations associated with each considered network intervention. Among considered network interventions, the transformer auto stop-start scheme, where one of the transformers among a pair at a primary substation would be switched depending on the substation's varying load, was found to be the optimal solution, i.e., in reducing technical losses significantly and may also have a reasonable Net Present Value (NPV) with a good rate of Return on Investment (RoI) when fully implemented. This paper proposes a method for studying the reliability implications of line switching operations in power systems. Two case studies are conducted on RTS and IEEE 118-bus system to illustrate this method. This method is designed to explore previously overlooked areas in reliability evaluation of line switching operations. Line removal test is proposed to obtain simulation data of the system, and then with risk analysis and impact analysis, six reliability indices are used to evaluate reliability performance of each transmission line in the system. Instead of the traditionally used mean value, this method introduces variance into analysis. Weibull distribution is used to reconstruct distributions of reliability indices which provide worst case scenario comparisons in reliability evaluation. Eventually, with results obtained from the proposed reliability evaluation method, categorization for line switching operations is introduced to classify all transmission lines based on their reliability performance. A hierarchical decentralized network reconfiguration approach to minimize power losses for smart distribution systems was presented in Part I. In this paper, the proposed approach is applied to four test distribution systems to examine its performance. A demonstration system consisting of the test system and distributed intelligent agents is built using MATLAB/Simulink to illustrate how the decentralized approach is implemented. Simulation results of the proposed approach are then compared with results of a centralized implementation and the harmony search method. It is shown that the decentralized approach can achieve similar results as other methods with significantly reduced computation time. The impacts of time-varying loads and faults are also studied through dynamic network reconfiguration on the 118-bus test system. Simulation results illustrate that dynamic network reconfiguration with time-ahead planning can determine the optimal configuration for each operating period to significantly reduce system energy losses. This paper presents a methodology for generating restoration sequences in distribution systems and microgrids with emphasis on deriving optimal switching times for remote control switches. Microgrid architecture considered are assumed to be operating in islanded single master mode. Control methods for handling the unbalance inherent in distribution systems using single-phase controlled PQ inverters were developed and incorporated in the proposed method. The problem of considering simultaneously both energy optimization and dynamic stability of the system, which is lacking in existing methods, was addressed by studying the transient behavior of microgrids based on extended electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) simulations and then approximate and incorporate these behaviors into the optimization formulation for restoration. The approach is based on multi-objective optimization of final restored load and total restoration time. The methodology was studied on a modified IEEE 123 node test feeder. An EMTP simulation in PSCAD of the formed microgrids was used to validate the accuracy of the dynamic and steady-state characteristics of the resulting systems. The discrete coordinate-descent algorithm is a practical approach that is currently used in centralized Volt/VAr Control (VVC) implementations, mainly due to its good performance and speed for real-time applications. Its viability is however challenged by the increasing number of distributed generation that contribute to the VVC solution, in addition to the conventional transformer taps and switched capacitors. This paper presents the exact computation of sensitivity factors that speed up the discrete coordinate-descent implementation, by significantly reducing the number of forward/backward substitutions in the current injection power flow method; the speed up is achieved without affecting the control setting quality of the original implementation. The optimality of the discrete coordinate-descent solutions is investigated by computing the gaps relative to mixed-integer linear programming set-points, derived from a polyhedral reformulation of the VVC problem. The sensitivity-based discrete coordinate-descent algorithm is tested starting from two initial points, the default one given by the current control set-points, and a continuous solution obtained from a linear approximation of the VVC problem. Numerical results on networks with up to 3145 nodes show that the sensitivity-based approach significantly improves the runtime of the discrete coordinate-descent algorithm, and that the linear programming initialization leads to VVC solutions with gaps relative to the mixed-integer set-points that are less than 0.5%. Smart inverters provide additional control capability to help optimize the operation of distribution systems. This paper proposes a framework for exact optimal active and reactive power dispatch of distributed photovoltaic (PV) generation, switched capacitors, and voltage regulators in large multi-phase unbalanced distribution systems. The objectives of the optimal dispatch are minimization of the energy loss, PV active power curtailment, and operations of capacitors and voltage regulators, in addition to elimination of voltage violations and reverse power flow. The optimization problem is formulated in rectangular coordinates as a nonlinear, nonconvex problem. Effective computational strategies are proposed to allow the application of predictor-corrector primal-dual interior point method to solve optimization problems in real-time with a large number of constraints and variables, including discrete variables corresponding to switched capacitors and voltage regulators. The accuracy of the numerical solution and the ability to implement the proposed framework are validated using the unbalanced multi-phase IEEE 34-bus and EPRI 2,998-bus distribution systems with 15-minute load and PV data. A novel method is proposed to locate the source of events in power distribution systems by using distribution-level phasor measurement units, a.k.a., micro-PMUs. An event in this paper is defined rather broadly to include any major change in any component across the distribution feeder. The goal is to enhance situational awareness in distribution grid by keeping track of the operation (or misoperation) of various grid equipment, assets, distribution energy resources, loads, etc. The proposed method is built upon the compensation theorem in circuit theory to generate an equivalent circuit to represent the event by using voltage and current synchrophasors that are captured by micro-PMUs. Importantly, this method makes critical use of not only magnitude but also synchronized phase angle measurements, thus, it justifies the need to use micro-PMUs, as opposed to ordinary RMS-based voltage and current sensors. The proposed method can work with data from as a few as only two micro-PMUs. The effectiveness of the developed method is demonstrated through computer simulations on the IEEE 123-bus test system, and also on micro-PMUs measurements from a real-life 12.47 kV test feeder in Riverside, CA. Most existing approaches for distribution network reconfiguration assume that the distribution system is (three-phase) balanced and a single-phase equivalent is used. However, distribution feeders are usually unbalanced due to a large number of single-phase loads, nonsymmetrical conductor spacing, and three-phase line topology. This paper builds on our previous work and studies feeder reconfiguration for unbalanced distribution systems with distributed generation (DG). The three-phase bus locations and sizes of DG units are determined using sensitivity analysis and nonlinear programming, respectively, and distribution feeders are reconfigured every hour based on the status of time-varying loads, output power from DG units and faults on the network while minimizing the energy loss costs and DG operating costs. The European Union is targeting a 20% share of energy from renewable resources by 2020, and this increase is in turn expected to lead to operational challenges that will require various congestion management actions by system operators. In this paper, we deal with topology control of the transmission network as a congestion management resource and evaluate the impacts of topology control on the European electricity network. To do this, we co-optimize unit commitment and transmission switching over 24 h, and we use a decomposition scheme to tackle the resulting large-scale problem. Our analysis is conducted on different scenarios of load and renewable power generation. We find that topology control results in significant cost savings within Europe which tend to be inversely related to net load. Optimal transmission switching (OTS) optimizes simultaneously the generation dispatch and the topology of a power system. It has been shown that taking some transmission lines out of service can significantly reduce the operating cost of the system while respecting the traditional deterministic N-1 security criterion of operational reliability. However, topology modifications could adversely affect probabilistic security metrics. The operational reliability of a power system can be translated into a cost by multiplying the expected energy not served by the value of lost load. This paper therefore explores whether it is possible to maintain a positive economic balance with OTS when considering not only the cost of generation but also the expected socio-economic cost of disruptions in the supply. This is done in two steps: the computation of an N-1 secure OTS and then the calculation of a probabilistic estimate of the operational reliability of the OTS solution. Based on the results obtained with two test systems, it is shown that OTS tends to significantly degrade probabilistic measures of security. It is thus not obvious that OTS can lead to a positive economic balance, even when N-1 security is enforced. Implementing automation system in distribution networks needs a huge investment that usually cannot be funded entirely in a short period of time. So distribution companies (DISCOs) should develop long-term plans to equip their network with automation technologies as far as economically justifiable. Aiming to provide a methodology for development such plans, this paper presents a novel multistage planning model for implementing distribution automation system considering all main hardware and software infrastructures. The proposed method optimally determines the type, location, and time in which an equipment or infrastructure must be added to network considering the network capacity expansion plan. The objective function of the planning problem is to maximize the net present value of the DISCO's profit in the planning time horizon. In this method, the optimization problem is solved using the genetic algorithm approach as a promising technique in solving the mixed integer nonlinear programming problems. In this paper, a flexible optimization-based framework for intentional islanding is presented. The decision is made of which transmission lines to switch in order to split the network while minimizing disruption, the amount of load shed, or grouping coherent generators. The approach uses a piecewise linear model of AC power flow, which allows the voltage and reactive power to be considered directly when designing the islands. Demonstrations on standard test networks show that solution of the problem provides islands that are balanced in real and reactive power, satisfy AC power flow laws, and have a healthy voltage profile. Deploying shunt capacitor banks in distribution systems can effectively reduce the power loss and provide additional benefits for system operation. In practice, the power loss on distribution transformers can account for a considerable portion of the overall loss. This paper proposes a method for optimal placement of capacitor banks to the distribution transformers to reduce power loss. The capacitor bank locations are considered at the low-side of transformers. The net present value (NPV) criterion is adopted to evaluate the cost benefit of the capacitor installation project. First, an explicit formula for directly calculating the power loss of radial distribution systems is derived. Then, the optimal capacitor bank placement is formulated as a mixed-integer programming (MIP) model maximizing the NPV of the project subject to certain constraints. The model is suitable for being solved by commercial MIP packages, and the operational control of the capacitor banks to maximize the power loss reduction can be simply achieved by local automatic switching according to VAR measurements. The proposed method has been practically applied in the Macau distribution system, and the simulation results show that the proposed method is computationally efficient, and a considerable positive NPV can be obtained from the optimal capacitor bank placement. This paper presents a comprehensive mathematical model to solve the restoration problem in balanced radial distribution systems. The restoration problem, originally modeled as mixed integer nonlinear programming, is transformed into a mixed integer second-order cone programming problem, which can be solved efficiently using several commercial solvers based on the efficient optimization technique family branch and bound. The proposed mathematical model considers several objectives in a single objective function, using parameters to preserve the hierarchy of the different objectives: 1) maximizing the satisfaction of the demand, 2) minimizing the number of switch operations, 3) prioritizing the automatic switch operation rather than a manual one, and 4) prioritizing especial loads. General and specialized tests were carried out on a 53-node test system, and the results were compared with other previously proposed algorithms. In this paper, an efficient methodology is proposed to deal with segmented-time reconfiguration problem of distribution networks coupled with segmented-time reactive power control of distributed generators. The target is to find the optimal dispatching schedule of all controllable switches and distributed generators' reactive powers in order to minimize comprehensive cost. Corresponding constraints, including voltage profile, maximum allowable daily switching operation numbers (MADSON), reactive power limits, and so on, are considered. The strategy of grouping branches is used to simplify the formulated mathematical problem and a hybrid particle swarm optimization (HPSO) method is presented to search the optimal solution. Fuzzy adaptive inference is integrated into basic HPSO method in order to avoid being trapped in local optima. The proposed fuzzy adaptive inference-based hybrid PSO algorithm (FAHPSO) is implemented in VC++ 6.0 program language. A modified version of the typical 70-node distribution network and several real distribution networks are used to test the performance of the proposed method. This paper proposes a two-level voltage controller for large-scale power systems. The aim of the controller is to maintain a near-optimal voltage profile in the transmission network by coordinating discrete reactive power (var) control devices in the system. The controller is targeted for implementation in electric power transmission utility companies where most of the voltage controls are coordinated by switching of discrete var devices such as shunt capacitor and reactor banks and transformer banks load tap changers (LTCs). By effectively dividing the controller responsibilities between local substation controls and a central coordinator at control center level, the design is aimed at voltage control of large-scale power systems. At local level, the substation controllers maintain their respective substation bus voltages by local power-flow-like computations using mostly local PMU measurements. The central coordinator computes and provides the voltage set-points to the substation controllers and also coordinates by enabling or disabling the local controllers as needed. The controller is being designed towards prototype implementation in Southern California Edison (SCE), starting with local controllers at specific substations in the first stage. In power system operation, network topology optimization (NTO) based on bus-branch model and opening/closing transmission lines has been previously proposed and utilized as a congestion mitigating tool to reduce operation cost. The bus-branch model cannot provide a detailed picture of all substation switching actions (e.g., bus splitting) that are well known to operators. In this paper, an NTO model based on substation and node-breaker modeling is presented to relieve congestion and consequently reduce cost. The substation reconfiguration provides a practical and realistic picture of switching actions, while having a higher flexibility in switching actions. However, due to introducing more number of nodes and binary variables associated with breakers, solving an NTO model would be challenging. Therefore, some tightening bounds are presented to maintain the reliability and accelerate the computations. Furthermore, using sensitivity analysis of substations, a method to cluster the network to congestion zones is then employed to determine suitable candidate substations for reconfiguration, thus significantly reducing the number of binary variables associated with breaker switchings. The results of applying the NTO model to the IEEE 118-bus test system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method to remove congestion, while utilizing less number of switching actions compared to bus-branch switching. The subsynchronous resonance (SSR) problem may become more serious with the continuous evolvement of a series-compensated power system. Consequently, the existing SSR mitigation scheme might no longer keep the system stable. This issue has been encountered by Shangdu Power Plant, where the deployed supplementary excitation damping controllers (SEDCs) that well stabilized the system before cannot maintain torsional stability after the recent change occurred in the power system. Therefore, a combined mitigation scheme of SEDC and generator terminal subsynchronous damping controller (GTSDC) is proposed in this paper to regain system stability. SEDC provides electrical damping by modulating the excitation voltage at the rotor side. Meanwhile, GTSDC can damp SSR via injecting super-synchronous and subsynchronous currents into the generator stator. Field tests have proven the effectiveness of this combined scheme in addressing the deteriorated SSR issue. Eigenvalue analysis indicates that the combined scheme can provide enough positive damping for the system under any operating condition. Thanks to the low investment of SEDC and the flexibility of GTSDC, this combined scheme provides an economical and scalable solution for SSR mitigation, especially when the target system changes constantly. Distribution system reconfiguration (DSR) is a multi-objective, nonlinear problem. This paper introduces a new, fast, nondominated sorting genetic algorithm (FNSGA) for the purpose of solving the DSR problem in normal operation by satisfying all objectives simultaneously with a relatively small number of generations and relatively short computation time. The objectives of the problem are to minimize real power losses and improve the voltage profile and load balancing index with minimum switching operations. Instead of generating several ranks from the nondominated set of solutions, this algorithm deals with only one rank; then the most suitable solution is chosen according to the operator's wishes. If there is no preference and all objectives have the same degree of importance, the best solution is determined by simply considering the sum of the normalized objective values. Also, a guided mutation operation is applied instead of a random one to speed up convergence. Radial system topology is satisfied using graph theory by formulating the branch-bus incidence matrix (BBIM) and checking the rank of each topology. To test the algorithm, it was applied to two widely studied test systems and a real one. The results show the efficiency of this algorithm as compared to other methods in terms of achieving all the goals simultaneously with reasonable population and generation sizes and without using a mutation rate, which is usually problem-dependent. This paper presents a model for microgrid optimal scheduling considering multi-period islanding constraints. The objective of the problem is to minimize the microgrid total operation cost which comprises the generation cost of local resources and cost of energy purchase from the main grid. The microgrid optimal scheduling problem is decomposed into a grid-connected operation master problem and an islanded operation subproblem. The microgrid capability in operating in the islanded mode for multiple hours is scrutinized by a T-\tau islanding criterion. The integer scheduling decisions determined in the master problem will be examined against the microgrid islanding feasibility in the subproblem. The scheduling decisions will be revised using proper islanding cuts if sufficient generation is not available to guarantee a feasible islanding. Islanding cuts will revise generating units, energy storage systems, and adjustable loads schedules. Any change in the schedule of adjustable loads outside the operating time interval specified by consumers is penalized by an inconvenience factor in the objective. This paper deals with the management of voltage constraints in active distribution systems that host a significant amount of distributed generation (DG) units. To this end we propose a centralized optimization approach which aims at minimizing the amount of MW curtailment of non-firm DG to remove voltage constraints. The salient feature of this approach is that it comprehensively and properly models the full variety of possible control means (i.e., DG active/reactive power including DG shut-down, on load tap changing transformer ratio, shunt capacitor, and remotely controlled switches or breakers), most of which having a discrete behavior. We develop and compare the performances of two optimization models on a snapshot basis for various distribution systems up to 1089 buses. In particular we show that the use of remotely controlled switches so as to transfer DG between feeders in case of voltage constraints may lead to significant reduction of the DG curtailment. Telecontrol of distribution switching devices is recognized as a major means for reducing interruption duration after a fault occurrence in modern distribution systems, since it allows one to isolate the faulted sections and to restore the healthy ones as quickly as possible. In order to reduce interruption frequency as well, it is necessary to increase the number of series automatic circuit breakers. Further benefits in terms of service continuity improvement can be obtained by allowing islanded operation of relatively small portions of distribution network (microgrids) in the presence of distributed energy resources in order to supply the local load autonomously during upstream faults. This paper aims to describe an innovative systematic method and its related analytical formulation to evaluate distribution system reliability indices accounting for advanced operation practices such as those based on telecontrol and islanding. Due to the variety of distribution generation (DG) sizes and technologies connecting to distribution networks, and the concerns associated with out-of phase reclosing, anti-islanding continues to be an issue where no clear solution exists. This paper presents an autoground approach that was proposed in the context of an IEEE working group on best practices for DG protection. A prototype system was constructed using standard distribution apparatus and a recloser controller, and it was tested on the utility's distribution test line. Results show that the anti-islanding detection time is approximately a cycle longer than the delay associated with application of the autoground. Once the autoground was applied, the DG was disconnected within 1 cycle on overcurrent protection. The solution is inherently scalable, applicable to all DG types, is configurable to various reclosing practices and does not require additional equipment or settings changes at the producer's site. This paper presents a methodology for integrated planning of real-life medium-voltage networks based on the utility planning concepts. The research is motivated by the need to develop a methodology that would line-up with utility day-to-day businesses and could be applied in real-life. Its core is a two-stage optimization process, where the first stage solves the static investment optimization and the second stage considers operational problem. A probabilistic decision tree approach is proposed for the solution of the entire problem to consider uncertainties in the planning period. The overall formulation is given first, which is followed by details of the investment model and outlines of the proposed operation planning. The novelty of the investment problem, which determines optimal network reinforcements, is explicit modeling of network security constraints of radially operated networks, whilst considering different operating regimes. Additional novel features include modeling of real-life supply restoration rules through network reconfiguration and optimal placement of new switching devices, as well as consideration of “customer flows” on the network. Connection of new distributed generation and demand centers and construction of circuits on new corridors are also included. Two investment models are formulated as mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problems, tested on several MV networks and compared with established methods. This paper presents two hybrid heuristic methods for reconfiguration of the radial electrical distribution system. The first stage of the proposed techniques is a circular minimum-branch-current updating mechanism to bypass the local optimum points. Then, by a circular neighbor-chain updating technique, the best known configuration is obtained. The proposed approaches have been tested on the six well-known electrical distribution networks. The results show that the proposed methods have remarkably achieved the best-known optimum solution with more reliability, accuracy and efficiency than many other published methods. A high impedance fault (HIF) is characterized by a small, nonlinear, random, unstable, and widely varying fault current in a power distribution system. HIFs draw very low fault currents, and hence are not always effectively cleared by conventional overcurrent relays. Various schemes are proposed to detect such faults. This paper presents a method to detect HIFs using a tool based on mathematical morphology (MM). The method is implemented alongside the conventional overcurrent relay at the substation to improve the performance of this relay in detecting HIFs. It is rigorously tested on standard test systems using PSCAD/EMTDC® to generate test waveforms, and Matlab® to implement the method. Due to the lack of feeder corridors, the Chinese utility companies frequently choose the technique of putting multiple overhead feeders on a same tower (MFST) to meet the load demand in a heavy load area. In many situations, the distance among the feeders of MFST in an electrical distribution network (EDN) is usually too small to meet the requirements of safety regulation for repairing and maintenance. Therefore, when a fault occurs on a feeder of MFST, the other feeders have to be in a triggered passive outage (TPO) state to assist the repairing of the failed feeder. This paper presents a reliability evaluation algorithm for EDNs containing MFST using the section technique. The definition of TPO and the equivalent TPO rate and TPO duration are also proposed. Based on the TPO parameters and the section technique, the reliability evaluation algorithm containing the MFST can be obtained. Case studies on the modified RBTS-BUS6 and the EDNs of three districts in Dongguan city, China, show that the MFST has a significant impact on the EDN reliability and should be considered in the reliability evaluation. Electrical distribution network reconfiguration is a complex combinatorial optimization process aimed at finding a radial operating structure that minimizes the system power loss while satisfying operating constraints. In this paper, a harmony search algorithm (HSA) is proposed to solve the network reconfiguration problem to get optimal switching combination in the network which results in minimum loss. The HSA is a recently developed algorithm which is conceptualized using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. It uses a stochastic random search instead of a gradient search which eliminates the need for derivative information. Simulations are carried out on 33- and 119-bus systems in order to validate the proposed algorithm. The results are compared with other approaches available in the literature. Frequency in large power systems is usually controlled by adjusting the production of generating units in response to changes in the load. As the amount of intermittent renewable generation increases and the proportion of flexible conventional generating units decreases, a contribution from the demand side to primary frequency control becomes technically and economically desirable. One of the reasons why this has not been done was the perceived difficulties in dealing with many small loads rather than a limited number of generating units. In particular, the cost and complexity associated with two-way communications between many loads and the control center appeared to be insurmountable obstacles. This paper argues that this two-way communication is not essential and that the demand can respond to the frequency error in a manner similar to the generators. Simulation results show that, using this approach, the demand side can make a significant and reliable contribution to primary frequency response while preserving the benefits that consumers derive from their supply of electric energy. This paper proposes a new transmission-constrained unit commitment method that combines the cost-efficient but computationally demanding stochastic optimization and the expensive but tractable interval optimization techniques to manage uncertainty on the expected net load. The proposed hybrid unit commitment approach applies the stochastic formulation to the initial operating hours of the optimization horizon, during which the wind forecasts are more accurate, and then switches to the interval formulation for the remaining hours. The switching time is optimized to balance the cost of unhedged uncertainty from the stochastic unit commitment against the cost of the security premium of the interval unit commitment formulation. These hybrid, stochastic, and interval formulations are compared using Monte Carlo simulations on a modified 24-bus IEEE Reliability Test System. The results demonstrate that the proposed unit commitment formulation results in the least expensive day-ahead schedule among all formulations and can be solved in the same amount of time as a full stochastic unit commitment. However, if the range of the switching time is reduced, the hybrid formulation in the parallel computing implementation outperforms the stochastic formulation in terms of computing time. The uptake of variable megawatts from photovoltaics (PV) challenges distribution system operation. The primary problem is significant voltage rise in the feeder that forces existing voltage control devices such as on-load tap-changers and line voltage regulators to operate continuously. The consequence is the deterioration of the operating life of the voltage control mechanism. Also, conventional non-coordinated reactive power control can result in the operation of the line regulator at its control limit (runaway condition). This paper proposes an optimal reactive power coordination strategy based on the load and irradiance forecast. The objective is to minimize the number of tap operations so as not to reduce the operating life of the tap control mechanism and avoid runaway. The proposed objective is achieved by coordinating various reactive power control options in the distribution network while satisfying constraints such as maximum power point tracking of PV and voltage limits of the feeder. The option of voltage support from PV plant is also considered. The problem is formulated as constrained optimization and solved through the interior point technique. The existing microgrid-based distribution system restoration methods follow traditional restoration criteria, which achieve a maximum coverage of distribution systems. In extreme conditions (e.g., natural disasters and physical and cyber attacks), the traditional restoration plans could pose additional financial and security risks to local utility customers. That is, restored services could be further interrupted by subsequent outages in the extended event. To address such resilience challenges, this paper proposes the formation of adaptive multimicrogrids as part of the critical service restoration strategy. The proposed strategy comprises microgrid formation (MF) and load switching sequence (LSS) steps. The MF forms multiple microgrids with minimum overall scale and radial or looped topologies and includes optimally positioned mobile emergency resources to address potential risks in extreme conditions. The LSS determines a proper load switching sequence for ensuring the system dynamic performance in the restoration process. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified by a case study on the IEEE 132-node test feeder system and the time-domain simulation in MATLAB Simulink. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Remote-controlled switches (RCSs) play an important role in prompt service restoration of distribution systems (DSs). However, the cost of RCSs and the vast footprint of DSs limit widespread utilization of RCSs. In this paper, we present a new approach to RCS allocation for improving the performance of restoration and optimizing reliability benefits with reasonable RCS cost. Specifically, the optimal number and locations of to-be-upgraded switches can be determined with different objectives: maximizing the reduction of customer interruption cost; maximizing the reduction of system average interruption duration index; or maximizing the amount of loads that can be restored using the upgraded RCSs. We show that these models can actually be formulated as mixed-integer convex programming problems. We further introduce a novel method to equivalently transform and efficiently solve each of them. The global optimum can thus be computed within a reasonable amount of time. The IEEE 33-node and 123-node test systems are used to demonstrate the proposed models and algorithms. The dc symmetrical component method is introduced for the analysis and control of bipolar dc distribution systems under asymmetrical operation. This method is an extension of the classical symmetrical component theory in three-phase ac power systems. The asymmetrical voltage and current in the positive and negative poles are decomposed into symmetrical components in common and differential modes. The equivalent circuit for each mode is derived, which forms decoupled mode networks. Consequently, it allows for independent investigation of each mode, and provides an insightful view of the static and dynamic behavior of a bipolar dc power system. The dc symmetrical component method is a general approach which is applicable to different aspects of system design. As an example, an enhanced common-mode voltage regulation scheme is described. It suppresses common-mode LC resonance by adding active damping control, and reduces common-mode impedance to improve power quality and voltage stability. Delta-connected switched capacitors are common in three-wire MV distribution systems as found in Europe and Australia but the majority of past studies focus on star-connected capacitors as applied in North America. This study presents a comprehensive optimization based sequential strategy and a multi-objective optimization based real-time strategy for the optimal placement and control of delta-connected switched capacitors. Considering load variations, a comprehensive optimization for capacitor placement is formulated to maximize the net annual returns from network loss reduction and capacity release. A sequential strategy based on loss sensitivity analysis is presented for efficient capacitor placement on large-scale unbalanced distribution networks. Then a capacitor control strategy is proposed to simultaneously minimize network losses, voltage deviations and voltage unbalance factor (VUF) while a weighted sum method reflects the preferences on the mutually conflicting control objectives. For the mixed integer programming (MIP) problems of capacitor placement and control, an improved backward/forward sweep (BSFS) load flow based particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is used. Finally, the robustness of the proposed capacitor placement and control strategies are verified by comparison against existing popular schemes through detailed simulations over 24 h on a real unbalanced Australian MV network. The authors discuss an article by M. Lavorato and colleagues on imposing radiality constraints in power distribution system optimization problems. They claim that the paper lacks any reference where an alternative mathematical formulation is proposed to deal with transfer nodes or zero-injection nodes. In their opinion, the possibility for transfer nodes is not realistic, being in opposition to the usual operation of the medium voltage (MV) systems where all the transfer nodes are connected to.

The electrical power grid is a critical infrastructure that plays a key role in supporting modern society. The reliability of power systems needs to be continuously maintained to deliver high-quality electric services. Due to the tremendous amounts of potential investment demanded for constructing new electricity transmission facilities, electric utilities need economical solutions that can enable them to supply electricity to their customers in a cost-effective and reliable way. Dynamic thermal rating (DTR) and network topology optimization (NTO) technologies aim to maximize the use of existing transmission assets and to provide flexible ways to enhance reliability of the power system. In this study, the DTR and NTO are incorporated into the power grid reliability assessment procedure using the sequential Monte Carlo simulation. Multiple case studies are carried out based on the modified IEEE RTS-79 and IEEE RTS-96 systems, accounting for long-term multiarea weather conditions. The numerical results indicate that with the incorporation of DTR and NTO, the reliability of power systems can be improved. Proliferation of renewable energy resources in distribution networks has captured distribution companies' attention towards more active management tools. Thanks to the smart grid paradigm, hourly network reconfiguration, which is still among immature ideas, can bring the activeness required to handle fluctuating output of renewable resources. The aim of this study is to analyze the worthiness of the hourly reconfiguration in the presence of renewable energy resources. For doing so, a mathematical model is devised to minimize daily network losses via applying hourly reconfigurations. The model is a mixed integer second-order cone programming problem and is solved via MOSEK solver. The electrical demand variations as well as renewable power generation fluctuations during a day are taken into account. Load curtailment programs including direct load control and demand response allow system operators to directly and/or indirectly reduce a portion of total customer demand. One system application which can be improved by implementation of load curtailment is service restoration. As such, this work presents a problem formulation, solution algorithm, and simulation results for service restoration of power distribution systems incorporating load curtailment of in-service customers via direct load control. It is shown that the addition of load curtailment allows for one or more of the following: a reduction of the total number of switch operations required, an increase to the number of customers served, and/or an increase to the total amount of load restored.
