The work reported in this paper aims at developing an algorithm for system operators to solve a robust security-constrained AC optimal power flow (R-SC-ACOPF) problem, which also optimizes the settings of discrete controllers including load tap changers (LTCs) and shunt capacitor banks (SCBs). An iterative algorithm involving a master problem and a number of sub-problems is proposed. The master problem selects the optimal discrete controllers’ settings by taking into account primal SC-ACOPF constraints based on the single-component worst contingencies identified by the sub-problems. Each sub-problem is a bi-level max-min problem used to find the current worst contingency. The overall objective is to minimize the total cost, including generation and load shedding cost, while satisfying all relevant constraints. The master problem and sub-problems allow representing LTC tap positions, SCB status, and contingencies using binary variables. Two case studies are presented as applications of this novel technique. This paper proposes an optimization approach for day-ahead reactive power planning to improve voltage security in transmission networks. The problem is formulated as a voltage-secure multi-period optimal reactive power dispatch (MP-ORPD) problem. The optimization approach searches for optimal set-points of dynamic and static reactive power (var) resources. Specifically, the output includes set-points for switching shunts, transformer taps, and voltage magnitudes at the regulated buses. The primary goal is to maximize the dynamic reactive power reserve of the system, by minimizing the reactive power supplied by synchronous generators. As the size of the MP-ORPD problem increases significantly with increasing number of contingencies and time periods, efficiency is crucial for practical applications. In this paper, a decomposition technique based on consensus and alternating optimization, where integer variable targets are obtained via MILP, is used to partition the MP-ORPD problem into a set of subproblems, which can be solved in parallel to reduce the computation time. The proposed MP-ORPD problem and its solution algorithm are integrated into the EPRI-VCA software. The results of various power networks of large electric utilities in the Eastern interconnection demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in providing preventive control schedules. The paper introduces the concept of complex frequency. The imaginary part of the complex frequency is the variation with respect of a synchronous reference of the local bus frequency as commonly defined in power system studies. The real part is defined based on the variation of the voltage magnitude. The latter term is crucial for the correct interpretation and analysis of the variation of the frequency at each bus of the network. The paper also develops a set of differential equations that describe the link between complex powers and complex frequencies at network buses in transient conditions. No simplifications are assumed except for the usual approximations of the models utilized for the transient stability analysis of power systems. This paper establishes an instantaneous voltage model to illustrate the dynamic characteristics of grid voltage in electromagnetic time scale affected by power-electronic interfaced voltage regulatory devices with two typical categories of control systems, i.e., power-current cascading control and power synchronization control, exemplified by the STATCOM and virtual synchronous condenser (VSCON) respectively. In this paper, a linearized instantaneous voltage model is firstly established to analyze the impact paths of control loops in the STATCOM and VSCON. Based on the model, the dynamic process of grid voltage is divided into three stages. Various factors on the dynamic process of grid voltage are analyzed, especially cascading control loops prior to the functioning of AC voltage control. Moreover, stiffness characteristic is proposed to evaluate the effects of power electronic interfaced voltage regulatory devices with different control structures. With the growing penetration of distributed renewable energy, distributed control approaches are widely utilized in voltage control of active distribution networks (ADNs), suffering from limited applicability for control devices or heavy communication burden. This paper develops an innovative distributed voltage control strategy of ADNs with global sensitivities (DVC-GS), which integrates network information from a global optimization view to coordinate energy storages, PV inverters and the OLTC with little communication and computing time. The global sensitivities of voltage violations across all buses with respect to nodal voltage and active/reactive power injection are formulated to quantify the ability of each controllable resource for alleviating voltage violations in the entire ADN. The back-and-forth communication combined with the modified DistFlow model is newly developed for the real-time update of global sensitivities at each bus with high accuracy and no iteration. Then the coordinated control of various devices is implemented on basis of global sensitivities to effectively ensure voltage security of ADNs. This paper proposes an online voltage control strategy of distributed energy resources (DERs), based on the projected Newton method (PNM), for unbalanced distribution networks. The optimal Volt/VAr control (VVC) problem is formulated as an optimization program, with the goal of maintaining the voltage profile across the network by coordinating the VAr outputs of DERs. To overcome the slow convergence rate of conventional gradient-based methods, a PNM-based solution algorithm is developed to solve this VVC problem. It utilizes a non-diagonal symmetric positive definite matrix, developed from the Hessian matrix of the objective, to scale the gradient, and thus a fast convergence performance can be expected in this Newton-like algorithm. Moreover, taking advantage of the instantaneous feedback of voltage measurements, the online implementation of the PNM-based VVC is further designed to deal with fast system variations. In this online PNM-based VVC scheme, each bus agent communicates the instantaneous voltage measurements to the central agent, and the central agent communicates the VAr output commands of DERs back to each bus agent. The fast convergence performance of PNM results in a stronger capability to track the system variations in real time. The wide variety of inverter control settings for solar photovoltaics (PV) causes the accurate knowledge of these settings to be difficult to obtain in practice. This paper addresses the problem of determining inverter reactive power control settings from net load advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) data. The estimation is first cast as fitting parameterized control curves. We argue for an intuitive and practical approach to preprocess the AMI data, which exposes the setting to be extracted. We then develop a more general approach with a data-driven reactive power disaggregation algorithm, reframing the problem as a maximum likelihood estimation for the native load reactive power. These methods form the first approach for reconstructing reactive power control settings of solar PV inverters from net load data. The constrained curve fitting algorithm is tested on 701 loads with behind-the-meter (BTM) PV systems with identical control settings. The settings are accurately reconstructed with mean absolute percentage errors between 0.425% and 2.870%. The disaggregation-based approach is then tested on 451 loads with variable BTM PV control settings. The commutation failure (CF) is the most common fault in line-commutated high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) systems that may lead to the transient overvoltage in the sending-side system. In the worst condition, the CF may lead to large-scale wind turbine tripping. To resolve this problem, the mathematical relationship between the reactive power consumed by the rectifier and DC voltage, DC current is derived. Then, a transient overvoltage calculation method is proposed in this paper. Furthermore, the mechanism of transient overvoltage caused by the CF is analyzed; it is revealed that the reason for three times transient overvoltage is the rapid decrease of the reactive power consumed by the rectifier during the CF and the recovery period from the CF. This paper proposes a constant reactive power control (CRPC) to inhibit transient overvoltage of the sending-side AC system. The proposed CRPC can increase the reactive power consumed by the rectifier, reduce the exchange reactive power between AC and DC systems, and suppress the transient overvoltage. A simulation model in PSCAD serves to verify the proposed CRPC on the transient overvoltage suppression in the situation of different fault types, fault duration, fault severity and short circuit ratio (SCR). The modern photovoltaic inverter has an active power-reactive power (Watt-VAr) control curve that is part of its management modes. The Watt-VAr curve, whose settings can be remotely modified, regulates the inverter reactive power output in function of its active power. This paper proposes the optimization of inverter segregated linear decision rules (LDRs), starting from the legacy Volt-VAr optimization in distribution networks. As opposed to classical LDRs that are interfaced with Volt-VAr optimization, the segregated LDRs are piecewise linear continuous curves that directly satisfy the reactive power capability of inverters, and their multiple segments can capture the correlation in solar power variability. The paper presents linear programming formulations for optimizing the segregated linear decision rules using stochastic optimization, robust optimization, and distributionally robust optimization. In this paper, we present a novel control approach for dynamic virtual power plants (DVPPs). In particular, we consider a group of heterogeneous distributed energy resources (DERs) which collectively provide desired dynamic ancillary services such as fast frequency and voltage control. Our control approach relies on an adaptive divide-and-conquer strategy: first, we disaggregate the desired frequency and voltage control specifications of the aggregate DVPP via adaptive dynamic participation matrices (ADPMs) to obtain the desired local behavior for each device. Second, we design local linear parameter-varying (LPV) $\mathcal {H}_\infty$ controllers to optimally match this local behaviors. In the process, the control design also incorporates the physical and engineered limits of each DVPP device. Furthermore, our adaptive control design can properly respond to fluctuating device capacities, and thus include weather-driven DERs into the DVPP setup. Optimal Volt/VAR control (VVC) in distribution networks relies on an effective coordination between the conventional utility-owned mechanical devices and the smart residential photovoltaic (PV) inverters. Typically, a central controller carries out a periodic optimization and sends setpoints to the local controller of each device. However, instead of tracking centrally dispatched setpoints, smart PV inverters can cooperate on a much faster timescale to reach optimality within a PV inverter group. To accommodate such PV inverter groups in the VVC architecture, this paper proposes a bi-level optimization framework. The upper-level determines the setpoints of the mechanical devices to minimize the network active power losses, while the lower-level represents the coordinated actions that the inverters take for their own objectives. The interactions between these two levels are captured in the bi-level optimization, which is solved using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. This framework fully exploits the capabilities of the different types of voltage regulation devices and enables them to cooperatively optimize their goals. The paper establishes convergence properties of decentralized and distributed control strategies that use a Steinmetz-based technique for mitigating voltage unbalance on distribution feeders. Reactive power from distributed energy resources (DERs), such as solar photovoltaic (PV), is used to balance voltages at critical nodes in the distribution network. Interactions between controllers are analyzed and a theoretical guarantee is derived for stability of the control algorithms. This is achieved using Banach fixed-point theory. Providing such convergence results ensures robustness of the proposed control algorithms in realistic settings where parameters are uncertain and/or slowly varying, disturbances are prevalent, and control and measurement signals are prone to delays. Microgrid's voltage regulation is of particular importance during both grid-connected and islanded modes of operation. Especially, during the islanded mode, when the support from the upstream grid is lost, stable voltage regulation is vital for the reliable operation of critical loads. This paper proposes a robust and data-driven control approach for secondary voltage control of AC microgrids in the presence of uncertainties. To this end, unfalsified adaptive control (UAC) is utilized to select the best stabilizing controller from a set of pre-designed controllers with the minimum knowledge required from the microgrid. This paper presents a novel hierarchical cooperative control strategy to solve the problems of unbalanced State of Charge (SoC), unreasonable load current sharing, and unstable bus voltage for battery storage system (BSS) in islanded DC microgrid. In the communication layer, a neighbor-to-neighbor communication network architecture is constructed in which each battery storage unit (BSU) only communicates information with neighboring nodes, and a multi-agent consensus algorithm is used to iteratively estimate the relevant average global variables. In the main control layer, the droop coefficient is dynamically adjusted by constructing a fast SoC convergence function to ensure that the load current is reasonably distributed based on the rated capacity of each BSU. In the secondary control layer, a virtual voltage drop equalization controller and an average bus voltage compensation controller are designed to eliminate the impact of line impedance mismatch and compensate the average bus voltage. Furthermore, an optimized factor is designed to accelerate the later stage of SoC convergence. Finally, a DC microgrid experimental platform based on StarSim HIL is built, and the results demonstrate that the proposed strategy can achieve the control objectives of fast SoC balance, proportional load current sharing, and bus voltage stability. Linear droop control is a standard approach for the decentralized operation of AC microgrids. While the traditional design of the real and reactive power droop functions does not consider economic aspects, recent approaches present modifications to enable least-cost operation. This paper proposes mixed-integer conic programming (MICP) for computing the real and reactive power droop parameters from a stochastic optimization framework that captures several snapshots of the microgrid’s operation. The model permits distributed generation to switch between grid-forming and grid-feeding modes. Unlike previous works, MICP provides droop parameters that are globally optimal for the design scenarios. Numerical results show that using traditional linear cost-based droop design methods may result in voltage magnitude violations. Power systems are undergoing fundamental changes with increasing penetration of renewable energies. A reactive power ancillary service market is of significance to incentivize private providers, such as thermal power units and renewable power plants (RPPs), to participate in maintaining voltage security. Because of the local nature of reactive power, one of the recognized issues is that monopolistic participants may have great market power and strategically manipulate their costs. To pursue economic efficiency, this paper proposes an incentive-compatible mechanism based on Vickery-Clarke-Groves (VCG) auctions for the day-ahead reactive power ancillary service market. The obligations of reactive power ancillary service are quantified in the VCG-based market mechanism. Depending on the expected performance of participants compared with the corresponding obligations, payments are obtained for thermal power units, RPPs, and loads. Hence, providers have the incentive to declare their true costs and undertake obligations. Furthermore, a scarcity price is employed to reward the provision of scarce reactive power resources and ensure reliable market clearing. The proposed mechanism is illustrated using the IEEE 24-bus and 118-bus systems. The results verify the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism. Bipolar VSC-MTDC is a promising solution to increase power transmission capacity and system reliability for large-scale renewable energy integration. However, traditional interpolar active power control methods cannot comprehensively explore the maximum transmission capability of the bipolar VSC-MTDC under abnormal operating conditions. Considering the flexibility of the bipolar VSC-MTDC that the positive-pole and negative-pole DC networks can be operated independently, a novel fault self-recovering control strategy is proposed in this paper to provide automatic, global and timely recovery solutions under various fault conditions: (a) Firstly, a coordinated time-driven and event-driven security monitoring, optimization and recovering control framework is proposed to guarantee the accuracy and speed of the corresponding calculation and control, hence to meet the timeliness requirement of fault self-recovery; (b) Secondly, a global optimal power allocation calculation method is proposed to automatically calculate the optimal power allocation between the positive-pole and negative-pole DC networks; (c) Thirdly, an interpolar active power dispatch method is proposed to realize the fault self-recovering control strategy based on primary control strategies of bipolar VSC-MTDC. Simulation results using MATLAB and PSCAD/EMTDC show that the proposed control strategy can timely and effectively enhance the overall power transmission capability for large-scale renewable energy integration after the fault. Since the wide application of virtual synchronous generators (VSGs), the power grid faces great challenges in the safe and stable operation due to their limited thermal capacity and weak anti-disturbance ability. During transient period, for example, a fault occurs in the transmission line, the VSG may lose the transient angle stability and provoke the current hard limit. Even if the fault is cleared by tripping of line, it still faces the problem of instability and voltage dips. To address this problem, in this paper, the post-fault large-signal model of VSG is derived first via the travelling waves based fault information acquisition. Subsequently, with the effect of both active and reactive power loops taken into account, a two-stage simultaneous control scheme is proposed for improving the transient stability of VSG, while considering the current limitation during fault state and voltage support after fault clearance. This method is fulfilled by mode switching and an additional feedback control based on the fault signal. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method under both symmetrical and asymmetrical faults is verified. Volt/VAr Optimization (VVO) is becoming increasingly crucial in distribution management systems with renewable sources that require setting their reactive power in coordination with legacy voltage and reactive power control devices. This paper presents a VVO method that operates in complex variables based on the Wirtinger calculus; it employs a penalty method that keeps voltage magnitudes and controller parameters within limits together with a probabilistic rounding technique for handling switched device variables. The complex variable implementation permits using the compensation technique when solving the Karush-Kuhn Tucker (KKT) system, thus achieving a significant speedup due to limiting the number of linear system factorizations. The proposed method is contrasted with a classical VVO implementation employing discrete coordinate search from the current operating point and an enhanced version that uses sensitivity information. Numerical results on distribution networks having up to 3147 nodes show that the proposed method is significantly faster than classical methods and gives operating points free of voltage magnitude violations and lower power loss. High penetrations of photovoltaic (PV) systems can cause severe voltage quality problems in distribution networks. This paper proposes a distributed control strategy based on the dynamic formation of coalitions to coordinate a large number of PV inverters for voltage regulation. In this strategy, a rule-based coalition formation scheme deals with the zonal voltage difference caused by the uneven integration of PV capacity. Under this scheme, PV inverters form into separate voltage regulation coalitions autonomously according to local, neighbor as well as coalition voltage magnitude and regulation capacity information. To coordinate control within each coalition, we develop a feedback-based leader-follower consensus algorithm which eliminates the voltage violations caused by the fast fluctuations of load and PV generation. This algorithm allocates the required reactive power contribution among the PV inverters according to their maximum available capacity to promote an effective and fair use of the overall voltage regulation capacity. Case studies based on realistic distribution networks and field-recorded data validate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. Moreover, comparison with a centralized network decomposition-based scheme shows the flexibility of coalition formation in organizing the distributed PV inverters. The evolution of power distribution grids from passive to active systems creates reliability and efficiency challenges to the distribution system operators. In this paper, an energy management and control scheme for managing the operation of an active distribution grid with prosumers is proposed. A multi-objective optimization model to minimize (i) the prosumers electricity cost and (ii) the cost of the grid energy losses, while guaranteeing safe and reliable grid operation is formulated. This is done by determining the active and reactive power set-points of the photovoltaic and storage systems integrated in the grid buildings. The resulting optimization model is non-convex, thus a convex second-order cone program is developed by appropriately relaxing the non-convex constraints which yields optimal results in most operating conditions. The convexified model is further utilized to develop an algorithm that yields feasible solutions to the non-convex problem under any operating conditions. Moreover, a second novel algorithm to find the operating point that provides fairness between the prosumers and the grid costs is proposed. This paper proposes a finite-time event-triggered secondary frequency and voltage control for islanded AC microgrids (MGs) in a distributed fashion. The proposed control strategy can effectively perform frequency restoration and voltage regulations, while sharing the active and reactive power among the distributed generators (DGs) based on their power ratings. The finite-time control enables a system to reach consensus in a finite period of time enhanced from the asymptotic convergence. The event-triggered communication is utilized to reduce the communication burden among the DG controllers by transmitting data among DGs if an event-triggering condition is satisfied. The performance of the proposed finite-time event-triggered frequency control is verified utilizing a hardware-in-the-loop experimental testbed which simulates an AC MG in Opal-RT. As the inverter-based generation replaces the conventional synchronous generators, it may also need to fill in the missing ancillary service support. One of these ancillary services is dynamic reactive power provision and voltage control. This paper analyzes optimal strategy of reactive and active fault-current support of the inverter-based generation leading to fast voltage recovery of the system. For the purpose of the analysis, new ramping active current controller able to emulate different behavior of active current injection is proposed. By optimizing its parameters for different case studies of the system, the conclusions about optimal behavior of the inverter based generation with respect to system parameters and operating conditions are drawn. It is observed that the optimal combination of active and reactive fault-current is the most sensitive to the dynamic load component penetration levels in the system. With the increasing penetration levels, the significance of active fault-current injection increases. The results show that with higher penetration levels of dynamic load component in the heavy load areas, the ramping down of the inverter-based generation active fault-current results in slower voltage recovery of the system. Variability in power generation at multiple consumer-owned renewable energy sources can cause random voltage fluctuations, which may result in voltage violations at multiple nodes in a power distribution system. Traditional methods of voltage control are ineffective to address fast voltage variations. New dynamic methods of voltage control using end-user devices can significantly benefit from the knowledge of the dominant influencer of voltage fluctuation (DIVF). This paper introduces information theoretic metrics to identify DIVF for every node in the power distribution system. A node can be DIVF due to its location in the distribution system and its capacity to generate and change its power. Use of traditional power flow algorithms to identify the DIVF is computationally complex, which limits their use in real-time applications. In this paper, information theoretic indicators of the DIVF are computed analytically in a computationally efficient manner, and their effectiveness to identify the DIVF is tested using the IEEE 69 node test system. From simulations, it is shown that differential entropy, Kullback–Leibler distance, and Frechet distance are effective indicators of the DIVF and can successfully identify the most influential nodes providing the foundation for intelligent voltage control. This paper presents a two-timescale multi-objective coordinated volt/var optimization system for active distribution networks with renewable energy resources (RESs). In the hourly timescale, power loss and the number of control actions of on-load tap changers and (switchable) shunt capacitors for 24 h are minimized by coordinating on-load tap changers, (switchable) shunt capacitors, and reactive power outputs of RESs. A three-step method consisting of global search, user preference, and local search is adopted to solve the corresponding multi-objective mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problem. A rolling volt/var optimization is executed every 6 h, considering the day-ahead RES forecast errors. In the 15-min timescale, the RES reactive powers are optimized with RES uncertainties explicitly taken into consideration to minimize the pilot-bus voltage deviation under all representative scenarios. The pilot buses are those buses whose voltage magnitudes capture the network voltage profile. In this paper, a linear method is applied to quickly identify a set of pilot buses, and the impact of the identified pilot bus on the entire network voltage profile is evaluated. The distributed Volt/Var control solution is a promising one for active distribution networks (ADNs), but a critical issue is how to improve the distributed algorithm's convergence with less communication burden. In this paper, we propose a bi-level consensus alternation direction multiplier method-based fully distributed Volt/Var optimization algorithm (B-FADMM) for ADNs by exploiting inverter-based rapid control devices. In the first level, the Volt/Var optimal solution of subpartitions is obtained in parallel, and the second level completes the variable increment of each partition to correct the search direction of the first level. In the algorithm, firstly, an adaptive matrix $\omega $ initialization strategy is proposed to adapt to the different magnitude of variables, which avoids non-convergence or slow convergence of the algorithm. Secondly, the null-space method is used in the second level of the algorithm to obtain the null-space basis matrix on the active constraint of the subpartition, which reduces the dimensions of the problem and the computational complexity. In addition, the conjugate gradient (CG) algorithm is used to update the dual multiplier of each partition only by exchanging coupling information among partitions, which protects information privacy. Experiments showed the proposed approach attains the same result as the centralized, the computational performance of the proposed method is far superior to some popular other distributed methods in terms of accuracy, computational efficiency, and scalability. The complex voltage variation is an emerging issue caused by the large-scale distributed energy resources (DERs) integration and the forming prosumers. The prosumers with uncertain photovoltaic (PV) generation will serve as autonomous entities for distributed voltage regulation, which have interaction during the voltage regulation process and have not been fully researched. This paper proposed a stochastic game approach for distributed voltage regulation based on autonomous PV prosumers, where the interactive prosumers’ PV uncertainties are formulated as a dynamic process during the voltage regulation. An economic incentive-based voltage regulation model is built for autonomous prosumers, which takes the reactive power as strategies and considers the PV curtailment, reactive power compensations, and PV uncertainties. The Markov decision process is adopted, and the approach of changing discrete PV uncertainties to continuous probability distribution is proposed to solve the stochastic game model, while dealing with the “curse of dimensionality” issue arising from the PV uncertainties. Finally, the case study is conducted on the IEEE 33 and 118 node system with real data, and the simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed voltage regulation method in terms of the nodal voltage, prosumers’ utility, PV uncertainties management, and scalability. This paper proposes a distributed coordinated voltage control scheme for distribution networks with distributed generation (DG) and on-load tap changer (OLTC). In this scheme, static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs), DG units and OLTC are coordinated to regulate voltages of all buses to be close to the nominal value in the distribution network, mitigate voltage fluctuations, and minimize the number of operations of OLTC while considering different temporal characteristics of voltage regulation devices. The optimization problem of coordinating DG units and STATCOMs is decomposed by the gradient projection (GP) method. The local controller optimizes the reactive power outputs of DGs and STATCOMs according to local voltage and reactive power measurements, and still achieves the optimal coordination of DG units and STATCOMS in a decentralized manner without a central controller or communication between local controllers. The OLTC control scheme is designed to correct the long-term voltage deviations based on model predictive control (MPC) while minimizing the number of operations. The local controllers send the calculated reactive power references of DG and STATCOMs to the OLTC controller, which achieves distributed coordinated voltage control and mitigates the computation burden. This paper proposes a multifunctional control strategy and associated control algorithms for distributed wind-turbine (WT) based nano-grids connected to a distorted utility-grid. The contribution is on a new strategy with innovative control algorithms to coordinate multiple converters for a multitasking operation of the nano-grids. The novelty is on a unique control design with feasibilities: maximizing the generated power from WT, maintaining power quality in both ac- and dc-sides under critical conditions of the power grid, and improving power quality against distortion from local nonlinear loads under a reduced switching frequency. A robust fast-dynamic predictive control method is developed for current controllers to fulfil the multifunction. Unconstrained deadbeat control inputs are derived in twofold targets: ensuring fast dynamic response and significantly reducing both the computation and switching frequency for finite predictive control. The control system is applied on a permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) WT-based nano-grid connected to a distorted utility-grid. An OPAL-RT-based real-time platform is used for comparative studies among the proportional integration (PI) control, finite predictive control (FS-MPC), and proposed control method. In this paper, we present a data-driven secondary controller for regulating to some desired values several state variables of interest in an inverter-based power system, namely, electrical frequency, voltage magnitudes at critical buses, and active power flows through critical lines. The secondary controller is based on online feedback optimization, leveraging the learned sensitivities of changes in the state variables to changes in inverter active and reactive power setpoints. To learn the sensitivities accurately from data, the feedback optimization has a built-in mechanism for keeping the secondary control inputs persistently exciting without degrading its performance or compromising system operational reliability. To ensure safe and reliable operation, we present an approach based on Gaussian process regression that, by making an inference about the modeling uncertainties not accounted for in the sensitivity-based prediction model, allows the controller to correct the predictions and find safe control actions, for which the prediction errors are more likely to be small. The feedback optimization also utilizes the learned power-voltage characteristics of photovoltaic (PV) arrays to compute DC-link voltage setpoints so as to allow the PV arrays to track the power setpoints. To learn the power-voltage characteristics, we separately execute a data-driven approach that fits a concave polynomial to the collected power-voltage measurements by solving a sum-of-squares (SoS) optimization. The uncertain nature of renewable energy resources (RERs) and fast demand response lead to recurring voltage violations in the power systems, which causes frequent transformer tap shifting and capacitor switching. Therefore, this paper resorts to the static var compensators (SVCs) to manage the bus voltages based on the multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MA-DRL) algorithm. The proposed scheme includes several system agents and SVC agents to collaboratively adjust the injected reactive power to restrict the bus voltages within the normal range. All the agents are trained centrally and executed separately, which requires minimum communication cost. The penetration of photovoltaics (PVs) has been increasing in active distribution networks (ADN), which leads to severe voltage violation problems. PV inverters can provide fast and flexible reactive power support and are now allowed to participate in the voltage regulation process. This paper proposes a real-time combined central and local Volt/Var control (VVC) strategy to mitigate voltage violation problems while minimizing the network power loss. Based on the historical PV and load data, the load flow and optimal power flow are performed in the centralized controller (CC) to obtain multiple voltage and optimal power settings for each PV system. The local controller (LC) then generates voltage control curves with these optimal scatters. To improve the voltage control effect, a novel 3-Dimension voltage control curve is proposed considering both the measurements of node voltage and PV generation. Moreover, a data-driven deep convolution neural network is designed and trained to generate optimal local voltage control curves without prior knowledge of specific curve functions. Existing power system resilience enhancement methods, such as proactive generation rescheduling, movable sources dispatch, and network topology reconfiguration, do not explore the capability and flexibility of shunts to maintain voltage stability during and after disrupting events. Besides, existing methods rely on accurate system models that are not easily scalable for large integrated power grids. In this paper, a data-driven multi-agent framework based on a deep-reinforcement-learning algorithm is proposed to overcome the computation and scalability concerns related to precise system models and to plan for the deployment of shunts for power system resilience enhancement. Specifically, voltage violations due to outages of multiple lines during windstorms are taken as an example of a power system resilience improvement problem. Then, a multi-agent based hybrid soft actor critic (HSAC) algorithm is developed for offline siting and sizing as well as online controlling of shunt reactive power compensators to enhance voltage resilience. The HSAC algorithm is derived from the fundamental SAC algorithms that contain both continuous and discrete action spaces. The proposed multi-agent framework learns from previous experiences and eventually gets trained to determine proper locations and sizes for shunts to avoid voltage violations during multiple line failures. The proposed approach is demonstrated on the IEEE 57-bus and IEEE 300-bus systems. This paper considers the co-operation of distributed generators (DGs), battery energy storage systems (BESSs) and voltage regulating devices for integrated peak shaving and voltage regulation in distribution grids through a co-optimization framework, which aims to minimize the operational costs while fulfilling the operational constraints of network and devices. To account for the uncertainties of load demand and generation, we then convert the co-optimization model into a two-stage stochastic program where state-of-charge (SoC) trajectories of BESSs and operation of voltage regulating devices are optimized at the first stage for day-ahead scheduling, while the reactive powers of DGs and BESSs are left at the second stage for potential intra-day scheduling to handle short-term voltage issues. This paper proposes a novel online measurement-based Wide-Area Voltage Control (WAVC) method using Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data in power systems with Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices. As opposed to previous WAVC methods, the proposed WAVC does not require any model knowledge or the participation of all buses and considers both active and reactive power perturbations. Specifically, the proposed WAVC method exploits the regression theorem of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process to estimate the sensitivity matrices through PMU data online, which are further used to design and apply the voltage regulation by updating the reference points of FACTS devices. Numerical results on the IEEE 39-Bus and IEEE 68-Bus systems demonstrate that the proposed model-free WAVC can provide effective voltage control in various network topologies, different combinations of voltage-controlled and voltage-uncontrolled buses, under measurement noise, and in case of missing PMUs. The focus of this paper is on analyzing the impact of conservation voltage reduction in the presence of active devices such as solar photovoltaic (PV) and developing controls that leverage these distributed energy resources. An event-driven predictive approach for real-time volt/volt-ampere reactive (VAR) optimization, along with a local two-level adaptive volt/VAR droop-based control algorithm for advanced distribution management systems, is introduced. The methodology covers aggregated and autonomous controls under different timescale operations, including the impact and effect of unpredicted events such as cloud transients on PV power production. Besides, the control schemes include the uncertainties in PV power generation and load power demand. The proposed methodology is validated in a real-time framework using the real-time digital simulator platform through co-simulation with models based on Python and OpenDSS (Open Distribution System Simulator). The developed methodology is tested on the modified IEEE 123-feeder test system. The results reveal that the proposed methodology works well in the presence of high penetrations of PV power, produces significant energy savings, and mitigates over-/undervoltage problems. Non-negligible amounts of Distributed Generating Units (DGUs) are already connected to power systems, predominantly to medium- and low-voltage networks. The interaction between distribution and transmission systems is gaining the attention of system operators. Given the high controlability of DGUs, the active distribution networks can potentially support the transmission system during emergency situations. Previously proposed voltage emergency controls involving distribution network assets focused on preserving the transmission system integrity, even if it implies affecting the distribution system operation (intrusive schemes). More attention needs to be devoted to supporting transmission voltages, while preserving the distribution network operation (non-intrusive schemes). This paper introduces a new adaptive and non-intrusive voltage emergency control scheme based on the synchronization of DGUs and the load tap changer of the corresponding distribution transformer. In this paper five different flexibility options are analysed from a techno-economic perspective as alternatives to traditional grid expansion for a specific distribution grid in Germany. The options are: two reactive power control strategies with photovoltaic inverters (as a function of the power feed-in, or of the voltage at the connection point), one residential and two large scale battery storage applications (primary control reserve with autonomous reactive power control or self consumption maximisation strategy with autonomous reactive power control). For the pilot grid located in Southern Germany a photovoltaic expansion pathway is determined. The main goal of this work is to quantify the grid expansion actions that can be avoided by applying these five flexibility options for the assumed expansion pathway, focusing on large scale battery storages. It is shown that the five flexibility options increase the hosting capacity for PV systems, compared to a scenario without, by up to 45%. Furthermore, the results of the economic assessment indicate that the analysed flexibility options might be a viable alternative to traditional grid expansion as all of them show a cost reduction potential for the pilot region. These results could encourage DSOs to consider the integration of additional PV and battery storage systems not as a problem which triggers grid expansion, but as part of the solution reducing future grid expansion costs. The impedance of the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is an effective method to analyze the dynamic interactions between the VSG and the grid. For the existence of power controllers and asymmetric inner-loop controllers in the d- and q-axis, there are couplings in the output sequence impedance of VSG. Although the couplings are relatively small, they still have a significant impact on the stability performance. However, there is no result published on this aspect up to now. To bridge this gap, a sequence impedance model based on harmonic linearization is established in this paper, which explicitly reveals the mirror frequency effect (MFE) in VSG. Subsequently, the relationships between the power controllers and the MFE are demonstrated. With increasing penetration of solar PV, some distribution feeders are experiencing highly variable net-load flows and even reverse flows. To optimize distribution systems under such conditions, the scheduling of mechanical devices, such as OLTCs and capacitor banks, needs to take into account forecasted solar PV and actual grid conditions. However, these legacy switching assets are operated on a daily or hourly timescale, due to the wear and tear associated with mechanical switching, which makes them unsuitable for real-time control. Therefore, there is a natural timescale-separation between these slower mechanical assets and the responsive nature of inverter-based resources. In this paper, we present a network admissible convex formulation for holistically scheduling controllable grid assets to position voltage optimally against solar PV. An optimal hourly schedule is presented that utilizes mechanical resources to position the predicted voltages close to nominal values, while minimizing the use of inverter-based resources (i.e., DERs), making them available for control at a faster time-scale (after the uncertainty reveals itself). A convex, inner approximation of the OPF problem is adapted to a mixed-integer linear program that minimizes voltage deviations from nominal (i.e., maximizes voltage margins). The resulting OPF solution respects all the network constraints and is, hence, robust against modeling simplifications.Simulation based analysis on IEEE distribution feeders validates the approach. For a hybrid ac/dc power system incorporating voltage source converter-based multi-terminal direct current (VSC-MTDC) grids, it is essential to solve the power flow problems efficiently for reliable operation. This paper presents an efficient ac/dc power flow algorithm considering the complementary constraints of VSC's reactive power limit and ac node voltage. It can be distinguished from the existing works in terms of both modeling and algorithm aspects. First, the VSC model is formulated, in which the interactions between the reactive power limit and the ac node voltage of VSC are viewed as complementary relations. The complementary relations are expressed using a smooth Fischer-Burmeister function. Then, power flow models of the ac grid and dc grid with a constant Jacobian matrix are formulated based on the VSC model, respectively. To efficiently solve the power flow of an ac/dc grid, the structure characteristic of the Jacobian matrix of ac/dc power flow computation is analyzed. It shows that the Jacobian matrix can be approximated as a block-upper triangular one. Based on this characteristic, a decoupled ac/dc power flow computation algorithm is provided. The distributed generators (DGs) and energy storages systems (ESSs) have different droop characteristics for power sharing in autonomous microgrids (MGs). In previous research, the distributed secondary control is proposed for only one specific type of units, and relies on periodic communications among neighbors. In this paper, a unified distributed real power sharing control scheme based on the dynamic event-triggered mechanism is proposed for droop-governed DGs and ESSs. A unified power sharing strategy is proposed where the power are fairly shared among all DGs and ESSs considering their different power ratings and capacities, while state-of-charges among ESSs are balanced. In the meantime, a distributed event-triggered control scheme with a novel dynamic triggering mechanism is designed to reduce the communications among controllers. Besides, the proposed event-triggered mechanism is sample-based and only uses the largest and the second smallest eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix to design the controller gain and event-triggered parameters. To validate the proposed control design, a MG test system with detailed component models is built in the OPAL-RT real-time simulator. Maintaining balanced voltages across distribution networks is becoming more challenging with increasing deployment of single-phase distributed generation and larger single-phase loads. The paper develops a reactive power compensation strategy that uses distributed solar photovoltaic (PV) inverters to mitigate such voltage unbalance. The proposed strategy takes advantage of Steinmetz design and is implemented via both decentralized and distributed control. The latter coordinates PV inverters through a communication network. We demonstrate the performance of the controllers on the IEEE 13-node feeder and a much larger taxonomy feeder (617 nodes and 1196 triplex nodes), and consider different connections of loads and PV systems. Simulation results demonstrate the trade-offs between the controllers. The penetration of photovoltaics (PVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing in active distribution networks (ADN), which may lead to severe voltage violation problems. This paper proposes a two-stage real-time Volt/Var control method to mitigate fast voltage violations. In the first stage, hourly on-load tap changer (OLTC) and capacitor banks (CBs) are scheduled based on the optimal power flow method. The optimization problem is formulated as a mixed-integer second-order cone programming (MISOCP) which can be effectively solved. In the second stage, a data-driven network partition method is proposed to select critical bus and assess the voltage violation risk of each control area, followed by the intra-day dispatch of EVs. Based on the partition results, reactive power of PVs and EVs is controlled in real-time to mitigate voltage violations. Considering the suddenly active power drop of PVs, a rule-based control strategy coordinating PVs and CBs is proposed to improve the reactive power reserve in ADN. Due to the visibility and controllability features of the latest distribution networks, there are potentials to model customer loads through a component-based approach more accurately. The electricity markets started in recent years enable trading and exchanges of electricity among traditional power stations and prosumers. It provides a possibility to improve the optimality of classical volt-var optimization (VVO) schemes. In this paper, a tri-level bottom-up load model and a market-based volt-var optimization (mVVO) model are proposed. The energy-to-voltage (ETV) parameter is proposed in our load model as a substitute for the widely used load-to-voltage (LTV) parameter to reflect long-term load characteristics. The mVVO model using ETV parameters aims to combine the optimal voltage regulation strategies and electricity purchase strategies from wholesale and retail markets for maximum cost saving. The case studies based on real load data of Hong Kong show that by coordinating the voltage regulation methods with market behaviors, utilities can reach a higher level of cost saving, in addition to energy saving. Volt-VAR optimization (VVO) has been investigated extensively in power systems. However, under the era of integrated energy systems (IES), the growing interdependencies between different energy systems complicate traditional VVO. This is further hardened by incurred gas quality problems due to the hydrogen injection in IES, produced by widely applied power-to-gas (P2G) facilitates that couple between power and gas systems. This paper develops a two-stage volt-VAR-pressure optimization (VVPO) model for PV-penetrated IES to manage the variation of system voltages while managing gas quality indices. In addition to the traditional voltage regulating devices, P2G facilities, which can mitigate fluctuating PV output via converting the surplus generation into hydrogen, are also used for voltage management. A two-stage distributionally robust optimization (DRO) based on moment information is utilized to model PV uncertainty. A semidefinite programming model is formulated and finally solved by the constraint generation algorithm. A 33-bus-20-node IES is used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed VVPO on voltage management, ensured gas quality with high economic efficiency. This paper tackles key industry needs in the scope of the AC Security-Constrained Optimal Power Flow (SCOPF) framework, specifically two major challenging requirements regarding generators’ post-contingency behavior: the (droop-based) frequency response and the voltage control mechanism (including PV/PQ switching). To this end, and to obtain a sufficiently accurate solution with a reasonable computational burden, we propose an approximation approach to SCOPF which extends significantly an existing algorithm with novel modelling elements: a continuous formulation to model generators’ post-contingency responses based on successive approximations, a technique to evaluate the viability of contingencies with respect to the base case set-points, and the complexity reduction of all post-contingency states through network compression and power flow piecewise linearization. All new features are validated both separately and in unison, to monitor the improvement of the solution time and the potential degradation of the solution's quality. The proposed approach is successfully applied to three power system network models, the largest of which consists of 2,000 buses and more than 3,000 contingencies. Using VSC-MTDC to provide frequency support for interconnected power systems is an attractive solution. Considering the disadvantages of traditional methods in power shortage or surplus absorption into the VSC-MTDC from AC systems requiring active power support (RAPS system) as well as flexible and effective power balance in AC systems providing active power support (PAPS system), this paper proposes a novel frequency support control method for interconnected power systems using VSC-MTDC. The main principle of the proposed frequency support control method is firstly to make the active power shortage or surplus of the RAPS system be fully and naturally absorbed into the DC grid with the AC slack bus mode control proposed for RAPS converters; in addition, the smooth switching control and the power limiting control are further proposed to realize smooth and safe power shortage or surplus absorption. Secondly, according to the proposed flexible PAPS systems matching strategy, one or more appropriate PAPS systems with adequate capacity are selected to effectively and accurately balance the unbalanced power via the corresponding PAPS converters using the active balancing power control. In this paper, a model-based predictive control method is proposed for utilization of flexible resources such as battery energy storage systems and heating systems effectively to provide demand response in low-voltage distribution networks with solar photovoltaic. The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, a linear power flow method based on relaxation of branch power losses applicable to radial distribution networks is proposed and formulated. Second, a flexible resources controller that solves a multi-objective linear optimization problem in receding-horizon fashion is formulated taking into account system states, forecasts of generation, and loads. Using the proposed control algorithm, flexibility from network resources can be utilized for low-voltage network management with assurance of quality of service to the customers. Simulations are conducted for summer and winter cases on a simplified Danish low-voltage network using Matlab/Simulink to study the performance of the proposed control method. Compared to the methods in state of the art, the proposed linear power flow method is proven to be accurate for the calculation of network power flows. Simulation results also show that proposed flexible resources controller can meet the network control objectives while satisfying the network constraints and operation limits of the flexible resources. This paper presents a scalable method for improving the solutions of ac optimal power flow (AC OPF) with respect to deviations in predicted power injections from wind and other uncertain generation resources. The aim of this paper is on providing solutions that are more robust to short-term deviations, and that optimize both the initial operating point and a parametrized response policy for control during fluctuations. We formulate this as a chance-constrained optimization problem. To obtain a tractable representation of the chance constraints, we introduce a number of modeling assumptions and leverage recent theoretical results to reformulate the problem as a convex, second-order cone program, which is efficiently solvable even for large instances. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed procedure improves the feasibility and cost performance of the OPF solution, while the additional computation time is on the same magnitude as a single deterministic AC OPF calculation.
