After any major blackout, recreating the exact scene is one of the crucial but foundation steps in postmortem analysis. This helps in identifying and understanding the exact causes and sequence of events to avoid such failures in the future. Rather, power system restoration demands critical skills which involves deployment of appropriate strategies based on information about various factors, notably the extent and duration of the blackout, location of black-started units, interconnections with neighbouring systems, generator capabilities, and selecting appropriate restoration paths. The actual execution of the restoration plan consists of many surprises of unique nature and a lot of learning’s to avoid future occurrences of such incidents. The restoration efforts and failure of Mumbai grid failure on October 12, 2020, are highlighted in this paper. The paper first proposes formulating the dynamic models to get a better insight of the restoration process in the event of critical issues during this incident. The various challenges faced in systematic recovery of such a large system and lessons learnt from it forms focus of the paper. The paper also discusses factors not covered in existing literature, such as weather, fuel availability, and water mass oscillations which plays an important role in the restoration. The high penetration of renewables has sparked new oscillatory concerns in hybrid AC/DC grids. Knowledge of the oscillation regarding its source and propagation mechanism, is crucial to system operation. In this respect, the frequency-domain modal analysis (FMA) provides a way (e.g., participation factor) to extract these oscillation properties, and has been widely applied in converter-based AC grids. Compared to AC grids, oscillation properties of hybrid AC/DC grids are much more complex. Such complexity mainly originates from the diversity of oscillation propagation behaviors in hybrid AC/DC grids, where a distinctive local-area oscillation will emerge. Therefore, a dedicated oscillation propagation analysis for hybrid AC/DC grids is desired, which is the main focus of this paper. First, the mechanism of the distinctive local-area oscillation is analyzed considering AC/DC coupled dynamics of converters. Then, a systematic method for the oscillation propagation analysis is presented, where indices for characterizing the local-area oscillation and its impact area are established. Finally, some propagation properties are discussed, by which a strategy for the online oscillation source locating is designed. The paper proposes a control scheme to improve the dynamic response of power systems through the automatic regulators of converter-based Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). In this scheme, both active and reactive power control of DERs are varied to regulate both frequency and voltage, as opposed to current practice where frequency and voltage controllers are decoupled. To assess the proposed control against the current state-of-art, the paper also defines a metric that captures the combined effect of frequency/voltage response at any given bus of the network. Results indicate that the proposed control strategy leads to a significant improvement in the stability and performance of the overall power system. These results are based on a comprehensive case study carried out by employing a modified version of the IEEE 39-bus benchmark system, where a portion of the synchronous machines is substituted by converter-interfaced DERs. The impact on the proposed control of load models, the $R/X$ ratio of network lines, as well as the level of DER penetration to the grid, are properly evaluated and conclusions are duly drawn. This paper proposes an optimization approach for day-ahead reactive power planning to improve voltage security in transmission networks. The problem is formulated as a voltage-secure multi-period optimal reactive power dispatch (MP-ORPD) problem. The optimization approach searches for optimal set-points of dynamic and static reactive power (var) resources. Specifically, the output includes set-points for switching shunts, transformer taps, and voltage magnitudes at the regulated buses. The primary goal is to maximize the dynamic reactive power reserve of the system, by minimizing the reactive power supplied by synchronous generators. As the size of the MP-ORPD problem increases significantly with increasing number of contingencies and time periods, efficiency is crucial for practical applications. In this paper, a decomposition technique based on consensus and alternating optimization, where integer variable targets are obtained via MILP, is used to partition the MP-ORPD problem into a set of subproblems, which can be solved in parallel to reduce the computation time. The proposed MP-ORPD problem and its solution algorithm are integrated into the EPRI-VCA software. The results of various power networks of large electric utilities in the Eastern interconnection demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in providing preventive control schedules. This paper proposes a dynamic valuation framework to determine the opportunity value of battery capacity degradation in grid applications based on the internal degradation mechanism and utilization scenarios. The proposed framework follows a dynamic programming approach and includes a piecewise linear value function approximation solution that solves the optimization problem over a long planning horizon. The paper provides two case studies on price arbitrage and frequency regulation using real market and system data to demonstrate the broad applicability of the proposed framework. Results show that the battery lifetime value is critically dependent on both the external market environment and its internal state of health. On the grid service side, results show that second-life batteries can provide more than 50% of the value compared to new batteries, and frequency regulation provides two times more revenue than price arbitrage throughout the battery lifetime. There is an opportunity in modern power systems to explore the demand flexibility by incentivizing consumers with dynamic prices. In this paper, we quantify demand flexibility using an efficient tool called time-varying elasticity, whose value may change depending on the prices and decision dynamics. This tool is particularly useful for evaluating the demand response potential and system reliability. Recent empirical evidences have highlighted some abnormal features when studying demand flexibility, such as delayed responses and vanishing elasticities after price spikes. Existing methods fail to capture these complicated features because they heavily rely on some predefined (often over-simplified) regression expressions. Instead, this paper proposes a model-free methodology to automatically and accurately derive the optimal estimation pattern. We further develop a two-stage estimation process with Siamese long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. Here, a LSTM network encodes the price response, while the other network estimates the time-varying elasticities. In the case study, the proposed framework and models are validated to achieve higher overall estimation accuracy and better description for various abnormal features when compared with the state-of-the-art methods. The paper introduces the concept of complex frequency. The imaginary part of the complex frequency is the variation with respect of a synchronous reference of the local bus frequency as commonly defined in power system studies. The real part is defined based on the variation of the voltage magnitude. The latter term is crucial for the correct interpretation and analysis of the variation of the frequency at each bus of the network. The paper also develops a set of differential equations that describe the link between complex powers and complex frequencies at network buses in transient conditions. No simplifications are assumed except for the usual approximations of the models utilized for the transient stability analysis of power systems. This paper establishes an instantaneous voltage model to illustrate the dynamic characteristics of grid voltage in electromagnetic time scale affected by power-electronic interfaced voltage regulatory devices with two typical categories of control systems, i.e., power-current cascading control and power synchronization control, exemplified by the STATCOM and virtual synchronous condenser (VSCON) respectively. In this paper, a linearized instantaneous voltage model is firstly established to analyze the impact paths of control loops in the STATCOM and VSCON. Based on the model, the dynamic process of grid voltage is divided into three stages. Various factors on the dynamic process of grid voltage are analyzed, especially cascading control loops prior to the functioning of AC voltage control. Moreover, stiffness characteristic is proposed to evaluate the effects of power electronic interfaced voltage regulatory devices with different control structures. A suitable probabilistic scenario set of load demand and natural characteristics of renewable energy is becoming a crucial issue in power system planning studies. Properly addressing the impact of potentially thousands of residential PV plants on the resilience and reliability needs of substations necessitates the representation of inherent relations between photovoltaics and the load throughout the long-term planning period. The optimal planning of substation expansions is achievable through proper modeling of input parameters which describes the characteristics of the service areas. In this paper, the co-existence of PV plants and the load in a service area under three different states such as daytime with clear-sky and no-fault, daytime with abnormal events, and nighttime are incorporated into the stochastic dynamic optimization problem by using scenario-based approach. The scenario tree of the problem is branched from three different bases simultaneously instead of only one as in conventional approach. This paper also combines the risk-constrained stochastic dynamic SEP problem and Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) framework under one roof. This paper develops a supervised learning of overcomplete dictionaries (SLOD) to efficiently perform online analysis and prediction of dynamic stability (DSP) in large power systems. To this end, multiple post-contingency signals with varying faults, load and generator switching are acquired by phasor measurement units (PMUs) based monitoring of all generators to form the training dataset. The SLOD approach then jointly learns a sparse feature dictionary and a stability status classifier using dynamic singular value decomposition (D-KSVD) and orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP). The aim is to learn features of the signals while adding a stability status term to the optimization problem. This enabled stable/unstable classes to be represented. The proposed SLOD manages to improve online DSP shortly after a contingency. It does this without any prior assumptions or signal preprocessing except for dynamic state estimation to get rotor speed from generator terminal PMU data. Test results on the IEEE 2-area 4 machines, 39 and 68 -bus test systems demonstrate that the SLOD gives more than satisfactory performance in all cases (i.e., ∼99.99% accuracy, ∼99.99% reliability, and 100% security) compared to Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox™ -MATLAB that use time-series-based high-dimensional stability indices as input for DSP. As power systems are undergoing a significant transformation with more uncertainties, less inertia and closer to operation limits, there is increasing risk of large outages. Thus, there is an imperative need to enhance grid emergency control to maintain system reliability and security. Towards this end, great progress has been made in developing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based grid control solutions in recent years. However, existing DRL-based solutions have two main limitations: 1) they cannot handle well with a wide range of grid operation conditions, system parameters, and contingencies; 2) they generally lack the ability to fast adapt to new grid operation conditions, system parameters, and contingencies, limiting their applicability for real-world applications. In this paper, we mitigate these limitations by developing a novel deep meta-reinforcement learning (DMRL) algorithm. The DMRL combines the meta strategy optimization together with DRL, and trains policies modulated by a latent space that can quickly adapt to new scenarios. We test the developed DMRL algorithm on the IEEE 300-bus system. We demonstrate fast adaptation of the meta-trained DRL polices with latent variables to new operating conditions and scenarios using the proposed method, which achieves superior performance compared to the state-of-the-art DRL and model predictive control (MPC) methods. In traditional power systems, the load consumption inside the distribution networks has a relatively passive behavior. Consequently, transmission system operators have commonly aggregated the load centers using static loads such as exponential load models. This is a practical approach for bulk power system stability studies. In modern systems, the impact of distributed generation units on the system dynamics can no longer be neglected. Static load models fall short to represent the highly dynamic behavior of active distribution networks. This paper proposes a methodology for equivalencing such networks while conserving the dynamics of interest for long-term stability studies. The methodology is based on Hammerstein-Wiener models that use only boundary variables measured at the distribution network point of common coupling. Therefore, unlike gray-box models, no previous knowledge about the system is required. Furthermore, the proposed methodology has a transparent relationship to linear systems and a convenient block representation that can be implemented in commercial power system analysis software using only standard elements. This allows for easy implementation, overcoming a barrier for a rather conservative sector such as power systems planning and operation. The increasing incorporation of renewable generating units into power systems has made it imperative to model variabilities during the resolution of generation and transmission expansion planning problems. This is commonly carried out by considering representative time periods, which are attained using clustering techniques, since the use of all historical data may involve computationally intractable problems. The chronological information concerning the input data should be maintained when representative time periods are used to model inter-temporal constraints. This is the case of long-term storage, which may be critical as regards mitigating the fluctuations related to renewable production. Recent clustering techniques have resolved this drawback at the cost of not ensuring the feasibility of the problem or underestimating extreme values of input data, which may influence investment decisions. This paper proposes a new clustering method that is based on previous techniques, maintains the chronological information regarding the input data throughout the entire time horizon and assigns more priority to the representation of extreme values. Numerical results show that the use of the proposed clustering method involves a reduction in the computational burden, since investment plans closer to the optimal solution are attained while considering less representative time periods than occurs with other methods. As synchronous generators (SGs) are extensively replaced by converter-based generators (CBGs), modern power systems are facing complicated frequency stability problems. Conventionally, the frequency nadir and the rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) are the two main factors concerned by power system operators. However, these two factors heavily rely on simulations or experiments, especially in a power system with high-penetration CBGs, which offer limited theoretical insight into how the frequency response characteristics are affected by the devices. This paper aims at filling this gap. Firstly, we derive a formulation of the global frequency for a CBG-integrated power system, referred to as common-mode frequency (CMF). The derived CMF is demonstrated to be more accurate than existing frequency definitions, e.g., the average system frequency (ASF). Then, a unified transfer function structure (UTFS) is proposed to approximate the frequency responses of different types of devices by focusing on three key parameters, which dramatically reduces the complexity of frequency analysis. On this basis, we introduce two evaluation indices, i.e., frequency drop depth coefficient (FDDC) and frequency drop slope coefficient (FDSC), to theoretically quantify the frequency nadir and the average RoCoF, respectively. Instead of relying on simulations or experiments, our method rigorously links the system's frequency characteristics to the characteristics of heterogeneous devices, which enables an in-depth understanding regarding how devices affect the system frequency. Online transient analysis plays an increasingly important role in dynamic power grids as the renewable generation continues growing. Traditional numerical methods for transient analysis not only are computationally intensive but also require precise contingency information as input, and therefore, are not suitable for online applications. Existing online transient assessment studies focus on the determination of post-contingency system stability or stability margin. This paper develops a novel graph-learning framework, Deep-learning Neural Representation or DNR, for online prediction, of the time-series trajectories of the system states using initial system responses that can be measured by phasor measurement units (PMUs). The proposed DNR framework consists of two sequential modules: a Network Constructor that captures network dependencies among generators, and a Dynamics Predictor that predicts the system trajectories. The key to improved prediction performance is the introduction of the spatio-temporal message-passing operations into graph neural networks with structural knowledge. Its effectiveness and scalability are validated through comparative studies, demonstrating the prediction performance under different contingency scenarios for systems of different sizes. This framework provides a solution to online predicting post-fault system dynamics based on real-time PMU measurements. Smart distribution grid with multiple renewable energy sources can experience random voltage fluctuations due to variable generation, which may result in voltage violations. Traditional voltage control algorithms are inadequate to handle fast voltage variations. Therefore, new dynamic control methods are being developed that can significantly benefit from the knowledge of dominant voltage influencer (DVI) nodes. DVI nodes for a particular node of interest refer to nodes that have a relatively high impact on the voltage fluctuations at that node. Conventional power flow-based algorithms to identify DVI nodes are computationally complex, which limits their use in real-time applications. This paper proposes a novel information theoretic voltage influencing score (VIS) that quantifies the voltage influencing capacity of nodes with DERs/active loads in a three phase unbalanced distribution system. VIS is then employed to rank the nodes and identify the DVI set. VIS is derived analytically in a computationally efficient manner and its efficacy to identify DVI nodes is validated using the IEEE 37-node test system. It is shown through experiments that KL divergence and Bhattacharyya distance are effective indicators of DVI nodes with an identifying accuracy of more than 90%. This paper investigates the effects of the dynamic properties of a photovoltaic generator (PVG) on the stability of a grid-connected current-source inverter (CSI)-based photovoltaic system and presents a simple yet effective active compensator to ensure system stability. A detailed equivalent model of the PVG that considers the dynamic resistance, diffusion capacitance, series inductance, and dc cable resistance and inductance is used, and the effects of these parameters are assessed. It has been found that when the PVG operates in the constant-current region (CCR), the phase margin becomes negative in the control-to-input dynamics, which alters the stability of the dc-link current control. The change in the system dynamics when the operating point of the PVG shifts from the constant-voltage region (CVR) to CCR is verified through a detailed small-signal state-space model of the complete system. Furthermore, an active compensator is proposed to ensure stable dc-link current control operation at all operating points of the PVG. The influence of different control parameters on the integrated system dynamics is examined to determine the range of the control parameters required for stable operation. The performance of the proposed system under utility-grid fault, grid voltage parameter variation, weak grid, and changes in insolation level is also evaluated. Detailed nonlinear time-domain simulation results, using a typical utility-scale CSI-based PV system, validate the analytical results and the effectiveness of the proposed active stabilization under different operating conditions. Evaluation of conservation voltage reduction (CVR) factor is critical to peak load reduction, 556 energy conservation, and many CVR-related power system control/optimization strategies. This paper proposes a novel robust CVR factor evaluation method using soft constrained gradient analysis based on time-varying load modeling and real utility field measurements. Firstly, the time-varying ZIP parameter identification is formulated as an over-determinant problem composed of first-order gradient with respect to each coefficient and soft constraints representing temporal correlation of loads in each time step, in order to improve the robustness and smoothness of CVR factor evaluation. Then, problems in time series are coordinated with a sliding window approach. A necessary condition for selecting the smallest window size is proposed and strictly proved to guarantee the existence and uniqueness of the solution of time-varying load modeling problem. Finally, time-varying CVR factors are accurately and robustly calculated with field measurements and the identified load model. Case studies are performed using sufficient field measurements obtained from two real utilities. Unlike existing methods that require a large number of measurements to obtain precise estimation of CVR factor, the proposed method is sufficiently accurate even when the measurements are limited or of low time resolution. Further, the accuracy and robustness of the proposed approach are validated under different types of uncertainties and compared with other existing data processing and CVR factor evaluation methods. Network reconfiguration (NR) has attracted much attention due to its ability to convert conventional distribution networks (DNs) into self-healing grids. This paper proposes a new strategy for real-time voltage regulation (VR) in a reconfigurable DN, whereby optimal feedforward control of distributed generators (DGs) is achieved in coordination with the operation of line switches (SWs). This enables preemptive compensation of upcoming deviations in DN voltages resulting from NR-aided load restoration. A robust optimization problem is formulated using a dynamic analytical model of NR to design the feedforward voltage controllers (FVCs) that minimize voltage deviations with respect to the H∞ norm. Errors in the estimates of DG modeling parameters and load demands are reflected in the design of optimal FVCs via polytopic uncertainty modeling. Small-signal analysis and case studies are conducted, verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the optimal FVCs in improving real-time VR when NR is activated for load restoration. The performance of the proposed FVCs is confirmed under various conditions of a self-healing DN,characterized by network islanding and size, parameter errors, SW operations, and communication time delays. The paper provides a novel framework to study the accuracy and stability of numerical integration schemes when employed for the time domain simulation of power systems. A matrix pencil-based approach is adopted to evaluate the error between the dynamic modes of the power system and the modes of the approximated discrete-time system arising from the application of the numerical method. The proposed approach can provide meaningful insights on how different methods compare to each other when applied to a power system, while being general enough to be systematically utilized for, in principle, any numerical method. The framework is illustrated for a handful of well-known explicit and implicit methods, while simulation results are presented based on the WSCC 9-bus system, as well as on a 1,479-bus dynamic model of the All-Island Irish Transmission System. High-quality generator dynamic models are critical to reliable and accurate power systems studies and planning. With the availability of PMUs, measurement-based approach for model validation has gained significant prominence. In this approach, the quality of a model is analyzed by visually comparing measured generator response with the model-based simulated response for large system disturbances. This paper proposes a new set of performance metrics to assess the model validation results to facilitate automation of the model validation process. In the proposed methodology, first, the slow governor response and comparatively faster oscillatory response are separated, and then a separate set of performance metrics is calculated for each of these two components. These proposed metrics quantify the mismatch between the actual and model-based response in a comprehensive manner without missing any information enabling automation of the process. Furthermore, in this paper, we are also proposing that the sensitivity analysis for model calibration be performed with respect to the proposed metrics for the systematic identification of key parameters. Results obtained using both simulated and real-world case-studies validate the effectiveness of the proposed performance metrics for model validation and their application to the sensitivity analysis for model calibration. This paper proposes a systematic and general approach to model correlated stochastic processes in power systems by means of stochastic differential-algebraic equations. The paper discusses the theoretical background of stochastic differential-algebraic equations and provides a variety of examples of correlated stochastic models for power system applications. With this aim, stochastic processes with Normal and Weibull distributions are considered. The case study utilizes the well-known two-area system to demonstrate that the presence of correlation between the stochastic processes can cause instability, despite the fact that the same system is stable if the same processes are uncorrelated. The case study also considers a 1479-bus dynamic model of the all-island Irish transmission system to show the scalability of the proposed technique, and to compare scenarios with different levels of correlation among stochastic processes. This paper discusses the impact of discrete secondary controllers on the dynamic response of power systems. The idea of the paper originates from the observation that there is a range of values, from few tens of seconds to few minutes, of the execution cycles of conventional automatic generation control (AGC) that leads to a limit cycle. Below and above this range the system is stable. This is certainly not a problem in practice as the AGC updates the power set points of generating units every few seconds. However, this phenomenon has interesting consequences if one considers real-time electricity markets with short dispatch periods (i.e., 5 minutes) as these markets can be modeled as a sort of AGC. The paper first provides a formal analogy between conventional AGC and real-time electricity markets. Then it shows that the discretization-driven instability exists if the system includes a real-time electricity market modeled as secondary frequency controller. Since the publication of the original paper on power system stability definitions in 2004, the dynamic behavior of power systems has gradually changed due to the increasing penetration of converter interfaced generation technologies, loads, and transmission devices. In recognition of this change, a Task Force was established in 2016 to re-examine and extend, where appropriate, the classic definitions and classifications of the basic stability terms to incorporate the effects of fast-response power electronic devices. This paper investigates the small-signal power oscillations in a VSC-based multi-terminal DC (MTDC) power transmission system. Regarding the DC power oscillation modes (DPOMs), this paper demonstrates that when the master–slave control is adopted for the MTDC power system, there is only one DPOM. In contrast, when the DC voltage droop control is adopted, the DC electric power oscillations (DEPOs) may be multi-modal oscillations as there are multiple DPOMs. Furthermore, a better understanding of DEPOs, which is analogous to low-frequency electric power oscillations (LEPOs) in conventional AC power systems, is obtained, unveiling how the DPOMs determine the power oscillations in AC and MTDC power systems. Moreover, this paper theoretically verifies that the DPOMs determine the behaviors of both DEPOs in MTDC systems and power oscillations between the VSCs (which adopt the DC voltage control or DC voltage droop control) and external AC systems. By analogy to LEPOs, damping torque analysis is applied to examine the stability risk of the MTDC power system. This paper proposes a method to design power system stabilizers (PSSs) based on single-machine infinite-bus system models to mitigate the risk of low-frequency electro- mechanical power oscillations in an N-machine power system. First, models of N fabricated identical-machine power systems are established for the N-machine power system. Analysis in the paper indicates that the electromechanical oscillation mode of fabricated identical-machine power systems with the least damping is of less damping than the electromechanical oscillation modes of N-machine power system. Second, it is proved that models of fabricated identical-machine power systems are dynamically equivalent to the single-machine infinite-bus system models. Finally, it is suggested that the PSSs are designed using single-machine infinite-bus system models to enhance the least damped electromechanical oscillation mode of fabricated identical-machine power systems. This eventually improves the damping of electromechanical oscillation modes of N-machine power system, thus mitigating the risk of low-frequency electromechanical power oscillations. In the paper, the proposed method is demonstrated and evaluated by using three well-known example multi-machine power systems. The low-frequency oscillations (LFOs) inherent in power systems will be impacted by the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs). This paper investigates the impact of virtual synchronous machine (VSM) based RESs on the LFOs in power systems. A detailed two-machine test-bed has been developed to analyze the LFOs which exists when VSMs replace synchronous generators. The characteristics of the LFO modes, and the dominant states have been comprehensively analyzed. Furthermore, this study analyzes the LFO modes which exists in an all-VSM grid. The role of the power system stabilizers in the all-VSM grid has been comprehensively evaluated. The IEEE benchmark two-area four-machine system has been employed to corroborate the results of the small-signal analysis, and observe the transient performance. In this paper, we propose a data-driven approach for uncertainty moment propagation through the non-linear power system dynamics. The proposed approach relies on the linear representation of a nonlinear system using the Perron-Frobenius & Koopman operators for propagating the moments. Data from non-linear simulations is used to approximate the linear operators by matrices, thereby enabling moment propagation by matrix multiplication. Multi-interval or dynamic economic dispatch (D-ED) is the core of various power system management functions. This optimization problem contains many constraints, a small subset of which is sufficient to enclose the D-ED feasible region. This paper presents a topology-aware learning-aided iterative constraint screening algorithm to identify a feasibility outlining subset of network and generating units ramp up/down constraints and create a truncated D-ED problem. We create a colorful image from nodal demand, thermal unit generation cost, and network topology information. Convolutional neural networks are trained for constraint status identification using colorful images corresponding to system operating conditions and transfer learning. Filtering inactive line flow and ramp up/down constraints reduces the optimization problem's size and computational burden, resulting in a reduction in solution time and memory usage. Dropping all inactive branch and ramp constraints may activate some of these originally inactive constraints upon solving the truncated D-ED. A loop is added to form a constraints coefficient matrix iteratively during training dataset preparation and algorithm utilization. This iterative loop guarantees truncated D-ED results feasibility and optimality. In this paper, an approximate aggregated impedance model (AAIM) of a grid-connected wind farm with multiple wind turbine generators (WTGs) for the small-signal stability study is derived. The derivation is conducted under the condition that the WTGs inside the wind farm are of the same type and from the same manufacturer. The AAIM derived can be seen as the impedance model (IM) of a grid-connected aggregated WTG. The IM of the aggregated WTG is the weighted average of the IMs of the individual WTGs in the wind farm and hence is simple to be built. The reactance of the line connecting the aggregated WTG to the external AC grid is the maximum eigenvalue of the network reactance matrix of the grid-connected wind farm. In addition, the derivation justifies the representation of a wind farm by an aggregated WTG in the IM-based small-signal stability analysis. Finally, two example grid-connected wind farms are used to evaluate and demonstrate the effectiveness of the AAIM proposed in the small-signal stability analysis. In this paper, we present a novel control approach for dynamic virtual power plants (DVPPs). In particular, we consider a group of heterogeneous distributed energy resources (DERs) which collectively provide desired dynamic ancillary services such as fast frequency and voltage control. Our control approach relies on an adaptive divide-and-conquer strategy: first, we disaggregate the desired frequency and voltage control specifications of the aggregate DVPP via adaptive dynamic participation matrices (ADPMs) to obtain the desired local behavior for each device. Second, we design local linear parameter-varying (LPV) $\mathcal {H}_\infty$ controllers to optimally match this local behaviors. In the process, the control design also incorporates the physical and engineered limits of each DVPP device. Furthermore, our adaptive control design can properly respond to fluctuating device capacities, and thus include weather-driven DERs into the DVPP setup. With the power system operating close to its stability margin, the increased penetration of renewable resources and loads with diverse characteristics, appropriate stability studies, and control decisions have become crucial. Due to the importance of accurate representation of aggregate loads in such studies, research interests for load modeling have increased. This paper puts forward a novel measurement-based load modeling approach that adapts itself based on the complex dynamics exhibited by the installed aggregate loads. The proposed approach primarily utilizes the collected measurements to gain insight regarding the dynamic trend in the measurements and subsequently determines the optimal order of an equivalent system or load model capable of effectively representing the aggregate load dynamics. An advanced signal pre-processing technique is employed, which effectively suppresses the noise and also preserves the transients present in the measurements. Afterward, an adaptive dynamic load model (ADLM) accurately represents the installed aggregate load. Lastly, the Refined Instrumental Variable (RIV) approach estimates the equivalent dynamic load model parameters. The results on a 2 bus and the IEEE 118 bus networks in DIgSILENT Powerfactory and a 7 bus network in Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) reveal the efficacy of the proposed approach. Voltage regulation and proper load-sharing are two main control objectives of DC microgrids which the consensus-based secondary control can be regarded as a feasible approach to achieve them. Using this approach, in addition to the stable voltage regulation, the load is shared according to the nominal potential of the distributed generation units. Nevertheless, the conventional consensus-based secondary control uses the time-triggered communication paradigm that leads to a high communication burden due to transmitting and receiving unnecessary data. In this paper, to prevent excessive data-exchanging, the mentioned approach is upgraded with a novel event-triggered scheme. The system stability analysis under the suggested event-triggered secondary controller is assessed using the Lyapunov theorem. Furthermore, the Zeno-freeness feature of the proposed solution is mathematically proved after assessing uniformly ultimately bounded stability and extracting the current per-unit and voltage derivatives dynamic as the consensus algorithm’s external inputs. The proposed approach is applied to a DC microgrid, and its performance is validated under different scenarios using Simulink/MATLAB environment. The inertia information of both synchronous generators (SGs)/equivalent SGs and converter interfaced generators (CIGs) are crucial to maintain the frequency stability of modern power grids. This paper proposes a novel data-driven method using ambient measurements, which seems to be the first method that can estimate the inertia constants of SGs/equivalent SGs and the virtual inertia constants of CIGs simultaneously without disturbing the system’s normal operating condition. Numerical studies in the IEEE 68-bus system demonstrate that the developed estimation method can estimate the inertia constants of different generation units accurately and is robust to measurement noises, missing measurements and the variation of operating conditions. This paper investigates the dynamic voltage support (DVS) from inverter-based resources (IBRs) under voltage sags to enhance the low-voltage ride-through performance. The DVS problem is formulated as a nonconvex optimization program that maximizes the positive-sequence voltage magnitude at the point of common coupling (PCC) subject to the current, active power, and synchronization stability constraints. Then, we perform the optimality analysis to explore the global optimum analytically. It is found that the unique global optimum has three scenarios/stages (S1–S3), which depends on the specific relationship among grid voltage, grid strength, and physical limits of IBRs. The explicit closed-form solutions in S1 and S3 are derived, and the optimality conditions (an implicit solution) of S2 are provided, which guarantees the global optimality and enables the compatibility with fast real-time control. Finally, we implement the optimum with a grid-connected single-stage photovoltaic (PV) power plant by integrating a DVS controller. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for the data-driven characterization of power system dynamics. The developed method of Extended Subspace Identification (ESI) is suitable for systems with output measurements when all the dynamics states are not observable. It is particularly applicable for power systems dynamic identification using Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) measurements. As in the case of power systems, it is often expensive or impossible to measure all the internal dynamic states of system components such as generators, controllers and loads. PMU measurements capture voltages, currents, power injection and frequencies, which can be considered as the outputs of system dynamics. The ESI method is suitable for system identification, capturing nonlinear modes, computing participation factor of output measurements in system modes and identifying system parameters such as system inertia. The proposed method is suitable for measurements with a noise similar to realistic system measurements. The developed method addresses some of the known deficiencies of existing data-driven dynamic system characterization methods. This paper proposes an impedance/admittance-based methodology for stability assessment of converter-based device connections to power systems. The proposed methodology is designed to model the dynamics of detailed black-box converter models, derived from impedance frequency response measurements. From the converter’s impedance frequency response measurements, a linear time-invariant (LTI) representation of its dynamics is obtained in the $dq$ domain using a vector fitting technique. This representation is incorporated in the state-space representation of the whole power system in the $dq$ domain, which is used to perform stability assessment considering traditional eigenvalue analysis and participation factors computation. The proposed methodology is tested in the 39 Bus New England system, including detailed models of a VSC windfarm and a modular multilevel converter (MMC) technology-based STATCOM. It has been found that the proposed impedance-based methodology is able to accurately predict the dynamic performance of black-box converter models, unstable operating conditions and converter control interactions between devices. This paper presents a new control strategy for enhancing the dc voltage regulation and the transient response in the multi-terminal VSC-HVDC system by ensuring swift power-sharing among converters when encountering large disturbance such as converter loss or ac fault at one of the converter stations. The quick power sharing can be realized using direct power control (DPC) since it has a merit of fast power dynamic response. On the other hand, to limit the converter current during ac fault, a new coordination strategy between DPC and vector current control (VCC) is proposed. Furthermore, a new simplified model of the MTDC system is developed to study the performance of DPC in enhancing the dc voltage dynamics response analytically. The time-domain simulation of the detailed model of the four converter stations MTDC system verify that the proposed control strategy significantly reduces the overshoot in the transient dc voltage response following an outage or ac fault. As a result, together with the droop gain selection for the maximum permissible steady-state dc voltage deviation, the proposed control strategy can help to reduce the size of the dc chopper in the MTDC grid or even avoiding it. Moreover, the comparative analysis based on time-domain simulation depicts that the proposed simplified model has the same dc voltage response compared to the detailed model of the MTDC system except for a steady-state error of 0.47% and a little bit longer settling time (1.5 ms) at transient. Regarding the continuing increase of anthropogenic carbon emissions in the power system with growing energy consumption, researchers have focused on managing the demand side to achieve low-carbon transition. However, such a low-carbon transition cannot be achieved effectively without the proper incentive scheme. Moreover, it is desired to improve the computation quality of carbon tracing tools and extend their applications by state-of-art techniques. To fulfil these existing research gaps, this paper proposes a low-carbon optimal scheduling model with demand response (DR) based carbon intensity control. It aims to reduce the dependence of customers on energy sources with high carbon intensities while decreasing reasonable energy consumption. Likewise, a data-driven approach conducted with the Bayesian interfere regression is proposed to carry out the carbon emission flow (CEF) model to cope with the drawbacks of the conventional emission calculation. Moreover, the storage emission and relevant dynamic impacts to the system are fully considered. The proposed data-driven approach is tested on a series of IEEE systems with different sizes, its high accuracy and efficiency are proved by the simulation results. Zonal pricing is a well-suited mechanism to incentivize grid-supporting behavior of profit-maximizing producers and consumers operating on a large-scale power system. In zonal electricity markets, local system operators create individual price zones, which provide appropriate price signals depending on local grid conditions such as an excess or shortage of electrical energy in certain regions. In this paper, a real-time zonal pricing controller for AC power networks is presented that ensures frequency and voltage stability as well as Pareto efficiency of the resulting closed-loop equilibria. Based on a dynamic network model that takes line losses and power exchange with adjacent price zones into account, distributed continuous-time control laws are derived which require only neighbor-to-neighbor communication. Application to a real-time congestion management strategy illustrates how spatially and temporally differentiated prices enable grid-supportive operation of the participants without interventions by a superordinate control authority. A new method for the stability assessment of inverter-based microgrids is presented in this paper. Directly determining stability boundaries by searching the multidimensional space of inverters’ droop gains is a computationally prohibitive task. Instead, we build a certified stability region by utilizing a generalized Laplacian matrix eigenvalues, which are a measure of proximity to stability boundary. We establish an upper threshold for the eigenvalues that determines the stability boundary of the entire system and demonstrate that this value depends only on the network’s R/X ratio but does not depend on the grid topology. We also provide a conservative upper threshold of the eigenvalues that are universal for any systems within a reasonable range of R/X ratios. We then construct approximate certified stability regions representing convex sets in the multidimensional space of droop gains that could be utilized for gains optimization. We show how the certified stability region can be maximized by properly choosing droop gains, and we provide closed-form analytic expressions for the certified stability regions. The computational complexity of our method is almost independent of the number of inverters. The proposed methodology has been tested using IEEE 123 node test system with 10 inverters. In view of the increasing levels of renewable generation across the world, the operational dynamics of power systems are changing. One of the dimensions of this transformational change is the nature of fault ride through behavior of renewable technologies such as wind and the associated differences compared to conventional generation. This paper investigates the impacts of fault ride through behavior of wind farms on the system stability in detail, using full dynamic model of a low inertia island power system. Recorded PMU measurements are used to establish the variations in wind farm behavior during and after a fault. A detailed sensitivity analysis on the active and reactive power injection behavior of wind farms is carried out to establish the component of fault ride through behavior that is most critical to system stability, using the full model of the Ireland and Northern Ireland Power system (All island power system). Detailed investigation of the mechanics of a fault in a low inertia, wind generation dominated system is carried out to reveal potential technical scarcities. Finally, mitigations for identified scarcities arising from non-ideal fault ride through behavior of wind farms are presented in terms of Transmission System Operator led novel system services. This paper presents a methodology for the design of over-frequency containment schemes in low inertia, high renewable systems. This methodology is demonstrated through the comprehensive redesign of the containment scheme for significant over-frequency events (e.g., the loss of an exporting HVDC interconnector) in the Ireland and Northern Ireland power system (All-Island System). The new scheme allows an existing synchronous generator runback system integrity protection scheme to be replaced with fixed wind tripping and dynamic response from wind. This exploits the capabilities of renewable generation to create effective protection and control resources. The methodology provides the steps required to determine the key parameters of the scheme (e.g., maximum allowable frequency, required volume of tripping, lowest trip frequency). A key consideration of the methodology is the volume of dynamic response from wind that can be deployed before frequency limits are violated (e.g., inertia and wind penetration). Dynamic simulations are performed in DSE Tools for the All-Island system considering a 2020 operational scenario. The fast development of renewable energies leads to an increase in the power electronics penetration in transmission systems. This is particularly true if one considers a 100% renewable energies power system, where wind and solar photovoltaic energies, which make most of the renewable energies connections today, are connected to the grid through power electronics converters. Because power electronics-based generators and synchronous machines-based generators have very different dynamic behaviours, some approximations usually used to run transient simulations of transmission systems might not be optimal for future grids. The systematic use of the phasor approximation applied to the power lines, implemented in most of the Transient Simulation Programs, is indeed not relevant any more. To avoid the use of Electromagnetic Transient simulations, that are resource-demanding and time-consuming, this paper presents a novel Model Order Reduction technique for large grids with a high penetration of power electronic devices. A rapid deployment of renewable generation has led to significant reduction in the rotational system inertia and damping, thus making frequency control in power systems more challenging. This paper proposes a novel control scheme based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) for converter-interfaced generators operating in a grid-forming mode, with the goal of exploiting their fast response capabilities to provide fast frequency control service to the system. The controller manipulates converter power injections to limit the frequency nadir and rate-of-change-of-frequency after a disturbance. Both centralized and decentralized MPC approaches are considered and compared in terms of performance and practical implementation. Special attention is given to the decentralized controller by generating an explicit MPC solution to enhance computational efficiency and reduce hardware requirements. In this paper, a distributed predefined-time fractional-order sliding mode controller (DPTFOSMC) is proposed for performance improvement of power system. The proposed DPTFOSMC is designed based on the multi-agent framework and distributed control theory, which can reduce the pressure of central controller in communication and calculation, thus obtaining fast and coordinated response. The DPTFOSMC can achieve the advantages of sliding mode control (SMC) with fast response and strong robustness for the power system. In addition, the power system under the proposed DPTFOSMC can be stabilized in stable range within a predefined time which is directly equal to the tunable parameter, thus meeting the high requirement for convergence time of the power system. The prescribed performance function (PPF) is carried out to design the DPTFOSMC, which can ensure that the power system can achieve the expected transient and steady responses. Meanwhile, fractional calculus is implemented to devise the DPTFOSMC to eliminate the chattering phenomenon of conventional SMC. The Lyapunov function is adopted to analysis the predefined-time stability of the power system under the proposed DPTFOSMC. Simulations are taken to validate the effectiveness and superior performance of the proposed DPTFOSMC for the power system. With theincreased penetration of renewable sources, power gridsare becoming stressed due to fluctuating generation. To alleviate stress from inconsistent sources, utilities employ energy storage systems alongside renewable sources and rely on dispatching synchronous generators. However, optimal dispatch of such devices is limited by traditional AC optimal power flow methods that do not account for time-dependent constraints, such as the state of charge of energy storage systems and generator ramping constraints. Multi-period optimal power flow is proposed as a large non-convex non-linear problem to optimally dispatch and control generators and energy storage elements across multiple time periods. In this paper, we introduce a scalable, robust framework to solve multi-period optimal power flow using a differential dynamic programming scheme that makes it capable of scaling to large systems containing energy storage devices. We demonstrate the efficacy of this solution by optimizing the SyntheticUSA testcase over a set of time periods. Construction of the linearized state-space model is the key step of eigenvalue analysis for SSO study of power systems with large-scale renewable power generation (RPG) integrated. This paper proposes a novel method to construct the state matrix of the AC/DC hybrid power system with RPG within the discrete-time domain. The continuous-time state-space model of each AC/DC component as well as RPG units in the power system, is discretized together with their corresponding control. The discretized equation of each component is then represented by an equivalent circuit consisting of parallel historical current and conductance. According to the power system configuration, the discrete-time equivalent circuit of the whole AC/DC hybrid system is established, and the nodal analysis method is applied for the construction of the discrete-time state-space model of the power system. In this way, the state matrix can be acquired much more conveniently than that of continuous-time state-space method, which needs topology analysis to find independent state variables of the network from the proper tree. The proposed method has been applied in the eigenvalue analysis for the SSO study of a case system adapted from the AC/DC hybrid transmission system in northwest China. As the crucial interface of renewable energy integration, the grid-tied inverter is a complicated system with a multi-timescale feature, containing both fast dynamics and slow dynamics that determine the system stability. However, previous researches on stability analysis mainly focus on the slow dynamics without considering the impact of fast dynamics, which may bring to inaccurate stability prediction. In this paper, the impact of fast dynamics on stability is investigated for grid-tied inverter from a physical perspective. Considering the dynamics of the current control loop and network, a two degrees-of-freedom oscillator model is firstly established to extract the fast dynamics separately. The damping torque analysis is then applied to analyze the impact of the extracted fast dynamics on the damping and spring coefficients of slow dynamics. Moreover, based on the fast dynamic analysis, a novel reduced-order model is proposed with the consideration of the dominant characteristics of fast dynamics, which improves the model accuracy without increasing the complexity. This paper proposes a novel unified prediction approach for both small-signal and transient rotor angle stability as opposed to other studies that have only addressed transient rotor angle stability. Deep learning techniques are employed in this paper to train an online prediction model for rotor angle stability (RAS) using the voltage phasor measurements which are collected across the entire system. As a result, the trained model provides a fast yet accurate prediction of the transient stability status when a power system is subjected to a disturbance. Also, if the system is transiently stable, the prediction model updates the power system operator concerning the damping of low-frequency local and inter-area modes of oscillations. Therefore, the presented approach provides information concerning the transient stability and oscillatory dynamic response of the system such that proper control actions are taken. To achieve these objectives, advanced deep learning techniques are employed to train the online prediction model using a dataset which is generated through extensive time domain simulations for wide range of operating conditions. A convolutional neural network (CNN) transient stability classifier is trained to operate on the transient response of the phasor voltages across the entire system and provide a binary stability label. In tandem, a long-short term memory (LSTM) network is trained to learn the oscillatory response of a predicted stable system to capture the step-by-step dynamic evolution of the critical poorly damped low-frequency oscillations. The superior performance of the proposed model is tested using the New-England 10-machine, 39-bus, IEEE 16-machine, 68-bus, 5-area and IEEE 50-machine, 145-bus test systems and is verified with time domain simulation.
